Environment & Green Building Yad Hanadiv’s Environment Programme is committed to improving the health and resilience of Israel’s natural and urban ecosystems. The Foundation has established the Environment and Health Fund, supported biodiversity initiatives, sustainable use of agricultural land, and is pursuing a strategy to curb degradation of Israel’s Mediterranean Exclusive Economic Zone. It has also sought to raise awareness and provide leadership in the area of sustainable Green Building. This has included mounting the 2009 Jerusalem Seminar in Architecture on Green Design, the construction of the Visitors Pavilion at Ramat Hanadiv Memorial Gardens and Nature Park (2008) and the Foundation offices at 4 George Washington Street in Jerusalem (2012). The new National Library Building designed by the Swiss firm of Herzog & de Meuron and funded by Yad Hanadiv, will conform to international standards of Green Building.

RAMAT HANADIV
The First LEED Certified Building in Israel The Visitors Pavilion at Ramat Hanadiv was the first building in Israel to receive Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the US Green Building Council. The burial site and a living memorial to Baron Edmond de Rothschild and Baroness Adelheid, Ramat Hanadiv strives to manage the 470 hectares (1161 acres) of its meticulously cultivated Memorial Gardens and open landscape Nature Park based on sustainable interactions between man, nature and the environment. The Visitors Pavilion, designed by Ada Karmi-Melamede, is largely hidden under a landscaped berm which is planted with both wild and cultivated vegetation.

The offices comprise the third, fourth and fifth floors of a building located in the heart of the Jerusalem. It is part of an ensemble of buildings adjacent to the historic YMCA tower designed in 1933 by Arthur Loomis Harmon – the architect of New York's Empire State Building. The office roof offers a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. The offices received Silver LEED Certification of the US Green Building Council.
WHAT IS GREEN BUILDING? Green Building, sometimes called Sustainable Building, is a method of environmentally responsible and resource efficient construction that takes into consideration the entire life cycle of the building from siting, to design, construction, operation, maintenance and demolition. The aim is to minimize the use of resources, waste and damage to the environment, and to protect the health and enhance productivity of occupants. Ideally, the extra cost involved can be offset over the long run by savings in energy and water consumption.
