editor’s letter
‘Tis the season to reflect upon the past and start thinking about the future. While New Year’s resolutions often go unfulfilled throughout the year, their existence gives us hope that change and self-improvement are possible. It’s what you learn from the past and how you handle present circumstances that determines who you will be and where you will go in the future. Just as Ebenezer Scrooge says in A Christmas Carol, “Men’s courses will foreshadow certain ends, to which, if persevered in, they must lead. But if the courses be departed from, the ends will change.” The choices you make determine your own happiness or misery, but it is never too late to turn things around. While it is easier said than done, we have the power within us to influence our own futures and the futures of those around us. With high hopes and many goals for the New Year, we are establishing our own path for the future of DList Magazine. We have reflected on the past year of the things we’ve accomplished and what we hope to achieve in the future as we continue our quest to make an impact on Seattle. We can only do that by anticipating what will change in Seattle. What will be the internal and external forces that will influence change? The answers may be in the next big artist, fashion trends, dining innovations, technology or changing culture – which is what this issue is all about.
This issue not only features future cultural trends and predictions, but also represents DList Magazine’s future. We are experts in the nightlife scene and strongly support it, but it is not our only focus. Our lifestyle publication revolves around dining, drinking, fashion, art, music, sports and more. With this issue we are providing rich, informative content to readers and will continue to do so in future issues. You will also see that our upcoming events for 2014 will focus on unique, one-of-a-kind events. It’s our goal to help shape our future by influencing your personal lifestyle in the present. After all, “a lifestyle is a terrible thing to waste.” CHARITY MAINVILLE executive director @charityanna

ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN
Sci-fi movies and television shows have often featured the possibilities of what inventions and innovations could come in the future. Teleportation, living underwater, co-mingling with aliens or relocating to Mars have been consistent topics within science fiction enthusiasts during the last few decades. Needless to say, some of these futuristic developments are more realistic than others – and we are here to let you know about which ones may be coming out sooner rather than later.
THE HOVERBOARD – KEEP DREAMING Since the moment in Back to Future II where Marty McFly jumped on to a hot pink hoverboard to escape bullies, inventors have been trying to replicate it. The demand for its release in 2015 has been an ongoing topic for obsessed fans. Sadly, the reality of this actually happening is slim to none. Haltek Industries launched an Indiegogo campaign in July 2013 in hopes of raising $1,000,000 to produce the flying skateboard controlled by a mobile app. They claimed the technology is available but too expensive to obtain without funding. Unfortunately their fundraising efforts have been unsuccessful. Even though their website states “we are working on something awesome”, with a picture of the hoverboard and a countdown to 2015, the campaign has only raised $3,100 thus far. If you really can’t wait, Mattel has created their own replica of Marty’s hoverboard that hovers and makes the “whooshing” sounds from the movie. Only downfall is, unless you weigh 6 ounces, it won’t hover with you on it. Bummer.

FLYING CARS - REALITY The Jetsons introduced the idea of flying cars back in 1962, followed by movies such as Back to the Future and The Fifth Element. Could flying cars soon be taking over the road/airways? This idea may not be that far off. Terrafugia is hoping to turn this dream into a reality in the next eight to twelve years. The company’s revolution for personal mobility involves the TF-X™, a four-seat, plug-in hybrid electric flying car with fly-by-wire vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities. Their goal is to have the vehicle statistically safer than driving a standard automobile, which includes a backup full-vehicle parachute system for an emergency. The TF-X™ will be able to fly in either “manual” or “automatic” modes between approved landing zones or airports, able to drive on roads and highways and have a non-stop flight range of at least 500 miles. It will be able to recharge its batteries either from its engine or by plugging into electric car charging stations. Terrafugia claims it should take the average driver no longer than five hours to learn how to operate it. The final price point is not yet set, but Terrafugia’s Transition (a street legal airplane that has been approved for production) is estimated to be $279,000. TIME TRAVEL – MAAYYYYBEEEE… Okay, what sci-fi movie or TV show hasn’t suggested time travel? The possibility of traveling to the future or past was first questioned when Albert Einstein coined his theory of relativity in the early 1900’s. Since then, scientists have continued to pursue the likelihood of time travel. This past October, particle physicist Brian Cox, answered the question of time travel with a confident “yes” – but only to the future. Accelerating to the speed of light will only bring us to the future. Traveling to the past requires a “wormhole” in space, which has yet been discovered. Colin Stuart, author of The Big Questions in Science, begs to differ. He stated traveling to the future is “easy” but traveling to the past is not impossible, just very difficult. So it’s possible, but the question remains: when? The only time machine proven to work is the one that comes with your laptop to back up your device. However, one Iranian scientist claimed to have built the first ever real time machine back in April 2013, but Iran publicly denied its existence. There have been multiple conspiracy theories that there were hidden time machines, including one at The Montauk Air Force Station, even though the station was shut down in 1981. We are ironically left with the annoying paradox that we won’t know until the future if we will be able to travel into the future.

Die-cast in solid metal and electroplated in gun metal and 24K gold, the bottle stopper is an exceptional two-toned sword featuring elaborate metal carvings inspired by those depicted on the hand guards of 18th century Japanese Samurai swords; a reflection of Yurman’s love for unique and rare objects, artwork and artifacts. Like Patrón Añejo, Yurman’s bottle stopper is bold, intricate and truly distinct. ($54.95) sold in gift sets and retailers

These gloves from Mujjo are made out of a well-considered combination of Ethiopian lambskin leather and crocheted Egyptian cotton. The crochet pattern on the top creates a deliberate and powerful contrast with leather on the palm of the gloves while sleek lines and uniform dark tones amplify harmony. A NOSE TO THE FUTURE “Here in Seattle, some of the stuff we’re doing here is smoking emmer, which is a [type of] grain. We’re malting it, sprouting it, and then smoking it, and no one is doing that. It’s really a forefront of what’s coming next for food. It’s just basically finding another way to play with texture and flavor, and definitely there’s so much to say about your nose. You can only taste so much and everything is really sensory through your nose, so that’s where that smoke really comes in.” - General Manager, Angela Kimber

THE STEPS OF A CHEF PHOTOS WRITTEN
By
Ernie Sapiro Emily Kang
We hate to break it to you, but whipping up a bowl of Top Ramen will never impress your date or get you onto the next season of Top Chef. But not to worry, DList Magazine is here to show you your bright future as a foodie, full of perfect scrambled eggs and romantic home-made dinners. It all goes down in Delve Kitchen, located underneath Pike Place Market. There, a team of culinary gurus hold workshops and are filming and writing “how-to” videos to transform you into a better cook. The videos are compiled on an online site called “ChefSteps” (www.chefsteps.com) where they mix recipes, science, and art seamlessly; they share their love and knowledge for cooking with experienced and novice chefs alike. As founder Chris Young says, “The internet is the most interesting technology for changing the future.” And with their technology and know-how, your inner chef will surface with the click of a mouse.
Q&A with Chris Young Q: What’s a typical day at ChefSteps like? A: Typical days aren’t all that typical, but in general there’s sort of a daily routine of publishing content, and there’s a lot of people that have to work on that. You have the dish being developed and when it reaches the point where we’re happy with the idea, it usually gets filmed. That film has to get turned into a story, so there’s the editing. [And then] at that point, music composition happens. We do all our own original music composition and Hans does that in the studio. Karen, who’s our
20
managing editor is usually sort of writing the introduction and working with the kitchen to fine tune the recipe. In any given day, we [have] several pieces of content and stages of production so that there’s always something ready to go.” Q: What is the goal of ChefSteps? A: “A big part of ChefSteps’ goal is to create the technology, create the tools that allow chefs whether professional chefs or merely enthusiastic cooks can share their ideas with other like-minded curious cooks around the world.”

SCIENCE The future of cooking means more advanced cooking technology and a more scientific method. In the Delve Kitchen, science is a big part of the magic in the kitchen. Whether you’re a professional or just the cooking enthusiast, ChefSteps is here to share recipes and techniques to teach you how to cook an exquisite meal; that might even involve liquid nitrogen and centrifuges.
LIQUID NITROGEN “So for us liquid nitrogen is really a fun tool but I think it’s actually more practical than a lot of people think. One, it’s cheap, it’s available and it’s pretty damn safe. It’s safer than fryer oil or cooking sugar or anything like that. Liquid nitrogen will freeze items faster than anything else. So if you do that, you can manipulate a lot of textures and can actually manipulate food in ways you physically can’t do without liquid nitrogen.” – Grant Lee Crilly
www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com
CENTRIFUGES “I think centrifuges will become more common. It’s not only a way to get things done more efficiently, but [it’s also] a tool of creativity, allowing you to take ingredients apart in a totally different way than we can do with traditional techniques.” – Chris Young

Cointreauversial Teese
DRINK
Dita Von Teese understands fashion, beauty, art, sex appeal and a damn good cocktail. She stepped out on the burlesque scene in 1992 and has since become a pop culture icon—dancing, modeling, designing, acting and branding. After acting as Cointreau’s brand ambassador for over six years, she is now their official online spokesperson. Being the ultimate entertainer herself, Dita Von Teese is sharing all of her experience and knowledge on what makes the perfect Cointreau cocktail for the holiday season.
SIMPLICITY IS KEY Dita’s golden rule of entertaining is to keep it simple. When hosting guests simplicity is the way to go; you want to avoid being frazzled around your friends and loved ones. They want to enjoy the night with you; not see you stressed out over presenting the perfect cocktails and appetizers.
COINTREAU APPLE CRISP
CREATE YOUR OWN SIGNATURE COCKTAIL Add a personal touch to your party by coming up with your own tasty cocktail, incorporating your own name in the title for fun! Dita’s favorite cocktail is a margarita so she created the “MargaDita”. A classic margarita; tequila, Cointreau and fresh lime juice mixed with rose essence and patchouli pepper.
2 oz. Cointreau 1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice 3 oz. Fresh Apple Cider Pinch of nutmeg Build all ingredients over ice in a highball glass. Stir well and garnish with apple slices.
GET YOUR GUESTS INVOLVED Let your guests’ bartend by setting up a Cointreau Rickey Bar. Grab the basic ingredients, Cointreau, lime and soda and make a beautiful display of additional ingredients such as cucumber, apple, fig, sage, thyme and basil. BATCH IT There is no need to be stuck at the bar making drinks the entire night. Whip up enough for your guests beforehand and present them in beautiful carafes or vintage punch bowls with fresh orange slices.

TRIUMPHANT
“Nel vino la verità.” For those who lack the Italian tongue – “In wine, the truth” and when you mix that with liquor, you will be ready for a confessional. After trying four delicious cocktails from Triumph Bar, I confess, I was left impressed. Triumph Bar opened on August 29th, setting the standard for the future of lower Queen Anne’s restaurant and bar boom; being the first of five restaurants and bars opening over the next couple of years. The 1,800 sq. foot (including the kitchen) spot that sits 79 guests is nestled under the Expo Apartments right next to the Key Arena. The red, black and white sign that hangs above the door incorporates
three icons below the name showing what’s on the menu; Italian cuisine combined with deep south inspiration made with northwest ingredients, wine and cocktails all done to perfection. Owners Jim and Brandon Marsh are both graduates of the International Sommelier Guild in Seattle. A sommelier is someone who is trained, knowledgeable and specializes in all aspects of wine and service. It’s not just some easy class; it’s a degree that takes a year and a half to obtain. The course consists of an exam (similar to the SAT’s), an essay, classifying wine by blind tasting, food pairing and service. With these skills it makes sense that wine is worked PHOTOS WRITTEN

into half of the cocktails on their menu. The brothers opened up the spot when Jim moved back to the Northwest after living in New York for seven years. He brought his executive chef, Jonathan Doar, and sous chef, Danny Hill, with him. Jonathan produced the menu from his experience at Fishtail by David, David Burke Kitchen in New York City and traveling all over Italy for one year. All the dishes are made with fresh ingredients, as the only thing frozen in their restaurant is the gelato, which can be ordered with the bread pudding made with sea salt caramel...amazing. Surprisingly not too spicy, but definitely has a kick, followed by a sweet and sour finish. When I asked Jim, why Siraracha, he said it’s been in every kitchen he’s worked at and his own. “I was just thinking what’s laying around the kitchen that I could work into the drinks.” (B) Gold Rush is perfect for the winter season with 2oz W.l. Weller bourbon, 1 oz honey, and 1 oz lemon juice are shaken together to pour out a cascade of gold color goodness. The bourbon taste is light and blends well with cinnamon and sweet lemonade. (C) The Rye Witch The Rye Witch combines 2oz Sazerac Rye, ½ oz Stregga, 1/3oz simple syrup, dash of Regan’s Orange Bitters, shaken, poured over ice and finished with a spritz of carbonated sherry. The rye is tasted in the first sip but finishes nicely with a caramel aftertaste.

A GREAT STORY PHOTOS WRITTEN
With more coffee shops per capita than any other city, Seattle is the coffee capital of America, with endless options. Storyville values quality over quantity, setting them apart from the competition. Everything from the menu, the décor, to the flavor of the coffee is uncomplicated and beyond satisfying. The location is not easy to find, but definitely worth the quest. Storyville’s red “flyboy” logo appears mysteriously throughout Pike Place Market and you can follow the “boy” upstairs to the top floor -- where you will discover this hidden gem. The Co-President, Jamie Munson told me, “We want to be a platform for other people to live out

their story.” He believes that a singular great product is better than trying to make a variety of blends in order to satisfy niche markets, and that coffee lovers will appreciate the time and attention invested into sourcing great beans. While it is “locked in the Storyville vault” where their beans come from, they use three different types of beans in their blends and roast them locally on Bainbridge Island. The coffee is roasted and sold on the same day in order to maintain its freshness. The delicious menu items are fresh as well; nothing frozen or reheated. With its pastries having a short shelf life, all of the left over items are donated to different

Most roasts are too bitter for me so I need a little sweetening; Storyville’s flavor is smooth and sweet. I was astounded that for the first time I drank my coffee black and enjoyed it far more than my usual Americano. The taste of Storyville’s coffee is unparalleled and is certainly worth the $20 a pound that they charge for it. 94 Pike St, Seattle, WA 98101 (206) 780-5777

TREAT YOURSELF Sea Salt Caramel Heart - Sweet meets salty when caramel, buttery layers of puff pastry and sea salt come together to create perfection. If you crave something more filling, try the Sea Salt Caramel Roll. Black Forest Ham & Cheddar Pastry - A breakfast indulgence of black forest ham and Beecher’s Flagship Cheddar baked in a flaky and buttery puff pastry. This pastry is by far my favorite Storyville menu item, putting the average ham and cheese croissant to shame. Goat Cheese & Peppered Strawberry Puff - A petit, flaky pastry exterior with creamy goat cheese and lightly peppered strawberry interior. This treat marries sweet and savory flavors perfectly, leaving my taste buds wanting more. Waffle Damn Good - An airy toasted waffle, crispy on the outside with a soft interior. Served with fruit, powdered sugar, butter and maple syrup. This breakfast delight is available all day.
The “Flyboy” logo is a little boy who is holding a D.C.3 airplane overhead. This was the first plane used in commercial passenger airline travel. It symbolizes how people dreamt of seeing distant parts of the world but thought it to be impossible and this is why Storyville incorporates it into their logo. Storyville wants to be the place where the impossible becomes possible.

EN POINTE The first ballet I ever attended was the Nutcracker at the Twin Cities Ballet in 1988. I was in awe of the performance; this second grade field trip was probably the only instance in my childhood where I was silent for two hours straight. Afterwards, I was determined to become a ballerina. I covered my bedroom in ballet slipper wallpaper, collected ballerina dolls and figurines, and taught myself to dance using VHS tapes. However, my dream of becoming a ballerina dissipated. As I got older I began to think that most ballerinas weren’t above 18-years-old. I discovered at the Pacific Northwest Ballet that professional ballet dancers are at least 18 years old and can dance until to their mid-40’s in some cases – this tidbit of information re-sparked my deferred childhood dream of ballerina stardom. Once Mr. Tucker, the Media Relations Manager at PNB, told me that dancers train five days a week, nine hours a day - I gave up once again. Touring
one of the largest and most highly regarded ballet companies in the United States would be enough to satisfy me. PNB was originally founded to support the Seattle Opera Association when its performances required dancers. A few years later it became an independent organization in 1978. The company has grown tremendously since then; it now has 46 professional dancers (originally 18), on top of having around 1,000 students that attend the PNB School. Despite what popular dance movies portray, auditions are not held to join the company. Once a student reaches professional division, they are sometimes placed in the Corpes de Ballet (chorus of productions) or tour with PNB over the summer. If the Artistic Director observes an outstanding dancer, he will invite them to join the company; one to two dancers may be chosen each year. PNB dancers must be very flexible, literally and

figuratively, as they are subject to impromptu changes at a moment’s notice. Schedules are dependent upon whether dancers need rest and recuperation or get sick or are injured, resulting in multiple casts per production. The highest rank a ballet dancer achieves is that of principal dancer. Some of the roles principals take on, such as the dual characters of Odette and Odile in Swan Lake, are so demanding that multiple casts are required during a run, due to the intensity of the performance. The dancers are not the only members of the PNB who work hard. Each new production PNB takes on, like Giselle in spring 2014, involves hours of dedication from costume designers, seamstresses, wardrobe assistants and stage designers. Pauline, a seamstress with PNB, explained that dancers can adjust to dancing in each design whether it’s a heavy German gown or a simple corset and tights. The pieces

GET STARTED PNB offers open classes for children and adults that want to experience PNB’s training; levels ranging from beginner to advanced. LEVELS There are three levels of dancers within a company. Corps de Ballet – the biggest group usually dancing in the courses and supported by the professional division dancers and apprentices. Soloists– perform the supporting characters in a performance with smaller solo acts. Principals – lead position; playing the main characters in performances. In some cases dancers from each level will need to play a bigger performance role, but dancers seldom play down a position.
take weeks to make, a standard tutu alone takes 100 hours (seriously) to produce. In some cases, costumes are rented or bought depending on budget and availability. Perhaps the most important element of the productions, though, are the pointe shoes made of cardboard, fabric and paste. The PNB goes through approximately 2,000 pointe shoes each year; all of which are created by Freed of London, regarded as one of the best in the world. Each shoe is custom made for each dancer and each dancer has their own assigned Pointe Shoe Maker. As an avid shoe lover, I immediately had enchanting visions of my closet filled with 2,000 different pairs of shoes made by my own custom shoemaker. But in all seriousness, Pointe Shoe Makers have a very time sensitive job that is central to the success of PNB. It can take almost three years for a maker to get assigned to an individual
dancer. Each maker produces 30-40 shoes per day, using only a pair of long nosed pliers, a smooth hammer and a broom handle. Each shoe has a specific style and signature from the maker such as an anchor, crown or key that is stamped on the bottom of the shoe. Corps dancer, Jessika Anspach, explained that dancers never get to meet to their shoemaker, yet the relationship is extremely important to avoid having fit issues and slipper returns. Pointe shoes are used extremely and dependent on the dancer, some pairs only lasting through one show. The shoes are not cheap either, ranging from $100 - $200, which is why PNB has The Toe Shoe Fund, where donors support the cost and receive a plaque on the dancer’s locker they helped. Without donations, the PNB would cease to exist. Tickets purchased for each show do not come close to covering the cost of each production. PNB has multiple programs for those
who want to support, including subscriptions for up to six shows with discounted ticket prices among other benefits. “If we were to fully reproduce the Nutcracker from the ground up today, it would cost over $10 million alone,” Mr. Tucker explained. PNB has multiple programs for those who want to support, including subscriptions for up to six shows with discounted ticket prices and other benefits. Ticket prices range from around $26 - $130, depending on the show and seating choice. To watch a performance by at the PNB is to take part in the cultural, historic and artistic aspects of Seattle life. I guarantee you will be left speechless after the experience and feel great knowing you were able to support an important organization in your city. For information visit www.pnb.org

MUSIC WE LOVE
HUNTER HUNTED
There are rare moments when you hear a band on the rise and know they are going to be a huge hit. As their music flows, you can’t help but to dance or tap your feet; all the while your mood is becoming happier with every beat. Hunter Hunted is just that band we are confident to say will be making a big impact on the music scene in the very near future. The duo, Dan Chang and Michael Garner, are coming up to their one-year anniversary and it’s been a pretty good year to say the least. Recognized as MTV’s “Artists To Watch,” Nylon’s “Bands to look out for,” and Billboard Magazines “Scouting Report” (just to name a few), their track “Keep Together” has been heard on TV shows like The Vampire Diaries, The Real World, Pretty Little Liars, and Trophy Wife. After they release their first LP in Spring 2014 and their songs spread across the airwaves, we will be here to tell you, “We told you so.” interview by Charity Mainville photos by Frederik Etoall

DLIST: You two met as undergraduates at UCLA’s Awaken A Cappella and competed together as a duo winning “Best Duet” and “Best Overall Entry.” How did the friendship come about and the decision to create a band?
DLIST: You have been touring with some great bands including Fitz and The Tantrums, Weezer and Fun. Has touring with the bands influenced your career and which has been your favorite to tour with at this point?
MICHAEL GARNER: Beyond sharing a passion for singing in the a cappella group, we quickly realized that we both had an incredible ability to eat vast amounts of food... real models of American over-consumption. We would get together, write music and eat a bunch of food. It wasn’t long before we started incorporating instruments (Dan playing guitar and me on keys) into our songwriting. Since I was a RA (resident assistant) in the dorms, Dan and I could play music as loud and as late we wanted. Every noise complaint was directed to me so I couldn’t get trouble. Quite the political loophole, if you ask me. When the UCLA talent show (Spring Sing) came about we decided enter just for fun. We had such a good time performing that we decided to keep writing more songs, performing some open-mics around town and eventually it just made sense to call ourselves a “band.” Since then we’ve created a few different projects together, cut back a little on the food, but always stayed true to the dual lead vocals as the forefront of our music.
MICHAEL: So far we’ve been lucky to play with bands that are major influences to us. They’re upbeat, unpretentious and energetic, along with their fans. Obviously playing in front of thousands of new faces is going to be a huge part of moving our career forward, but the crowds are really welcoming and just want to have a good time. That energy feeds into us allowing us to have more fun on stage and play better. If we were touring with bands that play moodier music (which I actually love as well), we’d tailor our set to be a bit darker. Playing with bands like Fitz and the Tantrums, Weezer and Fun has definitely been a blessing. We feel like we’re in our element being further influenced by their music and performances every night when we watch their shows.
DLIST: How did the name Hunter Hunted come about?
MICHAEL: Like all things Hunter Hunted, it was a very collaborative process. A band name is important. It sets the tone. We didn’t want to eff this up. The entire process took almost a month. We had back-to-back sleepovers staying up all night deliberating. In the end, we came up with three options, which we surveyed (on survey monkey) to our close friends to solicit initial feelings and overall reaction. It was not good. Turned out all three options sucked. No one liked any of our ideas. Imagine how dejected we felt after spending all night conjuring up these names. The problem was there wasn’t any emotional connection to the names. We were trying too hard. We were in an interesting point in our lives feeling a wide range of emotions. There were a lot of positive things happening that made us feel on top of the world. Meanwhile, there were also things happening that really brought us down. We asked ourselves, how is it possible to feel like you can conquer the world one second only to be brought down and trampled upon the next? It’s like a hunter being hunted. Hunter Hunted.
“IT FEELS LIKE FANS IN SEATTLE HAVE SEEN A FEW MORE SHOWS AND ARE A BIT MORE SEASONED THAN IN OTHER CITIES.” DLIST: You appeared on Conan back in February 2013, what was it like to perform on a nationally broadcast show verses performing in front a crowd only?
MICHAEL: It just so happened that the guy who books Conan O’Brien came to our very first Hunter Hunted show back in February 2013 at the Troubadour. After the show he said he really liked us and wanted us to play on Conan. Dan and I have played in other bands together for years. We’re not jaded, per se, but we’re not easily excited by big promises either. Much to our surprise, however, the very next week we got a call from the guy to play Conan so our second show as Hunter Hunted was broadcast on national television. It was a pretty crazy experience. When we play live, I can at least connect with the first few rows of people in the audience. I was freaked out of my mind just knowing there was going to be a million people watching this one song, and I couldn’t see them. It ended up being a ton of fun, and I’m definitely excited www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com
to do it again (since we’ve had a bit more practice under our belt). DLIST: You’ve toured in various cities, how is performing in Seattle different from other cities as to response from your fans?
MICHAEL: Seattle is an incredible music city. There’s a really great energy just being in a venue. It feels like fans in Seattle have seen a few more shows and are a bit more seasoned than in other cities. The reaction isn’t typically the craziest (unlike smaller towns that don’t get as much music) but I feel like there is a genuine appreciation from people who come to our shows to really listen to our music. In a funny way a compliment in Seattle means more to me than other cities. Seattle keeps me honest. DLIST: Where do you see music going in the future?
MICHAEL: It seems like the future of music is being created through genetic hybrids of existing genres such as Avicii’s song, “Wake Me Up.” It’s an EDM produced track with country guitar flicks and soulful vocals. Pop songs now incorporate dubstep, where remixes are sometimes more stripped down than originals. There aren’t any rules for what can become a hit anymore. We’re standing on the shoulders of giants with the ability to study and write songs like a science, but I don’t see it necessarily as a lack of creativity. If done right, it still requires ingenuity to create evolution and new species of music. This being said, I believe classic songs will always have a place at the top. You can strip away everything to the vocal/lyrics and basic instrumentation, and you will still have an incredible song. That’s why the Beatles, Elvis, Bob Dylan, David Bowie and Joni Mitchell will always feel relevant (in my opinion). A good song is a good song whether it has a ton of production or not. DLIST: At this point you have released a five song EP, what can we expect for the future of Hunter Hunted?
MICHAEL: We are currently locked in our studio writing, only taking breaks to empty our pee bottles and let in some oxygen. The plan is to start recording our debut LP in January, release it in the spring of 2014 and spend all of that year on the road.

GIRL TALK
Kate Nash’s career launched quickly after being discovered on MySpace (back when MySpace mattered). Within a year she was named “Best Female Artist” in 2008 at the BRIT Awards. Since then she’s released two chart topping albums that led to sold out North American tours. Her latest album, Girl Talk, debuted in March this past year leading her into her third global tour this upcoming year. Music isn’t the only talent she possesses. Kate has acted in three different films (Powder Room – 2013, Syrup – 2013, Greetings from Tim Buckley - 2012) and Broadway along with modeling for multiple magazines and fashion lines. The future looks bright for Kate as she continues to expand her career not only in music, films and fashion, but in publications as well. She hopes to launch her own magazine sometime in 2014 that will be geared towards women featuring fashion and music. Sounds like our kind of gal! PHOTO WRITTEN

You were discovered through MySpace many years back. Some of the world’s biggest selling artists, like Justin Bieber, were also discovered online. Do you think social media is now the primary way labels look to find artists? Could this be a bad thing since it is hard to get a feel for stage presence and charisma from a short video clip? KATE: I think the Internet is both good and evil. It’s definitely the most useful thing today for artists. I’ve learned to appreciate it even more over the last year; being an independent artist and relying heavily on the Internet. My social and direct communication with fans is online. If you’re smart and talented, I think there are loads of ways to be charming online. Your personal fashion style is very eclectic, ranging from “princess” to “vamp”. What do you attribute your style to and how would you categorize your look? KATE: It really depends on my mood; I love having fun on stage. I like wearing fun, outrageous stuff but comfort is the most important thing to me. I think my look is kind of vampy/punk/pop/indie. I like to look at film characters to help create a look sometimes that can really help. Clothes are supposed to be fun and are an extension of your look. On stage, clothes are just another part of the visual show. Sarah Edmonds from The Upcoming claims “Nash is the anti-Miley.” Is there any merit to that quote? How do you compare yourself to other female pop-acts? KATE: I tend not to compare myself to other pop stars; I think other people make comparisons to sort of make sense of what’s out there. I appreciate what a lot other women are doing. And if I don’t appreciate what people are doing, I don’t think it would be right for me to bad mouth them. That’s not my style. I’ve been brought up not to bitch about people. I am extremely opinionated, but I’m also aware that just because I think something doesn’t make it right or wrong. So I focus on the positive. If I like something I talk about it a lot. There’s so much talent out there it’s better to focus on and promote the positive. Like the band on tour with us at the moment, VULKANO, they’re Swedish and I love them so much. Check them out! Your new album, Girl Talk is getting good reviews and showing a more “pop-punk” side of Kate Nash. Why did you decide take the album in this direction? KATE: Just because of what was going on in my personal life. I have had 7 years of experience in studios and touring, I needed to explode. I think music is the healthiest place to put all your angst and problems. I think “My Best Friend Is You” was a step towards Girl Talk. You will be involved in the Broadway musical, Only Gold. Can you elaborate a little bit on how that project came about and what people can expect? KATE: Andy Blankenbuehler approached me a few years ago and told me about the story. When he told me he wanted to use all of my music for it I was so shocked and couldn’t really imagine it. But then I saw the work he was doing and how much it fit with my music. It was so cool to see my music in a totally different context. I went to New York recently to work on filling in the gaps of the story with songs. I’m so excited about this project; It’s all about passion, love, riches, choices and mid-life crises. Basically it’s about figuring out life, and it’s set in Paris in the 20’s when the Maharaja came over. So it has all this relatable content set in this really fun, luxurious environment. Your tour is starting on your side of the pond and moving over to the US shortly. In your opinion, what would you say is the biggest difference of your fans in the UK compared to your fans in the US? KATE: That’s a tough one; I don’t know! There’s a cool thing happening with my fans, it’s becoming more of a universal bond. They all know each other worldwide and all make friends on the Internet. Some of them become pen pals and tell me about each other all over the globe, it’s really sweet. I think Americans have really embraced my change, but so have my UK fans. I guess my UK fans have ownership of me and the US kind of adopted me. I love them all! Since this is the “Future Issue” of DList Magazine, what would you say is the near future for PopMusic in general? KATE: I dunno. I hope there’s some kind of implosion or explosion, just something refreshing and not just euro-trashy dance music. I love Lorde. She excites me. Grimez’s new record also excites me. I’m really intrigued to see what Marina & the Diamonds will do with her next record too.

The last person who made me laugh WAS MY MOM :). My favorite television show is MODERN FAMILY. My favorite comedians are: ALL THE ONE’S I WORK WITH! ERIN FOLEY, DANA EAGLE, JASON DUDEY AND FORTUNE FEIMSTER. Three words I would use to describe my comedy: SMART, EDGY, HILARIOUS. The best part of being Dana Goldberg is: I DO IT BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE (INTERPRET HOW YOU WILL).
38
Was there a specific moment when you realized that stand-up comedy was your calling? DANA: I auditioned for a show that was produced annually in Albuquerque, which raised money for higher education scholarships for lesbians in the community. They gave me a seven-minute set in front of 650 people in a sold out theater. I could see my heart beating through my shirt before I went out on stage. I hit my first big joke and heard the most deafening laughter I had ever heard in my life. At that moment I knew this was what I was meant to do. I felt like I could fly. How was your experience in The Advocate’s “Stand Out: The National Queer Comedy Search?” DANA: I had such a good time in that competition. It was an honor to be chosen as one of the top fifteen tapes to be considered in the initial competition out of almost 80 comedians who submitted around the country. After a two week national vote, I ended up in first place by a substantial amount of votes. The top eight flew to Chicago to compete in front of a live audience and three judges. I ended up placing in the top three with two other very talented comics. I’m grateful to have the experience and another title to add to my bio. You are very involved with fundraising for HIV/AIDS and bringing awareness to these illnesses, why are you particularly passionate about this cause? DANA: When I started my career in Albuquerque, one of the organizations that helped support and promote my shows was New Mexico AIDS Services. I have some friends who are directly affected and many more indirectly affected by the disease. It’s important to me to support the organizations that supported me. Each year I produce a show in Albuquerque, NM called The Southwest Funnyfest where I bring in three headlining comedians from around the country. It’s going on its 8th year, and I’m proud to say we’ve raised over $20,000 for NMAS. Are you excited for your visit to Seattle at the end of January? DANA: I LOVE Seattle. I think it’s a fantastic city with a great community. I try and get up there to perform at least once a year. I always schedule an extra day to spend time with my dear friends in the area. The first time I visited the city I borrowed a friend’s car that wasn’t an automatic. I got stuck on one of the hills by the market. I remember thinking “how the hell am I going to let go of the clutch and hit the gas without rolling back into the person behind me or completely pealing out?” I imagined the front wheels lifting off the ground and the car just tumbling backwards. Needless to say I burned some rubber and made it out alive.

THE FUTURE IS NOW If it’s not noticeable enough from the abundant amount of construction cranes around the city, Seattle is growing. And it’s not just apartments and condos popping up, it’s new projects that are going to continue to push Seattle into the “major metropolitan” category. Whether you are for growth in our city or not, the fact is you better get ready because these new projects are coming regardless, and who knows, you may just enjoy seeing the emerald city sparkle under the glow of these vast improvements. NEW TUNNEL INSTEAD OF VIADUCT In late 2015, the beautiful route with the view of Puget Sound will be no more due to “Bertha,” the world’s largest tunneling machine. She is plowing through eight different types of soil to make way for the new waterfront tunnel, intended to replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct. The tunnel will run approximately two miles long and 58 feet wide, carrying State Route 99 under downtown from SoDo up to SLU. If following big ‘ole “Bertha” live gets you all excited; you can do so on Washington State Department of Transportation’s construction camera, or of course, stalk her on Facebook.
40
NEW SODO SPORTS ARENA Ever since the announcement of possibly having the Sonics return to Seattle, our hopes keep getting crushed but we haven’t lost faith, as steps towards building a multi-purpose sports and entertainment arena in SoDo are still happening. This arena could make our fantasies of a new NBA team for Seattle come true and potentially an NHL team as well. Of course there are those few Seattleites that would prefer to have none of the above. There is speculation that building another arena in SoDo will block access to the Port of Seattle and cause more traffic congestion and the arena will increase taxes if it is not 100% privately financed. Ex-Mayor, Mike McGinn, was a big supporter of the arena, but it’s still up in the air if the new Mayor, Ed Murray, will upkeep the plans or put them through the shredder.
SLS HOTEL If you haven’t noticed the huge gaping hole by 5th and Columbia you should probably stop texting and walking. It’s hard to imagine that that hole will house Seattle’s tallest new building in two decades. The building (to be finished by mid2016) will include the luxurious SLS hotel, which is owned by SBE Entertainment Group LLC. The Los Angeles-based company also operates Hyde nightclubs and the Katsuya and Cleo restaurant brands across the country. The hotel will only occupy 14 floors of the $400 million skyscraper, 2nd through the 15th, but don’t be surprised if the numbers are a little off as most hotels usually avoid including a 13th floor. It was no brainer for SBE to bring SLS to Seattle with its growing market needing more hospitality options.
“ECHO” ADDITION TO THE OLYMPIC SCULPTURE PARK The artistic layout of Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park will be getting ahead in 2014… literally. Internationally acclaimed artist Jaume Palensa’s 46-foot Echo sculpture will be installed along the waterfront sometime next year. Echo is a reference of the mountain nymph’s head from Greek mythology. As the story is told, Echo offended Zues’s wife Hera when she kept her engaged in a conversation so Hera couldn’t spy on one of Zueus’s amours. For punishment Hera removed her of speech except for the ability to repeat the last words of another. Talk about karma; no pun intended. The sculpture is relocating from NYC’s Madison Square Park and will be fulfilling the artist’s vision of having Echo looking out over the Puget Sound in the direction of Mount Olympus; makes sense.
AFRICATOWN SEATTLE Seattle’s historically black neighborhood, the Central District, now boasts the most recent “Africatown” in the nation. Joining the likes of Los Angeles, Harlem, Manhattan, Paris, Tulsa and the Twin Cities— branches of the nationwide Asset Based Community Development initiative aim to empower black communities and leverage affirmative cultural assets of the African-Immigrant and African American communities. Many historically black businesses, soul food restaurants, Ethiopian restaurants, and landmarks of black history live in the Central District, making it a hub for those of African descent in the Seattle area. Africatown is a center of commerce and culture for the community, and aims to provide resources and support to community members.

ALOHA TRAVEL TIME
Plane: 5 hours 45 minutes. Average round trip ticket $300 $400 Sailing: around 24 days Swimming: approximately 75 days (39 min/mile)
DESTINATION TIP • Recommended to purchase tickets at least four months in advance for best deals. • Cheapest days to purchase a flight are Mondays and Tuesdays. • Current cheapest competing airlines: Hawaiian Air, Alaskan Air, Allegiant Air • Considerably cheaper to fly in from the West Coast (lucky for us!)
You may not think it, but winter is the best season to visit our 50th state. The temperature fluctuates between the 70s-80s, and it is the best time for surfing. Also, avoiding the droves of tourists that flood the beaches during the spring and summer seasons makes it all the better to get out to the Aloha State during our chilly winter in the northwest.
GETTING AROUND
Beach hopping around the islands require some form of transportation. Many tourists opt for the affordable, yet dangerous, option of a scooter. While this is one way of doing it, we don’t recommend being hit by annoyed locals while swerving between cars on King Kamehameha Highway. Rent a car instead.
DESTINATION TIP • Rental cars are available on all the main islands and typically cost $35 to $50 a day and $175 to $250 a week. It’s wise to book a car before arrival; browse websites of the major rental companies to find the best price. • On the larger islands, half- and full-day sightseeing bus tours are available for $60 to $100. Specialized tours include whale-watching cruises, bicycle tours, snorkeling trips, overnight tours and helicopter tours.

While it is amazing to shack up right on the beach in a quaint Hawaiian hotel, don’t be sticker shocked when rooms will run you anywhere from $300-$600 a night for the upper echelon of hotel choices. Although there are cheaper options a few blocks off the beach, it may be a better option to look into a vacation home rental.
DESTINATION TIP • Renting someone’s home may sound expensive, but if you factor in cooking your own meals, free parking and all the other comforts of home are rolled in for less than $200 a night, it’s a steal! To see some of the options for vacation rentals visit www. homeaway.com
DINING
Don’t waste your trip to paradise eating at chain restaurants and fast food. There are many local Hawaiian treasures hiding just under the radar. Here are some local choices that will have you dreaming of your next trip back to the islands. Hukilau Café located in Laie this is the quintessential Hawaiian grub spot. You may have seen it on the movie 50 First Dates, but don’t think that this is some made-up Hollywood spot. The breakfast choices are amazing including fried rice and banana pancakes. Kailua Farmer’s Market - The Farmer’s Market takes place every Thursday between 5:00AM and 7:30PM at the parking garage right behind Long’s Drug store in downtown Kailua. While this isn’t your typical restaurant setting, the market showcases North Shore Cattle Co. serving their signature naturally grown beef in an assortment of ways such as steak dinner plates, hamburgers and sausage. Starpoint Catering, and DaSpot are also regulars at the market serving Italian and Egyptian dinner plates.

YEAR IN REVIEW So, despite the dire predictions of the Mayans (and anyone still doing enough LSD to take the predictions of people who ripped people’s hearts out to appease a sun god seriously), 2013 went ahead and happened just like any other year. Well, maybe not just like any year; the first year post-non-apocalypse certainly had its surreal moments, in which we all sort of wondered if maybe an asteroid did hit us, and we unwittingly ended up in some kind of purgatory which-unsurprisingly--is only slightly more absurd than what we’re familiar with. Let’s review.
THE ONSLAUGHT OF CELEBRITY BABIES
THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
• Unless you’re of the Amish variety that doesn’t have its own paradoxical reality show, or spent most of the summer in a in a nice, relaxing coma, there’s pretty much no way you’re not aware of two babies born in 2013: HRH Prince George of Cambridge, future King of England, and North West, the spawn of Kimye. Both have at least one parent who does nothing professionally but enjoy being born rich and socially entitled out in public where people can photograph them, and both somehow dominated the legitimate news cycle for weeks at a time before even leaving the womb. I’d feel bad for these kids, born immediately and irrevocably into the flash of a paparazzo camera, if it weren’t for the fact that they could each just use their trust fund to buy themselves an island or three to escape it all whenever they felt like it.
44
• There isn’t a face-palm hard enough for these shenanigans. Watching the most recent of these now-regular partisan standoffs had all the thrill of watching a sixth grade recess basketball game descend into yelling over a bad foul call until someone hucks the ball over the fence so no one can play, only with less maturity and perspective. Whether or not you think one team was trying to change the rules mid-game (as many of us do) and generally behaving more like petty douchebags than the other, we are all a little stupider for having to watch a stream of grown people--ostensibly “leaders”-give endless speeches that amounted to little more than, “well, they started it, and I’m telling Mom.”
www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com
GTA V BREAKS 7 GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS • Sure, we could all pretend to be surprised that the fastest/highest grossing entertainment property in history is an open-world video game allowing you to interact with meth dealers, hookers, and a wealth of sub-machine guns in a consequence-free environment. But if you’ve spent any significant amount of time with the human race, there is nothing shocking about this. The rampant success of the fifth game in the Grand Theft Auto franchise is more like Kim Kardashian posing naked for Playboy at this point: we may have been shocked and titilated the first time it happened, but now it’s just a predictable and sad reminder of how jaded and easily bored we’ve become.
A-ROD GETS CANNED •The most remarkable thing about Alex Rodriguez’s fall from grace is, on a grand scale, how little of a shit anyone really gave. I mean, previous revelations about Lance Armstrong and Mark McGuire’s use of chemicals to play their sports in God-mode were met with a sense of personal public betrayal and indignation rarely seen since the Watergate scandal. But by the time we got to A-Rod this year, the public just shrugged and let out a collective “Meh.” By now we’ve come to see PED abuse by athletes less as fresh moral outrage fodder and more like prostitution in a strip club--a sad thing to be discouraged, but something you just kind of assume happens fairly regularly.
THE POPE CALLS IT QUITS • Because my knowledge of the Catholic church is limited almost entirely to cheap shots about pedophilia and Dan Brown novels, I don’t know much about Pope Benedict XVI outside of how well the Internet has documented his eerie resemblance to Emporer Palpatine. But his sudden decision to become the first papal Sarah Palin and throw in the (probably Turkish, hand-gold-threadembroidered) Pope towel early left an opening for the consistently surprising and bizarrely rational Pope Francis. Pope Frank has gone rogue since his election, saying outrageous things like “maybe not all heathens burn in Hell” and “guys, maybe we should obsess less about sex and work on this world poverty thing for a while.” For many of us non-Catholics who may have mocked the cries of how “progressive” it was for the Church to let a guy from a continent not entirely populated by white people where the magic hat for a while, we’re finding ourselves pleasantly shocked by his maverick style of papacy.
MILEY CYRUS BAD-TOUCHES OUR EYES • I am not particularly a fan of Miley Cyrus’ music, past or present; and I admit just watching her truly deranged, bumbling attempts at teddy bear-driven sexuality on the VMAs this year made me feel like I was being water-boarded with toilet run-off from a Mississippi truck stop. But while the blogosphere has rushed to proclaim her either to be in the middle of some kind of “meltdown,” a young girl being horribly exploited, or both, I’m not totally convinced Miley isn’t just trolling the crap out of the entire planet. I mean, there’s been none of the lunatic Twitter rants or public Xanax blackouts I associate with the Amanda Bynes-es or Lindsay Lohans of the world, and this girl got people like Wolf freaking Blitzer to try to explain words like “twerk” and “ratchet” on primetime cable news. She seems to find the whole thing hilarious, and to genuinely give a fraction of a fuck what anyone thinks at this point. If I’m forced to call Avril Lavigne “punk rock” because she wears smoky eye make-up and skirts from Hot Topic while singing country music, I feel like Miley’s standing double middle-finger to society’s expectations of a former Disney princess qualify for the title honorarily.
WALTER WHITE BREAKS COMPLETELY BAD • I feel comfortable saying that, even if you’ve never visited the realm of Westeros, you were probably at least aware of the Red Wedding, because I have never watched a single episode of the series Breaking Bad and was somehow still breathlessly awaiting a conclusion after all the hype surrounding its finale. I’ve heard so much about the tragic anti-hero Walter White and his tweaked-out sidekick Jesse over the last several years that I sort of feel like I’ve been along for the whole ride, and have a lot of anger toward someone named Skylar for reasons I can’t even begin to explain. The main reason I haven’t watched BB is simply that it looks far too good, and I know that as soon as I start watching it, I will end up having to call work and explain that I’m donating a kidney to a poor kid in India and will need the next several weeks off so that I can watch the entire goddam thing. So while I haven’t seen it--yet--I have thought, read, heard, and talked enough about this show’s finale that I’ll always remember it happening. If nothing else, the show that made it seem legit for normal adults to talk knowledgeably about methamphetamine in public definitely deserves an epic nod as it heads into the sunset.
BEN AFFLECK ANNOUNCED AS BATMAN • The surge in well-acted, complex, morally ambivalent comic book movies that attract a general audience has brought the selfrighteous whining of the Internet fanboy into the mainstream (finally!), and nothing has demonstrated that more clearly than the announcement that Ben Affleck would take on the role of Batman in Zach Snyder’s rebooted Superman franchise. Like a giant, porn-and-catvideo-filled three year-old, the entire Internet went into Level 5 tantrum, shrieking that they would rather hold their breath until they died than watch Matt Damon’s lesser half forever ruin their Dark Knight. While it’s always refreshing to see people act so gratuitously entitled, I’d just like to direct the Internet’s attention to pretty much any Batman movie between the one starring Michael Keaton and the one starring Christian Bale as a counterargument. Especially if the steaming pile of Val Kilmer that was Batman Forever didn’t ruin the character for you, pretty sure nothing can.
www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com
EDWARD SNOWDEN LEAKS UNCONTROLLABLY • Honestly, the entire Snowden incident is far too bizarre, important and nuanced to discuss adequately in such a small space--the questions of privacy versus security are fairly vital to our particular moment in history, and Snowden’s actions one way or another certainly riled that debate. But the affair wasn’t without a certain degree of ridiculousness; watching pundits and analysts soberly call Snowden a computer “genius” for using his IT admin login to steal important people’s documents soundly demonstrated why 1) IT departments get to do whatever they want, because almost no one has the very faintest idea what they do, and 2) why IT departments hate everybody else. Plus, even the staunchest Snowden supporter has to admit that there is a certain hilarious irony in declaring the US to be a vicious police state and then seeking asylum in Vladimir “Indefinite Detention for Feminists and Gays, Why Not?” Putin’s backyard.

MADE WITH LOVE We honored Adam Jackson as our “Young Northwest” pick for favorite artist a few years back. His remarkable artisitc skills are now being translated into his new women’s apparel line “Lovedust.”
PHOTOS WRITTEN
Lovedust By James Zachodni
You are an accomplished artist already. What made you want to jump into apparel design? ADAM: My artwork has always lent itself to apparel and I’ve been working in that industry since I got my first illustration gig. Clothing has been a focus for me long before the inception of Lovedust. I think I’ve finally met the right people, and am more focused. I’ve got a long way to go, but I think I’ve acquired enough experience now to have confidence in myself among my peers I respect in the industry. Talk about how the name/brand Lovedust came into being. ADAM: The name describes the mess that’s often made when trying to create something beautiful, and the process that art goes through. I was actually inspired by pencil shaving and the mess that had settled underneath my drawing board. I looked around my dusty studio and thought “ I’m doing what I love, surround by dust.” That equaled LOVEDUST! Branding wise, I felt the name sounded mysterious, a little dark, but friendly and whimsical. Which was perfect. Was there any inspiration from other designers/brands when creating this line? ADAM: My inspiration was to create clothing for the women who have inspired my art. I wanted to create clothing that I was already drawing on the models in my illustrations. That was really the inspiration for the brand. Nothing is more satisfying that having friends I have drawn for years, and been personal muses, now wearing the artwork that I created. Lovedust represents the freedom of fashion without a definitive style, the love of unique interpretations of cultural trends, and a passion for bold personal expression. What do you see as the final vision for Lovedust? What kind of stores will carry it, what are some ideas for the future of the brand? ADAM: The most important thing to me about the brand right now is that it represents a high level of artistic skill, a unique sense of style, and maintains a focus on hand drawn artwork offered on the highest quality fabrics. We are currently doing a special holiday release exclusively through our website www.lovedustbrand.com. I want people who buy Lovedust to feel like it’s worth every penny, and that they are receiving something personally from me. I’m excited to share Lovedust with the whole world, and at the same time want to give great care toward all retailers and boutiques Lovedust might be working with in the near future. Currently, our website is the only place to purchase. This may change very soon! As far as a final vision? To have a profitable company that gives me the artistic freedom I have always dreamed of. Sky is the limit.

FRUITFUL FITNESS
A COLORFUL NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT GYMS
written by Charity Mainville photo provided by Orangetheoryfitness.com
Fitness trends are constantly changing and evolving. In the 1980’s weight training inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger was a must, since then there has been Curves, yoga, pilates, hot yoga, hot pilates, pole dancing, barre, Zumba and Crossfit. Before you know it, your gym will be offering twerking classes inspired by Miley Cyrus and Juicy J. Before you start shaking your booty and fooling yourself into thinking that you’re good enough to audition for a music video, you might want to think about going orange. You may have already noticed the orange trend in Seattle, with the randomly placed orange bikes around the city or orange men walking down the street. Don’t worry, it’s not an alien invasion; it’s a fitness invasion of a challenging, intense but fun workout Seattle has yet to experience. Orangetheory’s two locations (Queen Anne and Capitol Hill) will be opening in February. Each urban-industrial studio will offer one hour group training session with loud, upbeat music and funny, engaging and supportive trainers. Between high intensity cardio intervals on the treadmill and strength training bouncing from stationary water rowers, dumbbells, medicine balls, bosu and ab slides, you may feel sore the next day but it will be worth the muscle tone and the 500+ calories you burned. So what makes Orangetheory unique? This is one of the only group fitness classes that has the scientific ability to gauge if you’re working too hard or not hard enough. Each person wears a heart rate monitor (included in the membership fee) that is displayed on a large screen in the front that tells his or her heart rate along with calories burned. This allows you to make sure you’re maximizing your results each and every time. If you want to jump on the orange train, Orangetheory is offering 20% off its rates during presales. Anyone that signs up now will be invited to the VIP grand opening party along with various happy hours and community events they will be having. Don’t miss this opportunity to become a part of the city’s newest fitness craze and whipping yourself into the best shape of your life.

FITNESS THEORY • The color orange is significant because it corresponds with a specific heart rate zone (8491% of your max heart rate). If you can spend 12-20 minutes during the class in the “orange” zone, you will get the best results and your body will continue to burn calories more efficiently for up to 36 hours after the workout! • Group classes will run from 5:30am-9pm Monday - Friday and roughly from 8-5 on Saturdays and Sundays. • Group classes have a maximum capacity of 24 members to keep you feeling like you’re a part of team, but still receive the attention you need from the fitness coach. GLOW-ON
YOUR FRIDAY NIGHT WILL NEVER BE THE SAME written by Jamei June photos by Gabe Zapata
It’s Friday night. You walk into a dark room, illuminated by neon lights and glow sticks while Electric Dance Music vibrates off the walls. Beads of sweat roll down your face as your body flows in sync with others around you for an entire hour. The music ends, you stop to lie down on the floor and allow your mind to relax for the last five minutes. You’re probably thinking, “Who in their right mind would lie down on the floor of a nightclub?” No one would, at least I should hope not. But you would in a yoga studio! “Glow Yoga” is the future of yoga, changing your perspective on what to do on a Friday night. This new form of yoga allows you to meet new people in a vibrant environment while gaining a toned, sexy body. This trend has been popping up across the country, but Be One Yoga owners, Kami Betker and Elena Radic, are some of the first to offer the new style of exercise in the greater Seattle area. Be One Yoga wanted to build a community, Betker and Radic say, “We wanted to explore and include a younger crowd to make it fun so they can enjoy it with their friends instead of thinking it’s just a work out.” The Vinyasa class is held once a month, moving
50
at a faster pace called “power style.” The studio doors open early, allowing yogis to mingle while a DJ spins in the lobby- adding a social element to the fitness class. Both Betker and Radic passionately explain the habit changes that yoga encourages. Betker states, “There are so many forms of yoga. The Glow Yoga class is appealing because we’re having fun while still working out. It’s a healthier option for a Friday night.” Betker goes on to say that prior to finding yoga, she was extremely overweight: “I realized my unhealthy habits came from how I was eating and drinking. Those habits become less of a desire after you make the commitment [to yoga].” Radic confirms by exclaiming, “You find self-love when you practice yoga. You have second thoughts of how you want to treat your body.” Even if the idea of giving up your Friday night shenanigans is a struggle for your inner-socialite, this class is the perfect compromise. Starting at 9:30 p.m., and only lasting an hour, you’ll still have plenty of time to enjoy a night out- that is, if you aren’t completely satisfied with your evening already!

DR. FEEL-GOOD G-SPOT MEET G-SHOT
written by Jaime June
There is a special place in every woman where euphoria erupts, sparks fly, and if a lover finds it – she’ll beg them to stay. No, I am not talking about the heart. I am talking about the G-Spot. Since its official naming as the “Gräfenberg Spot” in the 1980’s (after German gynecologist, Ernst Gräfenberg), many have denied its existence. However, it has been clinically proven to be real time and time again. Whether you’re a lucky woman who experiences its stimulation regularly or one who frustratingly (and often) wants to call it an ‘early night,’ one thing we all can celebrate together is The G-Shot. The G-Shot is administered in a plastic surgery clinic and the actual procedure itself takes less than one minute. Essentially, it consists of a doctor injecting a filler, Hyaluronan, directly into a pre-designated area on the woman’s G-Spot. The physical effects are similar to that of a lip augmentation – just as collagen will make someone’s lips larger and more pronounced, the filler enhances the size of a woman’s G-Spot. Dr. Marshall T. Partington of Partington Plastic Surgery has been performing these augmentations for over eight years. He explains that the procedure demands absolutely no recovery time, is practically painless, and is a “quick, inexpensive orgasm pleaser.” Through word-of-mouth, the G-Shot has skyrocketed in popularity. Not shockingly, women in their twenties, senior citizens, and those in between have been dishing-out $1,250 for this procedure and experiencing heightened pleasure during orgasms because of it. While multiple generations of women are paying a nice chunk of change

for this enhancement, you may be wondering, “What if I have never found my G-Spot!?” One reason, alone, to go to the clinic: they specialize in helping each woman find hers individually. Dr. Partington confidently exclaims, “We can always find the G-Spot, no worries!” The staff asks the patient to identify the spot through a private selfexamination in the procedure room. He continues, “If [the patients] are unable to find it, we are here to guide them. We record this G-Spot location for the patient’s future G-Shots.” Undergoing this enhancement may bring up the potentially awkward situation of either letting your lover know that you are planning on getting the shot, or having to explain why you suddenly scream like porn star during sex. Partington says, “Talking to your partner about sexual satisfaction is healthy and advised. The best candidates are those who know what they want. If you have been ‘faking it,’ you will most likely no longer have to fake it. With that being said, this is a quick procedure that can be done before or after work, and even on your lunch break. No one has to know.” According to Clinic Manager, Mandy Mills, the main disadvantage of the G-Shot is that “Like Botox, the effects wear off in about 6 months. Once you get accustomed to this new sexual sensation, it’ll be very hard to not continue wanting it.” Basically, after experiencing orgasms with the G-Shot, sex without this enhancement will no longer be an option. So ladies, procede pleasurably, at your own risk.
LOSE THE EXCESS Would you skip sex for four weeks to have the perfect looking lady parts? Labiaplasty is done for both cosmetic and medical purposes; a surgeon removes excess skin of the labia that may be causing discomfort and/or embarrassment. Partington Plastic Surgery’s website states, “Labiaplasty can greatly enhance the cosmetic appearance of the vagina, giving many women greater confidence and self-esteem.” HAIR DOWN THERE Why is the decision not to be hairy so expensive?! Luckily there is Laser Hair Removal. It may sound scary, but from personal experience, it is fast, effective and far less painful than waxing. After the first session, patients will notice a change in the
www.DLISTMAGAZINE.com
coarseness or amount of hair; after six sessions, any unwanted hair in the treated areas is gone. Once you add up the price of razors and shaving cream throughout the years and compare it to just six sessions of laser treatment, it’s worth it! LIP SERVICE Lindsay Lohan and Meg Ryan’s infamous lipplumper disasters might frighten some; however, lip augmentation can enhance natural beauty, when done correctly. Partington’s plastic surgery staff spends quality time consulting with each patient discussing not just the desired look, but also what would be best for every individual’s face. Having a consultation might just make you more kissable under the mistletoe this holiday season.

STRIKING GOLD
GOLD ISN’T JUST FOR YOUR RINGS AND NECKLACES ANYMORE written by Jamei June photo provided by Orogold
The legend of gold helping one to remain youthful forever has been rumored as far back as 750 BC with the Romans using it to cure skin lesions and wounds. It is said the Egyptians believed gold could cure anything that ailed you and Cleopatra herself wore a pure gold mask nightly to keep her flawless skin looking young. Historians believed Alchemy (said to have contributed to the development of modern day chemistry and medicine) created a mythical “elixir of life” that contained drops of liquid gold to obtain immortality. Perhaps in the future gold may become a piece of what leads to immortality but as for the present day, it has been proven to speed up cellular processes, activate regeneration and restore elasticity in tissue. Seattleites can now benefit from this precious metal and have youthful looking skin with OROGOLD Cosmetics, opening its first Washington location in Bellevue Square Mall. The skin care line infuses 24K gold into each of the products and treatments, providing benefits that will make it worth your every pretty penny.
OROGOLD boasts noninvasive techniques, yet yields similar results to plastic surgery or Botox for wrinkle treatment and skin tightening; making it a great option for those who fear needles. OROGOLD starts off as low as $60 for body care and go up to $5,000 for its 24K Nano set with advanced Nanotechnology. As explained by part owner of the Bellevue store, Maya Valerie, the value of each product doesn’t have much to do with the actual amount of gold it contains. She goes on to say, “The amount of gold in our products is not equivalent to the amount of gold used in jewelry. The products are not solely priced based on the amount of gold in the formulas but also according to the very unique, cutting edge ingredients we use.” The fully decorated white boutique’s knowledgeable staff focuses on the products themselves, but guests can also experience a vibrant gold VIP facial room with an anti-aging 24K gold treatment that is customized based on your skin type and needs for a mere $1,000.
PRECIOUS METAL • One of the most luxurious treatments is OROGOLD’S 24K Deep Tissue Rejuvenation Mask & Collagen Eye Renewal Mask. With the similar appearance of what Cleopatra would have worn, its blend of Gold with Lavender and Collagen repairs and rejuvenates any signs of aging. -$1,398.00 • OROGOLD selected Denise Richards as their spokesperson. Despite being 42-years-old, Richards’ flawless skin and beauty surely endorse the fact that gold flakes may be the secret to aging gracefully. • Although brand new to Washington, OROGOLD Cosmetics can be found all over the world. The store’s standard of impeccable displays and products seduced customers in Dubai’s Mall of Emirates as well as in Barcelona, Moscow, New York City and many other US locations. • Gold isn’t the only benefit OROGOLD products include. You can benefit from other luxurious ingredients such as caviar and diamonds in their exclusive sets.
