Hornet boys’ track and field rebuilds BY BRIAN WIERIMA

After graduating a big 2013 senior class, the Frazee boys’ track and field team will have to replenish its depth for the upcoming season. The Hornets will have two seniors on the roster in Jesse Trusty and Tristan Watchorn, while having 16 out for the team in grades nine through 11th. “Our numbers are about average this year, but we only have two seniors,” said Frazee head boys’ coach Brian Tangen. “We lost a lot of points to graduation, so we have some big shoes to fill. We are not real deep.” Trusty will be one of the main contributors in the sprints, while Watchorn brings valuable distance experience. The junior class also boasts of some good experience in Colton Olson (distance), Brady Bellefeuille (jumps and mid-
distance), Roger Thorp and Garrett Malstrom (throws). “We also have a good crew of sophomores in the sprints and hurdles,” Tangen included. “I think we can put together a pretty good 3,200-meter relay team and a 400 relay team. We have some work to do in the 800 relay and the 1,600 relay, though.” With depth being an issue, progression through the season will be vital for those who are out. “We have no clear favorites for getting to state, but I feel we do have a couple of individuals and a relay that have a shot to advance,” Tangen said. “We just have to wait and see what we can do when we get outside.” The 2014 Frazee boys’ track schedule: April 11 at Perham 15 at Perham 22 at Park Rapids 24 at Hawley

Lady Hornets to be paced by runners BY BRIAN WIERIMA

The sprinting and distance events will pace the Frazee girls’ track and field teams for the 2014 season, as good talent and experience reigns in those events. Although the Lady Hornets have a small senior class out, two of them in Ashley Laine and Hannah Brady will anchor the sprinting events, while junior captain Taylor Wutzke will join them in the short-distance races. The distance events will be a bit younger, but a strength, as the Morgan sisters of Kaitlin (sophomore) and Ellie (eighth grader), along with freshman Kiara Dekarske and sophomore Holly McCamant will join them in the 800 through 3,200-meter races. “Our distance should be strong,” said Frazee girls’ coach Jim Jacobson. Hurdles will be strong, as well, with Laine returning as a seasoned hurdler, along with junior Briana Blauert and sophomore Maddie Rue. “Since we have good sprinters
and distance runners, our relays also should benefit,” Jacobson said. “We should be able to fill all the events in every meet.” Wutzke will be a leader in the field events in the triple jump, while Brady will take on the pole vaulting duties. Numbers are seasoned for Frazee golf Majority of the 2013 contributors return to girls’ team BY BRIAN WIERIMA

The majority of the Frazee girls’ golf team will be back after a strong showing in 2013. The Lady Hornets will have good experience back, which includes seniors Cara Roers and Becky Karasch. But youth also is prevalent in the roster, with 2013 low-scorer back in freshman Maddisan Parsons. “Maddisan was an All-Conference golfer as just an eighth grader last year,” said Frazee head girls’ coach Dave Conzemius. “(Junior) Alexis Parsons and Karasch also return after being two of our top three golfers last year.” Others who will be in the top six include sophomore Sydney Dahlgren and freshman Brittany Lormis. Sophomore Rhiannon Flemming is a newcomer to the team. “We hope to finish in the top half of the conference and get three or four as All-Conference,” Conzemius said. “On a good day, we could finish as high as second possibly.” The Lady Hornets will also have three seventh graders on the team in Delaney and Isabella Matejka and Savanna Bauer. Frazee was bumped from Class 1A to Class 2A, where they will join Section 8-2A, which has two-time state champion Detroit Lakes residing in. “We don’t have many goals for the section, because it’s going to be a very tough one, but we are going to go out and have fun, while trying to get better,” Conzemius added. Frazee boys’ golf to be improved in ‘14 There will be an up-tick in expectations in the Heart O’Lakes Conference for the Frazee boys’ golf team, which finished fourth in 2013. The Hornets return a host of juniors with varsity experience, including Calvin Streeper, who nearly missed a state berth in last year’s Section 8-1A meet. “In our conference, I would like to see us move up from last year’s fourth-place finish,” said Frazee head coach Jason Reierson. “The bulk of our team are juniors with some varsity experience.” Those juniors include Streeper,

have to compete against the likes of Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls and other larger schools in Section 8-2A. “Moving in with Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls and some of the other area powers will be very challenging for us,” the Frazee coach included.

The lone senior will be John Geis, who had a strong offseason playing golf. “Calvin Streeper, Isaac Schermerhorn and Brady Mickelson will be our core starting the season, with hopefully someone else stepping up to help our team scores,” Reierson said. “I think Calvin and Isaac can challenge to finish toward the top at most of our meets.” The Hornets were also bumped up to Class 2A, where now they will

Strong pitching and depth to pace Frazee baseball BY BRIAN WIERIMA

The Frazee baseball team wants to be a stopper this season, as in stopping New York Mills’ three-consecutive Section 6-1A championship streak. The Hornets have the ammo to do such an endeavor with an abundance of experience back and the addition of Tanner Karger, who moved back from Dilworth-GlyndonFelton. But most of all, the middle of the batting lineup will be tough outs and the pitching depth will be a strength. “We have a lot of pop in the middle of our lineup and our pitching depth and experience will be a key,” said Frazee first-year head coach Andrew Mekalson. The Hornet pitching staff will be led by senior returner Cory Wokasch, who will also serve as a top catcher and is Frazee “best all-around player”. Senior Grant Overland will be a strong pitcher, as well as catcher and shortstop, while
senior Andrew Wendt bolsters the mound staff. Other pitchers who will add precious innings include sophomore Gunner Hilde, Karger (a senior) and senior Hunter Sorenson. The Frazee batting order will have good potential to create runs, with Wokasch batting third, Karger clean-up and Wendt in the five spot. Mekalson started out coaching this year’s senior class as eighth graders as a junior coach and moved up with them to junior varsity and also has been the assistant varsity coach the last three years. “We have strong under classmen coming up through the ranks and will keep the upper classmen working hard to keep their starting spots,” Mekalson said. Assistant coaches include former LP-A head coach Brandon Olson, with JH coaches being Bryan Gillespie and Ryan Vigen.

Experience abounds for the Frazee softball squad BY BRIAN WIERIMA

A deep pitching rotation and a contingent of seasoned fielders will once again make the Frazee softball team one to contend with for the 2014 season. The Lady Hornets return a bevy of talent and experience on the mound, as well behind the plate and on the left side of the infield. It starts with third-year pitcher junior Jo Shipman, who brings smart pitching and location. “Jo will be our leader on the mound,” said Frazee head coach Dave Trautman. “She has learned her craft well and has improved on her location and doing well changing her speed.” But the catcher position will bring in a ton of experience in five-year starter senior Taylor Tappe. In other words, she has seen basically every situation in her career. “Having a five-year catcher is huge,” Trautman said. The infield will be anchored by fouryear starter senior Autumn Mahoney, while seasoned junior Kennady Barlund will man the third base corner. “We should be pretty strong on the left side of the infield,” Trautman said. “But depending on who will be playing what positions, we should be pretty solid defensively.” The outfield will have all new players, with an open competition for all three positions. With that experience back, the offense will benefit with top five hitters returning. “We should have a little of both

Laker baseball team reloads for 2014 There will be plenty of opportunities for younger players BY BRIAN WIERIMA

There will be plenty of opportunities for the inexperienced players coming up to the Detroit Lakes baseball team after the Lakers had a big class of seniors graduate off of last year’s team. The Lakers will have just five seniors this year, but only four to five total players with varsity experience. “It’s an issue we’ll have to deal with this season,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs on the team’s experience shortcomings. There will be a good foundation in the pitching rotation, with three returning after solid outings last year. Juniors Connor Johnson, Ryan Cihak and senior Sam Voz will anchor a shallow pitching staff, with all three having the ability to throw strikes. “Sam had a good summer pitching (for the Legion team) and if we keep progressing, we should have three solid starters,” Fuhs said. “They will be pitching the bulk of the innings for us.” Others who will be called upon to pitch will be senior Ben Thompson, newcomer senior Nolan Singer, junior Cooper Heimark and sophomore Matt Haire, who was DL’s top junior varsity pitcher last year. For the first time in many years, catching will also be an inexperienced position, with junior Sam Beck coming up as the starter. Sophomores Andrew Dahl and Corey Hanson will also add depth to the position. “It’s been about 10 to 12 years where we’ve been very good at catcher, so hopefully Sam can fill that need, as well,” Fuhs said. The left side of the infield will be anchored by returners Cihak and Voz at shortstop and third base, while depth will be provided by Haire and Heimark. Senior Cole Hegg will start at second base, with juniors Jalen Young and John Schumaker also seeing time there. At first base, sophomore Trey Lyngaas will provide good height and a bigger target, with junior Joe Voz as backup. “We will need guys playing different positions, so we’ll have to be versa-

tile,” Fuhs said. “Some of the positions will also be determined how the bat, as well.” Johnson will be the regular centerfielder when not pitching, while senior Jackson Lyngaas and Thompson will fill the corner spots. “I am confident all can catch the ball,” Fuhs included. Other outfielders will include Singer, junior Boyd Bradbury and Beck, when he isn’t catching. The offense will be led by five batters who had some relative success last year. Jackson Lyngaas and Cihak will lead off the order, followed by Sam Voz, Johnson and Thompson. “The three other slots will be up for grabs,” Fuhs said. “The keys overall is we will need to make the routine plays
in the field and get better as the season goes on.” Power has not been a factor for or against the Lakers the last two seasons, with DL hitting two homers during that time span, but having none hit against them, either. “We don’t have to pound the ball around, we need to make contact to start with,” Fuhs said. Last year, the Mid-State Conference had a three-way tie for first, with Perham taking fourth place. But the Yellowjackets still finished in second place in the Class 2A state tournament, which shows the competitive edge to the conference.

There will be a little less room for error for the Detroit Lakes softball team, after they were bumped from Class 2A to Class 3A. But the challenge has been accepted with some good experience returning at key positions. “It comes down to pitching and defense, if we can play those two well, we’ll be in every game,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. Teams in Section 8-3A include Alexandria, Becker, Bemidji, Big Lake, Brainerd, Monticello, Moorhead, Sartell, Sauk Rapids-Rice, St. Cloud Apollo and St. Cloud Tech. Junior Chaz Butz returns for her fourth year on the mound for the Lakers and she will be joined by sophomore Emma Maguire. Both pitchers have shown to be consistent throwing strikes, while location and accuracy will also be a key ingredient. “Chaz throws strikes and hits her spots,” Kirchner said. “Both pitchers work hard and we’ll go with a rotation to start the season and see where it goes from there.”
The Lakers will have five seniors on the roster, while being bolstered by 15 juniors and some key sophomores. The infield will be strong on the right, with senior first baseman Brooke Olson returning, along with second baseman junior Carolyn Kinney. Sophomore Kyra Vagle will man third base after a Mid-State AllConference season last year. Vagle will also see some time pitching, as well. “Our only spot in the infield which will be inexperienced is shortstop, where freshman Emily Schiltz had a strong summer season,” Kirchner said. “She’s a good athlete and can handle it.” Junior Emily Seebold returns at catcher, while freshman Macy Kirchner will also see time behind the plate. There will be good competition in the outfield, with sophomore Haley Sonstegard, seniors Katie Colsen, Llecina Burnside, juniors Allison Dahring and Kennedy Erickson seeing time. Junior Rachel Ianiro also returns in right field and freshman Sydney Prussia will also see time at first base.
“We have a lot of people who can play with over 48 players out, so that’s a good problem to have,” Kirchner said. The Lakers have been very proficient at the plate the last several years, hitting over the .300 mark as a team. This season, there will be a good blend of speed and power, with Kinney being a solid lead-off hitter, followed by Vagle, Burnside, Seebold and Olson. “We have good speed up top with Kinney and Vagle, while Burnside is one of our best hitters at the No. 3 spot,” Kirchner said. “Then we bring power with Seebold and Olson, along with Sonstegard, who can hit it out of the park.” Other senior who will see time include Lindsey Baker and Alisha Kulzer, while Katherine Foltz will be manager. Macy Kirchner will also be a strong outfielder, when not catching. Overall, the challenge is much larger now that the Lakers will be the smallest school in Section 8-3A. “But that’s no excuse, we still need to go out and compete and we will, if we can pitch and play defense well,” Kirchner said. Newcomers to help Laker boys’ tennis BY BRIAN WIERIMA

Coming off a historical feat from 2013, the Detroit Lakes boys’ tennis team looks to build off that momentum for the upcoming spring season. For the first time in quite a long time, the Lakers were well represented in the Class 1A state tennis meet, as the Fondrick brothers of Isaac and Alex earned their way through section play. But the 2014 path became just a bit more difficult, after DL was bumped to Class 2A. “We’ll be the smallest school in Section 8-2A,” said DL head coach Patrick Starbeck. Section 8-2A includes Alexandria, Becker, Bemidji, Big Lake, Brainerd, Buffalo, Monticello, Moorhead, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, St. Michael, St. Cloud Tech and St. Cloud Apollo.
Despite the change, the Lakers still bring back a good load of experience, even though they lost Isaac Fondrick to graduation last year. “The majority of our upperclassmen put in a good amount of time playing matches over the summer and it’s showing in practice thus far,” Starbeck said. Junior Alex Fondrick will start out as DL’s top singles player, followed by junior Caleb Howard, sophomore Chandler Hanks and senior Austin Nelson. Howard will have a handle on No. 2 singles duties, while Hanks and Nelson will bounce from three to four throughout the season. “Our singles two through four are basically on the same level and that’s good, because we should be pretty tough at the fourth singles spot then,” Starbeck said. “Alex may start a little

slow at No. 1, but he should have a pretty good season ahead of him.” At doubles, seniors Colton Friesen and Luke Eggebraaten will hold the top duties, with veterans seniors Dylan Bremseth and Brady Crawford at No. 2. Newcomers senior Michael Herrmann and sophomore Jon Richards will have an inside track on the third doubles slot, with each already displaying a seasoned game, despite being their first year in the sport. “We have other younger players who will also fill in,” Starbeck said. “There are over 30 kids out, so that’s probably as much as we’ve had in the last 10 years.” The Lakers will look to win the Mid-State Conference crown, with only three teams vying for it, including Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and Park Rapids.
Perham and Wadena-Deer Creek each folded their programs. The hunger is thick on the Detroit Lakes boys’ golf team, as they prepare for the 2014 season with four returning off the 2013 Class 2A state runner-up team. First, the Lakers will have to feast on another competitive regular season schedule, before hopefully making another trip back to Jordan, where the Class 2A state meet will be held. “We return four hungry kids, they were disappointed in the outcome of last year’s state meet,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “But you can’t take anything away from Staples-Motley, they are a very good team, but I thought we had one of our better teams last year.” With Mid-State Conference rival Staples-Motley putting the end to DL’s two-year state championship reign last year, it’s time to start at the bottom of the hill and try to climb back up to the top. “We don’t even talk about state, because you have to win your section first,” Gorden added. The Lakers do lose some top-heavy talent in Austin Rusness and Karter Smith, who each were mainstays in the DL lineup the last five years. But senior Michael Herzog returns for his fifth season.

“Michael is a very import cog, he’s a talented individual and will be a leader on the team,” Gorden said. The Lakers also have juniors Ben Mallow, Christian Hedstrom and Tanner Schnathorst returning off of last year’s state team. “All four of those guys can go low in any meet,” Gorden said. “We also have good competition in our final two
spots, so I really like our depth.” Other varsity letterwinners who are back and will be competing for a spot include juniors Dahlen Olson, Austin Dodd, Luke Payne and freshman Isaac Cihak. “No one is guaranteed a spot, even our top four,” Gorden said. “We have many golfers who can compete for a varsity spot and if not there, on our ju-

The notoriety the Lakers are receiving is also been positive. “We’ve been invited to some of the best meets in the state, it’s too bad we can’t make all of them,” Harrier said. “It’s also a big compliment when coaches from other successful programs are asking how we are doing it. “It’s been fun.”

So what more can the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team possibly accomplish after winning the Class 2A state championship two years in a row, while leaving a trail of dominating victories along the way over the course of the last three years? Plenty. Yes, the Lakers return their full slate off the 2013 state championship team, including Class 2A state comedalists sophomore Kate Smith and senior Natalie Roth. Yes, the Lakers haven’t really been challenged the last two years in any meet. And yes, the Lakers will be overwhelming favorites to extend their state championship streak to three when June rolls around. But there are several feats the Lakers have not reached, yet, and one of the biggest is 296. “They are looking at making history,” said DL head coach Cali Harrier. “After shooting a 297 at the state last year and only being one stroke off of tying the all-time meet record, it’s definitely something they are striving for.” That 296 meet record was set by another girls’ golf dynasty of Minnewaska, which won state titles from 2006 through 2010. It’s a mark the Laker team has its sights set on, as well as having a meet where all six players shoot under 80. There is still a lot of focus and moti-

vation for these Lakers, as they enter the 2014 season with a 20-meet winning streak. Their last loss came 2012 when they took fifth place in the Red Wing Invite. “That’s impressive, because we’ve been in some very competitive meets over that time,” Harrier said. “But we try hard not to think of wins and losses, because we are not taking anything for granted. “It’s all about maintaining what we have accomplished thus far.” Another advantage the Lakers will have entering the season is the focus will be there for DL’s four seniors, who have already committed to their respective college golf teams and can just play their game starting April 10
with their opener in Becker. This Laker team has been together for five years and with the four seniors of Roth, Trisa Hutchinson, Matty Tschider and Emma Thompson making it their grand departure, there is motivation to make it memorable. “We know this will be our last run together and realize it will be an emotional season,” Harrier said. “But we are living by the saying ‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.’” There will be lots of competition on the team itself, as each player looks to be shooting low in each meet. Individually, the Lakers had three on the state podium last year, with

Strong depth to key Laker girls’ success BY BRIAN WIERIMA

The 2014 season is setting up to be a superb one for the Detroit Lakes girls’ track and field team and the hard work being put into it is reinforcing that notion. After winning each the Section 8-2A True Team and Mid-State Conference last year, the Lakers are in very good position to defend both titles with a load of top-heavy talent coming back, along with serious depth in the younger ranks. “We don’t just have good track kids, we have good athletes,” said DL head girls’ coach Mike Labine. “I have been pleased with the leadership shown by the upper classmen, they are setting the tone for each practice.” If the Lakers were to be put under a microscope, there would be very little weaknesses on display. Starting with the distance crew, experience is solid in the return of seniors Megan Ostlie, Sami Foltz, Rachel
Wentz, Tanisha Perlmutter and Anne Holzgrove. “They are all great leaders,” Labine said. “Megan and Sami will be near the front of the pack in most every meet. Mackenzie Ostlie will also be a top performer for us as a ninth grader.” In the mid-distance, contributors will include juniors Abby Ullyott, Lindsey Heinecke, Addie Kay Johnson, senior Karissa Berg and sophomore Sara Schumacher. “(The 400-800) is definitely strengths of our program right now,” Labine said. “ We have so many kids who are very versatile and can do different distances each meet.” Junior Shay Nielsen returns as an all-state shot putter, while also being a solid contributor in discus, as well. The depth will be inexperienced, as depth is being created. The jumping events have a good amount of talent, with juniors Allison Berg, Darci Molander, Sarah Halbakken and Hailey Jorgenson ready to score some big points.
“All are very talented jumpers who can also run the short sprints and our relays,” Labine said. Junior Kyley Foster returns as a front of the pack hurdler, with several younger kids developing. Foster also will be a leader in the pole vault, along with Schumacher and junior Katie Crawford. “Kyley was third in the section last year and is hoping to improve on that,” Labine said. “Sara vaulted extremely well at the end of the year and will be even better in her second season. We have several gymnasts who are learning the event and will be outstanding pole vaulters for us.” The sprints will also feature elite runners in Heinecke and Johnson, with the majority also being able to compete in anything from the 100 to 800 races. “We have an abundance of talent and the versatility to give us a lot of options,” Labine said. “We have a top performer in every event, now we just need to develop those
second and third kids.” The Lakers will be favorites entering the Section 8-2A True Team meet, but it will not be a given when the event is held at Mollberg Field May 6. “This isn’t a time to stand pat,” Labine said. “We want to continue to develop our depth, because we don’t want to be caught not having someone in an event due to injury.” The 2014 Detroit Lakes track and field schedule: March 28 at Concordia University Indoor Meet April 1 Detroit Lakes Invite 8 at Fergus Falls 11 at Moorhead

Laker boys’ track and field ready to defend titles BY BRIAN WIERIMA

There will be a pair of titles the Detroit Lakes boys’ track and field team will be looking to defend, while doing it with some seasoned and skilled athletes. The 2013 Lakers won each the Section 8-2A True Team championship and the MidState Conference title, with the majority of those same athletes back for the 2014 season. “Our team is definitely a factor in both the Mid-State and Section 8-2A True Team meets,” said DL head boys’ coach Bill Kvebak. “Both of these meets are goals for our team. Improvement is the overall goal I have for each athlete in our program. “If we have all of our athletes improve in their chosen events we will be successful and the conference and section championships will happen.”
The Lakers will be stacked in their running events, with Jake Fritz in the 400 and 800-meter runs, Isaac Clem (400-800), Zach Foltz (8003,200), Jonathon Hallisey (100-200 and long jump), Richard Bellefeuille (400-800), Robert Johnson (400-800), Sam Champa (100-200, triple and long jump), Brady Labine (200-400 and pole vault), Ross Kalberer (high jump, long and triple and 100-200), John Wiebolt (100-200 and triple jump), Derek Gray (100-400 and hurdles) and Kirby Siewert (shot and disc). “We are really strong in all of the jumping events be it long, triple or high jump with all of our performers returning and some newcomers who add depth and potential,” Kvebak said. “We will also be strong in our middle distance events with a lot of returning runners anchoring our 400-800 meter events.” Champa, Wiebolt, Kalberer, Clem and Hallisey
anchor the jumping group, while Fritz, Clem, Robert Johnson, Richard Bellefeuille and Labine all return with experience in the mid-distance events. The 1,600-3,200 runners will also be strong with Foltz and newcomer Matt Lundstrom. With the good experience the Lakers return, they still will need the young athletes step up to provide the valuable depth a team needs to succeed. “We have a lot of experience on this team with some openings for some of our young talent to fill some holes where we lost athletes to graduation,” Kvebak said. “We lost a staple in the hurdles with Austin Clem last year and look to fill those events with new runners. “We are also looking for someone to fill the shoes of Montana Johnson who was a huge factor in the 100 and 200 last year.” With the season well under way, the positivity is ringing
loud during Laker practices, which can only translate into a successful season. “We have had a wonderful start to our season with positive attitudes from our kids working to the best of their ability at every opportunity,” Kvebak said. “I can’t wait to start the competitive portion of our schedule.” The 2014 Detroit Lakes track and field schedule: March 28 at Concordia University Indoor Meet April 1 Detroit Lakes Invite 8 at Fergus Falls

Raider boys’ golf has big numbers again BY BRIAN WIERIMA

Big numbers and strong experience will be a couple of main ingredients for the improving Lake Park-Audubon boys’ golf team. All of last year’s starters return for the Raiders, which include seniors Dalton Kohler, Charley McDunn, juniors Sam Whitehead, Chase Wiedmann, Chris Donovan, Wyatt Monroe and sophomore Clay Anderson. Each of Kohler and Wiedmann qualified for the section meet last year, while just missing state berths. “Both young men just missed out on the trip to state by a few strokes, so I am expecting big things from these two this season,” said LP-A head boys’ golf coach Cole Wixo. “They had a taste of success and have worked hard in the off season to put themselves in contention for the state meet this year.” Whitehead will also be looked upon to provide low scores for the Raiders after a strong offseason where he traveled in the summer playing in the Minnesota Junior PGA circuit. “His swing has improved tremendously and has added power and distance to his game,” Wixo said. “Sam knows the game of golf inside and out and is a true student of the game. I will often see him practicing impractical situations and ask why he is practicing that shot. “Sam is always one of the first people to practice and the last ones to leave, I have no doubt that he will also be chasing all conference and section leaders this year.” McDunn is looked upon to have an

improved season, while Anderson also played in many Junior PGA events in the summer. “Clay has had a little bit of a growth spurt and has also added some distance to his game as well, which will be highly beneficial to lowering his scores,” Wixo said. “Our last spot will be up for grabs, but was a toss-up between Wyatt Monroe and Chris Donovan last year who were usually neck and neck during our weekly playoffs. “Varsity spots in golf are never a
guarantee, so we have a number of other golfers on the team who will be gunning for those spots as well.” With that experience returning, LP-A will be hoping to finish in the top three of the Pine to Prairie Conference. Top contenders in the conference include Mahnomen, Bagley, Fosston and Ada-Borup. “We will be golfing in all of our conference meets as well as a few invites hosted by Perham,” Wixo said. “We are really excited to get the opportuni-

LP-A girls’ golf to hold competitive edge BY BRIAN WIERIMA

There will be strong continuity on the Lake Park-Audubon girls’ golf team, as all players are back from the 2013 season. That includes 2012 state entrant Laynee Cole, who returns as one of the Raiders top golfers. “All these girls are strong and can drive the ball,” said LP-A head coach Marge Beaudine. “We’ll be working on our putting, though.” The Raiders finished in the middle of the pack in the conference, with senior Lindsey Olson qualifying for sections. Other returners include Bobbi Babbler, Alexis Carr and junior Shania Alder. “There will be a competition for the sixth spot,” Beaudine said. “We have experience now, so if they can play well together, they’ll do well.” The 2014 Lake Park-Audubon Girls Golf schedule: May 6 Fosston Fertile-Beltrami Ada-Borup/Norman Cty West Bagley

Numbers improve for Raider track teams LP-A boys and girls have higher goals for 2014 BY BRIAN WIERIMA

Numbers for the Lake ParkAudubon boys’ and girls’ track and field teams are at its highest levels in years, meaning better depth for the Raider squads. The LP-A boys have five seniors in Shane Toutges (long jump, sprints and relays), Tyler Molacek (relays, mid-distance), Isaiah Pearson (400, 4x800, 200, long jump), Mitch Zerr (100, 200, 400, shot put, relays) and Chance Kostreba (3,200, 4x800). The Raider girls will be led by four seniors in Breann Hogie (800, high jump, 4x800, 4x400), Bailee Bartunek (shot put, 100, 200, relays), Rebecca Schermer (800, 4x800, high jump, relays) and Ashlynn Strom (3,200). Junior Tory Haglund will also be an anchor in sprints, running the 100, 200 and 400 sprints. “The numbers are much better, but there are a lot of new faces, so it will be a work in progress,” said LP-A coach Coral Lunde. “The big thing is we will be able to fill out most of our events in meets.” Junior Taylor Briard also will be a main contributor in sprints, while also helping place relays. For the Raider girls, Hogie and Schermer will be hurdle contributors, with the long distance events being a strength with Ashlynn and Hannah Strom and sophomore Lilly Ness all strong runners.

Strong arms to pace Raider baseball BY BRIAN WIERIMA

Pitching will be a strength when the Lake Park-Audubon baseball team takes to the 2014 season. That pitching staff will be led by one of the strikeout kings of the area in senior Mason Swegarden, who has averaged over 10 K’s a game the last two years. “He is our cornerstone,” said first-year LP-A head coach Sean Degerstrom. “He will continue being a dominant strikeout pitcher for us, our stopper.” Degerstrom added Swegarden is adding a third pitch to his already devastating fastball-changeup combo. “We are developing his curveball, not necessarily for this level, but for his future in college,” Degerstrom said. Swegarden will be pitching for Mayville State next year, but adding a third pitch to his almost unhittable fastball and change-up menu, will make the Raider senior that much more dangerous. But the LP-A pitching rotation doesn’t end with Swegarden, with junior Tim Brekken and sophomore Lane Ulmer filling the No. 2 and 3 roles well. “Lane pitched a lot last summer and efficiently can throw three pitches,” Degerstrom
said. “Tim has two different styles of fastballs, one off speed and both can throw strikes.” After the top three pitchers, Degerstrom can go to his bullpen which will have up to five other hurlers at hand. “Total, we have eight pitchers, with our top three being the main workhorses,” Degerstrom said. With the pitching being in good hands, the gloves out in the field have been the question mark. That’s why the practices have been focused on improving the defense. “Defense has been LP-A’s Achilles Heel the last several seasons,” the Raider coach said. “We have pitchers who can strike batters out, but we need them to be confident enough to throw for contact, as well.” The Raiders gave up 50 unearned runs last year, which is more than the earned runs the LP-A pitchers allowed. Each of Swegarden (shortstop), Brekken (short and second base) and Ulmer (third and second base) will be the anchors in the infield when not pitching. That will leave some inexperienced players at the other positions, while the outfield will utility player senior Tom Vohnoutka and other speedy younger players patrolling.

“It will be a trial by fire thing for some of these players, we’ll have to throw them in there early,” Degerstrom said. Swegarden will be bumped down a little in the batting order, with Degerstrom using his .600 batting average as an RBI producer, as well. “He is a great leadoff hitter, but we may sneak him down in the order and hide him a little so he can bat some guys in instead of being stranded on the bases,” Degerstrom added. Each of Ulmer and Brekken were .300 hitters last year and will help stabilize the top of
the order. Some other younger batters who can make an impact include sophomore Reese Mattson, freshman Mitchell Hall and a host of others who will be looked upon to reach base. “We’ll play a lot of small ball to produce runs and be very aggressive on the pads,” Degerstrom included. “We’ll have to take the extra base when we can.”

Strikes, or more importantly throwing them, will be the biggest key for the Lake ParkAudubon softball team this season. With the departure of their top pitcher last year in Maegan Anderson, the Raiders have a void to fill on the mound. “Our key is simple, we have some young pitchers coming up and their job will be to throw strikes, because we will have a pretty good defense behind them,” said LP-A head coach Bryan Anderson. LP-A returns seven of their nine starters from last year’s team, which played to the final four of the section playoffs and all are juniors. Four of them have started on varsity since seventh grade and three since eighth grade. So, in essence, the Raiders maybe younger, but they have plenty of seasoning behind them. “We’ll need to throw strikes and not give away bases,” Anderson said. The Raiders had a good transition ready to go in the pitching department with Jesse Swegarden to take over. But an injury to her hip
has wiped out the season for Swegarden, with 2013 junior varsity pitchers sophomores Sierra Omvig and Paige Hovelson set to form the rotation. “They are not overpowering, but both can move the ball around and hit the corners,” Anderson said. “They should be a pretty good tandem.” The Raider defense will be fast, with All-Conference shortstop junior Cheyanne Nelson returning, along with freshman Aubrey Somerville at catcher and junior third baseman Laina Nelson returning. The outfield will be solid with the return of junior Megan Hilfer in left, junior Kayla Olson in right and sophomore Carlie Raaen potentially in center. “If we could find a shortstop to replace Nelson, I would love to put her out in centerfield, where it would be a natural fit for her speed,” Anderson said. With 30 players out for softball, depth is also becoming a strength. Speed will also key the offense, with manufacturing runs being the norm. “We have a lot of good averages and it’s going to be our

speed which creates runs for us,” Anderson said. The Raiders will be looking to finish in the top of the conference, while hopefully making another deep run into the Section 6-1A playoffs.
