The dog days of summer get a little “crazy” come August, as the 800 and 900 blocks of Washington Avenue in downtown Detroit Lakes are shut down for Crazy Daze. The much-anticipated event is set for Thursday, Aug. 9 this year. Dozens of retailers from around Detroit Lakes will be dragging inventory out onto the streets, as they dramatically slash prices, predominantly on summer items. Shoppers can expect to see prices at Crazy Daze drop anywhere from 30 to 90 percent, as businesses make room for their fall inventory. The early birds tend to get the worms, though, as the mad rush for the hot deals begins at 7 a.m. and goes to 7 p.m. Bargain shopping is the big goal here, but Crazy Daze also features fun food vendors and music to add to the festive, family-friendly atmosphere. Some businesses even do special promotions and games throughout the day.

It’s unknown how many burgers and brats Habitat for Humanity volunteers grill up every summer, but for those looking for a traditional-style picnic in the park, this could be the place. Every Tuesday night at the Detroit Lakes City Park, live music takes the stage at the park’s bandshell. The event is free, open to the public and draws out some big crowds. But crowds, they like to be fed, and that’s where the Habitat for Humanity comes in. Prior to the 7 p.m. music, volunteers with the organization are busy grilling up quarter-pound hamburgers, brats and hot dogs right there on the spot, serving them up hot and fresh, while dishing up a couple of salads and handing out beverages. The picnic is a freewill donation, with any proceeds being kept for Habitat for Humanity projects around the area.

Ready to get Looney? Head to Vergas for a fun festival

NOVEMBER 28 PARADE OF LIGHTS Community members gather in downtown Detroit Lakes, as Washington Avenue is shut down to make room for a parade of lights. Area businesses and orga-

nizations create floats, and the big man himself (Santa) makes an appearance as people sip hot chocolate and kick off the beginning of the holiday season.

DECEMBER DECEMBER 3 WILDLIFE TRACKING HIKE Exploring the North Country Trail in early winter begins at 1 p.m. and goes to 3 p.m. Meet at the North Country Trail Head at the South Entrance of Itasca State Park.

In August, Vergas is all about lovin’ the loons, lovin’ the life, as the annual Vergas Looney Daze gets underway. With a tagline of “Welcome to the Looney Bin, this year the five-day festival gets underway Wednesday, Aug. 10 and wraps up the following Monday. Craft and food vendors will be out in true street fair fashion, as a 5-K run takes off on Aug. 13. The weekend is packed with everything from the Miss Vergas and Princess Altona pageant to flea markets to area-wide rummage sales and a fishing derby. But what would Looney Daze be without a water fight, a strongman contest and a loon-calling contest? The annual Looney Daze parade will be wrapping through the quaint little town on Sunday, Aug. 14 at 2 p.m. There are far too many fun and kooky events to list that make this one of area’s favorite summertime festivals, so ahead, get looney - you know you want to. 12 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2016

CUTTIN’ A RUG WITH

FIREFIGHTERS DL FIRE DEPARTMENT TO HOLD A DANCE FOR THE PUBLIC

T

he annual Firefighter’s Dance will once again be held at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion on August 12. The Firefighter’s Dance has been held at the Pavilion since 1915 as a thank you gift to the community and as a minor fundraising event. “We don’t make a ton of money from it, it’s really just to give back to donors,” said Jason Talbert, a local firefighter. Earlier this year, Talbert and his fellow firefighters sent out 14,000 mailouts to community members, asking for donations to be given directly to volunteer 14 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2016

firefighters for their service. Detroit Lakes Police Chief and musician Tim Eggebraaten will provide live music, and there will be a cash bar open to attendees. Almost all of the local volunteer firefighters will be there to answer questions about their work. A five dollar donation will be collected at the door, with all proceeds going directly to the all-volunteer fire department. In Detroit Lakes, the crew is staffed entirely by volunteers who are willing to risk life and limb to help in times of crisis in the community. Whenever there

is a fire, no matter if it is late at night or if temperatures are way below zero, volunteer firefighters are always on the scene to help in the rescue effort. The DLFD also has in its possession the Jaws of Life, a tool used to extract people stuck inside of crashed vehicles. So, in addition to putting out fires, a team of firefighters will be at every major car crash in the area. Firefighters train every Wednesday night to ensure they are doing their job correctly. There are currently 27 firefighters on staff in Detroit Lakes. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

TAMARAC AWAITS

AUGUST IS A BUSY, BUSY MONTH AT THE WILDLIFE REFUGE TAMARAC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE August is the month to prepare for the cold months ahead. Spend some time in nature to rejuvenate your spirit before the frigid temperatures arrive. Experience some vibrant early foliate color with native sumacs and observe the beauty of late summer flowers including yarrow, goldenrod, hoary alyssum and woodland sunflower. Sample some late summer cuisine with raspberries, gooseberries, elderberries, pin cherries and chokecherries that can all 18 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2016

be found and picked south of Cty Hwy 26 in the visitor area. See you on the refuge where the blacktop ends and the backwoods begin! WILDLIFE WATCHING Here at Tamarac, wildlife is left undisturbed as they care for their young. Portions of the refuge are closed to the public during this crucial time, but many viewing opportunities still exist. The most optimum times for viewing wildlife occur around sunrise and sunset. But sometimes even an afternoon visit can

be rewarding to the quiet, watchful observer. To increase your chances of seeing wildlife, take a drive on the Blackbird Wildlife Drive. This five mile drive follows the edges of lakes, marshes and meadows. If you feel inclined to exercise, hike the 2 mile long Old Indian Hiking Trail and experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. Another option is to venture out on the North Country Trail which traverses 14 miles through the southern half of the refuge. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

GREBES AT TAMARAC ARE 5-TIMES COOLER THAN YOU THINK Tamarac Refuge is a place to find rare species and great diversity. It lies within a transition zone where western tallgrass prairie, eastern deciduous hardwoods, and northern coniferous forests meet. This brings together species from those different habitats. An account of this diversity is our five species of grebes that are on the refuge at least part of the year, the piedbilled, red-necked, western, eared, and horned grebes. Grebes are ducklike waterbirds that live in lakes, ponds and rivers. They are great swimmers and divers, but awkward on land. The feet of grebes are lobed unlike the webbed feet typical of most waterbirds. The same traits that make them good at swimming, such as a heavier body and feet placed close to their tail, make them less suited for other movement. Grebes eat their own feathers, which appears to help them throw up uneatable prey parts as pellets. Look for two of the five grebe species on the refuge this summer. Anticipate large flocks of grebes at Tamarac Refuge towards fall and search for rare grebes at the edge of their range. The pied-billed and red-necked grebes raise their young at 22 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2016

Tamarac Refuge throughout the summer. They build nests upon floating vegetation. They have one or two young that climb on the backs of their parents soon after hatching. The parents feed their babies for up to two weeks by diving for their food. Popular items on the menu may include fish, insects, crustaceans, and amphibians. Boaters that see grebes should keep their distance to avoid flushing the birds, leaving the babies vulnerable to predators. Grebe populations can be effected by pollution, fishing line entanglement, and changes in water quality. Tamarac Refuge is nearly 43,000 acres offering habitat for grebes on twenty-eight lakes, three rivers, and several hundred wetlands. The Tamarac Wetland Management District extends these habitats to five counties north of the refuge. Tamarac staff work with private landowners to re-establish wetlands, hundreds have been restored and protected over the past few years. Be a part of our progress by conserving diverse habitats on your property.

ROLLAG’S STEAM THRESHERS REUNION IS STEP BACK IN TIME

{

{

Reporter’s note: I once knew a little boy named Jake around the age of 5 or 6 who just adored Rollag. He would often wake up in the morning and ask his parents enthusiastically if that day was finally the day they got to traverse to the weekend-long celebration of steam engines and fond remembrance of the turn of the century lifestyle. Now, whenever this little guy is insistent on staying in bed, his parents have been known to say “Jake, today is Rollag! You’ve got to get up!” regardless of whether or not Rollag is going on. I’m sure Jake has caught on to his parents’ scheme by now, but rest assured, he will be a lifelong fan of Rollag.

T

his Labor Day weekend, take a leap back in time at the 62nd annual Western Minnesota Steam Thresher’s Reunion, fondly known as “Rollag”. See everything from steam powered farming equipment to reenactments of daily life back in the day. It all began when a local family decided to start up their old steam engine tractor in 1940 during a bout of nostalgia. They made it an annual fami24 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2016

ly tradition and began inviting friends and neighbors to join in. The Western Minnesota Steam Thresher’s Reunion, as the event was formally named in 1954, has continued every year since and has amassed a loyal following of steam power enthusiasts. Rollag has grown to a designated sprawling space of 210 acres, complete with public camping areas, a main street lined with old timey buildings, and the

353 train, which carries passengers in a 2-mile loop around the showgrounds. There is also lots of delicious grub to be found across the grounds, prepared by various church groups, ranging from fry bread to homemade farmer’s breakfast and all the ice cream a person could want. The hallmark of Rollag happens to be the various types of machinery that are on display. From steam-powered DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Blacksmiths may be a dying breed, but at Rollag they fit right in to the scenery, as volunteers with different skills set up displays that are often interactive for visitors. The entire weekend-long event is put on by volunteers who come back year after year to help. tractors to old school saw mills, there’s sure to be something fascinating for any attendee. On top of the normal, vast array of machinery that Rollag shows, there’s going to be a little something extra for the 62nd reunion. This year, WMSTR is hosting the Great Minneapolis Line Expo following the theme “From Steam to Modern Machine.” The expo will include all of the companies that went on to become the DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Minneapolis Moline Power Implement Company, one of the largest machinery manufacturers in the Midwest. WMSTR has the largest display of Multi-Task Machining steam engines of any show and this year there will be around 20 MTM steam engines at the expo. Out for viewing will be the oldest operating engine, the last MTM engine built, the only operating tandem compound return flue engine, a double cylinder engine that was one of the original double smoke-

stack engines, the largest engine MTM built and many more pieces of incredible machinery. In addition, there will be a fine display of Twin City gas tractors, Minneapolis Moline tractors, a 14 HP return flue engine, a Victory threshing machine and other fine displays. Besides the mechanical aspect of WMSTR, there’s also a cultural side to Rollag, reminiscent of the pioneer days. There is an old log cabin where women SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2016 | 25

in pioneer dress complete household tasks such as spinning yarn, a blacksmith’s shop and foundry, and a farmstead where attendees of all ages can see what it was like running a farm before the age of modern machinery. And what celebration would be complete without music? From accordions, to banjos, fiddles, harmonicas and maybe the spoons, Rollag has a variety of music to be enjoyed that can be heard daily across the showgrounds from the Nelson building to the TMB, gazebo, churches and sometimes just under a shady tree. There will be formally arranged music playing in the Nelson building, along with impromptu jamming around many other locations. In the evening, you can still find music in the Nelson building, as well as the TMB. It will be a grand old time on Steamer Hill, the place ‘Where the Sun Always Shines in Your Heart!’. For more information on Rollag and the annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion, visit www.rollag.com.

Rollag is one of the most popular places to go in the lakes area over Labor Day weekend, as thousands pour through the gates to get a glimpse of the early days. Steam engines, above, are the name of the game at Rollag, as the Steam Threshers Reunion is known to be a ‘rolling museum’ full of various displays that still function in an old-fashioned way.
