All-Big ten trio of Medalists at Pine to Palm BY ROBERT WILLIAMS rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

The 2015 runner-up Charlie Duensing and Peter Jones, both University of Minnesota golfers, caught first round leader Benjamin Skogen for a three-way tie for medalist honors with eight-under finishes at the 84th Pine to Palm golf tournament in Detroit Lakes Wednesday. Skogen entered the second day of qualifying with a two-stroke advantage after a bogey-free six-under 65. The Badger senior shot 69 on day two to set the bar at 134. “I think today was more steady; yesterday the momentum shift was on hole no. 7 where I made a 20-footer and birdied eight, nine and 10,” said Skogen. “Today, honestly, I only had one bogey. I kept it in play and pretty much hit it to 15-25 feet and two putted a lot.” In Skogen’s group was Jones, who was two strokes back after an opening round 67. He matched that effort Wednesday with another 67. Jones began his round with a birdie before a 90-minute weather delay. He came back with a bogey on two, but answered with a par three birdie on the tough third hole. “That was a good momentum shift there; get back in the mindset of making good decisions and just good shots as well,” said Jones.

Inclement weather hit as the final championship groups were just getting started and did not allow for much warm-up time before having to wait out the break. “The delay was a little tough, but playing college golf you get kind of used to it,” Duensing said. “It wasn’t anything too huge.” Duensing carded an opening round 68 and a 66, which was the second lowest round of the day and with teammate Jones, the duo keep the medalist honor in Gopher hands following up back-toback wins by Grady Meyer in 2014 and 2015, who played in Duensing’s group. The focus, at least for everyone in the field, was Skogen after his hot start. “We had the Badger up there that we had to go chase today,” said Duensing. “We got it done.” “Overall, I’ve just been playing smart golf, haven’t made any big numbers,” Jones said. “Try to make smart decisions and make as many birdies as I can.” The three medalists and six other college golfers are all staying nearby in a house together, so the competition is very friendly. “We’re really good friends. We play a bunch of games and it’s a lot of fun,“ said Duensing. “It’s been a blast. We’ve just been hanging out at night. I got to know a lot

of the Gopher guys from tournaments in the Big Ten,” said Skogen. The focus now turns to match play in the quest for the final pairing on championship Sunday. “It’s going to be a long week,” Duensing said. “You’re probably not going to have your best stuff the entire week so you have to get a little lucky and go out and have some fun.” “It’s cool to be medalist, but I think we’re all here to try to win the match play portion,” said Skogen. “That’s the whole goal.” Both Skogen and Duensing were close to wins in 2015 with Duensing losing the final to Alex Kline, while Skogen was the runner-up in qualifying to Meyer. Jones withdrew from the tournament last summer. “I’m excited because I haven’t played a match play tournament in a while,” he said. “Honestly, just have to be a bit more aggressive. You don’t have the ability to play the golf course, you’re playing the other guy. You’ve got to make as many birdies as you can...try to make those decisions off the tee to make sure you have a shot into the green and are not in the trees.” For Skogen, the Detroit Country Club has a nostalgic feel that could work to his advantage. “I played good last year,” he said. “The course is a lot like the course I

grew up on; it’s really short and focuses a lot on wedges and that’s one of my strengths. I feel like it really suits my eye.” The first round leader set his sites on the pin at hole no. 13 sinking a 35-foot putt, which was the one of the only long attempts he had. “Other than that, I was pretty steady all week,” he said. “I didn’t really make mistakes.” Dan Johnson had the round of the day matching Skogen’s low for the tournament with a 65 that propelled Johnson to a shot back of the leaders at 135. Bemidji State’s Will Czeh continued his consistent play following up an opening day 67 with 68 to share fourth place with Johnson. Gopher Justin Doeden was in sole possession of sixth place with a 136, in front of a four golfers at 138, Riley Johnson, Jordan Hahn, Brandon Sletmoen and Chris Swenson. Two-time defending medalist Meyer shot 68-72 for 140 and is in solid position for match play competition. Championship match play is scheduled to begin around the noon hour Thursday after a morning playoff of a slough of golfers tied at the cut of 148 14 golfers are vying for six spots in the field of 64.

Wisconsin’s Skogen leads after first round of Pine to Palm BY ROBERT WILLIAMS rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

DETROIT LAKES — Benjamin Skogen, a University of Wisconsin senior, shot a six-under 65 to take sole possession of first place after day one of championship qualifying at the 84th Pine to Palm golf tournament at Detroit Country Club Tuesday. The Big Ten Conference is well-represented in the top five scores on the leaderboard with only WIll Czeh of Bemidji State breaking up the list in second place tied with University of Minnesota’s Justin Doeden, two shots back at 67. Three shots back at 68 is a four-way tie which includes Gophers Grady Meyer and Charlie Duensing. Meyer is the two-time defending medalist; Duensing was the 2015 championship runner-up. Skogen was also the runner-up by two strokes to Meyer’s medalist run in last year’s qualifying. Wisconsin’s Jordan Hahn also carded a 68, along with Dickinson’s Joey Wagner. A logjam of nine golfers sit four strokes off the lead with two-under 69. Skogen played a bogey-free round with four birdies on the front nine and two on the backside. Three of his birdies came on par three holes, the other three on par fours. Doeden had the low back nine of the top three with a three-under 32, birdies on the par4 11th, par-5 12th, par-3 14th, and a birdie three on hole 16 to counter a lone backside bogey at 15.

Czeh blistered the final five holes of his front nine after a bogey four at the third hole. He went out after an eagle at the par-5 fifth hole, and four consecutive birdies on three par fours and the par-3 eighth. Other area golfers in the hunt are Blake Kahlbaugh and Aaron Smith of Mahnomen with 70. Former Lakers Ben Mallow, and Tanner Lane, along with Frazee’s Beau Hanson and Waubun’s Hunter Clark all coming in at even par 71. Former Laker girls Natalie Roth (NDSU) and Kate Smith (Nebraska) both finished in the top 50 with one-over 72s. In Mid-Am, Moorhead’s Jim Mikkelson and JT Johnson of St. Paul finished atop the leaderboard with matching two-round scores of 142. AJ Greff of San Tan Valley, Ariz., shot 72 to take the top spot in the Senior division, a stroke better than Fargo’s Tim Rubis and Omaha’s Joe Doughty. In Super Seniors, Lake Park’s Bob Jamison and St. Louis’ Thomas Wood shot 73 (+2) to finish a stroke in front of locals Steve Sundby and Paul Krueger. Chuck Renner, winner of the last five Super Senior titles, shot 77 to tie with West Fargo’s Michael Howell in fifth place. The top 16 advance to match play in Mid-Am, Seniors and Super Seniors. The top 64 advance to championship match play after the completion of qualifying Wednesday. For full tournament results visit detroitcountryclub.com.

More than 500 golfers will be descending upon Detroit Country Club this week for the playing of the 84th Pine to Palm golf tournament. The field of 512 golfers is the largest in two decades. Play got underway Monday with early birds Aaron Tait and T.J. Buboltz on the first tee at 6:45 a.m. Golfers with morning tee times were the benefactors of calm, scoring conditions be-

fore gusts of 20 mph winds picked up around the noon hour. Monday’s rounds are qualifiers for Mid-Ams, Seniors and Super Seniors, along with flight play. Championship qualifying begins Tuesday. George Theisen of Monticello had the shot of the morning rounds Monday with a hole-in-one on the par-3, 14th hole using a six iron. Theisen is golfing in the Senior divi-

1st Annual Lakeview Junior Classic Lakeview Golf Course • August 8-9, 2016 We survived! The 47th Annual Ironman Classic ended last August with little fanfare but loyal support- a junior tournament that taught young boys and girls the skills of competing at golf. Dad might be playing over at the Pine to Palm tournament, and this event was a nice two day tournament in which to enter your kids. Ford and Pat Hermanson created the event while Kris and Margery Smith ran it for the last 17 years. Kris and Margery are at Lakeview now after selling Ironman in the summer of 2015. They brought the tournament over to the par 64 golf course, Lakeview, across from Pine to Palm. It was an easy transition- the tourney moved to Monday and Tuesday; but besides that it›s a familiar setting, and the golf course fits the juniors well.

BOYS 10-12 1ST FLIGHT 1st. Luke Tobkin, 2nd Jack Syltie, 3rd Hunter Hanson

BOYS 10-12 CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT 1st. Jack Randall, 2nd Charlie Solberg, 3rd Joey Simonich

BOYS 8 & 9 1st. Tommy Suckert, 2nd. Lawsen Justesen, 3rd Brock Burnhans

BOYS 13-16 1st Ian Simonich, 2nd Hunter Burnside, 3rd Gehrig Geiss

Thirty-three players participated in the four age divisions. In the 8-9 year old boys division, Tommy Suckert, Detroit Lakes, shot consistent rounds of 44-46 to win by seven shots over Lawsen Justesen of Detroit Lakes, with Brock Burhans, Detroit Lakes, coming in third. In the 10-12 year old boys division, First Flight, Nick Tobkin, Detroit Lakes, shot a nice 87 to finish first in the First flight. Jack Syltie, Detroit Lakes, came in second while Hunter Hanson, Detroit Lakes, came in third. In the Championship Flight, 10-12 year old division, first day medalist Jack Randall, Lawrence Kan., continued his good play and won shooting 34-84. Charlie Solberg from Fargo came in second and Joey Simonich, Moorhead, came in third. Hanna Knoop, Detroit Lakes, playing in her first golf tournament won the 8-10 year old girls division. Rose Solberg, Fargo, came in second, and Tatum Gatheridge, also of Detroit Lakes, came in third. Coming off winning the Junior Club Championship this past weekend, McKenna Mallow, Pelican Rapids, won the 11-15 year old girls Championship Flight. Lakeview Golf Course is a wonderful facility to host a junior event. The course is challenging with it‘s hilly terrain and the nine different par 3‘s. It is short enough to create some birdie opportunities, but plenty of trees catch errant drives. Thanks to this year‘s participants! We look forward to seeing you next year!

Three-time champion Jack Rule guest at 2016 Pine to Palm BY ROBERT WILLIAMS rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

Three-time Pine to Palm champion Jack Rule will return to Detroit Lakes and this year’s tournament as a special guest of Detroit Country Club. Rule was a three-time winner from 1958-1960 and was the first golfer to win three consecutive championships. He was the medalist in his first title year in 1958 with a score of 132. Dayton Olsen defeated Rule in the 1961 championship match negating a four-peat. “Frankly, I was a little overconfident,” Rule said. “Dayton played well and took me out.” In the late 50’s, the Pine to Palm was a marquee stop on the amateur golf circuit. “It was certainly one of the highlights of my amateur golf career and at the time, this was the biggest calcutta tourney in the country,” said Rule. “It was really exciting because the guys who were bidding in the auctions, they all brought in their best from all over the country. It drew from every part of the country. The competition was really unique.” One of Rule’s biggest amateur matches came before his Pine to Palm run at the 1956 International Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament at Edgewood Golf Course in Fargo versus Jack Nicklaus. Rule, then 17-years-old, took on 16-year-old Nicklaus in an 18-hole playoff just weeks after Rule defeated Nicklaus at the U.S. Junior Amateur in Williamstown, Pa. The Waterloo, Iowa native defeated Nicklaus by two strokes at Edgewood. Rule still holds his professional card but plays golf on the weekends as weekdays are busy with duties as the Chief Executive Officer of incentaHealth in Denver, Colo., a company he co-founded. “Golf, to me, has always been my avocation,” said Rule. “I play on the weekends because I’m still a working stiff.” incentaHealth came out of a brainstorm of listing the problems in the country in 2002. After prioritizing, Rule and a partner went down the list to see what, if anything, they could do. “It’s a pretty exciting company,” said Rule. “We’re battling obesity. In my mind, and in the minds of others, if we don’t solve this one, our healthcare costs are going to spiral out of control.” Now in its 14th year of existence, the company takes a unique approach to battling obesity.

Three-time champion Jack Rule played a Super Seniors round as guest of the Detroit Country Club Tuesday afternoon with playing partners Dick McConn, Joe Sauer and Bill Hawkins. “We have a program in Colorado called Weigh and Win,” Rule said. Along with partner Kaiser Permanente, a health insurance agency, residents of Colorado are paid to lose weight. It’s a free program to residents 18 or older with 91 kiosks around the state. There are 77,000 people in the program who have combined to

lose a total of 250,000 pounds. The program sees at least 40 new applicants per day and has been growing steadily since its beginnings 14 years ago. “Back then, nobody was offering incentives and obesity didn’t have the focus it has today,” Rule said.” The company uses technology and private photos during

weigh-ins so customers can actually see the weight coming off. “It turned out to be a tremendous retention tool,” said Rule. “Their appearance improves each time they weigh in. People can actually see themselves morphing. Our whole concept is healthy eating and active living, not a diet - smaller portions of the right

foods. We coach each individual with a customized program and deliver it to them on a daily basis - two minutes a day.” Rule has numerous tales about his golf career that are tangential to his work in the field of health and wellness and one from the Pine to Palm that is not without a bit of irony. In 1961, Rule squared off against Martin Stanovich of Niles, Ill. in the semifinals. Stanovich, oddly enough, was known by the moniker the Fat Man. “In those days, guys played for thousands of dollars per nine,” said Rule. “Today there isn’t that kind of betting.” The Chicago Fat Man also had one of the biggest gambling reputations in the country. “On the first tee, the Fat Man said to me, ‘How about us making this interesting? Let’s play a little side bet for $100.’ I didn’t have a $100 but was not going to let him intimidate me. Not sure what would have happened if I lost.” Rule defeated Stanovich 1-up for 100 bucks. The win was Rule’s 18th of a string of 19 consecutive wins at Detroit Country Club from 1958 to the 1961 championship match. While Rule has not been back to Detroit Lakes since the early 60’s, he did keep in touch with a big, local name in Detroit Lakes, and at the Pine to Palm, Zorbaz founder Tom Hanson. “Tommy Hanson was a good friend of mine,” Rule said. “Where I got to know him was in Palm Springs. We used to have a lot of fun together.” Hanson, who passed away just prior to the 2015 Pine to Palm, met Dick McConn of Detroit Lakes and Rule at the U. S. Air Force Academy where McConn was honored for his contributions and commitment to the Academy at the opening of the new practice facility at the Eisenhower Golf Course on campus at the USAFA. “Tommy came down and was part of that evening,” said Rule. Rule will be a special part of the 2016 Pine to Palm playing a non-qualifying round with a group of Super Seniors. Joining Rule in their qualifying rounds will be McConn, Joe Sauer and Bill Hawkins. “Dick (McConn) has been trying to get me back up to DL for several years,” said Rule. Tournament aficionados and fans witnessed a bit of history at this year’s tournament when the foursome teed off Tuesday August 9, at 2:14 p.m from hole No. 1.

Smith makes good on first time in Resorters Five-time state champ adds women’s title to her trophy case BY ERIC MORKEN Forum News Service

Detroit Lakes’ Kate Smith says she had no expectations entering her first Resorters golf tournament in Alexandria, but others in the field likely knew it could turn out exactly as it did. Smith, a five-time Minnesota State High School League Class AA state champion, won the Women’s Division title on Saturday afternoon after qualifying as the second seed in the field with a 75 earlier in the week. “It was really fun,” Smith said. “It was a good week. I didn’t think I’d even make it to Saturday. I wasn’t expecting much going into it, but I had a lot of fun. Ending like that was a great way to finish.” It took all 18 holes, but she got the job done against Glenwood’s Jenna Janu. The 1-up win for Smith made for a tough ending for Janu as she finished second in the women’s field for the third straight summer. Janu led by two holes after four before Smith answered back with a par win on No. 5 and an eagle win on the par-five sixth hole. At the turn, Janu had made it a 1-up advantage again after birdying the seventh. “I don’t play well on the start of this course, but I love the back side,” Smith said. “I knew if I could make it through the front OK that I could make it up on the back. They have more scoreable holes for me on the back, just holes that are set up better, so I was excited to make the turn and see where I could go.”

It played out how Smith envisioned. She evened things back up with a birdie win on 11 before a par on the par-five 14th gave her a first lead of the day. Then at 16, she used another par to take what proved to be the decisive hole for a 2-up cushion. Janu answered by sticking her tee shot on the par- three 17th within about five-feet for a birdie win. But on 18, both players parred to send Smith home a winner. “I expected it was going to be pretty close,” Smith said. “The way she’s been playing all week and all summer, she’s been playing really well. I played with her twice now before this match. In qualifying, she played really well. She had it three under through the first seven holes or so. She knows this golf course and she plays it really well, so I knew it was going to be hard to beat her.” Smith found a way despite feeling like she wasn’t at her best for much of the round. “I didn’t hit a lot of fairways, which is unlike me and then a lot of putts weren’t dropping,” she said. “I scrambled really well as far as my chipping and my long irons were good. Jenna didn’t make very many mistakes on the front. It was kind of hard to battle that, but on the back she was a little wayward with her driver, and I capitalized on some of those holes.” It was just enough to come away with a Resorters title before heading to the Big Ten and the University of Nebraska this fall.

Like the championship division, the Seniors came down to three men atop the leaderboard in San Tan Valley, Arizona’s AJ Greff, Bloomington’s Marc Redman and the low local golfer Dan Drenth of Detroit Lakes all earning co-medalist honors with one-over rounds of 72. The trio and remainder of the field will do battle with 2015 champion Keith Aasen, who played exempt. Of the three, Redman is the lone returning player from last year. He placed fifth in qualifying in 2015 with a 74 and advanced all the way to the final before losing to Aasen 3&1. Redman got past Scott Linnerooth in the opening round. Linnerooth, the 2012 medalist and champion in 2012 and 2014, returns to match play after qualifying with a 76. Joe Doughty of Omaha, Neb., shot a 73 for sole possession of second place in qualifying, followed by John Berg of Detroit Lakes with a 74. Fargo’s Mark Ferrell and TL Solien of Madison, Wis., tied with matching 75s, a stroke better than Linnerooth. Linnerooth finished tied at 76 in a logjam with Mark Doyle of Fargo , Chuck Wiger of Moorhead, last year’s medalist Dan Elton, James Remer of Circle Pines, Robert Schultz of Winona, and Russ Newman of Fargo. The final spot is to be determined
