Of all the stocks, bonds and commodities that are bought, sold and traded, not a single one can eclipse the value of an education. It is the single greatest ingredient to success. Understanding this, L.A. Amundson, owner of First Security Banks, established his scholarship program in 1993 with a $5 million endowment. As of 2018, the L.A. Amundson Scholarship has awarded 4,960 scholarships in the amount of $5,824,000. *Parents must maintain primary checking account at FSB for student to be eligible.

SENIOR STANDOUT NOAH OLDS Wrestling
This team captain believes wrestling has made him a better person. With his coaches, his teammates, and his own inner voice all pushing him to work hard and do his best, Noah Olds says his time in wrestling has allowed him to learn and grow, not only as an athlete but as a whole individual. “I think it’s a good sport,” he says. “I think it really challenges you. I think it helps make you a better person, makes your work ethic better.” Originally signed up for the sport by his parents over a decade ago, Noah always enjoyed wrestling enough to stick with it. He’s proven his talents and abilities as a wrestler and role model over the years, and today, he continues to impress his peers and coaches — on and off the mat. Noah is known for being a team leader who sets high expectations for himself and then works hard to achieve his goals, all while wearing an infectious smile that rubs off on his teammates and adds an air of positivity to practices.
As a senior member of the team, Noah strives to be like the varsity wrestlers he used to look up to when he was younger: “They were working so hard, and I would think, ‘Man, I want to be like that,’” he says. And today, he is like that. He attributes his strong work ethic to his upbringing, and says it’s ingrained in him. “My dad always wants me to work hard,” he says. “ I try to do my best in working as hard as I can. I try and hold high expectations for myself, in just trying to be the best person I can be.” Noah is hoping to qualify for the state wrestling tournament this year, but his main goal is to just keep working hard at it, no matter what happens. For him, the work is its own reward — as, of course, are the victories on the mat. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun,” he says. “The reward of winning a match is just a great reward.” After graduation, Noah plans to go to college to study business and entrepreneurship, following in the footsteps of his father. He might like to continue wrestling in college, but as of early winter he hadn’t finalized any plans yet to do so.
He is a great role model and team leader. He is hardworking, dedicated and committed to putting forth a great effort. He is very intense in practice and expects more out of himself than he does in others. I think if you looked up the word ‘grit’ in the dictionary, there would be a picture of Noah Olds on the page.
Age: 18 Parents’ names: Scott Olds and Heather Rotar Role/position on the team: Captain How long he’s been in wrestling: Since about 2007 Other sports/activities he’s involved in: Football

SENIOR STANDOUT ELLE SEABERG Dance
This two-year captain is known for her positive leadership, on and off the dance floor. Elle Seaberg has been a member of the Laker Dance Team for five years, but her training as a dancer started back in preschool, when her parents signed her up for Just For Kix. She describes herself as a passionate dancer and helpful team leader. “I want to help other people get better so our dance team as a whole can get better,” she says. As a team captain, Elle takes the time to review things with dancers who need or want a little extra help, and she believes it’s important to keep a smile on her face and stay positive. “Attitude plays a big role,” she says. “If one person starts to be negative in how they dance, other people will start to say they did really bad, too, and that just sort of deteriorates the team feeling.” The team aspect of dance is what Elle enjoys most. Being in dance has taught her how to work as part of a group, she says, and as a captain she’s learned how to help her teammates work together. “Everyone has to do the exact same thing at the exact same time,” she
explains, “so you have to learn to work well with others.” Elle’s goal for this dance season is to really focus on the team’s timing, with the ultimate hope of making it to the state tournament. Getting there will take “lots of hard work,” she says — but that’s a prospect she’s not afraid of. When Elle’s not dancing, she’s studying, playing soccer, meeting with the various clubs she’s a part of, or partaking in one of her favorite activities, volunteering. An active Lakes Area Young Life volunteer, she’s a leader for the organization’s middle school youth ministry program, WyldLife, and also spent this past summer at Young Life’s Castaway camp in Pelican Rapids. “It was really fun,” she says of volunteering at the camp. “I was there with other kids from all around the country. It’s really fun to see these different kinds of people from all over living in a community. And...even when they’re doing hard work, everyone seems to be happy all the time. It’s volunteer, so the people are excited to be there.” After graduation, Elle thinks she’ll either go straight on to college, or take a year off to do a missions trip before taking that next step. Whatever happens, she’ll keep on dancing — but she’ll miss being part of a team.
She’s super positive and is always offering to help the people around her! ...She’s an all-around great and caring person who works hard and always has a smile on her face.
“Dance is fun,” she says. “I have had a lot of fun doing it, for a long time. It’ll be sad to be done with it.”
Age: 18 Parents’ names: Jon and Heather Seaberg Role/position on the team: Captain How long she’s been involved in a dance program: Since preschool, starting with Just For Kix Other sports/activities she’s involved in: Soccer, Rotary Interact Club, Link Crew, National Honor Society and Lakes Area Young Life

SENIOR STANDOUT TREY SEEBOLD Boys Hockey
This two-year team captain has never known a winter without hockey. Trey Seebold is one of five kids in his family, and they’ve all played the sport since toddlerhood. “I started at a young age and have played almost all my life,” he says. “It’s a big part of me.” Over the years, Trey has grown into a hardworking hockey player known for having good vision on the ice and passing the puck well. “I can find the open guy,” he explains. He’s honed his skills through a lot of year-round practice. He’s on the ice with his team all winter, and in the gym every day all summer. He’s self-motivated, and puts in extra effort without being told. He works on his puck shooting skills and stickhandling at home, no matter the season. “I work pretty hard in the off season,” he says. That’s an effort that hasn’t gone unnoticed by his coaches and peers, and it’s paid off in terms of his own
personal growth and accomplishments as a hockey player. Trey’s been a varsity player since his freshman year, and last year was picked for the All-Section 8A hockey team. He was also All-Conference in the Mid-State. This year, he hopes to help get his Detroit Lakes team to the state tournament — a goal that he says will take everyone on the team “working as one and working as hard as they can out there.” To help make that happen, Trey tries to lead by example and give his teammates any extra help or encouragement they might need to play their best. Off the ice, he’s an active fundraiser and advocate for local hockey. He recently helped set the stage for a fundraising concert at Detroit Mountain, for example, and at the start of the season he helps give out gear to new players and get them signed up to play. He also skates with the Detroit Lakes Youth Hockey Association’s “Mites” once a month, assisting the young beginners with their drills. “It’s really fun because they really look up to us,” he says of the Mites. “It’s a good experience.”
Trey is a tough, hard-working player that puts the team above himself and leads by example. He is willing to do whatever will help the team win. Trey works hard in the off season to improve every year. Off the ice, Trey is a leader in school and around the rink, putting time in to help fundraise and to grow the game of hockey in Detroit Lakes.
After graduation, Trey plans to go on to college and study law, where he can funnel his passion for helping people into a meaningful profession. “I’ve always been interested in helping special victims,” he says. “I’ve just always been interested in it.”

SENIOR STANDOUT JUSTINE LAWRENCE Gymnastics
This team captain hasn’t let injuries stop her from doing her best, or from maintaining a can-do attitude. Justine Lawrence has been in gymnastics since she was a toddler, and over the years she’s had to deal with a number of injuries, including two broken elbows, two concussions, a tear in her hip and a bulging disc in her spine. Gymnastics wasn’t the cause of all these pains, but at times Justine’s ability to perform as a gymnast has inevitably been affected. Still, according to her coach, Justine has always pushed through, never letting her injuries get the best of her. Never giving up. Justine says gymnastics has been a big part of her world for so long that it’s hard to imagine life without it. She loves being part of the team, and enjoys her role as captain. “I like to make sure everyone’s included, to not leave anyone out… and to encourage people to keep going,” she says. “If you’re scared to do something, your team can push you to do it. I love the team part, it makes it more fun.”
Her goal for the team this year is to take the gold again at the state championship, which would be the team’s fifth consecutive state win. She believes they can do it by pushing and supporting each other at practices, and through the power of positive thinking. “If you believe you can do it, then you can do it,” Justine says. “But if you tell yourself you can’t, then you won’t be able to do it.” Attitude doesn’t only affect performance, she adds, but it also sets the tone for every practice: “If you go to practice and you’re negative, it’s not going to be fun. If you’re positive, it makes things way easier… it’s more fun if everyone’s positive and happy.” After graduation, Justine plans to attend college. She’s interested in the fields of psychology and social work, but hasn’t narrowed down a major yet. She admits that life after high school, without gymnastics, will be an adjustment. “It’s been part of my life for forever,” she says of the sport. “It’s going to be hard to be done with it this year.” She highly recommends gymnastics to anyone thinking about joining: “I would encourage everyone to do it, because it
Justine is a very persistent and hard working athlete. She is one of the top gymnasts on our team but has had to work through some injuries that keep her from performing at her absolute best. Her attitude is always positive and she works well with the team and coaches.
is super fun and you have many people to support you through the hard times, so everyone should join. Team is everything, which is awesome!”
Age: 18 Parents’ names: Michelle Schons and Dave Lawrence Role/position on the team: Captain/ Bars and Beam How long she’s been involved in gymnastics: Since toddlerhood, initially as a member of the USAG program Other sports/activities she’s involved in: Key Club, Link Crew, Rotary Interact Club
