The sounds of “oohs” and “ahhs” are in the air, as this event tends to drop jaw like the trees are dropping leaves. Yes, it is time for the 36th annual Detroit Lakes Damien Home Tour. The big fundraising event for the charity group is set this year for Saturday, Oct. 1 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Every year at this time, the Damiens select a handful of spectacular houses with owners willing to open up their homes to the public. The home tour is proving stronger than ever, with a reported 500 people buying tickets to the tour last year. Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased at the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, La Barista, Mainstream Boutique, Central Market and from any Detroit Lakes Damien. Tickets at the doors of the homes are $20. A map of the five home sites are included with the tickets, complete with the addresses for an easy GPS punch-in. Those interested can start at any of the homes and make their way around from one gorgeous house to another, in no particular order. Something new that people will see this year is sponsorships from local floral and landscaping businesses, which will be displayed inside or outside of the houses they sponsor. Lists of all of the non-profit organizations that will benefit from the Damiens Home Tour will also be on display at the five different sites, including the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, Salvation Army, the Becker County Food Pantry, Dollars for Scholars and so many more. A few little rules to keep in mind: Participants must be at least 10 years old and have a ticket, no bare feet in the houses, bathrooms are not open to visitors and no photographs inside the homes. So now, get ready to gather the ladies or grab the husbands and head out to take in some of the area’s most beautiful homes with this kind of access and up-close appreciation only provided during the much-anticipated Damien Home Tour! – Paula Quam, Editor SUPPLEMENT TO THE TRIBUNE SEPTEMBER 28, 2016

New house on Big Detroit full of splendor
t’s clear from the get-go. To drive up into the Keith and Jo Streyle residence on South Shore Drive in Detroit Lakes is to start an amazing adventure, at least for those who love architecture and design, particularly of the contemporary sort. The labor of love and construction frenzy spanned two years from lot purchase to the day the couple moved in, right before Christmas this PAGE 6 | MAGAZINE
Story and photos by Paula Quam past year. The Leeds, N.D., natives had been coming to the lakes for 24 years, bouncing from lake to lake until finally resting in their current spot on Big Detroit. So by the time the couple was ready to build their own place from scratch, they knew exactly what they wanted. “I’ve been looking at magazines for years,” said Jo Streyle, who aside from a few requests from her husband, had been given the green light to “pretty much do whatever” she wanted with
design. “I knew I wanted big windows, and I’d always loved the contemporary look,” said Streyle, whose main focus would be creating a place where their entire family could come together – all four adult children, their spouses and 11 grandchildren. She wanted a place that could accommodate the entire Streyle clan. With the help of architect Tony Stoll of BHH Partners in Perham, it turned out to be nothing that a perfect-
FACING PAGE â Contemporary from the outside in, the Streyles built a house they say they hope to pass down to their children one day. ABOVE â Double-paned glass and a painted Fighting Sioux logo marks the entrance to the Sioux room, which the Streyles created as a spot for the family to hang out in. ly designed five bedroom, five bathroom, one bunkhouse home couldn’t handle. The two-story contemporary beauty stretches over 5,800 square feet of luxury living at the lake. From the outside looking in it is obvious this is a special dwelling, as the yard features a fun playhouse and putting green for the grandkids. “Well, the older kids played a lot on that this summer, too,” laughed Streyle. A large water fountain greets visitors at the door, as large flower pots adorn the entrance – flower pots with a self-watering mechanism. The “backyard” has a stunning view of the lake, as the property is lined with 100 feet of one of the most pristine shorelines in the area. Snuggled up against the house is a swimming pool decked out in colorful tile, giving the gathering space a “splash” of color and festive feel. Glass barriers provide an uninhibited view of the lake from the pool. “The pool was one of my top prior-
ities, and it’s been so fun to have this summer,” said Streyle. Although it’s tough to beat the gorgeous view that a well-done lakeside outdoor space can provide, the inside proves itself a fabulous force to be reckoned with. Floor to ceiling windows that vault 24 feet into the air give the massive house an airy feeling, as glass also lines the double set of stairs, giving the appearance of a “floating” staircase. Once upstairs, that same glass is used instead of typical drywall that would have otherwise sectioned the house off. “We didn’t want to close it off,” said Streyle, looking through the glass down onto her livingroom and kitchen below.
It’s a design choice that truly gives this house its contemporary stamp. Just across that open upstairs walkway is what is referred to as the “Sioux room,” which is a one-room celebration of everything UND hockey. “We’re pretty big fans,” said Streyle, who says not only did she attend the university for a while, but several of their kids and kids’ spouses graduated from there. “So this has been a really fun place for everybody to gather,” said Streyle, standing among the pops of bright green in the room and pointing out a framed jersey on the wall. “That’s from their win last year at the Frozen Four – it’s autographed,” she MAGAZINE | PAGE 7
said. Down the hall from there, a large bunkhouse seems to be a big part of the house’s heart, as the large room was designed with the Streyle grandchildren in mind. “It houses 12, and so since I have 11 grandchildren, there’s room for one more,” she said, with a mischievous giggle. The bunkhouse room is certainly the most magical part of the house, with little circle rugs adding sparkle and colorful pop to a room that is decorated with love.
TOP â Wide open spaces with limited separation is what the Streyles wanted when designing their home on Big Detroit. “I had the children paint those for the valances,” she said, pointing to a string of canvases painted by her grandchildren. Moon beams radiate from a crescent moon on the wall, as a sign above it says what Streyle has been saying to her kids for years. “I love you to the moon – that’s what I tell them,” she smiled. Although nooks of the house are clearly created with family in mind, the Streyles have their own favorite sections of the house designed just for them. “My husband really wanted an outdoor kitchen,” said Streyle, referring to the four season “porch” that features a large bar/kitchen area and
sliding glass walls that either open up completely to the outside or close it off. Only steps away is the real kitchen, which shines with clean elegance and the kind of space that a gal could let herself get lost in all day. “I really wanted a big kitchen like this,” said Streyle, who says the bulk of her decorations around the house came from Pottery Barn and a little shop in Minot she loves, called Inspired Interiors. “She’s got my style, and sometimes she’ll look for things for me when she goes to shows,” said Streyle of the shop’s proprietor. Although the entire house is Jo Streyle’s vision, it is really the master bedroom that encompasses her style.

“Lots of bling – I love bling and animal prints,” she said, running her hand across a sparkly pillow. Her walk-in closet resembles that of a movie star. “He (her husband, Keith) does have a little space for his things, too – back in the corner there,” she laughed. The master bathroom is luxurious and
spa-like, as a chandelier hangs above the tub, providing sparkle in the bathroom built for two. Even the steam shower is built for two. It is a magnificent house, true – but Streyle says it already feels like her home. “It really does, and hopefully one day it’ll be something that can be passed down for the kids to enjoy,” she said.

t sits on the western most edge of North Shore Drive in Detroit Lakes – perched on the very edge of the shore, looking almost majestic. At 401 North Shore Drive, it is the oldest “cabin” on the lake, dating back to 1907, when the gigantic six-bedroom structure was built as a summer retreat. Today, it is enjoyed exclusively by its owners, Dawn and Kevin Hovland and their friends and family. They moved into the historical gem in 2010. “My favorite part of the home is the uniqueness of the floor layout, because it’s so old,” said Dawn Hovland, breezing through the six-bedroom spread, which according to old property documents, was originally named “401 The Breeze”. “We just call it ‘the cabin’, but I do have an old wooden serving platter in the closet that is painted and says ‘The Breeze’”, said Hovland, who has a book of historical facts and old newspaper clippings regarding the house – a book that has been passed down from previous owners. “I love sharing the history of this place with people when they come and

visit,” she said excitedly, adding that her Grand Forks-based family, including her husband and two young adult children, truly use the house as their getaway cabin. “We used to just come in the summer and lock it up in the winter, but since the (Detroit) mountain opened back up, we keep the cabin open all year round now,” she said. “I grew up with my parents taking me to the mountain here in DL, so now we’re here more skiing.” For four decades, the community ABOVE â The original breezeway of the Hovland home is one of Dawn Hovland’s favorite places to be, as she enjoys talking to people about the history of the 109-year-old home. is a whole different experience, as the modern touches and youthful splashes of life seem unable to taint the authenticity found around every little turn – and there are many. Some of the furniture pieces and decor around the house were kept there from previous owners, but most are things Hovland took out of their old farmhouse in North Dakota. For them, it continues to be the place they come to let their hair down and relax. “I love how close we are to the lake,” said Hovland, referring to the fact that the house sits only 20 feet from the shoreline. “I mean, it’s right there – you can’t build that close anymore, but we’re grandfathered in.”

The fact that the “cabin” is so large and accommodating is another one of Hovland’s favorite things about it, as the family loves entertaining without having to worry about space. Touches of Hovland’s late father, NDSU Professor Brian Abraham, also help make the house feel like a home, as his handiwork can be seen around the property in the form of carved wooden frogs, fish, and some old, brass egg-shaped door knobs he added to doors and an old, crank-style phone that hangs in the house...among other things. “I think it’s just a fun place for us to be,” said Hovland. “I really do love it.”

knew the big beach house as the home of Doc Watson and his wife, but it has since gone through a couple of other owners, including Mara and Chris Bergen of Bergen’s Greenhouses. “They’re the ones who really did a lot to the house, restoring it and really just opening it up,” said Hovland. To walk through the house is a bit like walking back in time, as the original breezeway with old Douglas fir floors provides an authentic space to sit and look out onto the lake. The 3,500 square-foot, six bedroom, three bath home features two floors, a full basement (which was unusual at the time it was built) and also a full attic. Photos show the unique, old design of the house, but walking through it
ABOVE â A large screened-in porch in the back of the Hovland house has been looking out over the lake for generations. It sits only 20 feet from the shoreline, which today is not permitted. Home built with love Iversons build home ‘not big, but perfect’ for them Story and photos by Paula Quam PAGE 20 | MAGAZINE

enny and Jo Iverson have been lake people for a long time now. “We’ve been on Lake Seven, Rose Lake... we were in Perham for a many years - we’ve been on different lakes,” said Jo Iverson. So when they moved to Detroit Lakes a year and a half ago, the Iversons were content to just be close to the lake if it meant they could find a nice spot to build a home designed perfectly for the two of them. They found that at 817 Whitetail Lane in Detroit Lakes. “We built it with Marty Solmon, and it was great because we knew what

we wanted, and he just defined it all and made it happen,” she said. What the Iversons wanted was an open-feeling, three bedroom, three bathroom home with a den and a spalike bathroom. “I didn’t want it too big because it gets to be too much to clean,” said Iverson. “We’re older, and we just wanted a retirement home.” The clean, classic-looking home features beautiful, dark knotty alder cabinets and hickory floor, while spotted, earthy granite makes the kitchen “pop.” But it’s the fireplace that will likely have impressed visitors asking questions.
“I ran into this tile, and I thought how pretty that would be on a fireplace, and people were like, ‘no, no, don’t do that’, and I had never seen anything like it before, but I thought it would be beautiful,” said Iverson, who turned out to be right. The gray tile makes for quite the focal point, as a metalworks sailboat adds a stamp of home. “Denny and I were in Florida when we found that - we were at an art place, and he went one way, I went the other,” said Iverson. “When we met back up I told him that I wanted to show him something, and he said, ‘I want to show you something, too’, and it turns out we both walked back to that same sailboat that reminded us of both Florida and MAGAZINE | PAGE 21

Detroit Lakes. The master bathroom is everything the Iversons wanted it to be, with a large, open shower, private bath area and separate sink stations. “We’d had the double sinks before, but I just love the separate stations,” said Iverson. Upstairs is mostly for the people closest to the Iverson’s hearts - their children and grandchildren. A large, airy room not only features sleeping quarters, but also an entertainment space for TV and a table for things like card-playing. “The kids just love it up here - they fight for this room,” laughed

ust this year, Bryan Schoenberger and Jesse Jepson did what they set out to do years ago – they planned and built a house that is so perfect for them that it also doubles as their business center. Schoenberger is the owner of MLC (Modern Living Concepts) Homes, a custom home building company that he started in 2004, and Jepson is his partner. “I’d meet customers at their home or at our builder’s association or a

restaurant – I wouldn’t bring them to the house,” said Schoenberger, who by 2012 knew he wanted to have a central location that would not only be a great house for he and Jepson, but would also be the ideal spot to meet customers and run his business. What would seem simple for a guy who builds houses was anything but, as the couple found a piece of land and slowly began the process of creating their abode. “We worked on the design for over five years before we actually built it,” said Schoenberger, who says they mod-
ified and tweaked and made sure the setup was exactly what they wanted. In a way, their home would be their showroom, so getting it right was important. “It gave me empathy for customers, where I might be chasing them down with a book trying to get them to make a decision on something, this made me kind of think that, yeah, decisions really are final,” said Schoenberger, adding that Jepson’s brother, who owns 4 Pete Scapes Landscaping, began clearing out roughly 300 trees on some property northeast of Detroit Lakes, just up the road from the Detroit MAGAZINE | PAGE 31

Mountain Recreation Area. “All the boulders you see out there came straight out of the hill here, so we were fortunate enough to have that natural resource right in our own yard,” said Schoenberger, adding that the project definitely took some visualization. When it came to the home, he knew he

wanted in-floor heating both throughout the house and in the garage. She knew she wanted a reading nook and central vac to keep dust and animal hair down to a minimum, as the couple has two dogs and two cats. With the final plan ready to go, Schoenberger began building the four bedroom, three bath,

two dozen of those so far. “You know, people really are focused on what their own homes are going to look like,” said Schoenberger, as Jepson added, “But there are people who come in here and are like, ‘Oh, I love this.’” And yes, even a few customers have stolen ideas from the MLC home, which the couple loves. Upstairs, the business office and

conference room are just past Jepson’s little reading nook. It’s a plan that is proving to work well for the both of them. A large shop was built in the backyard for storage space, business equipment and their camper. The yard, which is already alive with green grass and foliage after the initial planting this spring, also features a fenced in area for pets and a view made for nature-lovers. “A huge bonus for us here is that we’re right in the heart of the mountain biking scene,” said Schoenberger, adding that he and Jepson love to bike and even created some of their own trails in the wooded area behind their house. “That’s really what it’s all about,” he laughed. The MLC House is located at 16075 Gravelle Lane, Detroit Lakes.

Retreat for two The Greens’ home created with them in mind
ABOVEâ The Judy and Scott Green home didn’t look anything like this six years ago when they bought it. The couple totally gutted the place from floor to ceiling and turned it into a place just for them. They wanted wide open spaces, a much larger kitchen and a place to come home to where they could relax after their long commute from Fargo.

hey say home is not a place, but a feeling. When Judy and Scott Green moved from Fargo to Detroit Lakes six years ago, it was incredibly important to them to be able to come home and truly feel at home. It needed to be a destination that was

well worth the long commute back and forth to Fargo for their jobs – a home that could feel more like a retreat built just for the two of them. What they found was a house at 1765 East Shore Drive. At that time, it wasn’t the actual house that had them laying the money down. “It was location, location, location,” said Scott Green of the property
years to turn the house into the home they had always envisioned. “We pretty much designed it ourselves,” he said. “Every wall, every floor, the entire ceilings in every room were gutted, so it took longer to renovate it than it would be to build a new home.” The Greens had a vision in mind, and what they wanted was to build around their property’s God-given focal point.
“We wanted to really open it up and have more visibility to the lake,” said Judy Green. “So we replaced all the windows, got wider doors,” she said, pointing towards the large picture window that framed a beautiful view of the lake as if it really were a framed photograph. They took out a two-sided fireplace that stood alone between the living

The 1991 two-story, 2,200 square foot house was in need of some TLC, and the Greens were ready to give it all they had. “The first remodel was just to get into the home, and the second one was much more extensive,” said Green, adding that it took them four

LEFT â The Greens keep the spare bedrooms upstairs ready for their adult children, who now live on the East Coast. They say they mostly live on the main floor of the house, which they designed with the two of them in mind. BELOW LEFT â A dry sauna in the master bedroom tucks underneath the stairs so that it doesn’t take up any space in the room. A TV on the wall facing it is wired into the sauna so that the couple can still hear it while inside sauna.
A slate wall at the other end of that space marks the end of the living room. Piece by piece, room by room, the Greens turned the two-story structure into their own. For the most part, the couple lives on their main floor, feeling little need to go upstairs, where two bedrooms and a bathroom remain ready for their adult children to visit. The master bedroom was carefully designed with the idea of having a little slice of a retreat right in their own room. A dry two-seat sauna is quite the jaw dropper, as it sits only a couple of feet from their bed, facing a large TV on the wall.
RIGHT â A second spare bedroom is set up for the Green’s adult son, which overlooks Big Detroit.
