unique Showcase of talent

Good things happen when metalwork marries interior design Story & Photos: Pippi Mayfield

odern with a touch of rock and roll. That’s how Eric and Tami Soyring describe their home, and that unique home is a showcase for their talents, and their business as well. Owners of StraightLine Design — she’s an interior designer, he’s a custom metal crafter — the Soyrings have personal touches throughout their home that make a visitor feel they know the family a bit more after a tour. Anything metal in the house — from frames to the staircase, bed frames, sliding doors to the roof — Eric created. Trees in the living room, paintings on the walls and even just the light fixtures, those are Tami’s visions. And they are visions the two have been collecting and creating for years. The couple toured the country with Eric’s band for many years, and along the way, studied magazines, toured other homes and dreamed of the house they would one day create together. That house now stands at 662

Lake Forest Circle, and the couple completed about 95 percent of the house themselves, Eric said. “We’ll have fun together,” Tami said. “I’ll ask if he can do this, and he does.” “We work well together,” he agrees. Eric said he has also learned over the years, that regardless of what Tami comes up with for ideas and design, they all work out in the end. Finished just over a year ago, their house not only serves as their home, but as a showcase for their work. Clients can visit their home and see what the team can do for them. “It’s good experience for owning a business. It’s fun to do your own personal touches and display our work,” Eric said. The main level of the house hosts the couple’s office, a powder room, a piano room — also known as the New York room, with a skyline of New York on one wall — formal dining room, kitchen — with a more intimate eating space they usually use — and the living room. Upstairs are four bedrooms — the Soyrings have two children: Savannah and Gabriel — two bathrooms, laundry room and the theater/workout room. “At night when we turn out the lights, everything gets black except the TV,” Tami said of the black-walled theater room. Many pieces of artwork throughout the house are either personalized or have a story behind them, too. Like

Outside the house in back, they have a patio area with picnic table that Eric built for her as a Mother’s Day gift, grill and sink, and a fire pit — which Eric also made — so they can all sit around and roast s’mores. During their time on the tour bus, not only did they come up with ideas, along the way, they purchased pieces of what would become their house. They purchased land for the house while touring and paid for it before they even built, and they had their previous house filled with pieces of the new house. They had the kitchen sink years before they built a kitchen. Doorknobs well in advance, doors and windows before they were needed and other fixtures they knew they’d want in their new home. Even with all the sweat and dedication that went into this house, the Soyrings say they’ll build again — someday. FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2011

“It’d be a shame not to use all the knowledge we learned along the way,” Eric said. But not necessarily anytime soon. “All of our energy is going into family, and design,” Tami added.

For now they’ll collect ideas for themselves but create for clients, which they happily do together. “We feel so blessed. Not just for the sticks and stones of a house but for our relationship,” Eric said.

ooks are certainly deceiving when seeing Russ Maring’s home from the outside. Although the fountain out front, lion statues at the door and patios in front and off to the side all indicate this is an upscale house, it’s not until a person gets in the front door and starts walking around that they learn there’s a seemingly endless number of rooms. “It’s a good house. It’s good for entertaining, good for the kids, good for all that stuff,” Maring said. Located at 940 South Shore Drive in Detroit

“I just said, I want this for my office” Lakes, Maring and his partner in the hotel business, Jon Wimbush, purchased the land 33 years ago. Back then, it was a resort named Allen’s Cabins. “There were cabins all over the place and a lodge,” Maring said. Once they purchased the land, some of the cabins were torn down, some were moved to the YMCA on Cormorant Lake, and two were left standing next to where the garages now stand. On the other side of the garages and cabins, the two families put in a shared swimming pool and tennis court, located between the two main houses. Eight years ago, the Marings remodeled and added onto their home. On the main level, there is a guest bedroom and bathroom, another bathroom, the kitchen, living room, dining room, laundry, pantry and a bar for entertaining. The kitchen is open to the dining room and a sitting area, so it’s easy for family and guests to be together while preparing

food. Maring’s office is also on the main level. Formally a deck on the house, his office is now filled with a sitting area, desk and a wall of pictures with the Marings and various awards and pictures with celebrities. “I just said I want this for my office, and they (designed) around it,” he said. Curio cabinets in the dining room are filled with pieces collected from around the world from various trips the Marings have taken. Maring’s wife had some health problems, making it difficult to move between levels of the house, so he had an elevator installed to take her from floor to floor. She passed away last December. “It’s a new elevator made to look old,” he said. The lower level of the house includes a guest bedroom with a fireplace and a bathroom and walk-in closet, with a private patio area that faces the beach and lake. “There’s still enough elevation to

There is a second and third guest bedroom downstairs, a bathroom, an exercise room and a recreation area with a pool table, television and kitchenette. “This is for the kids and the grandkids,” he said. Maring’s kids live in Fargo, he said, so they come to visit often. The downstairs also boasts a large enclosed deck that overlooks the lake as well. Upstairs is the master bedroom, two bathrooms and a walk-in closet. Upstairs also houses a football room. Maring has overstuffed couches and a large television for the games. “I wanted to keep the staircase because the elevator isn’t fast enough for me.” Maring now splits his time between his Detroit Lakes home and Scottsdale, Ariz., but in the beginning, he was just a North Dakota guy who had no idea what he was purchasing when he bought the former resort. “We didn’t have a clue what lake living was like,” he said of him and Wimbush. “We bought it in the middle of winter, sight unseen.” Thirty-three years later, anyone can see it was a good move. hen Julie and Walt Aanenson retired, they wanted to have a downsized twin home that was still big enough for their family. Mission accomplished. “We designed this. We drew up the plans as we wanted,” Julie said. “We like the open design. It’s nice for entertaining.” Three years ago, the couple moved from East Grand Forks to 1411 Long Lake Drive, and they made sure they could see the lake, regardless of where they’re at in their home. “Just about every room in the house has a view of the lake,” Walt said. “We wanted a lot of windows,” Julie agreed. Upon entering the Aanenson home, there is an office, open kitchen, dining room, living room and master suite — bed-room, bathroom and closet — and laundry room on the main level. When they designed the twin home, they created just

one small, shared wall between the two units. Upstairs, it happens to be the dining room wall. The adjoining home was built as a spec home and later sold. Also when they designed the house, which they did with the help of Fargo designer Paul Sorum, they made sure to have everything they needed on one level, to avoid excess use of the stairs. To make the house look even bigger and more open, they have high ceilings upstairs and down. When the Aanensons sat down with Sorum to design their new home, they talked about what they liked about their existing house in East Grand Forks and incorporated those features into the new place. The downstairs houses a large sitting area, three bedrooms and two bathrooms — ready for when their

children and their families visit. They were even considerate enough to make sure they put a tub in the downstairs bathroom for the young grandkids. “It works out well when everyone is here. We have room for the kids and the grandkids,” Walt said. And like upstairs, the downstairs has a view of the lake as well. The walkout basement gives easy access to a fire pit and Long Lake. To enjoy that view for most of the year, the Aanensons can sit in their three-season room off the downstairs living room. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer a great view, and the ability to open the windows and just have screens showing is an added bonus for those breezy summer evenings. “We’re very pleased,” Julie said.

The garage, which can actually hold four vehicles, is filled with their two vehicles, Walt’s classic Thunderbird he’s had since high school, and the woodworking projects he’s gotten to spend more time on since retiring from being a superintendent. From the front, the twin home looks average sized, but from the back, the sprawling home is more eminent. “It’s the perfect retirement home,” Julie said. And location, location, location is a plus. Not only is it located on the lake, but it’s close to town, but not in town, Julie said. The wooded lot used to be a campground and is now being developed for single-family homes. When asked to be on the Damien’s Fall Home Tour, Julie said it was an easy decision because it’s a fund-raiser for a good cause, with proceeds going to area charities.

Down the stairs — where the railings are unique with cut-outs inserted into the wood design — are the two girls’ bedrooms, a bathroom and a large area used for a family room and a place to gather with friends. “They can have friends over and watch movies. It’s really nice for the kids,” Jodie said. There is also a patio off the walkout basement. Though the house is wired for surround sound throughout, the family just uses it in the basement for the movies. Whether they watch together as a family or the girls are downstairs with friends, the Johnson home is beautiful and large, but centers around their family. “Our house is definitely very lived in,” she said.

WARM&inviting The Strand home is impressive, yet still cozy, with beautiful gardens Story & Photos: Pippi Mayfield

alking into her home back in 2008, Velva Strand knew it was hers. “It was the wow factor when I walked in the

door.” And wow it does. Open the door to the one-level home at 2226 Wilderness Trail in Detroit Lakes, and anyone can see what she’s talking about. The kitchen, dining and living rooms are all one area, and the 13-foot ceilings make it look even more open and spacious. Built by Dick Bristlin at the end of 2008, Strand, a realtor, said she was just simply going to walk through the house and become acquainted with the listing, in April of the following year. The kitchen, which is made for entertaining, boasts granite countertops, maple cabinets and hickory flooring. “When my kids are home, it’s great,” Strand said of the

open area. “I’m cooking and they’re all just right here.” Strand has three adult children, and her husband, Bill Strand, also has two adult children. Bill is an airplane pilot, and Strand is not only a realtor, but is going back to work as a flight attendant, a position she held for many years before airlines started merging after 9-11. Tucked away in the living room, near the dining area, is a bar Strand revamped from the original. Pushed back against the wall, it’s hardly noticeable, but it has the capability to pull completely out so a bartender can get behind it, along with two stools for guests. Through the living room is the sun porch, which serves as Strand’s office, and through there is the master bedroom. Although smaller in size, it’s as great as the great room that serves as the living room. With space for two sitting areas and a massive entertainment

center, there are separate his and her closets as well. The master bathroom includes a shower and separate Jacuzzi tub, along with a private stool area. Down a hallway off the entryway, there are two spare bedrooms, a bathroom and the laundry room as well. There is surround sound throughout the house. Of all the rooms, of course it’s the kitchen and great room that Strand lists as her favorites. “There is lots of cabinet space,” she said of the kitchen. “Actually, I can’t find my stuff most of the time,” she adds with a laugh. “It’s an entertainment home. It’s great when you have family — everyone is all together.” Outside the house, Strand said she and her husband have worked for the nearly five years they’ve lived there to make the yard what it is. Showcased on the spring garden tour last summer, the Strand yard includes rock gardens filled with hostas, and path through the evergreens. “It’s a park-like setting,” she said. The house sits on 158-feet of Glawe Lake shoreline, and they have access to Big Detroit Lake just down the street. Though they aren’t on Detroit Lake, they do have a pontoon in the slip provided for those living in The Preserve, the development the Strand house is located in. That works well for pontooning to their favorite restaurants around the lake, she added. After the changes they made inside and the extensive yard work they did outside, Strand said the house is basically maintenance-free now, short of some basic mowing and weeding. “I just knew I wanted it,” she said of the house. “It’s nice, but comfortable. I don’t feel like people can’t come in and be comfortable.”
