Our economic base is solid and stable with a good mix of manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and retail. In addition, we are a regional hub for many service type businesses. Detroit Lakes has achieved the status of “Minnesota Star City” due to our many economic development programs. Detroit Lakes is the home to the Northwest Water Carnival, Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, Polar Fest and the Detroit Mountain Recreation Area! • On average there are 150 kids at the club after school each day. • In 2019 over 27,000 meals and snacks were served. • Over 70% of our Club members participated in STEM activities in 2019. • The entire Club reads for 30 minutes every day in the summer… collectively, 67,000 minutes of reading happened in 2019. • 73 of Club members received individualized academic support through Targeted Services in 2019. • In 2019, The Club provided outreach programming focused on job skills to 51 Detroit Lakes high school students. • Over 60% of our Club members chose to participate in daily fitness challenges. • Every Thursday in the summer, the Club’s Rec on the Go trailer goes to a local park to provide games and fitness activities for area youth. • The Club partners with Let’s Go Fishing to provide weekly fishing trips on Detroit Lake. • The Club partners with 4-H to provide specialized programming in photography, videography and robotics for our Club members. • The Club Teens do community service projects like hosting blood drives twice a year, volunteering at the Humane Society and making and delivering treats to our law enforcement agencies.

AUDUBON The city of Audubon is located on Highway 10 approximately 40 miles east of Fargo, ND, and 210 miles northwest of Minneapolis, MN. Situated in the southwest corner of Becker County, it developed as a result of the 1871 expansion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Audubon was established as a community in 1873; it was settled mainly by farmers of Scandinavian descent. The town was named after the great American naturalist and artist, James A. Audubon. During an early tour of the “Audubon’’ branch of the NP line, a passenger, Audubon’s niece, commented on the beauty of the lily-covered prairie and asked that if a railroad station were ever built there, that it be named after her uncle. While searching for a township name, the Audubon name suggestion seemed to stick, and on Jan. 2, 1881, it became the official town name. Today, Audubon is home to not only Lake Park-Audubon Elementary School, but also Team Industries and other businesses, such as the Orton’s convenience store, Aurochs Veterinary Service, JCS Cabinetry & Design, Country Wood Products and TBS Express. Audubon also maintains a post office, a co-op elevator, a liquor store and a meat market — Audubon Meats, Inc. CALLAWAY Callaway is located about 12 miles north of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, approximately 45 air miles east of Fargo. It’s situated in Becker’s northwest corner, along the Soo Line Railroad’s “Glenwood route’’ — a section of track between Winnipeg and Minneapolis. The small farming communities of Richwood and Westbury lie within a 5 mile radius of Callaway. As the Soo Line pushed northward in 1903, the Callaway community developed. Callaway’s rich farmland attracted many early Scandinavian settlers who were interested in farming its fertile tracts of land. Today, agriculture remains Callaway’s main economic resource, but the city is also home to an Event Center, as well as both Beautiful Savior Lutheran and Assumption Catholic churches, a volunteer fire department, Lions Club, post office, municipal liquor store, Midwest Bank branch office, Native Harvest, Noah’s Insurance, On the Go Convenience Store, Cenex Harvest States elevator and Anderson Ag Services. DETROIT LAKES Detroit Lakes was originally home of the Sioux, until the Chippewa pushed them westward. During the mid 1800s, Detroit Lakes was a favorite resting place for travelers of the Red River Oxcart Trail, a 400 mile path from Winnipeg to St. Paul. For many years, the resting place was called “Ga-ia-wa-wangag’’ : a Chippewa name meaning, “Lake in which there is a crossing in a sandy place.’’ Settlers, having trouble pronouncing that name, preferred a traveling French priest’s description of the sandy place; he called it “Detroit,’’ using the French word for sand bar. The name stuck. As of the 2010 U.S. Census, Detroit Lakes had an estimated population of 8,569 residents. Today, Detroit Lakes is an important agricultural area; it is also the center of a thriving “412

Lakes’’ tourism district. Besides providing a strong educational system for its residents, Detroit Lakes is home to many different churches, two industrial parks and a variety of retail businesses. FRAZEE The city of Frazee is located at the junction of Highway 10 and Minnesota State Highway 87, approximately in the center of Becker County’s southernmost border; it is approximately 10 miles southeast of Detroit Lakes; 55 miles east of Fargo, and 195 miles northwest of Minneapolis. Frazee was settled in 1868, earning it the distinction of being the first area settled in Becker County. When the Hobart Depot and Weymouth Hotel moved to Frazee in 1874, the city of Frazee developed quickly. (It was said the food at the Weymouth was so good, that the NP Line scheduled regular stops to partake in its culinary delights.) The combination of the depot, a lucrative flour mill, and a booming logging industry, Frazee was Becker County’s largest city until the logging “boom’’ fizzled out at the turn of the century. At its peak, however, Frazee’s population climbed a little over 2000 in the late 1880s. Today, Frazee is home to many businesses. Daggett Trucking, the Frazee Municipal Liquor Store, Frazee Event Center, Ketter’s Meat Market, and O.K. Lumber are just a few examples of Frazee’s thriving business district. LAKE PARK The city of Lake Park is located on Highway 10 approximately 35 miles east of Fargo and 215 miles northwest of Minneapolis. With gentle rolling hills and an elevation of 1270 ft., Lake Park is a fertile farm area producing grain, potatoes, and livestock. Lake Park was named for a beautiful lake which used to be located on the original townsite. In the early 1870s, this lake was drained, however, to allow for the building of the NP Railroad. Although the lake was lost forever, the railroad stimulated Lake Park’s growth as settlers took advantage of its easy transportation to the region. Today, Lake Park is home to many area businesses. Besides a health clinic, community cooperative, hair salon, grocery store, laundromat, municipal liquor store, bank, city center, and public pool, the Lake Park community includes a variety of churches, including St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Lake Park Lutheran Church and Eskjo Lutheran Church. OGEMA Ogema is located on Becker County’s northern most boundary on Minnesota Highway 59. It’s approximately 21 miles due north of Detroit Lakes. Ogema was founded in 1906, nearly 40 years after the establishment of the surrounding White Earth Reservation; its name, however, means “Chief’’ in the Chippewa language. The town developed as the result of the Soo Line’s northward expansion. Today, Ogema is home to a municipal liquor store, a community hall, Community Development Bank and M & W Foods. The community also has a post office, elementary school (Waubun-Ogema-White Earth), Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the White Earth Initiative office building. Today, Osage is governed by a town board and its school age children are bussed to the Park Rapids School District. Osage is located within Osage Township and maintains a grocery store (Osage Country Market), community center and post office.

PONSFORD Ponsford is located on Becker County’s eastern boarder at the intersection of County Road 129 and a small section of Minnesota Highway 225. Ponsford is a rich farm ing community, maintaining a post office, trading post, and hardware store. Service organizations include: Northern Lights 4-H Club, a volunteer fire department (Carsonville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department), and the Helping Hand Club — a local organization devoted to helping the area’s poor and needy. Established in 1944, the organization is still going strong, “Doing unto others, as we would have others do unto us.’’ TWO INLETS Two Inlets is located on Becker County’s eastern border. Nestled quietly in Becker’s forest district, it is approximately 10 miles north of Osage and 12 miles northeast of Ponsford on County Road 44. The Two Inlets area was once a center of the thriving 1880s logging boom. Today, Two Inlets maintains a resort, sawmill, country store, Catholic church and town hall. WHITE EARTH The community of White Earth is located within the White Earth Indian Reservation. It is located approximately 22 miles north of Detroit Lakes at the intersection of County Road 23 and Minnesota Hwy. 224. The village of White Earth is governed by a community council. The council members are elected for two year terms and help facilitate community projects through fund raising efforts. White Earth village also maintains its own post office and ambulance service. WOLF LAKE Wolf Lake is located about three miles north of State Highway 87, in the corner of the Smoky Hills State Forest. Detroit Lakes is 32 miles due west of the village which was

settled mainly as a logging camp site. After the great forests of Minnesota had been exploited by big lumbering companies, Wolf Lake turned to farming. Today, Wolf Lake maintains many organizations including: VFW, VFW Auxiliary, Lions Club, and Wolf Pack Baseball Club as well as Wolf Pack Snowmobile Club, Wolf Lake Shooting Club and Wolf Sportsmen’s Club. Businesses include the Lakes Area Cooperative, Ray’s Repair and the Wolf Lake Municipal Liquor Store. It is named for a valley and lake in southern Norway. Among the first settlers were several people named Hitterdal. The town was named for Bendt O. Hitterdal, the original town proprietor. The post office began in 1887; M. J. Solum built a hardware and implement store on the first lot after the townsite was platted in 1896.

When the Soo Line built through the county in 1903-4, the general manager, Pennington, and his chief engineer, Thomas Green, named the stations as they moved the line north; all towns on the reservation had to have Indian names. The post office for this community was established in 1905 as Bement, changing to Waubun in 1906. PERHAM, located in Otter Tail County, is named after Josiah Perham, the first President of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The railroad arrived in Otter Tail County in 1871. A mercantile store was erected on the north side of the tracks the next year and Perham has been prospering ever since. Perham currently boasts of a state-of-the-art community fitness and recreation center; a 27-hole, championship golf course. It is also the center for surrounding agriculture and tourism.

VERGAS, located in Otter Tail County, is known as the “Home of the Loon,” the Minnesota State Bird. There is a giant 20 foot replica of the State Bird erected on the shore of Long Lake, in the center of City Park, which is also home to a public beach and picnic area. There are 25 lakes within a five-mile radius of Vergas. MINNESOTA STATE COMMUNITY & TECHNICAL COLLEGE-DETROIT LAKES

The Detroit Lakes campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College offers a broad array of career programs that provide hands-on training to meet growing market demands in the Minnesota lakes country and throughout the region. Part of a four-campus college, M State Detroit Lakes is located on Highway 34 East. Programs unique to the Detroit Lakes campus include Architectural Drafting and Design, Civil Engineering Technology, Business Entrepreneurship, Medical Assistant, Paralegal, PowerSports Technology, Radiologic Technology and Survey Technician. Students can complete the first two years of their bachelor’s degree by earning an Associate of Arts degree online or at any of the M State campuses in Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls, Moorhead or Wadena. M State also offers a number of Transfer Pathway degrees designed specifically for students intending to complete specific four-year degrees at Minnesota State universities. M State - Detroit Lakes is the only M State campus with a full-time child care center for students with children, and its program offerings include an associate degree in Early Childhood and Paraprofessional Education and a certificate in Child Care and Education. Through a cooperative agreement with the Detroit Lakes Public

Schools, the campus also houses the public school district’s Alternative Learning Center and Adult Basic Education programs. M State also serves regional businesses and industries through customized skills and technology training. More than 500 companies have hired the college’s Workforce Development Solutions division for hour-based training that focuses on specific training or production needs and for credit courses that help prepare workers for new responsibilities and advancement. Education Community

ECFE is for children ages 0-5 and their parents/ caregivers. Fun and interactive classes and activities are offered to support the parents’ role as their child’s first and most important teacher. All families are encouraged to attend. Preschool (School Readiness) classes are available to children who are 3-5 years of age by Sept. 1 of the school year. Literacy, music, social interaction, math, creative arts and science are all incorporated into learning opportunities with licensed teachers.

Detroit Mountain Recreation Area: Detroit Lakes’ year-round recreation destination includes a terrain park, tubing hill with warming house, 4.5 miles of cross country skiing trails, 6-8 miles of snow shoeing trails and 17 downhill skiing runs as well as skiing and snowboarding lessons, a ski lodge with rental shop, bar/restaurant and souvenir shop, and even a volunteer Ski Patrol to watch over visitors and provide aid as necessary. Wildlife Refuges

Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District: This U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service office manages more than 50,000 acres of wetland and prairie habitat on Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) and easements in Becker, Clay, Mahnomen, Norman and Polk counties. These diverse prairie and wooded areas provide habitat for more than 280 bird species.

Walk into the 1,372-acre Helliksen Prairie WPA in northwestern Becker County and experience the sights and sounds of a virgin tallgrass native prairie that is teeming with wetlands, wildlife and wildflowers. Hike the 1.5-mile Prairie Marsh Trail at the Headquarters WPA just north of Detroit Lakes and look for white-tailed deer, numerous migratory birds and other wildlife. Active osprey nests can be seen from the hiking trail. The trail is open during daylight hours for hiking and cross country skiing. Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge: Wetlands and native grasslands are being restored. Excellent viewing of waterfowl and birds of prey. Many interesting and unusual shore and marsh birds are nesting on the Refuge or can be seen during their migration period May-Nov. Best viewing in early morning and evening. Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge: Tamarac’s environmentally friendly Visitor’s Center features an exhibit area, bookstore, theater and more. The Discovery Center, located just across the road from the Visitor’s Center, offers environmental education programs for children throughout the region, both inside the main facility and at learning stations placed along the trail looping around the site. The Becker County Human Service Department is located at 712 Minnesota Avenue, Detroit Lakes. The main phone number for social services programs is 218-847-5628 or 866-454-5628 (toll free).

Social Service Programs

Services to Families and Children: Services provided to address abuse and neglect in families. Services include assessment/investigation of abuse and neglect, child protection and child welfare case management, in-home family support, foster care, adoption, and referrals to other community based services. Services are focused on the safety and well-being of children and families. Child Care Assistance: Lakes and Prairies Community Action Partnership, Inc., provides case management for the county’s childcare program. Located at 715 11th St. N., Suite 402, Moorhead MN 56560. Developmental Disability Services: Services provided to developmentally disabled children and adults to promote self-sufficiency, independence and community integration with services provided in the least restrictive setting. Case management services are provided to assist in assessing individuals’ needs to develop case plans, to arrange for services and to monitor outcomes. Mental Health Services: Case management services for adults and children experiencing difficulty with their emotional or mental health needs including a full range of mental health services. This may also include assisting the court to obtain involuntary commitments when necessary. Becker County Human Services coordinates mental health crisis services for adults and children. This includes the coordination of mobile crisis teams and collaboration with qualified crisis providers in the region. Chemical Dependency Services: Provide chemical dependency referrals to inpatient and outpatient facilities, case management and assisting the Court to obtain involuntary commitment when necessary. Services to Seniors: Long term care consultation services are provided which include providing information and education to individuals on services available for assisting with long term care and chronic care needs. Assessments are done to determine health, social and psychological needs and help is provided to identify services that are needed to support and maintain individuals in the last restrictive environment. Information is provided on eligibility for health care programs and recommendations are made on community-based services. Case management is provided to develop a case plan and arrange for services. Day Care and Foster Care Licensing: Recruits and licenses Adult and Child Foster Care homes in the county. Day care recruitment and licensing for Becker County is now provided by Sourcewell. More information can be found on the county web site under the Human Services Department. Adult Protection Services: This program provides services to vulnerable individuals including frail, elderly and disabled individuals. These individuals may be experiencing difficulty protecting themselves and obtaining basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Reports of vulnerable adults are received, investigated and services provided as needed. Services are focused on safety and wellbeing and support independent living. Agency staff collaborates and coordinates with home health, community health, law enforcement and other agencies that serve senior and disabled individuals. 36 | GUIDE TO BECKER COUNTY 2020

Financial Assistance

Health Insurance: Minnesota’s new online health insurance marketplace, www.mnsure.org, has a variety of options available. Becker County Human Services will have assistance available for anyone needing help filling out the online application. Call or stop by for an appointment. Diversionary Work Program (DWP): The Diversionary Work Program is a four-month program that helps low-income Minnesota families find jobs. The goal of DWP is to help parents immediately start working and eliminate the need to receive welfare benefits. They can receive financial assistance to meet their basic needs and receive other supports such as food support, child care and health care assistance. Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP): The Minnesota Family Investment Program is the state’s welfare program for low-income families with children. The focus of this program is to help families move toward economic stability by entering the workforce while offering resources of a cash grant, food support and child care assistance. Parents are expected to work. Most families can get cash assistance for only 60 months in a lifetime. General Assistance (GA): The General Assistance Program is for single adults and childless couples. The GA program provides monthly cash grants for eligible persons.

Minnesota Supplemental Assistance (MSA): Minnesota Supplemental Aid is a state funded program that provides a monthly cash supplement to people who are aged, blind or disabled and who receive Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Food Support Benefits: The Food Support program is a county-administered, federal program that assists people and families with low incomes to purchase food and better meet their nutritional needs. The program is not intended to supply all of a person or familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s food needs. Instead, it is a supplement to help them achieve or maintain their independence. Emergency Assistance: Helps individuals and families with housing, heat or other basic needs. Child Support Services: The child support program is a countyadministered, federal program that assists in the establishment and enforcement of obligations for the support of children, including basic support, medical support, and child care obligations. They will establish paternity and support obligations if there is no order for support. If there is an order for support, they will take the necessary enforcement steps to collect the obligation due on the case for the children. They will modify the obligations as allowed by statute to assure that the obligation is according to Minnesota Guidelines. Some of the enforcement remedies include: Location of parents; income withholding from payer of funds; driver, occupational and recreation license suspension; passport denial; levy of accounts; civil and criminal contempt actions.

Home Visiting Programs: Evidence based ongoing home visits are offered to pregnant women, infants, and children to provide ongoing support to eligible families. Car Seat Program: Education and installation of infant and child car seats offered to eligible residents of Becker County. Child and Teen Checkups: Children and Teens up to age 21 who are enrolled in Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare can receive well child checkups through their health plan with their regular doctor at their clinic. Checkups include: Complete physical exam, information about good physical health, immunizations, hearing/vision check, lab tests, dental varnish, growth/development checks, dental referrals and referrals to health care providers if needed. Public Health also provides the outreach for the Child and Teen Checkups Program. Parents are contacted reminding them to schedule an appointment with their primary care provider for well child checkups. Dental Varnishing: Preventative fluoride treatment for young children. This visit does not replace regular dental care. Volunteer Drivers: The Volunteer Driver Program is now housed at Becker County Human Services, and offers transportation for pre-approved recipients to medical appointments when necessary. Public Health

MnCHOICES Assessment: People with long term or chronic care needs can request an assessment by a nurse or social worker to determine eligibility for long term care services. Personal care assistance assessments for medical assistance eligible participants are also screened through this process. Case Management: Ongoing case management services are provided for waiver eligible clients residing in Becker County. Disease Prevention and Control: Information and resources for immunizations, prevention of communicable diseases, and tickborne illnesses, ongoing education, outreach and surveillance of communicable disease under the direction of the Minnesota Department of Health. Emergency Preparedness: Collaborative efforts to address potential county-wide natural or man-made disasters or disease out breaks.

Family Based Services

WIC: WIC, which stands for Women, Infants and Children, is a nutrition education program serving income eligible pregnant and postpartum women, infants to age one, and children to age 5. The program provides nutrition and breastfeeding education, health referrals, and vouchers for supplemental food. Universal post-partum/newborn visit: All Becker County families with a newborn are contacted by a Public Health Nurse if they request. A home visit is offered to provide new parents with information on feeding choices, newborn cares and additional support and resources available in the community. Breastfeeding Support and Counseling Services: Certified lactation nurses are available to provide support and education to new mothers who are interested. Follow Along Program: A program available to all children in Becker County under age three and their parents. A series of developmental questionnaires are mailed to parents for them to complete and return

The Community Caregivers-Faith in Action Volunteer Program provides assistance to elderly and disabled in Becker County through a network of volunteers, congregations, and agencies. Volunteers benefit from training and ongoing support, and enjoy an opportunity to develop and express their spirituality through engaging in meaningful service to others. The Senior Companion Program provides assistance to help frail, elderly and disabled adults in Becker County to stay at home. Companions are over the age of 60, and “do what friends do for friends.” The program is provided in partnership with Becker County, Lutheran Social Services, and the United Way, and through donations to the Emmanuel Foundation. A fee may apply. Community Support Systems provide wellness education, strength based counseling and support groups for those living with Alzheimer’s, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease. Support groups meet regularly at Ecumen-Detroit Lakes and are free of charge. Helping Hands Ministry assists the elderly and disabled of the Detroit Lakes area community with minor home repairs and home maintenance in the spirit of Matthew 25:35; “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink: I was a stranger

and you took me in. I was naked and you clothed me: I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” The Community Homemaking Program (218-844-7154) provides meal preparation, routine household assistance, shopping, and general support to individuals living within ten miles of Detroit Lakes. Becker County Caregiver Support Team, 218-847-1385 A network of volunteers and professionals with the goal of offering caregivers an opportunity to learn, relax, socialize, and recharge in the company of other caregivers, by hosting two caregiver retreat events each year — one in the spring, and one in the fall. Winter, spring, summer, fall… it’s always the season for fun in Becker County Detroit Lakes, a hive of activity year-round Winter, spring, summer or fall — regardless of the time of year, Detroit Lakes plays host to a wide assortment of entertaining activities, events and festivals each January through December. Regardless of the season, there are always trails to be found at Sucker Creek and Dunton Locks, for hiking, cross country skiing or simply enjoying nature up close and personal. There are also lots of quaint shopping boutiques and stores as well as several coffee shops for you to stop, rest and meet some friends for a hot cup of java, espresso or an iced beverage of your choice — and some of them have some pretty tasty food as well. During the winter, a village of fish houses takes over Big and Little Detroit lakes, and snowmobilers will find over

250 miles of groomed trails winding their way through the woods and fields of Becker County. At the 200-acre Detroit Mountain Recreation Area (www. detroitmountain.com), located just a few short miles southeast of Detroit Lakes, guests can enjoy a full range of winter activities, from downhill and cross country skiing to tubing, fat bike trails and even a terrain park to try out your snowboarding and slope style skiing skills. Maplelag Resort (www.maplelag. com), located between Callaway and Richwood, offers almost 45 miles of cross country skiing and snow shoeing trails, an ice skating rink and sliding hill, and is also home to the Moosejaw Old-Time Dance, Clogging & Music Weekend (March 13-15, 2020).

Other area resorts offering snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing and snow shoeing activities during the winter months include Rainbow Resort near Waubun (www.rainbowresort. com), Pinehurst Resort outside Naytahwaush (www.pinehurstmn. com) and Ice Cracking Lodge & Resort (www.icecrackinglodge.com) in rural Ponsford. Detroit Lakes’ annual Polar Fest celebration, which usually gets underway during the second weekend in February, offers 10 days of winter fun, from ice tee golfing to frozen fireworks to a “Freeze Your Buns Run” and the infamous Polar Fest Plunge, in which foolhardy area residents plunge into the arctic waters of Little Detroit Lake to raise funds for the local Boys & Girls Club. complete schedule of events as well as photos from various fest activities and a merchandise store featuring a variety of Polar Fest 2020 winter gear (hats, scarves, etc.) and memorabilia for sale. Once the ice is off the lakes and the snow has melted, area anglers begin to turn their thoughts to the annual Minnesota walleye and bass fishing opener, which will take place on May 9 this year. Will the weather be friendly for anglers? Will the boat motor start? Will the bass and walleyes bite? Is there enough bait? Those questions will once again be on the minds of anglers and bait dealers as they ready for the season. Most answers won’t be known until shortly after Friday turns into Saturday at the stroke of midnight, when anglers can get onto their favorite lakes once more — and legally keep the northern pike, bass, walleyes and lake trout they catch. Spring months can also find lakes area residents and visitors alike looking through the treetops for that one-of-a kind bird — during the 23rd Annual Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, May 14-16 — or searching through the downtown booths at the Street Faire at the Lakes, May 29-30, for the perfect handcrafted treasure.

In addition, springtime also offers a last chance to catch your breath before the never-ending march of summer events begins. Summer, which doubles the population of Detroit Lakes each year, brings iconic celebrations like the Northwest Water Carnival, which has been in existence for over eight decades now, as well as the Becker County Fair (celebrating its 127th anniversary in 2020) and the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament (established 89 years ago). There are also endless hiking, biking, swimming, boating and of course, golfing opportunities available for visitors at any time, from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on into the fall months. Detroit Lakes boasts 412 lakes within 25 miles, including two inside its city limits — Big and Little Detroit — as well as a mile-long city beach that is one of the community’s biggest summer attractions. In addition, the county boasts more than a half dozen golf courses, with most of them to be found within a 20-minute drive of DL. As previously mentioned, Dunton Locks and Sucker Creek provide plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring, as does Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Maplewood and Itasca

state parks are also just a short drive or bike ride away. History buffs may want to stroll through the Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Detroit Lakes (at the junction of Washington Avenue and Highway 10), which contains plaques and monuments celebrating area war veterans past and present; the Grand Army of the Republic Park located just a couple blocks north of Highway 10 on Washington Avenue, which is one of just a handful of GAR parks still in existence across the USA; and Oak Grove Cemetery, located just north of town on Highway 59, which boasts a Civil War monument erected more than a century ago. And be sure to check out the Becker County Museum at 714 Summit Avenue (across the parking lot from the DLCCC) — which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Tuesday through Saturday — where you can view the plans for the new museum building, scheduled to begin construction this fall. Labor Day weekend brings two popular area events, the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion (Sept. 4-7), which has been bringing steam engine lovers and old-school farming enthusiasts to the tiny community of Rollag (www.rollag. com) for more than six decades now, and the Laddies Loppet Mountain Bike Stage Race at Maplelag (Sept. 5-6), now entering its 30th year. Over at Richwood Winery, located just to the east of the tiny hamlet of Richwood (17 miles north of Detroit Lakes), guests can sample a variety of vintages while relaxing in the bucolic setting. The winery has live music every weekend through the summer months, and also hosts several fun events including the Summer Solstice

Festival (June 20); Toast to Tamarac (Sept. 11), a benefit for the nearby Refuge hosted by the Friends of Tamarac Refuge (see www. tamaracfriends.org for more info); and the Grape Stomp (Sept. 12), which has become a fall tradition. Speaking of Tamarac Refuge, as the leaves begin showing their beautiful fall colors and the air turns crisp and cool, Tamarac’s new Discovery Center shifts into a higher gear, playing host to well over 3,000 area grade school students between September and May. The environmental education facility, which officially opened to the public in July 2015, offers both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities with a staff of experienced and well trained volunteers from the Friends organization. Tamarac also hosts its annual fall festival on Sept. 26, with guests invited to explore the confines of the Refuge by bus, by car or on foot, as well as participating in a series of organized, environmentally-themed activities for the whole family — all free of charge, though food, memorabilia and other amenities are available for purchase at the festival site as well as in the gift shop at the environmentally friendly Visitor’s Center, which was renovated in 2014 to

incorporate geothermal heating and solar power. In addition, fall brings the 25th Annual Dick Beardsley Run (Sept. 12) and Damien Fall Home Tour (Oct. 3) in Detroit Lakes, along with Lake Park’s popular Pumpkin Fest (Sept. 26), and the Hairy Man 5K in Vergas (Oct. 3), an homage to the legendary, Bigfoot-like Hairy Man that is said to wander the Vergas trails at night. And that’s not even mentioning Leaf Days at Maplewood State Park (Sept. 26-27 and Oct. 3-4), along with the many other opportunities for viewing the area’s beautiful fall colors in September and October. As fall gives way to winter, the Historic Holmes Theatre’s new season ramps up with its annual Holmes Art Show in November, which brings dozens of area artisans to the Holmes Ballroom during the day, while offering a variety of live music in the main theater at night. Come Thanksgiving weekend, Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes hosts its Thanksgiving Feast on Nov. 26, the same day that Lake Park’s annual Parade of Trees opens at the American Legion, running through Sunday, Nov. 29. The Friday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 29, is also opening day at Detroit

Mountain, or “White Friday” as the staff likes to call it. Then on Monday, Nov. 30, downtown Detroit Lakes officially gets lit up for the holidays with Santa’s Grand Parade of Lights. December brings a plethora of holiday celebrations both public and private to the lakes area, leading up to Candles

& Carols (Trinity Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, Dec. 20); Christmas At Our House (First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, Dec. 25) and the annual New Year’s Eve Bash at the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center (Dec. 31).
