Van Rooyen drives for P-P medalist honors Gopher fires a 133 for meet low at DCC BY BRIAN WIERIMA

brianw@dlnewspapers.com

The University of Minnesota’s Erik Van Rooyen knows how to start and finish a hole as the 79th Pine to Palm Championship field found out Tuesday and Wednesday. Van Rooyen brought a strong driver and putter — along with his “A” game — into his first Pine to Palm Golf Tournament at the Detroit Country Club, as he ran away with Championship medalist laurels with a nine-under par 133. The two closest golfers to Van Rooyen were Frazee senior Beau Hanson and Moorhead’s Nick Olsgaard, who each fired a two-under par 140. Van Rooyen employs a long game, directed by his driver off the tee, while making his finishing touches with a steady putter. “Erik is the best driver and putter we have on the team,” said newly hired University of Minnesota men’s head golf coach John Carlson. “That’s a very good combination to have.” Both clubs were in full effect during his medalist path at the DCC, as he shot a fiveunder par 66 Tuesday and remained consistent Wednesday with a four-under 67. “This is a short course and I have been hitting the ball well as of late,” said Van Rooyen, who hails from Oudtshoorn, South Africa and is a junior at the U of M. “I was just using my driver well everywhere and I had some good putts, as well.” Tuesday, he drove hole six, a 282-yard jaunt, and played the back nine strong by shooting three birdies and an eagle on holes 12 through 15. He capped his round with a birdie on 18. “I didn’t get into any trouble and I just kept with my driver and hitting it straight,” Van Rooyen said. “I changed my putter about a month ago and it really has been working for me. The greens were a good speed today, too.” He sunk the majority of his putts, including a pair of 25foot birdies the last two days. Van Rooyen finished fourth overall in the Big Ten Championships this past season and was named to the PING AllRegion team. His sophomore stroke average of 73.02 was the 21st-lowest in the history of the Gopher program. For Hanson, his 75 on Wednesday was a bit off his 65 Tuesday, but he isn’t worried about stroke play anymore. It’s time for match play. “It just didn’t go well the entire day,” Hanson said. “My

It doesn’t bother me at all, though, I just wanted to gain a high seed and if I won medalist, that would have been awesome.” Defending champion Todd Hillier of Hoople, N.D., was able to see first hand Van Rooyen’s and Hanson’s game, since he played in their group for his practice round. Hillier didn’t have to qualify because

of his automatic exemption. Hillier didn’t back down, though, by carding a four-under par 67. “It was a great, fun day playing with Erik and Beau,” Hillier said. “I took a lot of good shots and it was a good warm-up for match play. “Playing with those two did inspire me to play well, I just focused and tried to keep up with them.” Hillier is pretty pumped

up heading into match play, where he made the long, grinding run last year for his Pine to Palm championship. “Walking up that 18th fairway and seeing that crowd, just made me feel ‘Game on!’” The cut came in at 151, with nine guys playing off for one spot, while more than some popular names will be making a return to match play. Roger’s Greg Melhus, who had a solid outing in round

one with a four-under 67, tailed off a little with a 77, but easily made the cut with a 144. He was the 2003 Pine to Palm champion and 2001 runnerup. Van Rooyen’s three teammates also qualified for match play. They include Alex Gaugert (146), Robert Bell (149) and Jon Trasamar (149). Some local players who made the cut include Detroit Lakes’ Laker junior Austin Rusness (145), Mox Gunderson (149), Michael Brodsho (150) and Perham’s Bob (146), Taylor (147), Lee (149) and Dan (150) Cavanagh. The field of 64 will start teeing off at 12:15 p.m. on the first tee and go through to 2:30 p.m. Kent Fronk of Jamestown, N.D., took the Mid-Am medalist laurels with a score of 74-70144. Winning Seniors medalist position was Fargo’s Clint Nelson with a one-under par 70, while Phoenix, Arizona’s Chuck Renner repeated as the Super-Senior’s lowman with a three-under par 68. All divisions and flights start match play Thursday. Hanson Leads after 1st day Age and Pine to Palm golf experience are the two biggest factors separating Rogers’ Greg Melhus and Frazee’s Beau Hanson, but they have a few things in common. Melhus enters the 79th Pine to Palm Golf Tournament at the Detroit Country Club having been there and done that, after being a champion in 2003, runner-up in 2001 and a

➤ Championship from page 2 multiple final four qualifier. Hanson, on the other hand, is still cutting his teeth in the tournament compared to Melhus, but the Frazee soon-tobe senior in high school has already experienced a good amount of success. Now both are chasing something neither has won in the Pine to Palm — medalist honors. Both will get their chance in Wednesday’s second and final round of qualifying for match play and the field of 64, which starts Thursday. Hanson leads the field after Tuesday’s first round with a six-under par 65, while Melhus is trailing by two strokes with a four-under 67. University of Minnesota junior Erik Van Rooyen is second after firing a five-under par 66. “I’ve won just about every trophy I want at the Pine to Palm except for medalist,” Melhus said. “Now, I can go out and fire at the pin and be a little more aggressive. I’m going to go out and get the best seed I can, if I can be medalist, great.” Hanson, who has collected an impressive amount of golf hardware in his young career, has had his eye on putting his name on the Pine to Palm Tournament champion/ medalist board at the DCC clubhouse for quite some time now. After his 65 Tuesday, it’s well within reach. “At first, I just was worried about qualifying and playing well, but after today, I can go for that medalist (position),” Hanson said. “It would be cool to get my name up on one of those boards, I’ve always wanted to be able to do that.” Hanson’s experience at the DCC is already pretty vast. He has won the Men’s Club championship three years running, as well as winning the Class 1A state individual championship in 2009 and third-place

Mike Balzer watches his drive on the ninth hole Wednesday afternoon. this past year. He started his week by carding a 66 Sunday at the DCC, which obviously was a sign of things to come. “The 65 is my best so far here (at DCC) and I’ve tied that about eight or nine times now,” Hanson said. “It gives me confidence that everything is going right, so far.” And everything was going right for Hanson Tuesday. He needed only 11 putts on the front nine, while carding two eagles, three birdies and just one bogey his entire round. The putter was his most ef-

fective club, but so were his approach shots, which shortened the distance to the hole for him. On the 507-yard Par 5 fifth hole, he was able to hit a draw over the trees into the wind, where he stuck the ball within three feet of the cup for a near double-eagle. On his second eagle of the day, which came on hole 12 (Par 5, 487-yards), again he was effective into a heavy wind, this time using a three iron to lay his ball to within 15 feet of the cup, where he buried it. He finished his round with

four consecutive pars. “I was putting well, but I was also putting myself in position for shorter putts,” Hanson said. “I only missed three or four greens (in regulation) .” A quick start was what Melhus needed to get his game rolling, which came in the form of two birdies on his first two holes. Although he took bogey on holes five and six, he recovered nicely and was four-under after the seventh hole. “That makes it a lot easier, instead of being two or three over, where you have to re-

5

ally grind it out then,” Melhus said. Melhus doesn’t mind chasing Hanson, who will be golfing in the same group Wednesday. “I’ve golfed with Beau a few times out here, it’ll be fun,” Melhus added. “I’m a fairway and greens guy, but I can be a little more aggressive after my 67.” Van Rooyen hails from Oudtshoorn, West Africa. He finished his sophomore season with a stroke average of 73.02, the 21st-lowest in the history of the program, and will enter his junior season at the U of M with a career stroke average of 74.33, which falls just shy of the Gophers’ career records book. With the wind being gusty for most of the day, scores were a little higher than normal. Seven players shot under par, including Hanson, Van Rooyen and Melhus. They included Moorhead’s Nick Olsgaard with a 68, Pat Deitz and Lukas Davison with a 69 and James Niles with a one-under par 70. Defending champion Todd Hillier will take his practice round tomorrow, since he doesn’t have to qualify, as the top 148 players and ties vying for the final 63 spots in match play. In Mid-Am Division action, Kent Fronk of Jamestown, N.D., won medalist honors with a 74-70-144, topping out Fargo’s Jay Olafson by one stroke. The field of 16 is set for the Mid-Am bracket. Chuck Renner of Phoenix, Ariz., who fired an impressive three-under par 68, earned the Super-Seniors’ medalist honor. The top 16 are also set to play for the Super-Seniors championship. Championship and Seniors qualifying continued this morning.

Fronk takes Mid-Am medalist laurels with a 144 Olafson back in the mix BY BRIAN WIERIMA

Jay Olafson of Fargo was one stroke away from being called “Mr. Mid-Am”. Olafson’s two-round, threeover par 145 was topped by one stroke by Kent Fronk of Jamestown, N.D., who shot a solid 74-70-144 for Mid-Am medalist honors. Olafson has found the newly-created Mid-Am division to his liking, after winning the inaugural tournament in 2009 and finishing as runner-up last year to Chad Niles of Oxbow, N.D. “Yeah, I was going for the medalist, since that’s the only thing I haven’t won yet in MidAm,” Olafson said. “I thought I played well, consistent. But I can’t slap myself for getting the No. 3 seed, I can’t be disappointed.” Fronk also has pulled fine success in the Mid-Am division, after playing to the championship round, before losing to, yes, Mr. Olafson. With Olafson seeing what the Mid-Am has brought the last two years, he’s liking the progress of it heading into its third one.

“It’s getting better,” Olafson said. “We lost some good golfers back to Championship, but we really do have some good golfers in it.” The Pine to Palm will feature another Olafson in match play, as Jay’s father, Terry, qualified for Super Seniors. So could it be an Olafson sweep? “That would certainly be fun,” Jay said. “You always play for the big prize.” Niles returns as the defending champ and didn’t have to qualify. He will open against No. 16 seed John Woxland. Brian Benson (150) and Donald Nelson (150) will square off in the same bracket, as well. In the next leg, Bill Schommer (146) will face George Strand (151), while last year’s medalist Duane Siverson (146) will golf against Chuck Wiger (151). On the bottom bracket, No. 2 Fronk faces Keith Aasen (152) and Craig Stein (149) will open against Thomas Solien (150). In the final four pairings, Olafson will tee up against Jon Anas (151) and Aaron Burnside (149) will be up against Paul Uithoven (151).

A Renner repeat

18th Long Drive Contest Tues. Aug 9th, 2011 Tee #11

The 2010 Super-Senior medalist does it again BY BRIAN WIERIMA

brianw@dlnewspapers.com

Chuck Renner made some history last year when he won first-ever Pine to Palm Super Senior medalist laurels after shooting a two-over par 73. This year, Renner made a little more history by one-upping himself by winning medalist honors once again, but this time with a three-under par 68. “I had such a bad start last year, but I recovered nicely,” Renner said of his first medalist honor. “This year, most everything was working well. I didn’t have any three putts, which if you avoid those here, you can position yourself well.” Renner made birdie on all the par fives on the front nine, while making birdie on holes 12 and 18 on the back nine. Renner’s success last year didn’t stop with winning medalist, as he played his way to the championship match, before losing to Detroit Lakes’

Paul Krueger. “Paul is a heck of a putter,” Renner said. “I fell down five with five holes to go and then won the next three. But you can’t let anyone get ahead of you by that much in match play.” Renner learned from his championship match, too, and will focus on night getting too far behind of his opponent. And that means stronger putting. Renner plays most of his summer golf in Hawley, where he has a season-best 63, after making an eagle and seven birdies in his round. He hopes to carry that kind of momentum, along with his second medalist win, into match play Thursday, where he will open up as the No. 1 seed, since Krueger had to withdraw due to work commitments. “I won’t take anything for granted in this sport,” Renner included. “Playing well (in golf) never comes often and when it does, it doesn’t stay

long.” Renner will open against No. 16 seed Tom Pederson of Eau Claire, Wisc., who shot an 82. Bill Blake of Detroit Lakes fired a three-over 74 for second-place and will face Owen Germundson of North Mankato who had an 81. In the upper bracket, Terry Olafson of Wadena (79) will place Ted Hatlen of DL (79), while Robert Harris of Boynton Beach, Fla. (75) is pitted against Ron Smet of Okeechobee, Fla. (80). Ron Smedshammer of Sun City, Ariz. (77) will open up against Larry Doeden of DL who had an 80. In bottom bracket action, Pete Lysaker of Ft. Myers, Fla. (78) faces Dr. Rick Render of Bloomington (79). The final two matches sees DL’s Tom Hanson (75) facing Thomas Wood (80) and Dick McConn of McLean, Virg. (77) playing James Wolff of Goodyear, Ariz. (79).

BIRCHMONT

Larson wins second Men’s Championship BY ERIC STROMGREN

Forum Communications Co.

There were only 14 golfers with multiple Men’s Championship titles heading into this week’s 87th Birchmont at Bemidji Town & Country Club. Johnny Larson of Clements, Minn. added his name to the list Saturday. The 2007 champion watched Matt Skarperud of Omaha, Neb. erase a threehole deficit in the middle of the match, but pulled his game together in a pressurepacked moment late and won the championship 2-up. “It’s always better the second time around,” said Larson, who played in his 18th career Birchmont this week. “I had a lot of support from my friends and family here, my dad was on the bag – the tournament was just really fun on and off the course this year.” Larson’s clutch shot came on the par-4 17th hole when Skarperud was threatening to square the match. After Larson hit his approach shot over the green, Skarperud followed with a smooth strike and was left with a 12-foot putt to the hole tucked in the back left corner of the green. Larson then failed to get his chip shot on the green and was left with another chip. He walked to the cup, pulled the pin and holed out the 20-foot shot to put pressure back on Skarperud. “I had a poor lie behind the green for the first shot because there was no grass where my ball was,” Larson said. “The second shot was an easy chip and I had a pretty good feeling about it. I just had to get it on a line.” Skarperud missed his birdie putt and needed some magic on the par-4 18th hole to continue the match. But his shot out of the greenside bunker left to a tight pin left a 35-foot par putt and he con-

I battled back to get it to even, but a couple missed opportunities down the stretch cost me.” Skarperud defeated his brother Chad of Grand Forks, N.D., 3 and 2 in a Saturday morning semifinal and Larson defeated Michael Slominski of Grand Forks 2 and 1 in the other semifinal to set up the championship match.

Larson took the lead on the par-4 first hole when Skarperud three-putted for bogey. He went 2-up with an eagle on the par-5 fourth hole and extended his lead to 3-up on the par-4 fifth hole with a par when Skarperud bogeyed. The fourth hole was one of Larson’s best of the match. He hit driver off the tee of the 500-yard hole, stuck a 6-iron to 10 feet and made the putt. Skarperud worked his way back into the match with birdies on the par-3 seventh and the par-5 ninth holes to

cut Larson’s lead to 1-up. The match was squared when Larson missed a six-foot par putt on the par-4 12th hole. “I was a little worried and a little frustrated,” Larson said. “When you have a threehole lead you want to put the pedal to the floor. The momentum switches like that and we had some see-saw battles.” Larson regained the lead on the par-3 14th hole by putting an eight iron to 10 feet for a two-putt par. Skarperud found a greenside bunker and left a 15-foot par putt

from the fringe inches short for a bogey. Skarperud fell behind two holes when an errant tee shot left into the hazard on the par 5 15th hole resulted in a par. Larson put two routine shots to the front collar and made an easy birdie. Larson had an opportunity to win the match on the par 4 16th hole. Both players hit strong approach shots close to the pin – Skarperud drained his seven-foot putt for birdie and Larson missed is 10-foot putt. When Larson grimaced at the first chip shot to not make the 17th green, it looked as though momentum was shifting again and his third extra holes match of the tournament was closing in. Instead Larson composed himself, found the shot to take away the pressure and walked off the 18th green a two-time champion. Like his 2007 championship run, Larson was the 36-hole qualifying medalist in this week’s tournament. He defeated Motley’s Michael Strain 6-and-5 in the first round, Bemidji’s Chase Jackson in 20 holes in the second round and Crookston’s Jake Sanders in 20 holes in the quarterfinal. “The first day everything went great for me but nothing was handed to me or easy after that,” Larson said. “It’s a mentally and physically draining tournament and I’m glad it’s over – in the right way.” “I’ll be coming back next year,” he said. There are 12 golfers who have won two Birchmont Men’s Championships and the last was Rick Passolt (2003, 05). There are no three time-winners. Russ Simenson (1987-89, 91), Jim Strandemo (1983, 90, 94, 96) and Phil Olson (1944, 45, 46, 56) are four-time winners.

BIRCHMONT

Roller captures third Women’s Championship BY PAT MILLER

Forum Communications Co.

Historically only a handful of women have been able to win back-to-back titles at the Birchmont. Rachel Roller accomplished that feat in 2009 and 2010 and the only other golfers to do it during the past 40 years are Julie Kalina-Jensen (1998-99), Jodi Krafka (1989-90), and Kate Hughes (1986-87). Since Julie Gumlia claimed four consecutive titles from 1972 to 1975 no one had managed to win three in a row. That string was broken Saturday as Roller defeated Jenny Palmiscno 5 and 3 for her third straight championship. “I didn’t try to think about winning a third straight championship. I didn’t want to think about anything that would add pressure,” Roller said. “My caddie (Alex Orr) has been on my bag all three

years and he steadies me when I need it.” Roller didn’t need much steadying Saturday. She dropped only the first hole and countered that with a par win on No. 2. She took the lead with a par on No. 6 and a birdie on No. 9 gave her a 2 up lead at the turn. On the back side she padded her cushion with a birdie win on No. 11 and a par victory on No. 12. When she bettered Palmiscno with a par on No. 15 the match was officially over. “If there is a secret (to winning three Birchmont titles) it’s hitting the fairways and the greens,” Roller said. “I actually kind of struggled much of the week but today I drove the ball well. The past two days were my best two rounds of the tournament. I felt comfortable.” After receiving a bye in the first round Roller’s ride to the crown began with a 1 up victory over Abby Knutson of

Grand Forks in the quarterfinals. Friday she defeated Elizabeth Strom of Fargo 5 and 4 and Saturday she capped her week with the win over Palmiscno. Palmiscno had four matches this week. She opened with an 8 and 7 victory over Cierra Waverek of Staples and stopped Alyssa Konecne of Bemidji 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals. In Friday’s semifinals Palmiscno nipped Missy Tabery of Wadena 1 up. Roller hopes to return next year and try to join Gumlia as the only women to win four straight Birchmonts. “I hope to be back next summer,” Roller said. “I enjoy coming here. It’s fun hanging out with the other golfers and it is a very enjoyable vacation. “If coming back next year is a possibility, I’ll be here,” she added.

BIRCHMONT

Nord, Sieberlich, Dale win division championships BY PAT MILLER

Bruce Nord of Grand Forks captured his first Birchmont championship Saturday as he defeated Rob Jacobson of Bemidji 5 and 4 for the Senior title.

Based on the qualifying scores Saturday’s Senior Championship final featured a pair of unlikely participants. Surviving through the upper bracket was Rob Jacobson of Bemidji who was the 13th seed in the 16-man field. The lower bracket representative was Bruce Nord of Grand Forks who had to survive a playoff just to make the championship cut. Saturday afternoon at the Bemidji Town & Country Club Nord continued his improbable climb through the Senior ranks and he capped his week at the Birchmont with a 5 and 4 decision over Jacobson. “Needless to say, I had to get past the best golfers in the field and somehow I did it,” Nord said. “After qualifying there were four men for three spots and I was one of the three who made it in. “But since we started match play I played very well. I didn’t make a double-bogey during any match and I managed to keep going with a bunch of pars.” Nord defeated third-seeded Bob Kobilka of Bemidji in the opening round and then knocked off 11th-seeded John McEnroe of Woodbury. In the semifinals Nord trimmed Rob Noren of Bemidji, the seventh seed, 4 and 3.

Jacobson began his run with a 2 up victory over No. 4 Patrick Wilhelmson of North Richland Hills, Texas. In the quarterfinals he ousted No. 12 David Freborg of Roseville and Friday he bounced the Senior medalist and top seed Tim Tingelstad 2 up. His luck ran out Saturday, however, as he couldn’t match Nord’s stellar play. “I played very steady golf and I seemed to get stronger as the week went on,” Nord said. “When I made a mistake I was able to cover. “I’ve been an off-andon Birchmont participant through the years but I’ve really never done anything significant until this week,” Nord continued. “I’m not a seasoned tournament veteran like many of the guys in the field but I was able to keep going. It’s an honor to play against guys like this and it’s a special honor to beat a few of them.” In 2007 and 2008 Jack Sieberlich of Rush City claimed the championship of the Senior division. A few years ago he reached the qualifying age for the Super Seniors, 65, and he decided to make the switch. That decision paid dividends Saturday as Sieberlich defeated defending Super Senior champion Jim Trapp of Tucson 3 up for the title. “There is no secret to winning a Birchmont champion-

ship,” Sieberlich said. “Any of the guys in the field can win it because there are so many talented golfers. But if you play well you have a chance. “This year I played good golf. I qualified with a good score (even-par 72 for medalist honors) and I had solid rounds in match play,” Sieberlich added. On Saturday Sieberlich continued his mastery over the golf course as he was 1-over par when the match ended. “This is a fun division to be in because I played many of these guys when we all were in the Senior division,” Sieberlich said. “Sooner or later we all get together again, this time as Super Seniors.” Trey Dale of Bemidji recovered from a shaky start to claim the Junior Championship crown with a 2 up win over Drew Gumlia of Tustin, Calif. Dale dropped the first hole after a bogey and Gumlia increased his lead to 3 up by winning No. 5 with a par and No. 8 with a birdie. Dale won No. 9 but Gumlia claimed No. 10 to remain 3 up. Dale, however, got hot at the right time. A birdie on No. 12 sliced his deficit to 2 down and consecutive birdies on No. 14, No. 15 and No. 16 gave him a 1 up lead. Both players parred No. 17 and Dale’s par on No. 18 iced the victory.

Ironman Golf Course produces future great golfers. We had 17 of them play in our annual Wee Tee tournament. It’s our 10th annual event, and records indicate this was our largest turnout. Great scores came from 5 girls and 12 boys. In the Girls division, Abby Longhenry shot an impressive 44 to come in first over McKenna Mallow.
