Lofberg says now that his lawn is all decked out and lit up, people have actually stopped on North Shore Drive to get out and look, perhaps mistaking it for a park or other public space. To maintain their privacy, Lofberg says they’re looking into putting up a row of trees along the road. “He wanted a spot where he could be at his home but also get away,” says Splonskowski, adding that he’s pleased with the project and hopes Lofberg is, as well — though he knows it isn’t done yet. “He’s already talking about tweaking some more things. I’m assuming it will keep moving on,” says Splonskowski. The landscaper says he’s had a lot of fun working on the project, and he’s happy to keep working on it, bringing Lofberg’s vision to life. “I’ve found, over the years, that the best ideas come from the homeowners… Kudos to them for coming up with the design,” says Splonskowski. WHY EVERYBODY NEEDS A HAMMOCK FOR THOSE DELICIOUS OUTDOOR NAPS
Who needs an excuse to catch up on missing sleep? If the time presents itself, the sun and the fresh air can induce a deep sense of relaxation. Lying on a hammock or floating in a hanging chair provides that additional soothing rocking motion that can make a cat nap even more enticing.
FOR INDOOR OR OUTDOOR RELAXATION
Everyone can appreciate the opportunity to sit back and relax. Hammocks and swinging chairs can help a person feel lighter than air and recharge in the warm summer weather. File Photo
Sunny days and warm weather beckon us to the great outdoors. A day spent in the lake or lounging around the patio is a great way to embrace the relaxing spirit of summer. But those who want to go the extra relaxing miles should consider adding a hammock or swinging chair to their backyard oasis. Hammocks and swinging chairs make great investments. Outdoor enthusiasts can take them on camping trips, and they’re equally at home right in the backyard. People on the fence about these symbols of relaxation can consider these benefits of hammocks or swinging chairs.
Relax.
We’ll take care of your lawn.
Create a retreat in any corner of your yard or home. A hanging chair can be hung in the corner of a bedroom to provide a spot to curl up with a good book or rock a baby to sleep. The same chair can be brought to a covered deck or patio so people can swing with the breeze when the weather allows.
FOR A SNUGGLY SPOT TO STARGAZE
Hammocks and swinging chairs can make it easier and more comfortable to stargaze at night. With a double hammock or chair, bring a romantic partner along to snuggle and watch the cosmos. Or teach children about the constellations in the night sky.
TO BE INCONSPICUOUS AMONG NATURE
Being suspended several inches above the ground in a chair or a hammock can help a person blend in with the natural environment. Birds, small animals and insects may not even know you’re there, and that can make them easier to observe.

ESTATE A sprawling Wymer Lake home has been transformed into a one-of-a-kind rental property designed with classic literature in mind BY MARIE JOHNSON
mtjohnson@dlnewspapers.com Marlys Jacobson, left, bought the Karinall Estate property with her late husband, Ken, in 1973, and they made extensive additions to what started as a much smaller home. It was at the suggestion of her friend and neighbor, Heather Ware, right, that she decided last year to turn the home into a rental property. Ware led the remodeling project, and now serves as the property manager for Karinall Estate. Marie Johnson / Summer Home

KARINALL ESTATE: CLIFFSNOTES VERSION
Every room in Karinall Estate is named and themed after a classic book, a design idea inspired by Ken and Marlys Jacobson’s years of teaching English. This room, modeled after “The Great Gatsby,” serves as a main living and entertainment room. It features a stone fireplace, piano, large flat-screen TV and antique furniture that came from a mansion in the Twin Cities. Submitted Photo
“I don’t think there’s any place like it in Minnesota.” -Property Manager Heather Ware
“The Hustler Room,” a game room with a pool table, designed with the book “The Hustler” in mind. “The Hustler” tells the story of a young pool hustler who challenges the legendary Minnesota Fats, “so there’s a little Minnesota flair there,” says Ware. Many of the property’s eight bedrooms are also upstairs, and they’re all themed after such famous classics as “Gone With the Wind,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” and “Alice In Wonderland,” and others. The six bathrooms range from “West Side Story” to “Mary Poppins” and beyond. On the lower level of the house, there’s a theatre room named after Shakespeare’s “The Globe Theatre,” a children’s play area inspired by Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” and a second living room with a library that contains floor-to-ceiling bookshelves full of books old and new. In all, there are 18 beds at Karinall Estate, and the property sleeps up to 24 people. The “Great Expectations” dining room can also accommodate 24. Every room in the house contains at least one copy of the book it is named after, and is marked outside the door by a handmade sign with the name of the room on it. The signs were made by Sharon Trieglaff Jons, Ware’s mom and fellow remodeling and interior design partner. Jons also made many of the window hangings in the house. Ware, Jons and almost everyone else who worked on the remodel is a friend, neighbor or associate of the property’s longtime owner, Marlys Jacobson, and many of them donated their time or talents for this labor of love. Jacobson and her late husband, Ken, have always been admired in the community for their kind hearts and generous nature. They bought Karinall Estate in 1973 and made it their family home for decades, raising not only their own five children there, but also fostering more than 50 troubled teenagers. Both of them enjoyed long careers in education at local schools, including teaching English courses, which served as the inspiration behind Karinall Estate’s literary design concept. When the Jacobsons first bought the house, it was about a third of the size it is today. Ken drafted the additions himself, creatively adding onto the home as he saw fit over the years, and he loved his creation.

The estate is known and loved by all the locals, as its longtime owners were respected educators and dedicated foster parents for decades, and the community came together to help remodel the estate to turn it into a rental property. It’s seated on the beautiful Wymer Lake, making it an ideal place for relaxation and recreation. After Ken passed away in 2017, Marlys decided the home was too big for just one person to live in, and put it up for sale. But soon after that, Ware proposed another idea — turning it into a rental home. Jacobson liked the thought, and agreed. “This house was made for people,” she says, though she admits that the remodeling project has been “a very, very big venture. It’s been scary and exciting.” With a limited budget to work with, and lots of updates and changes that needed to be made, Jacobson and Ware have been shopping and designing on a dime. Ware has been finding antiques and vintage furnishings at area thrift stores, and seeking volunteer help whenever possible. That help hasn’t been hard to find. Scores of local folks who know and love the Jacobsons, and even entire groups of people, like groups from Frazee-Vergas High School and the local Knights of Columbus, have stepped up to contribute to the remodeling project. People from the Catholic churches in Frazee and Callaway, where Marlys serves as church secretary, have been integral to the project. Marlys says if Ken could see it all today, “he’d just grin.” The remodeling process has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Ripping out decades-old carpeting, painting and redecorating every room in the house, and of course running Memorable details from the books (and their accompanying movies) that inspired design themes at Karinall Estate dot every room in the house. into all the usual snags that go along with remodeling an older home have caused setbacks and delays. Ware says they’ve replaced probably 7,500 feet of flooring, and have filled four dumpsters full of garbage. Then there was the fire over Memorial Day weekend. No one was in the home at the time, fortunately, and the fire was spotted and reported by a passerby in its early stages, so the damage could have been a lot worse, Ware says. Still, it ruined the main entryway and Jacobson’s apartment above that, requiring reconstruction of that whole area. A strong smoke smell permeated the entire house, which then needed professional restoration and cleaning, top to bottom. That meant taking apart and then reinstalling many of the decorations that had just been so One of the most unique features of Karinall Estate is the central atrium, which features a painstakingly put together, and replacing all waterfall, live fig trees, bistro tables and a complimentary coffee bar. THE DURANT ROOM For this bathroom remodel, interior designers Heather Ware and Sharon Trieglaff Jons took a literal page out of the Durants’ book. Dubbed “The Durant Room,” this main floor bathroom is themed around the works of husband-and-wife authors, Will and Ariel Durant. The Durants are best known for their collaborative, 11-volume series, “The Story of Civilization,” the tenth volume of which won them the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction in 1968. The couple was later presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Ware and Jons wallpapered this room themselves, using actual pages from books written by the Durants.
THE SECRET GARDEN
This aptly named room is, in fact, secret — it’s hidden behind a movable bookcase that pushes open like a door. The bookcase fits right in along the wall of an upstairs hallway, and if you didn’t know to push on it, you wouldn’t even know the room is there. Before it was transformed into a bedroom for Karinall Estate, the Jacobsons used the room for storage. Now fully remodeled to reflect its new “The Secret Garden” theme, this cozy little bedroom features floral decor and a built-in bedside table that looks like a tree swing hanging from the ceiling. “The Secret Garden” is a classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, published in 1911.
GONE WITH THE WIND This large family suite features all the opulence that one would expect with a “Gone With the Wind” theme: a king bed with ornately carved wooden head and footboards; decorative tables and dressers; long, deep green drapes with fancy rope accents; and antique lighting, gilded picture frames and other design touches that convey a sense of wealth and old-fashioned Southern charm. The king bed and some of the other furnishings in the suite came from a mansion in the Twin Cities area. “Gone With the Wind,” by Margaret Mitchell, is a classic love story, considered by many to be the greatest love story ever written, as well as one of the greatest Civil War sagas. Inside the “Gone With the Wind” suite is a full bathroom as well as a smaller bedroom with two single beds perfect for children. This room is themed after “The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe,” by C.S. Lewis, and has a built-in closet that’s been hand painted to look like the storied wardrobe, as well as lights that resemble the light post seen in the most recent film version. PAGE 14 | SUMMER HOME MAGAZINE 2019
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
THE TRAPP FAMILY SINGERS
This bedroom was the first room the interior designers completed after beginning the Karinall Estate remodeling project, and it’s a favorite of the property’s owner, Marlys Jacobson. Inspired by Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about a young girl’s awakening to prejudice in the Depression-era South, the “To Kill a Mockingbird” room features a ladder that hangs from the ceiling above the bed, decorated with lights, a white drape and a mockingbird theme. There’s also a bird-adorned chair in the corner of the room. Tucked inside this bedroom is a large closet that has been converted into a play space for kids, with a theme of “The Berenstain Bears” and a hand painted mural by local artist Kari Hardmeyer.
“The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” is a memoir by Maria Von Trapp that tells the real story behind the beloved musical, “The Sound of Music.” The book also serves as the inspiration behind an upstairs bedroom at Karinall Estate. The room has curtains just like the main character in the movie, Maria, has in her bedroom (which she ends up making into play clothes for the children she’s caring for) and a chandelier hanging over the bed. Designer Heather Ware said the room is intended to appear very upper-class, like a bedroom in the mansion that’s in the film might look.

A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN Another favorite of Karinall Estate owner Marlys Jacobson, the main bedroom of this family suite is decorated to reflect the themes of poverty and hope found in Betty Smith’s, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.” The room is well suited for families with small children, as it has a smaller bedroom inside of it, creatively decorated with an “Alice in Wonderland” theme. The shingles on the exterior “roof” of this attached room are from designer Heather Ware’s own house, and the murals were hand painted by local artist Kari Hardmeyer. There are two separate murals in this suite: one of a tree in the spirit of “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn,” and another inside the “Alice in Wonderland” room, featuring scenes and characters from the Disney film. There is also a bathroom attached to this suite, decorated with a “Mary Poppins” theme, complete with a full-sized antique bicycle and handcrafted hanging light fixture (made by Ware) that looks just like the umbrella Mary Poppins uses in the movie.

THE ANDREW CARNEGIE LIVING ROOM AND LIBRARY
This downstairs gathering and relaxation area has comfy seating for groups, a stone fireplace, views of the lake, and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves covered with reading materials. Given the scores of books in the room — which were painstakingly organized by a niece of owner Marlys Jacobson’s during the remodel — it’s appropriately named after Andrew Carnegie, a businessman and philanthropist who donated money to build more than 2,500 Carnegie libraries around the world between 1883 and 1929.
LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE
Fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s popular series of children’s novels will love the “Little House On The Prairie” room. With cabin-style plank wall coverings, handmade curtains that appear tattered, colorful quilts on the three Amish-made twin/full bunk beds, and old-fashioned oil lamps along with other period decor, this room is truly reminiscent of the pioneer days on the prairie. Designer Heather Ware says most people who’ve seen the house say this is their favorite room.
HORIZON ROOM Since the covers of Horizon art books always featured such eye-catching images, it only made sense to incorporate them directly into the design of the bedroom they inspired at Karinall Estate. Designer Heather Ware used about 50 of the book covers to create a colorful and artistic floor-to-ceiling backsplash behind the bed. The room also features built-in shelves lined with old books and magazines, as well as an antique typewriter. Horizon books, which were subtitled, “A Magazine of the Arts,” were originally published as bi-monthly hardbacks starting in 1958, and later became a more traditional softback magazine. GARDENING AND LAWN CARE TIPS
FROM THE MASTERS D
on’t worry if you’ve gotten a late start on your garden this year: Garden centers are still full of healthy, well-developed perennials and annuals — even vegetables — that are ready to transplant. With warmer air and soil temperatures, they should take right off and continue to grow well through the rest of the season. Once your garden is planted, remember to: ► Water early in the morning; this allows plant foliage to dry out before cool evenings, which may inhibit mildew. ► Do daily and weekly checks for insect and disease problems to control early. 001435512r1
Pine Mill Farm Furniture, Co.
► Raise cutting height of lawn mower to 3 inches. Mowing too short allows sun to damage grass crowns and dries roots more rapidly. ► Check outdoor containers and hanging baskets regularly to make sure the soil is moist. You’ll have to water daily or even more often in hot, dry weather. Frequent watering leeches fertilizer and nutrients through the soil, so plan to fertilize with water-soluble plant food every two weeks. ► Hoe, hoe, hoe! These tips are provided courtesy of the Becker County Master Gardeners program.

WANT TO BECOME A MASTER GARDENER?
M
BY VICKI GERDES

aster Gardeners are from all walks of life, and volunteer in their home counties on behalf of the University of Minnesota. They share gardening best practices with people in their communities to promote healthy landscapes, healthy foods and healthy lives. Master Gardeners complete a university-taught core course and contribute a certain number of volunteer hours teaching research-based horticulture practices in their communities. “The program has been going on here for almost 30 years,” says Linda Perrine, who has been the coordinator for the Master Gardener program in Becker County since its inception. She has also taken the course to become a Master Gardener, so she has an insider’s perspective on the process. “If people want to become a Master Gardener, they can do so in one of two ways — take the online course, or go take a class at the Arboretum in the Twin Cities,” she said. “They can call or email anytime, and I will send the information to them.” Perrine can be reached by phone at 218-846-7328, ext. 7105, or by email at perri015@umn.edu. You can also apply by contacting the Master Gardener State Office at mgweb@ umn.edu or 612-625-9864. Once you have the application in hand, the next step is to complete and submit it, along with the registration fee. “You have to be enrolled by Oct. 1,” Perrine said. “The courses start right after New Year’s Day in January.” As part of the application process, an online background check must also be completed. The cost of the Master Gardener Core Course is currently
PAGE 24 | SUMMER HOME MAGAZINE 2019
$320 per person, including $290 for the course plus $30 for the background check. The in-person classes at the Arboretum in Chaska begin in January and end in April, Perrine added, while the online courses can be done at the individual’s pace, but must be completed by mid-May. Both versions of the course include more than 48 hours of basic horticulture education, offered by Extension faculty from the University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University. Once the course is complete, the internship begins. “You must donate a certain number of volunteer hours back to the county where you signed up,” Perrine said. “The first year, it’s 50 hours, with another 25 volunteer hours, plus at least five hours of continuing education for each year thereafter.” In return for completing the 50 volunteer hours their first year, the newly fledged Master Gardener will have half of his or her registration fee paid by Becker County Extension, Perrine added. “We have so many things happening in the community right now that 50 hours won’t be hard to do,” she said. “Besides the gardening clinics, we have community education classes, the community gardens and children’s gardens at local schools, plus our annual plant sale and maintaining the walk by garden display at the county fair.” In addition, the Master Gardeners host a gardening segment on the local TV3 public access station known as Rambling Rose. “It’s on every day,” Perrine said. “They go out to people’s gardens throughout the area.” The interns work right alongside the certified Master Gardeners, gaining experience and knowledge along the way.

ick Johnson of Detroit Lakes has some unusual landscaping next to his front porch at 1127 Wilson Avenue — he has created a raised Hobbit Garden in homage to his favorite books. Johnson is a fan of both “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books by J.R.R. Tolkien, which feature a legendary world of hobbits, dwarves, elves and dragons. Johnson’s garden contains 15 to 20 mini, Hobbit-sized plants, mostly succulents and cactus plants, and about the

same number of fantastical miniature houses, castles, tree dwellings, bridges and other structures. There are also a half-dozen figurines, including Bilbo Baggins, a few of the dwarves from “The Hobbit,” and of course the dragon Smaug — the terror of Middle Earth. The terror of Johnson’s Hobbit Garden, however, is the occasional marauding rodent. “The squirrels are the bane of my existence,” he says. “They actually come in and start digging in it.” Sometimes he leaves their work untouched, because it seems to add some character to the garden. But then they’ll go too far and mess the place up. “They knocked down Baggins over there,” he says, wounded at the thought. But he says the baby robins in a nest above the garden are much more respectful — and less intrusive. Johnson built his raised garden in the spring of 2017, for several reasons. “I’ve been a big fan of ‘The Hobbit’,” he says, “and quite honestly, nothing seemed to grow here,” in the little garden near the house that he has lived in since 2000. He started out planning for a ground-level Hobbit Garden, until a friend suggested that some height would be helpful, saying, “Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to deal with if it was 3½ feet off the ground?” Johnson agreed, and used 2’x6’ deck lumber to build the garden platform. He filled it with about eight bags of garden soil. The platform itself is hidden by long pieces of pine bark. The dragon Smaug presides over the Hobbit Garden on Wilson Avenue “I always wanted to use bark,” he says, “but you can’t seem in Detroit Lakes. Vicki Gerdes / Summer Home

to get it at lumber yards.” He finally found some at an Amish-owned lumber yard in the Frazee area. He had to buy more than he needed, although it still didn’t cost much, and he ended up with about “20 times more bark than I needed,” he says. He donated the leftover bark boards to Jay’s Garden Boutique in Detroit Lakes, where he bought most of the decorative pieces for his Hobbit Garden. He built the lake first, and followed his instincts from
there. “The other pieces just fell into place,” Johnson says. But of all the colorful rocks, log stepping stones, and ornate pieces in the garden, his favorite is a small gazing ball. “I bought this for my mom many years ago,” he says. “Then she passed away.” Johnson says people are welcome to come and visit his Hobbit Garden anytime — it even lights up at night. Just don’t knock over Bilbo Baggins.
