“Shoreham seems to be a place where people keep coming back, no matter where they are.”
O
n any given summer day, you can probably find Jim and Mary Claire Bond sitting contently on their huge wrap-around porch; their two spaniel dogs sitting happily at their feet. Their house on 12725 West Lake Sallie Drive oozes history, and part of the contentment the Bonds feel stems from the fact that they saved their now beloved four bedroom, two bath home from possible demolition. The house undoubtedly has passers-by rubber-necking, as the sea-green, three-story piece of history looms
6

magnificently from its corner lot across from Lake Sallie. They say every house has a story, and this one is long and winding. “It started out as the lodge of a resort that operated between roughly 1902 to 1946, called the Park Hill Resort,” said Jim Bond, who says locals knew it as the “Nelson Resort” because of its owners, Charles and Betty Nelson. The Shoreham area, located in the southwest edge of Detroit Lakes, was once its own bustling village, mostly separated from the city. “People got here by taking a boat from Detroit Lakes,” explained Bond. Two of those people were Bond’s grandparents, Irene and Holger “Happy” Paulson, who bought a small, quaint cabin across from the Park Hill Resort in 1919. “Here is my grandmother on the boat over,” said Bond, pointing out a number of black and white photos on the wall of the cabin. 8

The pictures are still there because the Bonds now also own that cabin, which they can see from their front porch. “My parents bought it in 1946, so I have been coming here every summer since I was born — except maybe when I was in Vietnam and maybe a summer or two during college.” Bond, who grew up in Fargo, has fond memories of the cabin and the large resort lodge on the corner lot. “This was a fun place to be,” he said. In 1946, the resort closed its doors. The handful of cabins that belonged to the resort were sold off individually, and the lodge reopened as a restaurant. in a nursing home in Detroit Lakes) lived in the house, while serving meals on the porch. “My mother talked about how the Sunday chicken dinner was marvelous, and my brother remembers Thursday night was strawberry shortcake night,” said Bond. The restaurant lasted only two years before closing, and the house was then simply a home for the Maloneys until 1985. “They sold it to some people who apparently couldn’t make the payments, so HUD ended up owning it,” said Bond, “That’s when antique businessman Bill Gunderson bought it with intentions to restore it.” Gunderson died suddenly, and although Jim and Mary Claire made a move on it, ultimately it went to Gunderson’s nephew, who also had intentions of restoring it. “But I guess it ended up being more than he wanted to bite off, so a few years later, he called me up.” Finally, three years ago, the Bonds were able to buy the house, and the long-awaited process to bring it back to life began. The Bonds, who live in Bethesda, Md., during the winter months, hired local contractor Steve Hershberger to begin some serious TLC. “Researching the history of the house was fairly easy because there hadn’t been a whole lot of remodeling done on it,” said Hershberger. Over the next two years, Hershberger meticulously took the house apart, numbering every piece of wood as he went, and putting it back together, restored and original. The 1902 wood floors shined like a new penny, as did the pine trim and crown molding and fir doors. The windows in the iconic porch were replaced, but all the original framing was restored. Although Hershberger says the house itself was solid, he put in a new foundation as well as new electrical, septic, plumbing, radiant heat and central air. “After a while I started to be able to see what it was going to be, and it really became an effort of the heart,” said Hershberger. “We saw pictures of it from Maryland, but when we walked into it for the first time, our jaws just dropped,” said Bond. The house’s original woodwork now frames a

The couple’s fingerprints cover the historical building, as reminders of their lives together splash the rooms. Quilts, rugs, and wall decor tell the story of their time in Egypt, while decorative Norwegian boxes and handsculpted furniture from Mary Claire’s Norwegian ancestors pull it all together. Every furniture piece seems to double as a conversation piece, including the green wicker furniture, which sits invitingly on the porch. “We’re almost positive it’s from the old Shoreham hotel,” said Jim Bond, “We’re told it sat right out in front.”
14
The house, both new and old, historic and current, will be shown as part of the Lake Melissa-Sallie House Tour coming up in July. The tour will give others a chance to experience the house’s true beauty, which the Bonds get to live with on a daily basis. “I’m lucky,” said Bond, “Not too many people have a place that’s constant all their lives, but Shoreham seems to be a place where everybody keeps coming back, no matter where they are.” They both glanced out at the lake, as Mary Claire smiled, adding, “It’s something in the water.”

riving into the yard of Patrick Shannon and Helena Johnson’s home, anyone can see it’s a unique and inviting setting. Gardens and sculptures abound, as do creativity and imagination. Shannon and Johnson, who have lived at their rural Vergas home for years, decided to quit the craft show circuit and build their own gallery. Six years ago, they built Forest Edge Art Gallery, located about four miles west of Vergas. “We were selling our work in town at The Quiet Cricket and doing quite well,” Shannon said, adding that he had potentially always wanted to build a shop on the home property. “We have more business every year,” Johnson said. “Business is good. It has far exceeded our expectations.” Shannon, who works with metal, and Johnson, who paints and creates jewelry, have their work and about 20 other artists’ work on display in the gallery. Artists range from local to national. Shannon started out his art career in pottery, but about 15 years ago switched mediums to metal. “It’s not that I liked it better, it was just something different,” he said. And although he hasn’t worked with pottery in years, he did just purchase some clay to try his hand at it once again. His first metal piece was a kokopelli (a flute-playing fertility deity) made for a business, and it “just kind of evolved from there.” Known for his copper work, Shannon has expanded to stainless steel and other metals. “I like combining things,” he said. Shannon said a lot of his art comes from commissioned work, and he works about eight to 10 hours a day on his projects — that includes finding supplies and working with his customers.

Many times people come to him with an idea of what they would like and then he goes from there with design. Others show him a space in their business and simply ask him to fill it with one of his creations. Johnson got her start in painting and moved on to jewelry. She also works with copper, brass and sterling silver in her jewelry creations. “I do different colorations (in the jewelry) than most people, she said. She also works with precious metal clay, where she can shape a piece of jewelry to how she wants it, fire it in the kiln, and it comes out a TOP: Forest Edge Gallery is filled with pieces of art from artists throughout the United States. higher grade metal than sterling. She said during the winter, when the gallery isn’t open to the public, she tries to spend her days painting and creating jewelry, but in the summer she spends her time in the gallery. Everything in the gallery is made in America — “We really wanted to support American artists and craftsmen,” Johnson said — and they try to carry unique, different pieces. There is everything from paintings to photography to fused glass — and of course Shannon’s metal work and Johnson’s jewelry. The gallery is open Memorial Day to Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. From Labor Day to Dec. 18, it is open Saturdays and Sundays only. They
are closed for the winter. Though the two artists share a home and a gallery, they don’t share their project ideas as much. Shannon said he’ll ask Johnson what she thinks of a piece when he is finished, but they don’t necessarily consult each other for inspiration. Shannon said he doesn’t get inspiration from anything in particular — “things just evolve.” But, he always tries to better the piece he previously worked on, so maybe that’s his inspiration, or his drive anyway. He orders his copper from Rochester, N.Y., and enjoys finding scrap metal for projects. He said he rarely goes past Hartman Hide and Fur in Detroit Lakes without stopping to see what they have.

hen customers pull into the driveway bending around the 100-year-old home that now houses Dunton Locks Pottery, they can most likely expect to be greeted with a warm smile and beckoning wave from a woman sporting clay-covered jeans and a rolled up longsleeved shirt. Mary Laabs, an artist nestled in the woods near Lake Sallie, knows that when her inhouse buzzer goes off, someone has pulled up to the house and is most likely in the mood to browse through some pottery. For the past 15 years Laabs’ has spent much of her time crouched next to a potter’s wheel, watching her hands give life

“I don’t have anything planned when I start” to all kinds of unique clay formations. But for someone who has caught the attention of some the nation’s top art experts, Laabs modestly addresses her trade as nothing more than a relaxing hobby. “I’m lucky that I enjoy my work,” Laabs chuckled as she stepped inside the house and into her basement workshop, which houses three separate workstations meant to shape, dry and store pottery. “Life is good.” Laabs’ process of creating her pottery is fairly informal. She explained that most of her inspiration is drawn the moment she begins free handing clay patterns with her fingers. “I don’t have anything planned when I start,” Laabs said. Laabs also took an unconventional approach to learning the necessary techniques behind pottery. She said that one day, she just decided to do it. “I went out, bought a wheel, and taught myself how

to make pottery,â€? Laabs said. It was a simple approach to a master craft. Laabs soon realized that making pottery was something she wanted to do for years to come. The basement workshop may be where the real pottery magic happens, but Laabs said she moves all of her finished products into an upstairs show room, which overlooks a scenic line of manmade ponds outside the front of the house. As Laabs exited the downstairs workshop and made her way back up to the main show room, she pointed around at a number of her favorite pieces, which are neatly displayed on shelves lining three walls. from other artists because each of her creations is different than the next. None of Laabs’ pottery comes in a mass produced set. “It’s all one of a kind,” the potter said. Laabs said that she has lived in the Detroit Lakes area for 30 years, and it was only three years ago when she and her husband, Brad, purchased their 3-acre property. Brad works as a fishing guide around the Detroit Lakes area. Laabs said she and her husband feel that the natural beauty in the area surrounding their home correlates perfectly with the back woods

and lake country theme embedded in Dunton Locks Pottery. It is easy to see that it is not all business with Laabs. Her work often reminds her of her husband and two sons. So naturally, her inhouse tours often lead to pleasant conversation. In addition to working with pottery, Laabs also dabbles in caricatures and painting. She is often eager to give an impromptu tour of all her other artwork, which is neatly displayed throughout the rest of the house. Laabs said she sometimes gives pottery lessons, but only for small groups. “I’ll take a couple people at a time,” Laabs said. It is clear to see that the lakes area woman has a passion for what she does. One could easily say that she is a jack of many artistic trades.

here have already been some “blockbuster” movies released to theaters since the summer season officially began in May: Names such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Stranger Tides,” “Thor,” “X Men First Class,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Fast Five” and “The Hangover Part II” have been dominating box office ticket sales for several weeks now. But as is usually the case, the major studios

Independence Day (July 1). Shia Lebouf returns as Sam Witwicky, joined by Hugo Weaving as the voice of Megatron and Josh Duhamel as Lt. Col. William Lennox. Newcomers to the franchise include Tyrese Gibson, Patrick Dempsey and John Malkovich. Then, on July 15, the eighth and final installment in the popular “Harry Potter” series, “The Deathly Hallows Part 2,” lands on the big screen, to be followed five days later by “Another Earth” (July 20). July 22 will see another comic book hero land on the big screen with the release of “Captain America: The First Avenger,” with Chris Evans in the title role. The film with the weirdly wonderful title, “Cowboys & Aliens,” starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, follows close on its heels, July 29. Also on July 29, the family friendly, 3-D blend of CGI and live action, “The Smurfs,” comes to theaters, giving new life to the 1980s cartoon favorite. That release will be followed closely by another retro revival, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” on Aug. 5. A popular Disney franchise continues after a long hiatus on Aug. 19, with the release “Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World.” This time, former Spy Kids Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa Vega, Daryl Sabara) will appear in an advisory role, turning over the “Spy Kids” title to twins Rebecca and Cecil (Rowan Blanchard, Mason Cook). Also set for an Aug. 19 release is an updated version of “Conan the Barbarian,” with former “Stargate Atlantis” star Jason Momoa stepping into the title role first played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

tard. Cookies and milk. Salt and pepper. Dogs and kids. Hugs and kisses. Yep, some things just naturally go together and if you’ve got a vacation coming up, you’re going to want to take a good book with you, right? So look for these great reads coming up this summer…. MAY Already on shelves by Memorial Day, these books are definitely worth a look… Try The Last Gunfight by Jeff Guinn, a book about what really happened at the OK Corral. Grab Thank You Notes by Jimmy Fallon. Make your inner-scientist happy with The Believing Brain by Michael Shermer. Or look for the latest by Steve Martini, John Sanford, or Steve Berry. JUNE Okay, so you’ve got your beach towel and you’ve staked out a spot by the pool. Now you need a good book in your hands. How about The Kingdom: A Fargo Adventure by Clive Cussler with Grant Blackwood? Or maybe you’d 36
prefer the new Ann Patchett novel or the latest Laurell K. Hamilton? How about the latest by the late E. Lynn Harris, Summer Rental by Mary Kay Andrews, or Folly Beach by Dorothea Benton Frank? David Baldacci has a new book out, and Ann Brashares comes out with Sisterhood Everlasting. You’ll find a new James Rollins novel, a new Joseph Finder novel, a new release from Alexander McCall Smith, and a new Diana Palmer book. There are diet books, finance books, and more science books due out in June, which will give you plenty to do while you work on that tan. JULY Summer is just halfway over, but there are lots of great books left to read… Imagine the fireworks you’ll find in the new novel by Catherine Coulter! The new Meg Cabot book might be explosive. There’s a new Mary Janice Davidson due out in July, and a new Tess Gerritsen book. You’ll find Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner this month. Alex Kava is releasing a new Maggie O’Dell novel. Iris Johansen comes out with the latest in her popular series. There’s a new Anne Rivers Siddons novel for you this month, a new J.A. Jance novel, and a new Danielle Steel book. Singer Ricky Skaggs has a new biography out in July, and you’ll find a new Terry Goodkind release, plus one by Eric Van Lustbader. Summer living Magazine

IV). Karrine Steffans has a new book for lovers due out, Penn Jillette and Celia Rivenbark will each make you laugh, and former “Punky Brewster” star Soliel Moon Frye will release a new memoir/parenting book. There’s a new Simpsons book due from Matt Groening, a new Kathy Reichs mystery, more puzzle books, and another William Kent Krueger novel to finish your fabulous summer. Now remember: nothing is cast in stone and book titles can be changed or cancelled. Release dates are approximate. For final word, check with your bookseller or librarian. They get paid big bucks for knowing these things. And have a great summer’s reading! And if none of these are your cup of (iced) tea, there are dozens of new and varied puzzle books coming out for the summer.
AUGUST So you used up your vacation already? So what? You’ve got lots of summer yet to enjoy, so why not enjoy it with these books… Look for Retribution by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Find Cold Vengeance by Doug Preston and Lincoln Child, or the new C.J. Box release. Don’t miss the new release by money guru Clark Howard. Grab the new Ron Kessler book on the FBI. Sleuth out the newest by the Kardashians. Julie Garwood has a new book out this month too, and so does W.E.B. Griffin (with William E. Butterworth
