Experience to make Hornets better BY BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com
After a stormy season last year, the Frazee boys’ basketball team is looking to learn from the 2009-10 season for brighter skies this year. The key will be the experience the Hornets picked up last season, as well as some versatility on the team. Frazee will be able to go big with junior center Daniel Janu and senior Matt Brower, or small with some guards when both are out. “We are more experienced than in the past,” said Frazee head coach Jason Reierson. “Our front court is big and both of those guys can run the court well.” Frazee will be better in shooting, as well, with junior returners in Beau Hanson and Zack Ziegler back, along with senior guard Chris Burt. “Chris can shoot and have the ability to penetrate,” Reierson said. “We’ll try and get up and down the court, too,

lieves his players will work hard each and every night. “I think the HOL is the best conference in the state or at least close to it,” Reierson added. “We’ll just have to work hard, be competitive and see where we can go from there.”

Dance Team looks for continued success BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The success the Frazee Dance Team has experienced over the course of the last few years has built up a program to be on an elite level for many years to come — including this season. The Frazee high kick squad is looking for their first trip to the state meet, while the Jazz group has won the section meet the last two years in a row and has numerous trips to state. With only one senior returning in Katie Winter, the Frazee Jazz and High Kick teams will be counting on lots of underclassmen to contribute. But that shouldn’t be a problem, said head coach Ta Fett. “I have 28 girls returning from last year, which is a good feeling to have for a coach,” Fett said. “This means they loved the experience enough to do it again.” Fett added her incoming seventh

graders are “phenoms” and the three juniors — Elizabeth Anderson, Stephanie Anderson and Angie Wokasch — all have been to the state in Jazz every year since they were in seventh grade. “These (juniors) are wonderful leaders and really strong dancers,” Fett included. The strength will be the experience back, while the dancers will need to work on their confidence. “These girls need to manage the mind game of competition,” Fett said. “I have confidence that this will happen through competitions.” With 35 girls on varsity and JV Dance Teams, 27 will be on the High Kick squad, which is the biggest group thus far since Fett has been coach. “I also have 14 girls out of the 28 who are just on one team and are focused on either just Jazz or just High Kick,” the Frazee coach added. “I like that and I have total confidence in these girls.”

Young Hornets ready for next step Two seniors to lead Frazee team BY BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The anchors of the Frazee gymnastics team will come in the form of its lone two seniors — Jessica Irish and Emma Buhr. The Hornet senior duo doesn’t only bring the leadership needed for a young team, but plenty of experience. Irish has been in gymnastics since her elementary days, while Buhr started up in eighth grade. That should translate if some respectable scores for the two Hornets. “Both will be our all-around performers, because of their experience,” said Frazee head coach Amie Erickson. Irish’s strongest events are on the floor and bars, while Buhr’s is the beam and vault. With the majority of the team being very young, the main goal of Erickson’s is to compete in each meet with a full varsity lineup. “We’ll need an injury-free season,” the Frazee coach included. “Another goal is for all the girls to enjoy the season, because if they do, the effects will be shown. There is excitement of having a larger team, too, and having a JV team compete. “That’s good for the future.” Freshman Kirsten Tollefson started out in gymnastics last year and has shown good improvement.
Another freshman, Montana Osterman will try and build up her confidence. She will be a contributor on floor and will work on beam and bards, as well. Eighth grader Sam Riggles provides a hard-work ethic and is a “motivator” for the team. Eighth grader Jerica Totland has the natural ability to succeed in the sport, Erickson said. “She is a graceful performer and is showing good potential on beam and floor.” For many of the JV gymnasts, it will be their first season in competition. “That’s a huge accomplishment,” Erickson said. “All the JV gymnasts have been doing well in practice this season, too.”

DL gymnasts primed and ready to go BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The 2010-11 season has brought high expectations once again for the talented Detroit Lakes gymnastics team, as they will gear up for another run for the state meet. The Lakers bring back a load of experience, as well as a ton of momentum after last year’s outstanding season ended with DL’s first-ever individual state championship. Senior Amy Crawford clinched Laker history after winning the 200910 Class 1A state beam championship, after she scored a 9.55. Fellow senior teammate Bre Halbur also scored a medal in the state last year, after finishing second overall on the vault with a 9.675. Crawford also landed a fourth-place in the state on bars, while Jessica Stelter was fourth on floor. Although the Lakers will return the majority of the team and have a familiar look, there is a new look at the head coaching position — sort of. Steve Zamzo takes over the head coaching duties from Jenny Whipple, who headed the Lakers the last two years. Zamzo was a DL assistant in 2006 and 2007, so he is familiar with what the Lakers are bringing back. “I was coaching when Amy and Bre were in seventh and eighth grade, Zamzo added. “My one goal is to come
in and not screw anything up. Zamzo can rely on his two seniors, who have been anchors on the team for the last four to five years. Crawford and Halbur each have extensive experience and both will cover all-around duties this season, as well. “Amy has done all-around in the past and Bre is now all rested up after taking a break in the fall, Zamzo said. Juniors Stelter also returns with experience, along with great success, while sophomore Abby Einerson returns after a solid season last year, along with Claire Nelmark. “We also have a slew of seventh and eighth graders who can contribute, including Olivia Mann, Madeline Hoffert and Jordan Peterson, Zamzo said. Junior Natalie Hoffert was lost for the season in the first meet with a broken leg, which is a big loss. That will give the Lakers a more than formidable junior varsity, which has outscored varsity opponents in the past. The Lakers have done well individually in the state over the course of the last several years, but their ultimate goal has been to make it as a team. That goal, of course, has been hindered by the current gymnastics dynasty of the Perham Yellowjackets, who are in DL’s section and the owner of a seven-year state championship streak. “The girls’ goal is to make it to state as a team and not just make state, but

be the best, as well, Zamzo said. “They have been one of the best teams in the state over the last few years, but unfortunately, they’ve been in the same section as Perham, who has been the top team in the state. “The section meet has been tougher than the state would have been. The one event which has tilted the scales towards Perham has been beam — ironically the same event Crawford won the state in. “They have a lot more confidence on beam now, Zamzo said. “That’s what
they’ve been working on, having lots of beam time. The Lakers will see Perham four times this season, including the Section 8-1A meet, which will be hosted by DL Feb. 19.

Good defense is based on hard work and hustle in basketball, so with that in mind, Detroit Lakes head basketball coach Robb Flint is expecting his players to be working hard this season. “Our main goal this year is to defend people,” Flint said. “Defense comes down to hard work and determination. We need to get better defensively, we need to get after our opponents.” The Lakers will return the bulk of their scoring, which averaged 63 points a game. “If we can average that many points a game and if we can play good defense, we can win a lot of games,” Flint included. The Lakers (12-15 last year) will be stout in the frontcourt and will bring back good experience in the backcourt, as well. Senior Josh Stalberger returns as three-year starter and leading the team in scoring in 2009-10 with 331 points. The DL forward is also getting more physical in the lane, while polishing up his perimeter shooting. “Josh will be one of the top players in the conference and he’s getting used to contact,” Flint said. “He has improved his perimeter shooting and is better dribbling the ball out. He’ll be a hard player to guard.” The other forward position has plenty of muscle and hustle, as well,
with senior Jon Gilson having a good preseason in place of junior Brian Labat, who has been out with an illness. Both do bring a strong rebounding presence, while Labat was an offensive threat with 195 points in 2009-10. “Jon has been doing well this early part of the season and has worked extremely hard,” Flint said. “He provides very good leadership on the floor. Brian (Labat) is a physical presence in the middle for us, but we’ll have to get him in shape after he has missed practice with pneumonia.” Another question mark due to health will be junior Joe Mollberg, who has missed practice due to the same ailment he suffered from last year. Mollberg still scored 179 points last year, even though he missed a sizable amount of time due to his health ailments. “We hope we can keep Joe on the floor,” Flint added. The Laker guard play is also more stable this year, after the majority of their guards gained extensive floor time last season. Running the show will be senior Connor Hedstrom at point guard, who notched 220 points as a junior, along with 126 assists. “He’s a smart basketball player, who makes good decisions,” Flint said. “We need Connor to just get the ball in our scorers’ hands and he is a very unselfish player.” At the shooting guard position, se-
nior Connor McLeod returns after a solid junior campaign with 202 points, which included 25 three-pointers and 50 rebounds. “Connor was our best defensive player last year and he’s athletic and quick,” Flint said. “He takes care of the ball and hits his open shots.” Junior Rick Hutchinson will also provide a good spark at the guard position, after he led all guards in rebounding last season. His athleticism will be a big asset for the Lakers, which includes a sharp outside shot. “We have other guys in the mix after those seven, so I think we’ll be deeper than most teams this year,” Flint included. The first goal for the Lakers is to win the Mid-State Conference, in which Pequot Lakes will enter as the favorites, after they return the majority of their players from last year’s talented squad.

DL will have a good preview of where they stack up in the conference Dec. 14, when they travel to Pequot Lakes. The Section 8-3A favorites will be St. Cloud Apollo and Bemidji, who return both of their dangerous guard tandem.

Seasoned Lakers ready to improve DL looking to limit turnovers this season BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There were plenty of bumps during last year’s 5-21 season for the Detroit Lakes girls’ basketball team, but ultimately, they could make the Lakers a better team this time around. Plenty of experience was gained by the Lakers, as they return the good majority of last year’s squad, including their top four scorers. “The girls gained a ton of court time last year and I hope it carries over into this year,” said DL head coach Mike Hoganson. “I’m hoping that experience also increases their confidence on the court.” Senior post Jen Matter returns as DL’s leading scorer from a year ago with 322 points, while junior guard Kayli Muckenhirn is back after notching 298 points. The biggest improvement, though, will have to come in the turnover ratio, where the Lakers struggled mightily with a 242-to-513 ratio for a negative 271 mark. “Turnovers were a big problem last year,” Hoganson said. “But we’ll see significant progress in that area.” Running the offense will be a twoheaded point guard rotation between senior Rachel Shane and junior Courtney Hedstrom. Both had strong offseasons, Hoganson added. “Courtney really came on strong towards the end of last year,” the DL coach said. “She brings a little more offense and can hit the outside shot, while being able to penetrate and run an up-tempo offense. “Rachel is a good senior leader and brings a calming effect to the team, when things are getting critical.” With a strong offseason in general for the Lakers, running an effective transition game will come about, as well. Muckenhirn is a good scorer, while being able to take the ball to the hole. The frontcourt will also be able to run, with Matter and junior Courtney Gray (229 points) creating mismatches.

Lydia Kotschevar also is experienced at the post position, along with freshman Trisa Hutchinson, who brings a rebounding mentality. “Trisa will do the dirty work, she’s a tough defender and can rebound,” Hoganson said. With that kind of depth back, it will allow the Lakers to throw some more full-court pressure, something they couldn’t last year. Also with a tall frontcourt of Matter, Gray and Tschider, the transition
“We’ll have the height advantage on most teams.” DL head coach Mike Hoganson “Jen can put the ball in the hole and has nice moves and can shoot from 15-feet out,” Hoganson said. “She is a good inside-outside threat. Courtney Gray is one of the more talented posts I’ve ever coached. If she can step up her physical game, she will be very valuable on the block for us.” Senior Taylor Tschider is returning after suffering two knee injuries the

game can be ignited. “We’ll have the height advantage on most teams,” the DL coach said. Defensively, the team will be coached by assistant and former Frazee head girls’ basketball coach Tim Swenson, who replaces defensive coach Aaron Swenson. “He’s a man-to-man type of defensive coach and we’ll be able to mix it up some with zone,” Hoganson said. “Overall, with the experience back, we do have higher expectations and winning the Mid-State Conference is a prevalent goal by the girls.”

Both will see action, along with eighth grader Veronica Badurek coming up through the youth ranks. “Each of (Roy and Moore) have shown improvement just through their maturity,” Malone said.

Even though the Detroit Lakes girls’ hockey team suffered through a 6-20-1 record during the 2009-10 season, dividends from last year might be paying off for 2010-11. The vast majority of the team is back, after losing two seniors off of last year’s young squad. Even though the Lakers are still quite youthful, they will be bringing in plenty of seasoning. “Basically, the whole team is back and it was a team which put up some solid points last year,” said DL head coach Dan Maloney. “We return all of our points leaders, so I am expecting to see more goals this season.” Improvement was also seen on last year’s squad, and that trend will hopefully continue through the 2010-11 schedule. All three first line members are back in junior Brianna Seebold and sophomores Callie Johnson and Emily Payne. The trio played the majority of minutes as DL’s first line last year, so the continuity will be a strength. “It’s nice having your first line playing a full year together,” Maloney said. “They have improved skillwise and hopefully they will pick up where they left off last year, that should help create a better attack.” The second and third lines will be in flux a little to start the season, as Maloney had to put regular second-liner, senior Shannon Utecht back on defense. Senior Hayley Maloney returns, along with senior Brita Johnson and freshman Sydney Haman to man the second line, while junior Ashley Friesen and sophomore Molly Hill will see playing time there as well. There is a host of returners, who either played some varsity or junior varsity last year, competing for ice time. Those include junior Lauren Sinclair, Annikka Anderson, Alexis Fritz, Teresa Wheeler, Emily Seebold, Caitlyn Murphy, Savanna Noles, Emily Gavle, Madison Gjersvig and Kirsten Anderson. DL boys’ hockey out to prove something BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
Three words can sum up the Detroit Lakes boys’ hockey team’s attitude heading into the 2010-11 season — “Something to prove.” After losing a combined 146 points with the losses of Minnesota’s leading scorer Tanner Lane and Alex Phelps, there is some doubt DL can recover those types of points. “The kids definitely feel they have something to prove and they want to silence the critics,” said DL head coach Chris Denardo. “They are motivated to be good and quiet everyone up.” Phelps graduated and Lane has moved onto to play junior hockey with the Fargo Force this year, but DL’s shelves are not bare by any means. In fact, the Lakers maybe more balanced than last year’s team. “I think our depth will be a strength this year,” Denardo said. “We do have a lot of new players, but we will have three lines who can do some damage this year.” Denardo isn’t labeling any lines as his first, second or third, because he believes the team will not lose any scoring punch no matter who’s out on the ice. “All three lines will get a chance to start a game,” Denardo said. “We won’t have an exclusive first line.” On one of those lines, the Lakers return some potent scorers in senior Nate Baker (22 goals, 22 assists in 200910), junior Alex Mason (10-13) and Slovakian foreign exchange student Frantisek Jung. “Frantisek will bring his wide-open
European style of play,” Denardo said. The line of senior Andy Schupp (169), Ryan Berg (2-11) and Kirby Inderrieden (3-2) will also make up a formidable line. “We have two No. 1 lines who can score,” Denardo added. Depth is shown on the other two lines, as Ryan Lindquist, Austin Rusness, Kyle Herrmann and Cody Olson will rotate. The fourth line will consist of Taylor Magnuson, Austin Starkey, Connor Collins and Nick LeTourneau — who hails from New York Mills and played for Wadena-Deer Creek last year, but has a one-year variance from the MSHSL to play for DL, since W-DC has to travel to Long Prairie for practices and games. The defense is experienced with three-year starters in Alex Deconcini and Ethan Brekke returning, with Derek Brehm coming in after seeing some ice time last season, along with Zach Saunders. “All are fairly good-sized defensemen and can play physical,” Denardo said. “They also do bring an offensive style, as well.” The goalie position will be inexperienced, as Blake Murphy returns after seeing limited action last year. Mike Brunner will also find time between the pipes for the Lakers. “Mike saw good ice time on junior varsity last year and Blake has played in a few games now on varsity,” Denardo said. “It will be important to get some good confidence under them and keep their focus.” The team speed will also be a

strength, which will lead to some aggressive style of play. “We’re going to focus on the little things, like crashing the net and picking up some rebound goals,” the DL coach said. “We’ll have a crash and bang style of play.” But DL has another advantage, in that some teams maybe overlooking them because they are now without Lane. “Some teams may see us as being down and licking their chops when they face us,” Denardo said. “But there is a fire in the guys and they want to prove everyone wrong. I think we’ll be a stronger team overall, because we don’t have that one player to rely on to score for us. “Everyone will have to step it up.”

DL’s schedule is also tougher, with games against perennial powers Virginia and International Falls and also a unique outdoor game on Hockey Day in Minnesota Saturday, Feb. 12. The Lakers will host Morris Area on the new People’s Park Outdoor Rink, starting at 3 p.m. “I think it will be a hit,” Denardo said of the outdoor game. “The rink is regulation and it will be a fun time. The kids will have a good time with it.”

Laker dancers looking to build on last year BY BRIAN WIERIMA

After breaking through to the state meet last year for the first time, the Detroit Lakes dance team is looking to build on that momentum this time around. But the Lakers will have to do it without five key members, who graduated after the 2010 season. Nevertheless, DL head coach Ronita Hackel is confident the team’s depth will show through this season. “We lost five good seniors last year and our assistant coach, along with her sophomore daughter, which makes it tough,” Hackel said. “But the numbers are great. We were able to add a junior varsity team of 20 dancers to our varsity team of 17 dancers. With only one senior, that leaves us with quite a few underclassmen.” Although there is much change from this year’s squad to last season’s, the same work ethic remains. “We are lucky enough to have hard workers with some good technique,” Hackel included. “Our upperclassmen are coming in with a lot of technical skills with leaps and turns, which will help us.” The Lakers will be led by senior Katelyn Caulfield and junior Katherine Lembke, as well as six juniors, including Elise Montplaisir, Emma Erholtz, Mariah Buschette, Mariah Miller, Lindsay Vonruden and Rikki Hemstad.

“Last year’s squad was very competitive driven, where this year’s team is much more focused on challenging themselves to try new things,” Hackel said. “Our goal each year is always to exceed our scores from the previous season and make sure we are always improving. “We were thankful to make it to the state tournament last year and would

Deep Lakers ready to make some noise BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
Not only will the Detroit Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team enter the season with their biggest numbers in quite some time, but they will with some of the most experience they’ve had in years, as well. The Lakers will be balanced, having both some top-heavy talents, as well as valuable depth which will be spread out in every event.
“The kids have some big goals this year.” DL head coach Rian Heimark All that spells some high expectations by the Lakers. “The kids have some big goals this year,” said DL head swimming coach Rian Heimark. “They have set their goals high and we want to keep them high. We return 24 out of 26 of our swimmers and divers from last year and have 33 kids out. “We have a good number of veteran swimmers and divers, while our new guys are already fitting right in.” DL returns two veteran state per-
formers in senior Jon Melgaard and junior Quillan Oak, who were named co-captains for the season. Oak is a two-time state runner-up in the breaststroke, while Melgaard is a multiple state diver, who finished fifth in last year’s Class 1A state meet. They will be joined by several other 2009-10 state qualifiers in junior Brandon Olson — who made it in the 500 freestyle — senior Justin George in diving. Cody Okeson and junior Travis King joined Olson and Oak to form the state-qualifying 200-yard medley relay from last year. “We are not lacking in leadership,” Heimark included. The depth of DL will also allow Heimark to mix and match Lakers in each event and have to make the tough choices of who to swim in what event. “That’s a good problem to have,” Heimark said of the depth. “It’s one I’ve never had before.” There is also a host of good seasoned swimmers who are returning, thus giving DL those valuable second and third-place finishes. Senior Brady Eilertson and Aaron Colby have been contributors for multiple years on varsity, while juniors King and Cody Johnson have plenty of
experience, as well. Sophomores expected to contribute points include Carter Krengel, Brady Otto and Okeson. But there are just a host of other swimmers and divers who will be invaluable throughout the season, Heimark said. “We have at least five kids out in every grade, except seventh grade, and that’s key,” Heimark stated. “We will have four full relays in each meet and swimmers who can take those second through fourth-place finishes.”

The Lakers will be looking to defend their 2009-10 Mid-State Conference championship and will vie for a Section True Team title, as well. “Making it down to the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center for the state True Team meet would be so beneficial for this program,” Heimark said.

DL skiers have depth and talent this year BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
If last year was a launching point for the Detroit Lakes boys’ and girls’ Nordic skiing teams, this season should be full bore ahead. After sending each of junior Jake Richards, senior Dylan RamstadSkoyles and freshman Berit Ramstad-Skoyles to the Class 1A state meet last year, both Laker teams are as deep as they ever have been — both in top-heavy talent and also in solid role skiers. “Just with the experience we have returning, we have some higher expectations,” said DL head coach Dan Josephson. “We are excited about our depth and numbers
meet at a time and the goal is to win a regular season meet,” Josephson said. “There are some inner-team rivalries, which helps pushes the kids to do better. “In the past, we struggled to put a full varsity team out there (for boys and girls), but now, it’s a struggle to decide who to put out there for meets. “It’s a good problem to have.” The Laker boys have each of Richards and Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles to lead the way, with a bevy of others also improving and climbing up the ranks. Those who will be varsity contributors include juniors Stephen Sinclair, Jack Harris, Devin Lange, sophomores Montana Johnson, Austin Clem and Ian Fritz. “All are experienced and will help the team out,” Josephson said. “They all can push Dylan and Jake if they are slacking, at all.” Each of Richards and Ramstad-Skoyles still can improve off of last year’s state runs. Richards will be the defending Section 8-1A champion and is coming off a stellar mountain biking season, while Ramstad-Skoyles is recovering from a hamstring injury from the cross-country season. “Dylan is pretty motivated and
“We are excited about our depth and numbers out.” DL head coach Dan Josephson out. We are excited about the possibilities this year can bring.” There is legitimate reason for the Lakers to be excited, as well. After sending a school record amount of skiers to state last year, and with all returning for another run, each team is filled with more than capable competitors to aid team success — not just individual success. “The kids are going to take it one

She will be joined by seniors Shannon Goetz, Joelle Langworthy, junior Celeste Koppe, sopho-

Laker grapplers to build through season Detroit Lakes’ eight seniors will be the key to 2010-11 success BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be eight seniors on the Detroit Lakes wrestling team and it will be a core group who will have to lead the Lakers into the 2010-11 season. “Our senior leadership will be the number one key to our season,” said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. “The second key will be the development of our younger wrestlers. If we get some strong leadership out of our seniors and if our younger wrestlers develop through the season, we can have a
“Our senior leadership will be the number one key to our season.” Laker head coach Rob Ullyott good team.” Six of those seniors have seen extensive varsity mat time, which includes Mike Bellefeuille, Tony Sims, Justin Tweeton, Bryce Dutton, Josh Eggebraaten and Jordon Jones. Each of seniors Melissa Paakh and Brooke Hunter are first-year wrestlers on the team. For Bellefeuille — who will wrestle in the 119-125 pound range — has a couple of potential milestones he can reach this season, including a potential trip to state after he finished third in the 2009-10 section tournament. He also is within reach of his 100th career win, as well, after going 31-10 last season. “Mike has the most experience of all our kids and we are expecting a lot of leadership from him,” Ullyott said. Sims (11-9 in 2009-10) was also a section placewinner last season, after missing significant time to injury, and will be counted on as a leader and contributor at the 125-130 slots. Overall, the Lakers’ experience is
scattered throughout the lineup, with good veterans and up-and-coming youth. “It’s a good thing we do have returners all over the lineup,” the DL coach said. “Probably our biggest question mark will be at our heavyweight position, where we don’t have an established wrestler, yet.” The Lakers do have an established grappler to kickoff meets in junior 103-pounder Gabe Foltz (28-13 in 200910), who is a two-year starter with MidState All-Conference laurels. Other 103-pounders who may see time include eighth graders Tyler Bellefeuille and Bronson Spies. At the 112-119 slots, eighth grader Nate Francis, Luke Payne and sophomore Zach Baker. Bellefeuille and sophomore Austin Soyring will hold down the 119-125 divisions, while Sims will anchor 125-130. A breakout candidate at 135140, who had a solid varsity debut last year, will be eighth grader Parker Jackson, who racked up a 20-15 record on varsity as a seventh grader. “Parker was very successful as a young wrestler last year, but we really want to be careful and not put too much pressure on our young wrestlers,” Ullyott said. “He did put in his time over the offseason, too.” Freshman Brandon Darhring will also contribute at the 135-140 divisions, as well. The 145-152 weight classes will have plenty of competition, as five wrestlers can see time, including freshman Jarrett Nosal, junior Travis Kienitz, Tweeton, sophomore Justin Reineccius and Eggebraaten. “We are also pretty short in experience at 160, while Jordan Jones will anchor the 171 slot,” Ullyott said. In the heavier weights, Dutton and junior Ben Gailfus will wrestle at 189 and 215, while the heavyweight slot is currently open. “We also have a lot of other wrestlers competing for the spots,” the DL coach included. With expectations depending on
the development of the team, goals for the Lakers will come as they progress through the season. “I don’t know where we are at, but I do know we have good potential and a good, hard-working group,” Ullyott
said. “One of our goals is to be a top four team in the section.” The section favorites will be Thief River Falls, with Staples-Motley and Fergus Falls other contenders.

LP-A boys building from the ground up BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
With the mass exodus of 10 seniors from last year’s team, the Lake ParkAudubon boys’ basketball team will have plenty of unknowns heading into the 2010-11 campaign. The lone senior back for the Raiders is guard Mitch Knudsvig, who will fill the big void of the leadership role. “Mitch was the only player who had a varsity uniform last year,” said LP-A head coach Luke Isaacson. “Also another thing which is much different, is our size. We don’t have those big posts anymore, but instead, basically a team full of guards.” The Raiders’ size will dictate how they will attack opposing defenses, which will be based on running the floor effectively. A good transition game is based on defensive rebounding, so it’s a concern of Isaacson’s heading into the season. “Rebounding will need to be the key point where we take the most pride in,” the LP-A coach said. With the team full of 5-10 players, perimeter shooting will be important, as

The athletic junior forward Chase Zeller will be LP-A’s mid-range shooter and will be the team’s presence in the middle. Other LP-A players who will see floor time, includes juniors Adrian Bailey and Beau Svobodny. “We’re not really deep because we are so young,” Isaacson said. “I’ll be playing maybe eight to nine kids and see where we are.” Patience will be the Raiders’ virtue, as the team will need to progress through the season, since they are so

green. “This team has always played together, so the chemistry is there,” Isaacson said. “That meshing period some teams need to go through shouldn’t be a problem with this group. “I see this team improving leaps and bounds by the time the playoffs roll around.”
The Raiders will also be playing in the Pine to Prairie Conference against schools more their size, instead of the bigger school Heart O’Lakes Conference. “We are excited to see different teams and we will be playing a lot of our sub-sections teams, as well,” Isaacson said.

Defense will be the key to the Lake Park-Audubon girls’ basketball success this season, along with a fast-pace
“We will look to push the ball and defense will be key to that.” LP-A head coach Tiffany Christiansen tempo, as the Raiders start playing in the Pine to Prairie Conference. First-year head coach Tiffany Christiansen employs a defensive heavy philosophy, along with an up-tempo pace to create the high-percentage shots in the transition game. “We will look to push the ball and defense will be key to that,” Christiansen said. “Communication is also

big, so the girls will be doing a lot of talking on the floor. They’ll be putting pressure on the ball and play a control defense.” The Raiders are guard heavy, so rebounding will come down to hustle and effective boxing out techniques, which in turn, will lead to a transition game. LP-A also has its go-to player in junior Andrea Knudsvig, who is a three-year starter in the backcourt. “Andrea has the ability to take the ball to the bucket and we can go to her during the crucial moments,” Christiansen said. There will be two seniors who will take on the leadership roles in guard Ashley Thompson and Chelsea Raaen, who will anchor the frontcourt at center.
Freshman Bailee Bartunek will also see action in the middle at center, while sophomore Emma Ulmer will help out at guard. “We can’t be afraid to take the ball to the bucket,” Christiansen said. “Our guards will be looked upon to score and pass and hopefully draw some fouls when they are driving.” The big goal of the team is to “play as one”, while leaving “it all on the
court.” Christiansen hopes to be near the top of the conference, as she learns the skills and talents of her players. “If we can stay in the mid or top of the conference all season, I’ll be 100-percent happy,” the LP-A coach said. Assistant coaches include Mike Hall and Mary Kvebak.

Badgers keep building up BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The building of the Lake ParkAudubon/Hawley wrestling team continues, as it is progressing quite nicely under head coach Travis Nagel. Both state qualifiers return to the United Cass Becker Badger team, to lead a much-improved squad into the 2010-11 season. Although the numbers are still a little low, Nagel is expecting more than several of his wrestlers to be contenders in every meet this season and hopefully by the end of it, fighting for a spot in state. “I’ve been seeing some huge improvement on the team,” Nagel said. “We will look to improve every week. It already looks like our experienced wrestlers have picked up where they left off last year.” Two of the Badgers hope to end this season where they did last year, as freshman Mason Swegarden and senior Sam Klingfus earned state berths. Although both went 0-1 in the state meet — Swegarden at 103 pounds and Klingfus at 119 — both are back better and hungrier. Swegarden has moved up to 119, while Klingfus will wrestle at 125 or 130. “Both of those guys should be top two in our section,” Nagel added. But it doesn’t end there for the Badgers, as they bring in several other top talents. Senior Derek Braseth was on the
bubble last year in the section tournament, finishing fifth in the 152 division. He will take on the 160 duties this year, while senior Brandon Bencker will wrestle at 152. Senior Robert Wallace will fill the 135 slot and brings a hard-nosed worker mentality. UCB will be short two weights, potentially at 112 and 189, while the team has 18 wrestlers out this year. “Of course we want more out, but it’s headed in the right direction,” Nagel said. “I have 18 fully committed wrestlers, which is what I want, rather than 25 who are not committed.” Other UCB wrestlers who will see varsity mat time include juniors Logan Gage at 125, Wyatt Wixo at 145 and Elijah Beaudine at 140.

“Most of these guys have been wrestling the full six years I’ve been here, so we do have some good experience, while the rest are untested,” Nagel said. The Badger’s schedule has also been strengthened, with a big meet in the Big Bear Tournament at Cass LakeBena and duel meets against usual stalwarts Barnesville, Perham and Detroit Lakes. With the co-op between LP-A and Hawley, they wrestle in the Section 8-2A meet. “In the past, these teams would have never wanted to wrestle us, so that shows the improvement we’ve seen the last few seasons,” Nagel said.
