Roger Remington’s ex Schedule

Dialogues in Design was a dynamic experience as evidenced by these schedule sheets which were dutifully carried in Roger Remington’s pocket throughout the workshop. The interaction between the demands of the master designers, Massimo Vignelli and Armando Milani with Roger Remington and Cynthia Milani, who worked as facilitators, was often a vigorous process as the days progressed. The goal was to create effective solutions to the graphic design project as well as to enjoy the beauty of Provence.

4

Settings Workshop Setting The Moulin

The workshop was conducted in a beautiful setting, the studio of Italian designer Armando Milani in Le Rouret, near Nice on the French Riviera. The area, Provence/Côte d’Azur, is nestled between the sea and the mountains, and is known the world over for its natural beauty. Located in the heart of this gentle and lush vegetation, is Milani’s home and studio, Les Moulin des Trois Arcs which was a former olive mill from the 1500s. Participants were able to reflect and exchange ideas with two master designers in a truly unique location where nature and the ancient architecture combine to produce a stimulating learning environment. Visits to neighboring Provencal villages, museums, cultural highlights and fishing ports were a popular part of the workshop.

5

Settings Workshop settings The Studio

Armando and Cynthia Milani, as part of their development of the Moulin des Trois Arcs, created a unique home in the old olive mill and, in an adjacent building, a modern design studio where the workshop was conducted. The facility served the work-shop very well for individual work space, wireless internet connection, library and lecture/projection use.

Dialogues

Cynthia Milani Questions posed by Cynthia Milani to workshop participants in her lecture on personal branding. What makes you special? What do you want to be remembered for? What are your “blessings? What are your core values/ethics? What do you do to demonstrate those values? What do you want to achieve in the next 15/10/5 years? What is your mission in life? What is your personal vision? How will you get there? What are your strengths, weaknesses, threats, opportunities? What are your goals and objectives? Are you being true to your brand? What is your Myers-Briggs Personality Type? How does that impact your life?

R. Roger Remington Professor Remington presented an illustrated lecture on design theory, namely the application of Visual Rhetoric for graphic design applications. His talk identified the historical connection between ancient rhetoric and contemporary graphic design. He made the case for rhetoric as a basis in both analytical and generative processes of visual problem-solving. In his introductory remarks, he said, “This will be a lecture in design theory which hopefully will open your eyes to a new approach to creativity and the process of design. Today we are dealing here with both the head and the heart, not so much the hand. In that way we are adding a new dimension to the collective learning experience at the workshop.

Helvetica Movie During the workshop, at the urging of Massimo Vignelli, there was a late evening showing of the film Helvetica. This film is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.

Summary comments by Master Designers Massimo Vignelli

The pleasant setting of the Moulin de Trois Arcs in the beautiful landscape of Provence made it an ideal place to have the week long seminar on graphic design. Some of the participants were students from the last year of school, some others were professionals with several years of practice, some others were teachers in Design schools. Their diversity of background added to the liveliness of the course, as well it underlined some of the problems that have emerged as a consequence of the different teaching of typography in many schools in the last twenty years. With few exceptions among the participants, we noticed a great diversity of typographic knowledge, both in terms of structure, awareness and sensibility By the end, these diversities were overcome by the quality of the results. Our major efforts were addressing the issue of consistent handling of the identifiers within a given project. The positive aspect was the willingness of the participants to implement our corrections, sometime with great efforts, due more to different backgrounds than willingness to follow instructions, however the final results of the projects were remarkably good. Some of the participants displayed a mature dose of creativity and talent and that contributed to rise the spirit of the group.

On the last day of the seminar we had a very interesting lecture by Roger Remington on the issue of Rhetoric in Graphic Design. The presentation was paired by a series of brilliant examples supporting a list of rhetoric issues. A rare and excellent opportunity to learn about reaches of Design approaches. As a closing event Cynthia Milani gave us a very interactive presentation about personal branding and a test based on the Myers-Briggs questionnaire. It was a very entertaining and informative lecture which engaged the whole audience till the end. How much of the benefits of this week will be saved in the future is too soon to determine. but this not withstanding I am in favor of repeating this experiment and extending its participation to a wider international group of students. The presentations of the Speakers and the guidance of the Masters represents in itself an opportunity not to be missed by people coming to this seminars from different places and less exposed to this kind of opportunities. I hope this initiative will continue in the next future, and I thank Armando and Cynthia Milani for giving birth to it. Massimo Vignelli

Summary comments by Master Designers in faculty Armando Milani

Two years ago Massimo Vignelli introduced me to Roger Remington in New York and we immediately liked each other. The next year, Roger came to visit us at the Moulin and later I visited Roger at the Rochester Institute of Technology for a lecture to his students. We started to envision the seminars and workshops at the Moulin with Massimo and Lella. That idea now is transformed into a beautiful reality. I really enjoyed this week with Lella, Massimo, Roger, Cynthia and our 12 motivated participants. Working with the students, it was clear that in order to express their creativity they needed more knowledge of the typography and, in some cases, it was difficult to achieve the perfection that we demanded. My recommendation to all the students is to look for constant improvement reading design books, magazine articles on creativity, to be always alert and show passion, passion, passion for their work. It is very important to achieve more confidence in yourself and learn how to be in contact with your emotions in order to be able to transmit that to the reader. Synthesis from the eye to the heart is a must: teaching, particularly with designers of the Vignelli caliber is a continuous stimulation toward the research of new expression and the deeper descover of one’s self.

For me, the most important part of this workshop were the presentations followed by the dialogues and analysis with the students with the documentation of the words that are the interpretation of our values and our creativity. My wife Cynthia was a master provoking this dialogue and understanding how to apply the principles to our own lives, and Roger Remington made the entire experience possible with his excellent organizational and oratory skills. Finally, I would like to say that it was an honor and priviledge to have Massimo and Lella Vignelli with us, Their intelligence, humor, dedication and genius for design will be an inspiritation to all who were able to join us in the Dialogues in Design, 2008. The olive tree dedicated to our experience has been christened and is thriving. The lovely yellow flowers Cynthia received have been planted and grace our garden with the memories of each and everyone of our participants. It is my wish that this workshop will be just the beginning of many more years of such beautiful programs at our Moulin. Armando Milani

The last word R. Roger Remington

While planning and implementing Dialogues in Design, I found myself creating certain hopes and expectations for the workshop. Having visited the Moulin, I knew that the setting would be perfect. Knowing Massimo Vignelli and Armando Milani as our master teachers, I was completely certain that the workshop participants would gain a great deal from the experience. How could we not succeed with two world-class designers as teachers? What I did not factor in was the special chemistry of the unique group of individuals that would attend this summer. It was exceptional and, for me, made all the difference in what actually happened. Therefore my hopes and dreams for the workshop were exceeded in every respect. It was a great pleasure to work with Massimo and Armando. Having Lella with us made the week a very special occasion and we all appreciated so much her contributions. Finally a great big thank you to Cynthia Milani. Beyond the substantive intellectual contributions to the workshop, she made sure that we were all fed so well and that the balance of project work to enjoyment of Provence was made real. In conclusion what comes to mind are the words of a colleague which seem an appropriate way for me to conclude. “It is out of the relationships we establish among ourselves, while participating in

this enterprise and it is with the fruits of our cumulative efforts, born as we proceed toward clearer expressions of an understanding of our times, that we can expect a prophetic style to emerge. DIALOGUE IS EDUCATION IS COMMUNICATION
