HOLIDAY 2018

LAKE LAS VEGAS HOSTS TREE LIGHTING & RED HAT RUN

– By Ann-Marie Auger Andrews

To usher in the holiday season, Lake Las Vegas hosted its 15th annual Christmas Tree lighting and first Santa Red Hat Run this past Saturday, November 17 at the Village at LakeLas Vegas. The lighting of the 36-foot tree took place at 6 p.m. in the Village on the lawn. Participants were invited to donate new and gently used adult sized sweaters for the Lake Las Vegas Live Dasco Sweater Drive to benefit the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. Sweaters are being collected at all Lake Las Vegas amenities through January 1, 2019. “Let The Holiday Season Begin at Lake Las Vegas,” said Andy Gil, director of media for Lake Las Vegas. “It was a fantastic opportunity to get into the holiday spirit with your

family and friends, and explore what Lake Las Vegas has to offer.” The tree lighting took place on the lawn and featured a performance by Annie Meadows. Annie Meadows is a contemporary Christian singer/songwriter and is a fan favorite at Lake Las Vegas. She has performed alongside a number of popular musical acts and flows between contemporary and traditional styles of music with an added touch of Celtic sound.

MEET THE NEIGHBOR:

GALLERIA AT SUNSET – By Andy Gil

W e recently had a chance to catch up with Jamie Cooper, marketing director at Galleria at Sunset. She gave us her insight on the mall’s success, how it has remained relevant for generations of shoppers and what it’s up to for the holidays.

Tell me about the mall, how many stores are there and what are they? How many department stores? We are a regional mall located in Henderson and we have 5 department stores and over a million square-feet of retail and restaurants that includes JC Penney, Macy’s, Dillards, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Kohls. For the small shop tenants we now have just over 120, and this year we’ve opened 8 new concepts and 2 new restaurants. What are the major/most recognizable name brand stores that are in the Galleria at Sunset? Some of the stores that we have inside the mall are Forever 21, Aldo, Express – name brands that are seen at most malls. We also have a number of first-to-market stores like Boxed Lunch, restaurants like Bobby Mao’s, World of Beer, Bravo Italian, and Rodizio Grill opening in November. Tell me what it’s like working at the Galleria at Sunset now with knowledge about the growth in Henderson. This is a really exciting time to be in Henderson and Las Vegas because of the growth that’s happening. We are seeing the economy rebound back and that includes more leasing. We are getting more tenants, and with more rooftops being built that means more people visiting the mall. The City of Henderson said they are getting 500 to 800 new residents every month so we are a booming economy, which is exciting. What we are seeing here is that this is a great place for people to come and shop, to be entertained, and come and participate in events. What types of events do you have throughout the year? We offer a wide variety of events. In the spring we have an Easter experience and invite families to come out and interact with the Easter bunny. We also do Mother’s Day and Father’s Day events, and different things throughout the year including a beer festival in September. We will be introducing some new events next year that we are really excited about, and we also have our holiday program. We are one of the busiest shopping centers on Black Friday since we have five department stores. We are also a resource for the community when it comes to back-to-school shopping. On average we host about 30 different nonprofit fundraising events each year. Can you elaborate on the growth of online shopping and its effects on mall shopping? We are a mall that is doing really well. Our traffic is great. We have been in this community for 22 years and people see Galleria as a resource. People see it as a place to come and hang out and there are generations of families from grandmothers to granddaughters. People have been coming here since the mall was built. We have a growing economy so that helps, and there is a necessity. When it comes to shopping centers I think they just need to adjust – millennials are looking for new experiences and we have to evolve with them to keep people flowing through the doors. During the holiday season we’ll have snow falling, caroling and Santa photos for kids and pets. It’s all about creating an experience. What is your new relationship like with Lake Las Vegas especially now that there is easy access through Galleria Drive? We are really excited about the direct connect from

the Lake Las Vegas community right to our back door since it is only a 10 minute commute. We’re seeing major growth within the community and we are excited to see all the newcomers who are choosing Lake Las Vegas as their home. We want to be a resource for them as the place to shop. Lake Las Vegas has always been thought of as being “too far,” what do you think about that especially since you just mentioned the short 10 minute commute? Based on the connections that have been made, nothing is “too far” including Lake Las Vegas. With all of the development that the City of Henderson has done to make Lake Las Vegas more connected in different areas means that there is no one specific way to get there, there are multiple access points.

WHAT’S NEW IN LAKE LAS VEGAS REAL ESTATE? – By Sarah Thornton

Real estate is booming at Lake Las

Vegas, with ten new home communities offering hundreds of different options for lakeside living. Among Lake Las Vegas’ newest real estate offerings is the completion of its new custom show home and the announcement of Vantage by Blue Heron. Dutt said the academy will be the only facility in Southern Nevada of its kind and will offer golfers an on-site venue that gives them access to learn the sport first-hand from professional players. Former PGA golfers Craig Barlow and Jeff Gallagher were appointed this year as golf instructors at Reflection Bay. Barlow, a PGA Tour professional who has made 170 cuts on the PGA Tour and competed in eight major tournaments including the British Open and five U.S. Opens, is the club’s director of instruction. Former professional golfer Jeff Gallagher has played on the PGA Tour and the Nationwide Tour. Chef Daniel has already begun revitalizing the Hilton’s dining menus with farm-to-table ingredients and delivering an elevated approach to each dish. Check out Chef Daniel’s holiday menus! “My goal is to offer a variety of healthy options with only the freshest ingredients, so even comfort foods will be made in a healthy way,” said Pfeiffer, who said he often visited the best restaurants in Southern California to stay in tune with the latest trends. “I found that healthy options, fresh ingredients and high-quality foods rank at

the top of the list for people when they dine out.” Trained in Germany, Chef Daniel’s career spans more than 30 years with positions at the MGM International in Reno, Nev., the University of Southern California, Luxor Hotel, Flamingo Hotel, Palace Station and Boulder Station in Las Vegas. ERIC DUTT JOINS LAKE LAS VEGAS AS DIRECTOR OF GOLF OPERATIONS FOR REFLECTION BAY GOLF CLUB

Lake Las Vegas is thrilled to welcome

Eric Dutt, one of Lake Vegas’ most renowned golf figures, as the new General Manager of the Reflection Bay Golf Club. As a lifelong, title-winning, amateur golfer, he is a fixture in the Nevada golf scene, recognized as a master in golf management and a charismatic host of celebrity and charity golf events. Over the last 30+ years, his career has been highlighted by a string of impressive positions, starting with a 10-year stint as Tournament Operations Manager for the PGA, LPGA and PGA Senior tours events in Las Vegas. From there, Mr. Dutt spent the next decade leaving his mark on golf facilities all over the area, serving as General Manager of Badlands Golf Club, becoming Director of Marketing

for Walters Golf, and eventually moving to Harrah’s Entertainment (owner of Caesars Entertainment) where he overhauled operations for several major courses. As Vice President of Golf Operations for Caesars Entertainment, his bold leadership led to substantially increased rounds of golf, a complete profit turnaround, and prestigious recognition for two courses in particular—Rio Secco and Cascata— which are now both listed among the nation’s Top 100 courses in virtually every golf publication. Lake Las Vegas is proud to have Eric Dutt at the helm of the beautiful Reflection Bay Golf Club with its spectacular Jack Nicklaus Signature Design

PGA TOUR VETERAN

Craig Barlow Joins Reflection Bay Golf Club Junior and amateur golfers have the opportunity to learn

the art of the game firsthand from former professional golfer Craig Barlow, who recently joined Reflection Bay Golf Club as its director of instruction. Barlow, who has competed in eight major tournaments including the British Open, will spend the next chapter of his life providing insight and instruction to the future generation of golfers. Eric Dutt, golf operations manager at Reflection Bay, says Barlow will provide instruction ranging from individual lessons to golf schools and group clinics at the Falls Practice Facility. “Because of the knowledge [Craig] acquired throughout his career, he can help golfers from the basic standpoint all the way to what it takes for a tour player to be successful,” says Dutt. “His knowledge has come from watching and playing with the best players in the world, not from reading ]a book.”

Craig Barlow is no stranger to Reflection Bay and has been an avid player on the course. “I’m biased, but it’s the best course in Las Vegas,” says Barlow. “Golf in Las Vegas is actually a pretty popular destination: A lot of tour players are moving to Las Vegas. There’s a big tax advantage to being here. We don’t have state tax here. We probably have between 20 and 30 tour players that have an affiliation in Las Vegas.” Barlow says he has big plans for Reflection Bay Golf Club, including bringing a junior golf academy to Lake Las Vegas. “There are no junior golf academies on the West Coast,” says Barlow. “This is home to me. When I was on tour I represented Lake Las Vegas, so it’s ironic that my playing career is over, and I am teaching at Lake Las Vegas. It’s a perfect world.”

BUSINESS OWNERS SETTLE IN AT LAGO VISTA – By Stacy D’Alessandro

When Jack Ball left Arizona and moved

to Las Vegas in 1995 to open his window fashions business, his flight over the city landed him a preview of the development he and his wife Patti would one day call home.More than 20 years later, Jack and Patti Ball are celebrating their long-awaited move to Lake Las Vegas and are settling into William Lyon’s Lago Vista community. “We always wanted to live in Lake Las Vegas,” said Ball, who has followed the growth of the community over the years. “Being boaters and people who love the water, we had this area on our radar to watch. We thought it would be an amazing place to live one day.”

“The furniture is mostly contemporary with some traditional elements included,” says Aubuchon. “For example, we’re thinking of adding a big chandelier over the piano. We’ll have accent walls and maybe some wallpaper. The artwork will be big and bold.” The home was built with several upgrades and features that appealed to the Balls. Highlights include the flooring throughout the home, which is a dark brown and cream-colored mix that looks like wood but is porcelain tile. Additionally, the great room’s fireplace has travertine tile all the way to the ceiling, and its gliding glass

As the owner of Cover It Window Fashions, Ball has more opportunities than the average home shopper to visit new home communities. His business of outfitting windows with the latest technology in screens, shutters and custom blinds takes him to new communities regularly, and he says nothing compares to Lago Vista in Lake Las Vegas. When completed, the gated community of Lago Vista will feature 52 contemporary designed homes situated near Reflection Bay Golf Club and Montelago Village. Residents have their own private beach cove with access to all the amenities of the lake and steps away from the world class Reflection Bay Golf Course. Lago Vista offers 4 distinct contemporary plans from 3,733 square foot single story home to 5,032 square foot two story. From Lake side homesites to Golf course views, Lago Vista offers it all. Prices start in the high 700’s. The Balls and their 9-year-old Australian Shepherd, Rain, live in a 4,300 square-foot, two-story home with four bedrooms and four and half baths. The interior is being completed by designer Perry Aubuchon, who says the décor will reflect an eclectic contemporary style.

The gliding doors in the great room are outfitted with Cover Its Hunter Douglas Designer Screen shades with PowerView® motorization that are programmed to open and close at various times of the day. The master bedroom boasts a large master bath with a his-and-her vanity separated by a walk-in bathtub. The large shower features dual shower heads and a rain shower. Each bedroom in the home includes a balcony with views of the golf course. The bedrooms at the back of the house showcase views of Reflection Bay Golf Club and the lake. “I want to be out on the lake paddle boarding,” said Patti, who grew up in Iowa and met Jack when they worked at the same printing company in Phoenix. After moving from Phoenix to Las Vegas, the duo spent a lot of time working, collecting cars and traveling.

There is a large great room, master bedroom and a kitchen with exotic granite and quartz throughout.” A standout feature is the pool that will wrap around the great room when it is completed in October. Onlookers will be able to view the pool from the home’s main entrway, the guest room on the first floor and

The Balls have travelled to more than 20 locations around the world including St. Petersburg, Russia; Buenos Aires, Argentina and throughout Italy. Their passion for cars is Italian in nature—favoring the Ferraris and Maseratis—but they are also loyal Cadillac fans. Giving back to the community is high on the Balls’ list of priorities. They attend The Church at South Las Vegas and are avid supporters of Grant a Gift for Autism and Destiny House, a home that offers shelter for women trying to escape the sex-worker industry and re-establish their lives. The Balls provides window coverings for each organization’s facility.

LAKE LAS VEGAS SPORTS CLUB

LANDS AN ACE WITH DANN BATTISTONE – By Stacy D’Alessandro

The Lake Las Vegas Sports Club has made

its mark at the master-planned community of Lake Las Vegas as an exclusive club with world-class amenities. Since opening in January 2017, the club has grown to include more than 1,000 members, and support for the club is not slowing down. If you ask the club’s general manager, Dann Battistone, he would tell you it’s a place where the community can get to know each other and become friends. In fact, Battistone, a former professional tennis player who ranked in the top 100s in the world in doubles, said his goal is to get to know each club member by their first name. We caught up with him to learn a little more about his background and the sports club.

Tell us about your background. The sports club opened in January 2017 and I was hired in November 2016. I have a background in both sports and fitness, and financial services, so my work experience aligned well with what the club needed. I am a former professional tennis player that was ranked in the top 100s in the world in doubles. Tennis is my passion. I have a vision for making the Sports Club a place where both recreational members and top professionals can enjoy our facility. We hold weekly tennis clinics that are available to our members and their guests. In my tennis travels around the world, I have been to hundreds of clubs. (My father also owned a tennis club in Santa Barbara. I grew up with that dream of maybe one day owning or running a club of my own. This dream has essentially come true!) Although I am not involved in the actual ownership of the club, each day I have the opportunity to work with the members in making the club a wonderful place to be. What type of amenities are available as a member of the club? The club offers over 50 fitness classes per week, two pools, a hot tub, a state-of-the-art fitness center, steam rooms, a game room with pinball, a pool table, air hockey, shuffleboard, and more. We also have six pickleball courts and four tennis courts which complement the beautiful greens and fairways that sit directly behind the club. I don’t know of another club that has so many different activities and classes that you can participate in. Pickleball? Pickleball has also become a fast growing sport that our members have embraced. We have had several successful tournaments since the Sports Club opened, the largest of which had approximately 200 entries Two of our members, Deb Dempsey

and Angela Rozovics, were chosen as Pickleball Ambassadors in the Las Vegas area. Every Wednesday and Saturday evening you will see our courts full of players anxious to challenge each other to a game. What are some of the activities on the lake? The 320-acre lake is a wonderful amenity for home owners and Sports Club members alike. Sports Club members have private beach access where they can take kayaks, canoes or paddle boards out onto the water for a peaceful ride around the lake. What are some fun things for families to do at the club? The classes are one of the main attractions for families. My daughters love the dance classes. There’s something different every day of the week with 50plus classes for all ages. There are very few times throughout the week where you will not find something happening. Whether it’s kids in the pool, a family get-together at the game room, or sitting with siblings at the fire pits overlooking the golf course, there is always something to do. What do you enjoy most about managing the club? I have truly enjoyed getting to know the people that represent Lake Las Vegas. The club members come from all over the world, bringing with them their specific talents, interests and charisma. Our staff members have also done a phenomenal job at bringing the Sports Club community together, and I have enjoyed seeing relationships being built over this last year and a half. It’s not often that you get to do the things you really love to do. I work in a beautiful place with great people, and while I spend a lot of my time on the administrative and leadership side, I still get

to spend several days a week teaching tennis and pickleball lessons and clinics. It has been a great fit for me. I often think about the days when my kids are grown it is just my wife and me. We could live in Lake Las Vegas, buy a golf cart and never have to leave! It is such a great community with lots to do while still being so quiet and peaceful. What is something that members might not know about the club? One of the best kept secrets in Lake Las Vegas is the view from our back patio at dusk. If you come on a cool fall or winter evening, you can enjoy the spectacular view while warming up next to the outdoor fireplace. Turn on the music softly, take a seat and enjoy one of our best kept secrets! What has the UNLV Sports Science Center brought to the club? The UNLV Sports Science Center has added a new level of professionalism to our programming. UNLV has brought state-of-the-art equipment here that members can use for fitness assessments, such as evaluating body fat percentages, visceral levels, etc. The Sports Science center is also used for research, studies, and guest presentations from fitness and science-based industry experts. What do you hope to see at the club in the future? I hope to see a thriving tennis and golf academy here at the Sports Club. We have the facilities and space to rival any other sports academy. In the near future, families who have a passion for golf and tennis will be moving to Lake Las Vegas because it gives their kids the best opportunities for golf and tennis training found anywhere

MEET TWO TRUE FIRST RESPONDERS

LAS VEGAS METRO POLICE K9 OFFICERS SEAN MALIA & BEAR – By Andy Gil

Lake Las Vegas’ own Andy Gil was invited to

ride along with Las Vegas Metro K9 Officer Sean Malia and his K9 partner, Bear, where he witnessed an evening on Vegas’ streets and learned more about these amazing two- and four-legged first responders.  What brought you to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department from California? And did you ever see yourself working with K9 and now SWAT? My uncle was a retired police officer living here in Las Vegas and told me great things about LVMPD 20 years ago. Working in K9 and assisting the SWAT team is a privilege, and was always a goal of mine.

career, and Friends allows for that same care to continue helping with all of their medical needs once they retire. It is a passion of mine to ensure these dogs get to enjoy the retirement they deserve. Tell me all about the Las Vegas Metro K9 Trials. How did it start? It looks like it’s been growing every year. (And congrats on your 2017 win!) We are in our twenty-eighth year of the K9 Trials. It’s our largest fundraiser for the non-profit.

It brings agencies from all across the country and allows them to showcase their K9 teams. The first two days take place at Lake Las Vegas and the final ay takes place at the Orleans Arena. Last year, my K9 partner Bear and I competed. We were fortunate to win Top Dog out of 40 competitors and we helped win Top Agency. This meant a lot to me to represent my K9 section, my department and my community. Being “Vegas Strong” is something I take very seriously and hold dear to my heart.

We often come across many people that really don’t know what going in first really entails and what intense training is involved. Talk to me about that and the fact that you and your K9 team are the definition of real “first responders.” Often we are on scene with patrol officers before SWAT arrives. Active crime scenes demand we act and deploy our K9 partners accordingly. Our K9 partners save lives. They give us the time and distance to address a dangerous situation that we encounter. Talk about the organization, Friends For LV K9. How does the group help animals in transition, and how did you get involved? Friends is a great organization. Our department takes great care of our K9 partners during their

AN INTERVIEW WITH

DIAN HODGE

A TRUE LV LAKER (LLV RESIDENT.) Katie (Lake Las Vegas): How long have you lived in Lake Las Vegas and what have you seen? Dian: I’ve lived out here for 18 years. I’ve seen a lot happen since then. I’ve seen it at its prime, seen it when everything went down and now its on the upswing. Katie: Tell us more about you and your background? Dian: I am a fragrance cosmetic designer, and I used to make all the fragrances for the hotels on the strip in the 1990’s. I also have my own fragrance, which sold on QVC. I sold my company and started helping friends with interior design, and also started running the Ciao Bella luncheon club about 15 years ago. The Ciao Bella Luncheon is a Lake Las Vegas community ladies lunch, and all new people are welcome to join us for lunch once a month. We now have it at the sports club, on the second Monday of every month. We invite new residents and people, we like to have speakers, and have a new hostess of the month every month. We average about 40-60 ladies and all new residents anywhere in Lake Las Vegas are invited. Katie: That is wonderful! What else do you do to support the community? Dian: Besides the running luncheons, I am also on the board of Safe House in Henderson, and it is supported by the Lake Las Vegas community. The Lake Las Vegas ladies donate household goods and clothes to help women and children who are victims of domestic violence. We host a fund-raiser every year in May at the Reflection Bay Golf Club, with a silent auction and all proceeds going to Safe House in Henderson.

BRIAN KRUEGER ON VITA BELLA TOWN HOMES – By Andy Gil Andy (Lake Las Vegas): Tell us about Edward Homes coming to Lake Las Vegas. Brian: Edward Homes is a local home builder established here back in 1998 and has built more than 400 homes throughout Southern Nevada. Andy: I can feel the excitement at Lake Las Vegas about the additions to Vita Bella. You must be excited as well? Brian: We are excited because this community, Vita Bella at Lake Las Vegas, is kind of a re-introduction of a community that was built nearly twelve years ago. 24 new town-homes that will range in size from 1,700 to 2,100 square feet. The location within Lake Las Vegas is prime because we’re surrounded by Reflection Bay Golf Course, you’ve got the Sports Clubhouse and the cove, and then we have the Westin Resort, so we’ve got a really dynamic location. For more contact information, and to learn more about Vita Bella and what we are going to be offering you, go to VitaBellaLakeLasVegas.com or visit the master plan website at LakeLasVegas.com for more information and to explore opportunities for home ownership at Vita Bella.

CELEBRATED AMERICANA AT LAKE LAS VEGAS – By Dax Holt

A lakeside resort spot in the desert? I had to see it myself,

and left SoCal behind for a weekend at Lake Las Vegas. I was invited to be a celebrity judge at the Lake Las Vegas Celebrate Americana art competition which fell just after Independence Day. I came to find out that Lake Las Vegas is a pretty popular getaway among Las Vegas and Henderson locals for many reasons. Lake Las Vegas’ Celebrate Americana was a full day of art, barbecue by Celebrity Chef Commings , live performance by the Henderson Symphony Orchestra and even fireworks which Lake Las Vegas is also apparently known for. They actually have a Summer Fireworks Series! MDW - 4th Of July (almost) - LDW. Hey who doesn’t love fireworks! I started my weekend at The Westin Lake Las Vegas and relaxing by a surprising great pool that I want to bring the kids back too. I headed over to Reflection Bay Golf Club & Beach Club where I was again surprised to see hundreds of people making their way to the lake’s sandy white beach. When I got to the beach, I was face to face with the most amazing and intricate 5-foot-tall sand castle. My two new

buddies, the ‘Sand Guys,’ spent 12 hours constructing the most impressive sand sculpture any of us had ever seen. This quickly became the focal point of the party and was definitely a big hit on Instagram. Back inside I took to my “highly” sought after celebrity judge roll for the art show that had hundreds of entries with everything from oil paintings and photographs to water color and sculptures. After some deliberation, we handed out hundreds of dollars in prize money to several talented artists. Once the sun was down it was fireworks time! What made this show so spectacular however, was the location. They fired off from a type of floating stage and what seemed like 20 feet over our heads! The Henderson Symphony Orchestra serenated the crowd with patriotic ‘Americana’ tunes. I have to admit, Lake Las Vegas made me feel at home and isn’t that far from the strip we all know so well. Thank you to the Lake LV team for the fun and hopefully see you soon!

Four Questions

WITH BLUE HERON’S TYLER JONES – By Andy Gil

B

lue Heron is known for building exquisite custom homes that seamlessly integrate natural desert landscape with modern architectural elements. So when Blue Heron was choosing a site for its latest project, Lake Las Vegas’ stunning waterfront location was the perfect fit. Recently, I sat down with Blue Heron Owner and Founder Tyler Jones to talk about his upcoming project in Lake Las Vegas, the local real estate market and how his company gives back to the community. Deluxe Version Magazine: Why is now the right time to buy a luxury home in Las Vegas? Tyler Jones: The market here is on fire: We have buyers coming from other states; a lot of the tax changes have had a big impact; and, most importantly, Las Vegas is a beautiful place to live. The city is just maturing and I think it’s building on itself. We’re becoming more and more of a relevant city, nationally…we’re at the beginning of a major upswing of the market right now.

DVM: What made you decide to build in Lake Las Vegas? TJ: Our Lake Las Vegas partnership is something we’re very excited about. Lake Las Vegas has always been a premiere destination neighborhood and with the new ownership, they’ve really taken a new spin on things and are bringing a lot of new energy. They’re really trying to open things up to new possibilities and that’s where we come in to play. The surroundings are beautiful, [residents] have the lake, it’s quiet and it’s built super close to town. There’s a lot of new infrastructure with schools and roads and it’s really the perfect time for us to get involved. DVM: What will make Blue Heron homes stand out? TJ: The Vegas Modern Architecture philosophy is really about a couple of things: We want to be very true to the climate and to the Mojave Desert and the natural state (of the surroundings).

We have the materials in the architecture to really respond to that. We also want to be true to the fact that we are in Las Vegas. The Strip is just a few miles away…that’s part of the energy that we bring to the architecture as well. It’s marrying that edgy Las Vegas lifestyle with that natural environment. DVM: What makes the community you’re developing at Lake Las Vegas different? TJ: We’re going to be selling homes at a more affordable price point than what we’ve done before. So that’s great for us to be able to offer the Vegas modern style to a different audience than what we’ve done in the past. Stay tuned for an announcement this summer on Blue Heron’s new Lake Las Vegas community!

single-family home community being built by Lennar in Lake Las Vegas is poised to showcase homes with a view. Situated across from Reflection Bay Golf Club, The Outlook will comprise 84 home sites, and almost all will have a view of the mountains, the lake or the golf course. “We designed the homes for families to really be able to enjoy the view,” says Joy Broddle, Lennar’s Las Vegas division president. “It’s kind of like living art when you look out through the glass, and most of the backs of the homes are actually designed around that view. So, there’s a ton of glass, from eight-foot sliding doors to 10-foot sliding doors. You won’t even have to put up any art. There’s art right outside your backyard.”

Home shoppers can choose from three single-story floor plans at The Outlook, including the 2,320 square-foot National, which is priced at $586,990 and features three bedrooms and two baths. The Royal is a 2,550 square-foot home with two bedrooms and two baths, and is priced at $602,990. EIGHT QUESTIONS WITH

SCOTT COMMINGS – By Andy Gil

W

hat is the one food you personally can’t go with out during the holiday season? Snacks – good cheeses, sliced meats and salame. For me, the holidays are all about gathering together with loved ones and enjoying good food. I always have an abundance of foods to feature out throughout the day. Everything stays out in order to revisit along the way. What is the one holiday food item you can easily do without? Any kind of Jell-O-style salad with the whipped cream fluff added in – every family has one. It’s just not my taste. Getting to know you over this past year, I have witnessed your passion for cooking. Are you as passionate about the grocery shopping part too? In preparation for a holiday feast I may shop at 4 or 5 different stores. I know where to find the good meats and cheeses (Michael’s gourmet pantry, curds, and whey), where to find the best meats or roasts (the butcher block) or where to find the right produce, depending on the season. What is the one mistake you see people make every holiday season when it comes to a family dinner? Preparation – there is phrase us chefs use frequently in the kitchen – Mise en Place – meaning everything in its place, which is so important when entertaining. Pre-planning and preparation are vital in order to have a successful and enjoyable party. Create a menu, create a prep list, and get things done ahead of time – like cutting vegetables and peeling potatoes the day before. Do anything that you can do beforehand to minimize stress and enjoy the holiday. When you were young during the holidays did you spend any time in the kitchen or did you just worry about what was under the tree? Coming from an Italian family we all spent time with grandma in the kitchen, mostly tasting different dishes. As a ritual the men always clean up after dinner so the ladies can sit and talk. This was never a burden but a bonding time for parents, uncles, cousins, siblings, etc., it was always a good time. Do you suggest getting kiddos involved in holiday cooking in some way? The kids should always be involved in anyway possible. Cooking and food create memories that can last a lifetime. When my kids were little I used to set them on the counter so they could touch and taste along the way. Those were special moments.

If someone is an adequate cook and wants to show off during the holidays for their significant other, is there a simple recipe you would recommend or would you simply have them hire you? Hire me! No, just kidding. There are some really simple things that you can do in the kitchen to impress someone. One of the simplest things that you can do is to braise something, which is to slow cook with liquid for a long amount of time. Honestly, the Internet is truly amazing in its ability to provide incredible recipes and teach how to follow cooking techniques. A quote from the movie Ratatouille – “anyone can cook.” What is Chef Scott Commings asking Santa for this Christmas? Chef Scott will be asking for a couple new chef knives for Christmas. I lost one this year and it is time for a replacement. A good chef knife to a chef is truly an extension of the hand. Every household needs at least one good chef knife.

ROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP (APPROX. 8 CUPS)

INGREDIENTS 1 Medium Butternut Squash 6 Cups Water ¼ cup plus 2 Tbsp. Brown Sugar ½ tsp. Ground Cloves 1 tsp. Kosher Salt ¾ cup Heavy Cream PREPARE THE SQUASH

Halve the squash lengthwise and scrape out the seeds and pulp. Place cut side down on a baking sheet and roast at 375 degrees for 45 minutes or until soft. Let cool. In a sauce pan scrape the cooked squash and cover with the water. Add the brown sugar ground cloves and kosher salt. Bring to a boil and turn to a simmer. Cook for 15 minutes. Using a hand blender, puree the mixture to combine to a smooth consistency. Utilize a kitchen blender if a hand blender is not available (puree in batches and use caution with any hot liquid). Bring the mixture back to a simmer and add the cream; let simmer an additional 5 minutes. Taste for seasoning. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving. Serve and top with crème fraiche or candied walnuts. Enjoy!!

ON THE LAKE WITH TONY CORDASCO

Tony recently spoke with University of Washington Wom-

en’s Rowing Head Coach Yasmin Farooq. Farooq’s NCAA Division 1 team recently competed in the second annual Lake Las Vegas Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Lake Las Vegas and the Lake Las Vegas Rowing Club. Tony Cordasco (Lake Las Vegas): Three teams were at the grand finale last year, right? It’s just amazing that you can bring these three powerhouse teams together here in Lake Las Vegas. Yasmin Farooq: It’s a beautiful lake and the location is really fantastic regardless of where you live in the United States because there is a direct flight to Vegas from nearly anywhere. So, I know the Big Ten really like it. They’re trying to find a location for a Big Ten Pac 12 race in the middle of the season, so from a location stand point, Lake Las Vegas is perfect. TC: Tell us about the Pac-12 conference, how are you faring there and on the national scene and when is your next big challenge coming up? YF: Last year, the Pac-12 was the most competitive conference going into the NCAA and I suspect that will be true as well.

TC: Coach, rowing not only in Washington but around the country, how is it faring as far as a woman’s sport? Is it growing? YF: Oh yeah! It’s a huge sport that’s on the rise and NCAA sponsored, so we have scholarships for college. TC: How many do you have? YF: We have twenty and that’s the maximum. Because rowing has so many scholarships, it’s an opportunity for a lot of great athletes in high school. Often, they come from other sports, but the parents see the opportunity with rowing. TC: One of the best sites you can imagine out here at Lake Las Vegas and in rowing is the comraderie. Not only with your own team, but I have seen them mingling with each other and it looks like there is a lot of support in rowing. YF: Absolutely! There is no super star on the boat, it takes nine people. The Lake Las Vegas Rowing Club is a non-profit organization that offers rowing programs for students and adults year-round.
