There are over 150,000 abandoned/vacant lots in Detroit creating dumping grounds for debris and a magnet for danger and violence all over the city. These locations take away the visual appeal of our city, put our children in danger and decrease the value of the land and the neighborhoods that these lots reside. We can change this with Community Pop Up Art Exhibition Project. This project takes an abandoned lot, clean it up and then place pieces of art from local artist on the land transforming it into a space that can be used by the neighborhood. Cleaning up the lot and transforming it also has the potential of bringing investors in to purchase the land and more good neighbors to homes or other property in the neighborhood.
HOW DOES THIS PROJECT WORK 1. Designate an abandoned lot in a community to carry out the project work 2. Connect with the community members to gather the support to clean the lot and the commitment to keep it clean. 3. Schedule clean up days and invite the neighborhood to come join 4. Install the art on the newly clean lot 5. Celebrate the clean space with the community by hosting a pop up art exhibit and community gathering on the lot 6. Meet with key neighborhood members and provide toolkit to help with maintaining the lot clean and to help create events and activities to occur on the lot year around.
Photos from Current Pop Up Exhibit (Central Detroit)
These photos document the transformation of not only an abaondoned lot, but the community aroiund the lot. In one week and collected resources, we were able to take this lawn from an overgrown unsued land to a gathering place. This lot is currently maintained by community members and have several events planned for the summer and fall of 2013.
COMMITTMENT Keeping abandoned lots clean takes commitment from us, but it takes a bigger commitment by the members of the neighborhoods. Before any work is done to any lots, we will work to find leaders in the community to champion the project. In most cases we will look for 5 members of the neighborhoods to work directly with on the lot transformation process. With the help of these leaders we will recruit more of the neighborhood. With more support the success level increases.
ART & call for local artist Art changes how people view their surroundings and use space. In many cases throughout history it is art and artist that create the visions that .
