Dear DMS Members, Optimizing efficiency and reducing costs of ownership have always been required but today in the Middle East it is more important since the cost of ownership has increased 10-fold in the last 10 years or so due to the need to have the vendors locate operations in the Middle East such that now everybody is looking to scale-down operations. Many NOCs will obviously demand localisation as a means to diversify their economies and to employ more nationals. This is their right of course and to be expected but it does have the negative effect of putting costs up with vendors requiring more resources in the region additionally to those in other regions to support their customers. Other means are required to counter this upward trend in the cost of support and one of those is to make use of the latest technologies. Another is to promote competition but the O&G industry is reticent to use newer systems just as they are to migrate to a competitor and for good reason when you consider the cost of plant shutdowns or troubleshooting problems. The cost of competition is also something that drives-up costs as more people are required just to quote a single replacement part. Is it better therefore to out-source much of our services to service providers that will compete against each other less frequently with contract being renewed every 5 years or so? In answering this question, we should consider that the product life-cycle is shortening these days due to the rapid advancement of technology whilst the cost of electronics is reducing and to out-source on payment of monthly lease agreements at the expense of a one-off capital payment may make a lot of sense. Any change of technology can be handled by the service provider since they would supply/install the equipment of their choice with services bundled together allowing greater use of smart devices, big-data analytics and remote diagnostics. This would have the added benefit of allowing them to understand the customers’ needs better (voice of the customer) and provide better solutions, diagnostics and/or integrated replacement part purchasing without anyone at plant ever having to get involved. It’s a huge ask for end-users to let go of the control but, when viewing the market environment and the technological competence today, it may well be the best way to move forward to reduce the cost of ownership and let’s face it, an engineer working for an end-user is the same engineer that could work for the service provider and so surely the risk is minimal whilst the economical returns are great having cut-out a whole layer of support! BAPCO Modernization Program The Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO) has undertaken a project to improve the operations and profitability of their Sitra refinery. BAPCO’s modernization program aims to revamp the refinery’s crude distillation units by replacing and updating aging units, that will boost the processing capacity to 360,000 barrels per day (bpd) from its current 267,000 bpd. The program will include the staged implementation of these five major units; a residue conversion unit, hydrocracker units, a distillate hydrotreater, a sulfur recovery unit and a delayed coker unit. Other units in the project will comprise of; a waste treatment facility, a hydrogenation unit, a naphtha hydrotreater unit and a dehydro-sulphurization unit which will produce diesel according to international standards with the sulphur content of fewer than 10 parts per million.
BAPCO plans to develop the residue conversion unit first to improve the refinery’s capacity to process heavier crude types into lighter-grade products as the company currently imports 220,000 bpd of crude oil from Saudi Aramco. BAPCO also requires the extra refining capacity because they are planning to build a new A-B pipeline, also known as the New Arabian Pipeline, with Saudi Aramco which will have a capacity to export 350,000 bpd of crude oil to the Bahrain refinery. BAPCO received bids for the EPC contract for the modernization program from 3 consortia back in June 2017. They are currently negotiating with the consortium of Technip, Tecnicas Reunidas, and Samsung Engineering who submitted the lowest bid. This project is currently scheduled to be completed in the year 2020.
Al-Zour- New Refinery Project In order to increase country’s refining capacity to 1.41 million barrels per day (bpd), Kuwait is developing a greenfield Al-Zour Refinery Project (ZOR) which is located 90 kilometers south of Kuwait, the 615,000 bpd facility will supply 225,000 bpd of low-sulfur fuel oil for power generation helping to achieve the maximum benefits from the country’s wealth. The feedstock from the new refinery will be transported through a new 250-km pipeline connecting the Al Zour project with South Tank Farms. The multi-billion project is built in five packages: Main Process Plant; Support Process Plant; Utilities and Offsites; Tankage; Marine Facilities. The Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) floated an initial tender for the main contract in June 2007; however, the project faced political problems and was re-tendered several times with the last Invitations To Bid submitted in July 2015. Finally, in October 2015, KNPC awarded EPC contracts to the following companies: the first package was awarded to Sinopec, Tecnicas Reunidas, and Hanwha E&C; the second and third packages were awarded to Fluor, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Daewoo E&C; The fourth package was given to Essar and Saipem, and the fifth package was to Saipem, Hyundai E&C and SK E&C.
2019. It will be one of the largest refining plants in the world, providing job opportunities for almost a thousand Kuwaiti nationals.

DRPIC’s New Refinery Project Due To Be Completed End Of 2019 Duqm Refinery and Petrochemical Industries Company (DRPIC) is a 50/50 Joint Venture (JV) between Oman Oil Company (OOC) and Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI). OOC, a commercial company owned by the Government of Oman, which was incorporated in 1996 to pursue investment opportunities in the energy sector. KPI is a company organized under the laws of England which was established in 1983. KPI refines and markets fuels, lubricants and other petroleum derivatives outside Kuwait.
The Duqm Refinery Project is set to be completed by the end of 2019 which aims to provide various products such as diesel, jet fuel, naphtha and LPG products.
Duqm Refinery Project aims to produce light distillates at a higher efficiency rate. The refinery comprises of hydrocracking, hydrotreating and delayed coking units, along with sulphur recovery, hydrogen generation and merox treating units. It has the capacity of 230,000 barrels per day (bpd) and is competent of 800,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of styrene, 300,000 bpd of crude oil, 1,500,000 million tpa of polypropylene, and 2,800,000 million tpa of aromatics. Amec Foster Wheeler is in charge of the FEED who has recently won the PMC contract alongside Technip. Around August 5, 2017, the EPC tender for the main processing unit of the Duqm Refinery Project was won by the JV of Daewoo and Tecnicas Reunidas. For the Offsites and Utilities EPC tender, the JV of Petrofac and Samsung Engineering Company while the EPC tender for the third package was won by Saipem International. This strategic partnership between OOC and KPI was proved in the incorporation of Duqm Refinery. This gives a tactical marine location and a competitive advantage being in the path of international shipping lines in the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea. This acts to reimburse the local economy of the area in particular while contributing heavily to the national GDP and also add imperceptible value to Duqm as a destination while introducing new industries to the area.

FieldComm Group Meets with UAE based Vendors/ Users over Technology Marketing Needs FieldComm Group met with UAE based vendors and users to discuss about the marketing needs for their various technologies and to review the programs proposed for the first FieldComm Day – UAE The meeting started off with Paul Sereiko giving a short over view presentation of FieldComm Group to establish a foundational understanding among those present. Mohammed Loch asked each attendee present, to comment on their experiences with the various technologies on offer as well as their opinions on what FieldComm could offer to enhance use of their technologies. HART Communication Protocol seems to be the most popular FieldComm technology in use. Almost all the attendees were using it at least for configuration and commissioning, while some are using it in full digital and this seems to be in the upswing. Foundation Fieldbus was being used by some, but not for control in the field because of an underlying concern of a perceived technology risk. Some of the attendees were using WirelessHART while there were others who chose to not use it at all. None of the users were aware of either the FDI or the APL and while most suppliers were aware of APL, only a few of the suppliers were aware of APL. There was a general agreement between all the attendees on that, although they were using all these technologies, they were not using them to their full potential. The only concerns put forward and that too by a few, were that of “old technology” and a few other perceived negatives. Predictive maintenance was a major point of discussion as a lot of the attendees recognized that HART helped them out a lot on the issue and wanted to use it more. This consequently led to a lot of the attendees suggesting to include the topic, “Using HART for Predictive Maintenance” for the FieldComm Day event. Another point brought up by a vendor was that ProfiBus had a local support center and it would benefit the users of the various technologies provided by FieldComm to have a local
support center for them too. A third suggestion was to provide direct end-user training to the actual endusers rather than having sales engineer trained to provide training to the customer engineering manager who in turn has to train the actual end-users. The representative from Endress+Hauser asked about what FieldComm Group could do to aid in the integration processes, implying on the training and proper use of FDI features. The Schneider representative then pointed out the need to inform users of the optimization in control room real estate that could be achieved with Foundation Fieldbus. Features like “Notes” and “Calculators” could come in handy. All of the attendees, both users and vendors, were quick to agree on the fact that more vendor-neutral training was needed. After discussing about the technology marketing, the meeting moved on to review the proposed program for the first FieldComm Day – UAE. All present seemed to agree to the content proposed for the program with no negative opinions regarding the program. The interest in attending the event seemed positively high with each attendee suggesting that at least 10 members from their company/division would be interested in attending the event. To summarize the meeting, there was wide agreement over the fact that more technology training was needed to improve full usage of FieldComm Group technologies; the vendors were in full support of the need to market FieldComm technologies more in the Middle East and a few even committed to making this recommendation to their management; The FieldComm Day – UAE was given the “Go Ahead!” approval by all present. The meeting concluded with Mohammed Loch deciding to convene a separate meeting with vendors to get participation commitment and to iron out the event details and also to align responsibilities to aid in the execution of the next steps as decided in the meeting.

INSIGHT! FEATURE
Ametek : Interview with Randy Hauer Q) What are the benefits the ISA Analysis Division bring to the industry & how have you been involved? Because of the range of technical disciplines and the fact most arrive at “Analyzers” from the instrument engineering field there is much to learn. The analysis division, the symposium, and access to the 1,000 members is essential. ISA-AD is the only non-profit organization dedicated to the education of analyzer professionals. What always strikes me is the intellectual generosity of the members. No matter their formal education all of us had to acquire the adjacent skill sets from others and all hence we appreciate the obligation to pay it forward, mentor, educate, share, present. And one last observation; there is little to none of the technical ceiling seen in other professions. The process analyzer business is very egalitarian, the flow of information from technician to Engineer to PhD is essential. Day to day observations from the field, by technicians drives this business and hence there is respect from top to bottom and back down again. you have to get “some dirt under your fingernails” to be credible.
Mr.Randy Hauer
Product Manager Ametek Process Instruments Past Director – ISA Analysis Division Q) How long have you been working in the Analysis Industry & why have you chosen to be in this field your whole career? After a stint in sulphur recovery process testing at my company I went into process gas analysers in 1980. As far as choosing process analytics as a profession, like most of us who end up spending their entire career in the field I had no conscious thought at the time it would be my Metier and a life sentence. I graduated as Chem-E and considered myself a process engineer. Like others who I have quizzed; you are a decade into it, you have picked up the electronics, the physics of sample handling systems, the instrument engineering (meanwhile becoming an ISA member) and you come to realize you are an Analyzer person. There is no degree in analyzer engineering but by dint of the arcane nature of the profession and a distinct specialization path you have arrived there. You ask others and they tell you the same story…”I had no idea my career would take this trajectory but I love it for all that it is”

Q) Why do you think the 1st ISA Analysis Division UAE Symposium was so successful & why is the second event even bigger? We had observed from 2000 on, the attendance from the Gulf region to the 5 day AD symposium was our largest international attendance. The demand for the knowledge from the region was there, that was obvious. We knew if we were to locate an AD symposium in the region it would be well subscribed but how to get it off the ground?. We are an “all volunteer” organization, what we needed was the ground level support and so DMS was the catalyst to make this happen. In addition, there is no question that the Gulf region is the centre of hydrocarbon processing and world scale grass roots projects. The recent SADARA project was to my knowledge the largest one time installed base of analyser tags and analyzer house at one go. I would go as far to say that ISA and the AD ‘owed this” to the Gulf region and the many companies who had invested in their people by joining them to this rather small but essential body of specialists. It was overdue Q) There is now an ISA Analysis Division Symposium in Singapore. What other parts of the world would you like to see similar events? An analyser conference requires a certain critical mass of analyzer professionals and a growing HC processing industry. I can see Russia, India and China having these characteristics.

OPERATIONAL ANALYTICS
ARC: Operational Analytics Come of Age Across the industry, “disruption” is the word often used to describe a fundamental of today’s digital economies. It encompasses a broad set or market characteristics that have come about due to improvements in technology. Computing power is cheap and mobile, data is ubiquitous and easier to access than ever, and physical objects can increasingly connect and communicate. Executives are deploying technologies such as smart, connected things; wireless networks; cloud computing; digital twins; and analytics to modernize, improve and transform their business processes, services, and cities. There are now many paths to obtain improvements using data. However, there is no single, “right” path, nor does every operational area need to reach some transformational state of maturity. In fact, that may be overkill for parts of operations. Faced with this reality, executives are finding it difficult to understand how to define, scope, and scale improvements using operational analytics. As a result, many organizations are still working through what to use, where to use it, and when to stop. This report discusses the role and value of existing and new systems and solutions for improving industrial operations via data and analytics. To help frame the discussion, we provide a maturity model for operational analytics. Why Companies Focus on Analytics Analytics can underpin any endeavor in which data is produced. In today’s increasingly connected, digital world, that means they are applicable virtually anywhere. Look no further than historians, connected robots in plants, smart meters in electrical distribution infrastructure, and energy management sensors in government buildings. The benefits of analytics are evident. From creating new business models and achieving margin-boosting operational optimization to supporting consumer choices for energy consumption and reducing pollution, the effective use of analytics can drive benefits across the enterprise, including: •Revenue generation from new methods for serving existing customers and ways to reach new ones •Margin protection through value-added aftermarket services to offset the increasing commoditization of physical equipment sales •Asset and process optimization through improved, proactive, and highly-automated management of infrastructure, resources, and capital •Higher satisfaction and retention by engaging customers with highly-valued products and services where and when they need them
•Operational flexibility and responsiveness that comes from using data to improve the agility, speed, and accuracy of decision making By embracing analytics to help drive better decisions and operating performance across all areas, organizations have an opportunity to modernize and transform their businesses to compete in the 21st century digital economies. The difference now is that many organizations are looking to integrate more sources of new, complex, and often real-time data for analytics. They are also looking to combine that information with the performance data they have been gathering for decades. The data is structured and unstructured, and represents a dizzying array of information in many formats—assets, historians, logs, paper, pdfs, backbone operating systems, financials, spreadsheets, pictures and video, audio, weather, social media, etc. Many Paths to Operational Improvement The marketing hype surrounding new solutions, the role of legacy technology, and differences in analytics techniques make it challenging for business and operations executives in the industry to understand how to move forward. Too often, the discovery process for doing so gets bogged down or derailed by complex discussions on technology and technique. There are many different types of operating systems and solutions, both new and legacy. Each has a role in bringing value to the operations, from gathering and storing critical data to extracting and automating insight from it. To understand what each is trying to do, it is helpful to first examine what area of the operation is being impacted and what systems are commonly found within them. These include operations planning, process control, asset performance, and operating performance. It is also helpful to align those areas of impact with appropriate techniques and the associated systems and solutions. ARC has identified three overarching ways these can provide value: •Visibility and context: Improves intelligence about performance through descriptive analysis, visualization, and measurement •Applied math and statistics: Uses traditional mathematical techniques and designed models to enable comparison, simulation, and control •Machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cognitive analytics: Uses models and algorithms to automate into operations the human capacity for recognition

OPERATIONAL ANALYTICS
Operational Analytics: Common Applications Using Analytical Techniques Technology Overshadows Objectives Executives in virtually every industrial segment have been exploring how to best leverage these techniques to improve operational and business performance. Some markets, particularly consumerfacing ones have made rapid progress, built upon the strong foundations of customer segmentation and technology supporting personalized, multichannel service. Accelerated by connected devices and data proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT), businesses are still at the front end of adoption of certain analytics methods and techniques. The solutions are far-ranging, such as enhancements in traditional statistical methods, model-based techniques that include streaming data, and the use of machine learning. Additionally, some of the techniques can also be applied for a specific effect, such as natural language processing and semantic search. Yet, simultaneous technology advancements have caused a good deal of confusion in the marketplace. Advancements in analytics, particularly predictive and real-time techniques, have coincided with the emergence of industrial IoT and application platforms. The result is that buyers often don’t understand where and how solutions can be applied to optimal effect, nor how to best integrate legacy technology investments. Also, they are uncertain as to whether solutions are ends in and of themselves, or just set the stage for additional improvement. The reality is that both can be true. From an analytics perspective, the array of terms can be overwhelming. Anomaly detection, cognitive

computing, prescriptive analytics, dynamic visualization, artificial intelligence, Fog and edge computing, supervised and unsupervised learning, unstructured data, and machine learning are just a small sample of the many terms, often loosely defined, buzzing about the market. For IoT, the term “platform,” has become ubiquitous in marketing, frequently applied to a variety of technologies, including analytics. Device connectivity, standalone analytics, and cloud-based platforms with IoT functionality are often difficult to distinguish. Capabilities often overlap or are poorly distinguished via marketing. The Technical terms associated with analytics and IoT no longer reside solely within the purview of data scientists and information technology (IT) groups. As operations personnel and business executives have been tasked with building business cases, particularly for analytics, they find it necessary to understand technology definitions and distinctions, many of which are nuanced. The result is business cases and buyers heavily focused on sorting through technology questions. This focus typically centers on four areas, causing analytics projects to devolve into technology discussions, pulling them away from business transformation objectives. These areas are: •Techniques: A common starting point often revolves around comparing different emerging techniques, as these really are the change enablers for digital transformation, along with IoT. Generally, advanced analytics methods are lumped under broad umbrellas of predictive and prescriptive methods. We hear stories from many buyers, comfortable with traditional
OPERATIONAL ANALYTICS means of comparison, who have endured pitch after pitch and ended up unable to compare solutions in meaningful ways. •Users: In a time of “do more with less” thinking, adding headcount, whether via full-time employees or contracted data scientists isn’t palatable or sustainable. Buyers often get bogged down trying to select a solution that seems to limit strain on an internal subject matter experts and/or avoid adding costly data science skills. The potential downside is that the value of analytics might be limited as a tradeoff for reducing organizational disruption. •Tools: Hand in hand with the user issues noted above, self-service tools have proliferated as a natural product development extension for analytics solutions. To support role-based use, many providers are accelerating their development of tools and “sandbox” environments for data scientists and citizen data scientists (engineers leveraging algorithms, statistics, and modeling). An example is rich data visualization and blending, where data streams can be added, connected, and deployed via drop-and-drag methods. These tools are powered by an underlying analytics engine, so it is easy for the citizen data scientist to create and visualize more “aha” moments using data, algorithms, and models. •Delivery: As organizations grapple with cloud-based solutions for software (SaaS), platforms (PaaS), and infrastructure (IaaS), those discussions often run into existing traditional IT structures and service agreements models that make change difficult. While some of these barriers are clearly valid (such as regulatory compliance), they often limit or delay innovation in problem solving. Mapping Analytics to a Maturity Model
A good way to reorient analytics discussions firmly around value is to look at them through the lens of their desired outcome. This can be done by applying a maturity model that breaks down analytics by their impact on people, processes, and things. This outcome-based model better demonstrates what can be achieved in comparison to a technology-focused lens. A maturity model helps companies move away from often-ineffective comparison shopping to be able to focus on their business transformation objectives. Analytics users will find it easier to determine where any one technology system or technique fits in terms of moving an organization to a more mature state. This is especially helpful as most every organization is likely to have wide variations in operational analytics maturity. Beginning with level zero, ARC classifies operational analytics maturity in five maturity stages as it relates to people, processes, and things: Value of Iterative Improvement Maturity is iterative, and many technologies are fundamental enablers for additional improvement, rather than the desired end state, and progress doesn’t need to be equal on all operational fronts. By pursuing iterative improvement, organizations will reach a point where it becomes obvious that additional improvements aren’t worth the cost or drain on resources. In fact, striving for transformational change may be overkill for parts of operations, leading to open-ended pilots and overspending. For example, a best practice will be ideal, but it also might be fine for people to carry it out reactively in applications where something like artificial intelligence might not fit. Or, one-way communication and control of a thing might also be sufficient if it can be determined that there is no more value to be gained. Consider an organization burdened with a dozen or so siloed work and asset systems, supported by workers that use spreadsheets as part of a process and asset decisions.
ARC Operational Analytics Maturity Model
Eliminating manual analysis and pulling data from disparate systems into a real-time system of record for assets doesn’t, in itself, define a transformed operation. However, it does set the foundation for maturational improvements across people, processes, and things.

OPERATIONAL ANALYTICS Work requirements can be more fully understood and aligned to craft skills and availability, enabling higher resource utilization and eliminating costly rework. Analysis of work can set the stage for continual process improvements that extend the lifecycle of assets or improve service reliability. Asset data can flow into capital planning processes to improve investment strategies or stretch budgets. In making these improvements, the organization matures some operational components from informed to effective. By doing so, an organization can then determine if there is an opportunity to automate failure identification via machine learning, for example, perhaps setting the stage for implementing predictive
maintenance strategies. The type of data used, resources involved, and the desired improvement might then inform the technique used; from realtime statistical-driven control to predictive cognitive analytics. Additional technology requirements also become more apparent, as infrastructure visibility and device connection would be fundamental to this improvement. The result is enabling technology seen through the lens of operational analytics maturity. In this scenario, there is no worst-to-best orientation that then prompts ineffective technology comparisons. Instead, there is only the correct fit based on the desired outcomes.

PROCESS ANALYZERS
AIMS: Analyzer Package Project, challenges Flawless initiatives in Analyzer Package Project, another success story by AIMS The execution and completion of Analyzer Package project in timely manners without compromising the quality is a challenging task. It takes huge engineering work, a lot of resources, tremendous amount of experience and in-depth knowledge and skills on on-line analytical systems. It demands a multisystem & discipline EPC approach from one vendor which is difficult to attain and retain in challenging analytical business world. A recently executed, Yibal Khuff Project was one in the row triumph winning story of Analyzer Package Project successfully completely by PDO / Petrofac and AIMS. Total thirty four analyzers with eighteen Gas and sixteen Liquid applications, ten large sized walk-in air conditioned cabinet integrated with a full safety system installed was a huge project of its kind. Analyzer Management and Data Acquisition System (AMADAS) was fully developed and tested during FAT. More than 20 AIMS employees were awarded Appreciation Certificates and Bonuses for the dedication and high quality work demonstrated during the project execution. The Analyzer Package Project had usual inherited challenges during different stages and this paper tells the tale that how past experience helped addressing the issues flawlessly. Analyzer Cabinets: To protect analyzers from heat exposure in hot ambient temperature in the Arabian Desert, double skinned cabinets with fifty millimeter insulation were designed and fabricated in AIMS FAB shop. This was added to air hazardous area classified conditioning system.
Analyzer Cabinet Safety System: Gas direction system & warning strobe light was implemented to prevent accumulation of flammable gases in an event of sample leak inside the cabinet. Purging mechanism to initiate cabinet purge with air was also designed and applied to clear the cabinet from flammable gases to avoid fire incident.
Engineering Unit Discrepancies: The measuring unit of Wobbe Index analyzer, for example, was MJ/m3 whereas customer required Kcal/ m3. The engineering unit was modified to Kcal/m3. Analyzer Management and Data Acquisition System (AMADAS): Analyzer Management and Data Acquisition System was designed, implemented, configured and tested for gas chromatogram analyzers. MODBUS and OPC communication protocol were implemented over TCP/IP hardware. Inherent challenges of serial communication were overcome with a better design approach. Gas Detection Mapping: As location and placement of the Gas Detectors play a critical role in responsiveness of a gas detection system, mapping study was carried out for positioning the gas detectors inside the analyzer cabinets. Maintenance Accessibility & Convenience: Spacious walk-in Cabinets were designed and fabricated with the gas detection system to support maintenance team to carry out maintenance activities inconvenient environment. Quality Assurance and Control (QA/QC) Quality Assurance and Control was a main pillar of the project that assured & maintained superior quality of work in all EPC (Engineering Procurement Construction) stages.

DIGITALIZATION
FieldComm Group: IIoT-based Digitization: FDI and OPC UA Drive Open Information Integration In the era of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industrie 4.0, device and system integration will be paramount to a seamless operation. This article concerns the ongoing collaboration between FieldComm Group and the OPC Foundation to advance open information integration and enterprise data exchange. It describes how the Field Device Integration (FDI™) and OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) standards play a key role in IIoT-based digitization, and in moving field data into the cloud via open platforms such as Microsoft Azure. Introduction The IIoT and Industrie 4.0 are everywhere, and they’re redefining manufacturing with an unprecedented level of impact. While the interoperability of IIoT-based devices and systems will no doubt be a subject of ongoing discussion over the next few years, there are already well-established standards in industrial and manufacturing environments that can accelerate the shift to outcome-based models. For example, OPC UA is a platform-independent, service-oriented architecture that provides standard models for secure and reliable information exchange in industrial automation. Developed by the OPC Foundation, it an established standard for integration and interoperability between factory-level devices, supervisory and control systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), and enterprise applications such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Supply Chain Management (SCM). As a vendor-neutral international standard, OPC UA is also published as the IEC 62541 specification. Like other major consortiums, the OPC Foundation has recognized the power of industry standards and open source. In 2016, it announced the open source availability of OPC UA technology. This move paved the way for greater interoperability and eliminate the need for rigorous multi-vendor testing that was once the norm in industrial automation. Challenges of a connected world With the breadth of the legacy installed base across the global industrial landscape, together with the familiarity of OPC technologies in the manufacturing ecosystem, it stands to reason that OPC UA will accelerate digital transformation through nextgeneration IIoT applications. One of the biggest challenges in this endeavor is the

sheer number of different devices and applications existing from legacy systems all the way through modern industrial assets and to the future. Automation suppliers are struggling to address the IIoT, and doing so, develop products and solutions enabling customers to have all their data and information in a multi-vendor, multi-platform environment (See Fig. 1). IIoT and Industrie 4.0 are all about streamlining manufacturing to the highest degree, but they rely on more than just simple connectivity and communication between disparate equipment assets. These initiatives require a complete understanding of the data from both a syntax and semantic perspective. The volume of data that end-users acquire from the multitude of plant systems is tremendous, and analysts believe it’s only going to increase over the coming years due to the number of devices and applications that will soon be connected. Industrie 4.0 promotes cooperation amongst automation suppliers and their customers to address the demands of asset management, preventative maintenance, and streamlined runtime operation. Organizations like NAMUR, the German chemical industry association, have long focused on asset management and standardized device configuration in a multi-vendor environment. Standardization of devices, including their data and metadata, not only makes configuration easier, but also solves the complex problem of training new plant operators. Training is a significant cost for any manufacturer, and having suppliers agree on data formats makes everyone’s life easier. The Information Technology (IT) and Operations Technology (OT) worlds were traditionally disconnected, which prevented industrial organizations from sharing key information between the two realms. But despite the growing convergence of IT and OT, users really don’t want all the raw data from devices in the OT world to be forced on IT systems. They would rather perform complex analytics on the data at the sensor level to obtain only important information, and then move it into cloud-based applications. The information integration between the IT and OT world depends on reliable high-speed data acquisition systems in the OT world acquiring the data, and then leveraging adaptable configurable analytical software transforming the data into useful information for the IT systems. There is a current trend whereby intelligent decisions are made about plant assets and process automation
DIGITALIZATION with the assistance of enterprise tools. Common tasks such as preventative maintenance and tracking information to know when machinery needs repair can increase efficiency and lower the cost of operations. By having the right data and information, personnel can anticipate problems long before they occur and take appropriate corrective actions to keep the plant up and running. Collaboration on integration strategies Today, the industrial automation ecosystem continues to expand through the cooperation of industry organizations that possess deep subject matter experience and knowledge. These organizations are leveraging their know-how and data models using the OPC UA common framework for open collaboration between disciplines in the connected enterprise (See Fig. 2). Standards organizations that understand the requirements of IIoT and Industrie 4.0 are working together to promote data interchange across heterogeneous domains and industries – something essential to help enable a fully digital industrial economy. The goal is to standardize on the complex data and information of the respective organizations to provide an infrastructure for secure, reliable information integration and interoperability between previously disconnected devices and applications. Driven by the ever-increasing demands for process automation data from information systems, a wide range of automation industry stakeholders are beginning to develop their desired architectures for more open interfaces. They seek to break down proprietary architecture barriers between field devices and ultimately cloud-based computing platforms. In view of this trend, the architects of FDI partnered with the OPC Foundation to include in the design of FDI the OPC UA technology that defines field devices and field device integration in the context of FDI technology. Specifically, the technologies share the same information model that defines the context of field devices in process automation. The goal is to ensure that as systems evolve an open pathway to field device information is assured. FieldComm Group, which is responsible for ongoing development of FDI technology, has collaborated with the OPC Foundation to provide a solution allowing data and metadata from intelligent device networks to be consumed by generic applications and, more importantly, to have this data converted into information that can be communicated to the IT world and leveraged by cloud-based applications. According to the OPC Foundation’s President and Executive Director, Thomas J. Burke, there is increased
recognition throughout the automation sector of the importance of reliable interoperability and seamless information integration. “Without question, measurement and control technology will keep advancing at a rapid pace, and as such, there is a need to adapt to change and leverage new innovations as quickly as possible,” Burke said. “Having a solid infrastructure and abstract data modeling architecture will enable devices and applications that don’t exist today to be seamlessly plugged into existing assets. The value of legacy systems and their integration into the manufacturing applications of the future cannot be overestimated. Our work with FieldComm Group and other standards organizations will ensure that we have an effective strategy for taking data from sensors and other devices, converting it into useful information, and then pushing it into SAP and Microsoft applications and vise versa, truly realizing bi-directional communication for IT-based applications to push data back down into the OT world.” Burke continued, “It has been rewarding to collaborate with FieldComm Group on crucial technology initiatives. Our organizations have a common strategy and vision. We understand the value of implementing the best specification and certification processes, and providing technology to our respective communities to bring world-class products to market.” FieldComm President and CEO Ted Masters has a similar outlook on leveraging the information that comes from intelligent field devices, and believes the FDI standard provides a proven solution allowing end-users to better manage their assets by having a standardized device configurations that are independent of the vendors and networking technologies involved with their respective installations. “FDI meets the demand for a universal, standardized and an interoperable technique to comprehensively describe automation components. It is vital for everyday purposes like device configuration, device replacement, maintenance, diagnostics or audit trails – all essential building blocks in a modern field device management system,” Masters said. “At one time, every supplier handled device configuration differently, and if you wanted to make a change, it required a huge amount of engineering overhead, as well as an additional training burden. By having standardization, this issue becomes a lot simpler. No longer are companies required to devote costly engineering hours to do complex conversion between different vendors’ equipment.” Masters added, “With FDI, the true potential of decentralization, transparency, integration and a central view of all data and functions can be fully realized.”

DIGITALIZATION Creation of a companion specification In automation systems with field instruments from a variety of different vendors, there is a need to reduce the effort for installation, version management and device operation. This requirement can only be met with an open and standardized device integration solution. For this reason, FieldComm Group has specified a standard architecture for device integration that is based on IEC 61804-Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL) for the description of devices and OPC UA. Typical use cases for this solution include: •Interaction between FDI Clients and FDI Servers •Integration of new communication protocols (i.e., FDI communication servers) •Access to device information by non-FDI-aware OPC UA Clients, such as archiving tools, maintenance tools, asset management, or ERP systems FieldComm Group and the OPC Foundation cooperated on a companion specification defining how the information of a field device – described by an Electronic Device Description (EDD) document – is mapped to OPC UA Objects, Methods and Variables. The information model is primarily based on the OPC UA for Devices specification; in fact, most of the OPC UA for Devices model has been driven by FDI requirements (See Fig. 3). FieldComm Group’s Director of Integration Technology, Achim Laubenstein, stated, “FDI technology manages information from intelligent field devices during their entire lifecycle – from configuration, commissioning and diagnostics to calibration, making one-off solutions for different devices obsolete. The standardization of field device information facilitates the development of native OPC UA applications that support the OPC UA device information model.” In addition to the device model, FDI defines how communication topologies of the automation system, representing the entire communication infrastructure, should be represented in an OPC UA AddressSpace. The comprehensive set of services provided by OPC UA enables the “how” of system integration. The FDI communication server information model is used for integration of non-native field protocols, and as such, supports the integration of communication with devices in heterogeneous, hierarchical networks, as well as the use of any communication hardware. Burke commented on the collaborative development process: “The hardest part of the work on the OPC UA information model was getting agreement and standardization of the data and metadata across different vendors’ devices,” Burke said. “FieldComm

Group has been doing this for years, and provided a very rich data and information model that suppliers incorporate directly into their FOUNDATION Fieldbus, HART and WirelessHART products.” Most recently, FieldComm Group and the OPC Foundation have collaborated on an OPC UA Server interface to the FDI Server. Major global automation suppliers that are active in both organizations are driving this effort. The OPC UA architecture is built into industrie 4.0, and there are multiple test beds under development within the industrial Internet community. One of the major test beds will show how OPC UA is directly incorporated into the FDI Server to provide seamless information integration into the IT world via the OPC UA interfaces. Cloud-based solution for plant data FieldComm Group’s Integration Working Group is enhancing the FDI/OPC UA information model specification to provide semantics for machinereadable information. This specification will allow cloud-based applications to process field device information without extra configuration. Industrial organizations will now gain seamless information integration into computing platforms like the Microsoft Azure cloud by leveraging the OPC UA companion specification. This capability will significantly enhance compatibility and interoperability in the new digital world, said Erich Barnstedt, principle software engineering lead at Microsoft. “Microsoft is the only technology provider with the ability to transform the OPC UA data model and offer it in the cloud,” Barnstedt said. “This is achieved by enabling both OPC UA Client/Server and Publisher/ Subscriber connections to the cloud. Applications that used to run on-premise can now run globally in the cloud without having to change the interface. By mapping FieldComm Group’s data model to OPC UA, it is now possible to use robust services available for OPC UA through the Azure cloud.” Microsoft’s Azure IoT Suite is intended to connect devices and other assets; capture the diverse and voluminous data they generate; integrate and orchestrate the flow of that data; and manage, analyze and present it as useful information to people who need to make better decisions. There is a cloud bridge, which is essentially a software component acting as an OPC Client towards one or several OPC UA Servers and relaying data to a cloud-based messaging gateway. Thanks to the latest technology developments, enterprise intelligence can be deployed to reinforce the use of data and establish analytics-based decisions.
DIGITALIZATION Such digital transformation involves reengineering workflows around enhanced and consistent information, and changing data management paradigms. Outlook for the future FieldComm Group and the OPC Foundation are committed to developing complete infrastructures and solutions for seamless information integration in industrial automation applications. Both organizations recognize they must provide standards that help solve real-world problems and create new opportunities. This includes ongoing enhancements to the FDI standard and potentially incorporating other organizations’ networking technologies into a common integration architecture.
not interoperating together in a seamless manner. This expectation now requires multi-vendor and multi-platform information integration from the sensor to the cloud. The days of the IT and OT worlds not communicating are also waning, with both sides seeking to convert data and metadata from plant assets into meaningful information. The activities of FieldComm Group working with the OPC Foundation will help make this a reality.
Conclusion Proprietary solutions in industrial automation are quickly becoming a thing of the past. The engineers and end-users of today – primarily driven by their experiences with consumer electronics – no longer will be satisfied with products from different vendors

When a Dream Needs a Gentle Push to Give It Wings-Sponsored by Analytical Division Of ISA Growing up as the youngest child in a family of five, abandoned by your father, neglected by your elder brother and sister, with just your mother who is a day laborer in a physically unwell state of health and with the dreams of one day becoming a Chemistry Professor is really hard. This is exactly the condition of Mohammed Sajib Sheik, a 10 year old boy hailing from a slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sajib’s father abandoned the family a long time ago. His elder brother and sister are both married and living their own happy lives while almost totally neglecting the existence of their own mother and brother. Sajib’s mother, Sofia Begum works as a day laborer to provide for herself and Sajib. But, because of being physically unwell, she isn’t able to go to work daily and so the responsibility of taking care of his mother and himself falls on the meek shoulders of young Sajib. He has to works after school, selling newspapers and water bottles to meet their needs. Like all other kids of his age, Sajib too loves playing cricket. He sings as well. But unlike every other kid whose role model might be a cricketer in this cricket crazy nation, Sajib’s role model is Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the world famous Swedish Chemist and founder of the Nobel Prizes, and hence his love for Chemistry. Once, at school, during a session of Science, the teacher was teaching about mixtures and it was a little above the understanding capabilities of a regular Sixth Grader, but Sajib easily understood the concepts and was given the opportunity to perform experiment in front of the whole class, and that too very successfully. He is passionate about his dreams to become a Chemistry professor one day and that is clearly reflected in his academics. But the only thing in his way to achieve that dream is the current situation he is in. No one to help him progress with his education, no one to guide him and help him plot his next steps 68 Automation

in education. And this is where C2C has come in to help him. C2C has taken Sajib under its wings and are supporting him by providing 1000BDT per month to help take care of their accommodation needs so that he can use the money he earns by himself to help complete his education and pursue his dreams of becoming a Chemistry Professor. C2C has a really good idea of how Sajib should carry on his education so as to achieve his dream. The Bangladeshi educational system is basically divided into 7 levels: •Pre-primary: Play School to Kindergarten •Primary: Grade 1 to Grade 5 •Junior School: Grade 6 to Grade 8 •Secondary School: Grade 9 to Grade 10 •Higher Secondary: Grade 11 and Grade 12 •Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years •Master’s Degree: 1 year According to the above given system, Sajib is now in Junior School and has a minimum of 9 years of education left to finally be able to achieve his dream. As per the Government curriculum, basic Science will be taught to all students from Grade 6 to Grade 8. From Grade 9, Science will be broken down into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. And it is also from Grade 9 that the education stream will be divided into Science, Arts and Commerce and this will be followed up until Grade 12. So, Sajib will have to opt for the Science stream from Grade 9 and then continue his education to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and then opt for a Master’s Degree in Chemistry to increase his chances of becoming a Chemistry Professor. Sajib is currently being sponsored by the Analysis Division of ISA. With a helping and guiding hand behind him, Sajib can easily achieve his dream and build a brighter future for himself and his family.
