Dear DMS Members, 15 years ago when I came to the Middle East, End-Users were committed to pushing for local support. Understandable when most support in those days was based out of Europe and the cost of lost production over the time taken to actually fix the problem was high. At the time the cost of locating support industry in the region was relatively low with the cost of living in the Middle East then much lower. Companies started to pour in to the region and End-Users demanded more local support and manufacturing. Seems fair and so more companies move full operations in to the region requiring more management, larger villas and schooling. But then rents (being the largest personal expense) started climbing, government departments grew in size, electricity and water costs lost their subsidies and purchase taxes became more and more numerous. Bottom-line; the cost of doing business in the region has become extremely expensive. Ordinarily the cost would have been borne by the customer but then came a global recession followed a few years later by a dramatic fall in the price of oil, which, as the main economic driver, meant that End-Users were no longer prepared to carry the burden pushing for more and more discounted prices. Unfortunately this has been an international challenge with many manufacturers not able to offer technical support anymore. Companies have had to cut back on 1st-tier support and we’re not just talking about the Middle East.

The answer is however one that most regional End-Users (decreed by governments) are loathed to accept due to perceived security issues. I’ve said this before I know but we all need to get on-board and figure-out how this is going to work. There needs to be dialogue between the government legislatures, the End-Users, the manufacturers, the networking and cyber-security industries and standards organisations to provide structure and guidance. If they can operational costs will come down. Kind Regards,

DMS ANALYTICS

2019 Boost in UAE Clean Energy Focus Projects and investment focus suggest that 2019 will bring further progress in renewable sector in the UAE. So far, the UAE invested $2.2billion in the renewable investment, and in 2019 clean energy investments are expected to increase.

Other projects that will provide sources of renewable energy also include Nuclear Power Plant that is progressing further each day, as well Waste to Energy Plant under Dubai Municipality which is expecting completion by the end of 2019 or early 2020.

Several major solar schemes are planned, including ‘’Noor’’ which will be the world’s largest independent solar plant with capacity of 1.17 gigawatts and cost of $871 million. Furthermore, in May 2018, it was announced that Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park CSP capacity will increase to 1000MW by 2020. Masdar and France’s EDF Group have received $650 million in financing through banks and are targeting the project completion by 2020.

With the global focus on preserving the environment that is more prominent than ever before, the UAE naturally realized the importance on the focus of clean energy investment. With the EXPO 2020 approaching and its emphasis on sustainability, it is essential that UAE 2019 focus is in effect investment in the renewable sector.

Oil Sector 2019 Outlook In 2018 it has been predicted that the oil sector will recover in 2019. With Saudi Arabia’s commitment to lower production output and in turn preventing the oil prices from falling, the region, and more specifically UAE can see a more stable projects scenario in 2019. There will be expected adjustments with ADNOC’s new brand and the focus placed on cost optimization and efficiency. Nonetheless, the industry is expecting to see more tenders, new opportunities and further progress in existing projects. ADNOC invested $45 billion to upgrade the Ruwais Complex and the new refinery is currently under FEED contract evaluation. This mega project is promising exciting opportunities for the industry and sub projects that are expected to be initiated as

4 Automation

a result. Further projects in refining sector include the Crude Flexibility project which has been executed and expecting several sub contracts to be awarded in 2019. Other sectors are also experiencing tender awards, such as Hail and Ghasha Megaproject by ADNOC Sour Gas which is currently under EPC tender evaluation. ADNOC Onshore North East Bab Al Dabbiya ASR is also under EPC bid evaluation with award expected in Q1 2019. Overall, 2019 is a year of many expectations for the UAE’s oil sector. The industry is looking into ways of adjusting to ADNOC’s new strategies and are expecting various new opportunities to unveil throughout the year.

Our clamp-on ultrasonic measurement systems FLUXUS measure virtually anything that flows, liquids as well as gases. Today, non-invasive, ultrasonic flow measurement is only an outsider measuring technique in the technical sense: Clamp-on ultrasonic transducers are simply attached to the outside of the pipe – without any interruption to operation or any risk of leakage. As our products meet the highest requirements of industrial production, namely the highest level of safety for people and the environment on the one hand and the highest level of plant availability on the other, the former outsiders have long since become extremely popular. We at FLEXIM, are particularly proud of our pioneering work carried out to transfer the clamp-on ultrasonic technology to the non-invasive flow measurement of gases. Today, FLEXIM is the only supplier of clamp-on ultrasonic systems for non-invasive flow measurement of liquids and gases with SIL certification worldwide.

Where is SCADA Heading? By Mark Sen Gupta, Research Director, ARC Advisory Group While SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) technology has been around for quite a while, today’s SCADA systems are easier to integrate and provide improved capabilities and functionalities. More than ever before, today’s owner-operators use SCADA technology to help improve operations and link operations to business processes to improve business performance management and maximize return on existing capital investments in systems and assets. However, data requirements are expanding, placing strains on the tradi-tional SCADA architecture and technology. New technology advances promise not only to alleviate the strain but to change the way data is gathered.

Owner-operators today use SCADA technology to help improve operations and link operations to business processes to improve business per-formance management and maximize return on existing capital investments in systems and assets. SCADA: King of Data When it comes to data in industries such oil & gas, water & wastewater, and electrical transmission & distribution, SCADA is king. It is responsible for nearly all data flow from the field and into the enterprise. This has been the case for over half a century. SCADA has largely replaced manual data collection and remotely manned operation centers. SCADA applications reach over hundreds of miles to pull in data from far-flung assets. This has also helped reduce risk by reducing the number of employees needed in the field. SCADA applications have expanded as the need for data grows. Often, in the past, this expansion has been limited both by the network’s capabilities and operational costs.

Technology Advances Today’s ever-growing requirement for data has little to do with immediate operations themselves and more to do with ancillary needs as owner-operators look for new ways to reduce cost. Operations is the traditional “customer” of the SCADA system, but the customer base is expanding. SCADA data customers now include the organization’s ac-counting, reliability, optimization, supply chain, and business management groups, as well as external customers. As the customer base has expanded, so has the use of new technology.

44 Automation

| January 2019

Today’s SCADA Systems Must Serve Up Data to a Wide Variety of “Customers” To that end, SCADA suppliers continue to offer more flexible hardware with added intelligence, emphasizing total solutions by coupling hard-ware and software with service packages. Smarter “edge” devices can host applications that traditionally ran in a central location due to the required computing power. These newer devices allow more analytics and calculations in the field, but also generate more data. The higher computing potential also allows for better network connectivity and bandwidth support. Additionally, suppliers are offering a wider range of web-enabled ad-vanced applications and packaged solutions, particularly for users seeking to integrate SCADA with business and enterprise-level applications and supply chains. Beyond the traditional data gathering and control functions, the addition of business intelligence-enabled applications has enhanced the value of SCADA systems. These new applications give users better insight into the economics of their operations, easier ability to validate nominations and pipeline allocations, and tools to track carbon emissions, which aids regulatory compliance. Many of the top SCADA suppliers offer a full suite of products and ser-vices, including remote terminal units (RTUs), networking technologies, and associated controllers. Service offerings cover hardware support, software applications, communications, and systems integration. Increasingly, suppliers are also moving toward open, industry-standardized technology, including standards-based RTUs, general-purpose PLCs, and third-party network infrastructures based on commercial information technology. This is partly due to the cost of hardware development, but mainly due to the more rapid technology advancement of off-the-shelf technology. Another key technology advancement that is foundational to the SCADA application are networks. Initially reliant on low-bandwidth networks like leased dial-up phone lines and other serial connections, SCADA has moved to microwave, radio, and satellite. Recent introductions of IP-based communications, both radio and

IP communications remove the “shackle” of dedicated point-to-point, 5G connectivity is within sight. This begs the question: “Why continue to use the SCADA system to collect data master-slave communications. that doesn’t relate directly to operations?”

Recent introductions of IP-based communications, both radio and cellular, have allowed for increases not only in bandwidth, but also communication flexibility. IP communications remove the “shackle” of dedicated point-to-point, master-slave communications. Understandably, cybersecurity concerns continue to grow. Owner-operators have reported a number of breaches recently. The geopolitical climate has increased anxiety across all industries. Most critical infrastructure relies on SCADA technology, making the systems a prime target. Service providers, suppliers, and owner-operators are scrambling to improve gaps in cybersecurity to better protect these vital systems and their data.

Changing Approach to Data Collection With the expansion of Industry 4.0- and Industrial IoT-type approaches, the number of data customers continues to grow. Increasingly, customers are moving

Instead, applications have begun circumventing the SCADA system altogether and pulling data directly from the field. Some data continues to pass through the SCADA system because the operations group needs that data as well. Cloud applications are going directly to the field in many industries. In some cases, this is done to circumvent cybersecurity concerns at the site, as operational technologists avoid the restrictions or limitations imposed by the enterprise IT organization.

Conclusions The need to gather data will continue to grow. As such, the “DA” part of SCADA will continue, but be distributed across multiple applications and platforms. In many situations, it makes little sense to poll the field multiple times, especially where adequate power is an issue. The traditional role of SCADA in operating remote assets will continue but become more focused on its core purpose. This is partly due to the licensing costs, which most vendors still do by tag. Lifecycle costs will play a key role in the SCADA landscape and will be an area of disruption as non-traditional vendors begin to create applications to gather data for different reasons entirely but will look to traditional SCADA roles for growth.

When a Dream Needs a Gentle Push to Give It Wings-Sponsored by Analytical Division Of ISA Growing up as the youngest child in a family of five, abandoned by your father, neglected by your elder brother and sister, with just your mother who is a day laborer in a physically unwell state of health and with the dreams of one day becoming a Chemistry Professor is really hard. This is exactly the condition of Mohammed Sajib Sheik, a 10 year old boy hailing from a slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sajib’s father abandoned the family a long time ago. His elder brother and sister are both married and living their own happy lives while almost totally neglecting the existence of their own mother and brother. Sajib’s mother, Sofia Begum works as a day laborer to provide for herself and Sajib. But, because of being physically unwell, she isn’t able to go to work daily and so the responsibility of taking care of his mother and himself falls on the meek shoulders of young Sajib. He has to works after school, selling newspapers and water bottles to meet their needs. Like all other kids of his age, Sajib too loves playing cricket. He sings as well. But unlike every other kid whose role model might be a cricketer in this cricket crazy nation, Sajib’s role model is Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the world famous Swedish Chemist and founder of the Nobel Prizes, and hence his love for Chemistry. Once, at school, during a session of Science, the teacher was teaching about mixtures and it was a little above the understanding capabilities of a regular Sixth Grader, but Sajib easily understood the concepts and was given the opportunity to perform experiment in front of the whole class, and that too very successfully. He is passionate about his dreams to become a Chemistry professor one day and that is clearly reflected in his academics. But the only thing in his way to achieve that dream is the current situation he is in. No one to help him progress with his education, no one to guide him and help him plot his next steps

in education. And this is where C2C has come in to help him. C2C has taken Sajib under its wings and are supporting him by providing 1000BDT per month to help take care of their accommodation needs so that he can use the money he earns by himself to help complete his education and pursue his dreams of becoming a Chemistry Professor. C2C has a really good idea of how Sajib should carry on his education so as to achieve his dream. The Bangladeshi educational system is basically divided into 7 levels: •Pre-primary: Play School to Kindergarten •Primary: Grade 1 to Grade 5 •Junior School: Grade 6 to Grade 8 •Secondary School: Grade 9 to Grade 10 •Higher Secondary: Grade 11 and Grade 12 •Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years •Master’s Degree: 1 year According to the above given system, Sajib is now in Junior School and has a minimum of 9 years of education left to finally be able to achieve his dream. As per the Government curriculum, basic Science will be taught to all students from Grade 6 to Grade 8. From Grade 9, Science will be broken down into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. And it is also from Grade 9 that the education stream will be divided into Science, Arts and Commerce and this will be followed up until Grade 12. So, Sajib will have to opt for the Science stream from Grade 9 and then continue his education to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and then opt for a Master’s Degree in Chemistry to increase his chances of becoming a Chemistry Professor. Sajib is currently being sponsored by the Analysis Division of ISA. With a helping and guiding hand behind him, Sajib can easily achieve his dream and build a brighter future for himself and his family. Automation

THE WATER PROMISE – DMS Global joins hands with WATER RELIEF.ORG Clean water has become one of our most precious resources in the 21st century, in fact, one in nine people live without access to clean and drinkable water. The water crisis is real. It’s affecting men, women, children, families, and farmers. Women and children are spending hours a day fetching dirty water which leads to illness and disease, robbing entire communities of their futures. Lack of access to safe water and proper sanitation harms health. When health is affected, it limits education, leading to a cycle of poverty.

A bold commitment should be made to make sure everyone gets a chance to drink water from a reliable source. DMS Global has joined hands with WATERRELIEF.ORG, a nonprofit charitable organization in helping to plant more fresh water wells and pumps throughout Africa and Asia. Recently, DMS Global has taken an initiative to providing funds to dig a well in Ukhiya Village, Cox Bazar District, Chittagong division in Bangladesh. This is to help the refugees from Myanmar who are currently residing in Bangladesh. Every gift has an impact. Let’s share this gift of water with everyone.
