Dear DMS Members, Insurance is a weird thing. To be fair it’s more the risk assessment. Humans are notoriously poor at assessing the risk of failure or harm and thus sometimes purchase insurance and sometimes not. Bicycle helmets or seat belts are a perfect example. Some assess the risk as minimal whilst others are far more cautious. Some take into account the fact that track-records prove that they are excess to requirement whilst others perceive risk due to the power of consensus. Who is right? Both are right since any assessment is about perceived risk but, surely using, even if proven otherwise, is the best approach to cover the unexpected, or not factored, upset? That is as long as the cost is not a limiting factor that is. In a former job it amazed me how, just because lightning had never struck, the feeling was that it never would and so the plant was safe and would not suffer a shutdown due to a strike. The Middle East in particular would use this logic even though we experience lightning strikes every year and the insurance (a lightning/ surge protection device) would only cost a few hundred dollars or so and save a shutdown that could save hundreds of thousands of dollars of lost production. A lightning strike could cause a shutdown system to shutdown when there was no danger to the actual process and yet it has never been perceived as a real requirement. So why then is cyber-security, which costs so much more to install, is considered a real necessity? The answer, I believe, is in the fact that the risk to shutdown due to a lightning strike can be easily defined. We know what it is, how it will affect the process and how to fix the problem. Cyber-security on the other hand is an unknown. We don’t always know who the attacker is, where the attack will come from or how it will affect the systems. On top of all that we have no idea how much it will cost to put right. Lightning damage is easy to understand then whilst cyber-security requires a huge amount of understanding with instrumentation and automation engineers having to work with IT engineers to create an understanding of the OT environment. Cyber-security for OT has been around since the control system environment moved over to ethernet switching technologies effectively bringing the internet to the control level. In the early days air-gaps were considered enough. Then DMZ, defence in depth and zones and conduits. Now we have data diodes but, until those on the plant floor develop enough understanding about the why nots and wherefores, we will always be in danger since defences, no matter how strong and deep, will always be breached. We need understanding. We need learning. We need collaboration between governments and standards organisations.we need direction. Kind Regards,

Kind Regards,

DMS ANALYTICS

PETRONAS Redevelopment of Bokor Phase 3 PETRONAS has been affected with the oil price drop in mid-2014 but quickly responded with cost-cutting, putting some projects on hold and the company selling some assets. With the oil price recovery last year, this has helped the company boost its profits which raised its spending for upstream projects in Malaysia. PETRONAS is expected to drill around 120 wells and maintain 25 exploration wells in Malaysia for this year. The Bokor Phase 3 Redevelopment is an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project which will consist of Water and Gas Injection Facilities, Central Processing Platform (CPP) and Satellite Producer and Injector Platforms. PETRONAS holds the 60% equity interest of the production sharing contract and Shell holding the remaining 40% interest of the project. By Q3 2014, PETRONAS issued a tender for conceptual study for the project and awarded Ranhill Worley a contract to revise the design by the next quarter. Expenditure cuts have slowed the progress of the project but by Q1 2016, but PETRONAS and Shell have revived the plans for the CCP. In Q2 2017, the FEED, PMC, and EPC were awarded by the client.

By Q3 2018, the first steel cut for the fabrication of the CCP’s topside and substructure took place and is now moving progressively ahead of time and underway for fabrication. The wellhead platform will be installed in Q1 2019, the first gas is expected in Q4 2019 and the project will be commissioned in Q2 2020. PETRONAS plans to pay the government a higher dividend than what was promised to help expand its core business portfolio in the country. It is the world’s third-biggest LNG exporter after Qatar and Australia, and the sole manager of Malaysia’s oil and gas reserves. Upstream activities will be modestly increased to assist the company’s revenue increase regularly.

Malaysia’s Jimah East Power Plant To Be Completed By The End of 2019 In Malaysia’s power sector today, coal plays a big role in this being imported from Indonesia (62%), Australia (24%), Russia(11%) and South Africa(2%). Power generation is highly dependent on fossil fuels, 53% coal, 42% natural gas, and 5% hydro, along with other forms of renewable energy. The liberalization of Malaysia’s power sector will bring about great opportunities for Malaysia and it has gone through improvements since 2009 for it to achieve this today. The Jimah East Power Plant project is a 2,000 megawatts (MW) greenfield coal-fired power station in Jimah, Negri Sembilan, or known as Project 3B. Located at a strategic site, it is an essential part of Malaysia’s future energy development plans which is vital to the security of power supply of the country. The plant will have a designed capacity or 2 coal-fired power stations with 1,000 MW each and 2 ultra-supercritical (USC) generators that can each produce one million kilowatts (kW) of energy.

The tender of the project was released in 2013 and awarded a year after. The Energy Commission (EC) had to retender the project earlier in 2015 due to some issues then TNB has signed a share sale and purchase agreement (SSPA) with 1MDB for the acquisition of the 1MDB’s 70% stake in Jimah East Power (JEP). The construction works started in 2016 and is going on schedule. The project 3B is part of the government’s drive to export energy efficiency technology to emerging markets. Earlier this year, the development of the project has progressed putting the project on schedule to achieve commercial operations by Q2 2019 and fully completed by Q4 2019.

POST SHOW REPORT

“ISA is a key part of our core strategy for marketing CCC because it is the closest to our customers which is a key part of our messaging. These regional shows are perfect. They’re in beautiful locations. The attendance has been phenomenal. The other amazing thing is to see the customers lined up in the middle of the aisle. It’s like a spillover which you don’t get to see that in a lot of shows.” Richard Hall, VP Marketing and Product Management, Compressor Controls Corporation

“HIMA is present at ISA events because the ISA events organize a very effective platform for us to see our customers, to communicate with our customers, also get in touch with our customers and understand what are their needs and wishes.” Peter Sieber, Vice President Region China, Vice President Norms & Standards, HIMA Germany

“The inaugural ISA Thailand event was a well-organized event that enabled me to network with the new automation professionals in Thailand and, at the same time, re-connect with global automation fraternity. I have gained good professional insights from the papers presented. The opportunity to present my paper enabled me to directly interact with participants, which further broadened my professional perspectives. I hope to see ISA events to be further expanded to shape the regional automation industries.” Ir. V.R.Harindran, Sr Custodian, I & C PETRONAS, President- ISA Malaysia

“For a 1st the ISA Thailand Section Event 2018 was successful. Many End Users attended the event and for our field, ICS Cyber Security, we had good contacts with Decision Makers and Subject Matter Experts within the End Users. We were happy about the quality of the presentations dealing with Cyber Security and the conference room was full, which is great for Cyber Security. We had a great dialogue with the other Cyber Security Experts and the public had a lot of interesting questions. It’s clear that ICS Cyber Security is a top priority for the Thai big players and it would be interesting to have a forum dedicated to ICS Cyber Security in Thai Critical Infrastructures to be able to share best practices and lessons learn.” Gilles Loridon, CEO, Global Security Network

DIGITALIZATION

Key Digital Transformation IT Concepts for Operations By Eric C. Cosman, ARC Advisory Group

Overview Many industrial companies have shifted from exploring the benefits of digital transformation to determining how to execute on its promise. For operations personnel, this means implementing things like remote monitoring, connected and optimized plants, digital procedures, predictive asset failure detection, or outcome-based services, as examples. Doing so requires converging modern information technology (IT) concepts and software with operational technology (OT) and processes. For operations, successful convergence first begins with understanding key digital transformation IT concepts and how they will impact operations. Rather than focus on the digital transformation IT concepts through a technical lens, let’s look at them in terms of their implication on industrial operations. This IT/OT convergence means more operations and line of businesses (LOBs) are being asked to process ideas and make decisions outside their normal areas of expertise. In one example, it might be asking them to understand and implement complex solutions using analytics and machine learning, including very advanced math concepts. Or, it could mean pushing them to rely on microservice software architecture to create, deploy, and scale applications to solve operational challenges and foresee the impact these technologies will have on operations.

Key Digital Transformation IT Concepts As IT/OT convergence has rapidly escalated, particularly via a growing number of pilot projects over the last eighteen months, a few digital transformation-related IT terms consistently pop up in conversations about operational optimization of processes and assets. It would be helpful for operations people to be aware of and understand these terms. Rather than focus on the digital transformation IT concepts through a technical lens, this ARC report will define them in terms of their implication on industrial operations and business outcomes.

ways to create, consume, and support software. It is critical for supporting some of the benefits of modern software, such as rapid scalability and ubiquitous mobility. Additionally, cloud pricing models can shift costs from capital to operating budgets. Some deployment nuances within the cloud that are worth knowing. These include: • Public Cloud: computing services offered by thirdparty providers over the public Internet, making them available to anyone who wants to use or purchase them. • Private Cloud: computing services offered either over the Internet or a private internal network and only to select users, instead of the general public. • Hybrid Cloud: A computing environment that combines a public cloud and an on-premise, private cloud by allowing data and applications to be shared between them, managed by a set of common tools. • Hosted (or Virtual) Private Cloud: A computing environment dedicated to a user’s account. It is logically isolated from other virtual networks in the cloud. • Serverless Computing: A cloud workload model that eliminates the need to manage server hardware and software. Users are charged only for the resources used, rather than for infrastructure (servers) or platform access (subscription).

Microservices Microservices-based software is a core concept of modern cloud application platforms. For these platforms, hardware and software are provided as a menu of smaller (micro) services rather than a large application or system. The services can operate in standalone fashion where needed or combined logically using programming.

Cloud Deployment Vendors are moving aggressively to develop new solutions or retrofit existing solutions in the cloud. For operations, the cloud provides much more flexible

Platform and Microservices Model

DIGITALIZATION Examples of typical microservices include various analytics and machine learning, data services, security, mobility, IoT/edge services, etc. Addi-tionally, a provider may bundle microservices into packaged applications of varying “size” that often have specific vertical use, such as asset per-formance management, shop-floor maintenance, logistics management, etc.

to deploy operational applications. In some instances, operations might need to develop and maintain ALM skill and support. Or, they can opt to leverage existing IT-department skills. Either way, the ability to use ALM tools will become mandatory for effective use of PaaS.

Platform

DevOps unifies software development and operations processes, which is key to agile software development. It injects speed and scale into software development by reducing development cycles and making software releases more dependable while ensuring applications align with business objectives. It drives the design of microservices, collaboration tools, monitoring, etc. It’s important as an underlying philosophy of digital transformation, one that operations will be required to embrace and support to effectively use platforms. Operations personnel, particularly those managing automation, will be required to align their processes and skills to support a DevOps approach—likely managed by IT—for creating, testing, deploying, and managing operational applications.

A modern Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) is the “store” you visit when you want to purchase or lease various microservices, often called “tools.” Many times, providers position themselves as platforms when the model is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). It’s a key distinction in terms of whether they expose solution microservices (code) and data for you to build upon.

DevOps

Development Environment (Cockpit, Sandbox)

From an operations perspective, it’s important to think about platforms in terms of how you want to leverage a platform. It comes down to resources. Do you expect to build apps yourself? Is it important to have an app marketplace where an ecosystem of providers is constantly creating and offering third-party apps and microservices that you can use off-the-shelf? Do you prefer having a single supplier provide most of the needed functionality? With platform-based services, users can choose and deploy solutions with much more freedom around length of use and depth of services. This is fundamentally different than the traditional “all-in” purchasing of larger software. Here is a link to an ARC market study on cloud application platforms with IoT.

Application Lifecycle Management This concept relates to software development in PaaS solutions. It covers a range of typical IT functions such as code governance, process flows, production, testing, etc. While IT-centric, application lifecycle management is a critical skill for organizations that want to use PaaS

The working environment in a platform, often designated a “cockpit” or “sandbox,” is where data is managed and applications are built, deployed, and administered. This is also where security and user access are also usually overseen. The “dev environment” is primarily for use by IT-side developers. As solution providers continue to refine their offerings, the dev environment will become more important to operations. Low-code application development tools are making it increasingly suitable for some non-developer use. In the market, this is being done by solution providers that increasingly offer tools for “non-data scientists” (e.g., engineers). As operations integrate more of these engineers and subject matter experts (SMEs) into analytics and application deployment, an operational user experience is increasingly key to platform adoption and use. Currently, many platform user interfaces (UIs) are intended for use at the IT and enterprise levels. Redesign might be needed to get the UIs to conform better to typical operational human-machine interfaces (HMIs) standards.

Artificial Intelligence Technically speaking, the possibilities of AI fall into two camps: broad and narrow. Broad systems are capable

Automation

| December 2018

87

DIGITALIZATION of human behavior (think Terminator or HAL 9000). Broad AI doesn’t exist yet, though we are moving toward aspects of it via things like autonomous vehicles. Narrow AI is important, as it replicates human capability, not behavior. In operations, AI has quickly become marketing speak for things like machine learning, natural language processing, and chatbots, all examples of narrow AI.

Containers (e.g., Docker and Kubernetes) This term came on the heels of cloud and platforms. It is a way to develop and use applications basically anywhere on physical or virtual hardware, without the need for deep expertise. Kubernetes and Dockers are platforms for doing so. ARC analyst, Harry Forbes, continues to track container advancements. Containers aren’t new technology, but they have powerful potential when it comes to industrial operations. Containers make it very easy to develop, deliver, and manage applications. For operations, this potentially removes the need to rely on proprietary runtime environments for distributed control and automation.

Industrial Network Edge Like its operational industrial edge counterpart, the network industrial edge occurs at the logical extremes of an information technology network. It consists of the equipment and devices capable of data communication, management (e.g. security, visualization, preparation, storage), and/or computing. The cloud became the “centralized” environment from which the “edge” could then be identified and defined. The network edge was previously viewed as the equipment and systems that fed data to it. However, that definition is too simplistic for today’s industrial purposes.

The network infrastructure edge can include a range of technologies, and this ecosystem diversity is often an additional point of confusion. It is often a mix of traditional IT equipment and devices as well as purpose-built industrial systems and technology. These many technologies can be introduced into an industrial

88 Automation

| December 2018

environment as individual components or within a network. Their functionality can also be embedded within operational infrastructure, such as turbines, vehicles, robots, etc.

Don’t Get Lost in the Technical Detail While not meant to be a comprehensive list, these terms are likely to be the ones operations personnel will encounter most frequently. Without an understanding of IT concepts, processes, and architectures, it is easy to get lost in the technical detail of IT/OT convergence, much of which can end up being irrelevant to operations. It’s important to concentrate on understanding the operational impact of technology versus breaking it down functionally. If you do need to dig into the functionality, focus on the “why” instead of the “what.”

DMS CSR

THE WATER PROMISE – DMS Global joins hands with WATER RELIEF.ORG Clean water has become one of our most precious resources in the 21st century, in fact, one in nine people live without access to clean and drinkable water. The water crisis is real. It’s affecting men, women, children, families, and farmers. Women and children are spending hours a day fetching dirty water which leads to illness and disease, robbing entire communities of their futures. Lack of access to safe water and proper sanitation harms health. When health is affected, it limits education, leading to a cycle of poverty.

A bold commitment should be made to make sure everyone gets a chance to drink water from a reliable source. DMS Global has joined hands with WATERRELIEF.ORG, a nonprofit charitable organization in helping to plant more fresh water wells and pumps throughout Africa and Asia. Recently, DMS Global has taken an initiative to providing funds to dig a well in Ukhiya Village, Cox Bazar District, Chittagong division in Bangladesh. This is to help the refugees from Myanmar who are currently residing in Bangladesh. Every gift has an impact. Let’s share this gift of water with everyone.
