Dear DMS Members, For many years now we have considered using wireless communications for process instrumentation especially when remotely located. However, there are 2 main barriers to this; wireless communication itself and battery technology, but things are changing. If we consider wireless communications, I often wonder how much cheaper the installation and maintenance really is. Yes, we don’t have to worry about the cost of cabling and trays etc., but, during the operational phase, there are not too many costs connected to maintenance. The cables can obviously fail but, to be fair, they rarely do and, when they do, it is usually much easier to find out where the fault lies and repair accordingly with a pre-installed spare allowing the instrument to be quickly brought back online. Wireless, on the other hand, is perhaps cheaper to install although, with site surveys, the extra instrument and network configuration and commissioning required, this may not be realised. However, we also need to consider that wireless communications are at best unreliable with fault-finding sometimes difficult even with self-healing networks and network management tools. This is mainly due to wireless being unpredictable especially on plants where many obstacles cause erratic reflections, refraction and loss via physical barriers or distance, etc. No wonder it’s used only on non-critical applications or where, in remote locations for example, the homerun connection is only for monitoring purposes, ie. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) or perhaps for asset management data. Good network design and self-healing communications like WirelessHART or ISA-99 can help but, in many cases, there is still the balance between multi-path redundant topologies, with the field devices acting as nodes, and battery-life to be considered. Not to mention the limitation for simplex wireless gateways in some cases. This brings us nicely to battery technologies where battery-life is the number one issue especially in the Middle East where temperatures can easily reach 75o in the field. This is notable when wireless devices were 1st launched 10 years battery-life was celebrated. Some years later this was reduced to less than 5 years to reflect the fact that the battery technology, or more precisely the battery chemistry, being used meant that, at temperatures above 40o, the battery-life was halved and so topologies using more star and point-to-point designs and less frequent updates were more likely to be used reducing the fault tolerance of the network whilst making it slower too. However, batteries have come a long way in the last few years mainly due to car manufacturers and so, due to the use of different lithium-based chemistries that provide greater energy densities and lower self-discharge, the battery-lifes have been extended well beyond 20 years even in regions with high ambient temperatures and not only for low-pulse applications that require less data updates either. High-pulse applications where data updates are more frequent or where there is greater use of nodes can benefit from the use of hybrid layer capacitors to extend battery life. Perhaps then we need to revisit wireless especially with the need to wider use of data analytics and the IIoT since greater network reliability can now be achieved. Cyber-security obviously remains an issue but that’s another topic. Kind Regards,
Kind Regards,

DMS ANALYTICS
OPWP to Award the Development Contract for its First Solar Plant Soon Oman plans to add 2,000 MW of solar power capacity to the Main Interconnected System (MIS) by 2023 in line with Oman’s commitment to ensure Renewable Energy projects account for 10 percent share of electricity generation by 2025. The sultanate has already tendered the first 500 MW and an award for the development contract is expected shortly. State-owned Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has called for bids from solar power projects developers in June 2018, the Request for Proposals has been released to 12 prequalified firms, out of which three groups are now racing to win the contract. The firms include: - Masdar, Total Solar and Jinko Power (HK) Company - ACWA Power, Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) and Alternative Energy Projects Company - Marubeni Corporation, Oman Gas Company, Nebras Power QPSC, Bahwan Renewable Energy Company
With a capacity between 500 MW to 1,000 MW, the commercial operation for the second solar plant, currently known as Solar 2022 IPP, is due in 2022, a year behind the Ibri Solar plant. A tender for the technical consultancy services contract for the plant has been released last October. The third and the fourth IPPs will be tendered towards the end of 2019 and commercial operation for both is scheduled for 2023. In addition to the solar plants, OPWP plans to tender two wind IPPs in 2019 to be commercialized in 2023. Currently, a wind plan is being developed in Dhofar governorate by Masdar. The plant will have a capacity of 56 MW and will counter for about 50% of power consumption in Dhofar during winter season once completed in Q3-2019.
The solar power plant will offer 500 MW of generation capacity based on photovoltaic (PV) technology and will be located in Wilayat of Ibri in Al Dhahirah region.
PDO Starts Up Saih Nihayda Condensate Stabilization Plant Saih Nihayda Condensate Stabilization Plant is located near the Saih Nihayda gas plant in the north part of Petroleum Development Oman’s (PDO) concession area. The plant has a capacity to process 4,500 standard cubic meters of condensate per day and will be used as a backup for the existing central processing plant. The plant will support PDO’s goal to sustain gas flows from its main gas production facilities in the northern part of PDO’s concession area. Originally planned for late 2014, the completion of the plant was pushed back many times since works begun in October 2012. ABB of Switzerland won the $100 million Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract in July 2012. ABB’s contract also included the supply of power equipment such as lowand medium-voltage switchgear, power transformers,

the electrical control system, as well as continuous emission monitoring systems and other analytical instrumentation. Yokogawa Italy secured a contract for the supply of the remaining automation and instrumentation systems. ABB let a sub-contract for the construction and civil works to the local Al Hassan Engineering. Construction works started in April 2013 before the entire project was put on hold in mid-2015 for problems with the engineering designs. PDO had later suspended its contract with ABB over the constant delays in the project progress. Works on the project resumed in January 2016 by Al Hassan Engineering as the main EPC contractor, replacing ABB, but the project continued to face many delays until the plant was finally commissioned in Q4-2018.

Our clamp-on ultrasonic measurement systems FLUXUS measure virtually anything that flows, liquids as well as gases. Today, non-invasive, ultrasonic flow measurement is only an outsider measuring technique in the technical sense: Clamp-on ultrasonic transducers are simply attached to the outside of the pipe – without any interruption to operation or any risk of leakage. As our products meet the highest requirements of industrial production, namely the highest level of safety for people and the environment on the one hand and the highest level of plant availability on the other, the former outsiders have long since become extremely popular. We at FLEXIM, are particularly proud of our pioneering work carried out to transfer the clamp-on ultrasonic technology to the non-invasive flow measurement of gases. Today, FLEXIM is the only supplier of clamp-on ultrasonic systems for non-invasive flow measurement of liquids and gases with SIL certification worldwide.

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
Digital Transformation Drives Top Technology Trends for 2019 By Craig Resnick, Vice President, ARC Advisory Group
It’s become somewhat of an annual tradition for ARC Advisory Group to predict the top five or six technology trends that are likely to play out in the coming year for our Advisory Service clients. New technologies continue to make their way onto the plant floor and at an almost dizzying rate. This has both positive and negative effects for those responsible for investigating, implementing, using, and supporting operational technology in industrial, infrastructure, and municipal environments. On the positive side, it offers the promise of exciting new capabilities to help industrial organizations and smart cities meet their operational challenges. On the negative side, it’s becoming increasingly challenging for today’s typically “bandwidth-constrained” operational, maintenance, and engineering staffs to make sense out of it all and zero in on the handful of new technologies and approaches that should be on their respective radars in the coming year. In 2019, we see further acceleration of the convergence between IT and OT to support the ongoing digital transformation of industry and infrastructure. In no particular order, the top five technologies that we believe will play out over the next twelve months or so follow. Not co-incidentally, several sessions at the upcoming 2019 ARC Industry Forum in Orlando, Florida included end user presentations and workshops on these and related topics. Greater Adoption of Augmented Reality (AR) to Support Knowledge Transfer As baby boomers retire and are replaced by millennials, knowledge transfer is a major challenge. One solution is to deploy augmented reality (AR) technology, where the user sees the real world with infor-mation digitally overlaid.
Augmented Reality Overlays Digital Information Over Physical Assets (Source: Microsoft Azure)
AR devices “sense” what the worker is looking at and display only the data needed for the operation at hand. This is accomplished with video-see-through 68 Automation
| February 2019
technology, such as when using tablets or smartphones, or with optical-see-through technology, such as when using smart glasses or wearable computers. For example, in product assembly operations, the AR device prompts an operator with work instructions as augmented reality overlays physical and digital twin models, monitors progress, provides feedback, and incorporates automated inspection for quality control. In another example, for maintenance and service operations, AR devices provide maintenance and service technicians with detailed workflows and procedures such as asset diagnostics, work order information, recording capabilities, and a platform to contact remote experts for assistance. The VR training method is gaining traction in the process industries, where competency requires familiarity with equipment and operational and maintenance procedures. AR users can share their video feed with a mentor and that remote expert can overlay annotations or feed the user with manufacturing/maintenance details for better contextualization. Companies that employ AR achieve faster throughput, reduce rework, and lower downtime. Increased Use of Virtual Reality (VR) for Training and Simulation Workforce changes also create a major challenge for training that goes beyond YouTube videos, on-line, or classrooms. One solution is to deploy virtual reality (VR) technology where the user is fully immersed in a virtual world presented through a head-mounted device. Eye- and head-tracking sensors synchronize the virtual display with the user’s motion. VR is a powerful tool for creating immersive experiences and lends itself to applications such as product and process design or training simulations. VR can provide a highly realistic virtual training environment with contextualized, real-time data overlaid. This enables operators, maintenance technicians, and plant engineers to explore a variety of plant and field scenarios in a safe, off-line environment and prepare for the real-world environment with reduced unknowns. VR enables near-limitless creation of training scenarios with zero risk of disrupted operations. The VR training method is gaining traction in the process industries, where competency requires familiarity with equipment and operational and maintenance procedures. It is often challenging for millennials to acquire this familiarity, particularly for sophisticated and/or rarely executed tasks. VR provides these workers with a repeatable, low-stress learning
DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION environment in which to master these skills. Growing Deployment of Solutions that Combine Cloud and Edge Computing Given the increasing convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) and today’s emphasis on digital transformation, manufacturers must focus on deploying computing resources where it makes the most sense to do so on an application-to-application basis. A simultaneous approach that utilizes both cloud and edge solutions has emerged to enable industrial organizations to distribute computing resources more broadly.
resources to help alleviate the cybersecurity talent shortages plaguing both IT and OT groups. Industrial IoT devices and network edge equipment expand an already challenging attack surface. Many industrial organizations often consider cybersecurity their greatest threat. Reports on industrial cyber incidents show that attackers cross IT/OT boundaries and exploit gaps in security responsibilities. To help combat this, companies will converge their IT and OT cybersecurity efforts, which will help to clarify responsibilities and remove security gaps. Integrating information from sensors within and outside control systems creates more confusion in IT/OT responsibilities. Adding more suppliers further complicates enforcement of security requirements for new assets. To help combat this, companies will converge their IT and OT cybersecurity efforts, which will help to clarify responsibilities and remove security gaps. It will also help ensure more consistent security levels across entire organizations. Combined, this will help to reduce the organization’s overall cyber risk. More Assets Will Deploy Digital Twin Technology
Simultaneous Deployment of Cloud and Edge Solutions Enables Organizations to Distribute Computing Resources More Broadly
In industrial environments, edge technology is used to get the right device data in near real-time to drive better decisions and even control industrial processes. Once processed and analyzed, the data is sent to the cloud, which allows the organization’s IT group to leverage this often-critical business information. The simultaneous edge/cloud approach entails deploying edge devices with embedded analytics, edge servers, gateways, and cloud infrastructure to deliver industrial-grade availability and performance. By combining both edge and cloud technologies, industrial and infrastructure organizations can provide appropriate personnel with actionable information to support real-time business decisions, leveraging asset monitoring, analytics, machine learning (ML), and artificial intelligence (AI) to make sense of and act on complex data patterns. This will help organizations better identify process and other operational inefficiencies and pinpoint potential safety, production, or environmental issues. IT/OT Cybersecurity Converging to Address Manufacturers’ Greatest Challenge Many industrial organizations consider cybersecurity to be their greatest threat today. Reports on industrial cyber incidents show that attackers cross IT/OT boundaries and exploit gaps in security responsibilities. Organizational silos also complicate efforts to pool
More and more plant and other assets will come with digital twins that provide a virtual representation of the asset. These digital twins contain an archive of assetrelated information, such as drawings, models, bills of material, engineering analysis, dimensional analysis, manufacturing data, and operational history. This historical information can be used as a baseline when benchmarking asset performance.
Digital Twins Provide Access to Asset-related Information Used to Benchmark Asset Performance (Source: Siemens and Bentley Systems)
The digital twin will also have an archive of real-time data acquired via integrated sensors or external sources that can be used for condition monitoring, failure diagnostics, and both predictive and prescriptive analytics. Any knowledge gained will add value to the service life of the asset, such as improving efficiency, reducing downtime, anticipating failures, and providing insight for continuous improvement. The digital twin can also be deployed to provide plant personnel with operational intelligence. By bringing together Big Data, statistical sciences, rules-based logic, Automation

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), manufacturers and other industrial and infrastructure organizations can use these digital twins to help discover origins of complex problems and determine options for resolving. As assets increase in complexity, demand for assets with digital twins will continue to grow rapidly. Not all technologies, solutions, and approaches will be right for all organizations. To be able to determine where to best focus your limited human and financial resources it’s important to understand what’s going on, what’s available today, what’s likely to be available tomorrow, and what peer organizations are doing. End Users Should Embrace Digital Transformtion With all the technology changes going on right now, this is a particularly exciting time for us here at ARC Advisory Group, especially since the intersection of operational technologies (OT) and informational technologies (IT) an ARC “sweet spot” for both market research and technology consulting. At the same time, we understand that many of our clients are struggling to get their heads around these changes and figure out which they should focus on in the months and years ahead. This is understandable since the technology decisions made today will have a profound influence on the future viability and success of the organization, whether that happens to be an industrial manufacturer, energy company, infrastructure company, or public municipality.

| February 2019
As we’ve written in the past, end users and OEMs alike should embrace, rather than resist, digital transformation. However, in most cases, digital transformation initiatives must still respect legacy assets, as plants and cities will not “rip and replace” old, but otherwise well-functioning, equipment without financial cause. Legacy assets must remain a part of and be integrated into the solutions for digital transformation wherever possible. Succeeding here will require both an open mind for emerging technologies, approaches, and business models; and close collaboration between internal OT and IT groups as well as with external ecosystem partners, technology suppliers, and industrial and governmental consortiums. Not all technologies, solutions, and approaches will be right for all organizations. To be able to determine where to best focus your limited human and financial resources it’s important to understand what’s going on, what’s available today, what’s likely to be available tomorrow, and what peer organizations are doing. As always, ARC Advisory Group will continue to research and evaluate the latest technologies and approaches and stands ready to help guide our technology end user and supplier clients alike navigate through this labyrinth. We encourage readers to take advantage of the resources available to them; investigate best practices for technology implementation; and engage with the broader industrial, academic, and government communities.

When a Dream Needs a Gentle Push to Give It Wings-Sponsored by Analytical Division Of ISA Growing up as the youngest child in a family of five, abandoned by your father, neglected by your elder brother and sister, with just your mother who is a day laborer in a physically unwell state of health and with the dreams of one day becoming a Chemistry Professor is really hard. This is exactly the condition of Mohammed Sajib Sheik, a 10 year old boy hailing from a slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sajib’s father abandoned the family a long time ago. His elder brother and sister are both married and living their own happy lives while almost totally neglecting the existence of their own mother and brother. Sajib’s mother, Sofia Begum works as a day laborer to provide for herself and Sajib. But, because of being physically unwell, she isn’t able to go to work daily and so the responsibility of taking care of his mother and himself falls on the meek shoulders of young Sajib. He has to works after school, selling newspapers and water bottles to meet their needs. Like all other kids of his age, Sajib too loves playing cricket. He sings as well. But unlike every other kid whose role model might be a cricketer in this cricket crazy nation, Sajib’s role model is Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the world famous Swedish Chemist and founder of the Nobel Prizes, and hence his love for Chemistry. Once, at school, during a session of Science, the teacher was teaching about mixtures and it was a little above the understanding capabilities of a regular Sixth Grader, but Sajib easily understood the concepts and was given the opportunity to perform experiment in front of the whole class, and that too very successfully. He is passionate about his dreams to become a Chemistry professor one day and that is clearly reflected in his academics. But the only thing in his way to achieve that dream is the current situation he is in. No one to help him progress with his education, no one to guide him and help him plot his next steps 78 Automation

in education. And this is where C2C has come in to help him. C2C has taken Sajib under its wings and are supporting him by providing 1000BDT per month to help take care of their accommodation needs so that he can use the money he earns by himself to help complete his education and pursue his dreams of becoming a Chemistry Professor. C2C has a really good idea of how Sajib should carry on his education so as to achieve his dream. The Bangladeshi educational system is basically divided into 7 levels: •Pre-primary: Play School to Kindergarten •Primary: Grade 1 to Grade 5 •Junior School: Grade 6 to Grade 8 •Secondary School: Grade 9 to Grade 10 •Higher Secondary: Grade 11 and Grade 12 •Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years •Master’s Degree: 1 year According to the above given system, Sajib is now in Junior School and has a minimum of 9 years of education left to finally be able to achieve his dream. As per the Government curriculum, basic Science will be taught to all students from Grade 6 to Grade 8. From Grade 9, Science will be broken down into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. And it is also from Grade 9 that the education stream will be divided into Science, Arts and Commerce and this will be followed up until Grade 12. So, Sajib will have to opt for the Science stream from Grade 9 and then continue his education to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and then opt for a Master’s Degree in Chemistry to increase his chances of becoming a Chemistry Professor. Sajib is currently being sponsored by the Analysis Division of ISA. With a helping and guiding hand behind him, Sajib can easily achieve his dream and build a brighter future for himself and his family.

THE WATER PROMISE – DMS Global joins hands with WATER RELIEF.ORG Clean water has become one of our most precious resources in the 21st century, in fact, one in nine people live without access to clean and drinkable water. The water crisis is real. It’s affecting men, women, children, families, and farmers. Women and children are spending hours a day fetching dirty water which leads to illness and disease, robbing entire communities of their futures. Lack of access to safe water and proper sanitation harms health. When health is affected, it limits education, leading to a cycle of poverty.
A bold commitment should be made to make sure everyone gets a chance to drink water from a reliable source. DMS Global has joined hands with WATERRELIEF.ORG, a nonprofit charitable organization in helping to plant more fresh water wells and pumps throughout Africa and Asia. Recently, DMS Global has taken an initiative to providing funds to dig a well in Ukhiya Village, Cox Bazar District, Chittagong division in Bangladesh. This is to help the refugees from Myanmar who are currently residing in Bangladesh. Every gift has an impact. Let’s share this gift of water with everyone.
