Dear DMS Members, This month DMS hosted a Fieldcomm Group Technology Days in Abu Dhabi and Al Khobar attended by engineers from end-users, EPCs, control system vendors and university students to learn about the instrument asset management technologies offered by the Fieldcomm Group and how they are integrated with the IIoT. Some interesting content but what was more interesting to me was that Aramco who have been using Foundation Fieldbus (Ffieldbus) for around 15 years voice similar concerns that other end-users who adopted the technology have. It seems that Fieldbus has not lived up to its promises. Yes, it provides a single homerun cable (as long as you don’t go over 12 devices) and it does provide deterministic communications (albeit extremely slow) with the diagnostics required to know that an instrument has failed, is out-of-range or drifting. But this information is hard to get at and devices are still today not always interoperable (a recurring problem when software is the primary technology). Diagnostics are still not actionable and project engineering and maintenance timelines are still long even though it was supposed to reduce this. Control in the field is problematic at the outset and few have the knowledge even after more than 20 years to support the technology. End-users want diagnostics that are actionable, ie. advising of what to do to correct the fault. They want device drivers that are easy to deploy and update. They want plug-and-play. All these are available today with our home printers and so why not our control systems. Much is human- and process-based rather than technology-based but the control system vendors must share the blame as well. The Fieldcomm Group has done a lot to simplify the device driver challenges by introducing FDI but this just allows the diagnostic data to be accessed. How it is presented to the operator and what help it gives surely is down to the DCS. Integrated Asset Management Systems (IAMS) have evolved to manage the instruments using Ffieldbus, Profibus-PA and HART but there has been little help in advising of how to solve the problem. Perhaps the ISA should share the blame as well since the ISA-108 may not go far enough to help IAMSs provide all that the end-users need. Dialogue between all parties should prevail with actions taken to progress Ffieldbus, Profibus-PA and/or HART in a way that provides the real value that end-users thought they were getting. These technology days are a good starting platform. We need others. Watch this space!
Kind Regards,
Kind Regards,

The commissioning of the installed by 2022. plant is expected to start in the end of 2020.
UAE Renewable Outlook As part of The Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the U.A.E. and Ruler of Dubai, 7% of the total power output of Dubai will be provided from clean energy sources by 2020. The strategic plan also sees further progress where the total power output from clean energy sources is expected to increase by 25% in 2030 and 75% by 2050. With various possible sources of alternative energy which include solar, geothermal, nuclear and waste-to-energy, the UAE could eventually increase the dependence on clean energy sources. However, the nation’s focus is still predominantly turned towards oil due to large quantities of oil and gas reserves that allow the UAE to comfortably use this sector as main energy source. On the other hand, the UAE does recognize the importance of clean and renewable energy sources and is implementing strategies and placing investment in various developments to support the new sustainable outlook. The UAE’s constant exposure to sunlight throughout the year provides sufficient opportunities for producing solar energy that could meet the growing population’s demand for power. Solar projects are being developed and currently for the Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park Phase 5, DEWA is choosing a consortium of commercial, legal and technical advisers to assist in project advisory. Similarly, Mohammed Bin Rashid Solar Park Phase 4 700 MW CSP is about to appoint the technical advisor for the project. Samsung Engineering is currently involved in the upgrade of the existing general utilities at Ruwais refinery in Abu Dhabi, while Besix and Hitachi Zosen are involved in Dubai Municipality’s Waste to Energy Plant located in Warsan. Furthermore, Sharjah’s EWEC’s Waste to Energy Plant is being carried out by Constructions Industrielles de la Mediterranee (CNIM). Overall, it is evident that an increasing number of renewable projects are being undertaken and several others are planned which proves that the UAE’s sustainability focus is clear and effective strategic solutions are being implemented.

solar and wind power schemes to be implemented in the sultanate in the coming years. The government has recently issued a Request for Proposal (RfP) for consultancy service for the development of the second solar project. The plant will have a designed capacity of 500MW to 1,000MW, while the first solar project, 500MW solar photovoltaic to come up in Ibri, is already in the bidding stage. The wind scheme is also moving forward with seven locations around the sultanate have been identified optimal for the establishment of large-scale wind power projects, the project is, however, still in the feasibility study stage. The preparation for the prequalification tender for Oman’s first coal-fired power plant is over. Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) is awaiting the government green light to announce the launch of the pre-qualification tender, which is expected before the end of year.
To diversify away from gas-fired power plants, Oman is considering a string of waste-to-energy, coal-fired,

DIGITALIZATION
Essential Elements of Digital Transformation By Peter Reynolds, ARC Advisory Group
Keywords Digital Transformation, Industrie 4.0, Industrial IoT (IIoT), Maturity Model, Organizational Readiness.
Overview Industrial organizations around the world are entering a period in which new digital technologies augment people and processes to an unprecedented degree. New, commoditized computing resources in the cloud (and at the edge) and artificial intelligence (AI) are changing how people work. Approaches such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Industrie 4.0 have helped pave the way for digital transformation across a broad swath of industrial sectors, including both upstream and downstream oil & gas and petrochemicals.
Most industrial process companies globally will undergo a digital transformation to some degree or other in the coming years. However, many companies today tend to focus efforts on technology, without considering the full organizational impact. ARC has developed a maturity model that can help answer some key questions relative to digital transformation. Digital transformation spans industrial products, operations, value chains, and aftermarket services. It augments people and knowledge through expanded use of sensors, data, and analytics. ARC Advisory Group believes that most industrial process companies globally will undergo a digital transformation to some degree or other, with many already actively piloting advanced technologies. However, many companies today tend to focus their efforts on technology, without considering the full organizational impact. ARC research shows that only a small percentage (5 to 8 percent) of industrial organizations consider themselves ready for a digital transformation program. Many others are not prepared to scale up the pilot programs currently in progress. ARC research also indicates that barriers to organizational accountability, culture and employee change management impede transformation. Digital transformation requires a shift in approaches to deploying and utilizing technology. To help identify these gaps, ARC has developed a maturity model for digital transformation based on multiple consulting engagements with end user clients. Companies can use the model to help answer the following questions: • What is the role of the emerging digital organization?
• How can my company begin to transform? • How can we leverage existing data without compromising security? • How can we best prepare employees for digitization? • How can we accelerate knowledge and competency? • How can my organization scale up delivery? • What are the metrics for success?
Key Technologies Impacting Industrial Manufacturing Several emerging technologies have major impact on the process industries, each in a unique way. ARC’s maturity model for digital transformation connects these with people, culture, technology processes, and business processes. Industrial organizations have found this helpful to determine their respective organizational readiness for transformation.
Digital Transformation Technologies Many of the newer technologies require changing the way technology leaders think about people, technology architecture, and process. Many of today’s plant-centric approaches will not support new technologies and approaches. Historically, plantlevel operational technology (OT) systems have been procured and supported by plant engineering or operations staffs. But new information technology (IT)-based systems require internal IT staff or cloud service providers to manage and host the platform infrastructure, with engineering and/operations helping define the operational and supply chain outcomes.
Essential Elements of Digital Transformation To determine readiness for digital transformation, ARC has assembled maturity models that cross the boundaries of technology, business process and most important, people. We use these to help our clients evaluate current business processes and human capital, benchmark against industry peers, and perform a gap analysis. The maturity elements considered include: • Teamwork and culture • Knowledge transfer Automation
| November 2018
37
DIGITALIZATION • Capability and competency • Decision making • Workforce performance • Employee change leadership • Business process governance • Process improvement and agility • Measures and KPIs • Technology architecture and governance • Transformative potential and risk tolerance • Data management Clearly, the digital transformation of industry has the potential to contribute significantly to global economic growth. The World Economic Forum estimates that Industrie 4.0 alone could contribute more than $20 trillion to global gross domestic product (GDP) by 2020.
However, this will require a well-focused effort that includes preparing the workforce, implementing the appropriate IT infrastructure, and adjusting business processes. ARC research indicates that many management systems currently in place create barriers to digital progress. Often, hierarchical management structure, weak employee change management leadership, and organizational silos create artificial barriers to information, impeding decision making, and - ultimately - hampering business performance. ARC’s “elements of digital transformation” will help companies assess their respective readiness to transform. This consists of two main categories of organizational maturity: people readiness and business process readiness. Each element has its own implications for digital transformation.
Digital Transformation Elements and Organizational Implications Element
Digital Implication
Culture
Digital culture is based on a foundation of sharing. AI will be an enabler for process excellence. AI requires Big Data from many sources. Insights and knowledge are shared within an open governance framework, empowering people to make a difference.
Knowledge
Semantic search technologies have transformed knowledge on the web, with company tacit knowledge and know-how digitized, personalized, and transferable to employees as needed. AI-based knowledge systems drive new capability.
Capability and Competency
The entire organization uses a continuous improvement framework of individuals, workgroups and competency processes. Well-understood talent allows project teams to leverage their greatest assets.
Decision Making
Manual and labor-intensive activities detract from the company mission. Pervasive automation, Big Data, AI, and closed-loop systems allow people to focus on abstract and complex decisions.
Workforce Performance
Positive individualized performance assessment influence organizational change and drive continual process improvement and innovation.
Employee Change Leadership
A digital culture requires change leadership competency at all levels of the organization. Transformed processes require vision, skills, and enthusiasm at all levels.
Business Process Governance
A digital organization can quickly adapt processes to take advantage of emerging technologies. Business processes, governance, and mapping to workflow and activity levels must be understood.
Process Improvement & Agility
Employees are to be trained on a formal corporate wide continuous improvement program incorporating Lean Manufacturing, leveraging the emerging technologies. An agile, Cloud-first deployment is standard. Industry best practices are followed for all applications.
Measures/KPIs
Business improvement requires the ability to interpret, measure, and prioritize business process and performance. A digital organization uses collaborative metrics aggregated and mapped internally and/or externally as needed to drive change.

Programs exist to deploy leading-edge technology as a competitive advantage and evaluated for its transformative potential on corporate level contribution to the financial success of the overall company.
Data Management
Data at all levels of the organization is treated as a strategic asset. All staff are empowered and equipped to take stewardship of the information and seen as knowledge workers.
DIGITALIZATION
ARC Recommendations ARC believes that, if not addressed appropriately, current organizational factors and the lack of key internal processes will hamper the ability of many industrial organizations to succeed in digital transformation, thus retarding agility and business performance and leaving them at a competitive disadvantage. Many industrial organizations already acknowledge the need to better position the company to implement new digital and internet-enabled technologies without compromising cybersecurity. But as the OT and IT worlds continue to converge, a different technical organization may be required. The company’s technology leadership teams must evaluate how to make better use of the existing infrastructure and data, create more value from existing applications, avoid duplication of effort, and make best use of OT and IT resources at the plant and enterprise levels. As we move to a digital economy, many industries are gradually shifting many IT services to cloudbased service providers like Amazon and Microsoft.
Addressing this shift to the cloud will be a critical step for successful digital transformation by transferring some technology accountability to the business stakeholders. Based on ARC research and analysis, we recommend the following actions for industrial organizations: • Assess your organizational readiness using the elements of digital transformation discussed in this report, paying particular attention to the crossorganizational process boundaries. Engage with an independent consultant to assist, if needed. • Examine the processes used by IT and OT groups and look for potential gaps that could slow progress. • Do not underestimate the degree of work process change and develop methods for addressing this. • Help your workforce become comfortable with the inevitable change and disruption by investing in people and change leadership.

When a Dream Needs a Gentle Push to Give It Wings-Sponsored by Analytical Division Of ISA Growing up as the youngest child in a family of five, abandoned by your father, neglected by your elder brother and sister, with just your mother who is a day laborer in a physically unwell state of health and with the dreams of one day becoming a Chemistry Professor is really hard. This is exactly the condition of Mohammed Sajib Sheik, a 10 year old boy hailing from a slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sajib’s father abandoned the family a long time ago. His elder brother and sister are both married and living their own happy lives while almost totally neglecting the existence of their own mother and brother. Sajib’s mother, Sofia Begum works as a day laborer to provide for herself and Sajib. But, because of being physically unwell, she isn’t able to go to work daily and so the responsibility of taking care of his mother and himself falls on the meek shoulders of young Sajib. He has to works after school, selling newspapers and water bottles to meet their needs. Like all other kids of his age, Sajib too loves playing cricket. He sings as well. But unlike every other kid whose role model might be a cricketer in this cricket crazy nation, Sajib’s role model is Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the world famous Swedish Chemist and founder of the Nobel Prizes, and hence his love for Chemistry. Once, at school, during a session of Science, the teacher was teaching about mixtures and it was a little above the understanding capabilities of a regular Sixth Grader, but Sajib easily understood the concepts and was given the opportunity to perform experiment in front of the whole class, and that too very successfully. He is passionate about his dreams to become a Chemistry professor one day and that is clearly reflected in his academics. But the only thing in his way to achieve that dream is the current situation he is in. No one to help him progress with his education, no one to guide him and help him plot his next steps
in education. And this is where C2C has come in to help him. C2C has taken Sajib under its wings and are supporting him by providing 1000BDT per month to help take care of their accommodation needs so that he can use the money he earns by himself to help complete his education and pursue his dreams of becoming a Chemistry Professor. C2C has a really good idea of how Sajib should carry on his education so as to achieve his dream. The Bangladeshi educational system is basically divided into 7 levels: •Pre-primary: Play School to Kindergarten •Primary: Grade 1 to Grade 5 •Junior School: Grade 6 to Grade 8 •Secondary School: Grade 9 to Grade 10 •Higher Secondary: Grade 11 and Grade 12 •Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years •Master’s Degree: 1 year According to the above given system, Sajib is now in Junior School and has a minimum of 9 years of education left to finally be able to achieve his dream. As per the Government curriculum, basic Science will be taught to all students from Grade 6 to Grade 8. From Grade 9, Science will be broken down into Physics, Chemistry and Biology. And it is also from Grade 9 that the education stream will be divided into Science, Arts and Commerce and this will be followed up until Grade 12. So, Sajib will have to opt for the Science stream from Grade 9 and then continue his education to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and then opt for a Master’s Degree in Chemistry to increase his chances of becoming a Chemistry Professor. Sajib is currently being sponsored by the Analysis Division of ISA. With a helping and guiding hand behind him, Sajib can easily achieve his dream and build a brighter future for himself and his family. Automation

THE WATER PROMISE – DMS Global joins hands with WATER RELIEF.ORG Clean water has become one of our most precious resources in the 21st century, in fact, one in nine people live without access to clean and drinkable water. The water crisis is real. It’s affecting men, women, children, families, and farmers. Women and children are spending hours a day fetching dirty water which leads to illness and disease, robbing entire communities of their futures. Lack of access to safe water and proper sanitation harms health. When health is affected, it limits education, leading to a cycle of poverty.

A bold commitment should be made to make sure everyone gets a chance to drink water from a reliable source. DMS Global has joined hands with WATERRELIEF.ORG, a nonprofit charitable organization in helping to plant more fresh water wells and pumps throughout Africa and Asia. Recently, DMS Global has taken an initiative to providing funds to dig a well in Ukhiya Village, Cox Bazar District, Chittagong division in Bangladesh. This is to help the refugees from Myanmar who are currently residing in Bangladesh. Every gift has an impact. Let’s share this gift of water with everyone.
