Dear DMS Members, There was a time when intelligent automation was the digitization of process variables to allow a DCS to make adjustments to the process according to the set-point. The previous generation of control systems relied only on feed-back to allow the controller to react to the actual process state. Digitization allowed advanced process and predictive control using more powerful processers and hence intelligent automation. In this world, automation vendors concerned themselves with proprietary protocols, reliability, redundancy and specialisation. Separation and segregation was required to provide specific expertise, disparate systems, reliability and security. Today, intelligent automation means so much more in terms of computing power and electronics’ reliability. Digitalization (not digitization as before) of our automation allows the end-user to, not only predict changes in the process due to external forces that will need adjustment according to the set-point, but also equipment condition to predict upsets that are caused by equipment assets starting to fail like a valve sticking or sensor variance due to internal faults. In this world we will perhaps not need redundancy anymore because this was only required due to the unpredictability of equipment failure. True intelligence will allow condition monitoring to deploy large centralised processors to predict actual time of failure (day, hour and minute) for switch-over to hot-spares (N + 1) which would be loaded with the appropriate configuration moments before failure. This is the nirvana of intelligent automation and something that all manufacturers are working towards in some way. However, it will require a leap-of-faith by the end-users who will need to be convinced that this intelligence will indeed predict an asset’s end-of-life as accurately as promised without unduly affecting the process. It will also require far more use of larger processors that, in order to use big data analytics, will have to be located in the Cloud to allow the algorithms (that will have to remain on the owner’s server due to their value) to collate data from across the globe from many end-users using the same equipment because better prediction comes from greater amounts of data. This will require common system networks and communication protocols, which is obviously a huge challenge, but also will require end-users to share their data with the global community. Cyber-security is obviously a major concern therefore and why so much time is spent these days talking about it but the sharing of asset data and process conditions with vendors is perhaps the biggest challenge. No end-user likes to allow others to access their data for fear of losing their competitive advantage or allowing wrong-doers to create havoc. Most end-users will believe that this data is highly sensitive no matter what it shows. The writer has a different opinion because most of this data is just that, data that is meaningless by itself and requires context. Besides it can be stripped of its source whilst still providing useful feedback to allow real benefits to be derived from such. So, once we have broken-down these barriers, intelligent automation of the future will know the process and assets better than the owners do just as Google, Amazon or Facebook know our purchasing, online social behaviour and reading, listening or watching habits better than we do and we give this data away mostly without fear of reprisal and free!

DMS ANALYTICS Road to Economic Reforms in Saudi Arabia
The petrochemical industry is expected to grow an average of 5% over the next 4 years. The kingdom is planning to increase capacity to 34 million tonnes in 2030 from 12 million tonnes in 2016.
The ongoing National Transformation Program will help fulfill Vision 2030 by strengthening the kingdom’s partnership with the private sector. The scheme will prove to be significant in potentially raising about $200 billion. s

Having 1,784 billion cubic meters of proven natural gas reserves and being in the world’s top 20 countries, Kuwait is still struggling to take the leadership in the Middle East region.
The Jazan Refinery will serve the south-west of the country with a capacity to produce 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) of various products. Aramco, ACWA Power and Air Products recently signed an $8 billion JV to own and operate gasification assets, power block and associated utilities under a 25 year contract.

Kuwait Gas Sector Is Picking Up The Pace
Demand of natural gas is rising due to ongoing expansion projects. Aramco is set to boost the production of Haradh by building compression plants and a pipeline connection for the North, South and Satellite compression facilities. Another expansion is also underway on the Hawiyah plant to raise the capacity by 1.3 billion standard cubic feet per day.

King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy (KACARE) is developing a nuclear programme to help meet the demand of energy consumption in the kingdom. South Korea’s KEPCO and Russia’s Rosatom have been shortlisted to bid for the construction of two nuclear reactors that will generate 2.8 gigawatts (GW). The award will take place by the end of 2018.
Aramco and France’s Total have signed to build a petrochemical complex in Jubail that will be integrated with the Satorp Refinery which plans to produce 1.5 metric tonnes annually of ethylene.

Saudi Arabia remains committed to implementing reforms that will help transform the economy away from its reliance on oil through the Vision 2030 initiative. To create a sustainable, low-cost and productive renewable energy, Saudi Arabia has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Softbank to develop a solar farm that could generate 200 GW by 2030. Also, four consortia have submitted bids for the Dumat Al Jandal 400MW wind project to which the winning bid will be announced on December 2018.

The country’s authority, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), has been executing policy to increase the amount of natural gas produced by the country to four 4 billion cubic feet per day by 2030. However, the gas production grows along with the gas consumption; majority of the resources are used for both electricity and water desalination. At the moment Kuwait’s gas demand outweighs domestic gas production. In order to fulfill the 2030 strategy plan, Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) initiated a project to build a new, fifth, gas train at Mina Al Ahmadi refinery. At that time, the fourth gas train has already been under construction. The new facility would comprise several components: feed gas compressor, feed gas dehydration, LPG dehydration, NGL recovery, flare system, nitrogen generation & distribution system; and air

DMS ANALYTICS compression system. Back in 2011, Amec Foster Wheeler has been appointed to carry out front-end engineering and design (FEED) and project management consultancy (PMC) services for the project. The tender was expected to be released shortly after, but the process has been pushed back and the companies were invited to submit bids only in 2014.
Tecnicas Reunidas submitted the lowest bid and was awarded the main contract in Q2 2015. Construction works have started in Q1 2016 and been ongoing in a steady pace. As of now, the project is 85% complete and the commissioning process is expected to start in Q2 2019. The new train will increase Kuwait’s gas production capacity to 805 million cubic feet a day and 106,000 barrels a day (bpd) of liquids, which in turn will significantly boost upstream production capacity.
Expanding Downstream The UAE is targeting to become a leader in the downstream sector through its decision to focus efforts and tremendous investment in this sector. Traditionally the GCC has been known for the success of their upstream projects. The UAE, through the activities operated by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is the 12th largest producer in the world, holding around 6% of the global crude oil reserves. Despite the tremendous success of the upstream sector and in turn the country’s rapidly growing economy, the UAE recognises the importance of using the resources to expand further. Effectively, ADNOC is now ready to significantly expand its portfolio and maximise the business value through focusing of the investment in the downstream sector, without neglecting the currently well-established upstream sector.

Earlier this year, ADNOC announced a $45 billion investment over the next 5 years in downstream projects. Ruwais Industrial Complex is one of the project financed through the investment which involves the development of the world’s largest integrated refining and chemical site which will be located at Abu Dhabi’s western region. This mega project will triple 14.4 million tons of annual production by 2025. The new refinery that will be located within the complex is underway, expecting technical bids for the FEED contract to be submitted soon. Engaging in processes further down the petroleum supply chain, also involves the development of petrochemical plants. Technical bids have been submitted for the EPC for the Gasoline and Aromatics project and ADNOC expects the award to happen at the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019 depending on the procedure of the commercial process. Furthermore, Borouge recently awarded the EPC contract to Marie Tecnimont for the Polypropylene Plant 5 (BPP5) and ADNOC & Cepsa’s Linear Alkyl Benzene (Lab) Facility received bids for the front end engineering design (FEED) and is expecting to award in the last quarter of 2019.

Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu Royal Commission in Jubail Contact Person: Mazen Alsirhani Address: Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia – P.O.Box 10001 Jubail Industrial City 31961 Telephone Number: 00 966133413000 Mobile Number: 00 966557334907 Website: www.rcjy.gov.sa Email: suggestion@rcjubail.gov.sa Sponsor Type: Supported By Stand Number: A1 Four decades ago, the economic development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia depended basically on crude oil as, almost, a sole income source. But after careful consideration, and with the guidance of Allah, the leadership was convinced of the necessity of conducting comprehensive studies for the versification of the national income sources, investment of oil income in the utilization of other natural resources in the kingdom, creating business opportunities and jobs for citizens and importing and nationalization of the latest scientific and industrial technologies worldwide. These studies concluded the need to make an integrated strategic plan for manufacturing to serve as the backbone of the development plans. Thus, the Royal Commission was born as per Royal Decree No. (M/75) dated 16/9/1395H which directed its establishment and assignment of the construction, operation and development of the infrastructure in Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities to host the petrochemical industries and to achieve the huge and ambitious industrial programs in Jubail, on the Arabian Gulf coast, and Yanbu on the Red Sea coast, as per a master plan for each and to tie this industrial plan with the comprehensive integrated development plan of the country. The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu has managed to attract investments, provide hundreds of thousands of jobs for Saudi citizens and nationalize the latest industrial technologies worldwide. Such efforts gave the Royal Commission a special rank among similar international industrial cities. The growth rate of the achieved investments and the need to host the growing number of investment requests prompted the Saudi Leadership to expand the cities into Jubail (2) and Yanbu (2). And thanks to Allah, under the wise leadership, achievements flowed until Jubail and Yanbu became mega industrial forts pointed at with admiration. After the huge success of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu in the construction and operation of Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities, the Council of Ministers issued Royal Decision No. (355) dated 30/10/1430H which directed the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu to manage Ras Al Khair Industrial City and to provide services for mining and other industries on the same pattern of Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities. The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu was assigned the management and operation of Jazan Economic City as well as per a Royal Decree considering its continuous and impressive successes. As an acknowledgment of the Royal Commission’s efforts in different fields, it received several international, regional and local awards and certificates.

SAS), which was established back in 1980, has been a pioneer in promoting the automation technology, standards, and training for both professionals and students. Ambitious plans are being implemented to expand ISA across major cities kingdom-wide as well as promoting this professional engineering society within female engineer’s sectors and academia. Partnerships with KFUPM and major players like DMS Global can be expanded to serve these goals.
SISC 2018 has been another very successful symposium in the tradition
Dr. Hesham Kamal Al-Fares Symposium Co-Chairman Chairman of Systems Engineering KFUPM
of previous SISC events. However, this current event has started a new phase for SISC and has moved it one step up to a higher, more prominent level. Although this is the outcome we expected from our full-scale collaboration with ISA, the results have truly surpassed our expectations. The higher level of collaboration between KFUPM and ISA along with the organizational skills of DMS Global has proved to be a win-win situation for all sides and stakeholders.
The ISA/SISC 2018 was a huge success by all measures. The close

collaboration between ISA-SAS and KFUPM, and the great efforts and planning by DMS Global have resulted in a high-quality technical program, an automation-focused exhibition and unique networking opportunities. The automation community in the Kingdom is very eager to participate in such focused events.

PROCESS ANALYZERS ANALYZER TECHNOLOGY FUTURE Interview of Mr. Zaheer Juddy Managing Director – AIMS Email: zaheerjuddy@aimsgt.com
These services are widely spread in Analytical Instrumentation, Process Solutions, Sulphur Recovery Optimization and equipment related to Sulphur Recovery Units. Insight: And what are some of the main factors that you feel make AIMS unique from some of the other players in the sector? Zaheer: Service, Service, Service! Service is key to our success. Customer are looking for local service, prompt solution within no time where I believe our company is unique. Our Passion and commitment makes it. The company is led by Technical Experts which teams with young dedicated staff We are well known company for providing Analytical Solution for Sulfur Recovery Units from decades. Our principal is reputed multinational for having expertise and proven technology in this area.
About: Analytical Instrumentation & Maintenance Systems (AIMS) is founded to provide expertise service for Analytical Instrumentation. The company is led by personnel with specialized skills in Analytical Instruments and System Development supported by a team of service personnel in the field of related process automation. These services are widely spread in Analytical Instrumentation, Process Solutions, Sulphur Recovery Optimization and equipment related to Sulphur Recovery Units. Insight: Good day from ISA, I take the pleasure of interviewing young and dynamic entrepreneur in the Middle East for exclusively Analytical Instrumentation Zaheer: Thank You, Thank you for having me again. Insight: So starting off, Please give us brief overview of the company Zaheer: AIMS (Analytical Instrumentation & Maintenance Systems) is founded 10 years before mainly for analyzer service. We started our journey with most difficult applications such as Sulphur recovery unit gas analysis. The company is led by personnel with specialized skills in Analytical Instruments and System Development supported by a team of service personnel in the field of related process automation.
Moreover, we always venture out for new technologies like TFS, TDLAS, Vacuum UV, RAMAN Spectroscopy etc. As AIMS we take these technologies to customer, test it on their sample/process and provide a complete solution to their analytical challenges with performance assurance. TFS and TDLAS are the game changers in the current market. With our technical experts the value addition being made to customize the product is always key for which we are uniquely known.
In the years to come the Oil & Gas Industry will have a lot of uncertainties, but technology can help us to become more independent from these uncertainties Being head office in UAE, we always promote MADE IN GCC. We completely fabricate our design with our In-house capabilities. Likewise, our workshop and testing facilities in Al Khobar and Abu Dhabi are also in operation and we have started doing integration and testing of our Saudi projects in our facility in Al- Khobar. Another important factor which makes us unique is our Service abilities. Our Technical Experts always analyze for root cause of technical issue.

PROCESS ANALYZERS Insight: What is your approach in promoting new technologies, being a regional company, it’s always challenge for vendor/technology registration in bigger groups like ARAMCO, SABIC, PDO, OGC, OXY, OLNG, KNPC and ADNOC etc. Zaheer: Yeah quite a challenging question. We believed in Technology and customer believed in us. So we always ensure the Technology makes its sound. We always believed in Promoting new technologies. So identify the right application and engineer the prerequisites of client and promote. Evaluation was always our need from customers. I remember years back, we implemented the first TDLAS based Analyzer in one of ADNOC plant for LNG process. After its success, now we have many installed base for TDLAS technology across the region for various applications. Recently we have installed first TDLAS SO2 Analyzer for cross-stack measurement at SRU incinerator stack which has shown promising results. Now we are introducing Laser analyzer with hyperreflective measuring cell combined with sonic nozzle probe that will eliminate need of heated sample lines even for extractive sample measurements. The technique will be able to measure multiple gases to ppb level.
Insight: What is the future of an Analyzer Engineer compared to the engineers in other disciplines, Is it worth pursuing for future progress? Zaheer: This is a question asked by many analyzer engineers and I support that promotion ladder for Analyzer Engineer should be opened to the higher positions, I wish to see Analyzer Engineer one day holding lead position in oil & gas plant. Insight: Where to get qualified and trained workforce from? Zaheer: This will remain challenging unless the mindset is changed and importance and criticality of analyzers is realized and subsequently money is invested and efforts are put forth. The workforce should be properly trained before it is set to maintenance tasks at site. The team has to be fully acquainted with sufficient knowledge through trainings by a ISA certified training provider who is equipped with qualified staff and live demo units. Developing a technical handbook specific to a plant is also good idea which we launched for Annual Maintenance Contracts in ADNOC Source Gas and other plants. The handbook assures quality service for analyzers of difference make/model by diversified maintenance team.
We are privilege to utilize the platform like ISA, Technical Symposiums and Technical forums promoting these innovations. Insight: That’s Interesting. So it seems that you’re pretty confident there in the company’s future. And with that being said I hope you have bright future with lots of In-vision you have. Zaheer: Sure, I obviously think the future is extremely strong. As I noted earlier, given our stage of development with multiple shots on goal to mitigate risk, along with the current price point of the company’s stock, I think there is the potential for significant growth and upside assuming we achieve what we need to achieve in all our endeavors. Insight: What is best use of analyzer results to be used in the industry? Zaheer: Input those results into APC (advance process control) system for critical applications like reactors, hydrotreater and CCR platforming unit to optimize the process and maximize yield. There are huge benefits being drawing from the process units that are equipped with APC supported by online Analyzers.
Insight: Being an experienced Analyzer Specialist, what do you consider the seven deadly sins for Analyzer package projects? Zaheer: as saying goes,
“Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance. “You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your informed opinion.” There are a few mistakes that must be avoided in designing the analytical system,

PROCESS ANALYZERS 1.Location & Plot plan Mistakes During Engineering Phase, identify the analyzer location using 60 % 3D Model of Plot and group the analyzers wisely to eliminate plot plan mistakes
3. DATA SHEETS & DOCUMENTATION MISTAKES Sample Routing needs to be defined so that the analyzer shelter is as near as possible from Take-Off point
Common mistakes in data sheets are follows, I. Analyzer datasheets are OUTDATED II. No Adequate Information Available III. Process Design Specifications are not clear IV. Utilities data is always missed V. Process Composition Information is always a BIG CHALLENGE Following are the basis of a practical Datasheet, • Datasheets need to be updated on Regular basis • Process Composition to be updated with Process Variations for MIN, NOR & MAX • A Standard ISO Datasheet format to be followed to enhance the Vendor to Serve the best • All PEFS documents to be corrected with 3D Modelling and other advanced software at EPC level • PEFS should also include DEW & Bubble Point Calculations
2. Tapping Point Identification & Implementation of PEFS
4. Flawless Project Implementations
Accessibility to the sample take off point is to be considered otherwise it can create a high risk maintenance activity as shown in below photograph.
• Learn from Flaws Committed Every time • Implement Flawless Project Delivery as Sub Project in Every Project

PROCESS ANALYZERS 5. VDRL – An Infinity Document List The Vendor Document Registry List (VDRL) shall only be based on the document that are essential for the project. Otherwise, the analyzer package supplier will be spending more efforts on unnecessary document.
It is important that, Make a Separate VDRL for Analyzers and Make all the documents available to the END USER. Ensure all the information required by the Analyzer Vendor to be submitted by the EPC Contractor. 6. Approved Vendor List (AVL) Challenges AVL Lists needs regular Updates with Advance Technologies Trending in the market – like TFS & TDLAS 7. Site Commissioning and Training Issues Following are important consideration for site commissioning, • Site Acceptance Test Always FAILURE • END User is not familiar with new Technology • Training is often not considered As a remedy, • Involve END User from the Engineering Stage • Train USER at regular intervals of the project • FAT/SAT Procedure to be approved by USER as well Finally LET’s DO THE RIGHT THINGS!...
