I am delighted that you have joined us for our Art and Design Degree Show. We are proud to celebrate the inspiring and innovative work of our final year students and to showcase the exciting creations of the next generation of artists and designers from our architecture, art, design and fashion undergraduate courses. At DMU the Faculty of Art, Design and Humanities brings together award-winning student work, world-leading research and the innovative thinking of our many creative disciplines.
As an acknowledged leader in creative education, we work tirelessly to give our students a rich and rewarding experience. Our strong industry links, placements, lectures by industry professionals and opportunities to work on live commercial briefs all equip them to realise their full potential and enter the workplace ready to make a valuable contribution from the start. Our graduates go on to work for high-profile brands such as the BBC, Mothercare, Abercrombie & Fitch, Dyson, BMW, Next and Adidas. We were delighted that our expertise in preparing our students for the work place was recognised by the British Industrial Design Association (BIDA) survey which voted our Design Products programmes joint third in the UK for producing the most employable graduates. Each year we celebrate many student successes. This year has included Contour Fashion graduate Selina Bond who won New Designer of the Year at the 2015 UK Lingerie Awards. MArch graduate Alistair Wood who beat off international competition to win a prestigious commendation from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in their silver medal category. Design Crafts student Josefina Flello Martinez, who won a Precious Metal Bursary from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, and Danielle O’Neill a Fashion Design student, whose unconventional knitwear design earned a place on the catwalk in the 2016 Fashion Awareness Direct competition. Students joining us in the next academic year will be based in our new Vijay Patel Building, the centrepiece of DMU’s £136 million campus transformation. This brand new building has sector-leading art and design teaching facilities and workshops surrounded by modern, inspiring environments for our students to learn in. Enjoy the show!

ARCHITECTURE BA (HONS) Architecture at DMU responds boldly to the challenges of designing for diverse communities and cultures in a globalised world. Our graduates have a confidence in their architectural skill set to change the world and the habitats of the future with their creative design skills, imaginative vision, strategic thinking, humanistic and ethical understanding, environmental knowledge and technical ability. Our course meets the challenges for diverse communities and cultures where there are modernising threats to traditional cultures, complexities in generating sustainable environments and constant change in technological aspects of modern life.

ARCHITECTURE MArch The MArch programme develops the emerging architectural professional and challenges the individual to discover or develop a personal stake in the architectural world. Current issues in architectural thought, practices and processes are studied through deep foundations in historical and philosophical thought, contemporary states of urban inhabitation, challenges to a sustainable ecology, the ramifications of modern technology, legal and economic contexts, and the state of the profession. Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are able to progress to professional registration/licensure examinations allowing access to the legal title of ‘architect’ and to markets, in the UK, EU or other legal jurisdictions.

Contour Fashion at DMU is the only course dedicated to global intimate apparel design, which combines heritage and innovation. Throughout its 69-year history, Contour Fashion at DMU has consistently been the driving force behind innovative solutions in the wider arena of the intimate apparel industry via advances in fabric technology, garment production and manufacturing methodologies. Our course engages with fashion houses, retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, models and music celebrities in a truly international arena, while inspiring students to develop industry-level skills and channel their talent into breathtaking work which realises their creative aspirations. It has produced outstanding graduates in aesthetic design innovation and technological excellence in the fields of lingerie, corsetry, nightwear, loungewear, menswear, sportswear and bodywear on a global scale. We are proud to have educated key industry players for major international companies in locations such as New York, Sri Lanka, The Netherlands, Sweden and Taiwan. Our graduates are employed by Boux Avenue, ASOS, Clover International Ltd, Berketex Bride, Grace Loves Lace, DVS Fashion, MAS, Fleur of England, Missguided, Boohoo, H&M Sweden, George, Tesco, Gainway, Haddow, GAP New York, Panache and West End Clothing. Others have established own brand labels such as Nichole de Carle, Lascivious, Tattoo, Made by Niki, Nicole Gill, Tutti Rouge, Reckless Wolf, By Elena, Biondi Couture, Betty Blue, Lorna Drew and Karolina Laskowska. The course benefits from strong relationships with influential industry partners including the International Institute of Intimate Apparel, an advisory body of senior people from all aspects of the intimates industry world wide. DESIGN CRAFTS BA (HONS) Design Crafts at DMU has emerged from our long-standing craft provision in ceramics, glass, textiles and metalwork. The course provides opportunities for students to design and make objects using traditional and emerging technologies, reflecting the changes in digital manufacturing and realisation technologies. We introduce hand, machine and computer skills to students wishing to explore craft making, drawing and design. Students can manipulate a variety of materials such as; textiles, plaster, paper, glass, clay, fine metals, plastics, resin, foam, wood and veneers. This course attracts students who have an ambition to develop their own personal design crafts practice, often with interests in entrepreneurship and a desire to determine their own creative future. During the course we enable students to develop their passion for making and to establish a personal, creative voice through a range of challenging projects. Students and staff produce a wide range of objects; individual artefacts for galleries and commission, small batches of similar items, limited editions, public installations and designs for industry. Bespoke objects are produced for domestic, interior spaces, exterior spaces, worn on the body, and can be hand-held or large-scale sculptural pieces. This reflects the range of careers accessible within the field of design crafts; including craftsperson, jeweller, ceramicist, textile artist, designer-maker, glass artist, bookmaker, designer, researcher, consultant, curator, buyer, stylist and educator.

DESIGN PRODUCTS MDes (HONS) Design Products MDes at DMU develops students commercial awareness of design and teaches them to challenge convention through developing innovative solutions to the design needs of a changing world. Students are prepared to start their career in industrial design manufacture at a high level of responsibility and creativity having progressed to master’s level in one integrated course. The course puts students on a fast track to becoming a senior designer, design consultant or design manager. This course is suited to students with a strong art or design background who are looking for a career in designing products for the manufacturing industry. With a choice of product or furniture briefs for the first two years of study, students can begin to specialise in the third year through projects that develop their design skills and understanding. Such as design for an ageing population, sustainability or emerging markets for product or furniture design. At the end of the third year students undertake a threemonth work placement and through our strong links with industry, we help students to find their placement. These placements provide an industry link to support students with their specialist final-year project.
In the final year, students will complete a single major design project and modules in the study of design business, design methodologies and emerging digital technologies. Students have access to the latest rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques and they are supported by an assigned specialist tutor. Recent graduates are working for a wide range of companies, including DS Smith Correx, Games Workshop, HJC Design, Peers Hardy Group, Seymourpowell, Shore Design and Zonica Mobile. The Design Products subject area of programmes was voted the joint 3rd best UK Product Design ‘School’ for producing the most employable graduates by the British Industrial Design Association (BIDA) survey in 2016.

FASHION BUYING WITH DESIGN BA (HONS) FASHION BUYING WITH MARKETING BA (HONS) Fashion Buying at DMU meets the needs of the highly dynamic, fast-moving and exciting fashion buying business. The course offers two pathways and is studied with either design or marketing. The design route is a creative pathway and focuses on design, trends, range planning, and the production of a final collection. The marketing pathway focuses on product development, consumer behaviour, marketing, promotion and a final dissertation. Each year our strong professional links enable us to run live projects, work experience and competitions. Next ran a trends competition whereby winning students had the opportunity to be ‘fast tracked’ through the recruitment process, which resulted in one of our students being offered a full time trainee buyer’s role. These opportunities allow our students to work closely with companies on real-time issues affecting contemporary fashion retail.
Employability is a key focus and we embed this training into our course. Further to this we offer our students the opportunity to complete a year’s placement in industry where they can gain more in depth and ‘hands on’ experience. Recent placements have been taken up with Arcadia, Tesco, Coast, ASOS, George, Timberland, Amanda Wakeley, Jenny Packham, Matalan, and O’Neill (Amsterdam). Our 2016 graduates have already secured permanent employment with various brands within the Arcadia Group, as well as River Island and Joules. Students can also experience international travel with DMU and this year, the students have been on field trips to New York, London and Amsterdam. We are also a member of the ASBCI (Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry). The ASBCI supports prestigious student competitions nationally and this year we will be entering students for their Dissertation award which is jointly sponsored by M&S.

FASHION DESIGN BA (HONS) Fashion Design at DMU is an exciting and dynamic course which inspires students to explore the relationship between design and technology. This emphasis fosters creativity within a theoretical and philosophical framework supported by technical skill and accomplishment, blending theory with practice. Our graduates meet the demand for designers who can confidently bridge the boundaries between creativity, technology, and design in the fashion industry. Skilled graduates are highly desirable in the marketplace, and our graduates are placed in esteemed and influential companies in the UK and internationally. There are opportunities to work on external project briefs set by industry as well as prestigious national and international competitions. The course offers the opportunity to specialise in project work for womenswear, menswear or fashion knitwear, gaining specialist design and technical expertise relevant to a range of fashion activities, from initial design concept through to the finished prototype. By nurturing their talent and creativity, we encourage our students not to just meet expectations, but to exceed them.

FASHION TEXTILES AND ACCESSORIES BA (HONS) Fashion Textiles and Accessories 2016 represents a group of graduates who embody the course ethos: quality, experimentation and diversity. This year has seen students developing a strong, varied range of collections, gaining places at the Royal College of Art, as well as some gaining financial bursary awards from the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers. Covering knit, print, mixed media textiles, and leather accessories for fashion, the collections this year show maturity and a contemporary design focus, demonstrating the relevance to the skills and approaches gained over the last three years. The course prides itself in developing the practical design and production skills of its students, as well as producing designers who are fashion aware, technically diverse, professional and contemporary in their design approach. Our students have gone on to placements or employment at companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Celine, Phoebe English, Ted Baker, The Cambridge Satchel Company, Marks and Spencer, Jonathan Saunders, Chalayan Roksanda, Vivenne Westwood and Michael Van der Ham.

FINE ART BA (HONS) Fine Art at DMU is taught in a dedicated studio environment by practicing artists. The course enables students to identify and develop an individual creative position, it offers flexibility, enabling students to specialise in one discipline or opt for a broad pattern of fine art study. Our students are able to experiment using a range of techniques including painting, drawing, casting, installation, sculpture, performance, photography, film, video, sound and print. As students move through the course they will choose an area which best suits their own practice as an artist. We prepare students for a wide range of creative employment, but most students aspire to be professional, exhibiting artists. Fine Art students have the opportunity to go on study trips abroad with #DMUglobal. Students have visited a number of international destinations including New York, Cyprus and Venice. Alongside these study trips students have also had the opportunity to study in France, Holland, Belgium and Spain for part of the second year. For Stephen Rhead, who graduated from the course in 2015 and is now doing a Masters degree at DMU, ‘the best part of the course is being able to sit in the studio and work, and be surrounded by my peers’.

FOOTWEAR DESIGN BA (HONS) Footwear Design at DMU covers the unique and complex shoe design process, and enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills that set them apart from others in the fashion sector. Graduate employment is over 90 per cent, thanks to our worldwide links with the footwear industry. Our students regularly win awards at national and international competitions, such as The Cordwainers, London, which endorses our status as a world-class footwear design course. Work placement opportunities with companies such as Alexander McQueen, Jimmy Choo, Kurt Geiger, Nike, L.K.Bennett and Ted Baker provide excellent links with industry. Live projects set by companies and organisations such as Jeffery West, Irregular Choice, Clarks and GAP help students to gain a diverse range of relevant skills. Recent graduates have gone onto careers with Jimmy Choo, Dr Marten, Nike and Kurt Geiger, both in the UK and Overseas.
Throughout the course, shoe design and technical making skills will be developed, emphasising the crucial relationship between design and manufacture and the needs of the footwear industry. Students develop design, research, drawing and illustration skills, and the ability to present and communicate ideas and concepts to a high professional standard. This includes a series of shoe design projects focusing on a comprehensive range of footwear styles. Our students learn technical modern shoemaking skills and make a range of prototype shoes using specialist studio facilities including 3D design equipment. We have a unique series of guest speaker events which take place throughout the year and have previously included Guy West and Liam Fahy; these events provide the chance to network with industry.

FURNITURE DESIGN BA (HONS) Furniture Design at DMU focuses on contemporary design for mass manufacture. Our students design for a variety of markets and seek to innovate by experimenting with function, materials, manufacturing and aesthetics. The course produces furniture designers who shape the future of the design industry. Students have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of furniture design briefs, while also being taught advanced drawing and presentation techniques as well as 3D CAD modelling. Students gain a detailed understanding of structure, materials and manufacturing processes.
Recent graduates are working for an exciting wide range of companies as part of in-house design teams or consultancies, including Next, Sixteen3, Martin Brudnizki and BMA Nomique. The Design Products subject area of programmes was voted the joint 3rd best UK Product Design ‘School’ for producing the most employable graduates by the British Industrial Design Association (BIDA) survey in 2016.

INTERIOR DESIGN BA (HONS) /MDes (HONS) Interior Design at DMU is a long-established course that allows students to explore the different fields of interior design and develop high levels of technical skills and design knowledge. The course supports student’s individual creative processes and prepares them for employment as a professional designer or for further study. We have seen continued success this year through a number of live projects and competitions helping students to realise their full potential and preparing them for the workplace. Projects can range from regenerating and adapting real buildings and sites, such as converting old warehouses and factories into bold new cafÊ-bars and living spaces to designing retail plazas, transport hubs, exhibitions and sets for TV programmes. Students develop skills in drawing, 3D modelling, computing and the video-modelscope. A number of third year students undertook the national RSA competition and we had three students selected for shortlist in one category. The RSA student design awards continue to challenge innovative responses to complex social issues and it is immensely rewarding to be recognised for this through the students work.

PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO BA (HONS) Photography and Video at DMU offers a unique programme of still and moving image to meet the ever evolving demands of both the creative industries and professional arts practice. We encourage experimentation with both traditional and digital photography, moving image and sound. The programme focuses on developing both a unique creative vision and the technical abilities to become a highly employable practitioner of lens-based media; a practitioner able to work flexibly across a wide range of artistic and creative design and production roles. Our graduates go on to pursue a wide variety of exciting careers as freelance still and moving image creatives, roles in independent production, teaching, curatorial work, multimedia industries, publishing, advertising, journalism, picture research, and arts administration.
Recent graduates have gone on to work for companies such as Nike, Universal Pictures, Sky, Lacoste, John Lewis, the BBC, Apple, Spring Studios, Calvin Klein, Christopher Kane, Bellstar, Phillips and Disney. They have been published by Rolling Stone, The Independent, i-D, Vogue, Wallpaper and many others. This is what our graduates have said about the programme: ‘The Photography and Video course helped me get a job in the visual industry! Now I am on shoots with clients as big as Microsoft and Virgin’, Milan Gosai, graduate. ‘I just wanted to say the most valuable thing on the course, was that the tutors were amazing, each and everyone was there for each and every student. PRODUCT AND FURNITURE DESIGN BA (HONS) Product and Furniture Design at DMU develops the ability to think creatively across the boundaries of product and furniture design giving students the choice to follow a wide-range of design career paths. Our graduates go onto careers with companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Mamas & Papas, Sixteen3, Vax and Habitat. This year Seymourpowell, Made in Mind, Willis & Gambier, Crofts & Assinder and the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, continued their ongoing live project collaborations with our students, through paid internships, mentoring support and cash awards. Our course enables students to study the social requirements of product and furniture design, including ergonomics, aesthetics and usability. Specific areas of study include user-centred design, CAD, sustainability and the development of socially conscious products that reduce waste and conserve energy. Students develop the skills to create products and furniture that meet the requirements of the modern consumer within a professionally active department where staff are involved in commercial projects with companies such as Berghaus, BAA and Adidas. Students have the opportunity to undertake work placements at the end of the second year. We encourage and support students with this, and use our strong links with industry to help them find a placement. As an alternative to a work placement students can undertake
a year-long exchange with a European design school through the Erasmus scheme. Previous students have spent a year in Orleans, France and Stuttgart, Germany. Product and Furniture Design students have won many major awards in recent years including the prestigious RSA Student Design Awards, the BASF Student Design Awards and the Habitat Furniture Design Award. They have also won a number of awards at New Designers in London. PRODUCT DESIGN BA (HONS) Product Design at DMU develops creative thinking and consistently produces innovative product designers. Students have a strong art or design background and focus on both the technical and visual design aspects of design for industry. The course develops students understanding of materials, manufacturing, ergonomics, elementary mechanics and electronics. Designs will take into account the sustainability of conventional product design, developing socially conscious products that reduce waste and conserve energy. 2016 saw continued success from ongoing collaborations and live projects with Seymourpowell, Made in Mind, Willis & Gambier, Crofts & Assinder and the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, with our students receiving paid internships, mentoring support and cash awards. Students have also taken part in sandwich year and summer placements at other companies such as JCB, Jaguar Land Rover, Bosch and Renfrew Group and have won prestigious national and international competitions such as the RSA Student Design Awards.
Our students’ projects represent a breadth of approaches, subjects and outcomes that reflect the expert teaching provision within the department. Staff and students’ research and product solutions focus on contemporary and future life, seeking to answer the ‘grand challenges’ of our time, including – the ageing population, health, sustainability, society and the breadth of challenges faced by Third World nations and their people. Graduate opportunities are with companies such as Cambridge Consultants, Aston Martin and Dyson. The Design Products subject area of programmes was voted the joint 3rd best UK Product Design ‘School’ for producing the most employable graduates by the British Industrial Design Association (BIDA) survey in 2016.

PRODUCT DESIGN BSc (HONS) Product Design at DMU combines industrial product design with engineering design principles to develop creative and technical skills. Students gain a detailed understanding of the principles of design and apply that knowledge to create designs that meet the needs of commerce, technology and manufacturing. This degree is accredited by the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED) under licence from the UK regulator, the Engineering Council. Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). An accredited degree provides students with the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). Students work with companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Dyson and BMW and study in a professionally active department where staff are involved in commercial projects with companies such as Berghaus, BAA and Adidas.
An optional year of supervised professional work experience enhances students employability and they will usually spend the third year gaining professional experience through a paid, supervised work placement. Opportunities range from small local design consultancies to major companies and overseas placements with multinational corporations such as BMW or Mercedes-Benz in Germany. As an alternative to work placements, students can study for a year in a European design school through the Erasmus scheme. Previous students have studied in Orleans, France and Stuttgart, Germany. TEXTILE DESIGN BA (HONS) Textile Design 2016 graduates have created a body of dynamic, innovative and commercially relevant design collections showcased at the international trade show Premiere Vision Designs in Paris. This graduating year features competition winners from The Bradford Textiles Society Competition and includes prizewinning designs selected for production as the result of live projects with national and internationally based companies. Our course encourages creativity and individuality; guiding students to find a personal design direction and they have every opportunity to put their craftsmanship and innovative thinking into action in live commercial projects and work placements. Students demonstrate an exciting range of high level specialist work in weave, knit, mixed media (embroidery and embellishment) and print for the fashion and interior markets which can also be seen at the graduate showcase New Designers Part 1 in July. The course continues to provide top graduates into employment for a range of well-regarded luxury brands and companies such as Aston Martin, Next, John Smedley, Marks and Spencer, George, Dorothy Perkins, Primark and Zoffany.
