WELCOME TO DE MONTFORT UNIVERSITY CONTOUR FASHION AND CONTOUR FASHION (COMMUNICATION) CONTOUR FASHION at De Montfort University, Leicester (DMU) has for many decades been situated at the forefront of developing a talented new generation of intimate apparel designers, within the global fashion market. The course benefits from influential industry liaisons and captures wider fashion affiliations. It works to enhance and encourage innovation, creativity, fabric technology advancement, sustainability, garment construction, technological advancements in grading techniques, and to provide an innate awareness of multiple skills within this industry. CONTOUR FASHION (COMMUNICATION) congratulates its first graduates this year and we are immensely proud of their achievements. The course delivers a diverse and multi-disciplined degree programme, offering career opportunities in marketing, promotion, trend, product development and entrepreneurship. Designed to meet the changing requirements of this global industry, the course centres on the need to develop graduates with a wider skillset, and an understanding of digital marketing strategies. It incorporates concept inspiration, idea development, image, trend prediction, styling, enterprise and business, industry and communication skills, social media and marketing with an entirely 2D focus. The students benefit from a strong awareness of the industry’s marketing directives and are encouraged to develop an equally rich set of skills within intimate apparel, in readiness for a career across a varied global landscape.

Within DMU, we are dedicated in producing students who have developed a breadth of creative skills and both the academic and technical teams strive to provide our students with a rich and rewarding experience. We deliver insight into the technicality of intimate apparel pattern cutting and 2-3D resolution, alongside digital creativity and construction detailing. We produce outstanding graduates who demonstrate aesthetic design innovation and technological excellence in the fields of lingerie, corsetry, swimwear, nightwear, loungewear, menswear, sportswear, athleisure and medical applications. With great support from both the staff and the technical team, students are able to realise their full potential and develop extended skills, to prepare for the workplace. We engage with global fashion houses, retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, models and celebrities to inspire and support our students so they can meet the demands of the industry and achieve their aspirations. By nurturing their talent and creativity, we encourage our students not to just meet expectations, but to challenge and exceed them. In addition to academic studies, we offer project-related study trips combined with international experience. Students visit trade fairs such as Interfilière in Paris, to allow them to link directly with industry, and are provided with opportunities to take part in research trips to London. Many of our students have also participated in DMU Global trips, with students visiting Berlin, Copenhagen, Hong Kong, New York, and Thailand. We are proud to have educated key industry players cited within major international companies globally, and our graduates are employed by Stretchline, Clover International Hong Kong, Ace Style, Heidi Klein, Coco de Mer, Curvy Kate, H&M Sweden, F&F, Bravissimo, Calvin Klein, Victoria’s Secret New York, Tommy Hilfiger Amsterdam, PD China, Concepts Paris, Hunkemoller and Tutti Rouge. Other graduates have established their own brand labels including Nichole de Carle, Lascivious, Tatu Couture, Biondi, Karolina Laskowska and Elissa Poppy.

In 2020, we were excited to launch the new Contour Fashion Innovation MA programme, providing opportunities for graduates and industry practitioners to explore an area of specialism or continue developing a conceptual practice in the field of Contour Fashion, at postgraduate level. Areas of study explore creativity, technologies and entrepreneurship, alongside the technical considerations of this complex, specialism. The programme encourages visionary, innovative practice and a critical approach to contemporary global challenges facing designers and businesses, including sustainability. We welcomed our first cohort in September 2020 where we worked alongside the next generation of sector leaders and innovators on exciting and ground-breaking projects, to help define the future of our revered industry. Details can be found here dmu.ac.uk/contour-fashion-innovation The students have made us particularly proud this year by swiftly adapting and responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the culmination of their work was not as we had planned, our students rose to the challenge and maintained their innate determination to achieve, continuing to develop work of an exceptionally high level. The cohort adapted quickly to the changes, capturing outstanding results of which we, as a staff team, are immensely proud. On behalf of our students graduating from the Contour Fashion and Contour Fashion (Communication) course for 2020, we are delighted to showcase their skills, creativity and innovation. GYMSHARK DESIGN COMPETITION Gymshark is the UK’s fastest growing fitness apparel brand. They linked with Contour Fashion students to complete a project that embraced a sustainable aspect and concluded with constructed product. The students presented to members of the Gymshark design team and received face-to-face feedback. The winning students were: Felicity Dodson (first prize), Emily Davis (second prize) with Amelia Perryman (third prize). The Gymshark design team presented the prizes, alongside DMU Contour Fashion alumna Emma McNaughton.

We were really pleased that the athleisure product was widely embraced by the students as it is such a key area for Contour Fashion design.

DMU GLOBAL TRIP TO PARIS 16-21 January 2020 The annual DMU Global Contour Fashion Paris trip enabled 45 students to spend five days in the French capital to visit Salon International de la Lingerie and Interfilière Paris, at Porte de Versailles, enabling them to be introduced to the wider lingerie industry. The students particularly enjoyed the fashion show and Concepts Paris trends. They also had opportunity to visit the Charlotte Perriand exhibition at Foundation Louis Vuitton and to conduct market and design inspiration research for their second term-studies. A banner was created by Contour Fashion (Communication) graduate, Melissa Holden, to be part of the visual representation of DMU for Concepts Paris, being situated in the Trend Arena for Interfilière. This featured a corset dress by Contour Fashion alumna, Lois Williams.

FASHANNE AWARDS 2020 This year’s Fashanne Awards took place in a digital format on 30 July 2020 and we were proud to support, from a number of nominations, two Contour Fashion students to take part in this competition. Felicity Dodson with ‘Sustainable futuristic athleisure’ was entered into the Athleisure category, and Sara Pound with ‘Morphology’, was entered into the Sustainability category. The lead judge was the enigmatic Patrick Grant, from the BBC’s Great British Sewing Bee fame, together with a host of fashion industry leaders, spearheaded by BBC presenter Anne Davies. Anne led the competition to capture the cream of university fashion students in sharing their innovation.

CONTOUR FASHION INNOVATION MA PROGRAMME We are proud to have Contour Fashion and CFC team member Catherine Livingstone heading up the new MA Programme this year which encourages visionary, innovative practice and a critical approach to contemporary global challenges facing designers and businesses, including sustainability. The validation panel for the programme commended the embracing by design of key university initiatives including sustainability and entrepreneurship. Iain Archer, Validation panel member stated: “DMU have a very strong case for the proposal of this niche MA, built on an excellent history and reputation in this specialism. Within the course the support and staff diversity across the units looks very strong.”

SUMMER SCHOOL ADH 2020

Felicity Dodson’s Athleisure pieces.

Members of the Design Cultures team Melanie Petch and Ruth Jindal set up a fantastic summer school webinar open to all faculties, which captured the following aspects for open discussion; • LinkedIn – how to build a winning profile • How to prepare for an online or video interview • Virtual tour of digital careers resources (My Gateway and DMU skills hub) Students were able to engage with the invited guests and to link with the Q&A sessions. We were proud to have alumni involved. Graduates Elissa Grainger (owner, Elissa Poppy) and Gemma Cheyne were on the Q&A panel for emerging designers. They discussed their growing businesses in the field of intimate apparel. Students feedback for the event included:

Sara Pound’s sustainable ‘Morphology’ lingerie.

“The conversations about how to start a business were insightful, and I enjoyed the transferable skills gained from university to the workplace and the Q&A with graduates. I felt they were at a good stage in their careers to give helpful information.” “The positivity helped to change our attitude towards the situation. It was great feeling like there are people there to help us, getting help with artist statement and hearing from people who are in the industry or have graduated recently.”

EXTERNAL CLIENT SECOND YEAR SUSTAINABILITY PROJECT- FREED OF LONDON DANCEWEAR AND SQUAT LTD GYM WEAR This year’s second year external client project centred around the development of a new sustainable activewear product. Students could choose between designing a proposal for either Freed of London dancewear or Squat Ltd gym wear, aligning their work to one or more of

the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. Both clients played an active role in supporting student projects and provided invaluable insight into the different considerations of product design, development, production, marketing and business ethics. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, students were

not able to present their work in situ, however students received some fantastic feedback from the brands and much praise for their innovative approach and professionalism. Exceptional work from the class of 2020!

SUSTAINABILITY ETHICS BECOME AN INTEGRAL PART OF CONTOUR / CFC Mik Pieniazek, Senior Lecturer in Product Design, delivered his excellent work on sustainable design and circular fashion to level six students to help underpin the external client project for 2019. He also supported the sustainability ‘Teach in’ week during which level four students aligned their learning to feed into their trend projects. The 18 sustainable design principles are now displayed in all studios within the Contour department. Industry professional Rachel Higginbottom visited DMU for the sustainability ‘Teach in’ week, to present insights gained from working in Germany for two of fashion’s most sustainable companies, ranked second and fourth on the 2020 transparency index by Fashion Revolution. In a lecture titled: ‘Creativity in the circular economy. What is the future role of the designer?’ Rachel discussed pillars, goals and policy in conjunction with roles and values to present a future vision for the role of the designer. This learning experience fresh from industry highlighted how businesses operate across different countries.

UNDERLINES MAGAZINE SHOOT, JANUARY 2020 Each year, Pamela Scott, Managing Editor of Underlines Magazine and The Swimwear Yearbook supports the Contour course by showcasing the students’ external client project work. This year the project was aligned with Gymshark and H&M, and we were proud to have them featured in this international magazine. The photographs were taken by Ali Lomas, who is also a senior nursing sister at the The Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham, for the NHS. The photoshoot took place in both The Queens Building and Trinity House Chapel, both on the DMU campus.

H&M DESIGN COMPETITION

MEDICAL FORUM

Students were presented with a design competition from famous international brand H&M to create new design concepts that would uphold their embedded ethos of design, capturing sustainability, but retaining their distinct lingerie branding.

Following DMU’s successful Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) award, we were delighted to announce the launch of the DMU Medical Forum in November 2019, which was set up to work towards defining and supporting key areas of health and medical applications.

The winners were Stephanie Gomes (first prize), with her fashion forward outfit, Anna Lakomska (second prize) and Florence Stanley (third prize), who designed a set capturing 3D printing. H&M visited three times during this external client project. Their engagement greatly inspired the students regarding the ethics of sustainability within design. Lisa Skoglund-Kangasniemi, H&M’s Talent Acquisition Partner, was incredibly supportive of the students, and she, alongside Contour Fashion alumna Rachel Davis were impressed with the outcomes.

The winner Stephanie Gomes (right) with Christina Bager (centre) and Felicity Smith (left) from H&M.

Anna Lakomska was awarded second prize by H&M.

An international audience of 52 guests attended, introduced by Simon Bradbury, Dean for the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. Presentations were given by Mr John Krupa, Head of Breast Surgery and Oconoplasty at Glenfield Hospital and Dr Nick Ibery, Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine with support from Gillian Proctor, Associate Professor of Enterprise. Student researchers Victoria Evans and Melissa Holden were also a vital part of the programme. The project was a finalist for the Leicestershire Live Innovation Awards, a wonderful accolade for all involved. The aim of the forum continues to engage with the wider medical community, patients and related industries and work collaboratively to establish a centre of excellence in the field of medical innovation and support. The initial work with post-surgical breast cancer patients is ongoing and currently both students and patients have contributed to the forum with the development of new outcomes considering mastectomy and lumpectomy. We foresee this as a defined area of growth for the future, with student involvement being paramount, and look forward to further collaborative elements as the areas of research begin to widen.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY For International Women’s Day, Royce Lingerie shared stories of inspiring women from all walks of life and corners of the globe who have excelled in their fields and made positive impacts on the world.

Florence Stanley’s designs were awarded third prize.

Contour Fashion third years on competition day.

TIK TOK AWARDS 2020 We were very proud of 2020 graduate Megan Cornhill’s success in being selected for a TikTok merchandise design and residency competition project with Graduate Fashion Week to produce garments for the app TikTok as part of their merchandise. Megan’s winning garment was her black holster skirt. She was awarded £500 expenses and was invited to London to participate in the five-day TikTok residency in July. The week included, realising designs into commercial patterns, taking part in a production line, producing her garment to gift to their influencer community, and being visited by special Graduate Fashion Week VIP guests.

DMU GLOBAL TRIP TO NEW YORK Contour Fashion students were among a group of finalyear cohorts from across the university who joined the fourth DMU Global trip to New York. The trip gave them the opportunity to gain a wide cultural awareness, align relevant, contextual and market knowledge, and be inspired in creating their final collections by linking directly with international brands within the intimate apparel global forum. Students had the opportunity to engage with the lingerie brand ‘Adore Me’, with a visit to their New York HQ. The Head of Design is alumna Helen Mears. Numerous exhibitions also provided enriching visual inspiration.

#IWANTTOBE #IWANTTOBE is an outreach project, aiming to provide opportunities for students at local schools to take part in a research and creative design project, highlighting career opportunities and experiencing all that the DMU campus has to offer. Students visited the Contour workrooms and took part in creative tasks before taking the project back to their own schools to continue with the design and making process. Focussing on the growing sportswear market, students designed a range of innovative sports garments before creating a corresponding logo which was printed onto fabric ready to create a sports accessory. It was so encouraging to see these young people intrigued by the possibilities of a career in design. The project was led by our new staff member Abbie Swinfield, Lecturer, Contour Fashion.

TERRY MANSFIELD We feel it is important to acknowledge the sad passing, by Covid-19, of Terry Mansfield, CBE, President and CEO of The National Magazines Association, (Bazaar, Elle etc) and Chairman of Graduate Fashion Week. Terry was a huge supporter of the Contour Fashion course and never missed a Contour Fashion Catwalk Show, citing it as one of ‘The most innovative and creative shows on the runway’.
