Contour

Welcome to De Montfort University (DMU) Contour Fashion Catwalk Show. I am delighted that you have joined us for the 2016 Contour Fashion Catwalk Show. This annual event gives our Contour Fashion students an experience of a lifetime as their skills, creativity and innovation are shown off to some of the biggest names in industry, journalists and bloggers from across the world. Contour Fashion at DMU is the only course in the world dedicated to intimate apparel design which combines heritage and innovation. Our course has been the driving force behind innovative solutions in the wider arena of intimate apparel through advances in fabric technology, garment production and manufacturing methodologies. The course also benefits from strong relationships with influential industry partners including the International Institute of Intimate Apparel, an advisory body that works to promote education, innovation, ecological and health issues, and research for the future of the industry. As an acknowledged leader in creative education, we work tirelessly to give our students a rich and rewarding experience. With our support, they realise their full potential and are fully prepared for the workplace. We engage with global fashion houses, retailers, manufacturers, suppliers, models and music celebrities to inspire and support our students to meet the demands of industry and to realise their creative aspirations. By nurturing their talent and creativity, we encourage our students not to just meet expectations, but to exceed them.

We produce outstanding graduates in aesthetic design innovation and technological excellence in the fields of lingerie, corsetry, nightwear, loungewear, menswear, sportswear and bodywear. We are proud to have educated key industry players for major international companies in the USA, Sri Lanka, The Netherlands, France, Sweden, Australia, China and Taiwan. Our graduates are employed by Gossard, ASOS, Clover International Ltd, Berketex Bride, Grace Loves Lace, DVS Fashion, MAS, Fleur of England, Misguided, Boohoo, H&M Sweden, George, Tesco, Gainway, Haddow, GAP New York, Panache and West End Clothing. CRINOLINE CAGES DMU alumni and students’ final-year garments were showcased at Sands, the Academy Award-winning costumiers in London. The crinolines were displayed at the launch of Crinoline; Fashion’s Most Magnificent Disaster, a new book by French photographer Denis Pellerin and astrophysicist and stereo photography expert and rock legend, Brian May. Eight DMU crinolines were featured: Selina Bond’s moulded carbon fibre, Elissa Grainger’s red lace silicone, Sian Whitefoot’s white lace and tulle, Jade Little’s wooden moulded, Samantha Tretton’s cream Guipure lace, Christina Hallet-Young’s laser cut red metal, Katherine Blake’s blue floral lace and Louisa Haywood’s laser cut leather on a steel frame.

The crinolines were shown alongside a Vivienne Westwood ‘mini crini’ and costumes from the 2012 film Anna Karenina. Five DMU crinolines showcased at the V&A Museum in an evening in conversation with Brian May, in support of the current exhibition ‘Undressed: A brief history of underwear.’ Co-author Denis Pellerin was “stunned” by the quality of the DMU garments and the ‘innovative use of different materials.’ “We have written the story of the crinoline up to the 2000s. It now belongs to these talented designers to continue the story.” - Brian May

NEW DESIGNER OF THE YEAR, UK LINGERIE AWARDS

ALESHA DIXON Alumna Nicole de Carle recently dressed Alesha Dixon in a fabulous bodysuit for her music DVD, ‘Do it for Love’. MOBO award winning Alesha is the new face of the brand.

Alumna Selina Bond’s stunning collection of moulded carbon fibre body pieces and luxury lace lingerie inspired by Italian nuns, was recently awarded New Designer of the Year at the UK Lingerie Awards. Selina’s collection thrilled the audience at the Contour Catwalk Show at the Truman Brewery during Graduate Fashion Week in 2014. Selina won the Christopherson Prize for Creativity, has been featured globally in magazines and is the recipient of the Crucible Award to launch her own brand. In relation to her UKLA award, Selina said: “The pivotal moment for me was being picked by my tutors to take part in the annual MODA UK fashion show. They encouraged me to create something new and ‘out there’ for my project.”

MA CONTOUR

ST ANDREWS FASHION AWARD Elissa Grainger opened last year’s catwalk show with a stunning red silicone engineered UV sensitive lace collection, working in conjunction with Stretchline UK. She recently won the New Designer Award at the famous St Andrews Fashion Awards where HRH The Duke of Cambridge spotted his future wife modelling. This year, the show partnered with mental health charity SANE, and finalists worked to the creative theme ‘BARE’ to unveil their raw talent to the fashion world while helping to strip mental health of stigma. Elissa said: “I really embraced the creative theme with my collection. It plays with the notion of exposed skin to convey how mental health struggles can leave people feeling vulnerable.” Elissa also represented Contour Fashion as part of the international team supporting the UK Government’s GREAT Festivals of Creativity event in Beijing. Elissa’s outfits were showcased alongside Jimmy Choo’s work.

DMU is delighted to announce the first graduates from the MA in Contour Fashion, the only intimates master’s course in the world. Contour is one of several options offered as part of the MA in Fashion and Textiles now offered at DMU.

Elissa said: “Contour Fashion has great links with industry and equips you with all the skills employers are looking for. I got to work with lots of different brands and had the chance to make contact with industry experts in both professional and relaxed environments. The course tutors really get behind you and help you make the most of your talent. They really instilled a strong sense of professionalism in us and made my time at DMU very worthwhile.”

“I would recommend the course to someone who has worked in industry, or has had a few years out of university and wants to bring their own ideas, and the knowledge gained after their undergraduate course, back to focus on something specific. It is not an extension of the undergraduate course and you have to be extremely comfortable to work independently whilst utilising the knowledge and experience of the tutors and the DMU facilities as much as you can. If you come in with a determination and are able to drive your own projects, it can be very worthwhile.” Megan Hutchens, Contour Fashion MA, graduate

THE LEATHERSELLERS’ COMPANY AWARD The Leathersellars Award for innovative use of leather in a collection was won by DMU graduate Isla Gilbertson for her Mad Max inspired under/outerwear collection. The successful mix of print, denier, faux fur and leather earned her a runner-up position in the Midlands Fashion Awards. Isla has gone on to work as a junior swimwear designer in Australia.

GOSSARD Final-year students worked with established UK brand Gossard to design a ‘Glamourzonian’ three-piece boudoir/nightwear black label collection. Four winners were selected: Rebecca Harkins, Eliza McCann, Indiana Maslin and Betsan Evans. The winning garments will be showcased as part of the VIP evening catwalk event at Freemasons’ Hall. Gossard hope to put the designs into production with the brand. “An incredible opportunity to design something for industry and to further develop my surface embellishment techniques.” Indiana Maslin “‘Lovely to have professionals from the industry recognise your work. This is an experience I will take forwards in my career.” Becky Harkins

“The course at DMU taught me really valuable skills that I can use within the industry. I have to admit it could be stressful at times but then so is the fashion industry. It was a great course with a great atmosphere and a great family of girls who all looked after each other.” Isla Gilbertson
