FASHION DESIGN BA (HONS) — De Montfort University
Fashion Design BA (Hons) is an exciting and dynamic course which inspires students to explore the relationship between design and technology. This emphasis fosters creativity within a theoretical and philosophical framework supported by technical skill and accomplishment, blending theory with practice. Our graduates meet the demand for designers who can confidently bridge the boundaries between creativity, technology, and design in the fashion industry. Skilled graduates are highly desirable in the marketplace, and graduates of the Fashion Design BA (Hons) are placed in esteemed and influential companies in the UK and internationally. There are opportunities to work on external project briefs set by industry as well as prestigious national and international competitions. The course offers the opportunity to specialise in project work for womenswear, menswear or fashion knitwear, gaining specialist design and technical expertise relevant to a range of fashion activities, from initial design concept through to the finished prototype. By nurturing their talent and creativity, we encourage our students not to just meet expectations, but to exceed them.
RECENT SUCCESSES WAREHOUSE DESIGN COMPETITION 2014 Winner Christiana Hadjipapa – Christiana’s collection was inspired by the multiculturalism and diversity of London and modern digital design. The unique pieces feature collage-style prints, sporty silhouettes and unexpected details like translucent PVC overlays. The competition was run in collaboration with the British Fashion Council and Christiana’s superb winning collection was assessed by a team of high-profile judges. Following the conclusion of her internship at Warehouse in December, Christiana quickly secured a full-time job at high-end fashion company KTZ in London. This is the second time a DMU fashion student has won this competition. In 2011, Shivani Chavda had her collection produced and sold across Warehouse stores, and she has recently decided to return to education to study an MA.
FASHION AWARENESS DIRECT COMPETITION – THE DESIGN THEORY Runner-up Francesca Phipps – Francesca created a stunning streetwear collection responding to the physics of sound which was influenced by the aesthetics of hip-hop culture and beatboxing, and considering spectrograms and sound waves to create original digital prints. Finalist Catriona Pringle – Catriona pursued the idea of volume, proportion and space through colour blocking for her collection. Shortlisted from over 100 student entries nationwide across 40 universities, the 2015 winners and finalists represent the freshest talent set to graduate from UK universities this summer. Their entries were judged by a panel of industry experts.
CLOTHES SHOW LIVE – MADE IN BRITAIN DESIGN COMPETITION Winner Amy Jordan – Amy created an appealing owl jumper dress and her design was placed into production and sold at the Clothes Show Live event as well as online. This competition ‘Design a British Christmas Jumper’ was run in association with the company Jack Masters with the challenge to reinvent and refashion the traditional British Christmas jumper to produce an on-trend, innovative and highly creative, limited-edition garment for an Autumn/Winter collection.
MERCHANT TAYLORS’ GOLDEN SHEARS TAILORING AWARDS
DAVID BAND TEXTILES AWARD – GRADUATE FASHION WEEK
The three finalists represented DMU in this prestigious competition which recognises the best of British craftsmanship. Jack Dorman, Florence Tudgay and Hazel Simmons showcased their designs at a Gala catwalk at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall. The garments were judged on the interpretation of design, accuracy of cutting and craft-tailoring skills.
Runner-up Lydia Bilsborough – Lydia’s unique collection demonstrated the exploration of the creative textile process with a distinctive and thought-provoking fashion statement in constructed textiles. Her unique approach to creating her textiles with the use of vinyl, surface decoration and weave revealed a control of the quality of the colour and pattern and challenged the established boundaries of technical excellence.
CLOTHES SHOW YOUNG DESIGNER OF THE YEAR
SOPHIE HALLETTE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Finalist Laura White – Laura was among nine other finalists who showcased their work on the catwalk during the Clothes Show event. Laura created a three-piece catwalk outfit which captured the effortless style of London with its rich mix of cultural inspirations and influences.
BFTA FUR DESIGN COMPETITION 2015 Finalist Tendai Motiwa – Tendai’s menswear outerwear outfit and portfolio work was selected for its innovative use of texture and combination; more specifically the use of faux fur and different fur types. The portfolio also displayed unique techniques for the construction process as well as being brave and original with the design.
Finalists Nadia Kelly and Florence Tudgay – Nadia and Tudgay were thrilled when renowned French lace and tulle manufacturer Sophie Hallette, who cater to the fashion greats in haute couture and ready-towear, selected their menswear and womenswear collections as finalists based on their innovative designs and the use of lace in a non-conventional way.
THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF FRAMEWORK KNITTERS AWARD Winner of The Peshall Hirst Bursary Award Catriona Pringle – The Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters is a medieval trade guild dating back to the 16th century which supports the knitting and hosiery industry. Catriona was awarded for her innovative knitwear investigation. Her designs were based on the work of her grandma, who had a sewing school in the 1960s and 1970s. Catriona utilised this ‘family archive’ and traditional techniques, and modernised the silhouettes with the use of more contemporary yarns and techniques, blending heritage with innovation.
