CELEBRATING DIVERSITY, CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION
WELCOME TO THE
We are delighted that you have joined us for our Art & Design Degree Show. We are proud to showcase some of the spectacular work of our Class of 2020 students from across our art, design, architecture, fashion and textiles courses. In a truly extraordinary year shaped by the many challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, the Class of 2020 have not only demonstrated immense resilience and adaptability, but have used these circumstances as a vehicle to create some of the most inspiring and reflective work we have seen. For the very first time, we are excited to launch our first Degree Show Instagram account to celebrate their achievements.

Every year, the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities brings together award-winning student work, world-leading research and the innovative thinking of our many creative disciplines as part of an exhibition. This unique year has presented many challenges and we’ve had to adapt to present the show in a new digital format. As an acknowledged leader in creative education, we work tirelessly to give our students a rich and rewarding experience. During this time, our students have shown huge determination, and used their ingenuity to produce work that challenges minds and pushes boundaries. With the move to remote working, our students have been remarkable in creating their own home studios to complete their final projects and have also developed a breadth of new skills that will prepare them for the industry developments ahead. Our strong industry links, placements, lectures by industry professionals and opportunities to work on live commercial briefs all equip them to realise their full potential and enter the workplace ready to make a valuable contribution from the beginning. As part of our Art & Design Degree Show, students will have the opportunity to interact with industry and alumni through online live events, gaining advice to prepare them for their future careers. Our graduates go on to work for highprofile brands such as the BBC, Tommy Hilfiger, Mothercare, Abercrombie & Fitch, Dyson, BMW, Next and Adidas. Each year we take this opportunity to recognise the many successes of our students and the rewarding experiences that have enriched their studies. This year, exceptional circumstances have led to an exceptional display of generosity and we are proud of the students and staff who have volunteered to support the local community by making plastic visors, face masks and scrubs for frontline health workers.
Fashion Textile Design student Elizabeth Walecki, was one of just nine designers in the country to be awarded this year’s £2,500 Company Bursary by the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters. Elizabeth impressed the judges - before social distancing and lockdown measures were introduced with her highly technical designs knitted on a 10 gauge dubied machine. Her work has also earned her a £500 bursary from The Textile Society which she used to create home studio to complete her final collection. Fashion Design graduate and People’s Choice Award X Shein 2019 winner Maria Esa, has seen her designs put into commercial production with a capsule collection for Browns. Mariah’s work was also featured as part of The GREAT Britain Campaign advert, which celebrates the enormous wealth of talent nurtured by UK higher education. I am also proud to say that our Architecture MArch graduate, Daniel Hambley won 1st prize BB student award in an internal Architecture competition. The SKYHIVE 2020 Skyscraper Challenge is the third annual architecture competition by Bee Breeders seeking innovative concepts and ideas for an iconic high rise tower. Congratulations to all of our students and enjoy the show!

COLOUR PALETTE In the case of colour palette, Victoria’s Secret is known for its captivating and bright colour assortment. As previously noted, the brand’s image comprises pink shades combined with black and white which are reflected in almost every product design. That includes carrier bags, store layout and social media plan. However, the visual perception of Victoria’s Secret needs to expand. Having investigated the UK lingerie market, many brands are striving to match Victoria’s Secret’s standards by including similar visuals and colours in their business. Another significant aspect of considering colour psychology within the business is that it affects problem-solving skills, decision-making and purchasing behaviour (Weinreb, 2018).
REBRANDING
T
he current debate about Victoria’s Secret’s brand position identifies an exceptional viewpoint on visual rebranding. Building on from the idea that Victoria’s Secret needs to review its market position, this section illustrates the advantages of changing the price, style and design. The strength of such a proposal is that the brand will be able to stand out from its leading competitors and make people talk about it. The online illustrations, typography and a combination of black, white and purple colours make the brand compete with one of the direct competitors such as Boux Avenue for consumers’ support and loyalty (Appendix.5). Those customers not efficiently aware of lingerie brands may seek an affordable alternative without considering Victoria’s Secret’s mission and values.
