More than 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK alone. That’s two women every 10 minutes. This is the fastest growing cancer and a huge threat to women and men globally. The Breast Cancer Care charity works tirelessly to support patients through these challenging times, so DMU’s Contour Fashion students have adopted this charity for their fundraising once again this year. Graduating student Roshni Desai has made a fabulous range of breast cancer keyrings which are available at etsy.com/uk/shop/roshnidesaijewellery We’d really appreciate you making a donation at www.breastcancercare.org.uk

MEDICAL FORUM

GYMSHARK DESIGN COMPETITION Gymshark is the UK’s fastest growing fitness apparel brand. As part of the Gymshark design competition, Contour Fashion students visited the company’s headquarters in Birmingham to meet with its founder and design and technical teams. This provided the opportunity for winners to present their work and receive face-to-face feedback. The winning students – Emma McNaughton, Tara Newton and Heledd Davies – were able to present their garments directly to Gymshark founder Ben Francis, talent director Ed Priestnall and the design team, including DMU Contour Fashion alumna Isla Gilbertson.

Tara Newton and Jessica Basey’s designs (pictured) were joint second

Following DMU’s successful Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) award, we are delighted to announce the launch of the DMU Medical Forum, working to define and support key areas of health and medical applications. Our aim is to engage with the medical community, patients and our related industries to work collaboratively to establish a centre of excellence in the field of medical innovation and support. Initially working with post-surgical breast cancer patients, students and patients have already contributed to the forum with the development of mastectomy and lumpectomy outcomes. We see this as a key area of growth for the future. Student involvement in the forum is key, and already reaping benefits.

COCO DE MER DESIGN COMPETITION Students were challenged in a design competition from famous British brand Coco de Mer to create new design concepts that would uphold their brand ethos of empowering women through luxurious and enticing lingerie. Joint winners were Erran MacColl with a black lace fashion forward outfit and Chanice Dwyer, who designed an embroidered Chinese-influenced set. Coco de Mer’s CEO, Lucy Litwack, said: ”As always, I have been so impressed with the level of talent from the Contour Fashion students at DMU.

LEICESTER CITY FOOTBALL CLUB

For International Women’s Day, Royce Lingerie shared stories of inspiring women from all walks of life and corners of the globe who have excelled in their fields and made positive impacts on the world. DMU’s Associate Professor of Contour Fashion, Gillian Proctor, was recommended by recent graduates for consideration in Royce’s celebration of strong women.

Technical staff tutor Julie Swinfield accompanied technical student Jessica Basey to a session with David Rennie, head physiotherapist at Leicester City Football Club. Jessica’s garment development for active sportswear includes a GPS pocket and motion sensors as a form of injury prevention during training. Jessica’s concept was joint runner-up in the Gymshark design competition.

#DMUGLOBAL TRIP TO NEW YORK

PRESENTING AT THE LINGERIE INDUSTRY FORUM IN LATVIA

“I feel as though the students have really captured the essence of the Coco de Mer brand and I have seen some really exciting creative and technical design work, making it very difficult to narrow it down to the winners of the competition. “I am looking forward to the winning students joining us for their internships at our London design studio, because we would love to work with them and help nurture their talent.”

PITCH2WIN DMU’s Pitch2Win competition enables graduating students to pitch for funding which can help turn their idea into a business. This year’s winner, Victoria-Rose Evans, has been working on post-mastectomy bras. She was awarded £1,000 after presenting her design for a one-cup bra, which she developed from patient feedback surveys. She explained: “Having the opportunity to take part in Pitch2Win has been amazing. It has allowed me to pitch my brand Daisy Grace, which focuses on creating a choice for women who have suffered with breast cancer.

“Post-surgical bras are very outdated, and I believe by developing the brand I am going to solve this issue, creating them all with a strong aesthetic design and high-quality fabrics. I could not have done it without the support of my Contour Fashion tutors and my fit model, Tracy Neale, all of whom have worked with me to develop my garments.” Heledd Davies, who pitched her sustainable clothing range, came in second place, winning £750 in funding.

DMU’s Associate Professor for Contour Fashion, Gillian Proctor, was guest of honour at the 4th Lingerie Industry Forum in Liepāja, Latvia. Her keynote presentation, ‘Evolution and Design in Contour Fashion’, was delivered to a global audience, including many Eastern European brands, as part of the celebration of the conference. The day before she delivered a presentation on the history and development of the corset to staff and students at Riga Technical University in the country’s capital.

Contour Fashion students were among a group of final-year students from across the university who joined the third #DMUglobal trip to New York. The trip gave them the opportunity to compile contextual and market evaluations, draw inspirational sources for final collections, embrace a wider cultural appeal and engage directly with international brands. Students visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art to view the Delacroix exhibition and Jewelry: The Body Transformed exhibition. As well as this, they visited Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color at The Museum at The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). All of these experiences offered invaluable inspiration for their final-year collections. Students also had the opportunity to engage with industry brands, with visits to the New York offices of Victoria’s Secret, Adore Me and Aerie (American Eagle).

LCB DEPOT’S REINVENTION OF TRADITION EXHIBITION

BOUX AVENUE LINGERIE AWARD DMU Contour Fashion graduate Daniella Jayes won the Boux Avenue Lingerie Award by the London-based brand in the Lingerie Award at Graduate Fashion Week – Europe’s biggest annual showcase for student fashion designers.

A selection of outfits from Contour Fashion graduates were displayed as part of DMU’s collaboration with Leicester’s LCB Depot, in the Reinvention of Tradition exhibition. It showcased a modern interpretation of traditional design and manufacturing techniques, showcasing the innovative application of cross-disciplinary skills utilised in fashion and textiles. Examples from fashion, textiles and footwear were also showcased. The exhibition is part of the growing relationship between DMU and the wider city of Leicester.

H&M VISIT

DMU’s Associate Dean (International), Dr Manjeet Ridon, and Associate Professor of Contour Fashion, Gillian Proctor, visited the H&M headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. Their visit coincided with discussions for widening international interaction, employability and placements. H&M already employs seven DMU Contour Fashion graduates, all of whom are pictured here with Lisa Skoglund-Kangasniemi, the company’s technical director. DMU Contour Fashion students and H&M will be working on a new technical design project for the next academic year.

Daniella said: ”The Contour Fashion course at DMU is incredible. It was intense work and I feel I was encouraged to push every boundary, so I know I am now prepared to work in the industry. I feel that studying at DMU has been great for my career.”

WINNER OF WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF LEATHERSELLERS AWARD DMU alumna Jade Woodward was the winner of the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers Award with her black leather hipster biker corset, held together with metal bolts. The corset is currently on display at the Leathersellers’ Hall in London. Jade now works as a junior designer at Pistol Panties.

THREE-DIMENSIONAL TREND EXHIBITION This is a collaborative project for second-year students working with brands, Tommy Hilfiger and Wacoal. Working alongside Chris Wright, from DMU’s Leicester Media School Drawing Centre, students embraced a hands-on challenge to produce a 3D trend outcome, experimenting with laser cutting, 3D printing and model making. Special guest judge was Simon Platts at ASOS.
