bergwijkpark master plan and urban plan, municipality of diemen, netherlands
#O1
This was a very complex project developed following two different approaches simultaneously. On the one hand, the office was developing the Master Plan for the whole area of Bergwijkpark [25 ha] in the municipality of Diemen, in the south-east border of Amsterdam. On the other hand, we had to elaborate an urban study and proposal for a private investor in order to develop “immediately” half of that area. The role I was assigned was to take care of the main drawing and some of the graphic output for the Master Plan, and at the same time I worked directly with the director responsible for the project, developing a more detailed urban proposal for the eastern part. For this eastern part, 5 types of neighborhoods with different character were proposed. But at the same time, they had to share a few principles as a part of a whole bigger identity. And, of course, taking into consideration all proposals and regulations specified in the Master Plan was a must. Those “clusters” propose different ways of experiencing and living the city. By mixing high and low density buildings and proposing different typologies to be built we achieved a promising result with an excellent ratio of houses [and parking places] per square meter. One of the main leads to follow concerning the urban and landscape design was to enhance the existing natural elements, such as water or green fields in order to provide an enriching atmosphere. When it comes to the more architectural part, few steps and strong guidelines were settled. The small scale defines the major part of the proposal and the materialization aims for a more traditional “craftsmanship” style in the majority of the plan. Allowing accents and counted exceptions to bring dynamism and interest to the different areas.

dwelling complex renovation and extension in zaanzam, netherlands, selection winner
#O2
The jury, in which, part of the inhabitants of Zaandam were represented, chose KAW’s proposal for the renovation and extension of the dwelling complex . For this matter, I integrated a team together with another two architects and one of the directors. The project’s concept had to meet all the requirements established in the existing urban plan for the development and improvement of the whole neighborhood. For this matter, a more classical and vernacular architectural language was used to define the proposal. But trying, nevertheless, to incorporate a contemporary suggestion by using traditional materials and building techniques to our advantage. The proposal combines the renovation of the old apartments with the extension of the building and mix of targets users. On the one hand the housing for the elderly and on the other hand new younger inhabitants and families. A challenging diversity reunited in a new complex, offering both a new identity and image as a whole, highlighting the immediate surroundings and inviting old and new users to participate from it.

In this proposal I worked directly in the design for the competition together with another architect and the director responsible for the whole project. The new town of Nanqiao [Shanghai] will be soon developed and it requires a new kindergarten for around 150 children aged 0 to 6. LIAG’s approach finally won after being invited to participate in the contest. The first aim for this proposal was to give a south façade to all classrooms and bedrooms, as it is the main requirement in China. At the same time, a strong icon was demanded by the municipality, therefore, providing an interesting shape and aesthetic result was primordial. In addition, the building is articulated around an interior courtyard in order to be efficient and all spaces close enough from each other. All outside spaces [more than 2 000m2] are also south-oriented as required. Following the plot shape and in concordance with the design of the façade and the shape of the building. The main programs used in this project were: Archicad, Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign and 3Dmax.
11
The façade aims at attracting the children’s interest, by bringing colour and playfulness to the outside and adapting smoothly to the building’s shape. It consists of a double layer façade, the interior being completely closed or window and the exterior being microperforated colour or white metal sheet. It brings depth to perception and sun protection, therefore making the building more sustainable. But in order to give direct contact to south, as required, windows meet the outside layer creating interesting playing spots in the interior part.
12
In contrast with the outside aesthetic image, the interior seeks a more ethereal atmosphere. In order to transmit emotions and references, colour is enhanced by the predominant use of white in the background. This choice also strengthens the flexibility of different spaces, creating suitable playing areas in the corridors by opening the multipurpose rooms in the northern part of the building. All together with the courtyard as central core of the kindergarten, all activities can also be performed outside the main classrooms.

In terms of sustainability, the building is thought to act in the most passive way possible. It incorporates simple but effective measures. We first think of the double façade as a solution to face the south and west orientation, in order to maximize isolation and ventilation. The percentage of microperforated area will change following the orientation, in order to provide the ideal relation between shade and natural light going through the façade. The depth and section of these perforated sheets is also taken into account, so it can be effective with different sun positions from the different seasons of the year. 12xx Projectnaam

As Nanqiao has a really extreme climate, we think of geothermal pump system to provide a sustainable exchange of temperature and maintain the building in optimal conditions with the least energy expense as possible. We will also use natural ventilation through buried pipes, making use of the same concept, taking advantage of the earth natural temperature to cool the building during summer and warm it during winter. Rainwater storage is another measure worth mentioning. sustainable 2 ventilation summer day @A3 xx-xx-2012

In this competition I worked directly in the architectural design for the competition together with another architect and the director responsible for the whole project. It consisted in a proposal for a new building, where the municipality asked for a strong exotic facade according to the multicultural environment within one of the toughest areas of The Hague. The program proposed includes shops, different leisure and culture activities, “horeca, a school, fitness area, parking integrated, plantlab facilities, handicraft food floor, different arts&crafts workshops, care&wellness, housing and a hotel. The route along the facade shows the program to the visitors in the inside and calls pedestrians from the outside to visit the building. At the same time, it distributes the public space dedicated all along the building. The concept for the facade is inspired by the different urban shapes of the immediate surroundings by creating a geometrical pattern insinuating Arabic drawings in a modular way. This skin covers the whole building and it is interrupted where the routing materializes in the facade, both for cars and pedestrians. Size of pieces allows views and is thought for a sustainable temperature exchange in the further design. The main programs used in this project: Archicad, Photoshop, Illustrator, inDesign, 3Dmax, and Artlantis.

The routing is always the main concept articulating the building. It develops not only its interior organization but also the composition in the facade. In which we can always see two routes complementing each The main entrance sets the start, but the parking in the middle of the building also acts as an important flow starter, just in the heart of the route, introducing and altering flows in the building, as a powerful articulator.

For my Master Thesis I decided to develop a Contemporary Arts Centre. The intention was designing a building respecting the urban context with clean and clear interior spaces in order to provide as much flexibility as possible. The building’s design had a few requirements: it would have to meet the general criteria of a building with regard to the safety and environment and it had to be integrated in the immediate landscape. In addition it would have to meet the functional criteria of a museum - exhibition spaces together with workspace for artists and museum restoration workers. The complexity of the project consisted in an “L” shape plot in a degraded environment and had to follow the municipality regulations. The building and public square proposed looked for combining a continuous routing of all spaces, including the most private ones. The structure would consist of concrete walls, that shaped all building spaces: exhibition, cafe, shop, workspaces, storage, administration and offices. The materialization was complemented by corten steel deployé sun protectors in the main façades. Installations, construction and building physics requirements were approached and designed. The main programs used in this project: Autocad, Photoshop and inDesign, apart from several construction calculation software.

A ventilated double faรงade will provide the best neutral illumination for the interior. As well as contrbuiting to preserve energy. Together with the concrete walls, which have an inner layer of isolation, the whole will make a more passive building in terms of sustainability.

This project was developed during 8 months at school of architecture as an individual exercise. Consists on a hybrid urban planning, where public and private have a dialog with nature and all new equipments required. A natural River Park design, integrating all buildings, solving the strong borders created by the motorway and the railway in the south-west. This integration had to be developed at the same time as different dwelling typologies were proposed, in a different density depending on the urban plan. As final exercise design of one of the public buildings in the proposal was required up to 1:50 scale with several construction and technical details. The building detailed in this case is an early years school. This building is divided in 4 different areas, administration and teacher rooms, classrooms, gym/covered playground and cantina/common area. Main materials used were as local as possible, wood and stone. According to the strong context in a contemporary way of design. The main programs used in this project: Autodesk autocad, Illustrator, Photoshop and inDesign.

architecture and landscape proposals, housing and thermes in argul, spain.
#O7
Project developed in small team during the second Inhabited landscapes workshop. Our team decided to approach the housing speculation problem by introducing refurbishment and renovation proposals. The home unit and the agrarian buildings are transformed completely with small but powerful volumetric operations. The old buildings not longer in use become singular as well as desirable and adapted to everybody’s today life style, introducing moderate modernity in a small rural village. At the same time, new units are created with the same system, completely integrated and only where and when are needed. The same idea is taken to create a public building in the village. Using the main shape of the traditional house, articulated blocks are created and developed like invader species around the whole village. The goal is creating interesting routes and giving to the small village a strong attraction and income source. The thermal baths, with milk therapy among others, will act as a calling hot spot and will transform the village’s landscape completely. The strong rural nature of the current landscape will be turned and reinforced by these new natural local rock entities. New and old will coexist in a strong but attractive architectonic and urban dialog. The main programs used in this project: Autocad, Photoshop, Illustrator and inDesign.
