When OUR CLIENTS confront challenges, design OFFERS THEM SOLUTIONS THAT WORK. Across the global economy, change is in the air. There’s a realization that the decisions we make in this new decade will have an impact that will still be felt in 2050. Yet there’s an equal need to turn today’s challenges into immediate opportunities—to lay the groundwork for strong new growth. As our clients consider what’s ahead, design is coming to the fore. At times like this, everyone is focused on ROI. Reducing costs, boosting performance, or securing a competitive advantage—these goals demand strategy and innovation. “Design thinking” is getting a lot of attention now in the media because design enables organizations of all types to confront their challenges and find robust, game-changing, ROI-conscious solutions. Design is strategy in action, focused on results. Our clients are contending with a business environment that accentuates geographic, cultural, and other differences. Our strategic and holistic design approach enables them to bridge the diversity and divergence they encounter across their markets. That design works locally and globally is part of its power.

Gensler 2010 Annual Report

This is why Gensler is positioned to deliver design effectively wherever it’s needed. The real world is where the opportunities are. As our clients’ global design partner, we’ve known this for 45 years. In cities around the world, Gensler and our clients are showing how design achieves results that create value for companies and communities and the people they serve. Design works. This decade is a crucial one. Positioning for the future is the challenge—those who get it right will be the leaders in 2020 and beyond. Design is a powerful means to do this effectively. Gensler is the right choice to harness that power—creating value and achieving the results that will set you apart. A Quick guide to design thinking

1

Question what conventional wisdom thinks is possible.

2

Observe what people actually do—and take it seriously.

3

Define the problem in new ways— and connect new dots.

4

Imagine the solutions that best leverage this new reality.

The way forward is seldom more of the same. That’s rarely been clearer than now. Design offers new ideas and the means of fostering the innovation needed to solve the most challenging problems. By envisioning a better future, design helps the world make progress.

DESIGN WORKS TO CREATE VALUE. Pew DC Conference Center Washington, DC, US Gensler helped The Pew Charitable Trusts to renovate 901 E Street, N.W. to house the state-of-the art DC Conference Center and “ensure that the nonprofit community has a convening place to call its own within earshot of national policy makers and opinion leaders,” as Pew puts it. Working closely with Pew, Gensler tailored the new center to the needs of its nonprofit users: 36 rooms, designed “with collaboration in mind,” can accommodate as few as two and as many as 140 people. “An open floor plan and comfortable public areas facilitate gatherings and ad-hoc networking,” Pew adds. Repositioned to achieve LEED CI Gold/EB Silver certification, the building is a short walk from rapid transit and from the city’s corridors of power. The center is part of Pew’s Gensler-designed headquarters.

Creating value is why we design. By giving form to strategy, we make strategy actionable in the real world. By posing new possibilities, we resolve dilemmas and get past obstacles and constraints. Design for us needs to be emotionally intelligent, because people experience it. Their responses to great design go to the heart of the value it provides. There’s a clear link between human satisfaction and enjoyment and the spirit with which they engage in the different activities of life. For us, great design is sustainable, too. We aim for high performance and we look beyond each project’s intended useful life to ask how it can be renewed, reused, or recycled. What we design is flexible and open-ended, ready for whatever challenges the future throws at it. Design wants to be robust so that its value will endure.

Gensler 2010 Annual Report

7.5%

The International Monetary Fund mid-2010 forecast of GDP growth in Asia.

In emerging economies, GDP growth is boosted by the push to modernize. In developed countries, increased productivity is the driver. Behind gains in productivity is innovation. Design works for both.

We know how to realize the value of design at every scale—small, medium, or large—and in every location. When we work with our clients, the first step is to understand their expectations—their value proposition for the project or program. Together, we create a scorecard that sets out what value means and how it will be measured. As we explore the project’s opportunities through design, new ideas and directions are posed. Our focus is on innovation that adds tangibly to ROI through higher performance.

3PNC Plaza Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US 3PNC Plaza sets the stage for Pittsburgh to become a model of smart, sustainable urban growth. The hybrid nature of the 750,000square-foot, 23-story mixed-use development adds value to the downtown core, feeding energy and commerce into the city. A LEED Gold–registered project, the complex includes a Fairmont Hotel, offices, condominiums, and groundfloor retail. This combination of diverse uses in a single project— strategically placed at the intersection of downtown Pittsburgh’s commercial and cultural corridors, close to PNC Park—catalyzes and rejuvenates the city.

DESIGN WORKS TO FOSTER COMMUNITY.

Gensler 2010 Annual Report

Communities are constantly challenged by events in the world and events on the ground. Design works to stretch their resources, achieving vitally important goals with true economy of means. Design can be the change agent that transforms them, puts them on the map, and gets them from good to great. It works for communities the same way it works for business. The need for strategy, the desire for robust solutions—they’re just as strong, every bit as crucial. Gensler engages communities at many different points: emotional touchstones, places of learning and enjoyment, the settings of civic life. Our work for them also exemplifies our shared commitment to sustainability. Communities are in it for the long haul.

20:1

The world is urbanizing. By 2030, developing countries will add 2 billion city dwellers; developed countries will add 100 million.

The action will be in developing countries. Their challenge is to manage growth effectively so their megacities are livable. For cities in developed countries, the challenge is to stay competitive.

Communities rarely go it alone. They look to the private sector to contribute in myriad ways to the quality and vitality of urban life. These partnerships are mutually beneficial and reinforcing. They can be focused on buildings, on infrastructure, or on the lively, amenity-filled settings that activate the cityscape. Design ensures that they contribute directly to the quality and vitality of urban life. It provides the framework for managing growth, sustaining prosperity, and reviving economic conditions. Design works to help communities thrive.

DESIGN WORKS AT EVERY SCALE. Shanghai Tower Shanghai, CN The 2,074-foot-high Shanghai Tower will be China’s tallest and the world’s second tallest building when it opens in 2014. The breakthrough design cuts wind loads by 24 percent, reducing the tower’s weight by 32 percent and its construction cost by $58 million. The lightweight outer skin encloses garden atriums every 15 floors, giving identity and amenity to the tower’s nine vertical neighbor hoods. A six-level retail podium connects to the Shanghai Metro and provides a world-class retail setting for office workers, hotel guests, and tower visitors in the heart of the city’s international financial district. Outside, the tower is set within a park-like plaza that links it visually to nearby super-tall towers and a new public park. Shanghai Tower is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification and China’s Green Building Three Star rating.

While megaprojects like Shanghai Tower, CityCenter in Las Vegas, DIFC in Dubai, Tameer Towers in Abu Dhabi, and the L.A. LIVE Tower in Los Angeles attract media attention, the vast majority of our work is modest in scale—but not in quality or innovation! Nor does “big” always mean “tall.” Our national and global retail rollout programs add up to “big,” even if the increments are small and tailored for their locations. Mass customization enables us to capture economies of scale while shaping the results to these widely different contexts. Even when we design singular projects, they benefit from our vast real-world experience. Design needs to work well at every scale.

Our Shanghai Tower is 24,001 times larger than our McEvoy Ranch Store in San Francisco. We’ve done larger and, as our McEvoy Ranch olive oil packaging shows, we’ve done even smaller.

“I didn’t know you did that!” We often hear this from our clients. Two decades ago, they were surprised that we designed buildings. Now more than a few are amazed to hear that we do interiors! The range of our work is exceptionally broad—that comes with the territory of a global firm with so many valued clients. We believe strongly that our smallest work informs our largest, and vice versa. Behind all of it is our desire to improve performance. Our Workplace Performance Index® (WPI®) measurement and analysis tool for work settings, for example, has influenced the design of work settings large and small.

DESIGN WORKS ACROSS THE GLOBE. Back in 1965, Gensler was a local firm, based in San Francisco. Today, we design worldwide. We’re organized to deliver projects wherever our clients need them. As the G-8 becomes the G-20, companies in developing countries are also moving into global markets. Wherever they are based, our clients look to us for local knowledge combined with international experience. Our design approach adds value at every step, delivering the quality and performance they need in every location, while taking the individual cultures and contexts into full account. When design works, nothing gets lost in translation. The world looks to design as a vehicle of progress. Increasingly, the benchmarks of innovation and performance are international, even as individual measures of success reflect local priorities and preferences. Organizations operate on world time, but people live and work in real places. Design can bridge between the virtual and face-to-face so knowledge is shared and things progress. Along with that benefit comes another: Goals for cost and efficiency are also met.

DESIGN WORKS TO BENEFIT CLIENTS. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences and JW Marriott at L.A. LIVE Los Angeles, California, US The first new tower in L.A. in 20 years anchors L.A. LIVE, Southern California’s premier setting for professional sports, headline entertainment, and international conferences and conventions. The 54-story tower caps a decade-long effort by Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) to realize its vision. Doubling the size of L.A. LIVE, the tower and podium add two leading hospitality brands, 224 Ritz-Carlton residences with stunning views, and an array of 24/7 attractions and amenities. Targeting LEED Silver, the tower combines a lighter structure with an innovative façade. The tower unifies a varied hotel and residential program as a striking skyline presence. It provides needed transparency while meeting California energy regulations. Along with the tower, Gensler designed the JW Marriott’s banquet and conference center, the Club Nokia live-performance venue, and the 14-screen Regal Cinemas Cineplex.

We use design to make a difference for our clients. Our work helps them to grow market share, increase productivity and innovation, fulfill visions and missions— all the different goals that prompt concerted action in pursuit of strong results. We see design as an essential part of every modern organization’s strategic arsenal—a potent change agent that’s especially relevant to today’s fast-changing conditions. Opportunities need to be seized quickly, which is why we design at the speed of our clients.

Nine out of 10 respondents to Gensler’s WPI survey stated that better office design will make their organization more competitive.

WPI is based on surveys with 97 client organizations to date—some 125,000 office workers polled and 41,000 surveys completed. WPI now addresses mobility and sustainability. The surveys show clearly that high-performance workplace design can increase productivity, collaboration, and engagement.

Benefits deliver on expectations. We’re not afraid to get those expectations on the table and define up front how they’ll be measured. We’re prepared to put skin in the game when that’s appropriate, joining our clients in reaping the rewards when the results are in. We’re not afraid to consider the full range of delivery methods, bringing a global network of expertise—ours and others— to that discussion. Of global design firms, Gensler is the integrator that can mobilize the best talent the world can offer. Our independence and collaborative ethos means that our clients will never have to accept anything less.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Gensler 2010 Annual Report

global review

Gensler 2010 Annual Report

From San Francisco to our newest locations, Bangalore and São Paulo, we take pride in the 35 cities we call home. Yet, becoming a global firm has never been Gensler’s sole objective; rather it’s the outcome of maintaining a resilient focus on delivering design services that enhance clients’ operations wherever they base them.

Message from the executive directors The world is at an inflection point. While “uncertainty” commands headlines and remains a watchword in boardrooms across the globe, Gensler’s outlook is resolutely optimistic. Like our clients, we’ve hardly been immune to the last two years of contraction. Experience tells us that business moves forward after periods of decline. Since 1965, we’ve endured several economic downturns, and each time we’ve emerged in an even stronger position. Despite the challenges of the last two years, Gensler is debt-free and consistently profitable. We’re also hiring, adding to our “constellation of stars” to support new practices, services, and locations. Gensler’s global design and delivery capabilities and entrepreneurial, “one-firm firm” culture make us the effective strategic partner our clients require. At the start of a new decade, our clients and the markets we serve stand at the crossroads of opportunity. Despite the recession, we have invested in our people, practices, and offices, providing them with tools to respond sustainably and innovatively. The result is a global platform for design and delivery: Gensler today is exceptionally well-positioned to help our clients seize opportunities wherever they arise.

GLOBAL Catalysts for Connection Our global footprint is a collection of many smaller, local footprints organized deliberately over four decades. In each location, we seeded operations with a combination of local talent and Gensler culture carriers—all committed to building their city’s best design practice. We’ve established a network of people who care deeply about their communities, building connection points between clients, the design profession, and local interests. Throughout the year, our offices organize events and symposia to address the relevant topics of the day.

GENSLER ORGANIZES SHANGHAI FORUM ON THE SHAPE OF TOMORROW’S CITIES More than half the world’s population now resides in cities, and demographic studies purport that urban expansion will continue for another two decades. With “Metropolitan Landscape 2030,” Gensler organized the event with host Tongji University, in Shanghai, and invited urban planners and government officials from three cities—London, San Francisco, and Shanghai—to explore how issues of growth, transportation, environment, and quality of life are shaping their city’s development. The symposium was the first in a series, with plans for a future gathering at the University of California, Berkeley. The series premise is that regions facing similar urban development issues stand to benefit from sharing their experiences addressing the connections between the urban core, urban edge, and suburbs. X Tongji University

COSTA RICA CONFERENCE CONSIDERS TRANSIT-ORIENTED FUTURE FOR SAN JOSÉ While Costa Rica has experienced impressive growth during the last decade, emerging as an important business and tourist destination, San José’s lack of transit infrastructure has constrained its development. The conference “San José: The Livable City” turned the spotlight on the nation’s capital, its 1.8 million inhabitants, and how the principles of urban development should frame the city’s long-term infrastructure planning. Organized and led by Gensler and international engineers Buro Happold, the public event featured presentations from scholars, government officials, planners, and real estate developers engaging in dialogue about the city’s proposed urban transit system, or TREM. The forum realized the culmination of a year-long Gensler University class, in which next-generation firm leaders tackled a real-world design challenge in a think-tank environment.

LATIN AMERICA PRESENCE EXPANDS WITH BRAZIL LOCATION Gensler recently opened a São Paulo office to provide a South America base to better serve our clients and the growing number of project assignments.

PERSPECTIVES: LEADERS OFFER INSIGHT INTO THE MIDDLE EAST AND ASIA In recent years, we’ve put our people on the ground to support our clients in the Middle East and Asia. To gain insight into what’s happening there, we spoke with Chris Johnson, regional managing principal for Europe and the Middle East, and Dan Winey, regional managing principal for the Pacific Northwest and Asia.

Chris Johnson How long has Gensler been working in the Middle East? Since 1995. Winning The Gate Building and the Dubai International Financial Centre master plan allowed us to build our presence in the region. In the past five years alone, we completed the headquarters for the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority; designed the new Tameer Towers; and master-planned the Saadiyat Island and Al Sowa developments. Projects in construction include The Ritz-Carlton Dubai, The Avenues in Kuwait, and four large schemes for the King Abdullah Financial District in Saudi Arabia. What is Gensler’s long-term vision for the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region? Ken Baker and I want to build an office network that provides a full scope of design services to the market in the key communities we serve. Our strategy encompasses the whole region: beyond Abu Dhabi and Dubai, we are working in Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Syria—and pursuing work elsewhere in Africa. What do you foresee for the region’s architecture and planning? Dynamic, fast-growing areas like Abu Dhabi are pushing for new approaches,

redefining the building type to be more sustainable in balancing culture and environment. The region is willing to explore and experiment with design and technology, and to rethink how office buildings create communities and support the people who live and work there. Changing lifestyles, the environment, and work modes are driving innovation, but so is the confidence of the region’s leaders to shape their own future.

Ken Baker, co-regional managing principal, EMEA (left)

Dan Winey You’ve worked in East Asia and India for two decades. Why is it important to be global and local in these markets? Relevance! We’re working in the home markets of our East Asian and Indian clients, learning from each other. Our shared understanding has had a huge influence on the buildings and settings we design, not least because of the strong interest in design innovation. More than a few of our clients are becoming global themselves. They value our delivery platform, which helps them do just that. Why is sustainable design imperative to our work in Asia? We practice sustainably on all our projects. In China, there’s a strong focus on sustainable building and LEED

certification, but not always on the larger issues of sustainable urban and site planning, and the preservation of natural resources. Across the region, we work hard to advance a sustainability agenda, knowing that it will affect the quality of life there for generations to come. How is designing in Asia different from in the United States? Working in Asia changes your entire perspective on client relationships, expectations, project time schedules, design and delivery, construction standards, codes, and regulations. Despite this paradigm shift, it’s been the most interesting work I’ve done in my career. Do your Asian clients think of Gensler as an American firm? No, they see Gensler as a global firm with strong roots in every city where we have an office. Gensler Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo are led by Jerry Hung, Jun Xia, and Nachiko Yamamoto. Each of them combines a background in these cities with graduate school and work experience in the West. Our teams mix national and international professionals. Clients think of us as local because we are.

DESIGN + PERFORMANCE review

Gensler 2010 Annual Report

By incorporating knowledge gained through staff-driven research, implementing best practices in sustainable design, and integrating technology into project delivery, Gensler is at the forefront of the profession.

FIRM’S RESEARCH EFFORTS DRIVE CLIENT VALUE Gensler’s research efforts—with 26 projects spanning the firm’s practice areas—focus on issues that drive client value. Notably, the firm made new strides with its Workplace Performance Index (WPI) measurement and analysis tool for work settings, adding 20 projects and surpassing 41,000 employee respondents in the database. WPI surveys executed with clients in Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Tokyo now provide global reference points. New modules added to the

survey also capture valuable information on sustainability and mobility that will lead to more effective workplaces for our clients. Meanwhile, Gensler’s high-performance building initiative continues to examine new design drivers to inform the design of our clients’ buildings in the future. Practice leaders conducted the High Performance Building Challenge, an intense, multi-office effort to develop new realworld solutions, establish best practices for the firm, and demonstrate to clients that specific design decisions have tangible benefits.

41 000

A powerful sense of civic responsibility—rooted in the values of our staff and strongly supported by the Gensler culture—finds many outlets for giving back to the cities and regions where we live.

INTEGRATED DELIVERY ACCELERATES SCHEDULES AND LOWERS BUDGET RISKS. Gensler’s unique approach to integrated delivery benefits entire real estate portfolios, not just individual projects. Increasingly, our clients are looking to work with fewer partners—sometimes seeking singlesource accountability, but more often to cultivate collaborative partnering among architects, engineers, and builders. Our integrated teams focus on developing and applying

best practices to multiple projects over time. Such a portfolio-driven approach simultaneously accelerates delivery schedules and lowers budget risks. Gensler fully integrates our design expertise and state-of-the-art BIM technology to support collaboration in ways that create the highest value for our clients. Our project managers are skilled leaders of multidisciplinary teams distributed across a single continent or many. Teams working in Shanghai, Dallas, and London have

ready access to the same technology platform, the same collaborative tools, and the same BIM content worldwide. Our global approach leverages Gensler’s key strengths: our broad geographic reach, our unified delivery platform, our deep partner network, and our collaborative “one-firm firm” culture. The payoff: Clients, without having to grow their internal resources, can do more with less.

Engineering News-Record took note by ranking Gensler the top green architecture firm. We have designed 62 million square feet of LEED-registered or certified projects representing $16 billion in construction value. We also set new standards of building performance at the Milwaukee-area corporate headquarters of Johnson Controls, Inc.— the world’s largest concentration of LEED Platinum buildings. With its highperformance skin, enhanced daylighting, and the largest solar array in the state, the renovated campus is a leading model of sustainable development.

COMPRESSION CALCULATORS AID CLIENTS IN DOWNTURN Recent downsizing has left many clients questioning how to manage their excess real estate. At times like these, Gensler has much to offer.

#1 green ARCHITECTURE firm by Engineering News-Record GENSLER RAISES THE BAR WITH NEW LEED MILESTONES This was a year of celebration. With the opening of CityCenter in Las Vegas, Gensler marked the completion of the world’s largest LEED development. As Executive Architect, Gensler worked closely with MGM Resorts International/ Dubai World Joint Venture and its partners to achieve sustainability at CityCenter in every aspect: demolition, design, construction, and operations. “We achieved every design certification point we went for,” said Cindy Ortega, senior vice president at MGM Resorts.

Gensler’s ongoing partnership with the General Services Administration continues apace as we embark on two modernizations of federal buildings in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Houston, Texas. Coordinated with the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings, these projects integrate many practices already in place through Gensler’s own sustainability policy. This policy demonstrates the firm’s commitment to measurable standards that we apply to our people, our practices, and our clients’ projects. Johnson Controls, Inc., Glendale, Wisconsin, US

GENSLER SWEEPS TOP NATIONAL AWARDS Gensler’s long list of accolades grew a bit longer when it received Interior Design magazine’s prestigious Hall of Fame Award. Gensler’s Board of Directors accepted the award at a Waldorf-Astoria Hotel gala. Gensler is the first design firm to be selected for this honor, which typically goes to individuals. The firm also received high praise for its talent development initiatives, winning the 2009

savings and identifying options that warrant exploration. Our expertise in space utilization, design effectiveness, and tenant-improvement costs brings greater insight to the questions our clients are asking.

Workforce Management Optimas Award, the 2009 Chief Learning Officer Learning Team Silver Award, and the 2010–2013 AIA IDP Outstanding Firm Award. Gensler was one of only three firms selected nationally for recognition with the IDP award, the highest recognition given by the American Institute of Architects for excellence in earlycareer talent programming and support of licensure initiatives.

GENSLER LEADS DISCUSSIONS AT SAN FRANCISCO “DIALOGUES” The workplace is transforming, and Gensler continues to provide thought leadership among industry partners wanting to stay abreast of rapid change. Gensler San Francisco, in partnership with the San Francisco Planning + Urban Research Association (SPUR), hosted two “Dialogues with Gensler” events to confront issues impacting workplace and urban design. First was “The Office Unbound,” which featured a panel of Bay Area thinkers who challenged our audience of clients and industry professionals with views on the future workplace and technology. In May, Gensler sponsored “Open Source City.” Participants at this event— including Gensler practice leaders— speculated on the impact of environmental, economic, technological, and social trends on the workplace, and the Bay Area, in the next 20 years. These snapshots of 2030 provoked discussion among clients and colleagues on planning for, and responding to, changing dynamics in the future of work and the city.

FINANCE PARK CREATES OPPORTUNITIES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS Members of our SE Region team celebrated the completion of Junior Achievement Finance Park, the second finance park Gensler has designed for the organization. Located at Frost Middle School in Fairfax, VA, the stand-alone facility is a 20,000 sf financial learning and literacy center for Fairfax County middle school students. “Rarely do we have an opportunity to create a unique destination that provides a transformative and foundational experience for students,” said Gensler’s Jordan Goldstein. “Finance Park is a new building that uses architecture to tell a story about financial literacy, social responsibility, and educational strategies.” The collaborative design process yielded a unique vision for a building that is inviting on the outside and ripe with discovery on the inside, telling a story through innovative graphics, tactile materials, and unique architectural features.

NEXT GENERATION BOLSTERED BY GENSLER’S TALENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM We support our profession by encouraging architecture students who show great promise. This year, Gensler awarded its second annual Diversity Scholarship to Asia Dixon of the University of Tennessee, while George Washington University interior design student Stephen Ramos won the firm’s 2010 Brinkmann Scholarship competition. These two scholarship winners were joined across the firm by a class of interns representing more than 45 schools from around the world. Since 2000, Gensler has hosted more than 1,000 internships.

ART GENSLER HONORED FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Art Gensler received the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the San Francisco Business Times. Gensler, who at age 29 founded a practice that grew from three people to more than 2,300, told the newspaper the secret to the firm’s success is its client focus. “I can’t do great work unless I do have a great client,” he said. At the event honoring award winners, he also was recognized as the Most Admired CEO of a private company over 500 people.

JAMES, KELLEY TAPPED AS UP-AND-COMING LEADERS Not one, but two, Gensler architects were recipients of national awards from the American Institute of Architects. Darris James (Gensler New York) was honored with the 2010 AIA Associates Award, recognizing his work with organizations such as the Architecture, Construction, and Engineering Mentor Program and PENCIL, a group that builds relationships between business leaders and principals to inspire public school students. Christopher Kelley (Gensler DC) received the 2010 AIA Young Architects Award for his active national leadership and role as a spokesman for interns, Associate members, and young architects.

EMPLOYEES CONTRIBUTE TIME, TALENT, AND DOLLARS TO HAITI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that rocked Haiti in January, Gensler staff donated their design talent to the rebuilding effort and contributed $43,000 for humanitarian aid. The firm provided a $25,000 matching grant to support emergency relief on the island—totaling $68,000 in contributions. The design initiative involves a delegation from Gensler Los Angeles, which has teamed with Operation US to reconstruct the École Nationale Jacob Martin Henriquez in Jacmel, Haiti. The school will serve more than 700 students from grades K–7 who could not otherwise afford to attend. Team members traveled to Haiti, meeting teachers and students who are eagerly awaiting the new building. Drawings for the school were submitted in late July, with a goal of completing construction by the first anniversary of the quake.

FIRM LEADERSHIP

Gensler 2010 Annual Report

Message from the founder Despite the challenges of the economic downturn, the firm is on a strong financial footing. We’re debt-free and have been able to maintain investments in research, learning, and innovative delivery systems. Our financial strength is a valuable asset that enables us to continue building our firm. We’ve established locations in new markets like São Paulo and Abu Dhabi, and built new practices focused on sports and science and technology. We’ve recognized the extraordinary achievements of our staff by making important contributions to bonuses and retirement plans. These are all moves that help build our future to ensure that we continue to deliver unmatched value to our clients.

We started Gensler 45 years ago as a three-person office in San Francisco. We’ve come a long way since then. One important reason for our success is the attention we’ve always paid to sustaining the firm. Gensler in 2010 is financially strong and exceptionally well-led across its global offices and practices. Leadership is found throughout our firm—we’ve always known how to find and cultivate talent, not least by giving younger people responsibility and room to grow. Today, we provide that opportunity to our colleagues in Brazil, China, Costa Rica, India, Japan, Singapore, the UAE, and the UK, as well as those in the US. Gensler is a global firm that’s at home in 35 cities around the world. And that’s just the latest count! One of the best decisions we made early on was to form an employeeowned stock plan (ESOP). This let us transition from our founding generation and extend ownership to the entire Gensler community. Everyone here has a stake in the firm through our ESOP. All of us “think like owners,” which benefits our clients,

too. Since I’m actively involved in a number of our major projects, I know firsthand that along with their remarkable creativity, there’s an ethos of efficiency, productivity, costeffectiveness, and sustainability in our design studios. The dedication to our clients and their projects is amazing! Gensler in 2010 is making another transition. I’m stepping down from our board. I’ll always be the founder, and that’s more than enough for me. Walter Hunt, our vice-chair, and Jim Furr are also leaving the board. Walter has lent his vast skill as a leader to guide some of our largest projects and give advice and counsel to our practice areas and offices. Jim has made a powerhouse of our South Central region, moving us into new domestic and global markets. Both will now be free to focus totally on our clients and projects.

The collaborative leadership we put in place in this past decade will continue, shared between our Board and Executive Directors. It’s been wonderful to see the next generation take the reins and prove the wisdom of the organizational structure they spearheaded. Gensler is a large firm with a long reach, so teamwork is a necessity. Yet our leadership team also acts in concert, quickly and decisively. Our strength testifies to the validity of our model. I’m having too much fun to retire, but at this point in my career, I’d rather spend my time with our clients and in the studio. My colleagues can do the hard work of running the firm. It’s in good hands.
