Port of Cromarty Firth selected for offshore wind farm project The Port of Cromarty Firth has announced that its deepwater engineering port facility at Invergordon Service Base has been chosen to fulfil the next phase of one of the world’s largest offshore wind farms. Earlier in July, the Chinese heavy lift vessel, the Xia Zhi Yuan 6 arrived in to Port from Cartagena, Spain, carrying the first concrete gravity base caissons, for use in the Moray Offshore wind farm and the Inch Cape windfarm. The Port of Cromarty Firth has been selected as the closest port to the wind farms capable of providing both a sheltered, deepwater berth and onshore supply chain service necessary to see the project through to completion. The caissons are to be used in the construction of Met masts (offshore weather stations), one at Moray wind farm and one at Inchcape, near Edinburgh. Each caisson will be fitted with a large steel monopole (used to anchor the caisson to the sea bed) and a 90m tall steel a lattice tower, on to which meteorological equipment will be installed. The offshore weather monitoring stations will start providing essential data, which will inform key technical and engineering decisions for the wind farm. The weather stations will measure wind speed and direction in the area as well as temperature and air pressure. Bob Buskie, CEO for the Port of Cromarty Firth said “Talks began last year, with the unique suitability of Invergordon Service Base quickly being singled out from other competitors as the key port facility with all the right components to manage this project.

Having been involved with the initial test turbines that were established in the Beatrice offshore windfarm in 2010, it was a natural progression that the Port as a whole and Invergordon Service Base in particular would be a strong contender for this next phase.” The Port of Cromarty Firth recently embarked on a £25million expansion project, which will see it reclaim 9 acres from the sea and add a further deepwater berth to its existing port capabilities. The expansion will be completed by Summer 2015 and it is hoped that the Port will benefit from its proximity to the Moray Firth offshore wind farms.

News In Brief.... Freight rates are set to rise across all dry bulk carrier segments as the global economic recovery gains momentum, ending the sector’s most bearish run since the start of the economic crisis in 2008/2009, according to the latest edition of Dry Bulk Market Outlook issued by the UK-based ship management company Newport Shipping. Seaborne trade in bulk commodities is expected to pick up after almost two years of slow to moderate economic growth to almost 9% this year, after which it will ease off slightly to an annual growth rate of about 7%. Harald Lone, Newport Shipping’s Chairman and CEO, said: “The dry bulk markets, especially the Panamax, Supramax and Handy-size segments, have not been at the current low levels since the financial crisis in 2009. Strong supply growth, up 10.5% year-onyear for Panamax, combined with a decline in most of the major coal trades have pushed spot earnings for Panamax bulkers to about US$ 3,000 per day, well below operating costs.

Lloyd’s Register takes rules for Offshore Units step forward

“Our aim has been to take Class a step forward by providing an easy to use Rule set for our clients where content is straightforward to read, understand and apply,” said Richard Nott, VP of Operations for Lloyd’s Register’s Compliance Services business. “The challenge with any Rule set is to convey complex and technical requirements without extensive and unnecessary cross-referencing, ensuring that users are able to concentrate on the work in hand, rather than frequently having to refer to an extensive library of reference documentation. We have made improvements to better support industry in their decision making with a new Rules set that provides complete transparency for the design, construction and lifetime maintenance of offshore units, enabling these assets to be classed efficiently and resulting in improved safety.”

Industry News

Lloyd’s Register has launched its new Rules for Offshore Units in one single document following an in-depth consultation with industry. It signals a move by the world’s oldest classification and certification society, to modernise the way in which Rules and their guidance notes are presented to industry – and importantly how they are used by designers and operators of Offshore Units.

“We see this move to simplify and improve our Rules as another good example of the level of service industry expects from a world class safety and risk management provider such as Lloyd’s Register,” claimed Nott.

The new Rule set sees the amalgamation of Lloyd’s Register’s Rules for Mobile Offshore Units (MOU) and the Rules for Floating Offshore Installations at a Fixed Location (FOIFL). For the first time, all floating offshore asset types are included in one document. “In addition to the consolidation of the MOU and FOIFL Rules, we have introduced topics that are new to the Rule set and include new technical content on naval architecture, fire protection, high voltage electrical equipment, cryogenic spill and LNG offloading, among others.”

www.dockyard-mag.com

Lloyd’s Register continuously develops its Rules and guidelines through industry consultation and its annual meeting of the Offshore Technical Committee, which this year took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with representatives from offshore owners, operators, designers and shipyards from around the globe.

First boat built in Chatham Dockyard since closure 30 years ago Industry News

Back in the 1980’s it really came as a shock to the maritime community in Kent and around the country in general when, after 400 years in operation, Chatham Dockyard closed. The Navy pulled out and thousands of workers lost their jobs. But, from that dark day, the local community fought back – gradually, and today the future is much much brighter. There is the visitor centre which attracts thousands of people to the area, there is also the, now fully underway, £650m plan to transform the area back to a vibrant dock area with over 3,000 new jobs, a hotel, supermarket, conference centre and hundreds of homes. Now to really crown the resurrection of the area Ebbsfleet Marine Ltd are building the first boat in the docks since the devastation in the 80’s. Scheduled for completion this Autumn, Ebbsfleet Marine, part of the SH Group are building a new split hull multi-purpose work vessel to a very high specification. The vessel itself will be capable of performing a plethora of general workboat duties and will be 16.85 metres in length, with an overall beam of 7.07 metres. The breadth of each moulded hull is 3.47 metres with a depth of 1.5 metres. The full load draught will be 1.oo metres with a nominal draught of 0.75 metres. Maximum displacement is 90 tonnes with a deadweight of 40 tonnes. Total installed power for the boat will be Twin 169kW with a bollard pull of 5 tonnes.

Innovative new safety system The Survivor+ Personal Overboard Survival System is a new class of ‘wearable’ PFD (Personal Flotation Device) which uniquely incorporates both a SOLAS approved inflatable life jacket and a personal life raft into a single system worn as a compact vest for maximum readiness and survivability.

Don Blackman, Engineering Research Manager at manufacturers Cobham Life Support. “Freezing sea and air temperatures, disorientation, panic, and high sea states can overcome a victim quickly even when wearing a traditional life jacket or immersion suit. With Survivor+, victims can get out of the water and into the safety of their own automatically deployed life raft quickly and easily, staying protected from the elements until they are rescued.

“Survivor+ is designed to address key factors during vessel or platform evacuation and man overboard scenarios where death through drowning or hypothermia is all too common,” commented

New dust certification for Wolf Safety ATEX LED headtorches Wolf Safety, the world’s leading manufacturer of hazardous area portable and temporary lighting, enhances its ATEX LED Headtorches (HT-400 and HT-650) with further ATEX and IECEx certification for safe use in Zones 0, 1 and 2 for both potentially explosive gas, vapour and mist, and now Zones 20, 21 and 22 dust atmospheres.

www.dockyard-mag.com

With the new enhanced IIIB dust certification, the lightweight and high light output ATEX LED Headtorches now offer greater flexibility for hands free lighting, particularly where access is difficult, requiring climbing or crawling in potentially combustible dust environments found in the food, dairy, pharmaceutical,

20

distillery, grain/powder storage and polymer industries, where a IIIB dust certification permits and with maximum surface temperature of 125°C (HT-400) or 155°C (HT-650). Alex Jackson, Wolf Safety’s Managing Director comments “We are focused on continuously developing our products and expanding certification to maximise the reach of our already proven and trusted ATEX LED Headtorches for safe use in all explosive atmospheres. The new certification now gives end users the ability to use our products in a wide range of hazardous industrial dust applications, in addition to all group II industrial gas apparatus groups, for potentially explosive gases up to T4 temperature class, and group I M2 (HT-400) and M1 (HT-650) mining applications.” The HT-400, for use in Zones 1, 2, 21 and 22, is lightweight weighing only 90 grams including batteries, whilst the larger HT650 model, for use in Zones 0, 1, 2, 20, 21 and 22, weighs 180 grams. All are constructed from robust, highly durable, high impact thermoplastic materials, which are chemical resistant

and electrostatic non-hazardous, and fitted with a shatterproof polycarbonate lens. The tilt adjustment mechanism allows the user to angle the light and the bespoke optics deliver a broad spot beam suitable for close up hands free tasks, and all are designed for single-handed switching and water/dust tight to a minimum of IP66. With a ‘fitted for life’ high power LED light source, the HT-400 has up to 75 lumens of light output, with an optimum light duration of approximately 8.5 hours from a set of three AAA alkaline cells, and the HT-650 has a more powerful light output of up to 130 lumens with an optimum light duration of approximately 17 hours from a set of three AA alkaline cells. Wolf Safety is committed to developing and enhancing its portable and temporary lighting to offer the concept of protection for Zone 0, 1 and 2, wherever an explosive, gas, vapour, mist or dust is present, creating a potential risk of explosion.

Survitec Norway AS wins contract with the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue

As part of the deal, Redningsselskapet, which is Norway’s equivalent of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI), will replace all Viking liferafts on their vessels in favour of Survitec branded rafts. The parties will also cooperate on further developments of Sjøredningsskolen (the equivalent of the RNLI academy) owned by Redningsselskapet, where Survitec products will be used for training activities. The Norwegian organisation will also support the testing of Survitec Group products. Managing Director of Survitec Norway AS, Bente Storhaug Dahl said, “We are privileged by the partnership and it is a natural choice for us in Survitec Norway to support the impressive work enforced by Redningsselskapet. We are proud of being associated with such a reputable and professional organisation as we both have a common goal in preventing accidents

and by supplying products and services to save lives when such accidents occur. This shared philosophy provides an added dimension to this cooperation.”

Safety

Survitec Norway AS has entered into a close partnership with Redningsselskapet - the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue - a cooperation that includes a two-year sponsorship deal along with an agreement to supply selected safety equipment.

The agreement was reached at the same time as one of the new boats for teaching local children was named, Crewsaver - to symbolise both the collaboration and the commercial and leisure marine brand under the Survitec Group umbrella. “Through donating this new children’s boat, we hope to increase both children’s and adult’s awareness of the importance of safety at sea,” said Sales and Marketing Manager, Bjørn Nogva. “We have a long coastline inviting both children and adults to activities and valuable memories and we hope to

contribute to teaching them how to prevent fatal accidents. We simply cannot afford to lose even one.” Prior to the newly formed partnership, Survitec Norway had been a supplier to Redningsselskapet. As Survitec Group has grown, so too has the range of products and services available to support

customers and organisations such as Redningsselskapet in a much greater way.

The legal requirements regarding life rafts If you asked people to name the most notable historical events in the 20thCentury then you can be certain that most of them would mention the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Famously hailed as “unsinkable” by its creators, it clashed with an iceberg causing the deaths of more than 1500 people. This event sent shock waves across the world and since then there have been several rules developed to prevent such a disaster occurring again.

Now there must be enough life rafts to cater for all passengers and staff on board in the event of an emergency. For example, if there are only 4 people on board then there must be a life raft large enough to secure 4 people; equally if there are 300 people on board then there must be enough life rafts to safely carry them. The same rules apply for aeroplanes; an air craft must have enough life rafts to cater for everybody on board.

In 1912 the Titanic was only carrying 20 lifeboats, each of which could carry 47-65 people. As silly as this always seems to us in the modern day, it was actually completely legal at the time. The Board of Trade specified only that ships weighing over 10,000 tonnes had to carry 165 lifeboats (able to hold 990 individuals).

Life rafts are a collapsible alternative to a lifeboat; they contain a high pressure gas which inflates automatically in emergency. Commercial liferafts have to be checked annually be an approved and authorised LiferaftService Station. The inside of the life raft will be inspected; the equipment that it can contain is much less than a lifeboat. However, a life boat is completely open so only a crew member is required to check it periodically. SOLAS now require all merchant ships to have life rafts on each side of the ship. There must be enough to cater for all of the passengers.

Following the event, SOLAS (The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea), an international maritime safety treaty, ruled that “at no time of its voyage may a ship have a total number of persons than that for whom accommodation is provided in lifeboats”. This is the most fundamental legal requirement regarding life rafts today.

Fire and gas detection

The UK Continental Shelf has been a hive of Oil & Gas activity for almost 50 years and has a significant install base of mature assets. Over the years these assets have expanded, developed and/or been modified and so constant review of offshore F&G system installation is critical to ensure optimum levels of detection and protection are achieved. A Fire & Gas Mapping study is generally the first step and can assess the current layout of detection in use to determine if they remain in the most appropriate position to detect the threat, whether it be gas, flame, smoke, oil mist or any other relevant hazard.

Some of the larger installations in the UK North Sea can have F&G control systems made up of several thousand field devices ranging from the widely recognised smoke detector through to the detection of the highly toxic, flammable and corrosive gas, Hydrogen Sulfide. The wider control system into which the field devices feed will ultimately determine the action that results if any of the detectors goes into alarm mode. These actions can range from a simple alarm being triggered, fire pumps being started etc right the way through to a plant wide shut down of all system. Given these implications, it is critical that the initial system design and implementation is fit for purpose. As with most technology based solutions, regular skilled maintenance and as required upgrades are key to ensuring the efficiency and reliability of the overall system.

Servelec Controls have been supporting the Oil & Gas industry for in excess of 40 years and are specialists in the design, engineering, install, commissioning and maintenance of highly complex F&G Detection and Control systems.

Dredge Yard has announced that it plans to begin building a new compact and economic dredger in the United Arab Emirates, making it readily available to its customers. The ECO200 is designed completely by Dredge Yard engineers following the advice of several dredge companies that there is a need on the market for such a daily use, low cost, compact and economic dredger. The dredger will include several special features such as an underwater dredge pump placed on the front part of the ladder. This will allow the dredger to be able to handle higher dredge mixture and high volume of mixture flow. It will also be easier to extend the ladder what is standard suitable for dredger at six metre depth. Other features and benefits of the ECO200 include; ● The complete ECO200 is transportable by standard closed top 40 foot containers. All parts can fit inside the containers. This will allow the dredger to be transported from the building yard to the contractor saving on high transportation cost of non-containerized transport.

Dredge Yard will offer a strong support onsite assisting end users with their projects, training if required, maintenance and transport. Basic training will be provided onsite for one or two days by Dredge Yard’s experts. All spare parts will be available on stock ready for shipment at any time to prevent downtime of the dredger and delays in the project.

● Two spuds are provided at the end of each pontoon for the penetration of the soil and the swing of the dredger. Each spud is lifted by one hydraulic cylinder. The complete spud assembly together with its hydraulic cylinders is able to be tilted on its pontoon. This allows the dredger be towed easier and under pass low bridges and other obstacles.

Normally those types of dredges are bought for a specific project that is already taking place or starting with urgent need. This will require such a dredger to be available immediately and to be shipped within weeks or even days to the project. Dredge Yard plans to build the dredger on stock to be able to ship the dredger to any place in the world immediately at customers order.

● For the drive of all components being the dredge pump, cutter head, winches and spud cylinders, one hydraulic power pack is provide on the central platform. All components are hydraulically driven allowing the power to be distributed in a better way to give more power to the highest user. Also the ECO200 can be provided with hydraulic power unit driven by diesel engine or electric motor

“The ECO200 will be built in the UAE with Dredge Yard’s partners. One of the main reasons the dredger is going to be built in this region is that UAE serves as a hub in the region where such dredgers are used. There are daily flights to Africa, Europe and Asia. Beside the availability of shipping ports and shipping lines allowing easy, cost effective and fast transport of the dredger to any place in the world.” said Kabi Eisa, Dredge Yard’s Production Manager

www.dockyard-mag.com

● The ECO200 will be provided with cutter head with replaceable teeth what is unusual for this size of dredgers in the market. The replaceable cutter teeth will allow the dredger to change to different type of teeth according to the soil properties. This will increase productivity of the dredger and prevent wear on the cutter.

26

● The underwater dredge pump and the replaceable cutter head will give the ECO200 superior performances compare to other dredgers in the size. High performance will allow the dredger to have a short return of investment. ● Basic instruments controls are provided that allows easy maintenance and repair by the end user. The assembly and disassembly is easy and no special tools are required. Basically the complete assembly is three parts consist of two pontoons and one middle assembly included ladder, drive platform and cabin.

Duprojet dredging launch Dredging

Duprojet is a new hydrodynamic dredging unit which is solely available through Land and Water Services of Swadlincote,Derbyshire. Duprojet has been designed for land & Water by their partners Silt UK, with whom they have worked to develop the system over the last 12 months. This road transportable and versatile unit can carry out water injection dredging projects in those areas that are logistically challenging. The unit can be used on craft that can navigate inland waterway canals and rivers, as well as coastal waters, allowing it to be deployed across diverse projects. The Land and Water Duprojet technology has been used to successfully carry out projects on the River Tees, River Severn, Sharpness tidal basin and docks and the Gloucester & Sharpness canal. The most recent campaign with this technology was to dredge Gloucester docks in order to ensure that the tall ships could access the docks to carry out filming for a new movie. In order to facilitate this access by a channel had to be dredged to a depth in excess of 4m to allow the ships safe passage. The Duprojet has successfully carried out this work during amber drought conditions, which involves co-ordination between the water controllers and the crew on the Duprojet. The Duprojet has also moved sand bars along the Gloucester and Sharpness canal which have not been previously moved with other Hydrodynamic dredgers. Dense silt build up on the approach jetty at Sharpness basin, which Duprojet previously moved last year in order to provide greater navigational abilities, has also once again been moved. It was also successfully deployed to remove silt build up on the lock approach to the River Tees barrage. The Duprojet unit can be mounted from a hiab, or can be used on Land and Water’s bespoke craft in order to gain

manoeuvrability in difficult access areas, or in areas where the wash walls are in a fragile condition. It can work in shallow waters with a minimum water depth of 1.8m. Hydrodynamic dredging injects water into the bed to place the sediment into suspension. The suspended solids are then transported either by a naturally occurring hydraulic gradient, such as an ebbing tide or a hydraulic gradient is created on impounded basins by opening ground paddles to create a flow of water. The suspended solids then move naturally and redistribute along the waterway. Duprojet has been used in impounded basins, tidal estuaries and canalised river sections.

Carbon credits signals step change in adoption of energy efficient technologies As the shipping industry faces continued pressure to increase operational efficiencies, reduce rising fuel costs and improve sustainability, new innovative finance models that turn energy efficiency into bottom-line benefits are a timely and significant step forward for the industry. And it signals a new route to market previously stifled by a lack of finance, access to capital, and the incentive to invest. At the forefront of this drive to make eco-efficiency technology more accessible to the wider shipping industry is AkzoNobel’s Marine Coatings business International®. Specifically, the company spent over two years working in partnership with the Gold Standard Foundation to develop the first marine-based methodology for generating carbon credits within the shipping industry. The new methodology is aimed at ship owners and operators converting to International’s® range of premium eco-efficient foul release technology coatings, Intersleek® on all types of existing vessels currently coated with biocidal antifoulings. There is effectively money available, and on the table for the many owners and operators that are currently using Intersleek® technology to coat their vessels. In fact, based on the 100 existing ships already converted from a biocidal antifouling to Intersleek technology, there is an estimated $3.6m worth of carbon credits potentially available to ship owners and operators.

A baseline emission level is determined for the vessel prior to the application of Intersleek® with the same data source then used to determine the emission savings after the application of the technology. The carbon credits generated are directly related to reduced emissions as a result of the reduction in fuel consumption. Using a ‘results-based finance’ approach, carbon credits are awarded annually, based on vessel data that is collected, analysed and administered by International®; ship owners and operators do not have to invest any time, capital or resource in generating carbon credits. The data is then submitted to The Gold Standard Foundation for validation. To ensure rigour and transparency, the fuel savings that are generated are verified by independent UN accredited auditors. Once the carbon credits are issued to International® they can be sold at market price and the revenue shared with customers.

Besides selling them on the carbon market, carbon credits can be passed on to important stakeholders to offset their emissions (e.g. cargo owners) or can be used to voluntarily offset other sources of CO2 emissions. Another advantage is that the generation of carbon credits demonstrates sustainability leadership enhancing the brand and reputation of ship owners and operators, particularly among shippers and charterers – their customers – who are now placing a significant premium on increased sustainability within the shipping supply chain. In conjunction with the Gold Standard Foundation, International® spent more than two years developing the carbon credits methodology as part of its research into making eco-efficiency technologies more accessible for the wider shipping industry. The environmental credentials for Intersleek® technology have already been thoroughly established through an Eco-Efficiency Analysis conducted according to ISO14040 and ISO14044 and independently validated by the Swedish Environmental Research Institute.

www.dockyard-mag.com

Following the public launch of the programme in April 2014, several International® customers are already going through the process to unlock their carbon credits, with the first expected to be available at the start of 2015.

28

During such a time of significant change and investment in the future, the role that carbon credits can play in providing tangible returns that incentivise the international shipping community to invest in clean technology and sustainability should not be overlooked as a step closer towards a new era of sustainable thinking on clean technology investment for the industry.

On hardening the coating becomes flexible and impact resistant. The rubber increases adhesion and decreases permeability while maintaining high levels of hardness and abrasion resistance. In short, it has excellent adhesion to metal surfaces, it has excellent barrier properties to prevent corrosion, it is tremendously abrasion resistant and it has high surface tolerance and can be applied to damp substrates. The company have recently launched their latest antifouling product - Synergy, which has proved to be extremely consistent and reliable. SML Paints and Coatings - supplying the smaller ship/boatbuilding and refitting company Paints & Coatings

Often large manufacturers are keen to support and supply large orders to significant projects but the smaller single projects attract less effort. SML Paints and Coatings (previously Shepherd Marine Ltd) built, owned and maintained large residential houseboats on the Thames. “We always looked for a corrosion protection paint system that offered both a minimum of 10 year service intervals and that was available at an affordable price. When a friend recommended Jotun we tried it ourselves and we quickly became a committed customer. When an opportunity became available in 2004 to become a distributor we were keen to be involved as we already knew from our experience of applying it how good the range was” says Malcom Johnston, Owner. “We discovered that Jotun is well known amongst the large fleets but lesser so in the smaller companies”. “Brands that spend a lot of money in advertising and promoting to these companies could charge more for what we considered to be inferior products” SML is unique in only supplying paints and coatings from the one manufacturer. “We undertake never to try and encourage a customer buy any paint that won’t do the best job possible - in the end this will only reflect badly on us. We focus on the Jotun brand because we believe it to be the best quality paint but also the best value for money paint on the market today”. SML says that it sees no reason to stock a lesser product just because it is better known.

MGDuff Zinga, film-galvanising for steelwork Asset Management.

With costs rising and managers looking for longer term asset survival, an appreciation of the benefits of Zinga one pack cold applied galvanising system is a worthwhile study. A consideration of coatings as an engineering system rather than just ‘paint’ can save time, money and preserve asset value especially where other development is dependent on the steel infrastructure.

not delaminate when bent or impacted. Zinga with also ‘throw’ up to 15mm to protect bare steel when attrition damage scores through the coating.

Repair of existing HDG

Advantages.

Zinga is a long term cost effective alternative to conventional hot dip galvanizing or painting. Of course conventional steelwork preparation followed by blasting to a required profile is also necessary for the application of Zinga; however that’s where the similarity ends! Zinga’s speed into service is unrivalled. With a temperature tolerance of -12oC to +35oC and relative humidity up to 95%, coupled with a drying time of 10 minutes in the summer months, preparation, application and into service use are all possible in the same day!

Where end of life projections exceed 15 years, thus outside of the remit of most conventional coatings, Zinga will come into its own as simple jet washing is all that is needed for Zinga to be re-loaded, significantly reducing through-life costs. No further blasting is necessary.

www.dockyard-mag.com

Zinga has many advantages over other coatings; electro chemically bonding with the metal, it can be welded through without porosity, and produces significantly lower amounts of toxic fumes compared with HDG. Application to damp surfaces with no visible sheen can be achieved and post application it will

32

Where hot-dip galvanising needs to be repaired, replaced or built-up in thickness, the surface just needs a sweep-blast at low pressure to roughen the surface, then Zinga can be applied. Treatment by brush, roller or spray gives the maintenance team complete flexibility, and coupled with the virtual ‘all-weather’ benefits above reduces down-time to a minimum. Zinga has been used on bridges, sub-sea pipe-lines, oil platforms, railway structures, water tanks, electricity pylons, London Underground, Paris Metro, ships, nuclear submarines, nuclear power stations, telecom towers and many other structures.

Operators should leverage eco efficient technology to remain profitable in ECA zones Paints & Coatings

While the maritime industry has rightly recognised the environmental benefits of the 2015 Emission Control Area’s (ECA), the 0.1% sulphur limit imposed on vessels by the legislation adds to the catalogue of recent cost hikes for bunker bill payers. For those contending with ECA’s a fresh squeeze on profit margins is imminent; and will be felt in addition to costs triggered by sustained high bunker prices. To achieve compliance for example, vessels operating within 200 nautical miles of the U.S. and Canada coastline have two options. Either, switch to a compliant fuel upon entrance to the ECA zone and pay a premium price for the privilege. Alternatively, vessels can continue to operate on comparatively cheaper high sulphur fuel oil (HSFO) and wash the sulphur out with scrubbers, which requires significant upfront investment and installation costs. Arguably there is also a third option, which is to reposition vessels outside the ECA to avoid paying higher costs. A leading cruise operator initially explored this option, but has since revised its strategy in favour of scrubber installation. As the debate on preferable routes to compliance continues, it’s clear that controlling costs while meeting environmental legislation will be a top priority from 2015 onwards. According to another leading operator, compliance with the ECA will cost around $250m per year for 650,000 tonnes of fuel with 0.1% sulphur content, equivalent to 7% of all fuel purchased by the company. Amid these circumstances, ship operators should think laterally about the options available to them. While paying a higher cost for ECA compliant fuel such as marine gas oil (MGO) or applicable marine diesel oil (MDO) may be unavoidable, there are technologies available that can reduce overall fuel consumption by targeting and eradicating energy inefficiencies. The resultant savings can be used to offset the cost of ECA compliance. One example is advanced hull coatings, which can reduce bunker bills by safeguarding underwater hulls against marine fouling, including slime. An age-old problem to the shipping industry, slime is a complex, varied and dynamic organism that begins to colonise surfaces as soon as they enter the water, and has been proven to have an adverse effect on the efficiency of all vessel types – to the tune of 44 million extra tonnes of bunker fuel, $28.6 billion in additional fuel costs and an extra 134 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum across the industry.

Ahead of the introduction of the 2015 ECA, pooling resources to achieve compliance should rightly take priority. However vessel operators should maintain an overarching long-term strategy that equips them with the right technology to maintain profitable operations. When the global sulphur limit drops from 3.5% to 0.5% in 2020, no commercial operators will be immune from the cost of environmental compliance. The economic importance of underwater hull condition as a means of combating sustained high bunker prices is indisputable and those with the ability to leverage it to cut their operating costs will maintain a competitive advantage in the decarbonised shipping industry.

www.dockyard-mag.com

International® has been targeting the issue since long before the introduction of the first ECA area. Most recently, this has resulted in the development of Intersleek®1100SR, the shipping industry’s first biocide free, fluoropolymer technology that influences and resists the adhesion
 and settlement of organisms that
make up slime colonisation. The technology has been proven to increase vessel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions

and associated fuel costs by an average of 9%. Importantly, all those operating in ECA areas can benefit, because the coating can be applied to any commercial vessel, even those slow or ultra slow steaming. On top of fuel savings and in comparison to typical antifouling systems, Intersleek®1100SR can contribute to the wider profitability of the business by generating a 40% reduction in paint volume and 60% reduction in VOC emissions for first time application. At future dockings it can reduce paint by around 75%, VOC emissions by over 80% and waste packaging by over 60%.

High protection Amercoat 235 and Amercoat 450H gloss Fugro GeoServices, Inc. was founded in 1999 as a division of Fugro USA, part of Fugro N.V., a multi- national group of consulting engineers who supply advice, technical applications and drilling opera- tions worldwide. In 2007, Fugro awarded to BOCONCO Incorporated the building of a new survey vessel, to be named the “Fugro Enterprise.” This vessel is initially conducting three deepwater surveys in the Gulf of Mexico and carries a suite of high-resolution geophysical survey equipment, including Echo Surveyor II, a Hugin 3000 Autonomous Underwater Vehicle, as the primary system.

The freeboard received two coats of Amercoat 235, and was then topcoated with Amercoat 450H gloss aliphatic polyurethane. These systems will provide the vessel with outstanding weather and antifouling protection.

First founded in 1997, BOCONCO’s offices and shipyard were destroyed by hurricane Katrina in August of 2005 but were completely rebuilt, and the yard delivered its first boat since then in January of 2007. Also in 2007, BOCONCO built the Fugro Enterprise, which was launched on June 1, 2007. The carbon steel vessel’s underwater hull was protected with two coats each of Amercoat 235 multi- purpose epoxy and ABC3 high-performance, tin-free, self-polishing antifouling.

Coatings add finishing touches to HMS Queen Elizabeth The HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier, the pride of the Royal Navy, received its finishing touches of coating on many of the internal areas from world-leading manufacturer Sherwin-Williams. The Queen officially named the 920-ft long HMS Queen Elizabeth - the largest warship ever built for the Royal Navy - by breaking a bottle of whisky on her bow at Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland. As part of the final stages of the development of the carrier, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) provided the protection for a range of areas including the machinery spaces and internal wet spaces.

The coating supplied was a two-coat system using a primer of Metagard L674 epoxy glass flake or Epigrip C425V2 epoxy zinc phosphate. For wet areas, a water-based epoxy Biogard M630V2 finish coat was used and for internal dry compartments, a finish coat of water-based Envirogard M770 was applied. For machinery spaces, the finish coat used was Epigrip M922 epoxy glass flake. When HMS Queen Elizabeth is finished she will hold a crew of 680 and be able to house a fleet of up to 40 jets and helicopters, creating what admirals say is a piece of British technology that can be deployed around the globe.

www.dockyard-mag.com

Aircraft Carrier Alliance managing director Ian Booth, the man overseeing the construction of the ship, said: “This is a historic occasion for our country and a proud moment for more than 10,000 people across the UK who have worked together to deliver HMS Queen Elizabeth.

34

“This is an engineering challenge of unprecedented scale and complexity for UK shipbuilding and I want to congratulate everyone involved in making today possible.” It was the first time in more than 15 years that the Queen has christened a Royal Navy warship, and comes five years after the first metal was cut.

ABLE HUMBER PORT (819 HA – 2,024 ACRES – 3.16 Sq Miles)

At 320 ha, it will be more than 60% larger than Europe’s next biggest facility at Bremerhaven, Germany (200 ha) and will provide 1,389 of quay purpose to a depth of 18.1 metres at MHWS and is specifically designed to support the demands and specific requirements of the emerging renewables sector. UKTI - OCTOBER 2010 MEP-C1

The Able Marine Energy Park (AMEP), on the south bank of the Humber will be the largest Offshore Wind Park in Europe and is the UK’s jewel in the crown for Offshore Wind development.

The plans to build the Energy Park were given the go-ahead last December, but are now likely to be delayed after Parliament agreed to review objections lodged by rival port operator ABP Ports.

ABP’s objection revolves around their conflicting proposals for a jetty on the same site and as Able Marine’s plans include a compulsory purchase of a triangle of land currently owned by ABP, the delays could prove to be lengthy. Special hearings in front of a Parliamentary Committee will now take place and both ABP and Able Marine are obviously keen that swift progress is made and the costly delay kept to the minimum.

SSCS frond mats for the offshore wind sector

One notable project which was undertaken a few years ago was the Arklow Bank Offshore Windfarm for which SSCS provided solutions for scour protection of the Met Mast at the early stages in the project, followed by additional works for scour remediation around two of the turbine foundation piles following the unsuccessful deployment of rock armour. Arklow Bank is a shallow water sandbank located 10 km off the east coast of Ireland in approx: 3mwd. It is exposed to strong currents, frequently exceeding 2m/s, breaking waves and has a dynamic sand/gravel seabed. Type25 SSCS Frond Mats were installed around the 1.0 metre diameter Met Mast Pile Foundation standing in 5mwd 3 years following its installation to prevent scour and provide permanent scour protection. The post installation survey showed the successful application and effectiveness of the Mats with a build-up of sediment providing a stable protective sand bank such that the buoyant fronds 1.25metres in length were completely buried and no longer visible.

Specially designed SSCS Frond Mats were later installed around two of the 6.3 metre diameter Turbine Pile Foundations and along associated power cables to rectify scour and provide permanent protection following the failure of rock armour.

Marine Renewables & Windfarms

SSCS has been successfully operating for 30 years this year within the offshore oil and gas industry worldwide. For the past 10 years they have also been active in the offshore wind sector providing expertise and services for the prevention and rectification of scour and freespans for offshore assets such as turbine foundations, subsea cables and met masts.

Rock armour, installed shortly after pile installation to provide scour protection, was found during post installation surveys nine months after installation to have dissipated and to have sunk below the natural seabed level exposing the pile and cables and creating scour to a depth of 4 metres and extending to approximately 20 metres from the pile edge. The SSCS Frond Mats were installed between and around the few remaining rocks to rectify this scour, reinstate the seabed soils and provide long term protection. The below still photograph taken from the post installation survey video shows the successful application and effectiveness of the Mats with a build-up of sedimentation providing a stable protective sand bank. The 2011 Completion Report of the remedial works provided by GE Energy, and prepared by Island Maritime Ltd indicated ongoing successful performance of the SSCS Frond Mats: “Initial observations of the effect of ... Frond Mattress installation are positive.” “Frond Mattresses have already begun to bury as currents are slowed by the action of the fronds and sand in suspension is encouraged to deposit on the mattresses.” “Immediate observations of the effects of Frond Mattresses around WTG 4 & WTG 5 are very positive”

TAG Energy Solutions has achieved a significant landmark in its project to produce foundations for the Humber Gateway offshore wind farm. North East England-based TAG Energy Solutions has undertaken the load out and sailaway of four 60-metre long, 650 tonne monopile foundations and four transition pieces, which are destined for the wind farm, which is situated 8km off the Yorkshire Coast close to the mouth of the Humber Estuary. The foundations are part of a project to deliver 16 monopiles and transition pieces for the Humber Gateway development. The remaining 12 foundations will sailaway from TAG Energy Solutions’ 42-acre site on the River Tees before the end of August. The first set of monopiles was loaded onto a barge by Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) with the transition pieces lifted by crane onto the barge at TAG Energy Solutions’ wet dock facility. The barge was then taken down the River Tees were it met the MPI Discovery vessel before sailaway to the wind farm development. The Humber Gateway will consist of a 73-turbine array that will generate up to 219MW of electricity, which is enough energy to power 170,000 homes. With the award of this project, TAG Energy Solutions became the first UK manufacturer to secure a substantial monopile and transition piece project for a wind farm in British waters. As the UK’s premier full service offshore wind serial foundation manufacturer, TAG Energy Solutions has made considerable investments to enable it to deliver projects of this nature.

CTruk complete their third 20m Swath CTruk’s third 20m SWATH (small waterplane area twin hull) is now completed and the company have been organising demos of this innovative advanced FRP composite vessel before her naming and imminent contract with leading offshore solutions provider CWind. CTruk’s second SWATH, CWind Endurance, has been working since delivery as a crew transfer vessel supporting cable pull in work on Westermost Rough offshore wind farm (as part of CWind’a charter fleet).

Superior comfort & push-on ability with the third SWATH With this latest SWATH CTruk has introduced mixed-flow stainless-steel Rolls-Royce waterjets for a targeted 25% increased bollard pull. Coupled with the RR jets’ efficiencies it is envisaged that the optimised hull form will also give a boost of around 10% to the already notable fuel efficiency of these composite craft as well as increased speed.

www.ctruk.com

Part-owner and skipper Stuart Richardson has received very positive feedback on her crew transfer capability: “We have been operating the SWATH on this 24-hour contract since June this year and are seriously impressed. Even in rough seas Endurance gives a smooth ride and is not moving on the turbine ladder. Passengers are commenting that they’ve not seen anything like it before. When pushing-on to the turbine this boat has the capabilities of a larger vessel but the manoeuvrability of a smaller one with the Rolls-Royce waterjets.”

UK renewables training Falck Safety Services have become the country’s only industrial training facility to deliver the full set of Global Wind Organisation and RenewableUK training modules from a single site.

www.dockyard-mag.com

The company, which has training centres across the world has received full accresitation to offer a comprehensive range of renewables safety training, for the ever expanding wind turbine sector, from its Teeside base. Colin Leyden, Falck managing director commented: “We are seeing increasing demand for renewables training as the sector continues to grow and become an increasingly attractive employment opportunity across the UK, so it is great to receive the full accreditations and offer dual certification to delegates. Delegates can complete the accreditation in just seven days, or if preferred, the modules can be undertaken one at a time. Falck can also host the training courses at clients’ bases across the UK if required.”

Mojo Maritime to develop low motion floating platform Mojo Maritime Ltd announced earlier this year that they had secured funding to develop, build and test their low motion floating platform for offshore LiDAR measurements (LiDAR is an advanced technology deployed in support of offshore wind energy farms). Concept development and tank testing of the platform performed during 2013 has resulted in a solid design, capable of withstanding the most challenging offshore conditions. The platform is designed as a semisubmersible with adjustable draft ballast, thereby simplifying installation compared with spar-buoy designs, whilst improving low-motion characteristics. Deployment of the platform and motion testing is planned at the Falmouth Bay test site (FABTest) this autumn. Allowing for possible design optimisations, the platform would be redeployed early 2015 to carry out LiDAR validation against a fixed met mast.

£328,000 of European support from the ERDF-grant for business investment (GBI) scheme based on a total project value of £728,000.

As offshore wind farms move further offshore, meteorological (met) masts required to measure the potential of a site’s resources become increasingly expensive to design, build and install,

thereby driving up total project costs and increasing early project risk. Floating platforms fitted with Lidar measurement equipment offer significant cost reductions in terms of capital and operational expenditure. Being secured by moorings rather than seabed fixings, the platform has minimal environmental impact and can be relocated using inexpensive assets. For further information on the Low Motion Platform or Mojo Maritime, please contact Matt Hodson or Bart Vroon on: 01326 218218 The Low Motion Floating Platform project is part financed by the Grant for Business Investment European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007 to 2013. This was the second offshore wind farm in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, and was the world’s first to be located at such a distance from the coast as it is actually outside of the 12-mile limit. The construction of the project started back in mid-2006, by installing cables to all windmill via the J-Tube arrangement, the burial of cables between windmills and the installation of main landfall cables, but obviously a constant maintenance schedule is also required.

PME Group helping to make MAN Engines to become customer choice in wind farm support vessels The PME Group is the longest serving MAN Nuremberg Marine Main Dealer [UK] and is recognised as having twenty years service gaining a wealth of knowledge and experience of the MAN product, that has kept it at the forefront of customer service. In the early days, the majority of MAN engines were supplied to the pleasure market and to the two major motor yacht builders Sunseeker International and Princess Yachts with PME in a supportive role to both companies. MAN entered the wind farm market in 2009, with the D2842 LE410 1100hp engines being chosen by South boats for two 20m wind farm support vessels for operators MPI ‘Don Quixote’ and Turbine Transfer ‘Cemaes Bay’ both of which are still going strong today. 2011 saw the launch by MAN of a completely new commercial range of V8 and V12 engines which has enabled MAN to offer a more coordinated power spectrum, with a light duty engine range [730 – 1800hp] a medium duty range [400 -1400hp] and a heavy-duty range [258 -900hp]. Almost immediately, interest came from one of the UK’s leading wind farm support

vessel builder’s Alicat Workboats, after seeing the engine on display in America and on their return contacting PME Group very shortly afterwards. There followed an order for the new D2862 LE432 1200hp engine for three new Gardline boats, with the engines being supplied directly by MAN. PME Group were heavily

involved in the support [commissioning & service] enabling PME to gain a better understanding of the complex operating parameters and customers’ requirements of this new type of vessel, due to their reliability and invaluable data retrieved during the ongoing servicing process.

PME Group has been working closely with both builder and operators such as MPI, Gardline, North Sea Service [EON] to name but a few by giving them support and aftercare service second to none. This has proved to be a winning combination for all concerned. Today and moving forward PME Group is showing its commitment to both MAN

and its customers by its investment in new larger premises to consist of modern engineering workshops and be-spoke training facilities to support wind farm customers. This will keep PME Group at

the forefront of all market sectors as true leaders of the industry.

Marine Renewables & Windfarms

Since then the MAN market share and dealer network has steadily grown with MAN powered boats being in service with the majority of UK and European operators. As a consequence of them being highly reliable, customers and builders are making MAN their first choice. 2013 and 2014 has seen a number of new MAN powered vessels launched, most recently the 24m EON ‘Solway Challenger’ fitted with D2862 LE463 1400hp.engines commissioned by PME.

Mermaid Kohler range to be launched Industry Round-up & New Technologies

UK mariniser, Mermaid Marine is to launch a new range of diesel engines, the Mermaid Kohler. The partnership between UK diesel engine mariniser Mermaid Marine and Kohler expands Mermaid Marine’s offering to smaller inboard engines with the company now able to supply engines from 31kW to 376kW. It has come about through Mermaid Marine’s parent company, Power Torque’s work with JCB which has partnered with Kohler’s Global Power Group to use the Italian manufactured engines in several of its compact machine lines in what the company terms the next stage of its engine strategy. “The decision to partner with Kohler to develop engines for JCB compact machines was driven by the synergy in the technologies used by JCB and Kohler to achieve stringent emissions legislation,” explained Alan Tolley, JCB’s director of engine programmes. The Mermaid Kohler mechanical engine is marinised by Mermaid Marine and meets the next stage of emissions targets without the need for a diesel particulate filter. The engines feature cylinder block with bed plate architecture, a 4-valve cylinder head, gear driven valve train and optimised direct injection (DI) fuel system. “The new Kohler direct injection engine provides an excellent platform for a commercial marine engine with its modern, rugged and compact design,” said Mermaid Marine sales executive Julian Osborne. ““The new engines have good power and torque characteristics with class leading fuel consumption figures – up

to 15% better than a similar output engine equipped with lower injection pressures with a DPF. They can also feature a heavy duty Power Take Off for driving auxiliary hydraulics.” The engines utilise direct injection technology and are naturally aspirated with mechanical governing. “High-performance specifications for both torque and power density makes this engine the new reference for higher displacement engines,” added Mr Osborne. The range currently comprises two engines, the KDI 1903M three cylinder, 42hp / 31kW and the KDI 2504M four cylinder 49hp / 36kW with further developments planned in terms of options and power ratings.

New 5 year contract for Silvers Marine Historic Argyll and Bute boatyard Silvers Marine has won a new five-year contract with Babcock International. The deal will see Silvers Boatyard servicing and maintaining a fleet of vessels for the Ministry of Defence. The yard continues to be a respected provider of all types of repair and maintenance to leisure craft, work that has been carried out on the premises for more than 100 years. In April Silvers and its boatyard was bought by GSS (Plant) Ltd who operate a fleet of multi role vessels and anchor handling tugs working internationally.

Silvers general manager Andrew Malcolm said this week: “I have been working on this contract since December last year as part of the tendering process - after many discussions and site visits this comes as excellent news. “We have the skills at Silvers but with added security

and investment from our new owners GSS we offer a fantastic facility that has been recognised nationally and undoubtedly helped secure this deal.”

MAN Turbochargers power world’s first ME-GI and 28/32 Dual-Fuel Engines

The recent delivery of the world’s first dual-fuel, low-speed ME-GI engine from Doosan Engine to the American National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) set a new, historical milestone in engine technology. The 8L70ME-C8.2GI main engine is aspirated by 2 × TCA66 turbochargers and will power a 3,100teu container ship ordered by TOTE, the American marine transportation company. Furthermore, the ship will receive 3 × 9L28/32DF auxiliary engines, each featuring a single TCR18 turbocharger. A second, identical vessel is currently under construction.

46

All Silvers staff were re-employed and GSS has now moved its head office and associated staff from nearby Rhu Marina. The owners of GSS have undertaken an intensive programme of improvement of facilities and staff training at the yard as well as providing new employment opportunities in a rural area of high unemployment in the 16 - 24 age group.

chosen the most environmentally friendly engine technology available but also the most flexible power solution in that both the ME-GI and 28/32DF engines can run on HFO or gas. Gas operation means a significant reduction in CO2, NOx, particulate matter and SOx emissions – both engines are characterised by having no methane slip. TOTE’s containership is slated to be the first gas-powered containership in the world and will lead the way for additional investments in infrastructure for liquefied natural gas. Dirk Balthasar, Head of Sales and Promotion – Turbocharger Business Unit – MAN Diesel & Turbo, said: “Playing a crucial role for a leading developer and builder of two-and four-stroke, low- and medium-speed engines as it does, the Turbocharger Business Unit has a deep

understanding of all the core technologies of large engines and the way they interact with turbochargers. The result is world- and market-leading turbocharger technology that easily keeps pace with all innovations and new developments within large diesel technology.” “MAN’s engines and turbochargers will allow TOTE to maintain its commitment resourcefulness, reliability, and responsiveness while reducing our impact on the environment” noted Anthony

Chiarello, President and CEO of TOTE. “We are excited to be the world’s first LNGpowered containership and the first to use MAN’s ME-GI engine.” With the TCA66 and TCR18 turbochargers, TOTE has chosen proven products that integrate well with the latest engine technology and match operator’s requirements for long service intervals and straightforward maintenance. To this end, MAN Diesel & Turbo recently announced that not only had it extended the inspection intervals of its TCA turbochargers but, in fact, had totally omitted the previously necessary bearing inspection between major overhauls. The company also stated that maintenance on its turbochargers can be carried out by the operator’s own crew

– after appropriate training – or by MAN PrimeServ, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s global service organisation. “It’s one of our unique selling points: having chosen an all-MAN package, including main engine, auxiliary engines and turbochargers, TOTE can now enjoy the additional benefit of MAN PrimeServ’s one-stop service for engines and turbochargers”, Dirk Balthasar concluded.

Propellers: How smooth is smooth?

The system, known as ScaleGuard, is activated for 3-4 minutes each hour. When in operation, the microscopic bubbles generated via the modules flow inside the hot evaporator surfaces and implode when they get in contact with salt and minerals. The deposits are flushed out of the generator via the brine. A feature of the system, said to be uninque, is its patented conical shaped titanium plates. The shape makes is possible for the seawater to evaporate but also for the ultrasonics to function optimally. Additionally, Mr Willum has replaced practically all stainless steel and metal with polymers, i.e. PP H-α, PVC, PA, thereby eliminating all corrosion issues. Only components with stresses above 30 MPa (tie rods and flange bolts) are stainless steel. “It has also been very important to introduce a design which is easy for engine room crew to maintain,” says Mr Willum. “An on-going problem for the crew is very often that the titanium plates leak after cleaning and re-assembly. We have eliminated that by orientating the plates horizontally and not vertically. The horizontal orientation makes it much easier to assemble the plate/gasket ensuring no leakages.” The new generator can be installed when a ship is laying alongside on a quay, and does not require a special docking period as the unit is of a light weight and modularised design. It is claimed to be installed within 48 hours. FCI Watermakers in the US has redesigned and upgraded it Max-Q+ and Max-Q+ w/APC fresh water generators. The upgraded series features outputs ranging from 600 to 1800 gallons (2,250 to 6,800 litres) per day and includes a completely redesigned V4 control interface. The interface to the V4 control is now a 5.7in (14.5cm) high resolution and full colour touchscreen display.

Each ship will be fitted with three RO plants, each capable of producing 800 m³/day of desalinated fresh water from seawater. The RO plants will supply fresh water to the 4,200 passengers on board. The plants are skid-mounted and will be installed during the construction of each ship. The ship will effectively be built around the plants. Each plant comprises automated suction/discharge valves, feed/ backwash pump, two sand filters in parallel, anti-scalant dosing, cartridge filtration, high pressure pumps, RO stack and automatic permeate dump system. The electrical control panel provides operator interface, annunciates all alarm conditions and safety trips, and controls the automatic backwash operation of the sand filters. Salt Separation Services says that this contract is its largest single export order to date, and follows on from export success in the offshore oil and gas market. SLCE of France has added a range of shipping offshore, and naval references recently with systems ranging from 20 to 100 m³/day. The company has also its range to 1,500 m³/day with a system that features energy recovery. The range is fully automated and is available with skid mounting.

www.hydrofoss.dk

www.dockyard-mag.com

When the Max-Q+ w/APC is chosen, the system becomes fully automated. It can be set up to start running based on level controls, time of day or can be started manually. The Max-Q+ w/ APC will start, adjust the pressure and start making water without any further adjustment needed. With the APC option, media filter backwashing can be automated. When backwashing is required, the MaxQ+ w/APC will stop the generator, automatically position all valves for backwashing, backwash and reposition the valves and then restart.

“We also use duplex or super duplex stainless steel piping and valves for improved corrosion resistance in seawater applications,” says Daniel Shackleton, director of Salt Separation Services. “The innovative solution provided to Meyer Werft includes two pass RO technology to produce RO permeate to a very high specification as well as isobaric energy recovery technology, dramatically reducing the power requirements of the RO plants.”

Industry Round-up & New Technologies

Hydrofoss of Denmark has developed a fresh water generator that doesn’t require anti-scaling chemicals during operation. These chemicals prevent salt and minerals from attaching on the hot evaporator surfaces inside the generator. “We have managed to solve the scaling problem via a combination of special designed titanium evaporator plates and ultrasonic modules mounted close to the evaporator module,” says company owner Mads Willum.

Regulations entitled ‘Look-out’ reads, ‘every vessel shall at all times maintain a proper look-out by sight and hearing as well as

Therefore, in sunny and bright conditions mariners need to make sure that the sun
