President’s Message

W

e have seen our dog world ramping up with an array of conformation shows and dog sports events happening in Queensland and inter-state. As I type this message this is the week for the Rottweiler National on our grounds. I have no doubt that this will be a successful event and I wish all the participants and organisers well. Great to see both conformation and dog sports events catered for. We are entering those spectacular winter months here in Queensland and let’s hope that some long sunny days with crisp nights continue. The Durack grounds look an absolute picture and that is the result of much hard work by our DQ grounds staff and volunteers. A big thank you to them and also to our Grounds Committee members.

Final finishing touches are happening with our lure coursing field. Do have a look at the field on the right as you drive in. I cannot believe how the levelling and use of quality fill has expanded the look and utility of this land. A big thank you to Craig Drury and to the clubs and Grounds Committee for the hard work in making that happen.

Mandatory DNA Testing At the Board Meeting on 27th June, the Board discussed at length the need for Dogs Queensland to continue to be the gold standard in the breeding of pure bred dogs. As a further step, the Board is keen to introduce a measure whereby any litter whelped on 1st January 2023 or after would require DNA Profile for Parentage – i.e. DNA Profiles of the Sire, the Dam and all puppies. So this would be mandatory for both Main and Limited Register dogs.

If any Member wishes to provide a submission on this proposed process change they are invited to do so and have their submission tabled at the July Board Meeting when the matter will be further considered. Submissions would need to be lodged no later than COB 20th July 2022.

The Ekka August brings the Ekka with a bonus second dog

show this year. Great to see this happening in 2022 after cancellations with Covid. Make sure you get those entries in! Entries close at 5pm on Friday 8 July 2022 with entries being $30 for RNA members and $35 for non-RNA members. There is ambit to lodge a late entry after 5pm on Friday 8 July 2022 for a week up to Friday 15 July 2022 but the cost of an entry during that period is $75. So don’t delay with those entries! Dogs Queensland is going to have a well-located presence with good traffic flow at the Ekka close to the rings and spectator stand. Barbara in the office has done a wonderful job sourcing great things for the Dogs Queensland Ekka bags. We will be looking for volunteers shortly both for an Ekka bag working bee at Durack and also for the DQ stand at the Ekka. So, look out for updates in Paw Prints.

Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers Meeting on Monday 11 July 2022 at 7pm This annual meeting will be held at the Clubhouse, and we are looking at zoom being available for our regional people and those who would like to avoid the drive to Durack. Remember, this is for the executive of all our affiliated clubs so that includes our dog sports clubs as well as our All-Breeds Clubs and Specialty Breed Clubs. Those club representatives who would like to participate in this meeting should contact the office. This meeting is a great forum to raise issues for clubs and also to share information about productive initiatives.

equestrian facility. I also visited the smaller but very effective open sided undercover arena at Morayfield a few years back. Most recently I drove to Kilkivan for one day of the well-run Gympie Kennel Club show weekend also held in an equestrian facility. That was a week marked by torrential rain and the use of that undercover facility saved the show weekend. A number of people asked me when we were going to build such a useful facility at Durack. I think that this has been something on the back burner for quite a while. Even without the wet, an undercover facility would be so welcome in our subtropical climate. As I see it, it could be built in stages with the sides left open but the roof giving protection from the sun and elements. Others may have a different view, but I think it could be sited on the other side of the internal road where rings 11 to 16 are located. In any event, I would like to see a dynamic committee formed to look at the following-: • Establishing a fundraising initiative

Dogs Queensland has two of its own directors on the board of our national body. Currently that is Mrs Barb Murfet and I. We have been having three meetings a year and with Covid that has been by Zoom. Most recently we had a Zoom meeting on Saturday 18 June 2022. The minutes from that meeting will issue soon and I will give members an update on important outcomes from that meeting. It was agreed that the next meeting on 15 and 16 October 2022 will be face to face and that it will be held in Sydney with the State and Territory administrators meeting on the Friday 14 October 2022.

• Investigating possible government and related grants

It is needless to present an in-depth explanation of the importance of dog welfare related matters and their connection to our activities. These documents—and the upcoming ones—target the everyday dog keeper, presenting complex materials related to responsible dog keeping to prevent dog welfare matters and better understand the importance of registered breeding. The documents are published on the FCI website (http://www.fci.be/en/Welfare-well-being-andprotection-for-pedigree-dogs-worldwide-1291. html) and promoted on our social media channels. What Does Reponsible Breeding Mean? Why Chose A National Canine Organisation Registered Breeder? 2024 NATIONAL SHOW / RESTRICTED TRIALS: LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB OF SA INC Dogs Australia are pleased to advise the approval of the application received from the Labrador Retriever Club of SA Inc to conduct the 2024 National Show with Restricted Obedience Trial and Restricted RATG Trial on the 19 to 21 July 2024 at the David Roche Park, Cromwell Road, Kilburn, South Australia. NOTES FROM THE LITTER DEPARTMENT Breeders are required to submit their Litter Applications when the Orivet DNA Parentage Verification reports have been finalised and received from Orivet. Litters that are received by Dogs Queensland without the DNA Parentage finalised will be subject to the $10 Litter Sendback Fee.

RULES FOR THE CONDUCT OF AGILITY TRIALS TEMPORARY MODIFICATIONS Dogs Queensland advise that the temporary modifications as outlined below remain in place. Current Rule: 7.2.1 On the Steward’s call of the dog’s catalogue number, the Handler will enter the ring via the entry point, with the dog on lead and follow the Steward’s and/or Judge’s instructions. The lead and harness or head collar must be removed, the collar may be removed and all items handed to a Steward. The temporary modified Rule: ‘7.2.1 On the Steward’s call of the dog’s catalogue number, the Handler will enter the ring via the entry point, with the dog on lead and follow the Steward’s and/or Judge’s instructions. The lead will be removed, the collar maybe removed. The Handler will either place the lead/collar in a pocket whilst running the course or wear it on them (e.g. clipped around their waist like a belt). If any of these items fall to the ground or the dog grabs the lead while running the course this will result in a DQ. The lead/collar must be inaudible and if not this will result in a DQ.’ Leaving out ‘harness or head collar’ was based on discussions about modern ‘active’ wear doesn’t usually have pockets. As such these large and sometimes heavy items could not be ‘stored’ on the handler with ease. This is also to prevent them from falling on the ground and becoming a trip hazard as well as to prevent the possibility of the spread of Covid-19 should it be present either on the equipment or the ground. CONFORMATION JUDGES COMMITTEE: FEE AMENDMENT 2022 - 2023 Conformation Judges Training fees for the 2022 2023 intake: • Entrance exam for first time applicants $55 • Application to attend Group theory lectures and exams, for four sub groups $200. This is to be paid upfront prior to the commencement of lectures (this fee is non refundable) • Re-sit a sub group theory exam $50 on a per exam basis • Hands On exam $60

Election Notice Release – Monday 10 October 2022 Nominations Open – Friday 11 November 2022 Nominations Close – Friday 9 December 2022 Resumes Booklet Released on Monday 12 December 2022 Ballot Opens – Friday 20 January 2023 Ballot Closes – Monday 20 February 2023 Additionally, prior to any appointment, all potential Directors must have a Director ID number and a valid Blue Card, details of how to apply for both are below. New ASIC Requirements – Director Identification Numbers Director identification number (Director ID) is a new requirement for all company Directors, designed to help combat illegal activity by making it easier to trace Directors’ relationships with companies. Directors can apply for their Director ID from November 2021 on the new Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS). How Director ID works: A Director ID is a 15-digit identifier given to a Director (or someone who intends to become a Director) who has verified their identity with ABRS. Directors will only ever have one Director ID. It will be kept forever even if you: • Change companies • Stop being a Director • Change your name • Move interstate or overseas. Who needs to apply and when: Anyone currently, or planning on becoming, a Director of a Company. When you must apply for your Director ID depends on the date you become a Director: Date you become a Director: On or before 31 October 2021: Between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022: From 5 April 2022:

Date you must apply By 30 November 2022 Within 28 days of appointment Before appointment

Verifying your identity & applying for a Director ID: All Directors need to apply for their own Director ID. The fastest and easiest way to do this is to apply online via your myGovID. When you receive your ID you will need to pass it on to your company record-holder. No company can be formed or altered without all Directors having a Director ID. From November 2021 you can log in to ABRS at www.abrs.gov.au to apply.

DOG WORLD July 2022

Dear Member, The Dogs Queensland Board has recently looked the provision of Blue Cards for our Volunteers, especially our Junior Handler Judges. All Junior Handler Judges will now be required to have Blue Cards, as will all Directors and Junior Handler Committee Members. Any Junior Handler event held will require the Judge to have a valid Blue Card for all events conducted after 1 October 2021. If you already have a Blue Card, please provide your Blue Card Number and Date of Birth to Dogs Queensland, if not, this is the process to follow. What you need before applying for a Blue Card Blue Card Services work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to verify your identity and obtain the photo for your blue/exemption card. You will need a customer reference number (CRN) from TMR before you apply for your blue card. You can find this number on any product TMR has issued to you, such as: • a driver licence • marine licence indicator • photo identity card • industry authority If your photo was taken more than 6 years and 9 months ago, you will need to have a new photo taken at a TMR service centre. If you are coming from interstate or overseas, the fastest and easiest way to get a CRN is to visit a TMR service centre when you arrive in Queensland. If you have the necessary ID documentation, TMR can take your photo and issue your CRN while you wait. You can then apply online for your blue card. You will also need the email address associated with your TMR account. To check these details Log into your TMR Account - https://www.service.transport.qld.gov.au/tmrportal Step 1 Blue Card - Apply online Register for an online account You will need to register for a Blue Card Services online account before you can apply for your blue or exemption card. Breed Feature

SHAR-PEI

The Shar-Pei is a loyal and very loving companion who are adaptable to almost any situation, although they prefer to be in the company of their owners inside the home. 10

DOG WORLD July 2022

Shar-Pei (literal translation from Cantonese) is ‘sand skin’ which refers to the short rough coat texture that is typical of the breed. HISTORY OF THE SHAR-PEI This ancient breed has its foundations as far back as 206 BC in a small town named Dah Let in the South China Province of Kwong Dong. As evidenced in the ancient tombs from around 2000 years ago, archaeologists discovered statues bearing the likeness of the Shar-Pei. Clearly, the Shar-Pei has known foundations as a Temple dog however history shows this breed to be better known as a Chinese fighting dog. These dogs were multipurpose working farm dogs that were used for hunting, tracking, herding, protecting livestock and as basic guard dogs. Following the Chinese revolution in the 1940’s communism was born. The new communist China imposed harsh taxes on the keeping of multiple dogs as this was a luxury. This ultimately led to the Shar-Pei becoming an endangered breed. In 1978 the Guinness Book of Records listed the Shar-Pei as “The world’s rarest dog”.

other breeds such as the Bull Mastiff, Chow Chow, British Bulldog, Boxer and the Bull Terrier. In contrast the “Western Meat Mouth” has a heavier muzzle (hippopotamus look) with meaty padding on top and generally has longer hair (Brush Coat). COAT TYPES Horse coat – extremely short with a course sandy feel. Brush coat – must not exceed more than 2.5 cm at the withers and should still feel course and be offstanding. It is unacceptable and considered a major flaw to have a soft or wavy coat that exceeds 2.5 cm at the withers. Shar-Pei are one of those breeds whose appearance is quite unique. They are abundant in wrinkles, and they have a broad hippopotamus muzzle which creates a serene but powerful appearance. Apart from these traits, they also come in a varied array of colours.

In the early 1970’s this rare and ancient breed was bought out of virtual extinction by the breed’s saviour Mr Matgo Law. Following a letter written to an American magazine by Mr Law, he pleaded to those who might be willing to pick up the challenge of rescuing the Shar-Pei from potential extinction. There was tremendous response from over 200 American dog enthusiasts that took up the challenge to save the breed. THE STANDARD AND GENERAL APPEARANCE An alert compact dog of medium size and substance. The Shar-Pei should be square, close coupled and has a well-proportioned head in line with the body. Other characteristics include distinctive lavender to blue-black tongue, relatively loose skin on head and over shoulders, small ears, “hippopotamus” muzzle shape, high set tail and compact well knuckled toes. TRADITIONAL VS MODERN It is widely thought that the original type of SharPei is commonly known as the “Bone Mouth”. The traditional look had much fewer wrinkles, roof-tile muzzle, pointed tail and short hair (sandpaper type coat). The modern day Shar-Pei as we know it “The Western Meat Mouth” is a melting pot of integrating

considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog. NOTES Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum. HEALTH AND WELL-BEING The health and well-being of a Shar-Pei is largely determined by providing a well-balanced and nutritional diet that supports Healthy skin/coat brain development, eyes, bone density/strength, stamina, metabolism, dental care. Fundamental to this breed is a diet which is predominately made up from either chicken or fish. Many brands of dog kibble do contain both these basic ingredients however, the quality and grades do vary. The essential ingredients are as follows: • • •

No more than 22% protein (chicken or fish) Omega 3,6,9 fish oils Whole brown rice

Some side effects of a poor nutritional diet are excessive shedding, dandruff, loose stools, gassiness, itchy skin. Never feed a Shar-Pei red meat as this can lead to skin problems. Other factors to consider with this breed regarding their health and well-being are eyes, ears and moderate exercise. EARS Closed ears and small canals often lead to bacterial and yeast infections therefore regular and thorough cleansing is required. EYES As this breed can be susceptible to Entropion (eyelash rolling inwards) regular monitoring of the eyes is imperative to identify any irritation before leading to a more serious medical condition. EXERCISE

The Shar-Pei requires only moderate daily exercise to maintain healthy muscle condition and mental alertness. This might consist of several short walks/ runs, throwing a ball and general backyard fun. This makes them a versatile breed suitable for individuals or families looking for a low-medium maintenance dog. SUITABILITY The Shar-Pei is a loyal and very loving companion who are adaptable to almost any situation, although they prefer to be in the company of their owners inside the home. As they do not require a great deal of exercise, they are comfortable to live in everything from a small unit to a large farmhouse as long as they are surrounded by love and assurance. The Shar-Pei is best suited to living with their own kind as they can be misunderstood due to the way they interact and play which is almost completely different to most other breeds. They are a very family orientated breed with a natural propensity to be protective. All in all, they make a great family pet.

Endurance Trial 22 May 2022

Congratulations to the Belgian Shepherd Club on a successful Endurance Trial held at Durack on the 22 May this year. With enduring non-stop rain, water lapping the sides of the roads, much of the grounds unusable and dog shows cancelled, The Belgian Shepherd Club forged on to be the only event held at Durack on this very wet weekend. The grounds were deemed safe and suitable for the Endurance Trial after a last minute inspection and although the rain continued, the dogs enjoyed the cooler temperature. All eight competitors and dogs completed the course successfully even though they were handicapped with mud splatter from time to time.

FIRST AID:

bleeding severe

Joanne Bibby – Fursafe® Did you know that a dog can die literally in minutes from blood loss? The standard volume of blood in a dog is 8% of their body weight. Take my Silky Terrier for example, she is 5kgs, therefore, Izzy has only 400ml (0.4 of a litre of blood); not a whole lot if you ask me! As dog owners it is imperative that we know how to control severe bleeding. Without management your dog could bleed to death before getting advanced veterinary care. Shutterstock

DEFINITION Bleeding which is severe and life threatening if not managed quickly and efficiently is otherwise known as Haemorrhaging.

CAUSES Internal and external trauma to arteries, veins and internal organs; such as:

• Puncture • Amputation

• Blunt force trauma

Causes can also be from:

• Embedded / penetrating object

• Blood disorders

• Cut

• Cancer

• Laceration

• Ingestion of rat bait and other rodenticides.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS / ACTION

Reference: Fursafe® Emergency Dog First Aid Guide

WOUND TYPE

DESCRIPTION

Embedded / penetrating object

Object has penetrated skin, possibly to deeper tissues or body cavity

MANAGEMENT • Do not remove object • Secure object in place with DIY donut bandage, securing that in place with a rolled bandage • Make sure you do not apply pressure on object; you just need to stabilise it

Cut

Skin has been sliced opened by some-thing sharp

• For severe bleeding apply direct pressure over the wound with a clean cloth, sterile bandage or gauze • Elevate

Laceration

22

Tear in the skin, a jagged cut

DOG WORLD July 2022

• Do not attempt to clean wound when bleeding is severe

WOUND TYPE

DESCRIPTION

MANAGEMENT

Puncture

Small hole in skin and underlying tissue caused by a sharp object

• If blood soaks through first band-age, add additional bandage; don’t remove first one as it may cause further bleeding

Tear

Skin has been ripped off

• May need stitches or other medical treatment, so you will need to go to the vet.

The following conditions require these immediate actions: 1. Muzzle (do not muzzle if unconscious, breathing difficulties, trauma to chest or face) 2. Administer first aid treatments as per table below 3. Transport to vet WOUND TYPE

CONDITION

Open wound

Arterial bleed

TREATMENT Pulsing / spurting blood

• Cover with dressing or wound bandage and apply pressure • Secure a compression bandage around bandaged wound (never use a tourniquet unless advised by Vet) • If blood soaks through first band-age, add another bandage over the top (do not remove initial bandage) • Lift affected part or limb above heart level • Treat for shock • Transport urgently to Vet

Open wound

Venous bleed

Prolonged oozing blood

• Cover with wound bandage and apply pressure • If blood soaks through first band-age, add another bandage over the top (do not remove initial bandage) • Fit a compression bandage if re-quired • Lift affected part or limb above heart level • Treat for shock • Transport urgently to Vet

Closed wound

Internal bleed

Lungs: coughing up red frothy blood Stomach: coffee ground like vomit Bowel: black tarry faeces Chest cavity: difficulty breathing, pale gums Abdomen: tense muscle wall, pain, shock

• Treat for shock; • Transport to Vet Take a sample of vomit/faeces to Vet for assessment

If you are unsure what to do, wrap wound with clean towel and apply pressure; then call your Vet for guidance.

Supporting Our Fellow Members Last weekend when the grounds at Durack were fully utilised with many of our dog sports I happened to see Mary Waldon walking around with an oversized cheque. Mary presented two cheques on behalf of the Caboolture Sports Committee and Caboolture Sports Dog Obedience Club donating $1000 each to the Ipswich Dog Obedience Club and the Brisbane Dog Training Club. This very generous gesture was presented without any fanfare showing how our clubs work towards looking after one another. Both clubs lost almost everything due to the flooding earlier this year. – Barb Murfet

Breeder Alert –

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Puppy Scam Websites

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is: • A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet. • The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix. • A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry. • Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published. • No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website. • The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures. • The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam: •

Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate. • Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct in person contact with you. •

Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam: •

Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

Ask for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.

Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.

Multi BIS & BNIS & Best Class in Show Awards Touchofchow Team – owned by Janette Ursida-Mouroufas

‘OUR CHOWS HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED AND THEY LOVE THE TASTE’ Touchofchow in South Australia has been exhibiting Chow Chows for over 20 years and breeding for 10 years. We breed to introduce worldwide stunning lines to better the breed here in Australia and we are achieving amazing success in and out of the show ring with both our smooth and rough coats. Our puppies are given the best start to life being exclusively fed Medium Puppy and our adults are conditioned on Premium Performance Sport. We used to add supplements and vitamins to our dog food until we found Eukanuba™ which already contains biotin to help maintain glorious healthy coats for the show ring, folic acid for our reproductive mothers and glucosamine to provide cartilage nutrition and joint repair. With the addition of Eukanuba’s 3D DentaDefense, our Chows have everything they need and they love the taste.
