The Canine Control Council (Queensland) Ltd has two director positions on the Australian National Kennel Council Ltd (ANKC Ltd) with similar Corporations Law responsibilities for this national body. Those director positions have traditionally been held by the President and Senior Vice President. Over the last few years those Board meetings have been conducted over Zoom with good results. The ANKC Ltd Board meeting on 15 and 16 October 2022 will be conducted in person in Sydney with the State and Territory administrators meeting the day before on Friday 14 October.
The role of a director is a voluntary one and directors are not paid for their time and effort in the role. For those travelling extensive distances to and from the meeting, there is ambit for reimbursement of petrol expenses. And of course, our Zone 2 and 3 directors, able to attend in person, have their return flights paid for by Dogs WeQueensland.generally have an extensive agenda at these board meetings, so directors need to read the material provided with the agenda prior to the meeting to ensure that they can discharge their considerable responsibilities under the Corporations Law as a director for the Canine Control Council (Queensland) Ltd. The Executive, comprising Mrs Barb Murfet, Miss Carolyn Ryan and myself, generally meet with the General Manager, Rob Harrison, the week before the Board meeting for a heads up on issues to be addressed at the meeting and any further preparatory work that needs to be undertaken.
“ We just had the Dogs Queensland August Board meeting last night so it is a good time to write this message to members. For those who are unaware, these meetings happen the fourth Monday of the month and usually run for around 3 and a half hours from 6pm to 9.30pm. Directors try to physically attend but that is not always possible, and Zoom has been a good option particularly during Covid times.

I announced on Ring 2 at the Ekka and worked with the other stewards over 6 long days. I have done this for quite a number of years now giving me a pretty good understanding of the Ekka Dog Show operations. And I can say that there is a very good case for having toilet facilities just for exhibitors, stewards and judges due to the extensive queues that we experienced in the outside facilities. Some misinformation has been circulating on social media about Dogs Queensland providing and funding alcohol for stewards at the Ekka when that is absolutely not true. Dogs Queensland is a sponsor of the Ekka and contributes funds as a sponsor and for space for the Dogs Queensland Stewardsstall. are required to be members of Dogs Queensland and volunteer their services over specified dates for the duration of the Ekka. The RNA has routinely provided complimentary alcohol and soft drinks for stewards in each of the divisions at the Ekka for many years. At the end of a long day stewards can have a drink and some cheese

For Limited Register puppies this will come into effect from 1 January for puppies whelped from that date.
It is confirmed that there is a choice of Massey or Orivet for DNA testing. We are now in September so it is a good opportunity for breeders to “get their houses in order” and look to DNA profile their breeding stock in the lead up to 1 January 2023.

” and crackers and enjoy each other’s company before heading home. Purchased alcohol must be consumed in designated areas on the grounds but the Ekka Showgrounds are a fully licensed venue meaning that the consumption of this complimentary alcohol provided by the RNA is perfectly legal. I hope this clarifies the position.
Just a reminder with the forthcoming shows that the following FCI rule needs to be complied with just at the CACIB/ FCI Shows.
A reminder to members that compulsory DNA testing is being extended to limited register litters meaning that all puppies will need to be DNA tested, whether on the Main or Limited Registers.
The dogs that a judge handles at a FCI-CABIB show where he is not acting as a judge must be bred, owned or co-owned by him, by a partner, by a member of his immediate family or any person living with him in his household. Wishing you and your families a very happy springtime in our dog world.

This will be a super opportunity for directors and administrators to meet new faces in some of these roles and to further develop effective networks. The Ekka It was just great to have the Ekka happening after 2 years of Covid cancellations. The new venue was well received by exhibitors with the high roofline giving an airy and light atmosphere. Considering it was a new venue and the length of time since the last Ekka, I think the RNA did an excellent job with the organising and staging of the Dog Show. There is no doubt that improvements can be made but that is to be expected. We are looking forward to meeting with RNA officials for a de-brief and to work towards improvements in the staging of the dog show in 2023. The Dogs Queensland stand needs to be better located and this will be on the Asagenda.asteward
Dogs Australia had previously advised Dogs Queensland of the dates for the 2024 National Agility Trials to be held by Dogs NSW on 25 to 30 June 2024 at the Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs, 44 Luddenham Road, Orchard Hills, New South PleaseWales.notethe dates for these trials have changed to now take place on 10 to 14 July 2024 at the same venue noted above.
APPROVAL OF 2020 NATIONAL SHOW –RESCHEDULED TO 2023 Dogs Australia has advised Dogs Queensland the rescheduled dates for this show will be 11 to 13 August 2023. The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) has confirmed this date will not clash with the breed judging at the 2023 Brisbane Royal Show (EKKA).
Rationale: Currently this only applies to Members of State Rottweiler Clubs, but due to the horrific outcome for puppies where two carriers are still being mated by non Club members we request ALL breeding pairs be tested. Over the past 6 years stats show an average of 19% of the Rottweiler population worldwide being tested are shown to be carriers. This is a recessive gene and can be controlled by selective breeding. Please read attached NRC(A) JLPP Scheme. We refer to Dogs Australia Statement: Dogs Australia registered breeders follow a strict code of ethics, conduct health checks and, for accountability, are supported by a database of inherited diseases – ORCHID. We believe JLPP should be added.

23DOG WORLD September 2022
– Andrew Brown
The Irish Wolfhound is a truly ancient breed. There are written records by the Greek Philosopher Arrian from about 100AD describing the Celtic Hound. Arrian had his own Celtic dog and she was described as blue-grey in colour and swift, and neat on her feet. A dog’s skull was found in a peat bog in Ireland that very closely resembles the modern hound and has been dated at approximately 3000 years old. They are mentioned in The Book of Kels which was written by Irish Monks about 1000AD and are mentioned in many Celtic myths and legends. Irish Wolfhounds have been given as gifts to many Royal Households throughout Europe through the ages and these gifts to Scottish Clans led to the development of the Scottish WithDeerhound.theagrarian development of Ireland under English rule, the need for the Wolfhound disappeared and the breed came close to extinction. The Irish Wolfhound was rescued by the efforts of Capt. Graham, a retired Army Officer and a group of dedicated friends. They travelled through Ireland and gathered all the Hounds they could find and commence the revival of the Breed. This was done with very careful breeding with mainly Scottish Deerhounds and laid the foundation for the magnificent breed we have today. There are many Irish Wolfhounds all around the world today due to the efforts of Capt Graham and his friends. Irish Wolfhounds are some of the most generous and kind dogs, and will form an incredible bond with their family. They are kind and considerate with children and other animals. The Wolfhound requires daily exercise to stay in good condition and this is good for the Wolfhound and their people. Weekly grooming and a bath every 2 or 3
The Irish Wolfhound Club Of Queensland has been going since 2016 and has around 50 members made up of breeders, pet owners and show goers from all over WeAustralia.havemany get-togethers during the year including our Specialty Show held at the Durack Sports Grounds normally in August, St Patrick’s day in Brisbane city, the gathering at Ipswich Turf Club and many smaller get togethers such as Southbank walks, beach walks and Sunday lunches at dog friendly pubs. 24 DOG WORLD September 2022
The Irish Wolfhound is an intelligent dog and learns very quickly and is easy to train but becomes bored easily with repetitive exercises and does not excel in the Obedience Ring.
The Irish Wolfhound is a Sight Hound and still has the instincts and abilities to hunt and because these qualities are so strong they are excellent Lure Coursers. They enjoy coursing and it is a great activity for the Wolfhound and their Wolfhoundshumans.have been successful in the Show Ring with their size and commanding appearance catching the eye of the Judge on many occasions.
The Irish Wolfhound is the King of the Dog World and is an amazing companion in any families life and his great size and quiet dignity gains admiration where ever he goes.

26 DOG WORLD September 2022
– Ethel Blair Australians have a strong track record of helping when they see a genuine need and will step up and give generously to a crisis whether that be in our country, or in another part of the world. When Russia invaded Kiev I suspect many people looked at the news and felt confronted by the many images of cities and towns being decimated. Especially the images of people evacuating from their homes and carrying their dogs to safety were very poignant and illustrated that Ukraine people in their worst hour tried to look after their animals. Being in Australia on the other side of the world left many of us with a feeling of helplessness on how we could help BasenjiUkraine.Breed Network Queensland’s (BBNQ’s) fundraising campaigns for Ukraine really started with a message from a Basenji friend in the USA who was expressing her concern about the animals caught up in the war. She asked whether there was anything we could do to help, especially the Basenjis who were being displaced. Then another friend from afar made contact and asked a similar question, which led the author to contacting a friend in Sweden to find out what the Basenji community in Europe was doing to help. It was suggested if the Basenji community in Australia wanted to help, then we could send funds to the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) because they had set up a special account to receive funds from around the world and would distribute the donated funds to various animal aid agencies and to the Ukraine Kennel Club. This was a good option, particularly when we were so far away and did not have the contacts in Europe to manage our funds and/ or to provide direct assistance.
Our 3rd campaign was launched on March 25: “Sadly BBNQ/A is running another fundraising appeal for a Basenji Breeder in Ukraine. Oleg lives in Kyiv with 5 adult Basenjis and 4 puppies, and he is one of the original Basenji breeders in Ukraine. He cannot leave his country because all males between a certain age are required by the Government to remain in Ukraine. Oleg needs financial support to feed his Basenjis and to provide vet care to his puppies. Please donate where you can. All donations are welcome and will help Oleg care for his Basenjis during these very challenging times in Ukraine.”
Oleg received his funds and was extremely grateful that people on the other side of the world cared enough to help him with funds. Just when we thought we might hang up our fundraising boots, another person was brought to our attention so we launched our 4th campaign on April 2: “Yes, there is still more Basenji breeders to help in Ukraine. We are going to run a quick, short appeal for Tatiana Shevtsova who lives in Dnipro Urkriane to raise $500.00. The situation has grown worse in Dnipro so she has decided to travel to Poland with her 4 Basenji puppies. Tatiana is a Alice Dubas’ Basenjis safely in Poland

BBNQ ran its 1st campaign on Facebook to raise funds for all dog breeders in Ukraine, which was launched on March 13: “Basenji Breed Network is promoting an appeal started by Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) to assist Ukraine breeders and their dogs. The funds will be managed and dispersed by the FCI and will be used to assist ALL breeds of dogs and their breeders. Please consider donating to this appeal…” There was an overwhelming response to the post and 24 hours later an invitation was received to a Facebook group that was set up to enable people around the world to communicate and share information with people and their animals who needed assistance. Being in this communication loop on Facebook helped keep us abreast of what was actually going on in the different cities/towns in WeUkraine.alsoasked Lana Belakov to assist BBNQ to communicate with the people who were going to assist. We thought Lana would be a good candidate after seeing a Facebook post she did showing her family and friends standing in the centre of Melbourne bearing placards saying, “I am Russian, but I stand with Ukraine”. Lana’s contribution to our efforts was invaluable. We raised just over $1,000 AUD for the FCI campaign.
On March 17: we launched our 2nd campaign – “A Ukraine Basenji breeder with her 6 Basenjis and 2 Dogs needs to evacuate from Ukraine with her animals. We have 24 hours to raise some funds to send to her so we can secure a van and a driver to transport her dogs. We know that when she starts her 1,000 km journey she will be challenged. We are calling upon your Aussie generosity again to assist her.” Alice eventually evacuated her mother, sister and her 8 animals to Poland. She said a number of times how grateful she was for the support Australian Basenji breeders showed her. Following our 2nd campaign, we were notified of another person who was stuck in Kiev with his Basenjis. He had some young basenji puppies and adult dogs and was requesting funds for food and vet care.
On return to Queensland he continued Judging and Stewarding. In his later years he kept busy bricklaying many kennels in the Brisbane area. He instilled in many trainees to study hard and when judging to enjoy your day with a joke and a cold Whiskey at the end of the day.

April 15: “Thank you to all who donated to Basenji Breed Network Qld Australia appeals to help Ukraine dog and Basenji Breeders. All funds have now been distributed. What an amazing effort –we raised across 4 appeals for Ukraine breeders $5,000 AUD.”
We heard that Tatiana travelled to Poland successfully with her 4 puppies and returned to Ukraine.
The people we sent assistance to are our friends on Facebook and have been for many years, and they are also a part of our international Basenji community. Our campaigns showed Australians at their best – reaching out to the other side of the world and helping people in need. Thank you to all who donated to our Call for Action and for standing together to help our friends in the dog community in Ukraine. Patrice has bred and owned Best in Show and Runner Up Best in Show at Specialties and multiple Best of Breed winners at the Brisbane Ekka. Her breeding facility, Jomeja Hounds, has this motto, “The proper and only ‘true type’ of any breed is that which most exactly subserves the purposes for which the breed is designed. Any malformation which is likely to unfit the dog for its uses is fatal to its being true to type.” – The Onlooker 1891.
“Once I got in there, I found it really invigorating discovering why breeds were the way they were and how they had evolved.”
Judging has also taken her all over the place, pick a place on the globe and she’s been there from judging the National Top 20 Ridgebacks in America to South America, Asia, Europe, Ireland and the United PatriceKingdom.has judged the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of South Africa (Parent Club) specialty show, the prestigious Top Twenty event at the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States National, the Canadian Rhodesian Ridgeback National and the Rhodesian Ridgeback World Congress show, along with presenting a paper on judging to the breed standard at the World Congress.

DIRECTOR PROFILE Patrice Johansen
Patrice began just judging her speciality, Ridgebacks, but now does them all as an all-breeds judge and now trains prospective judges. Just in the last 11 months she has judged 29 shows.
“My breeding ethic is to maintain the integrity of the breed for which it was bred, sound, functional and
And she has also successfully owned/bred/shown Whippets, Greyhounds, Giant Schnauzers, Bull Terriers, British Bulldogs, Boston Terriers and Blue Tick MovingCoonhounds.intotheworld of judging in 1992 was also a natural progression, even if driven by the frequent nudges by friends and ring associates.
I asked her whether such moments in the international ring were stressful, “No not really, you’re having fun doing what you love. You just have to be confident in your knowledge of the breed and look we’re all human and so if you make a mistake, you just have to be confident in that moment as well. And every time I go into that ring to judge I invariably learn something new.”
– David Margan Patrice Johansen is not a person to be trifled with, she’s resilient, tough and knowledgeable. She’s been through the mill of life with all its ups and downs and has been part of our dog world for fifty years as competitor, breeder, international all breeds judge and now, a Director of Dog’s Queensland. She remembers when it all started; “It was a social event when I first started a time and place to gather were you had great mates outside that ring but competitors in it, there were no dog politics then, it was simply a great time, and I was hooked. We had long breaks over Christmas then, and you’d find you really missed the events and going to the big ones, especially interstate, was just so much fun.”
Earlier it wasn’t dogs that took her fancy but horses, showing Galloway Hacks. At one point she even had a moderately successful galloper called, ‘Glenovea’. Patrice grew up in Rosewood which was a small country town then and horses were in my blood, both her grandfather and dad were accomplished horsemen and grandad had a bullock team to haul logs and also a horse drawn road crushing plant that laid the roads around Rosewood and Marburg. But the transition to dogs and especially Rhodesian Ridgebacks was easy; “You’ll find that a lot of horse people have Ridgebacks, and they are so engaging, low maintance, calm and very loyal.”

Patrice believes the congeniality of shows has faded and that where once, as competitors stepped into the ring, they felt they were on a level playing field and the judge’s decisions were accepted, now with there is an unpleasant intensity, aided and abetted by the scourge of social media.
As far as Patrice is concerned her happiest times in the dog world were those simple times of the past when a show was a fun family centred occasion.
For anyone considering training to be a judge she says; “Dip your toe in the water and have a go, you’ll find it very rewarding.” Her daughter Majella had always loved Basset Hounds but had dropped out of the dog world so recently, on the daughter’s 40th birthday, Patrice presented her with two Bassets and now Majella is back in the ring showing and competing. Great Onresult.her role as Director, she says; “It’s been an eye opener. Its very easy to be judgemental from the outside but our Board does not make decisions easily or flippantly, they take a lot of thought, work and consultation.” While not sure of whether she will stand again, Patrice Johanson hopes she has made a contribution to our collective good; “I have done my very best, supported my committees and helped make small steps towards hopefully achieving bigger and better results over time. It has been a rewarding experience to advocate for our members.” Plus, there have been a host of positions with committees that drive our passion. Chairperson for the Conformation Judges Committee, Chairperson for the Dog of the Year Committee and Secretary for the Yuggera Canine Club. I have previously held executive positions as Secretary Ipswich Kennel Club, President of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Council Australia, President of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of QLD, Secretary of the Hound Club of QLD, and committee member of the Strategic Planning Committee Dogs QLD. Her regrets? Well not having a standardised national judges training scheme is one and too, a lost past.

Amy’s Mum and Dad still do shows and trials. That passion was rewarded at last month State Junior Handlers’ finals when 12-year-old Samantha won her age group and then took on all comers to win the State final with Australian Shepherd, Twix.
Every year since she was seven Samantha has won her age group in four out of five state finals, but this time she went on to win the title of the best in state and will travel to Adelaide for the National Championships in October.
“ I’ve never really been to Adelaide before, perhaps as a baby, it will be really exciting to see another state and see what other people show and how good they Iare.”asked her if she thought she could win, “ I don’t know but I will certainly be trying to do my Mumbest.”says he daughter has had some very special “Samanthahelp; has also had the guidance and support of Belinda West who we met when she was a junior handler judge. She told Samantha that if she ever needed a dog to show she could have one of her Australian Shepherds and so a bond both human and canine was formed, and it was with Twix that she won

“ It was pretty good, pretty exciting and a bit of a shock after six years of trying.” Said Samantha.

Samantha Junior Handler
Our dog world is often perceived by outsiders as a strange one where it’s dedication, even obsessiveness and the passion of competition can be seen as well, Theodd.surprise registered by strangers when they first come to a show with its caravans of pens, fancy transport rigs and sheer numbers of people, is plain, Mostwow!outsiders just don’t realise how big this subculture is! Such is the life of the Page family, while Dad’s passion is golf, for Mum, Amy and Samantha and sometimes, brother Ryan its dogs, dogs and the competitive thrust of shows. “Its just what we do.”, said Amy They are the second and three generations of family Dog’s Queensland devotees.
Brother Ryan shares the interest but not necessarily the hard work, he entered the finals wanting to, and believing, he could beat his sister. In the end he came second to her in their age group. On her brother, Samantha said; “He doesn’t really do enough training, he has other interests .”
The family will drive all the way to Adelaide for the National Finals, which is not unusual given their love of what they do. Amy and her brood would regularly leave Brisbane on a Friday night and drive to Sydney for a show, return on Sunday night then off to work on Monday morning. “ Some people just shake their heads, they think we’re nuts, but they just don’t get it, they haven’t got the Shebug.”can’t
define in words what that bug is, but I guess all of you out there will know exactly what she is referring to, “We just love going to the events, catching up with friends, enjoying the atmosphere, the camaraderie and the competition, it’s terrific.” So, what’s next for Samantha? Simple really, more training, more shows and one day her own, perfect dog.
the state title.” It’s a view shared by Samantha “ Apart from my mum of course, Belinda has been the most help to me, showing me the way around the ring, advice on grooming and she has lent me her dogs to show. She really has helped me a lot ever since I started when I was seven.”
“ I love playing basketball and footy, but I thought I’d try and beat my sister, but I lost, that was tough luck! But I was really happy with second though.”
33DOG WORLD September 2022
Amy added; “ She just really enjoys it and likes to do well, I suppose we are a very competitive family. Samantha also plays touch football, and she likes to win at that too, she goes hard.” That determination is reflected in the effort Samantha puts into the discipline, shows virtually every weekend and the show training, the run, standing and swapping sides, again and again till handler and canine are smoothly, perfectly in synch. “ It’s fun to train and show a dog, you really connect with them, and you make a lot of friends.”
