The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

President’s Message for August 2017 One of the biggest months of the year is now upon us. We have so many events happening in August, as well as the relocation of the office to Durack being finalised. I would like to thank those Club officials who attended the recent Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers meeting held at Durack. The meeting was well supported by a number of Clubs. This meeting has been used in the past as a forum for affiliated Clubs to present items of concern or interest, and discuss them directly with the board. The agenda items forwarded, and the discussions that took place at the meeting were very constructive, and the meeting was overall very positive. The Ekka is drawing closer, and again the event has received an excellent entry. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers that came forward to help the Magazine, PR and Media Committee in packing our show bags. Don’t forget if anyone is available to help with manning the stall during the Ekka, please email Helen Mackie at marketing@dogsqueensland.org.au. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The Dogs Queensland ‘All Dogs Sports Spectacular’ will take place at Durack on the 27th of August. This is fast becoming one of our largest events, and is also a very successful promotional tool, which draws in the public at large, and shows off every area of our wide range of activities and sports within the dog world. I look forward to seeing everyone at this year’s All Dogs Sports Spectacular. Thanks must go to the hard working Committee who single handedly manage and organise this event. You have created an event that really is a highlight on the Dogs Queensland calendar every year. Your efforts and commitment to promoting Dogs Queensland are greatly appreciated by all.

Office Relocation The office will be functional at the new Durack location this month. As everyone can appreciate, moving to a new location can be a very stressful and time consuming process. Please be patient during the next few weeks, as there may be some teething issues which arise. As I alluded to in my July Message, there may be the need to cease operations for a 2-3 day period but we will keep this to the absolute minimum. Once up and running, I know the office Staff look forward to welcoming you all to the new office and taking the service provided to a new level.

The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

Show Dates 2019 Dogs Queensland is pleased to announce the results of the recent Summer Start Time survey. The question we asked was; ‘Do you believe that Conformation Shows in Queensland held in November, December, January and February should commence no earlier than 4:00pm?’ We received 546 responses and 85% of Members were in agreement. Dogs Queensland has since agreed that a Working Party would be formed to look at all Show Dates and start times for all Conformation Shows including Agricultural Shows, more details including the Working Party’s terms of reference will be provided to all Members shortly. In view of the fact that Show Dates for 2019 are going to be the subject of a review, all Clubs have been asked not to make arrangements for Judges in 2019 at this time as there could be a change in their Show Dates.

New Member Applications and Change of Residential Address All Members are reminded of the following Rule; "15.1 Application for Membership shall be made on the form as prescribed from time to time and shall be accompanied by photographic identification, proof of residency, an application fee and the initial membership subscription. Proof of residency is also required with any change in membership address details. Except current financial members of another ANKC Ltd Member Body or a child of a member of the CCCQ Ltd (if that child has been active as a handler of exhibits), will not be required to pay an application fee. Membership of the CCCQ Ltd is subject to the application being submitted to, and being approved by, the Board of Directors of the CCCQ Ltd". Members have been given some latitude re the provisions of this Rule since the introduction of the new Rules earlier in the year. From the commencement of the pro-rata period on 1st August 2017, both the photographic identification and proof of residency will be required for new Memberships and proof of residency will be required for changes in Membership address details at all times.

Top Trainer from Brazil visits Queensland Written by Ann Shannon, D.W.D. Judge The Dances With Dogs Club Qld brought Dante Camacho from Brazil to give a three day Workshop at VIP’s new astroturfed indoor centre on the weekend of 29th and 30th April and 1st May. Seventeen handlers and spectators attended the first two days and the third day was dedicated to six Advanced handlers and spectators. To say that this presenter was enthusiastic, informative, helpful, knowledgeable, able to problem solve would be a gross understatement. He had so much knowledge and understanding of dog training that we were engrossed in each and every exercise. His powers of trouble shooting and solving problems were amazing and he showed us new and exciting things with the dogs. He himself, of course being a showman for many years with the 'Superdogs' troupe in Canada, had a great understanding of our sport and how to put a great routine together. He is also an Agility handler being in many world teams in the USA and Europe. He will be back in Queensland again in September and there will be a training evening with him at Durack. The Cocker Spaniel Written by Margaret Brodie The Cocker Spaniel is a fun loving, merry little dog who makes a wonderful family friend and a devoted companion. They are an intelligent animal and very easy to train. History There is evidence of the existence of spaniel type dogs in the Mediterranean countries about 3000 years ago. Ancient Greek ceramics depict these dogs. There is further mention in Roman literature of the long-eared Spanish rabbit dogs observed when the Romans were fighting the Punic Wars (285 - 202BC). It is believed that these dogs were taken to northern Europe by the Romans and to after the Roman Conquest (43AD) of that country. Spaniels featured prominently both as working dogs and pets through the reigns of Henry VIII and the Stuart Kings and there is evidence that Henry VIII, a great sportsman, kept a kennel of Spaniels. Popularity grew during the reigns of the Stuart Kings and the dogs featured prominently in royal portraits of the age. During the 18th and 19th Centuries three types of Spaniels emerged: Firstly, was the toy spaniel (pet), secondly the springer spaniel and thirdly the wood cocking spaniel (both working dogs). The wood cocking (Cocker) spaniel was very popular as they could go through the undergrowth to flush out the wood cock.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

At this time, there was great diversity of type and colour and in the latter part of the 19th century a Spaniel Club was formed and the dogs were classified by weight, the dogs over 25 pounds being classed as Field spaniels and those under 25 pounds as Cockers. The beginning of last century saw the formation of the Cocker Spaniel Club of England and they drew up the early standard of the breed for shooters who needed a small, active, strong dog, sturdy enough to work cheerfully and tirelessly all day flushing or driving out the game. Over the years the Breed Standard has been revised and the Cocker of today is a far sturdier dog but still capable of performing the tasks for which it was designed.

Temperament

Appearance

Known as the 'Merry Cocker' this little dog is friendly, affectionate and loyal with an incessant wagging tail. He is an intelligent animal and is easy to train, happy to work and happy to play.

The Cocker Spaniel is known as a medium sized dog, growing to approximately:

They thrive on human company and make excellent companions for almost everyone: active adults, less active seniors and well-behaved children. While Cocker Spaniels are alert they will not attack strangers although they will most certainly let you know you have a visitor.

Dogs: 39 - 41cms (15½ to 16 inches); Bitches: 38 - 39cms (15 to 15½ inches) at the shoulder and a similar length to the set on of the tail. Basic colours of a Cocker Spaniel are: Black; Gold; Black and White; Blue Roan; Gold/Orange and White; Gold/Orange Roan; There are more unusual colours sometimes available such as: Black and Tan; Tri-colour; Liver and White and Liver Roan etc.

Grooming

Training

The Cocker Spaniel has a long and silky coat. The coat, if not clipped, will require regular and thorough grooming in order to prevent matting and keep the dog comfortable.

Cocker Spaniels can do almost anything. They have been used in every facet of dog work from showing to jumping, as well as being a lovable pet. They need to have the opportunity to use their intelligence and endurance and to keep their minds occupied. They are wonderful dogs for many activities including Obedience, Lure coursing, Tracking, Agility and Flyball and information regarding these disciplines can be obtained from Dogs Queensland or the Cocker Spaniel Club of QLD Inc.

It requires regular brushing and dematting of the tangles. Particular attention should be made to keep the hair trimmed away from under and around the ears, the undercarriage and around the feet and pads. The ears also need to be checked often as with the long ear cover, infections can occur. Regular cleaning with a cotton ball (not bud) is recommended.

Remember the Cocker Spaniel is an exuberant little fellow which needs to be trained.

Even if you go to Obedience training for 12 months you and your dog will benefit from the experience. It is preferred if you are in control of your dog rather than vice versa.

Health The breed as a whole fortunately does not encounter many problems. All prospective owners of a Cocker Spaniel are advised to ask the breeder about any known hereditary diseases in the breed and the measures that have been taken by the breeder to counteract them. Some problems have been known but are not common.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World

PRA – progressive retinal atrophy, canine hip dysplasia and kidney disease are those that can occur. However, none are prevalent due to DNA testing and careful breeding. So please think and research carefully before you buy your Cocker Spaniel. The sturdy little Cocker can be housed indoors or out of doors and providing the dog receives the love and affection it requires, it will happily settle for either situation. If kept out of doors, the dog will require a suitable shed or kennel which is warm and draught free in winter, cool in summer and weatherproof at all times.

Diet A 'good doer', the Cocker is not a fussy eater and will eat almost anything. As a result many Cocker Spaniels are overweight and diligence is required to ensure that this problem does not occur. Do not feed your dog human 'junk food'. Uncooked chicken necks, wings and/or brisket bones will keep the teeth in good condition. A narrow food bowl is recommended so that their long ears fall either side of the bowl and not in the food. Further advice on nutrition should be obtained from your breeder or veterinarian.

Cocker Spaniels can do almost anything. They have been used in every facet of dog work from showing to jumping, as well as being a lovable pet. They need to have the opportunity to use their intelligence and endurance and to keep their minds occupied Exercise The Cocker is a busy, active breed and it will happily walk for miles when fully mature but it is very adaptable and will be content with a couple of shorter walks a day or an energetic game. Most Cockers like water and will enjoy the occasional swim. When given the opportunity it will also enjoy many happy hours investigating interesting smells and flushing out or chasing wildlife in the surrounding countryside.

Continued from page 17 We are lucky in Queensland to have a breed Club, being The Cocker Spaniel Club of Qld. You can log onto the website at www.cockerspanielclub.com or email cscqinc@gmail.com for any information. New members are always welcome and may be assured of assistance from other members of the Club. In 2018 one of the Club's showcase events will be the hosting of the 18th National Cocker Spaniel Council’s Championship Show which will be held at the Rocklea Showgrounds on the 9th and 10th August 2018. The Club is pleased to announce their Judge Mr Mark H. Boswell (MARQUELL) from the UK.

The final note for people who are interested in purchasing a Cocker Spaniel:

'Chance' -Ch Brayroan Chase N Chance - owned by J. Newbold

The breed as a whole does not encounter many problems although there have been some cases of bad temperament arising mainly in the 'pure bred' golds. This problem is not usually found in the well-bred registered pedigree puppy (that is registered with Dogs Queensland). It is strongly recommended that you purchase only pedigree puppies registered with one of the Canine Controlling bodies in Australia. Your breeder will advise you on your puppy’s diet as well as issue you with a Certificate of Registration and Pedigree, Immunisation Certificate and a Diet and Care Information Sheet and should be microchipped.

'Bruce' - Ch Pencandy Done N Dusted - co owned by J .Newbold and N. and T. Crocker

When you buy a puppy, you are making a commitment for the life of the dog. While no breeder can guarantee that you will be getting the 'perfect puppy' you should feel that your puppy was bred to be what you are looking for in a Cocker Spaniel. Photo credits: Supplied by Julie Newbold

The Cocker Spaniel Written by Nic Mather The Cocker Spaniel is a merry, active and sturdy dog with an enormous following. Part of the Gundog group, the Cocker Spaniel was originally bred as a working dog to flush out and retrieve game. The most commonly retrieved game for the Cocker Spaniel was the Woodcock, hence the origin of its name. irst and foremost, the Cocker Spaniel is a merry dog. Their tails never stop wagging and are always ready to share their joy with those surrounding them. The word 'merry' is used constantly throughout the breed standard. Although originally bred as a working dog, the Cocker Spaniel most commonly seen today is of the show type. The main visible difference between the working type and the show type is size and feathering. The show type Cocker Spaniel is a sturdier dog with much more substance than the working type Cocker Spaniel and has a larger coat with more feathering. Regardless of the type of breeding behind the dog, signature traits must still remain.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

A Cocker Spaniel should be merry, it should be compact, it should not be over exaggerated in any area. It is a moderate dog boasting with personality and a soft expression. A Cocker Spaniel regardless of show type or working type, should be able to work all day. It is a highly active dog requiring a minimum of one hour of exercise per day. Not to be fooled by their soft expression, a Cocker Spaniel is extremely intelligent. The breed is highly affectionate and will bond strongly. If not managed correctly, this can lead to separation anxiety. Whilst a Cocker Spaniel adores company, it should also be able to maintain its own independence.

August 2017 - 21

Continued from page 21 It is their exceptional temperaments and eager to please, that makes a Cocker Spaniel a wonderful pet. When trained correctly and consistently, a Cocker Spaniel will be an obedient and loving companion. If left untrained and unstimulated, they can become highly destructive and vocal. The Cocker Spaniel is unfortunately commonly associated with Rage Syndrome or 'Cocker Rage' as it is nicknamed. In the 1980s, this was heavily sensationalised by the media. The truth is that Rage Syndrome is not specific to Cocker Spaniels and has been reported in a large number of other breeds. It is also not very common at all in Cocker Spaniels and is considered by many long term breeders to be in fact quite rare. A poorly trained dog that has been allowed to choose and follow its own rules, will often be quickly labelled as having Rage Syndrome when the dog shows any form of aggression, when in fact it simply needed clear and concise rules in its upbringing. It is believed that the popularity of the Red/Gold Cocker Spaniel in the 1980s was the contributing factor to the term 'Cocker Rage' as there was an increase of breeders who were not breeding for the wonderful temperament of the dog, but in fact for the lucrative side of popularity. Buying from a respectable ANKC Registered Breeder who breeds for temperament and enrolling your puppy/dog into obedience programs that are both followed in school and at home, will help minimise the risk of aggression and other behaviours commonly misdiagnosed as Rage Syndrome.

You will find no other more loving, more loyal and more merry than the Cocker Spaniel. They truly are a breed that fill the hearts and homes of many. You will find no other more loving, more loyal and more merry than the Cocker Spaniel. They truly are a breed that fill the hearts and homes of many. The 9 th and 10 th of August 2018 will see the Cocker Spaniel Club of Queensland Inc host the 18th National Cocker Spaniel Championship Show at the Rocklea Showgrounds. All are welcome to come and attend the event and see our wonderful breed in action. For more details visit www.cockernational.com

The versatility of the Cocker Spaniel is wide. Not only does Australia hold several Australian Champions, Grand Champions and Supreme Champions in the conformation ring, it also has a very large number of titled dogs in Agility, Obedience, Rally-O, Tracking, Lure Coursing, Canine Disc, Flyball, Retrieving and Endurance. Cocker Spaniels are also used as assistance/medical alert dogs and involved in many therapy programs run by organisations such as Delta Therapy Australia. Grooming is a very important part in owning a Cocker Spaniel. It is neither difficult nor laborious if done regularly. Due to the long floppy ears, it is important that the hair around this area is kept short to allow as much airflow as possible. Another area to keep short is the hair around their feet. If left to grow too long it will cover the pads on the dog and it will lose its ability to hold traction on hard surfaces which may result in long term injuries to the dog.

Australia’s First American Cocker Spaniel Tracking Champion has now become a

Track and Search Grand Champion T.CH. TS GRAND CH. LARAMIS CAROLINA BELLE, CD Submitted by Mary, Neale and Dizzi Bickerton he was born on 30th August 2007 in Sydney. The little fluffy ball of black and white wool with a curly tail, flew to Queensland at the tender age of nine weeks to begin life in her new home near Samford, with the Bickerton family and a couple of Shetland Sheepdogs and two cats, as well as several Rhodesian Ridgebacks, as companions.

Track and Search - 2011

She was allowed a mere three weeks to settle into the family before she commenced her tracking career. She gained her first tracking qualification at 10 months with her next one two weeks later. By the age of 12 months she had her Tracking Dog title. The following year was the time that Dizzi discovered that she was a Cocker Spaniel, and quail were thick on the ground. She was initially distracted as would be expected of a Gundog, but managed to drag her attention back to the job on hand, and when a herd of cattle stood in her track, she composed herself, and then got on with the job of finding the ‘lost person’, but her composure with the cattle was a credit to her and her ability to track the person along ground overlaid with cattle scent, was exceptional for such a young dog. We then started doing Obedience and she gained her CD Title, but showed no enthusiasm for retrieving a dumbbell, so we concentrated on tracking, and she qualified to become Australia’s first American Cocker Spaniel Tracking Champion during 2010.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

This was the year when we started a very different type of tracking, Tracks had now gone from country paddocks, to city parks, but Dizzi took the three tests for her TSD Title in her stride. Not being a dog who lived in the city, it took her until Easter, 2017 to obtain the rest of the 10 qualifications needed in Track and Search, to become a Grand Champion. Her final test comprised a 1,000 metre track in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, three hours after the track had been laid at 4:00 pm, during which the tracklayer travelled 200 metres in a car. Judge Tiki Friezer from NSW gave her a ‘very good’ pass. Thank you, Tiki. She is also the first dog in SE Queensland to become a Grand Champion, joining the three (all Gundogs) from Rockhampton, with this prestigious title.

Continued from page 29 There have been many downs, as well as ups along the way, and we have travelled many kilometres up and down Queensland to get there, tracking in different towns and under very different conditions. For example, she gained her Track and Search Championship in Townsville and her Grand Championship in Brisbane. Dizzi and her personal slaves have had some wonderful experiences in their time together and made a lot of friends in the tracking world both human and canine. She is a self-opinionated little dog, who has very definite ideas of her own. She thoroughly enjoys tracking, which allows her mostly to do her own thing and, so far as she is concerned, the camping part of it is definitely a bonus - everybody spoils her! However, obedience is not her ‘thing’ and 15 months after gaining her first qualification at the CDX level, she is still no further. “Tracking is fine, I can tell you where to go. Anyway, who wants to pick up a stupid dumbbell” is her attitude.

There have been many downs, as well as ups along the way, and we have travelled many kilometres up and down Queensland to get there, tracking in different towns and under very different conditions. After many years of owning Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Shetland Sheepdogs, she's a breath of fresh air and I adore her! Our sincere thanks to all those Judges over the years who have put up with us and seen fit to grant us qualifications. Her parents have Agility and Jumping Titles to their credit, as well as being Show Champions, and this indicates what a versatile breed the American Cocker Spaniel is. It has the added bonus of not shedding hair, but as you can see from the photos, I have opted to clip her as long hair in rural paddocks is not the easiest thing to deal with. New State Government Legislation Members in Zone 2 should now be aware of the State Government's new legislative amendments requiring breeders supplying puppies to be registered on a State Government registry. Dogs Queensland has liaised with the Government from the early stages of the development and progress of this legislation and has been recognised as an Approved Entity. This means that, rather than our members having to register as a breeder on the State registry and receive a supply number, their details are supplied and managed by Dogs Queensland as long as they have provided their consent, and they will use their Dogs Queensland breeder number (usually their membership) as the supply number. Member can access the database online and check if they have been registered. If not, it is strongly advised that they contact Dogs Queensland to confirm if there are any issues. The requirements of the legislation are designed to enable tracking of breeders of dogs and primarily relies upon the advertising of the supply number. Dogs Queensland members have been doing this for many years as part of our Rules, so there are few changes for our members.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World

Attending Agricultural Societies

Club Show Dates

Many of our members attend Agricultural Society Shows and these are generally very enjoyable events where we can relax and also integrate with the general public who are usually very interested in what is happening.

Following some of the commentary on social media, it has been identified that some clashes have crept into the Show calendar which have meant that events have not always been able to be as well patronised as they may be. This is why it is very important that all Clubs review their proposed Show dates as early as they possibly can to manage any such situations.

As part of their affiliation with Dogs Queensland, Agricultural Societies provide some entry passes based on entry numbers. I reproduce part of Rule 10.1 which states: “Approvals will be dependent on the Society providing passes to exhibitors on the scale of one (1) or two (2) exhibits – one (1) pass, three (3) or more exhibits – two (2) passes.” This means that exhibitors will be entitled to either one or two passes for the exhibition and as such if additional persons are intending to attend, additional passes required must be purchased. We are already extremely lucky that for our $10 (general) entry at an Agricultural Society Show we receive passes which are valued at, at least $15. At many Agricultural Society Shows, exhibitors are just waved through without too must stringency about checking entries and passes entitlements which is very generous and I’m sure, gratefully accepted by members. However, we should never be offended or combative when checks are made and may require the purchase of an additional pass. Unfortunately, it has been reported that at several Agricultural Society Shows, some exhibitors are becoming quite aggressive with volunteers manning the gates when they attempt to bring more persons than they are entitled to under their free passes based on their entries.

Dogs Queensland generally circulates and publishes the proposed Show calendar at the beginning of the year preceding the proposed Show year (for example circulating 2019 Show dates in draft at the beginning of 2018). This provides a great deal of time for Clubs to review and manage any situations. Show dates are generally allocated to weekend numbers and with the way that days roll over through the years there can be times when dates fall out of alignment. In these circumstances, especially where an event is usually paired or grouped with other events, it is critical that the Club reviews their dates and makes contact to try to resolve issues as soon as possible. The dates that Clubs wish to hold their Shows is at their discretion so it is not up to others to know or be aware of issues or for someone else to resolve an issue. We, as Clubs, must be accountable and manage our Schedules.

Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time.

This is, of course, unacceptable and incorrect and where reported will be dealt with by Dogs Queensland. Please remember that the volunteers on the gates are exactly that – volunteers and should be afforded respect and not be subjected to outrage or rudeness and have their day ruined by someone behaving in an uncivilised and outrageous manner.

Member Insight The Queensland Dog World

A Chronicle about Ethics By Patricia McLeod International All Breeds Judge

y first introduction to this subject came when I was very young. In those days it was very likely that the school mistresses were of very august nature with very strict views on the behaviour of their young pupils. They possessed Good Manners charts which were hoisted at every opportunity. We were forced to memorise and follow the dictates of these charts. My mother was a retired teacher. She was not aged but was sidelined by marriage and motherhood. She believed in all the items mentioned on the Good Manners charts so we had no possible avoidance. The Prefect system was in vogue so the older students, invested with these honours, made sure that the directions on the charts were thoroughly followed. My generation did not all follow these teachings. Human nature ensures there are conscientious objectors to all dictates. But at least there were many who were well behaved. And we were definitely led to believe that our elders set good examples. And it is possible that most of them did do that very well. At university there was no real mention of the subject. Good times were enjoyed by most. But once again, because of the post war problems, the people had their minds on other things. My first employment was in the Pathology Laboratory at the state’s largest hospital. Pathologists and senior scientists were my bosses. On the first day of work I was stunned when faced by yet another behaviour chart. On this one I was reminded that 'The patient is your bread and butter'.

34 - August 2017

It went on to list many other behavioural necessities. And by and large most of the senior people did lead by example. It was a place where overtime was unheard of and staff stayed at work until all the day’s tests were completed. Many of the staff bonded in the effort to excel. I am still in touch with some of the people with whom I worked so many years ago. So around this time I purchased my first purebred dog. My family had always had Kelpies and cattle dogs. My choice was a Collie Rough. But I did not get into showing as she was more of a companion. When I was married we bought two purebred English Cocker Spaniels and joined the CCC. We did enter a few shows but were put off that pastime by the attitude of some exhibitors. But when our dogs had puppies we did register them and provide pedigrees. We always had fun with our dogs. At a later stage we became very serious fanciers of another breed and from then on experienced all the problems with competitor’s behaviour. But we did make some long and lasting friendships with likeminded people. There are many dog fanciers who know how to behave very well. Unfortunately, there are a number who crack under competition. The governing body has produced a comprehensive list of rules for ethical behaviour. Sadly, there are some people who spurn any idea of reading these rules.

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

Member Insight The Queensland Dog World

Others keep quoting real and sometimes imagined rules thus irritating all. But many people are aware of the requirements and never transgress. Our governing body has changed in that it is now elected. In the past the Committee were chosen and appointed. I believe that these people who seek high office have an obligation to lead by example. That has always been how it has worked in every field of endeavour which I have experienced. At Shows it seems that the Show Managers have to cope with any difficulties. These people cannot be everywhere at Shows. I often wonder if the prefect system was installed and good behaviour volunteers were empowered to officiate at each ring, if that would stop some of the problems.

Many of the staff bonded in the effort to excel. I am still in touch with some of the people with whom I worked so many years ago. A lot of the bad behaviour occurs around the ring. Items of dissension involve illicit and uninvited photography, loud and divisive comment on ring activity, mobile phones particularly in the assembly area, swearing and foul language are just a few of the causes of complaints. The use of social media to carry on examples of bad behaviour has already been dealt with by governing bodies. In America, the AKC has an AKC rep. at every Show. They are not Show Managers but they keep popping up at different rings. These people are employed by the AKC. I doubt that the dog fancy here could afford such a thing. Basically, dog showing in Australia is still an amateur sport, unlike the USA where professionals reign. Anyone for a good manners chart?

Canine Operational Service Medal Written by George Hulse The Canine Operational Service Medal was introduced on 8 June 2017 to recognise the contribution Military Working Dogs make whilst serving on operations. The Medal forms part of Defence's internal recognition scheme and is not part of the Australian Honours and Awards System. The Australian Defence Force is the first Defence Force to implement recognition of this nature. The Medal will be awarded to Military Working Dogs who have 30 days service continuous or aggregated on a declared operation. Phase one of the project will focus on identifying Military Working Dogs with service on operations from East Timor (1999) to current day. Phase two will focus on Defence conducting research to identify Military Working Dogs with service from Vietnam onwards.

Ribbon The ribbon colours represent Purple - animals, Green - land, Yellow – loyalty; and Blue - sea and sky.

Clasps A clasp with the name of the operation for which the award is made is presented with the medal. A further award of the Canine Operational Service Medal in another area is recognised by the issue of an additional clasp. Additional clasps are worn above previously awarded clasps, in order of date of receipt. The following clasps have been issued for the medal: • • • • • •

EAST TIMOR ICAT IRAQ 03 SOLOMON IS II TIMOR-LESTE G.M.E. OPS

Application As this is an internal award, award lists will be generated through relevant units and applications will not be accepted from the general public. Photo credits: Supplied by George Hulse

Design The Medal is made in Australia from nickel-silver and has been designed to reflect the Australian Defence Force Military Working Dog capability. The obverse (front) features Combat Assault Dog Quake, who was bred by the Air Force Breeding Program and passed training elements to become an Army Combat Assault Dog. Quake died on operations in Afghanistan on 25th June 2012. The reverse (back) features the Australian Defence Force logo.
