A Breed Snob
and Proud. August 2016 - 1
The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for August 2016 August is upon us already and what a massive month it will be. Firstly, I would like to thank those Club officials who attended the recent Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers meeting held at Durack. The meeting was well supported by a number of Clubs. This meeting has been used in the past as a forum for affiliated Clubs to present items of concern or interest and discuss them directly with the Board. The tone of these meetings seems to have been shifting away from the Club focus and this is something the Board will be discussing. The Ekka is drawing closer and again the event has received an excellent entry. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers that came forward to help the Magazine, PR and Media Committee finish packing our show bags. This Committee has also been working hard to develop a refreshed look for the Dogs Queensland stall at this year's Ekka. The new stall will better promote our organisation and really stand out to the public. I, for one can’t wait to see the finished result of this Committee’s hard work. The Dogs Queensland ‘All Dogs Sports Spectacular’ will take place at Durack on the 21st August. This is one of our largest growing events and has also been a very successful promotional tool, which draws in the public at large and shows off every area of our wide range of activities and sports within the dog world. I look forward to seeing everyone at this year’s All Dogs Sports Spectacular. Thanks must go to the hard working Committee who single-handedly manage and organise this event. You have created an event that really is a highlight on the Dogs Queensland calendar every year. Your efforts and commitment to promoting Dogs Queensland are greatly appreciated by all.

The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
Service Delivery Review I am happy to advise that Dogs Queensland have now agreed for Board Matters to undertake our organisation’s first operational service delivery review. This has been quite a lengthy task to nail down and the cost factors involved have definitely been a significant impediment. In the next few weeks, members will receive an email which will outline the details of the service delivery review, including the scope of the project and the expected commencement date. Queensland Government Puppy Farming Legislation Much concern and discussion has arisen about the recent developments with the Queensland Government surrounding the provision of member details in order for Dogs Queensland to be recognised as an ‘Approved Entity’ under the new Legislation. After your feedback, the Board agreed to engage the services of Hawker Britten to assist us in lobbying our position with the Queensland Government. After only a few days of engaging their services, Hawker Britten were able to establish a meeting for us with the Chief of Staff to the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries. The tone of this meeting was very positive and we now have to wait for further comment from the Minister before we decide what our next course of action will be. Rest assured, we will continue to fight for our members. Shane Thomas President

Notice to advertisers The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

Event Managers and Stewards Committee Rule Explanation Rule 226: a)
All eligible exhibits shall be brought before the Judge for adjudication for class or special prizes/trophy or challenge certificate, as the case may be, immediately the relative class is called by the Ring Steward, and an exhibit not so produced shall be deemed to be absent. At times exhibitors are called upon to leave the grounds in an emergency. If this occurs, the correct/courteous thing to do is to notify the ring steward of the situation, which would prevent delays in the running of the show. This is also allowed for in Rule 222, where an exhibit which has won a challenge (not best of breed) can be excused without loss of the Challenge points.
b) The Committee of any Body holding an exhibition under these Rules shall accept no responsibility with reference to eligible competitors being brought before the Judge, and it is necessary that an exhibitor make his/her own arrangements for the exhibit to be taken into the ring. Under no circumstances must judging be delayed owing to a handler not being available. It is not the responsibility of the Committee or Stewards to facilitate extra handlers for any exhibit. If it is necessary for extra handlers to be arranged, this needs to be done well in advance of the call to the ring, because under no circumstances will any Steward or Club Official be permitted to delay judging to allow for a handler to finish handling in one Group and still handle in another. To ask these volunteers to do so is contrary to these rules. The courteous thing to do is to notify the Steward that your exhibits are present, and then wait patiently within hearing distance (not chatting, but listening) for your call. Remember that Stewards are NOT obligated to call each number more than once, but most call up to three (3) times. Simply put – if the dog is not ready to be taken into the ring when called – it will be deemed and marked as absent.

Our dog world has lost an esteemed and much-loved Lady.

Library News The Queensland Queensland DogDog World World
&
The Newfoundland & the Beagle Two very different breeds are to be featured this month - the Beagle and the Newfoundland.
I had some trouble in deciding which books from the Library would best compliment these breeds as there are several books on each on the shelves. Three books on the Beagle – 'The Beagle' by Marcia A. Foy and Anna Katherine Nicholas (published 1985) - 'The New Beagle' by Judith M. Musladin, A.C. Musladin and Ada Lueke (published 1990) – 'Beagles Today' by Andrew H. Brace (published 1997) – all of which present interesting insight views on the breeds. As a matter of interest, all three of these books were donated to the Library by the late Judith McMurtrie, a past President of the Canine Control Council and Beagle exhibitor. On the subject of Newfoundlands, we have a few books on the shelves, all of which cover the history of the breed, standards and health etc. 'The Newfoundland – Companion Dog – Water Dog' by Joan C. Bendure was published by Howell Book House in 1994 and in the 'Foreword' it is mentioned that when published, it had been almost twenty years since Howell had published a comprehensive volumne concerning the Newfoundland. The other book on Newfoundland , 'Newfoundlands Today' by Hedd and Del Richards is the subject of this month’s Book Review.
I have been approached lately by a number of people asking about Library opening hours. Because of my commitments in other areas, I find in difficult to set established opening times. However, as I have mentioned previously, I can be contacted on 0407 961 025 to make suitable times for Library access. I am only too happy to oblige in any way I can. I mentioned in this column some time back that in the Durack Library there is a glass cabinet which we purchased for use for anyone wishing to showcase breed memorabilia or Club Trophies. Sadly this offer has not been taken up by anyone – so it sits there in a rather sad and empty state. If you have Club or personal memorabilia you really don’t have a place for, check this out. Thank you for your support. Helen Acworth Librarian

Book Review The Queensland Dog World
‘Newfoundlands Today' by Hedd and Del Richards Reviewed by Helen Acworth Librarian I chose this book as the subject for this month's Book Review because to me, it presents the breed from many angles – the Water Dog, the Draught Dog, the Show Dog and the family pet and companion dog. Described as the 'gentle giant of the dog world, 'it combines a large powerful physique with a mild, docile character. The 'Introduction' goes to lengths to try to establish the origins of the Newfoundland which appear to be somewhat indistinct – mentioning the possibility of 'Bear Dogs' or that the Tibetan Mastiff on its eventual journey over the Asian continent, had a part in the Newfoundland’s development. It would appear that it did not originate on the island of the same name. Readers of this book will enjoy the various chapters on breeding, health and general breed standards, which are accompanied by the lots of colour photos. The copy of the book in the Library was donated by 'The Newfoundland Social Club' which does not now appear to be in existence – but 'Thank You' for the donation. It is an Honour to have this book available to Library members. Recommended as a great read.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Newfoundland Br eed I nf or m a t i on Supplied by Jacqui Wallbank he Newfoundland is a large heavily coated, well balanced dog that is deep bodied, heavily boned, muscular, strong with a sweetness of temperament being the hallmark of the Newfoundland breed. They are renowned for their unique gentleness, even temperament, loving nature and devotion. Historically, they have displayed a keen sense of responsibility and life-saving instincts and their acts of heroism both on land and on sea are recorded in history.
16 - August 2016
These attributes make 'Newfies' a good choice as a companion for children and adults. The natural water rescue instincts of the Newfoundland are particularly evident when children or family members are in the water, the Newfoundland takes his guarding responsibilities very seriously, quite often circling around and herding his family to shore. They have an uncanny ability to sense when someone in the water needs help, whether it is family or strangers and will swim out to assist.

Coat
dog show held in Victoria. Among those dogs were a number of Newfoundlands.
The adult Newfoundland has a flat, water resistant double coat. The outer coat is coarse, moderately long and full, the under coat is soft and dense. The oily nature of the Newfoundlands double coat effectively keeps him from getting wet to the skin and combined with his webbed feet, deep broad chest and well sprung ribs contribute to his swimming ability.
The breed gained popularity and stock was continued to be imported up until 1930, after which World War II saw the end of importations. No further litter registrations were recorded until 1961, when a small number of Newfoundlands reappeared on the scene again.
Despite his heavy coat, he adapts to warm as well as cool climates. In warmer climates, his longer outer coat stays the same but the under coat thins out to some degree. Nevertheless, in hot seasons and subtropical climates, great care must be taken to keep a Newfoundland cool and avoid overheating and potentially fatal heatstroke.
Breeding of Newfoundlands in Australia was re-established in 1965 when dogs from the United Kingdom were brought into Victoria and this was the beginning of the Newfoundland breed as we know it today. Many Newfoundland breeders have continued to import dogs from all around the world to continue to improve the breed in Australia today.
Colours
History
Recognised Newfoundland colours are black, brown and black plus white. A solid black with a splash of white on the chest is the most common colour scheme.
The Newfoundland is one of the few breeds indigenous to the North American continents. First mention of the Newfoundland as a distinct breed came from the journal of Sir Joseph Banks in 1700.
Less common is a solid brown or a solid brown with a splash of white on the chest. The Landseer variety has a white base coat with black markings.
Size The average size of an adult male dog is 28 inches (71cm) and 70 kg. An adult bitch is 26 inches (66cm) and 50-55 kg.
Grooming Grooming your Newfoundland not only makes him look nice but cleans his coat and skin, thus doing away with dirt, mats and loose undercoat which can often cause skin trouble. Newfies love the attention they receive while being groomed. If you do it regularly it is much easier as you will not have a tug-o-war with mats and snarls which hurt the dog and take away from the pleasure and companionship of grooming. Start grooming your young puppy and they soon grow to love this time. Feet and ears will need regular trimming and it is important to trim toe nails every few weeks.
Australian History A Newfoundland named Hector was the first to arrive in Australia with the First Fleet in 1788, there is no further record of the breed in Australia until 1864 when 22 dogs were entered in the first

Continued from page 17 The breed as we know it today originated from dogs brought from the Canadian island of Newfoundland to England in the early 1800s. Newfoundlands have been used thoughout history as a working dog on water and on land. Its extremely large bones give it mass, while its large musculature gives it the power it needs to take on rough ocean waves and powerful tides. These dogs have huge lung capacity for swimming extremely long distances and the thick oily double, waterproof coat protects him from the chill of the icy waters. The droopy lips and jowls make it easy for him to breathe without taking in water while carrying ropes or rescuing in rough sea.
With their working ability, Newfoundlands were used for taking ropes ashore in the North Atlantic seas, retrieving lost fishing gear and rescuing humans lost overboard. The breed has also been used as a pack animal, sled dog, and carting dog.
Sports Newfoundlands are used for water rescue sports all over the world. Great Britain first sponsored formal water tests for Newfoundlands in the late 1800s and The Newfoundland Club of Newfoundlands began its water tests in 1973. The water tests offers the Newfoundland an opportunity to perform a series of exercises designed to show their natural life-saving instincts and ability. THREE
REASONS
WHY YOUR DOG ISN’T RESPONDING:
PART SUPPLIED BY ERIC BRAD
n Part 1 and Part 2 of this series '3 Reasons Why Your Dog Isn’t Responding', we explored the two most obvious reasons why your dog doesn’t respond to cues. Sometimes your dog literally doesn’t get the message and you can’t really blame him for not responding. Other times, your dog has not been trained in a behaviour sufficiently — in all the ways he needs to perform it — so he doesn’t always understand what is expected. We’ve already talked about some great ways to address these situations and make it easier for your dog to succeed.
There are two basic strategies for getting your dog to perform a behaviour for you. You can make it worth your dog’s time and effort and reinforce the behaviour by rewarding your dog with something he wants. Or, you can make NOT performing the behaviour too costly – do it or face the unpleasant consequences — punishing him for choosing incorrect alternatives.
The third reason your dog doesn’t respond as you’d hope is a little more tricky and a bit more sensitive as well. Dogs perform behaviours for us for their own reasons. As thinking creatures, they have the capacity to make choices; they are not obligated to cooperate. So something must motivate them to work with us instead of doing their own thing.
How much reinforcement is enough?
Reasons Why Dogs Don’t Respond It’s not worth responding even if they heard us and knew what to do. This can be one of the hardest things to accept about dogs. You might think your dog is just blowing you off or sulking about some imagined offense. But it’s important to remember that dogs have evolved as a scavenger species, taking advantage of the cast-offs of early human settlements. As such, they are very much self-centered opportunists who constantly perform cost/ benefit analyses to determine what they want most right now. Is giving you the behaviour you asked for worth it for them right now? Dogs are not as altruistic as you might think.
20 -August 2016
In my experience, reinforcement provides far better results than punishment for the simple reason that it does not discourage a dog from trying new things.
Modern dog trainers often reward their dogs with food treats or 'play' for all kinds of behaviours, even for well-known or frequently performed behaviours. Each time the dog gets rewarded for performing a behaviour, that behaviour is reinforced. Over time, this creates what trainers call a 'history of reinforcement' in that particular behaviour. Think of it as a bank account. Each time you 'pay up' for the behaviour, you deposit good will into your account. And each time you ask for the behaviour without rewarding your dog, you make a withdrawal on that good-will account. Unfortunately, this is not as easy as it looks. It’s not a one-for-one ratio. Behavioural science has taught us that behaviours with a long history of reinforcement are more resilient than less-often reinforced behaviours.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
To use the analogy of banking, the more you have deposited in your account over time, the less costly an unpaid behaviour is when you need to make that 'withdrawal'from time to time. The biggest mistake trainers make is not reinforcing the behaviour enough before asking for unrewarded behaviour. Some dogs can be exceptional at learning new behaviours and seem to 'get it' within only 10 or 20 repetitions. A handler can then feel that the dog understands the behaviour and it no longer needs to be rewarded. Over time, the behaviour begins to break down. The handler may not realise that it is the absence of rewards that has caused the little scavenger to decide that doing the behaviour is less rewarding than sniffing that wonderful scent over there.
In my experience, reinforcement provides far better results than punishment for the simple reason that it does not discourage a dog from trying new things. The good and evil of slot machines Many trainers object to the use of consistent rewards to keep a dog motivated to perform. They believe a dog should respond on cue out of love or some other form of altruistic loyalty. Some trainers use the analogy of a slot machine that pays off only every so often and always as a pleasant surprise. They believe the sporadic nature of the reward will keep the dog motivated to keep working for them. That’s a common misconception.
It’s a big world out there If you want to reward your dog for good behaviours, you need to have something interesting to him. Fortunately, most dogs are just crazy about food, any food. Most of them enjoy playing as well. But the world is full of other really interesting things too and sometimes the world will compete with you for your dog’s attention. It could be that something really interesting in the environment has his attention instead of you! This is where you need to refer back to Part 1 of this series which discusses the reasons why your dog may not have picked up on the signal you gave him. As a good trainer, you need to be ready to have very interesting stuff with you if you want your dog to work with you in challenging environments. For instance, if my dog sees a squirrel at the park and all I have to offer is a kind word and a pat on the head, well, my dog will choose the squirrel over me. If, on the other hand, I have pieces of bacon with me, the squirrel is simply not a factor for my dog.
This kind of sporadic reinforcement doesn’t strengthen behaviour. In fact, it makes some behaviours more resistant to going away — or it weakens them. Most learned behaviours do better with more frequent rewards. The trouble is, many times people feel that getting the behaviour without having to reward the dog is the sign of great training. So it becomes their goal to get the dog to work without a reward. And that’s a mistake. The more frequently you pay your dog for working with you, the more likely he is to eagerly perform for you in future.

Being a good communicator So it becomes a matter of being able to assess whether or not you have the ability to hold your dog’s attention before you ask for a behaviour. This is where all three of the reasons your dog might not respond will come together. Fortunately, you have some control over all of these. Ask yourself three simple questions when your dog fails to respond to your cues: 1. Did my dog hear/see my cue clearly? 2. Did my dog understand what she was supposed to do when I gave her the cue in that situation? 3. Was I giving my dog a good reason (history of and potential for rewards) to give me the behaviour I was asking for just now? The answers to these three questions tell you what you, as a good trainer, can do to improve the situation in future. 1. Be sure that you are signalling clearly and consistently and that you have your dog’s focus and attention. 2. Go back to training and 'proof' with more work to be sure that your dog knows what to do in the situation by rewarding him in a training environment. 3. Do what you can to show the dog that it’s 'worth it' to offer the requested behaviour by providing frequently providing the right incentive in the training environment. As Jean Donaldson, author of Culture Clash, says, we have the big brain in the relationship. So it is our responsibility to identify where the behaviour broke down and to provide our dogs with whatever they need to be successful in the future. Dogs are frighteningly honest creatures. If your dog doesn’t respond, there is a reason. And that reason is never a frivolous fancy, a mood swing, or revenge for some past disappointment. It’s either something you did or something you didn’t do – in the moment or during training time. It’s your job to fix it. Just remember, your dog doesn’t lie. So learn from what you see, consider the questions above and the answers will quickly follow! Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Zone 2 Dog World Column – August 2016 e have now reached the second half of the year and we are about to start one of the biggest events of the year for Dogs Queensland – the All Dogs Sports Spectacular st on 21 August, as well as the EKKA Canine Competition and some big breed specialty shows coming up.
What’s On in Zone 2 in August?
Dogs Queensland and our dogs to the public. Drawing so many entries, the EKKA is also a wonderful place to catch up with friends who we maybe haven’t seen in a while. Dogs Queensland has put a fantastic show bag together for this event and it is accessible to regional members – even those who are unable to make it to the EKKA. If you would like to purchase one (they are only $20 each), please contact me at craig.pettett1@bigpond.com and we can make arrangements. I will be attending the EKKA on the Dogs Queensland stand so transport back to regional areas can be arranged.
In August, Zone 2 members have a choice of several events to participate in, including:
Rules in Action – Rule 148
• •
Nobody ever wants to be involved in an unpleasant incident at a show or event with their dogs and it is really important for members to be extremely vigilant and aware of their surroundings to ensure that this does not happen.
• •
Sarina Show Society Champ Ag Show (Sarina) – 6th August Magpies Mackay & District Obedience Club Tracking (Mackay) – 6th and 7th August Magpies Mackay and District Obedience Club Double Obedience, Agility, Jumpers and Games – 13th August Rockhampton Kennel Club Champ Shows (Rockhampton) – 20th and 21st August
With fewer events on in the Zone during August and major events on in Brisbane, many members from the regional areas will be travelling to Brisbane. Best of luck and safe travels to all competitors travelling to competitions.
All Dogs Sports Spectacular – 21st August 2016 Since the first ADSS, this event to promote our organisation and the activities we participate in has grown and grown at a huge rate. The hardworking committee who have overseen the inception and growth of the event over the years has once again worked tirelessly to bring a bigger and better product in 2016. Members are encouraged to get involved and to promote this event to their family and friends as it is a wonderful way to learn about Dogs Queensland, who we are and what we do.
EKKA
Dogs Queensland makes the requirements on members clear in their conditions of entry with Rule 148 stating: It shall be a condition of entry that each exhibitor shall: a. • • b. • • c.• • d. • • e. •
• f.•
We have another good entry and all preparations have been made for the EKKA Canine Competition in 2016. As well as the competition for our members, the EKKA is a fantastic (probably the best we have) opportunity to promote

This is quite a comprehensive list but reading through it, the items do make sense and they are there for the protection of all members and dogs at the event. A few tips to be aware to ensure we comply with these rules and don’t get involved in an unpleasant issue include: 1. Always keep your dog under effective control, close to you and be aware of the environment – just because you are being responsible, it unfortunately doesn’t always mean that others are or are taking as much care, so it pays to be vigilant and look out for potential hazards. 2. Never let your dog roam on a long lead or without a lead. Apart from off lead being against the conditions of entry, while your dog might be very well behaved and may have a good recall, it doesn’t mean that everyone else's does and by not having your dog under effective control it reduces your ability to manage hazards that may arise. 3. Make sure the crate, trolley or accommodation for your dog is adequate and sound and that there’s no chance of your dog getting out. 4. Keep an eye on your dogs, not only to ensure security but also to make sure they are comfortable, toileted regularly and provided with water and food. 5. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an incident with your dog, it is very important that you go and see the Show Manager to discuss what has happened.

Celebrating achievements for over twenty-three years Supplied by Jeff Souter President The Beagle Club of Queensland
itting back under the trees beside the newly refurbished Shorncliffe jetty, the breeze gently blows in from Moreton Bay. Looking down over the beach where a group of playful, happy Beagles and their even happier owners enjoy time with friends and other Club members, I thought to myself, “This is what the Beagle Club of Queensland is all about. Now in its twenty-third year, the Beagle Club of Queensland prides itself on being truly an active, Statewide Club, supporting and promoting the breed across Queensland. With its newly completed Strategic Plan, the Club has as its mission, to 'support the development and welfare and undertake the promotion of the purebred Beagle within Queensland'. The Club has identified six strategic areas of focus around which to deliver its mission and has a strong membership to coordinate activities for the Club across Queensland. This includes supporting regional areas, embracing the regions of Ipswich, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Gladstone, Cairns, Hervey Bay and Mackay, as well as Brisbane. Club regional contacts in these areas allow local members to enjoy the support of the Club and for the Club to provide the same assistance, information and services to the breed across the State. This enables the Club to live up to its name of being a Beagle Club of Queensland.
26 - August 2016
Promotion As the Club strongly advocates for the promotion of the purebred pedigree Beagle, we undertake as many activities as we can to display the Club and the breed across Queensland. Clubs have a very limited opportunity to promote their breed and responsible dog ownership and the Beagle Club of Queensland ensures any opportunity to put our breed on display is taken advantage of. One of the best opportunities for the Club to promote the breed and to provide information on the values of the Club and Dogs Queensland is through regular social activities. This mostly includes social walks, where Beagles and their owners get together to enjoy the company of other Beagle owners. In 2015, the Club conducted over 20 walks across Queensland, with walks in south-east Queensland regularly attended by more than fifty Beagles and their owners. In December 2015, the Club set out to break the world record for the biggest Beagle pack, which we did successfully, with 403 Beagles in attendance. This was a wonderful promotion for the breed and for purebred dogs.
Welfare The Club conducts an active rescue service, focusing on fostering and rehoming purebred Beagles. This is a significant service provided by the Club and has allowed many Beagles to be placed into a new home in a healthy and happy state.

As Beagles are unfortunately heavily used as part of animal testing programs, our Club is active in educating the public of this issue and in providing strategies to counter the use of Beagles in testing. farming and backyard breeding, aligning with the position of Dogs Queensland and the ANKC. A web presence is maintained and updated with information relating to the health and welfare of the breed, as well as producing resources distributed to the public at the expos the Club attends, or activities the Club undertakes. Each year the Club conducts their 'Pound Puppy Project' where items such as blankets, dog coats and beds are donated to the Club for distribution to a local pound or animal shelter. These donations help that facility to provide comfort to their dogs over the cold winter months.
Organisations such as the Beagle Freedom Project Australia are supported by the Club in their quest to reduce animal cruelty and to rescue Beagles from testing laboratories. In April of this year, the Club held a twilight walk to promote World Day for Laboratory Animals. Not only did we have an amazing 124 Beagles walking through Southbank, with LED collars lighting up the Promenade, we were able to use the walk to raise awareness for this day, as well as raising funds for Beagle Freedom Australia. The Club is active in providing literature relating to puppy

Education As there is a limited number of opportunities to educate the public about the breed and purebred dogs, the Beagle Club of Queensland takes every opportunity to participate in expos, displays, markets and activities to educate the public about the breed.

Regular lure coursing days held by the Beagle Club of Queensland help Club members and their Beagles enjoy this great sport
Continued from page 27 At each expo that is supported by Dogs Queensland, the Club endeavours to attend and support by providing a breed display. This includes the Brisbane RNA, the Dog Spectacular and the Gold Coast Pet Expo. Club representatives for each region are supplied with promotional material for distribution to educate the public about the breed and the services provided by the Club. The Club regularly develops materials for education on the breed, responsible ownership, health and welfare. Social media is actively used by the Club to educate the public about all aspects of the breed, pedigree dogs, health and welfare. The club’s Facebook group now has over 1400 members who provide valuable support and discussion about all matters relating to the breed.
Development The Beagle Club of Queensland is passionate about fostering the quality of the breed in Queensland and ensuring a high standard to the breeding and availability of purebred pedigree Beagles in Queensland is maintained. This includes supporting Dogs Queensland in their judge’s training program and conducting regular shows for breeders across the state and Australia. The Club is continuing to provide the opportunity for registered breeders across Queensland, Australia and around the world by increasing the number of Beagle speciality shows being held by the Club each year.
28 - August 2016
Now with two Championship Shows being held by the Club each year, along with the Open Show conducted in February, more Beagles will be on display in Queensland to assist breeders to identify suitable lines and individual Beagles to develop the breed and maintain a high standard of quality in the breed. Providing information on registered breeders endorsed by the Club, through facilities such as the Club’s website and Facebook group, enables the Club to ensure that high quality, purebred and pedigreed Beagles is the primary source of the breed in Queensland.
Sustainability It is important that in order for the Beagle Club of Queensland to continue the work it does, there is a focus on sustainability. There is vision within the Club to continue the work it is currently doing for many years to come. The success of this Club is due mainly to the many dedicated members it has in working towards the mission and goals of the Club. While not every member agrees on the same tactics and strategies, there is a unified sense of purpose within the Club towards achieving our mission. The Club has four Subcommittees in place: Shows; Special Events (such as the Beagle Ball and Beagles Across Australia events); Welfare; and Fundraising. Having these Subcommittees in place not only allows for the sustainability of the Club and its activities, it also allows members who may have an interest in a specific area of the Club to focus their efforts on what is most important to them.

It also ensures that the considerable workload required to administer and conduct the activities of the club is shared amongst more members.
Satisfaction A core focus of our Club is on its members. Over the past number of years, the membership of the Club has continued to grow, with an increase of over 25% in 2015 from the previous year. We cannot continue to grow as a Club, nor be able to undertake all the activities we plan, without a strong member base committed to the Club. Ensuring members are happy with the Club and see value in their membership is paramount to the continued growth in the Club.
The health of the Club is without doubt due to the many members across the state who have taken it upon themselves to support the breed we love so much.
The annual Beagle Ball is a semi-formal dinner the Club holds each year, to celebrate the year and to recognise achievements of members and their Beagles. This event is for members and their families, where the Club awards special medallions for membership milestones, trophies for Beagles that receive titles in various disciplines, where life membership is officially recognised, and where members can get together and celebrate the achievements of the past twelve months. As the Beagle Club of Queensland approaches its twentyfifth year, it celebrates and recognises the contributions of many members, who for more than two decades, have taken a small Club focused on supporting the showing of purebred Beagles, to a multi-dimensional, truly Statewide Club focusing on promoting and supporting the purebred pedigree Beagle across Queensland. While some events conducted by the Club are open to anyone with a Beagle or an interest in the breed, there are a number of events such as the Club camping weekends at the Coolangatta Pet Motel, along with products the Club provides specifically to the members of the Club. Discounts in merchandise for Club members, special offers throughout the year and a business directory for Club members to advertise their business is available to financial members.

A Breed Snob
and Proud.
I have a confession to make. I have an affliction. It is an affliction that in certain circles, is seen as a curse. An affliction viewed by some as a negative trait in my personality, my values and my principals towards dogs and breeding. It causes me to sometimes be ostracised for my practices and to feel an outcast. It is a trait that is ridiculed through social media. I live with this affliction every day. It is not something I can walk away from. I just have to accept that this is part of who I am and I must live with all the implications that this affliction brings. My affliction is that I am a breed snob.
30 - August 2016
My journey to becoming a breed snob began when I was introduced to the world of purebred Beagles by someone who, as a result of their willingness to guide and help me to understand my breed, urged me to make sure my first dog was purebred and registered. Back then I thought it was no big deal to go and buy a puppy from a pet shop. I was happy to walk into the local pet store, look at these cute puppies in the window and pick one that I would take home with me. It was pure chance that a work colleague of my wife just happened to breed Beagles. When my wife informed her that we were planning on getting a Beagle from the local pet shop, she made us very aware of the many potential issues and problems we may experience as a result of buying from a pet shop. The breeder – another breed snob – helped me and my wife to appreciate the value of the purebred Beagle and instilled in us all the importance and significance of pure breeding.
This person, over twenty years later, is still one of our closest friends as a result of our association with the breed and her willingness to support us in our breeding program. Some twenty years later, through my growing love for the Beagle breed, the values I have developed as a breeder and as a result of being a member of the Beagle Club of Queensland, I have developed this affliction of being a breed snob. Being a breed snob means I exhibit behaviours which are seen by some as being quite abhorrent in nature. I have taken on as part of my life the responsibility of maintaining a breed that I hold very close to my heart. I am determined to make every effort to improve the quality, health and standard of my breed. I cannot entrust this responsibility to those who breed for profit, or for those whom want to have a litter for their family, for fun, or to see what breeding is like.

There are very few puppy mills or backyard breeders whose priority is to identify what characteristics of the breed they are planning to perpetuate or, even more importantly, what traits in a breed they want to eliminate. As a breed snob I take on this responsibility. I know that without being a breed snob the integrity of my breed is compromised. As a breed snob I am compelled to breed to a set of characteristics. The characteristics are known by all breed snobs as a 'Breed Standard'. The standards have been designed to clearly identify the characteristics that constitute the purpose, nature, behaviour and appearance of each breed. These standards are based on the intent and purpose of each breed and are what I use to perpetuate my breed. Without this standard I would be at a loss to know what my breed is and how I can improve or maintain the integrity of my breed. Puppy farmers and backyard breeders do not apply these standards in their breeding programs. Instead, they determine the perpetuation of the breed by which stock can make them the most money. As a result, what comes out of these mills can be very different to the true characteristics of a breed, regardless of what they are sold as in a pet shop. I have come to realise that I have this affliction as a result of numerous posts and discussions on social media. I have seen many posts that have a very negative portrayal of purebred registered breeders. The posts portray registered breeders as elitists who don’t want anyone else breeding dogs so people will buy their dogs, thus having their lines being the most popular.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
I know that as a breed snob I must accept the ridicule of those who do not see as I do – those who do not realise how important it is to maintain the integrity of the breed. I accept the taunts from others who believe any dog that even slightly resembles my breed can be called a Beagle, regardless of its height, shape, colour, or behaviour. I know I will be the brunt of many jokes from those who have designer dogs or cross breeds. I know that my behaviours and actions will be questioned by those who have been told by pet shops that their dog is 'definitely a Beagle', even though it is almost twice the height of the breed standard.
Unfortunately for breed snobs, near enough is definitely not good enough. I must admit I can understand and accept the ridicule that is sent my way for my participation in dog shows. The pageantry, spectacle, beautification, competitiveness and the unfortunate manipulation of dogs in order to be seen as having the most beautiful dog can be at times embarrassing. I then remember what the true intent of dog showing is. The full name of a dog show is a 'Conformation Show'. The true intent of these shows is to identify those dogs that conform most closely to the standard of the breed.
A standard that is not just for the dog show but has been developed to stipulate the characteristics of each breed that most closely represent the purpose of the breed and to identify the unique characteristics that make up the breed. I accept that some of the stigma associated with being a breed snob is due to some less scrupulous purebred breeders per petuating negative characteristics or health issues within tight line breeding in order to be successful in the show ring. As a breeder, my first priority must be to ensure the soundness and health of my breed. Any success I have in the show ring is made even more worthwhile, knowing I not only have a dog that has been deemed to meet the standard of my breed but is also healthy and sound enough for me to use to perpetuate the breed. I am happy to wear the stigma when people come to me and want to know about Beagles. When they want to know about what a Beagle looks like, behaves like and is like as a pet, I can provide the correct information. I will give the good and the bad points about the breed because I know a Beagle has very specific needs. I know I am going to spend time finding the best home I can because the puppies I breed are my family. I want the best for them for the rest of their lives. I am not interested in making a quick dollar, so I will spend time being fussy about where my babies go. I have to confess that as a breed snob, I am very selective about when I breed and which breed lines, dogs and bitches I use in my breeding program.

Continued from page 31 I do not breed to get the prettiest dog. My first and foremost priority is to produce a sound and healthy puppy. If it means that I don't use a dog that is winning everything in the show ring because its genetics could compromise the health of the pups or future generations of the breed, then I won't use that dog. Maybe I have a little bit of heart within my breed snobbery affliction. It’s not that I condemn anyone that has a cross breed, chooses another breed or purchases a non-pedigreed dog. All dogs are lovable. While I accept the burden of being called a breed snob, I also accept that others are happy with owning cross breeds, designer dogs, mutts or having dogs from my breed that may not meet the standard or have not been bred with the same careful consideration that I put into my breeding program. I recognise that others do not hold the same consideration and importance that I do for producing sound and healthy puppies. I accept others hold me in contempt when I promote with pride my stance on purebred, responsible, well-researched breeding. I also accept that there are others that I consider less scrupulous than I with their breeding. I recognise that others may want to have their dogs seen as a purebred, labelling them as a specific breed, or as being special by calling them a designer dog. Simply labelling a dog as a particular breed does not make it so, nor does a new designer breed spontaneously arise because someone puts a label on a breed cross. So if being a breed snob means I am passionate about this wonderful breed; if it means I am protective about the integrity of the breed; if it means I want to see the breed continue to develop and to maintain the standard of what my breed is; if it means that through my actions, everyone is able to tell what a Beagle is for years to come; if it means I discourage people from purchasing from businesses that do not have the same integrity as I do, then yes, I'm a breed snob. And you know what... I'm okay with that. Photo credits: Supplied by Jeff Souter
