Puppy Farms

– David Margan Just before Christmas we became aware of yet another development application for an expanded ‘puppy farm’.

This time it was before the Scenic Rim Council and was a Colorbond shed to house at least 50 designer dog breeders.

The inadequacy of current Queensland State government regulation of these breeding factories is highlighted by the complete absence of any conditions The ‘Animal Keeping Code’ makes no reference to animal welfare.

In fact, the only reference in this application to this gaol’s inmates is that the facility must be constructed in such a manner “so that dogs are unable to escape.”

Dogs Queensland made a submission to the Scenic Rim Council opposing this development application, but we weren’t alone as the council has received approximately 2,600 properly made submissions.

The Scenic Rim Council is still undertaking an assessment of the proposed development and submissions received and that decision making period will expire on 2 May, 2022, unless further extended. A date has not yet been set for the application to be considered at an ordinary Council Meeting.

Perhaps we may be fortunate again, as in the Diamond Valley Kennel’s application to the Sunshine Coast Council where, while council officers recommended approval, the Council out of concern for issues of animal welfare, voted against the application to the tune of 8-1.

We’ll keep you posted.
