President’s Message
“
I
hope this August message finds you and your hounds and those close to you well and coping with the challenges of 2021. In Queensland we have been relatively fortunate, but I think most of us have been touched in some way by the current and recent lockdown challenges in other States and Territories. I think we all have a heightened awareness of the potential for change with little notice. I think that the mantra “be prepared for the unexpected” has been apposite. Hopefully we will maintain our semblance of normality and the situation in Sydney will improve soon. Although we have seen the recent postponement of a number of events and shows, we have seen many Queensland events and shows proceed. And that has been great. A bouquet to those show secretaries and to the Dogs Queensland office who have worked hard in short time frames to make that happen. The Maree Kennel Club shows a few weekends ago were a good example of this. There were a record number of judge replacements with interstate judges unable to attend. A big thank you to our Queensland judges who have accepted appointments on short notice. Our exhibitors have also risen to meet COVID demands and have generally been good about checking in, wearing masks and maintaining social distances. All so important. This flexibility has extended to the scheduling of new shows on relatively short notice. On 31 July 2021 we have scheduled the Starlight Foundation Charity Championship and Open Shows with all proceeds going to that worthy charity benefiting children in such a good way. The Open Show will benefit our aspiring judges too. Entries are around the 600 mark so a big thank you to all who have supported the event. I will be judging that weekend in Tully so I am looking forward to catching up with Northern Dogs Queensland members at that time. This week I enjoyed seeing an older Jack Russell terrier fancier on a Daintree beach in the lead up to that show weekend.

DOG WORLD August 2021
August is of course a big month for our conformation shows and dog sports events. The Ekka is a highlight and it is great to see that it has been well supported by members exhibiting and also members stewarding this one week event. Dogs Queensland has a well located stall and we look forward to catching up with members at this event. There are also stalls allocated for daily breed displays so I hope that our breed clubs will take the opportunity to set up their display and interface with the public about their wonderful breeds on the day that they are showing. These stalls are a great initiative of the RNA. August also brings our All Dogs Sports Spectacular on 22 August 2021. It is another great opportunity to showcase our many disciplines to the wider community. I encourage our members to get involved and enjoy the many events and stalls and displays organised for the day. A big thank you to the hard working committee and the office for making this happen.
”
Stay safe.
– Ulla Greenwood, President Dogs Queensland UPDATE:
Due to the COVID-19 lockdown in the greater Brisbane and surrounding local government areas the Starlight Foundation Charity Show organised for Sunday 1 August 2021 at Dogs Queensland Sports Ground was postponed. The latest extension to lockdown has also forced the cancellation of the 2021 RNA Ekka.
Board Notes – August 2021 ANKC LTD SURVEY – AFGHAN HOUND OWNERS
In accordance with Regulations Part 6 – The Register and Registrations Section 1.11 an online survey is now available from the link provided below where ANKC is seeking feedback from owners of Afghan Hounds regarding proposed minimum breeding age requirements. Details of the proposal and rationale are noted below for reference: PROPOSAL: The ANKC Ltd and the ANKC Ltd National Canine Health and Wellbeing Committee recommend that: The ANKC Ltd have resolved to conduct a Survey of all Afghan Hound owners recommending that Litter Registration Limitations are to be applied to litters mated on or after 1st June 2022:The Minimum Breeding Age for Afghan bitches is 24 months at the time of mating (unless a veterinary certificate is produced stating that for health reasons the bitch should be mated before 24 months) If litter registration limitations are approved for the Minimum Breeding Age for Afghan Hound bitches, breeders of litters whelped on or after 1st June, 2022, will be required to comply with the requirements as a prerequisite to registration of any litter on the ANKC Ltd Main Register. Litters which do not meet the above requirements will only be able to be placed on the Limited Register and will be flagged not to be upgraded. A majority of registered owners within the breed and responding to this survey must be in favour before approval is given by the ANKC Ltd. RATIONALE: The National Afghan Hound Breed Council does not presently have any rule regarding the minimum breeding age for Afghan Hound bitches so is governed by ANKC Regulations Part 6 Clause 8.2 which states ‘the minimum breeding age for bitches across all breeds is 12 months at the time of mating.’ It is considered that an Afghan Hound bitch: · is not of adequate maturity to be bred at 12 months of age as she is still developing at this age · the Afghan bitch’s health is of prime concern to responsible breeders The online survey can now be accessed from: https:// www.surveymonkey.com/r/NWC7NF2 The link is also available from the ANKC website at: http://ankc.org.au/AboutUs/?id=3298 Please note responses to the survey are required by COB 8 October 2021.

PRESS RELEASE EMERGING DISEASE – EHRLICHIOSIS IN DOGS Ehrlichiosis is a tick borne disease affecting primarily dogs. It is not transmitted from dog to dog, transmission only occurs through infected ticks, the main one being the brown dog tick. The brown dog tick is widespread throughout mainland Australia. No brown ticks have been found in Tasmania. While ticks are mostly coastal, they can be found further inland. Ehrlichiosis is the disease that is caused by a tick borne bacteria called Ehrlichia Canis. Once a dog has been bitten by an infected tick, there are 3 stages of infection: 1. Acute or early phase (3-4 weeks) 2. A subclinical phase (months to years) 3. Chronic or long term stage (months to years) Symptoms include fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss, anaemia and bleeding disorders such as nosebleeds or bleeding under the skin that looks like small spots, patches or bruising. The severity of symptoms varies considerably between dogs. The incubation period is 1-3 weeks after the tick bite, but the chronic form may not manifest for months or years following infection. PCR and ELISA tests give the most accurate diagnosis along with comprehensive blood tests. Affected dogs require veterinary treatment and supportive care, the earlier this is diagnosed and treated the better. Usually these dogs are treated with tetracycline drugs for a minimum of 4 weeks, shorter treatment periods may result in subclinical carriers. Seronegative PCR tests will indicate if the infection has cleared. If not properly treated these dogs can and do die.

DOG WORLD August 2021
Distribution This disease can be found worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas. Once the disease is in the brown dog tick population, it is very difficult to control. German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are predisposed to develop more severe signs of disease with a worse prognosis (reduced cell-mediated immune response). In extremely rare cases, infected ticks may infect people, however the species of Ehrlichia that affects humans have not yet been detected in Australia. Ehrlichosis is a nationally notifiable disease and the Government is conducting surveillance testing of dogs, particularly in the far north of Western Australia, Northern Territory and far north Queensland. The Kimberley and Pilbara regions are two areas affected in WA, along with Katherine and Alice Springs in the NT. Dogs from affected areas are being monitored and their movement limited. Dogs moving from these areas could be required to be tested prior to movement and only travelling with healthy dogs that are on an effective tick control program. Prevention Maintain dogs on a tick control program – ensure you do not run over time before treating again, even 2-3 days late could cause issues. Avoid taking dogs into tick infected areas such as the bush and long grass, especially on coastal areas. Inspect you dogs for ticks daily for 5-6 days after being in tick infested areas. Travelling The most likely way this disease will spread is by the transport of dogs interstate. Dog exhibitors like to travel far and wide for shows, often interstate. We should all be vigilant with providing tick control measures and renewing these before we travel! Do not take dogs running along beaches, through the bush etc without adequate tick prevention. Be aware at some shows, the grounds may back onto bush, do not walk your dogs through these areas. Long Term We have to be aware that this disease will in all probability become far prevalent and widespread over the next 10 years. Tick prevention should become second nature especially when travelling.

DOBERMANN
The Dobermann is bold, alert, fearless, wary of strangers, loyal and always willing to please his master, confident and courageous ... and above all he is a faithful companion with a deep love for his family and in particular young children. 10
DOG WORLD August 2021
HISTORY The Dobermann compared to many other breeds is a modern dog. While some breeds can boast that their ancient images were found etched into the walls of Egyptian tombs or their remains discovered in one archaeological dig or another, the Dobermann cannot. The handsome dog that we know today takes its name from Karl Friedrich Dobermann born on the 2 February 1823 in the German town of Apolda situated in Thuringia. As to what Dobermann actually did do for a living is a matter of conjecture as he has been credited with a number of occupations by a number of authors. He was from all accounts a night policeman (watchman), a dog catcher, a supervisor in the local abattoirs, a flayer, an administrator of accounts at Niederrossa in Apolda, a tax collector of sorts, and occasional bailiff. But whatever he did for a living he obviously needed the aid of the four-footed working companion and had a flair for breeding good dogs. What happened was that the guard dog of his time in Apolda become more or less a type and were referred to ‘as a dog of Dobermann kind’. Later they were known as Dobermann Pinchers and today mainly referred to as the Dobermann, although the modern-day breed is a very refined dog compared to those tough nuts that worked the streets of Apolda where they were renowned for their cropped ears and docked tails which enabled the dogs to do their work without the added hazard of long ears and tails for other dogs or assailants to grab and hang on to.
Prins Modern v. Ilm-Athen (1909) Dobermann did not actually start breeding his own dogs until the 1880’s when after years of living in apartments he was able to purchase a property of his own where he could pursue his passion of dog breeding. But he did have a good working companion called Schnupp who had a black coat with red markings and a lot of grey in the undercoat. Unfortunately, he was unable to breed from him as he was castrated at nine months. He did however have a good bitch with the same colourings called Bizart – this bitch turned out to be an excellent working dog, ideal for Dobermann to have at his side during his night patrols and his journeys on the sometimes dangerous tax collecting routs. She was also a good breeder, producing pups with black coats with red markings. Dobermann as a dog catcher had the added advantage

of being able to choose from the many dogs in the pound for his breeding. The type of dogs Dobermann was looking for, were around in significant numbers but they lacked uniformity. These dogs were referred to as Thuringia Pinscher or a Police Soldier Dog. Dobermann died in 1894 leaving behind him a line of dogs that established such a reputation and had become such a type that they became known as Dobermann Pinscher but they were not yet recognized by the German Dog Breeding Society that existed at the time. Even though it was generally acknowledged that the type that Dobermann favoured had been around for a long time, it was Dobermann that attempted uniformity both in appearance and performance. There was at the time a Society for Breeding and Purifying Dogs in Apolda and once a year they organised a dog fair on the Sunday before Whitsunday. It was a colourful occasion with all the trapping of a popular fair and feast day. The Dobermann type at this time stood around 40 to 50cms in height, had almost wirehaired coats, were square in shape, had steep angulation, a short thick neck, a pear-shaped head with a strong greyish undercoat around the neck. They often had other yellowish markings. They were certainly very different from the breed as we know it. Unfortunately, Dobermann did not leave any breeding records behind so there was no solid evidence as to what breeds he did actually use. After Dobermann died, Otto Goller took up where Dobermann and his friends left off. Goller had a clear vision as to what he wanted to achieve and was merciless in his selection program culling out any weak or inferior animals from his breeding program.
12
DOG WORLD August 2021
As far as to the type of breeds behind the Dobermann there have been a number of suggestions but it should always be remembered that the breeds mentioned also differ from what they are today. One suggestion is the Beauceron sheep dogs which were very similar in appearance in colour and shape to the modern Dobermann. Other breeds believed to have been used include the English Manchester Terrier and an English black male Greyhound introduced to improve and enhance the Doberman’s appearance in as far as refinement and elegance. However, several recent authorities, including Richard Strebel and German Dog specialists, believe the Black and Tan Terrier had at some stage also been used, because of its colouring and disposition – the Black and Tan being known for its keenness, alertness, speed and fearlessness. Additional theories include the Great Dane, Weimaraner and the German Short Haired Pointer. The first kennel started by Otto Goller was Von Gronland, named after the street in which he lived. Goller and Oscar Vorwek, an animal trader from Hanover and the man who Goller was to take the breeding of the Dobermann seriously, were to go and export the first Dobermann’s to the USA, Russia, Holland, Mexico and other countries. Whatever the breeds were that went into making up the original Dobermann, it had by 1900 been established as a recognised breed which was an elegant thoroughbred compared with its more boofie ancestors. Even so, the dog of the late 19th century and early 20th was by
comparison to today’s Dobermann, heavy headed and inclined to have a long wavy coat and thick undercoat. In fact, it did resemble the Rottweiler of the times. Despite being debated in its origins by modern enthusiasts, the Dobermann breeders were quite well organised and before the turn of the century had already started the Stud Book. By the turn of the century the German Police had Dobermann dogs in service and new kennels were beginning to establish themselves. Considering the relative modern history of the breed, Dobermanns became established in other countries as a registered breed in a very short time. In 1908, Dobermann intellects became the first of the breed to be registered in the USA and while the English are famous for their love of dogs, the Dobermann did not reach popularity until well after the Second World War. The word Pinscher, meaning Terrier in German, was dropped by the Germans in 1949 as it was considered an inappropriate term for a dog that was not a terrier as such in modern times. The 1950’s saw the breed really start to establish itself, not only as a working dog but also as a family companion and of course, a show dog. Importations were made from Germany, Switzerland, Holland and the USA. Such was the success of the breed that by 1974 there were over 2,000 Dobermanns registered. Australia has also had a love relationship with the Dobermann.

neurological signs associated with canine wobblers disease are usually seen between seven and eight years of age.
• Von Willebrand’s Disease is a deficiency in Von Willebrand’s factor, which is involved in the clotting of blood which result in excessive bleeding.
IN SUMMARY The Dobermann is the most affectionate of dogs who wants to be with you and be part of you at all times. Sometimes, one might feel a sedate lick of a tongue, but its rare – more often it’s the sheer presence of the dog cuddled up besides you. He is not a dog that can just be left out in the backyard and forgotten as he has too strong a personality for that. He is affectionate and loving, but with a noble kind of affection. cause if you ask any Dobermann owner for their dog’s nick-name they will tell you, its “Velcro” simply because they stick to their owners, just like Velcro does.
GENERAL APPEARANCE The Dobermann is a sleek, powerful, smooth coated dog, compactly built, medium sized square dog, muscular, of great elegance and grace who is capable of great speed and endurance. Although powerfully built he is elegant in appearance, but not from over fineness or greyhound like appearance, but rather from power and strength, proud carriage and great nobility.
TEMPERAMENT The Dobermann is bold, alert, fearless, wary of strangers, loyal and always willing to please his master, confident and courageous. He is dignified and aloof, which has been described as the “Look of Eagles”. His powers as a Guard Dog, Police Dog, Rescue Dog and Companion are legendary and above all he is a faithful companion with a deep love for his family and in particular young children.
COLOURS The Dobermann can be one of four colours: Black, Brown, Blue or Fawn – all with well-defined rust markings.
HEALTH Conditions that may affect the life of the Dobermann: • Dilated Cardiomyopathy: is a disease that affects the muscles of the heart. Dobermanns along with other large breeds are prone to this disease. •
Wobblers Syndrome: Canine wobbler syndrome usually develops gradually. The clinical signs start as mild weakness in the hind legs which progress to more severe signs. In older dogs, marked

Your Dog’s Teeth
– Petcover Australia Research at Cornell University suggests more than 80% of dogs over the age of four suffer from some form of dental disease. This high number is understandable when you think about it – our canine friends explore their world with their mouths. While most are pretty good when it comes to grooming and keeping their coats healthy, they can’t pick up a toothbrush and look after their teeth and gums in the same way. This is where you, as their responsible owner comes in. The majority of dental disease is preventable with a little time, patience and knowledge. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON DENTAL DISEASES IN DOGS? Periodontal diseases are most common in dogs and this is where they get an infection and inflammation in the tissue surrounding the tooth. Luckily, it’s easy to stop any dental problems in your dog from getting this far. Periodontal diseases often start out as gingivitis which just like humans can be easily noticed by gums being redder than normal and swelling. This is caused by bacteria in the mouth getting into the gums. To make sure any gingivitis doesn’t progress into a more serious periodontal disease, you need to be

checking your dog’s mouth every day and looking out for signs of swelling or bleeding gums. HOW CAN I CHECK MY DOG FOR DENTAL DISEASE? The best way to keep your dogs’ teeth healthy is to get them used to being checked from a young age. If they’re used to you gently opening their mouths and even using a dog toothbrush, they’ll be more tolerable of this as they get older. If you’ve adopted an older dog, you’ll need to earn their trust before you start putting your hand inside their mouth. If you’re confident they’re relaxed, start by gently lifting their lips when panting or already have their mouth open. HOW CAN I PREVENT MY DOG GETTING A DENTAL DISEASE? As mentioned, the earlier you start checking your dogs’ teeth the better, if they’re happy for you to look at their gums on a regular basis, you’ll be more likely to notice when something’s wrong. You can buy dog toothbrushes and toothpaste but it’s very important you introduce your pet to this gradually as it will be a very unnatural sensation for them to begin with. Start by just letting your pet sniff the toothbrush and let them decide if they want to lick it or have it in their mouth. You can try adding some
water from a can of tuna or some chicken fat to the brush as this will incentivise most pets to start licking. Never ever use human toothpaste as it contains xylitol which is toxic to dogs. If you’re ever worried your pet might have consumed anything poisonous by mistake, it’s essential you phone your vet immediately.

Kibble and dry food can also be an effective way to help keep plaque and tartar under control as the abrasive edges act as a natural brush.

Something for your dog to chew on can be a great way to help keep their teeth clean. Coffee tree wood and yak chews are very long-lasting and don’t splinter very easily but remember to always supervise your dog when they’re chewing anything.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO TREAT DENTAL DISEASE IN DOGS? The cost of treating anything will always depend on the pet, their history and what needs to be done. As most dogs don’t like vets poking about in their mouths, it’s always safer for them to be given a general anaesthetic so a proper examination can take place. If a simple cleaning is all that’s needed, they’ll need to be asleep for this too. Most vets will charge up to $500 for dog teeth cleaning. If teeth need to be removed, an x-ray might be needed to see the extent of any problems and maybe even blood tests if there’s a chance an infection might have caused kidney problems. Your pet will probably need some painkillers and antibiotics in this case too.

This means the cost can range from anything from a single consultation fee if all is fine to $5000+ if lots of treatment is needed.

First Aid:
Puppy Safety,
‘welcome home’
Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®
This article is a go to checklist for welcoming a new puppy into your home to ensure their safety.
Before you pick your new puppy up from the Breeder, make your home safe. I think I am the most blessed dog mother in the world!! I have Isabeau ‘Izzy’, in my life, and on the 11th November 2021, she will be 3 years old. Not only did we survive the puppy lessons such as biting, growling, chewing, going to the toilet whenever and where ever she wanted, we did it SAFELY! I waited patiently for Izzy to come into my life. I knew I wanted her to come from a registered breeder and learnt that the best place to find the right breeder, and as I live in Queensland, this was through Dogs Queensland. Izzy, my stunning Silky Terrier, hails from Quinvale; it took two years for the litter and when the day came, I was not only over joyed, but I suddenly found myself overwhelmed.

DOG WORLD August 2021
I began to worry about her safety before she even came home; she’s so little and all that. As a Veteran Safety Specialist, it is not a surprise that I would worry about her safety and till this day I accept that I am a bit of a helicopter parent. During her first year, I would wake up in the night and wake her up, just to check she was breathing. Who said having dogs was great at reducing stress!! The following is therefore really about what I learnt as a puppy mummy and as you read this consider what is around your home inside and out that could hurt your new pup. Imagine your new puppy walking around your home and in your mind watch how your puppy uses their mouth and tongue to check everything out!! Look how an 8-week-old can squeeze into every nook and cranny and shove their nose into every corner of your lounge etc. Obviously not everyone is like I am, but as puppy owners it is our duty to ensure our dogs are safe from harm. By preparing your home for their arrival you start
off on a safe footing and then you reduce the risk of losing your new arrival well before their time.
HAZARDS AND RISKS
A hazard is anything that can hurt your puppy. The risk is the consequence of being impacted by a hazard. In order to identify the hazards in your home, walk into a room and stand at the doorway looking at the lower area of the walls, floors, windows and doors. Imagine a human baby crawling on the floor; would you be ok if your baby picked up a needle and put it in their mouth? Of course not; well, same for a puppy; would you be ok if your human baby started chewing on a cockroach bate? Not at all!! Same for puppy!!
cotton, needle threader / puppy eats / internal injury.
•
Plastic bag / puppy plays with bag / potential suffocation.
• •
Toilet bleach bottle / puppy licks bottle / poisoned. Stairs indoor and outdoor / puppy attempts to go up or down stairs that are too high for them / falls and breaks limb, hip, or suffers brain or spinal injury.
•
Furniture / puppy attempts to climb up or jump down off furniture (like bed or lounge) that are too high for them / falls and breaks limb, hip, or suffers brain or spinal injury.
•
Low garden pickets / puppy jumps / puppy experiences penetration injury.
• •
Rat baits / puppy eats / poisoned.
• •
Fly spray / puppy inhales / puppy is poisoned.
The list is not exhaustive, so add the hazards you find in and around your home; think about what could happen if your puppy bites, licks, chews, swallows or runs into a hazard and so forth.
•
Medication / puppy finds on the floor and eats / puppy poisoned. Pool / puppy falls in / puppy drowns.
For example; do you have sprinklers in your back yard? A puppy would not know that they could be seriously injured if they run into a sprinkler! Therefore, sprinklers are a hazard and the risk is being killed or permanently disabled from the blunt forced or penetrated trauma into the head, face or chest.
• •
Go into the back yard and look at the fence, the garage or shed, the grass, the stones – what is there that could cause your puppy harm? The following list are the hazards and risks I identified and cleared up prior to bringing Izzy home.
Clothing / puppy chews and swallows / internal obstruction. Food on floor / puppy eats toxic food / puppy poisoned.
•
Water bottles, single use / puppy chews seal and lids / internal obstruction. Cotton buds sticks / puppy chews and swallows / internal injury.
e.g., Sprinkler / puppy runs into it at full speed / killed or permanently disabled
•
Electrical cables / puppy chew cables / electric shock (assuming there is an RCD in place).
• • •
Fuel / puppy drinks or licks / poisoned.
Ant rid / puppy licks or eats / poisoned. Loose nails in the decking / puppy swallows / internal injury.
•
Christmas decorations that stick into cupcakes/ puppy swallows / internal injury.
• •
Surface spray / puppy licks / poisoned.
Cockroach baits / puppy breaks bait housing and eats / poisoned.
•
Stones, pebbles / puppy chews or swallows / puppy breaks teeth and or internal injury.
•
Sewing materials like needles, pins, safety pins,
DOG WORLD August 2021

•
Slippery floors / puppy runs on tiles and slips / injury to ligaments.
SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Once you identify the hazards in your home; clean them up or put them away. If you cannot remove a hazard/s create a barrier. e.g., A baby gate for the stairs; or a grate for the fire place.
•
Supervise when around hazards.
•
Never leave chemicals around – place in cupboard, not on floo.r
•
Create a play pen that you can keep puppy in when you are out of the room or away from the home and at bed time.
•
Learn dog first aid. If your dog is seriously injured, you must stabilise your puppy to give them the best chance of survival as you transport to the Vet.
•
Put away anything you don’t want chewed!! Don’t assume your dog won’t want to eat your smelly shoes or laces; the smellier the better!
•
Slowly introduce your puppy to adult dogs.
•
Place rugs on tiled or boarded floors. Use non-slip contact between rug and flooring to ensure rug does not slide and dog has traction.
•
Barrier, Barrier, Barrier – especially electrical cables, stairs and swimming pools.
•
Pick up and put down puppy from beds, lounges, stairs until older.
•
Learn about the Breed of your puppy – their general behaviour, temperament and propensity to be adventurous.
•
Vaccinate your puppy as per Veterinarian requirements and follow restrictions until Vet clears them for the outside world.
SOCIAL MEDIA UPDATE
We have had further growth in our social media footprint.
This is important as our social media platforms are not just about communications amongst our membership but they also grow our brand in the broader public dog community. Our social media platforms will, in time, help us grow our membership and the influence we can have in debates about issues and regulation that bear on our activities. For too long we have hidden our light, knowledge and love of dogs under a bushel. Here are the key details of our social media performance in the month till 14 July 2021. Again, we had great results with our Dog Sports/ Show posts! In the past month it’s been more about increasing followers than posting and accordingly we have hit 906 followers and aiming for over 1000 in the next week or so. Again it was the Dog sport picture that gained most attention. Facebook top three: 1. Yuggera “Canine Club pictorial (18 June 2021) 2. Continental Herding Club (11 July 2021) 3. State Obedience trials pics shared with approval from Rapid Dog photography (2 July 2021)
