President’s Message

I“t’s been a very busy few weeks around the State. We’ve seen conformation shows including All Breeds and Specialites, Agricultural Shows and numerous dog sport events.

One of the highlights over the past few weeks was the Inaugural Sprintdog Trials. These trials have been very well supported and enjoyed by owners and dogs alike!!! Huge congratulations to all who contributed to establishing the Sprintdog!!! Special acknowledgement to Nic Mather the Queensland representative on the Dogs Australia Subcommittee, and Director Vyvyann Mannion the Subcommittee Chair. It’s also important to recognise the enormous amount of work done behind the scenes by Junior Vice President, Elisa McCutcheon who has worked tirelessly to support the Subcommittee. It was appropriate that Elisa gave an opening address at the event. Whilst the weather wasn’t the kindest, everybody seemed to make the most of the events with many dogs qualifying and even some titles being completed!!!

We had the privilege of inducting Life members to our Dogs Queensland Life Membership list. Geoff Lane, Garth Goodwin and Lawrie Knauth were each presented with their Life Membership certificates and badges at recent events. A full report can be found on pages 7 and 8 of this Dog World magazine.

Whilst our volunteers contribute significantly to the running of our dog world, from our Directors to our club officials, nothing happens without a cost. Dogs Queensland does incur significant expenses in the running of the organisation and events, just like any other business. Electricity, water, repair and maintenance of the building structures and grounds, increases in wages and insurances are just a few of the outlays we have to manage. Your Board is mindful of the effect any increases have on our members and we do our best to minimise these.

On a less pleasant note, there has been reports of theft and items going missing from members at shows.

Please take extra care of your valuables and prizes. Ensure you secure your personal property at all times and if leaving gazebos up overnight between shows, preferably remove any items of value like dog trolleys.

We have been seeing more and more incidents involving aggressive dogs at events. Please ensure you have effective control over your dogs at all times. Nobody wants to be involved in an aggressive dog incident, so please, train and socialise your dogs and be responsible when you have them at events. If in doubt, don’t compete with them until you are certain they are sufficiently trained for the event and controllable.

On Wednesday 24 July 2024, I was invited to partake in an interview on ABC Radio. This was an excellent opportunity to promote our pedigree dog world and our breeders, to the general public. It’s important we take every opportunity to showcase our breeders and dog world in a positive light to the public and to emphasise researching the breed and breeder as a fundamental part of responsible dog ownership. Likewise it’s important that our breeders provide prospective buyers with information on their breed and its requirements to ensure the puppies are a suitable match with their new homes. To listen to the interview (which begins at 15.90 minutes), click on the following link: ABC Radio Interview

We have some major events coming up in the near future. Our “premier” event, the Queensland Royal Show, the “Ekka” is a great opportunity for our members to promote our wonderful breeds and our dog world in general. Dogs Queensland will be having an information stand for members of the public to attend. We do ask for volunteers to assist on the stand each day. If you are competing with your dog/s and can spend some time on the stand with well socialised people friendly dogs, please let the staff know on the day. We welcome your involvement and ask for your assistance in promoting your breed and Dogs Queensland.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR DOG DIES

We have had a number of enquires come through recently regarding the requirement to notify when a dog passes away and not wanting to part with the original pedigree certificate.

A copy of the Pedigree certificate will be sufficient to notify the death of your dog which complies with Section 29.1 of Dogs Queensland Rules:

In the case of the death of a registered dog, the owner thereof, or if such dog is held under lease, the lessee, shall notify the CCCQ Ltd of the death of such dog within one (1) month after such death and return the original Certificate of Registration, or copy thereof, to the Secretary.

If you are unsure what dogs you have recorded under your name, a list can be obtained from our Welfare and Liaison Officer, Courtney Stevens by emailing courtney@dogsqueensland.org.au or phone 0461 275 109.

2024 Dogs Queensland Life Membership

– Carolyn Ryan

President, Dogs Queensland

Life Membership may be granted to any member of Dogs Queensland who has rendered outstanding or special services to Dogs Queensland. That person shall retain membership of Dogs Queensland for their life.

Any Affiliated Kennel Club or Financial Member may nominate any member for Life Membership. That person will have a minimum of fifteen (15) years continuous full membership of Dogs Queensland and must have been a member of a Club or Clubs during that time.

I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the members of the Life Membership Working Party, Barry Vickers, Shaneen Bendixen and Des Strong for their recommendations for this year’s recipients.

Our three recipients of this year’s Life Members are Geoff Lane, Garth Goodwin and Lawrie Knauth.

Although their resumes were very lengthy due to their exceptional contributions to the dog world, here a few highlights about each of these gentlemen..…

Geoff Lane – Geoff’s involvement in the dog world commenced in 1974 with his first Curly Coated Retriever. He owned and bred numerous breeds including Labradors, English Springer Spaniels, Dalmatians and German Shorthaired Pointers. Around 1986 Geoff introduced Skye Terriers to his kennel. In 1990 Geoff commenced breeding, showing and importing Staffordshire Bull Terriers. In all the breeds Geoff owned and campaigned he achieved many All Breeds Best In Show wins and Speciality Best in Show awards. His most recent addition was a Jack Russell Terrier who was his constant companion.

Geoff contributed greatly to a number of clubs, holding committee positions in the Northern Classic Kennel Club and the Sporting Terrier Club. Geoff was heavily involved with the formation of the Junior Kennel Club.

Geoff has mentored numerous new exhibitors and breeders including juniors.

Along with his lengthy involvement in the showing and breeding world, Geoff has held numerous positions for Dogs Queensland.

and Rules Committee for many years. His keen eye for detail and sensible guidance has proven invaluable to the committee.

Garth Goodwin – Garth has been a member of Dogs Qld since the late 1960s. He has been a member of numerous clubs including the Scotch Collie Society, Ladies Kennel Club, Metropolitan Dog Obedience Club, Northern Classic Kennel Club, Siberian Husky Club, Alaskan Malamute and Siberian Husky Club and the Beaudesert Kennel Club. Garth has held committee and executive positions on a majority of these clubs.

He has been heavily involved in events promoting pedigree dogs to the public.

Garth is a past councillor of the Canine Control Council (Qld) for in excess of 10 years.

Garth has worked tirelessly on our Grounds Committee and was responsible for the addition of rings 11-16. He continues to provide support and guidance as part of the committee.

Garth was nominated by the Beaudesert Kennel Club.

Lawrie Knauth – Lawrie has been actively involved in a variety of disciplines and is qualified to judge all levels of Obedience, Tracking/Track & Search, Agility/Jumpers/ Games, Endurance, Rally, RATG and Tricks. His adjudicating career has led Lawrie to judge extensively in the Southeast and Far North Queensland plus Singapore.

Over the years, Lawrie has titled numerous dogs with three (3) of these reaching their Obedience Champion status.

Being a founding and long-standing Member of the Logan All Breeds Dog Obedience Club inc, has enabled Lawrie to hold key roles within the Club including President for eighteen (18) years, Vice President, Chief Instructor as well as Trial Manager.

A highlight for Lawrie was receiving Life

Membership in 1985 from the Logan All Breeds Obedience Club, his home Club of forty-nine (49) years.

With decades of experience as a Senior Obedience/Track & Search Judge, Lawrie’s knowledge was invaluable, subsequently he became part of the Obedience, Tracking Judges Training Sub Committee where he served as Chair for the Tracking Sub-Committee for several years.

For the last few years, Lawrie has been Chair of the Obedience Judges Training Sub-Committee where he has organised and assisted with the training of Obedience Trainee Judges in the Southeast/Far North Queensland and Singapore.

Lawrie’s achievements are lengthy, however in 2024, Lawrie received the Logan City Council 10 year Local Legend Award from Federal Treasurer, Mr Jim Chalmers.

Lawrie has also been part of the Dogs Queensland Specialist Panel for several years.

In conclusion, Lawrie’s pride, passion and commitment to the dog world has been nothing but exceptional and to this day, he continues to be extremely active, availing himself to assist when and wherever he can.

Attention Member Bodies and Show Secretaries

The following information has been received from the FCI Head Office.

Only FCI-NCO judges that appear in the FCI Judges Directory can judge at international FCI-CACIB shows i.e. judges that are NOT listed in FCI Judges Directory CANNOT be invited to FCI international shows.

The FCI Head Office insists that in case an authorization for a breed or group is INCORRECTLY given by an NCO to one of its judges (allowing him/her to judge and award FCI-CACIB ABROAD), the FCI- CACIB proposals given by the judge will NOT be confirmed by the FCI Head Office.

What does this mean for Australian Member Bodies and Clubs intending to contract judges from FCI NCO’s (National Canine Organisations)?

From 1st August 2024 they must ensure that any judges from FCI Countries that they invite to officiate at CACIB Shows are in the FCI Judges Directory, otherwise the FCI will not confirm the CACIB awards as set out in FCI Show Regulations:

8. CONFIRMATION OF THE FCI- CACIB.

The FCI-CACIB proposals will be issued by the appropriate judges. The final confirmation will be done by the FCI. It is up to the FCI Head Office to check whether the dogs proposed comply with the conditions accepted for confirmation of the FCI-CACIB. The cards handed to the exhibitors at the shows duly indicate that the relevant dog has been proposed for an FCICACIB. They must read: “Subject to confirmation by the FCI”. The FCI Head Office must make sure that the FCI- CACIB was correctly awarded.

Attention Dogs Australia Conformation Judges

The following information has been received from the FCI Head Office.

Only FCI-NCO judges that appear in the FCI Judges Directory can judge at international FCI-CACIB shows i.e. judges that are NOT listed in FCI Judges Directory CANNOT be invited to FCI international shows.

From 1st August 2024, Dogs Australia Judges who are not listed in the FCI Judges Directory may not be invited to judge at FCI International Shows. Even if, despite this directive, an FCI Country still invites you, and you accept, any awards you give including CACIB’s will not be recognised by the FCI Head Office.

Increasingly, the Dogs Australia Office is receiving inquiries from overseas regarding Australia judges who do not appear on the FCI Judges List, we know that this factor has resulted in a lot of proposed appointments not going ahead.

Dogs Australia have 1,393 approved conformation judges, only 840 are on the FCI Judges list, if you wish to be placed on the list, complete the attached form and email it to: fcijudgeslist@dogsaustralia.org.au

Although Dogs Australia are an Associate Member of the FCI you cannot call yourself an FCI judge unless you are on the list.

JUDGES’ TRAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS

Regulations for Judges Training Conformation

2024/2025

Self-Funded Adult Education Program

General

1. The Rules and Regulations of the Dogs Queensland Judges Training Program (JTP) are amended from time to time; such amendments are published by DQ. These Dogs Queensland Regulations for the Rules but also accommodate necessities required by the diverse nature of metropolitan and regional Queensland. These regulations are effective immediately.

2. Aspiring judges and all interested members are reminded that membership in the JTP confers no automatic right to become a Judge. Dogs Queensland will consider the suitability and behaviour of all applicants entering the JTP. Becoming a Judge requires successful completion of the syllabus following which the aspiring Judge must earn the privilege to be registered and acknowledged as a Judge. This privilege may be withdrawn should circumstances warrant and after all facts have been considered.

3. An essential requirement of acceptance, and continued progression, in the JTP (including applications for both theory and practical examinations) is a demonstrated significant and continued participation in the management or operation of an affiliated Dogs Queensland Club or Committee. Trainees must complete the “Club Activity” form each year. This documentation MUST accompany ALL applications; including first time applicants, theory examinations and practical examinations, irrespective of the number of Championship Show groups a Judge may hold. Applications which do not include this mandatory documentation will be rejected unless appropriately documented reasons for extenuating circumstances are approved by the Conformation Judges Committee (CJC).

4. The Dogs Queensland JTP is available for eligible members of Dogs Queensland who are residents of Queensland. Queensland residents who were previously members of other ANKC Affiliates and

were previously in an equivalent ANKC recognised training program, will be recognised under a reciprocal agreement, provided all requirements are fulfilled.

5. Any persons who were previously resident in another State or Territory (and members of that State or Territory), and were not in the Judges Training Program, and who are now bona-fide residents of Queensland, may apply to enter the JTP upon providing a letter from their previous controlling body showing they comply with the entr y requirements for Aspiring Judges.

6. The JTP is a continuous program. Persons who are unable to continue in the system due to illness, injur y or issues of a personal nature, should apply in writing to the CJC for a leave of absence for a suitable period.

7. Members are not permitted to accept judging appointments or sign contracts to judge, until official written notification from Dogs Queensland, advising their judging status, has been received by them.

8. A member who has previously held Championship Show status may apply for reinstatement. Where a period of absence has occurred from the Judges List, reinstatement will be considered only after the member concerned has passed 90% of an Open Book examination on a number of the major breeds in the Group(s), plus those breeds which have been introduced by the ANKC during their absence. In some instances, particularly for longer periods of absence, the CJC may require a practical assessment which would be conducted using similar procedures to the Practical Examination as described in Regulation 38, and at a date to be determined by the CJC. Should the candidate fail the assessment, they would be added to the Open Show Panel and be required to fulfil the requirements as set out in Regulations 17-21.

9. A member who has previously held an Open show status and has previously passed the theory exams for a Group may apply for reinstatement to the Open show panel. To then proceed they must complete all the requirements of the current Group Training Program.

JUDGES’ TRAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS

10. Any Trainee Judge or Aspiring Judge who is found to have engaged in unsportsmanlike or unprofessional behaviour or has breached the Dogs Queensland Rules or the Dogs Queensland Code of Ethics or the Board of Dogs Queensland Judges Code of Ethics, or is not fulfilling training regulations, will be held accountable and may be suspended or removed from the JTP and / or the Judges Panel.

11. The CJC, in determining whether to remove or suspend, will consider all the facts and will provide their recommendation to the Board of Dogs Queensland.

12. A right of appeal is available, and an appeal may be made to the Board of Dogs Queensland in writing removal or suspension.

35. Each candidate and assessor will receive a score sheet. Candidates are to make no markings on these score sheets until the examination commences.

36. The Hands-on examination will consist of two breed classes and one mixed breed class. Each breed class will be comprised of a different breed and consist of 5 or 6 dogs of either sex in that breed. The mixed breed class will consist of 5 or 6 dogs of different breeds and of either sex (excluding the two breeds previously used in the two breed classes, unless exceptional circumstances require the re-judging of either breed as part of the mixed class). In all classes, dogs must be over the age of 6 months.

37. The examination will be conducted by 3 accredited ssessors appointed by the CJC. A fourth person, also appointed by the CJC, will act as Chairperson and Coordinator for the ring.

h. Questions asked during the Hands-on Examination, may be taken from current ANKC Breed Standards.

i. Assessors will record on the score sheet comments relating to each candidate. This must be completed whether passing or failing a candidate.

j. After all candidates have been examined on the two breed classes and one mixed breed class, the candidates will be excused from the examination ring.

k Assessors will then independently complete the assessment form, awarding a pass or fail grade to each candidate on the two breed classes and one mixed breed class, with valid written reasons.

‘It’s not a dog, it’s a Puli’!

HISTORY

The Puli is the ancient sheepdog of Hungary, introduced by the migration of the Magyars from Central Aisa over 1000 years ago. Records show Pulik working on the plains of the Puszta as early as the 9th century. Some believe the Puli existed as a working sheepdog for thousands of years prior to this – perhaps as early as 4500 BC.

Nomadic shepherds of the Hungarian plains valued their herding dogs, paying as much as a year’s salary for a Puli. To survive the Puli had to be physically sound and mentally capable, agile and willing to work.

The Puli’s coat protected the dog while living outdoors without amenities. He was typically sheared in the spring with the sheep, allowing the coat ample time to regrow before winter. The Puli was used both as a drover as the shepherd moved the flock over many many miles up into the plains and as a herder for the large herds of sheep (often several hundred).

The Puli was also used as a general farm dog, herding cattle and protecting the farm. Their presence and protective instincts helped deter predators, making them invaluable assets to Hungarian shepherds.

The Puli's role in Hungarian culture goes beyond practical utility. They are celebrated in Hungarian folklore and literature, often portrayed as loyal and courageous companions. Shepherds prized their Pulik for their ‘quick intelligence, speed and turn-on-a-dime agility’. This admiration lives on in Hungary today, where citizens still proudly claim ‘It’s not a dog, it’s a Puli’!

Hungarian culture has a deep connection with the Puli breed, reflecting its historical significance and enduring presence within the country's traditions. Here’s how the Puli is intertwined with Hungarian culture:

Symbol of Hungarian Heritage – The Puli is considered a national treasure of Hungary, cherished for its role as a symbol of the country’s rural heritage and pastoral traditions. Its distinctive appearance and working abilities are celebrated in

Hungarian folklore, literature, and art.

Historical Role – For centuries, Pulis played a vital role in Hungarian agriculture as versatile herding dogs. They were valued for their agility, intelligence, and ability to work independently in the challenging terrain and climate of the Hungarian plains.

Folklore and Legend – Pulis have been immortalized in Hungarian folklore and legends, often depicted as loyal and courageous companions. Stories of their bravery and loyalty to their owners have been passed down through generations, reinforcing their status as iconic figures in Hungarian culture.

Cultural Depictions – Pulis have been featured in various forms of Hungarian art, including paintings, sculptures, and literature. Their unique corded coat and distinctive appearance make them recognizable symbols of Hungarian identity and rural life.

Mark and Josie Haseldine

Traditional Events and Festivals – In Hungary, traditional events and festivals often feature Pulis, where they participate in demonstrations of herding skills or are showcased in breed parades. These events highlight their historical role and cultural significance within the community.

Modern Day Appreciation – While the agricultural landscape has evolved, Pulis continue to hold a special place in the hearts of Hungarians. They are admired for their intelligence, playful nature, and loyalty as beloved companions and family pets.

Breed Preservation – Efforts to preserve the purity and characteristics of the Puli breed are an important aspect of Hungarian cultural heritage. Breeders and enthusiasts are dedicated to maintaining breed standards and ensuring that Pulis continue to embody the traits that have defined them for centuries.

And today despite their herding background, Pulik can adapt well to home or apartment living. They retain the intelligence, ability and willingness to work that endeared them to the shepherds of long ago, and they retain a strong herding instinct and desire to work. The herding

and protective instincts are a dominant factor in its temperament.

BREED CHARACTERISTICS

The Puli (pronounced Poo-lee, plural is Pulik) is a herding breed known for their intelligence, energy, resourcefulness and high sprits. There is no mistaking them for another breed if their profuse coat is allowed to cord naturally often reaching the ground. He is best described as ‘mop-like’ or a ‘shag rug’ whether corded or brushed. He is very agile. Those who have seen a Puli working a flock of sheep are amazed by his dazzling footwork and flying coat.

TEMPERAMENT

The Puli is faithful and extremely intelligent, a deeply loyal dog, wary of strangers and often a clown for his masters, bubbling with an energy he can scarcely control at times. They are vigilant and will alert their owners to any potential threats or unusual activities. Socialisation is critical for Puli and all dogs. Getting the dog out and about to as many places you can from the first time you bring your Puli home will payoff in the long term –you will have a well socialised dog that will love to

always be with you and your family. With a happy, playful temperament, the Puli becomes extremely devoted to his master and family. Puli will often show great sensitivity to the human’s moods and feelings, actively communicating empathy. But most of the time, the adult Puli likes to play games and have fun. Pulik keep their puppyhood attitude nearly their whole lives.

COAT AND GROOMING

The most distinguishing feature of the Puli is his coat. The Puli isn’t born corded. A puppy puli coat is dense and wavy. The Puli coat is double, thick and heavy. The undercoat starts to come in around 9- 12months of age. The undercoat is woolly and the outer coat is coarse and wavy. The combination of the two types of hair forms naturally into cords that give the Puli his unique appearance. A fully corded coat can take five years to reach the ground. If you choose to keep your Puli in a brushed coat (no cords), then you will require to brush the coat weekly, or it will naturally start to form cords. Cords do not come undone when a Puli is bathed. You need to wash and dry the coat regularly. You must ensure the dog is dried thoroughly or it will smell like a wet carpet. The Puli's unique corded coat

isn't just for show — it served a practical purpose in their working environment. The cords protected them from the elements, including rain, snow, and thorny vegetation. Your breeder will be able to help you with grooming advice.

WHAT DO THEY EXCEL AT?

The Puli is one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs. He has been bred for centuries to be an independent thinker and problem solver and expected to work on his own initiative. He is a willing worker and can be trained easily to follow commands and directions. They love performance sports like Herding, SprintDog, Fly Ball, Rally O, Agility, Obedience, Tracking, Scent Work, Dances With Dogs (DWD) and Tricks. They also excel at therapy work, due to their intelligence and gentle demeanour. Pulis are highly responsive to commands and cues from their owners. They have a keen understanding of human gestures and tones, making them adept at communication activities. Contact your State Member Body for more information.

COLOUR

Puli come in a variety of colours, the overall

Diana
Andersen Photography

appearance must be that of solid colour. Black, Grey, Fawn (known as Fako in Hungary) and White.

SIZE

The Puli is a medium sized dog when fully grown averaging 37 – 44cm in height at the withers. 10 – 15kg in weight. They are agile and have a compact body structure which enables them to move swiftly and effectively.

BEST SUITED

Pulik make devoted companions for active families, couples and single people who can provide them with the attention, exercise and mental stimulation. The Puli loves their daily walks, socialisation and free run. They are independent thinkers and can be assertive, which is a trait that helped them excel as herding dogs. A Puli thrives on plenty of mental stimulations. There are many interactive games / activities you can do with you Puli which will challenge their minds and bodies.

HEALTH

Average life expectancy is 12-16 years. Pulki are usually robust, hardy and not prone to particular disease or problems. You should look for a Dogs Australia registered breeder who health tests parents of puppies – this includes Hip and Elbow Scoring, Patella Luxation and Degenerative Myelopathy testing.

POPULARITY

Whilst not among the most popular dog breeds globally, Pulik have a dedicated following of enthusiasts who appreciate their unique appearances, intelligence and loyal nature.

The Puli is a breed with a rich history as a herding dog, combined with a lively personality and distinctive appearance. They make loving companions for active families who can provide them with the attention and stimulation they need to thrive.

Canine Ehrlichiosis

With the Ekka rolling around again and the movement of dogs within and between States and Territories, it is timely to remind members of the existence of E.canis and what we can all do to protect our dogs and prevent the spread of this disease.

Canine monocytic ehrlichiosis (CME), is a bacterial infection in dogs which is caused by a tick-borne bacterium Ehrlichia canis (E. canis). E. canis is an obligate intracellular rickettsia like bacterium that infects monocytes. The incubation period is 1-3 weeks after a tick bite. Infection may result in severe and, particularly if untreated, lifethreatening disease. There is no vaccine available.

The primary vector is the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) – not the paralysis tick. Ticks acquire E. canis by feeding, in the larval stage, on infected canids. Once infected, the infection is transmitted by nymphs or adults when feeding.

Domesticated, wild and roaming populations in the family Canidae (dogs, dingoes and foxes) are the reservoir hosts.

It is also possible for humans to be infected after being bitten by an infected tick. The likelihood of human infection is dependent on prevalence in the dog population.

Disease Phases

There are 3 phases of infection:

• Acute (3-4 weeks)

• Sub-clinical (months to years)

• Chronic (months to years)

There are a range of non-specific clinical signs in both acute and chronic phases.

Acute phase:

This phase may include the following clinical signs:

• Fever

• Lethargy

• Enlarged lymph nodes

• Weight loss

• Discharge from the nose and eyes

• Bleeding from the nose

• Bleeding under the skin (which may appear as small spots, patches or bruising).

This phase typically lasts for 2-4 weeks.

The severity of symptoms can vary considerably between dogs.

In countries where E. canis is well established and has become endemic, death is usually rare during this phase and most dogs recover although some may remain sub-clinical carriers for months or even years. However, in Australia, where the disease is spreading in a relatively naïve population, it is quite likely that infection will result in severe illness and high morbidity.

Sub-clinical phase

Dogs will either:

• Clear the infection

• Remain infected (although asymptomatic)

• Progress to a chronic form of the disease.

Some dogs may be infected but show no clinical signs. Others may progress from the acute phase and become carriers. These dogs may still be infected but present no symptoms. The bacteria may sequester in haaematopoietic tissues and remain (in hiding) in the spleen, bone marrow and white blood cells. If the dog’s immune system is compromised, this will squeeze the spleen and the bacteria may be released.

Accordingly, the disease can remain latent and the dog may still be infected for months or even years.

Chronic phase

The chronic form of the disease may not manifest itself for months or even years.

Clinical signs are similar to the acute phase but are likely to be more severe. These may include:

• Fever

• Weakness

• Weight loss / rapid wasting regardless of apparently adequate nutrition

• Bleeding disorders

• Pale mucous membranes

• Eye abnormalities (corneal oedema)

• Muscle pain (poly arthritis) stiff gait

• Neurologial abnormalities

Blood tests often show severely low platelets, low white cells and anaemia.

Chronic ehrlichiosis has a grave prognosis, regardless of treatment. As infection progresses, this mas may result in a range of immune complex issues due to excessive immunoglobulin production. However, this increase in antibodies is ineffective against the disease at the late stage of chronic disease.

This form of the disease is usually fatal and further treatment is likely to have a low prospect of success. Disease progression will lead to increasing severity in haematological abnormalities. Infected dogs may also be more susceptible to secondary infections.

How does the disease spread?

Transmission does not occur directly between dogs (except in the case of blood transfusion).

As the disease is not directly transmissible between dogs (by natural means), it is spread by:

• Actively infected ticks infecting uninfected dogs in new locations;

• Acutely infected dogs infecting tick populations in new locations;

• Sub-clinical and chronically infected dogs infecting tick populations in new locations.

What can you do to protect your dogs and your kennel?

Prevention is by far better than cure.

Prevention

The level of precaution you should take depends

upon the prevalence of E. canis in that area or potential exposure to dogs from an area in which E. canis is present.

If you are travelling, avoid taking your dog(s) into known or potential infested areas unless absolutely necessary and, if doing so, ensure that you take appropriate tick protection measures to cover the entire risk period. If moving a dog from a potentially infected area, ensure that the dog is tick treated at least 2-4 weeks prior to travel in order to ensure that you do not transmit the disease to an area which is currently clear. Keep an eye on State government regulations before leaving an area or crossing State lines (as these may change).

If you are located in or travelling through a tick area:

• Healthy dogs should be on an effective tick control program

• Keep grass short and avoid taking dogs into or in close proximity to potentially tick infected areas such as bush and long grass, particularly in coastal areas

• Avoid areas and contact with free ranging dogs

• Inspect your dogs daily for ticks and for 5-6 days after being in tick infected areas

• Check bedding and treat with anti-parasite sprays if in a tick area

The prevention of ehrlichiosis requires a different strategy to paralysis tick. For paralysis tick, it is important to kill any tick quickly if it attaches. In the case of ehrlichiosis, you need to prevent the dog from being bitten in the first place. It is therefore important to take precautionary measures to repel ticks in order to prevent the tick from attaching at all. Accordingly, a combination of topical and oral tick prevention is best to deal with the threat from different ticks.

There are a number of tick protection products currently available on the market:

• Collars: Seresto, Preventic, Kiltix;

• Spot-on treatments: Advantix, Frontline.

Seresto and Advantix have been experimentally shown to prevent transmission of E. canis to dogs. Oral products such as Simparica, NexGard and Bravecto do not prevent the dog from being bitten. So, while these products provide good efficacy against paralysis tick, they are only a second line of defence against E. canis.

Accordingly, a combination of topical and oral tick prevention is recommended to deal with the threat from this disease. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the dog is not left unprotected by missing or running late with treatment.

Treatment

The earlier the infection is diagnosed and treated, the better. PCR and ELISA tests provide the most accurate diagnosis together with comprehensive blood tests. Blood tests will usually pick up abnormalities such as low platelets and mild anaemia.

Affected dogs will require veterinary treatment. It is possible to treat ehrlichiosis with Doxycycline (a tetracycline anti-biotic). Most other antibiotics are ineffective against E.canis. Note that this treatment is not appropriate for dogs under 6 months of age. Usually, a minimum of 4 weeks will be required. Shorter treatment periods may result in sub-clinical carriers. Seronegative PCR tests will indicate if the infection has cleared.

Dogs may be treated and appear to recover. However, there is no straightforward test to monitor treatment success.

Presence of E. canis in Australia

E. canis occurs worldwide, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The first confirmed detection of E. canis in Australia was in the Kimberley region in Western Australia in May 2020. Although anecdotal reports indicate that E. canis may have been present in Australia considerably earlier than this, these are not confirmed cases. E. canis has since been detected in dogs in Western Australia, all of the Northern Territory, South Australia and Northern Queensland including the following LGAs: Mt Isa, Doomadgee, Cloncurry and Carpentaria. Infection was first detected in Townsville in December 2022 and also subsequently. Infection has also been detected in dogs as far South as Brisbane as a consequence of dogs travelling through infected areas in Northern Queensland and interstate. Accordingly, it is highly likely that the disease may be significantly more widespread in Queensland.

“Dogs Queensland is funding research by James Cook University into the prevalence of this disease in North Queensland (being the front line in our State)”.

Movement of Dogs

Human assisted movement of dogs is considered the most likely means of spreading E. canis. Wherever the tick is present, the disease has the potential to spread. The following map shows the distribution of brown dog tick in Australia.

Preventing spread of E.canis

Preventing the spread of this disease is particularly challenging due to a number of factors:

• Not all infected dogs will show symptoms. Dogs that have lived or travelled through infested areas may have become subclinically infected without the owner’s knowledge. So, many of these dogs will not be diagnosed or treated.

• The chronic phase may not develop for months or even years. Because of this time delay, the connection between travel and development of clinical signs may be difficult to establish.

• Inadequate public awareness of the disease and necessary precautionary measures.

• Lack of compliance. Despite warnings, not all owners will take effective precautions. Movement of infected dogs, associated with travel or rehoming, into areas where brown dog ticks exist but E.canis is not currently active is likely to occur.

• The clinical and geographical movement history of dogs may not be disclosed or made clear upon transfer of the dog to a new location (whether temporary or permanent) and to the new owner / carer and treating veterinarian. This is further complicated if rehoming involves multiple changes in location and / or ownership.

Unsplash

• Inadequate biosecurity measures from the outset. Some jurisdictions have imposed biosecurity measures. However, there has been insufficient obligations imposed upon individuals and organisations to disclose the health status of infected dogs to new owners / carers.

So, in order to prevent transmission, it is necessary to take precautionary measures. Stringent use of a repel and kill tick product in order to prevent tick attachment in the first place is required for dogs that live in or travel through brown dog tick infested areas. With movement of dogs around the country, it is otherwise highly likely that this disease will become widespread. It is up to all of us to do our part in preventing the spread of this disease.

If you are travelling, avoid taking your dog(s) into known or potential infested areas unless absolutely necessary and, if doing so, ensure that you take appropriate tick protection measures to cover the entire risk period. Keep an eye on State government regulations before leaving an area or crossing State lines (as these may change).

If moving a dog from a potentially infected area, ensure that the dog is tick treated at least 2-4 weeks prior to travel in order to ensure that you do not transmit the disease to an area which is currently clear of the disease. Preferably, maintain a record of treatment for 6 months.

If acquiring a dog from a tick infected area, check that it has been treated for ticks and for how long prior to being transported. Consider conducting a blood test (either prior to transport or shortly after arrival and keep separate until results are received) in order to protect the rest of the dogs in the kennel.

DOGS QUEENSLAND DOG OF THE YEAR COMMITTEE Championship Shows

Thank you to all the exhibitors who ventured out and enjoyed the cooler climate of our winter fund raising shows in support of our 2024 Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year events to be held in December 2024.

Numbers were lower than desired even though the interstate panel was selected to draw an entry with most of the panel not having judged their groups locally for some time. I’m sure those who attended enjoyed themselves as the feedback and comments given to me about the shows were very positive – comments such as: “these are being conducted in such a great atmosphere”, “it was great to see everyone smiling and socialising” and also “we loved the extra commentary at general specials, we knew exactly who won, what was going on and when to be at the ring”.

On a transparent note, the lower attendance may unfortunately affect the DOTY, POTY and NOTY finals later this year with less than required funds raised, but the PR and Marketing team are determined to try their best to provide you with an ongoing finale to end the year.

Congratulations to all the winners at every level of the show – classes through to General Specials. Thank you to all the hard workers behind the scenes of the shows – you do a great job and it is very much appreciated.

I hope you all enjoy these lovely images from the weekend and we look forward to seeing you at Dog of the Year.

Breeder Alert –Puppy Scam Websites

Dogs Queensland has become increasingly aware of Puppy Scam Websites using legitimate Dogs Queensland Registration and Queensland Breeder Identification (BIN) Numbers to sell puppies. Dogs Queensland Registration Numbers are obtained from legitimate websites such as Dogs Queensland or DogzOnline, where they are displayed as required by the Queensland Government.

Please see the Queensland Dog Breeder Fact Sheets for regulations and guidelines for Queensland Dog Breeders.

An example of a typical scam is:

• A Dogs Queensland Membership number is lifted from current advertising on the internet.

• The scammer researches and obtains personal details of the breeder including name, suburb, prefix.

• A domain name similar to the Kennel prefix is registered on an offshore registry.

• Once the breeder has ceased advertising the litter of puppies a new website is published.

• No physical address or phone numbers are advertised on the website.

• The seller avoids permitting you to physically see the cyber puppy and only sends non genuine pictures.

• The seller insists on only accepting payment by a crypto currency or a funds transfer.

As a breeder what can you do to avoid being an unknowing victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Regularly Google search the internet for websites using a similar Domain Name as your Prefix.

• Put a warning notification in your online advertising to alert buyers to check any website they are looking at is legitimate.

• Encourage puppy buyers to verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland and make direct inperson contact with you.

• Ensure puppy buyers check communications are made with verified contact details.

• Encourage puppy buyers to meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

As a buyer what can you do to avoid being a victim of a Puppy Scam:

• Verify breeder information with Dogs Queensland.

• Ensure communications are made to verified contact details.

• Meet the puppy and breeder before handing over payments.

• If paying online, use a credit card or PayPal where you have a degree of buyer protection.

• Check website is an established site with a website security certificate.

• Avoid websites without physical address or phone numbers.

• A sk for proof, including ANKC registration papers and veterinary health records for any puppy.

Importantly you should report any suspect sites or advertising to the ACCC ScamWatch website. Please let us know about any suspect websites too by contacting Dogs Queensland on 3252 2661 or by email at info@dogsqueensland.org.au.

Chambers of the Black Hand, Lightning Ridge

Not the normal place I would find different dog breeds – 12 metres down in an underground mine!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting an underground art gallery in Lightning Ridge, New South Wales called Chambers of the Black Hand. It is a sprawling opal cave featuring over 800 sculptures and carvings contained within 26 chambers, all hand-carved into the sandstone walls.

The sculptures were created by artist and opal miner Ron Canlin who purchased the Black Hand mine in 1982 with the intention of making his fortunes mining for black opal. This didn’t end up being the case and more money was spent on expenses than what the opal mine produced. He then turned to his artistic side and began his journey of creating the Chamers of the Black Hand.

Over 12 years, Ron used his artistic talent to create sculptures to capture the minds of young and old with each chamber having a different theme using nothing but a jackhammer, various kitchen utensils (butter knife), and a pickaxe. In 1997, Ron opened the Chambers of the Black Hand mine to the public to share his wonderful journey of creating a

masterpiece. He is now 84 years old and still visits the mine from time to time.

Some of the Chamber themes included:

• Australian Fauna

• Last Supper

• Space

• Michaelangelo

• Lion of Lucerne

• Egypt

• Africa

• Superheros

• Famous Faces

• Elvis

The last chamber had a mixture of dog carvings and paintings – How many breeds can you identify? Boxer, Australian Cattle Dog, Labrador Retriever, Greyhound, Basett Hound, Saluki, Dalmatian, Beagle, Deerhound, Bernese Mountain Dog, German Shepherd, Yorkshire Terrier, Pug, English Cocker Spaniel, Bloodhound.

State and National

Dances With Dogs and the Inaugural Trick Dog Tests

FRIDAY 28 JUNE 2024 – SUNDAY 30 JUNE 2024 DOGS QUEENSLAND SHOW GROUNDS, DURACK

– Coral Pethers

It was with much excitement and anticipation that Judges, Stewards and Handlers arrived at Durack on Friday 28 June 2024 for the third State Dances With Dogs competition. There were 40 entries with some handlers travelling down from as far away as the Atherton Tableland, Cairns and Townsville. The weather was perfect and with the ring enclosed by a pretty white picket fence the event kicked off to a great start.

There were many success stories and happy handlers who went home with beautiful trophies, sashes and goodies from our fantastic sponsors. As well, all handlers, judges and workers received a gift bag full of fun products. Thank you to our

Judges, Mrs Loretta Rabbitt, Ms Ann Shannon and Mrs Coral Pethers.

Saturday morning, 29 June 2024, saw everyone return for the third National Dances With Dogs competition. Again, the trophies, sashes and goodies from our sponsors were on display ready to reward those whose dogs performed their best on the day. A big thank you must go to Dogs Queensland, Plush Puppy, Antinol and Royal Canin and all the individual class sponsors.

Our Judges were a mix of local and interstate judges and all expressed how much they enjoyed seeing the routines performed. Thank you to Mrs Loretta Rabbitt, Mr Trevor Telford and Mrs Coral Pethers.

Late afternoon hosted the Inaugural State Trick Dog Tests with over 90 dogs entered. Our judges were local, from far north and interstate. A big thank you to Mrs Loretta Rabbitt, Ms Meade Oswald, Mrs Barbara Murfet and Mr Lionel Blumel. There was some excellent work on display and many handlers and their dogs went home with that very important piece of paper – the qualification certificate and a qualie ribbon. Our sponsors were once again there to support our special event.

Sunday morning, 30 June 2024, saw the climax of an exciting weekend and the culmination of many months of work with the Inaugural National Trick Dog Tests. The sun was shining and the picture across the rings of the dogs performing their tricks

in style was truly exciting to see. Thank you to our National Judges, Mrs Loretta Rabbitt, Ms Meade Oswald, Mrs Daphne Sellwood and Mrs Mechalle Anderson.

After three days of events all involved were looking forward to putting their feet up but the buzz at presentations only proved how successful it had all been and how much everyone had enjoyed themselves. All who participated, whether it was as a worker, Judge or handler, should congratulate themselves on an event that did the two sports, Dogs Queensland and our wonderful dogs proud.

MULTIDISCIPLINARY CHAMPION SWEEPSTAKES 2024

At the June 2024 Royal Canin Carnival held at Durack, the Multidisciplinary Sweepstakes were again offered as a feature of the FCI show. Judged under FCI rules by Mr Shamil Kurmaev (WA), the Multidisciplinary Champion Sweepstakes showcased both form and function for those breeds entered.

What is a Multidisciplinary Champion?

To be recognised as a multidisciplinary champion, an exhibit at a minimum must be eligible for the title of Dual Champion under Dogs Australia regulations (i.e., gained a sporting discipline prefix title), although the title of “dual champion” itself need not have been applied for.

The Dual Champion title, along with subsequent multidisciplinary titles such as Triple Champion and Dual Grand Champion, are the most difficult titles to attain. These are the only titles that certify that the dog has sufficient breed type to earn a show championship and the sporting aptitude to earn a sporting championship – a rare feat for any breed!

To attain a Dual Championship, a dog must be eligible for a Conformation Championship:

• Champion (Ch, Neut Ch)

• Grand Champion (Grand Ch, Neut Grand Ch)

• Supreme Champion (Sup Ch)

In addition to a recognised Dogs Australia sporting discipline Championship title, such as:

• Obedience Champion or Grand Champion (O.Ch, O.Gr.Ch)

• Rally Champion (R.Ch)

• Agility and Jumping Champion (Ag Ch)

• Tracking Champion or Grand Champion (T.Ch, T Gr Ch)

• Track and Search Champion or Grand Champion (TS.Ch, TS Gr Ch)

• Scent Work (SW Ch)

• Herding Champion, Grand Champion or Versatility Champion (HCH, GRHCH, VHCH, VHCHX)

• Dances With Dogs (DWD) Champion or Grand

Champion (FS.Ch, HTM.Ch, FS.Gr.Ch, HTM. Gr.Ch)

• Lure Coursing Champion (FCH)

• Retrieving Champion or Grand Champion (R.T.Ch, Gr.R.T.Ch)

• Earth Dog Champion or Grand Champion (ED. Ch, ED.Gr.Ch)

In rare instances, dogs can be awarded the title of Triple Champion (Tri Ch), Dual Grand Champion (Dual Gr Ch), and potentially beyond.

Shows Galore in Zone

2

Remember to show in General Specials for the classes you have won in group

Well haven’t these past few months gone quickly! Winter will soon be over and we’ll be back to some lovely warmer weather before we know it. These current cooler times have been great for those larger breeds and breeds with abundant coats to exhibit in.

The cooler weather hasn’t stopped the shows from rolling through with some great events held in dog sports and conformation. This time of year, even though the evenings are crisp, the days pose lovely weather to enjoy outdoor activities and events with our wonderful K9’s at a temperature that really does suit a lot of breeds to enjoy their day out more.

An array of Agricultural shows together with all breeds clubs and sporting clubs have certainly kept us all busy and enjoying our respective sports. This leads me to talk about a few rules and regs that need to be remembered, not just in our zone, but across the state.

Recently it is becoming increasingly popular to leave the conformation shows early on Sunday. I gather this is to get on the road and home if you have travelled a great distance prior to your participation in general specials without withdrawing your dog for a valid reason to the Show Manager.

Rule 70.10 should be remembered – it is also

courteous to the club, ring steward and the judge adjudicating the General Specials Awards that day. Clubs do not want to have to start withholding CC’s from exhibitors who do not provide notification of their intention to withdraw.

AMENDMENT TO RULE 70.10;

With the exception of dogs eligible for Best in Show, Runner Up in Show, Opposite Sex of Show, Best Neuter in Show and Runner Up Neuter in Show, dogs eligible for the remainder of General Specials may be withdrawn provided the exhibitor obtains the permission of the Event Manager or, where there is no Event Manager, the President of the body holding such Exhibition and personally notifies the respective Ring Steward in charge of the Group in which the dog was entered and judged. Dogs eligible for Champion of Show, Runner Up in Show, Opposite Sex of Show, Best Neuter in Show and Runner Up Neuter in Show that fail to compete for these awards will forfeit the Challenge/Neuter Certificate and may incur a penalty as the Committee may deem fit (1/1/24)

On the flip side … did you win over others that perhaps may have been willing to stay and show their dog in those general specials classes? We all enter with the intent to show our dogs to the classes we achieve, so how about we do the right thing and do that. We are losing people in the sport for an array of reasons, how about we don’t let this be one of those reasons.

Clubs here in Zone 2 are doing a fabulous job of finalising their shows in a timely manner on Sundays for everyone to travel home safely – it’s their duty of care to you. They rely on a mix of Zone 1, 2 and 3 exhibitors to ensure their shows are well attended and cover the costs to have those shows for your participation, enjoyment and wins … no matter where you come from. How about we all stay and support general specials – you never know, you might win and go home with a big smile rather than a frustrated frantic drive home!

Do you know... Rule 21: Obligation To Register

21.1 A member who breeds a litter of dogs, the parents of which are registered or eligible for registration with the CCCQ Ltd or other recognised canine controlling body must:

(1) Register such litter, including all of the living progeny in such litter at one (1) and the same time within eighteen (18) calendar months of the date of whelping or prior to sale or rehoming (see Rule 28). No litter will be registered after twelve (12) months of age without the approval of the CCCQ Ltd;

(2) Comply with CCCQ Ltd Rules and correctly complete all forms required by the CCCQ Ltd;

(3) Pay such fees as are determined from time to time by the CCCQ Ltd. A standard fee will be set for registrations received by the office on a date within four (4) months of the date of whelping and a higher fee for registrations received by the office on a date between four (4) and six (6) months or between six (6) and twelve (12) months of the date of whelping;

(4) Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy with the breeder’s name as part owner, an Agreement signed by the purchaser of the puppy is to be attached to the application to register the litter. Only official CCCQ Ltd Partnership Agreement forms are to be used;

(5) Where the breeder wishes to register a puppy on the Limited Register, an Official CCCQ Ltd Limited Register Agreement statement from the purchaser stating that the implications of the Limited Register are understood is to be attached to the application; and

(6) A breeder may, at time of registration on the General Register, endorse registration ”Not to be exported”.

Rates Guide 2024

THE ULTIMATE DOG GROOMING BRUSHES IN THE WORLD.

REGULAR PIN BRUSH

WOODEN PIN BRUSH

A brilliant grooming brush for all coat types & a favourite for puppies. 100% anti-static natural wooden pins smooth the coat and prevent flyaways. They delicately loosen knots and reduce pulling on the coat to prevent breakage while massaging the skin to revitalise natural lustre.

Ideal for grooming all coat types. Perfect for most coats that require a pin brush for drying, refreshing a coat or maintenance brushing. Ideal for blow-drying and particularly necessary on coated breeds.

EXTRA LONG PIN BRUSH

LONG PIN BRUSH

Popular grooming brush for many full coated or longer coated breeds that require a slightly longer pin length to enable efficiency and ease of brushing and drying. An ideal brush for blow-drying many breeds.

A brush specifically designed for dogs with that extra-long coat length and ideal for very long flowing coated breeds. The 35mm rounded polished pins enable ease of brushing and drying of extra-long coat types.

THICK PIN BRUSH

A pin brush with thicker pins for those thick, dense, and hard to get through coats Many breeds have coats that don’t allow a “normal” pin brush to efficiently brush and dry. This thick pin allows the pins to penetrate these coats to ensure the coat roots to coat tips are correctly and thoroughly brushed.

ANTI-STATIC PORCUPINE BRUSH

A finishing/styling brush for softer to a lighter density double coats Porcupine pins will remove tangles and loose coat. Dialon pins easily get through the coat while the 100% black boar bristles have a gentle yet smoothing effect of the coat. The perfect finishing brush to use on ¾ dry coats, maximising contact with the coat to finish to the dry style and result you require. This brush has the ability to flatten, straighten and reduce wave to coats when drying.

SOFT SLICKER BRUSH

100% PURE BRISTLE BRUSH

This is your soft, delicate and silky coat type brush, yet also perfect using on shorter coated breeds for a smoothing and polishing Suitable for all breeds and essential for smooth or short coated breeds. The best brush for gentle finishing.

Our Ultimate Soft Slicker is brilliant in abolishing loose hair, de-matting and individualising all coats of various types and lengths It can easily get through the densest of coats with a resulting finish and hair separation to the coat is like no other slicker. The softness of this slicker allows the perfect finish when drying or brushing on multiple coat types. The very best slicker on the market. Used & trusted by top winning show dog’s owners and handlers worldwide.

POWDER

Designed for applying powders to Show Dogs and shaped to enable groomers to place powder in hard to reach areas. Features horse-hair bristles.
