The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for December 2017 Another year is nearly at a close, and looking back at 2017 it will certainly be a year that is remembered. There has been a great deal accomplished throughout the year, with one of the major projects being the relocation of our office from Fortitude Valley to our grounds at Durack. 2018 is already shaping up to be a huge and exciting year for Dogs Queensland. Grounds Manager As many members would be aware, Dogs Queensland have a newly appointed Grounds Manager, Mr Kevin McKay. At our Board Meeting on 27th November, the Board confirmed Kev’s Employment on a Full Time basis and his details can be found on the Dog Queensland Website. His normal working days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, as well as Saturday and Sunday morning until 12:00pm. In December Kev will also be become a resident of the Caretaker’s House on the Durack Grounds. I would ask Clubs to respect his position and whilst they are welcome to contact him with legitimate concerns, any frivolous call outs may attract a call out fee that will be invoiced to the Club concerned. Dog Lovers Show On the 4th and 5th of November, Dogs Queensland was represented at the first ever Dog Lovers Show in Brisbane. The event was a real success and both days were largely supported by the general public. It was great to see so many members there to promote and represent their breeds to the general public. This is definitely an event that Dogs Queensland will be looking to become more prominently involved in for future years.

Directors' Show The annual Directors' Show will be held at Durack on the 15th of December 2017. This Show is run by the Directors as a way to give back to the members. Each of the Directors have personally donated funds to assist in the purchase of trophies and ribbons for the Show. I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the night and enjoy the free sausage sizzle put on by the Directors and Staff. Grounds Closure Members are reminded that the grounds at Durack will be closed from the 23rd of December 2017 to the 3rd of January 2018 inclusive. In closing, I wish all Directors, Members and Office Staff a Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. Shane Thomas President

Notice to advertisers The Trade Practices Act came into force on 1st October 1974. Certain provisions of the act relating to consumer protection place a heavy burden upon advertisers, advertising agents and the publishers of advertisements. In view of the obvious impossibility of our ensuring that advertisements submitted for publication comply with the act, advertisers themselves need to ensure that the provisions of the act are strictly complied with. In cases of doubt, advertisers are advised to seek legal advice before submitting advertising material.

Board Notes December 2017
(2) No Open Show Judge who is judging identical breeds may judge at Exhibitions held within a period of three (3) months of each other and within a one-hundred (100) kilometre radius of each other (not including Property Classes or Sweepstakes) without the express permission of the CCCQ Ltd prior to signing the contract.
Cyclone and Flood Disaster Assistance All Members are reminded that Dogs Queensland can provide assistance to members who are directly affected by the recent cyclone and flood events throughout Queensland. The relevant document explaining how to apply for assistance can be found on the Dogs Queensland Website.
Note that under these Open Show provisions, where a Judge is to judge at a Single Breed Open Show, this will not prevent them judging the whole of the Group to which that breed belongs to at a subsequent or prior Open Show appointment.
Sweepstakes in Zones 2 and 3 Some country Kennel Clubs have experienced difficulty in conducting Open Shows. There is a need for either Open Shows or Sweepstakes to be held for “Distance” Trainee Judges. Regional facilitators are now required to conduct 4 Sweepstakes each year – 2 during Part A lectures and 2 during Part B lectures for trainees in their area. These Sweepstakes may be for all breeds or just for the Group the trainee is studying. It is suggested that these Sweepstakes be held on “Cluster Shows” weekends to maximise numbers. Trainees are required to assist the facilitator in arranging these Sweepstakes.
Failure of an Open Show Judge to comply with this Rule may result in the cancellation of all contracts associated with the breach and/or the deletion of the numbers of dogs judged; as well as referral to the CCCQ Ltd Breaches Panel for possible disciplinary action. (3) No Judge may judge General Specials at All Breeds Championship Shows held within a period of three (3) months of each other and within a one-hundred (100) kilometre radius of each other.
Dog World Copy Deadline Please note that the Copy deadline for the February 2018 Issue will be brought forward to 19th December 2017.
Christmas Office Closure All Members are asked to please note that the Dogs Queensland Office will be closed for the Christmas holiday period from 12:00 midday on Friday 22nd December 2017 and will reopen on Wednesday 3rd January 2018.
New Rules Re Championship Show Judging Appointments These are the current Rules; 69.3
(1) No Championship Judge who is judging identical breeds may judge at Exhibitions held within a period of six (6) months of each other and within two-hundred (200) kilometres radius of each other (not including Property Classes or Sweepstakes) without the express permission of the CCCQ Ltd prior to signing the contract. Note that the two-hundred (200) kilometre radius is to include any and all appointments that are over the border in NSW.

These are the new Rules effective for all contracts signed after 1st January 2018; 69.3
(1) No Championship Judge who is judging identical breeds may judge at Exhibitions held within a period of twelve (12) months of each other and within two-hundred (200) kilometres radius of each other (not including Property Classes or Sweepstakes) without the express permission of the CCCQ Ltd prior to signing the contract. Note that the two-hundred (200) kilometre radius is to include any and all appointments that are over the border in NSW. Notes from the Conformation Judges Committee - December 2017 Once again the subject of “Ethics” has to be raised. There have been recent instances of Judges openly soliciting entries for their upcoming judging appointments and support for this practice from fellow Judges. This is unacceptable, just as soliciting for judging appointments is unacceptable. Judges have Rules and a Code of Ethics that they must follow. Failure to adhere to these rules and ethics will result in disciplinary action. Judges rules and the Judges Code of Ethics are applicable at all times, not just on the days you are actually judging. There have been several very informative lectures recently. Please take the time to attend as many of these as possible as the topics presented are interesting and informative. It was very pleasing to see so many attend Sue Huebner’s lecture on the first night of the Group 5 lectures. Always interesting and informative, the content of Sue’s lectures is beneficial to both Judges and exhibitors. Thank you to Graham Kerr for arranging this. Andrew Burt’s Seminar was held on November 18th at Durack. Despite the wet weather, there was an excellent attendance. Those people who did attend appreciated Andrew’s insight on the topics he presented. The topics covered were: • • •
How to be a Successful Trainee Judge Critiquing Judging Ethics and Social Media.
In early November, the Dog World lost one of its long time members and a tireless worker for our Judges Training Program, with the passing of All Breeds Judge Marilyn Rose. Until very recently, Marilyn had been the Coordinator for the Group One lectures. The Conformation Judges Committee would like to acknowledge the many years in which Marilyn made a significant contribution to Judges’ training. Please note that the correct email address for Vicki Schneider (Group 6 Coordinator) is: tanoshii@tanoshiikennels.com The Conformation Judges Committee is pleased to announce that Mrs Sue Hewinson has been added to our Committee. Sue is also the current Group Two coordinator. The members of the Conformation Judges Committee wish all Dogs Queensland members a safe and happy festive season. Melbourne Cup Show 2017 Wtitten by Helen Acworth Maree Kennel Club Inc once again hosted the Championship Show on Melbourne Cup day, Tuesday, 7th November, 2017. Thank you to our Judges for the Championship Show, we certainly hoped you enjoyed your day with added extras! Our Sponsor for the show was “BLACK HAWK” who have been most generous in their support of this Club for some time now. We thank them for their on going sponsorship for future shows including three shows coming up in December. Hosting the “Melbourne Cup Show” is now an annual event for Maree Kennel Club and it has become quite a Social day for everyone. Entry this year was down on previous years but the weather was great which meant a higher number of exhibitors taking part by getting dressed up in “Cup Day” attire. Judge for these “Cup Day” Specials was Ms Janet McGregor, who fitted the part well in her black and white outfit.
This year we were joined for lunch by Rob Harrison and the staff of Dogs Queensland office – we appreciate them taking the time to be part of our day. We invite everyone into the Club house to view the Cup on TV and this year there seemed to be more taking up this offer to enjoy watching the “Race” and the hospitality of the Club. A huge “thank you” to Daryl Cross for these excellent photos of winners; “Best Cup Day Outfit”, “Best Cup Day Hat” and “Best Dressed Handler and Dog”. See you all at next year’s Melbourne Cup Show! Agility Committee continues to advance the sport in Queensland Written by Rachel Bulloch he Queensland Agility SubCommittee has been ver y successful at raising money for the Queensland Agility community.
The invitation of New Zealand judges to our State A & J Trials has proven to be a great success with the number of entries increasing, especially the Interstate Competitors.
The 2010 National Agility and Jumping Trials were a great success with the QASC purchasing five sets of rubberised agility equipment for use during the most successful Nationals held to date, that equipment then was distributed to Queensland DO Clubs that had supported the QASC by holding trials at their grounds to help with the initial fundraising.
Equipment investments have included Timing gates, flexible tunnels with internal grip, sand bags, winged jumps and light weight jumps for QASC trials, and for those organisations holding trials at Durack like the Border Club of Queensland whose Nationals were held at Durack in 2014, the Cavalier Club of Queensland and the Collie
30 - December 2017
Club of Queensland have all had use of the equipment that is stored at Durack. It was therefore only right that now that Queenslanders had access to safe and modern equipment that they should also be able to access, at affordable cost, the wide array of International Instructors that have influenced our sport over the years with their handling skills, course design and training methods.

Knowing that Anne Croft would be on the Continent in 2017 it was decided to invite Anne to hold a weekend of Seminars at Durack that could be accessed by Dogs Queensland Dog Obedience Club members for a discounted rate, as the QASC were able to subsidise the Queensland Agility Community to attend this opportunity. The QASC also provided the opportunity for all Queensland Dog Obedience Clubs who train in Agility to send. A weekend in September was organised using the grounds and facilities at Durack, the weather was unusually hot, but as I write this it is teeming with rain outside. Anne Croft brought her lifetime of experience with her to provide opportunities to the attendees to see different approaches to training, course handling and specific equipment such as the weaves.
Annes personal goals for the seminars where “to help students not only improve their handling but also their communication and relationship with their dogs. I try to help them see what the dog sees.” Annes personal goals for the seminars where “to help students not only improve their handling but also their communication and relationship with their dogs. I try to help them see what the dog sees.” Over the four days many handlers attended as participants or as observers, both these opportunities offer a handler a unique experience for training. Participants all received individual support from Anne that enabled the handler to adjust their training or handling skills to be more effective and productive. Those that were observing were able to gain insights into the different solutions required for different handlers and their dogs, for as we know our dogs are not the same as the next. Denis Ferguson and MARCUS on left: Peter Haran and CAESAR on right. Vietnam 1967
Lance Corporal Denis Ferguson - Royal Australian Infantry 2nd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment Written by George Hulse ance Corporal (LCPL) Denis Ferguson was born in Carlton, Melbourne in 1948. On turning seventeen years old in late 1965, he joined the Australian Regular Army. Denis attended the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at Kapooka and graduated into the Royal Australian Infantry. Denis commenced his tracker training and was allocated a dog named MARCUS. The dog was donated by the Governor of NSW, His Excellency, Sir Roden Cutler VC. Denis and Sir Roden appeared on national television as a part of the public relations exercise in support of Australian Military Forces.

Denis was to team up with another dog handler (a doggie) and they became good mates. He was PTE Peter Haran. Denis had MARCUS and Peter had a dog named CAESAR. In May 1967, Denis, Peter and their dogs became a part of the advance element of the 2nd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) on their way to the war in South Vietnam, – to allow the dogs a period of acclimatisation before the remainder of the battalion arrived. This acclimatisation gave the dog teams ample opportunity to acclimatise and chase “dummy” tracks in the rubber. The patrol and tracking duties after the battalion arrived were fierce. On a mission operating out of a fire support patrol base way out in the bush, Denis and MARCUS were called out by chopper for tracking duty in support of an infantry platoon which had a “hot” enemy trail to follow. Denis …. ”MARCUS and I went to the platoon early in the day, picked up the trail and followed the enemy. We tracked the enemy to the point where the platoon was able to complete their mission by successfully engaging them. Then at about mid-day of that day I was picked up again by chopper to another platoon and we repeated the performance again. Another successful engagement.
34 - December 2017
At about 1500 hrs (3.00 pm) MARCUS and I were choppered to a third platoon, but this time the track was unsuccessful. At last light we returned to the fire support base. Three tracks in one day.” These tracking duties were conducted with the dog being controlled on a 12’ (3 metre) lead. The dog handler being the first soldier down the track needed a ‘cover-man’ whose job it was to protect the doggie while he concentrated on alerts from his dog should the enemy be close. The doggies needed nerves of steel and a total trust that their mate behind them would see the enemy before the enemy saw him. Trust your dog and trust your mate. Its no different to this day. Denis and Peter had a “bad day in the office”. Peter and CAESAR had just returned from a particularly nasty mission. Peter put a ground sheet on the floor and stripped his rifle for cleaning. Denis was sat at the table enjoying a mug of coffee and writing a letter to his mum. Peter finished assembling the weapon, cocked it, squeezed the trigger to ease the firing spring, and to his horror, the rifle fired. He had mistakenly replaced a full magazine on to the weapon instead of an empty one. The bullet smacked through the table narrowly missing Denis. Denis hit the floor and tipped his coffee all over the place. Peter saw the fluid and mistaking it for blood, thought that he had just shot his mate.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
Denis was not hit, and immediately tried to console Peter. In a flash the 2RAR Regimental Police (RP) were at the tent and charged Peter with firing an “accidental discharge” (a very serious offence). Peter was punished by his Commanding Officer with two weeks of punitive work, supervised by the RP.
The doggies needed nerves of steel and a total trust that their mate behind them would see the enemy before the enemy saw him. Trust your dog and trust your mate. Its no different to this day.
Denis knew from Marcus’ behaviour that there was trouble in a number of places and at close quarter and advised the platoon commander. It was confirmed that the platoon had entered an enemy minefield. The combat engineers were called for to deal with the minefield. Combat engineers from the 1st Field Squadron arrived under the command of a Captain (an engineer Troop Commander) who spoke to Denis and then deployed his Troop on mine clearing work. Denis and this Captain were to meet again by coincidence in 1986 in an RSL Club. They reminisced over that incident and the engineer officer confirmed that many Australian lives had been saved thanks to the work of the tracker dog team. In 1971 Denis returned to Australia and three years later, when his time was up with the Army, he discharged and took up civilian life. He is now retired and lives in the Sunshine Coast area of Queensland. Photo credits: Supplied by George Hulse
Denis completed thirteen months with 2RAR at Nui Dat and in June 1968, Denis said farewell to MARCUS and handed him over to Private Alvin Peterson. It was a hard separation for Denis but he had to do it. MARCUS had a lot of talent and Alvin needed that for his tour of duty. In May 1970, 2RAR was re-deployed to Vietnam for its second tour of duty and Denis returned to the war. On arrival at Nui Dat, Denis was taken to the Support Company lines where he was shown his tent. It was exactly the same tent as he lived in two years previously. Even the same bed. His platoon Sergeant took Denis to the dog kennels and said; “That’s your dog there”. Denis felt a huge wave of emotion go through him. It was MARCUS. Denis had a special whistle he had used, years previously, just for MARCUS. MARCUS heard the whistle and spun around, saw Denis and bolted for him. Denis had tears running down his face. The dog had tears running down its face. Who says dogs can’t cry? There were hugs and dog licks and the two mates were a tracker team again. One incident on his second tour with MARCUS involved an enemy minefield. Denis and MARCUS were called in to support an infantry platoon on the trail of a Viet Cong (VC) soldier who had been seen crossing a wide open field in full daylight. This was suspicious action by the VC and so the platoon spread out, Denis and MARCUS moved to the front and the dog was cast to pick up a scent. Marcus ran from here to there and gave a multitude of alerts at the end of his tracking lead.

The Ideal Exhibitor By Patricia McLeod, International All Breeds Judge I have been asked to define the ideal exhibitor. There has been such a big variation in the conduct of the present - day handlers that it is a subject worthy of comment. No longer are judges safe from a tongue lashing exhibitor in the ring. Many of the junior handlers could give lessons in handling, in dress, in manners, in deportment and of course respect for the judge. All exhibitors should be aware of the content of the governing body’s directives on the subject of ethics. Armed with this knowledge they should be able to demonstrate the required good behaviour when exhibiting. Compared with some other countries our stewarding system is without parallel. Our stewards make it so easy for exhibitors to be in the right place at the right time. There is a need for exhibitors to learn the system and to comply without dissent. There should be a readiness by the exhibitor to oblige the directives of the steward promptly. Once in the ring, the orders come from the judge, and exhibitors should have their dog well trained in order to create a good impression. During the individual examinations the handlers should refrain from speaking with the judge unless it is to answer a question like that of the age of the exhibit. Privately the exhibitor may agree or may disagree with the methods and placements of the judge but they should never voice this in the ring. Exhibitors pay for the judge’s opinion and need to accept it. After all, a judgement is merely an opinion.

Upon leaving the ring, the unhappy exhibitor should refrain from making loud and offensive comments about the judge. Any groups who gather in the assembly area to sympathise are just as guilty of very bad manners.
Our stewards make it so easy for exhibitors to be in the right place at the right time. Since I am not an aficianado of social media I cannot judge the amount of damage which is done post-show by damaging posts about shows and judges. A few have been read out to me by offended judges.
ANKC/CHEDS & PennHIP scoring
Attempts are sometimes made to avoid using judges’ names but inevitably a trail is left which is easily followed. And some of these are the work of people who should be leading by example. I know that the governing bodies have attempted to stop the character damage being done. But I have been shown examples which invite legal intervention.
