T

‌ e 20th of October 2018 saw the pinnacle‌ h of our Dog’s Qld show season, being the Qld Puppy of the Year and the Qld Dog of the Year Events, and what a truly memorable night of nights for the cream of the crop of dogs residing in Queensland this was. This was an evening where all Dog’s Qld members, exhibitors and committees came together to celebrate another remarkable year of highly contested winnings of Minor/Puppy In Show and Best In Show awards.

AUST. SUP. CH. KARHAM KNOW IT ALL HT ‘A”Z’ BSC Owner: Miss NJ Hammond Breeder: Karham GSDs

2018 DOG OF THE YEAR The POTY/DOTY Committee and the Dog’s Qld staff got to see all their dedication and hard work come to fruition, whilst the exhibitors got to feel a true sense of achievement by qualifying with their dogs and for some, a sense of nervousness and excitement all rolled into one, as well as a competitive urge to reach their final goal of the year, and win one of these prestigious awards. The grounds setup looked spectacular with lush green grass, surrounding white picket fencing adding a beautiful touch, coupled with exhibitor’s gazebos dressed up in Aussie “True Blue”. The Event Sponsors were set up inside and outside of the Judges Training Room overlooking the rings. It felt like an amazing event was about to take place. In attendance were Dog’s Qld Directors, Office Staff, Groundsmen, Stewards, Event Show Manager, Photographer, Videographer and Sponsor’s

6

Representatives, general public spectators, exhibitors and of course the most integral part of the event, dogs, dogs and more dogs. Exhibitors collected their rosette style numbers and souvenir catalogues, eager to see who the Judges were and to read their resumes. Soon after, the draws took place and as exhibit numbers were written up onto a white board, a crowd emerged with the click of phones taking photos of the draw. Then it was on with the show, where all six officiating Judges were introduced and the format for the night was explained. There were two main rings with one Judge in each, who selected their two top dogs/puppies from each of eight rounds. The remainder of exhibits from those individual rounds were given a second chance whereby they moved on to a third ring to be judged by a third Judge, who also selected their top two dogs. This achieved a top 32 dogs/puppies to go into the finals for each section of the event. The POTY section was judged first and then at the completion of this, the DOTY section was judged by the other three officiating Judges. The Judges retired to the function room for a wellearned meal, whilst pizzas and garlic bread were delivered by Domino’s, kindly donated by Show Manager and were welcomed by hungry exhibitors and event workers. Also, during this meal break, the judging of the Best Themed Gazebo and the Best Dressed Male and Female competitions took place. It was wonderful to see the amount of time and effort put in by exhibitors who participated in these competitions.A lot of fun and laughter was had by all.

After dinner, it was down to the business end of the event, where the top 32 exhibits endured a nail-biting, knock-out style competition, with three Judges doing the honours for the Puppy section

2018 PUPPY OF THE YEAR and the remaining three Judges judging the Dog Section. Throughout the rounds, the atmosphere was extremely jovial, loud and sometimes intense, with the enormous cheers from supporters and friends of the competing exhibits, right down to the final two dogs where the winners were crowned with the Titles of, “2018 Qld Puppy Of The Year Winner” and “2018 Qld Dog Of The Year Winner” respectively.

It was truly an honour to witness the fantastic sportsmanship and camaraderie between all exhibitors, the joy and willingness to please from the dogs who gave their all to their handlers and owners, and ultimately the coming together of everyone involved in the Dogworld scene. There really is nothing more like an event such as this, that brings so many different people and personalities together to enjoy our common interest, dogs. It was most certainly a night to remember and an important event that inspires all exhibitors to achieve what is the most prestigious accolade on our Dog’s Qld show calendar. Many, many thanks to everyone who put this successful Event together and made it possible, you are all to be highly commended. See you all in 2019!!!! Article written by Michelle Hammond

I have been freezing semen from animals, birds and reptiles since 1979. The first canine semen I froze was in 1983. Over the years I have heard many myths and misconceptions, including the following:

“Using frozen semen will produce abnormal offspring.” Countless numbers of animals have been bred using frozen semen with no evidence of abnormalities other than heritable defects.

“Semen frozen in pellets is better than semen frozen in straws.” This claim has not been supported with published data. The earliest method of freezing semen was by placing drops of extended semen onto a block of dry ice. The pellets could then be transferred into vials. traws were introduced in 1964 and have been used almost exclusively for all other species since then. The age of the dog and the quality of the semen that was collected and frozen is of far greater importance than what method of packaging was used.

“There is no difference in results between Transcervical insemination and surgical insemination.”

Published data shows pregnancy rates are 20% higher when transcervical insemination is performed. Another benefit of transcervical insemination is that no anaesthesia or recovery from surgery is necessary.

“Extender ‘X’ is superior to extender ‘Y’.” I have tried many extenders over the years and have concluded that there is little difference in results. The one that is used routinely and you are confident with will be the best.

“You get more progeny of one sex or the other.” What sex the progeny will be is purely chance. You may get all males, all females or any combination of the sexes. Did you know that the first reported but undocumented artificial breeding was by Arabian horse breeders in the early 1300’s and that an Italian physiologist by the name of Spallanzani was the first to have a documented case of puppies being born to artificial insemination in the year 1780? That the first semen to be successfully frozen was by Polge, Smith and Parkes in 1949? Written by John Cooper Just Genes AB Services

How can we change pet breeding and buying for the better? An enterprising cat breeder from New Zealand, Joni Walker, has come up with a plan to make puppy and kitten mills a thing of the past, and hopes to promote world-wide involvement to achieve this. She’s created a website that makes it easy for breeders to find loving homes for their animals and for pet lovers to find responsible breeders. Joni hopes the website will bring greater transparency to the breeding world. The digital world has made it easier for the unscrupulous breeder to prosper, but www.pedigree-pets.com will allow reputable breeders’ reputations to shine.

trust and confidence throughout communities. The website has only just been launched so is in its infancy. At the moment its completely free for breeders to join. Dogs Queensland and other State registrars will confirm memberships of breeders who wish to list on the website. Pedigree Pets goal is for happy, healthy, well socialised pets bred by reputable breeders to be placed into quality forever homes. Homes that understand what is involved with raising a pet, the training, the cost of food

Promoting our Durack My name is Jessica Wright. I am 29 years old and have a husband, a baby, a cat and of course a dog. I started my career in Events Marketing in 2009 fresh from a Tourism and Travel qualification and very keen to make a start in life. My first role was in a 5-star hotel in Hamilton, New Zealand working in the conference department. I absolutely loved what I did and brought that passion with me when I moved to Brisbane. I’ve worked at various other event companies until I was recently employed by Dogs Queensland as their Events Manager. Over the years I have travelled with work to places like Mackay and worked on the Queensland Mining and Engineering Exhibition. I have organised an Apartment Launch Luncheon for a large corporate company which included VIP guests. I have organised cultural themed events such as an authentic Vietnamese New Year cocktail party as well as countless other meetings, conferences, private events, seminars, roadshows, themed events and incentives. My aim at Dogs Queensland is to make Durack the number one spot for all dog related events as well as encouraging outside companies to host their events here too. I envisage having markets, open air cinemas, circus tents, rodeos, public events, birthday parties, trivia nights, scout camping and orientation, end of year parties, team building activities, school groups, dog tours for overseas visitors. Literally anything you could think of I’d love to have here. We are wanting to start seeing an integration between dog events and public events which will boost the popularity of our current dog events. We’d love to see more people interested and involved with dog events so those that are always working hard can pass their knowledge and expertise onto the next generation of dog lovers. I would like to see all dog events take off, and attract new memberships by encouraging activities and marketing to the public who already have a dog. There is a massive market for dog events, especially dog sports that hardly anyone knows about and these are what can promote new interest in Dogs Queensland encourage new memberships. We offer competitive, low-cost rates for our lawns and function rooms and if you’re thinking of holding a club meeting there are great discounts. If you are interested in hosting an event at our Sports Grounds, or have an enquiry or a suggestion, please get in touch. E: events@dogsqueensland.org.au P: (07) 3548 3409

manufacturing computer circuit boards, but now they are treating pain and inflammation in world class athletes, race horses, show and pet dogs. Lasers have been used for advanced medical applications for over 35 years. A relatively new application is the use of lasers for the relief of pain, the reduction of swelling and the healing of wounds. This is a unique use of laser light, due to the non-invasive nature of the treatment. Many laser applications use the intense energy which a laser can deliver to ablate or cut biological tissue. Therapeutic lasers, in contrast, work without any damage to tissue; the treatments are painless and quite enjoyable. Simply pass the laser over the body part and the pain goes away and the healing starts. Almost sounds too good to be true.

18

Pain medications and anti-inflammatory drugs can have some very serious side effects on dogs, and long-term use of these medications is not ideal. Laser therapy is a safe, drug-free alternative to treat many common conditions, including arthritis. Older dogs can display pain in different ways and often compensate for the pain by favoring one side while walking. Pet owners will often note reluctance by their pet to climb stairs or hesitancy to jump in the car. These symptoms need to be addressed as soon as possible, as this behavior can lead to increasing problems. When started early, laser therapy treatments will start the healing process, reducing possible longterm problems, which may require the use of pain medications or even a major surgery like a

It is common for dogs to fall asleep during laser therapy. Some laser treatments will be done with the laser probe in contact with the skin. This will allow for excellent light penetration as well as a comforting or massage-like sensation for the dog. treatment. The eyes of the animal will be directed

The treatment times will vary based on the size of the dog and the condition being treated. Typical treatments will take five to ten minutes for an average-size dog. For a more superficial condition such as a post-surgical incision or a wound, the treatment times will be very short, one or two minutes. For a deeper condition like hip dysplasia or an arthritic condition, longer treatment times are needed. The weight and the body condition will also determine how long a treatment will take. Since the laser will need to penetrate more tissue on a larger dog, the laser will either need to be used for a longer treatment time. There is no need for sedation or clipping of the dog’s fur. The treatment is very soothing and most animals will relax once the treatment is started.

away from the treatment area or covered with a towel or eyewear. The clinician will move the probe over the area of treatment to assure the laser is being delivered to the area which needs improvement. It is common that multiple joints will be treated during one laser treatment session.

What Can You Expect After Your Dog Has Been Treated? You may notice your dog a little more comfortable after just one session with considerable differences being seen after about three treatments. Typically, laser therapy will be scheduled every other day for the initial treatments of more chronic conditions. Most conditions will need, on average, six total treatments to get a healing response.

For chronic conditions, eight to twelve treatments may be needed, with the possibility of ongoing maintenance treatments on a monthly basis. As discussed previously, the earlier treatment can be started, the better the outcome. Once conditions become chronic, results will take longer and acupuncture may be needed in conjunction with the laser therapy.

How Much Will It Cost? The costs of laser therapy sessions are based on the type of condition being treated. Longer treatments for an arthritic case will cost more and depend on the length of treatment time. Many practices will offer laser therapy packages which may include multiple sessions for one fee. If your dog is experiencing pain or discomfort, you should consult your therapist or veterinarian as soon as possible. Once your pet is diagnosed, laser therapy is a great treatment option due to the ease of treatment and the lack of side effects. The use of this proven technology can reduce or even eliminate the need for potentially harmful medications. Therapeutic laser treatments can help manage the joint pain that sets in as your dog gets older, keeping your companion moving, which is an important part of healthy aging.

Regional Queensland News Zones 2 & 3 By Cristina Fornasier Much has been happening in the northern part of the State and we are looking forward to another great year in 2019. The Innisfail Kennel Club in the far north of Queensland held their Rosette Spectacular in October, with great entries for their shows. The committee put together a huge array of rosette’s and prizes for each breed and winners of Groups and Show placings.

What an amazing achievement for all involved. BlackHawk came to the party with a huge food sponsorship which saw many receiving bags of food along with their other prizes. Certainly a show weekend not to be missed for next year. Maryborough Kennel Club hosted the Regional Amenities Four Championship shows on the 9th to the 11th November. The committee worked hard to bring the grounds back to a useable state after freak storms damaged trees and fencing in the area. We hope all enjoyed the fruits of their labour and the weekend’s events at the club grounds.

22

A selection of photo’s of winners taken at the Four Regional Amenities Shows are shown over the page. Thank you to those who supplied their details and pictures as I was unable to be there to do the official photo’s. Mackay Kennel Club held their last shows for the weekend of 3rd & 4th of November. Entries were down a little but that is normal at this time of year with the heat starting to ramp up. The weather wasn’t too bad however, with a lovely breeze blowing on Saturday with just some hot times experienced. The Show on Sunday was run through quickly to try and beat some of the heat and get people on the road home early. A lot of clubs throughout Regional Queensland don’t show over the main summer months giving exhibitors and their dogs a well-earned break without the pressure of having to attend a show, unless one travels further down the coast to Brisbane. Preparation is underway for two Championship Shows to be held at Sarina Kennel Club grounds in December with the first show starting no earlier then 5pm, and the 2nd show starting as soon as possible after the 1st. Entries should be made via our good friends at Show Manager, so if you are looking for a fun filled night to wrap up the year, head on into Sarina to the Kennel Club grounds which provide plenty of shade. These shows are being conducted by the Regional Amenities Committee and previously came about with plans laid by Craig Pettett, so we are happy to see them come to fulfilment.

The dedication of this club to ensure their grounds are seen as a Number One venue should be praised by all. If you would like to to send through northern Queensland news and upcoming special events for inclusion in Dog World magazine please contact Christine Fornasier at cristina_for@hotmail.com.
