President’s Message

Christmas and a Time of Renewal

I

t is hard to believe that we have reached December in one of the most challenging years I think that most of us have experienced. The continuing impact has affected some of us more than others and we do feel for those who are under financial strain and those who are experiencing health concerns. So many of us have friends and family overseas in countries seriously impacted by COVID-19. We are so lucky to live in Australia. Hopefully reliable vaccines will become available in the next number of months. I think that many of us are looking forward to more normalcy in 2021. It is terrific to see borders open and COVID-19 requirements being wound back, making it easier for us to enjoy a “new normal”. Certainly, on the show and dog sport front we are seeing more events being scheduled in all of our zones. And that is great. And a bouquet to those clubs, directors, staff and volunteers who are making this possible. So, a degree of renewal is happening in our dog world. And that extends to the renewal of Dogs Queensland memberships now due for 2021. And I think that is pause for thought. As I see it, membership of Dogs Queensland is a privilege, and it opens doors for participation in an array of dog disciplines and member benefits both in Queensland and interstate. Our Code of Ethics and Social Media Policy embed the requirement that members treat each other with respect and also act with integrity. I have no doubt that the vast majority of our members walk that talk and enjoy positive interaction with other members and the wider dog world community. However, there are Facebook pages or social media forums where members and former members consistently post negative and at times malicious and libellous statements about directors, Dogs Queensland staff and members. Sadly, some of these statements fall into the category of Hate Speech. This is completely unacceptable and out of step with the

ethos of our dog world. The Board has decided, in the main, not to respond to much of this negativity and just get on with the business of looking after Dogs Queensland, the members and our affiliated clubs. However, there is a limit. So, if you are inclined to participate in these, or join in and adopt these very unfortunate statements, perhaps being a member of Dogs Queensland is not for you. So do give this serious thought at this time of membership renewal. Negativity breeds negativity and is a real disincentive to our attracting positive people to our wonderful dog world.

Consultation with Clubs in Zones 2 and 3 On 9 November 2020, the Executive and the Zone 2 and 3 Directors, Mrs Marg Norton and Mrs Sharron Taylor, and Mr Rob Harrison, had consecutive Zoom meetings with representatives of All Breeds Clubs in Zone 2 and Zone 3. It was an opportunity to discuss the challenges facing clubs in running shows in these COVID-19 times and an opportunity to discuss ways Dogs Queensland could assist these clubs into 2021. Matters discussed included the simplification, and where possible, the reduction, of charges and requirements imposed on clubs. There is potential for some “COVID-19 relaxations” for 2021 that could include: • Including the cost of ribbons in the required 20% expenditure on prizes; • Not charging for schedules published in the online digital Dog World magazine; • Moving from a percentage R10 charge to a flat rate per dog entry charge. There was a good discussion about the fixed expenses many of our regional clubs face in the use of their grounds. The biggest expenses most clubs face are for power, water and lights. And of course,

DOG WORLD December 2020

5

the overlay of COVID-19 requirements is an issue with clubs, particularly on the people resourcing front. The recent relaxation of some of these requirements will be welcome at forthcoming events. This was followed by a Zoom meeting held on 16 November 2020 with representatives of our Dog Sports Clubs in Zone 2 and Zone 3. Similarly, the Executive, the Zone 2 and 3 Directors, other directors and Mr Rob Harrison participated in the meeting. There was a good sharing of information and concerns with interesting suggestions made. Similar themes arose with both groups. In both meetings thanks were extended to the office and to Mrs Sharron Taylor and Mrs Barb Murfet for the assistance provided in developing workable COVID plans. This is a process that is continuously evolving with much work being undertaken behind the scenes to make the running of our shows and events possible. It was unanimously agreed that these Zoom conferences are very beneficial and that they will be held at least quarterly or sooner on a needs basis.

Pandemic Puppies Our media consultant, Mr David Margan, has been successful in lining up some interview opportunities with ABC Radio and Channel 7 over the last week or so. It has been a good opportunity to get information out to the community about the importance of dealing with reputable breeders and the benefits of buying a puppy from an ANKC/Dogs Queensland breeder who is subject to our Breeder’s Code of Conduct and Member’s Code of Ethics. This is a great opportunity to raise the profile of our dog bodies. Demand for puppies continues to be high in the community and this has provided a fertile field for scams and excessive charging for puppies. It is great that our breeder members have risen to the challenge of supplying this market with quality puppies. We have had record litter registrations for the months of September, October and November. We have some very experienced dog breeders in our dog world so if newer dog breeders are seeking advice on any aspect of best practice dog breeding please contact Rob in the office in the first instance for one of these advisory contacts.

Wishing you and your families a very happy Christmas and all the best in 2021. Warm regards

Ulla Greenwood, President

Australian National Kennel Council Ltd PRESS RELEASE – TURKISH SHEPHERD DOG SURVEY RESULTS A survey was conducted by ANKC Ltd earlier this year to ascertain the feedback from any Member of a Canine Control affiliated with the ANKC Ltd and who was the owner of a registered Anatolian Shepherd Dog or Kangal Shepherd Dog to the following questions: 1) Do you agree to the renaming from Anatolian Shepherd Dog to Kangal Shepherd Dog? 2) Do you agree to the FCI Standard for FCI CACIB shows? 3) Do you agree to an Australian Kangal Shepherd Dog Standard for non-CACIB shows? The response received indicated support. As this was an amendment to current regulations, the result of the survey was referred to the ANKC Board of Directors for consideration at their October 2020 Special Board meeting where it was resolved that the status quo remain where there will be two breeds with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog using the current Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed standard and the Kangal Shepherd Dog using the FCI Kangal Shepherd Dog breed standard and that owners may transfer the affected dogs from one breed to the other up until the 30 June 2021. The ANKC urges those owners who want to take advantage of the transfer moratorium to ensure that they are satisfied that the dogs they are moving to the Kangal Shepherd Dog Register comply with the requirements of the Kangal Shepherd Dog Standard. As a consequence, the following new clause will be added to Regulations Part 6 – The Register & Registration: 6.2.4.9 Anatolian Shepherd Dog/Kangal Shepherd Dog The status quo will remain where there will be two breeds with the Anatolian Shepherd Dog using the current Anatolian Shepherd Dog breed standard and the Kangal Shepherd Dog using the FCI Kangal Shepherd Dog breed standard. Owners may transfer the affected dogs from one breed to the other up until the 30 June 2021. (Added 10/20, 5.5)

NEW DIRECTOR APPOINTMENT Members would know that a selection process was recently undertaken by the Board to fill a director casual vacancy that was caused by the recent resignation of Mr Jeremy Cook. Expressions of interest were called for and the Board had a special meeting on Monday 16 November 2020 to consider the 8 applications. It was a strong field of applicants. I thank all these applicants for taking the time to apply for this voluntary director position. Each application was carefully considered by the Board with 4 applicants shortlisted and a vote taken. Ms Patrice Johansen was the successful applicant and I take this opportunity to congratulate her on her appointment.

Patrice’s contribution to the dog world has seen her hold positions of Secretary for the Ipswich Kennel Club (since 2006), and a committee member of the Dog of the Year Committee (also since 2006).

Jeremy’s 4-year appointment in 2019 was until 2023 so Patrice’s appointment is until the next relevant election for that director position and that will be 2023. Also, there is a degree of confidentiality about this appointment process so the list of the names of applicants will not be released by Dogs Queensland. I expect each of these members will be deciding whether to nominate as a director under the current election process for the 6 director positions.

Patrice has held executive positions as President of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Council Australia, President of the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Queensland, Secretary of the Hound Club of Queensland, and has been a committee member of the Strategic Planning Committee Dogs Queensland. She has been instrumental in forming the new Yuggera Canine Club (2020) and currently holds the position of Secretary. This club was the previous Combined CCC Club that has been renamed and revitalised.

Patrice is a member of the Conformation Judges Committee for Dogs Queensland, and a coordinator and lecturer for the judges training scheme and an accredited assessor for the program.

Patrice will bring a wealth of dog world and professional experience and knowledge to her role as a Dogs Queensland director. Patrice is extremely well known in dog conformation circles but for those not familiar with Patrice and her substantive dog world and professional background I will provide this summary-: •

Patrice has been a member of Dogs QLD since 1978, she gained her single breed license for Rhodesian Ridgebacks in 1991 and after joining the Judges training scheme in 2004, she gained her All Breeds Judge’s License in 2013. One of her many judging highlights was judging at the Rhodesian Ridgeback World Congress Show, along with presenting a paper on judging to the breed standard at the World Congress. Patrice has judged extensively in Australia and Internationally.

10

DOG WORLD December 2020

• Professionally, Patrice is currently the Program Coordinator for Youth Justice (DDSW Region) and she manages a team of 12 Youth Workers implementing programs for young people on Statutory Orders. She develops programs with cross collaborative working partnerships and builds the capacity of her team and delivery of programs to young people on orders with a strengths-based approach, restorative practice, cultural capability and exceptional service delivery.

Patrice previously worked for Education Queensland coordinating the development and implementation of activities and programs to engage educationally disengaged young people and provide a sustainable pathway for transitions. Delivery of key stakeholder relationship management, community engagement and development, and the provision of exceptional service delivery were key objectives.

Throughout her career Patrice developed and delivered programs to facilitate ongoing training and up-skilling for long term unemployed and early school leavers to enable them to build a pathway to sustainable employment or education. She has worked in the training environment for many years including as the Engineering Training Coordinator for Boeing Defence Australia at Amberley RAAF Base. Patrice has particular experience in management and leadership where she has managed teams of up to 30 staff, project delivery, development and facilitation of training, stakeholder and community engagement, operational procedures and service delivery.

As a director, Patrice will bring to the Board extensive experience from both her professional and personal life. With an extensive career in program development, training, and human services she will deliver value through her service delivery expertise and operational understanding. She has a strong understanding of the principles and practices of the disciplines to support strategic direction and an ability to see the bigger picture and how to build a framework to deliver positive outcomes.

In addition, Patrice has an intrinsic understanding of the importance of stakeholder relationship management, community engagement, coordination and delivery, and accuracy in accomplishing key outcomes of service delivery.

SCOTTISH TERRIER

They’re proud, dignified, stubborn, wary of strangers and unshakeably loyal to their friends. Owners who decide to raise a Scottish Terrier will have their work cut out for them – but it will be worth the effort. 12

DOG WORLD December 2020

The well-known Scottie silhouette is that of a short-legged but substantial terrier with distinctive furnishings at the beard, legs and lower body. Height at withers for either sex should be about 25.4 to 28 cms and weight between 8.6 to 10.4.kgs. The wiry topcoat and soft, dense undercoat coat can be black, wheaten yellow or a brindle-stripe pattern. Bright, piercing eyes with a varminty expression, and erect ears and tail, convey keen alertness – a hallmark of Britain’s terrier breeds. The Scottish Terrier has been a recognisable breed since the late 1800’s, thriving in the rough and rugged terrain of the Scottish Highlands. Given his origins, he is known as a tough, generally healthy dog, protected from the elements by a thick double coat and from illness by an overall strong, disease-resistant constitution.

Image: Images By Renee

Conscientious breeders work diligently to identify healthy breeding stock when producing their litters so please discuss this with prospective breeders to ensure disease/health testing has been done. When vaccinated during puppyhood and at appropriate times during his lifetime to protect him from preventable diseases, and given the benefits of modern-day veterinary care, a Scottie usually thrives for many years. On average the Scottie lives about 12 years and it’s not uncommon to encounter healthy seniors who reach 14 years or more. If you’ve ever seen Lady and the Tramp, you’ll know what you’re in for with the Scottish Terrier. They’re proud, dignified, stubborn, wary of strangers and unshakeably loyal to their friends. Owners who decide to raise a Scottish Terrier will have their work cut out for them – but it will be worth the effort. A solidly compact dog of vivid personality, the Scottish Terrier is an independent, confident companion of high spirits. Scotties have a dignified, almost-human character. Their terrier persistence has earned the breed the nickname “the Diehard.” They are extremely loyal and attached to their people – Scotties will want to do things on their terms. They are unlike most dogs because of this singular trait. They tend to think they are large dogs and have the boldness

and courage to match, bred to hunt feisty badgers – not much intimidates these dogs. To outsiders Scotties appear somewhat morose and serious but to their family and friends they are affectionate and cheerful. They love children however children must be taught that these dogs are not toys and to give them the respect they deserve. They will get along well with other household animals with appropriate training.

Anyone who has owned a Scottie will say they have a bond they have not had with any other breed of dog. Scotties fit easily into their new homes and quickly become a family member however to achieve that deeper bond their love is earned – not freely given and this often takes time.

Scotties must be in fenced yards. They require a fence that cannot be jumped over, dug under or scaled with a locked gate as they have a very strong hunting instinct and will go after anything they consider prey (including a dog much larger than they). Electric fences will not work as they are pain tolerant and will easily accept the shock

and not be deterred from pursuing their prey. Yards must be secure, flowerbeds protected, gates and doors kept locked at all times. This is not a dog that is scared to explore. In the dog park Scotties are not a happy-golucky, get-along with anybody dog. They will not back down from an aggressive dog. A Scottie should always be on a leash outside of your yard. Scotties are on their best behaviour when the option to interact with their humans is present. If left alone for long periods, they will seek ways to while away the time, sometimes in manners you may not approve of. Despite their size, they don’t yap: they have a powerful bark that can scare the wits out of the unsuspecting burglar or delivery person and are protective of their turf and usually bark if they sense anyone or anything is a threat. This may also include postmen as well as passing dogs and cats. They totally rock at agility and earthdog trials. You’ll enjoy a rodent-free yard with one of these

dogs around but watch out for the holes they’ve dug. They are a breed that absolutely love water but drown very easily – many a Scottie has drowned even in shallow water. That however does not rule out a water game with the sprinkler or sprint at the beach through the water with all that sand to dig in. Scotties are a low shedding breed meaning they moult very little hair, however as with all long haired/low moulting breeds they require regular brushing and grooming. This must begin at a very early age and be stepped up during the changeover to adult coat. Scottish Terriers need to be professionally groomed four to five times a year. Scotties tend to take a different approach to training then other dogs. Many describe them as being stubborn and difficult to train – it’s all in your approach to training. Training needs to based on mutual respect as they are a breed that think very much like a human. Ask your family member to come over, sit and stay. The first time they will likely do it and then

DOG WORLD December 2020

ask you what do you want (or may ask this first before even coming). Let them walk off then call them again and see if they come! A Scottie thinks just like this – they will query the viability of what you are asking them to do and whether or not they want to do it. If you work on strengthening the bond with your Scottie, their loyalty will make them excellent students. Not only will they learn quickly but they have high intelligence and can compete in many disciplines. Despite what you might think about the Scottie’s stubbornness, behind that impressive beard is a big heart. They want to do right by their owners and will become withdrawn with harsh reprimands. A Scottie never forgets! Positive reinforcement training techniques are best for a Scottie and never make anything so repetitive it becomes boring. When it comes to their energy levels they are moderately energetic. They’ll easily keep up with your family’s activities but they won’t be disappointed if you’re not out running every day. Somewhere between a brisk 30-minute walk and

a few hours of playtime is plenty. Scotties really do not slow down until they approach the age of 10 years and do expect daily outdoor interaction, play or exercise. You will find quality Scottie breeders are a picky and devoted bunch and be prepared to wait sometime for a puppy. Many will require an extensive application and visits to the breeder are highly recommended. Their goal is that you and their puppy are happy.

DOG TALES

KILTIE’S STORY – Ann Shannon In 1963 I became involved in a sport that was to change the rest of my life. I was 14 years old and working with my sister at the “Poodles Rendezvous” grooming parlour in Belfast, Northern Ireland as a Saturday part-timer washing dogs and sweeping up hair. It was popular at that time to dye Poodles for weddings to match the bridesmaid’s dresses and the girls there also taught me to groom all breeds which I ended up doing for many years. The owner bred Scottish Terriers and was given a West Highland White Terrier 10 week old puppy by another breeder but because he was a different colour than his other dogs, his four year old son decided to flush him down the toilet – he brought him to work the next Saturday. Enter into my life “Whitebriar Jaffa” – or “Kiltie” as I called him. I worked for endless Saturdays free of charge in order to pay for him but I thought it was well worth it. My family always had pet dogs so it was no surprise to my Mummy that I came home from work with him in my coat. One of the girls I worked with said that she had been taking her Corgi to a scout hall at the other side of Belfast to learn obedience and it sounded interesting so one night armed with my puppy, bus fare and good luck from my family, I boarded a red bus and travelled into the middle of Belfast – and yes dogs were welcomed on buses in those days! Another bus to the hall and it was full of dogs and handlers all at different levels of training. I watched in amazement as the top dogs went through their exercises and knew I was hooked for all the years that were to come!! One of the instructors that night was Ken Wheelhouse and I met him quite a few years ago

18

DOG WORLD December 2020

again in Nth Ireland ! I went each week with Kiltie and taught him the English style of Obedience which included distance control (which I practiced at home in our long hallway) – Retrieving (one of Daddy’s socks which he must have wondered where it disappeared to) – and close Heelwork. I mated him to a lovely little female on our road and they gave me a puppy in return – I called him “Piper” but did not keep him long as he tried to destroy the house and Mummy was not pleased! I also showed Kiltie with the help of the owner of the shop, but looking back on it and knowing what I know now he was far too big and had a soft coat – despite clouds of chalk being rubbed into his hair. He therefore never got anywhere in the show ring. I enjoyed Kiltie’s Obedience training immensely but a few years later my Mummy decided that I would be better off in Australia as my sister and brother had immigrated a few years before and were doing well, so she sent in my paperwork and told me to get ready to go to Australia. Kiltie stayed with them for the rest of his days and I was catapulted into a forever dog world here in Australia.

SCHEDULES FOR UP TO AND INCLUDING APRIL 2021

All Schedules up to and including April 2021 Shows and Trials should be submitted as soon as possible to the Dogs Queensland office. Please ensure all information is completed including Handlers, Sweepstakes, Nominated Classes etc Submissions by Show Manager preferred or email ian@dogsqueensland.org.au

GETTING OUT THE VOTE BE PART OF IT – NOMINATE AND VOTE Nominations for a role on our Board opened on Friday 13 November 2020 and close at 5pm AEST on Friday 11 December 2020. Nomination forms can now be downloaded from the Dogs Queensland website (click here). Postal voting commences on Wednesday 20 January 2021, and closes at 5:00pm AEST on Friday 19 February 2021. Voting is so important to the quality of your organisation! Plan to vote and encourage every member you know to do the same. This is YOUR organisation, it’s of YOU and for YOU. It is YOUR money that is being spent – running an election costs thousands of dollars, so why not use it? Of 6,297 members listed as eligible to vote in our last board election in February 2019 only 1349 did – that’s just 21.42% of our membership.

DOG WORLD December 2020

We have an enormous pool of talent and knowledge in our membership so why not step up and nominate? YOU can and will make a difference for the better by getting involved, nominating and getting out the vote. Like many similar organisations we face a number of issues and we’re not just talking about the pandemic. Our membership is ageing and falling, so we need to grow our brand and reputation. There is so much more we can achieve.

Christmas Dog Poison Dangers With Christmas rapidly approaching and us humans indulging in a little festive frivolity, it can be a dangerous time for dogs, with tempting but potentially poisonous treats adorning every surface. Curious pets, particularly dogs, may explore and eat gifts left under the tree, food in the kitchen or chew on plants decorating the house. Make sure you avoid these common dangers to keep your dogs safe this festive season;

· Mince Pies and Christmas Puddings – All grapes,

raisins, currants and sultanas are toxic to dogs; as are foods that contain them. Ingestion can cause severe kidney damage.

· Chocolate – Contains methylxanthines which are

toxic to dogs. Darker chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate. White chocolate has negligible levels of methylxanthines, while dark baking chocolate contains the highest amounts.

· Fatty foods – Dogs find most fatty foods highly

tempting. These include pork crackling, sausages, processed meats and even drippings from barbeques. Fatty foods can cause significant gastrointestinal upset in dogs and possibly result in a condition known as pancreatitis. Dogs that ingest large quantities of salty foods may also be at risk of salt poisoning.

· Macadamia nuts – Often found in biscuits or eaten as a decadent Christmas snack, these nuts are toxic to dogs and cause hind limb lameness, pain and weakness.

· Xylitol – Many sugarless gums and lollies contain

xylitol, a sweetener which is toxic to dogs. It causes a life-threatening drop in blood sugar and liver failure.

– Animal Poisons Helpline

· Batteries – Button batteries are easily caught in

the oesophagus, and when stuck can start to cause damage very quickly. When swallowed, the electrical current in a button battery reacts with moisture to produce a strong alkali chemical. This chemical can cause serious internal burns and bleeding. The batteries can also leak chemicals which can cause serious burns.

· Human medications – Some human medications

can be very toxic to dogs, even in small quantities. They are often stored in handbags and benchtops that may be accessible to dogs. With visiting family and friends, the Christmas holidays may be a particularly risky time for these types of exposures. Ensure any visitors store their medication appropriately.

· Alcohol – Dogs may help themselves to any alcohol

left unattended including wine and liqueurs and it can cause similar signs in them as it does in their owners when drunk in excess. Dogs can become wobbly and drowsy and in severe cases there is a risk of low body temperature, low blood sugar and coma. If you think your pet has been exposed to any of these products, call 1300 TOX PET (1300 869 738) for a tailored risk assessment and recommendation, including first aid measures. The Animal Poisons Helpline is a registered charity that provides a free service for all pet owners. Visit www.animalpoisons. com.au for more information.

Dog Sports – Scent Work Trials ANKC CANINE SCENT WORK HAS ARRIVED The Dogs Queensland Scent Work Subcommittee, chaired by Kim Dawson, has been busy promoting the sport since the introduction in July 2020. They have conducted two Introduction Sessions at Durack giving our members a taste of the new sport and whetting their appetites. Recently the team journeyed to Rockhampton for a session which was received with great enthusiasm. The handler is part of the team, using body language and verbal encouragement to ensure all sections of the search area are covered, directing the dog’s search only when necessary and indicating to the Judge when the dog has found the odour. Communication with and praise of the dog during the search are encouraged. For more information about this new ANKC Sport go to the Dogs Queensland website (https://www. dogsqueensland.org.au/events/scent-work/) or contact Rob Harrison (rob@dogsqueensland.org.au). WHAT IS CANINE SCENT WORK?

Scent Work is a sport that is based on the task of working detection dogs to locate an odour and communicate to the handler that the odour has been found. Detection is done in a variety of environments and often during changing weather or environmental conditions. Scent Work is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest natural sense in a way that is fun, engaging, and builds and strengthens a foundation of trust between the handler and dog. Dogs are trained to recognise specific odours, and to alert their handlers when the odours are detected. Dogs may paw, bark, point with their nose or body, sit, lie down, or use any other nondestructive behaviour to communicate the location of the odour. Handlers take their dogs through a search area which may be set up in a variety of environments. The dog and handler must work together as a

AUSTRALIAN VENOMOUS SPIDER BITES

In Our Canine Companions

– Dr Asher Dessaix When pets are presented to vets with sudden, unexplained illnesses, a common question that is asked, is whether it could be a spider bite. Given Australia has some of the most venomous in the world, this seems a plausible question to ask. The act of being bitten by a spider is rarely witnessed so a presentation for such an event is usually based on assumptions. Are these concerns valid? What are the risks of spider bites to you pets? The most clinically notable species in Australia are the Funnel-web spider, Redback spider, Australian Tarantula and a notable mention should include the White-tail spider. Funnel-webs are distributed on the East coast of Australia and whilst they are traditionally considered to be confined to NSW they in fact have been found in South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and in QLD. They produce a potent neurotoxin toxin which can kill a healthy adult in as little as 15 minutes. Interestingly, the Funnel-web venom seems to specifically target invertebrates and primates. Dogs and cats will typically survive a Funnel-web bite, being able to neutralise the toxin quite rapidly. Redback spiders have a much wider distribution throughout the country. The major toxicity in animals is caused by ι-latrotoxin. This causes exhaustive release of nerve transmitter chemicals from nerve endings. In dogs the reported effects include vomiting, diarrhoea, agitation, pain, tremors and severe muscular contractions which can involve the abdomen and thorax such that it impairs breathing. Dogs are less susceptible to redback spiders compared to many other species. It is rarely fatal in dogs unless they suffer numerous bites or they are particularly small. Antivenom is available for humans but treatment is generally supportive until the effect of the venom wears off.

keep them as pets. Dogs are particularly susceptible and can die from a bite in 30-120 minutes. Clinical signs may include muscle spasms, swelling, red discolouration of urine, jaundice and circulatory shock. The effects on humans are generally short lived and no antivenom is available. Only supportive treatment can be provided, and prognosis unfortunately has been reported to be very poor for canine victims. White-tail spider bites perhaps deserve a special mention. They are commonly considered a likely culprit when a pet is found to have a severe necortising wound where no other explanations can be found. This is a condition known as necrotic arachnism. The poor white-tailed spider may actually be the victim of false accusation. Australian experts have recently concluded that white-tail spider bites will cause either pain only, pain with a red mark which lasts less than 24 hours or pain and an irritating lesion that may last 5-12 days. Of course, I have only mentioned the most notable species in this article. There are many spiders which may bite your pet through misadventure. Most will likely produce pain and swelling in a similar manner to a bee sting or ant bite. The good news is that our dogs are less susceptible to our most notorious venomous species than we are. With regards to the Australian Tarantula, given the limited treatment options for dogs, the best defence is going to be vigilance. The female of this species tends to live in burrows and the male live under rocks and logs. Any measures you can take to prevent you dog provoking these spiders in these habitats are likely your only options.

Australian Tarantulas (Whistling spiders) are the most serious of this group of spiders. They are widely distributed throughout Australia and are quite common in North Queensland. Some people even

spider bite poisoning Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®

SE Qld’s spiders to look out for:

• Red Back • White tailed spider • Toowoomba Funnel-Web • Toowoomba Trapdoor spider • Orb spiders • Giant Grey Huntsman • Tube Trapdoor • Eastern Mouse spider • 2 x False Funnel-web spiders To name but a few!

Spiders will generally run off after they bite their prey, so you won’t necessarily know if the spider that bit your dog was a dangerous one. My point is to not get too caught up on which spider bit your dog but to arm yourself as dog owners on how best to manage the adverse reactions from a bite. If you are aware of the spiders in your area or you saw the spider make sure you advise your Vet.

poisoning Many spiders are just too small to dig their fangs into the skin of a dog, let alone cause envenomation, and that is a huge relief if you ask me. However, for those spiders who do have the capacity here is what can happen:

In SE Qld there is a recorded 53 spider species and what is alarming to me is that I calculated 21 of them with a venom toxicity level of ‘uncertain’ and 6 where the toxicity level is ‘unknown’1.

• A spider’s fangs penetrate the skin; injects venom

The information regarding the above spiders with their combined total of 424 legs!! is a bit short on their impact to dogs, however if there are 27 species where no one knows their toxicity level and 10 with a known level of toxicity, one might surmise that one of these little arachnids could upset the lives of our dogs.

Orb spider, has the potential to cause Necrotising Arachnidism; where the spider bite causes the death of cells in an organ or tissue.

“If the Veterinarian community informs us there is a list of signs and symptoms that could arise after a spider bite, then this says to me that a risk exists and that my dog could become gravely ill if bitten by the wrong spider”.

from glands, filled with neurotoxin, into the blood stream, impacting brain and heart function.

• Some spiders, like the White tail and the

• Other spiders may cause localised swelling, ulceration, joint pain or mild illness, and

• Of course, one dog may experience a reaction where another dog may not.

Either way consider all spider bites as serious; call your Vet to discuss your dog’s signs and symptoms.

safety precautions

Learn about the spiders in your local area and study up the best way to respond, remove or eradicate Keep backyard clear of: equipment, stacked wood, piled leaves and keep grass mowed

Maintain a pest control management plan for your home

Don’t ignore signs such as crying in the moment or continuous licking, blood on fur or limping

Keep your dog on a leash when walking in parks and bush lands

Inspect your backyard whenever you move your dog outside to play especially after rains

If you can prove identification of the spider for your Vet, take a photo but only if safe to do so

The Toowoomba Funnel-web comes out especially after rains so if you are a bush walker in the range or Lockyer Valley keep your eye out

When living near a construction zone in bushlands be especially vigilant for disrupted habitats

signs & symptoms Have a look at the following signs and symptoms. A sign will be, for example, bite wound and the symptom would be for example, difficulty breathing. This list will assist you in diagnosing the dog’s condition as being bitten by a spider. The most common areas where a dog is bitten are head, face, paws and legs. Bear in mind though that a dog may endure multiple bites, so treat any and all puncture sites regardless of location.

• Localised pain or joint pain • Dog experiencing anxiety • Swelling around bite area • Lesion or skin turning black at bite site • Dog shivering / shaking or sweating • Limping or paw lifted when walking • Unable to get up and stand • Reduced appetite • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhoea • Fatigue • Trouble breathing • Paralysis Consider all spider bites serious if you are unsure

whether it is of the venomous variety or not.

action 1. Undertake Primary Assessment DRSABC a.

Check for Dangers – a danger may be that your at risk of being bitten you’re your frightened dog; the spider is still around your dog. Do not try to catch or kill the spider if not confident or experienced

b. Is your dog responding to your voice or your touch? If not, your dog may be unconscious c.

Send for help; if there is someone else in the house get them to do things like get the first aid kit, prepare the car, call the Vet. They may help you lift your dog

d. Check the airway for blockages or foreign objects; remove if there is e. Check the breathing (respirations) e.g. count the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing

f. Check circulation (pulse) – start CPR if no pulse

2. Keep your dog calm and move into a quiet small room, restricting pet’s movement and assess injury/ wound 3. Put a covered ice pack on bite area to help with the swelling 4. Wrap dog in blanket and place in their bed or in a crate for transport 5. Transport smaller dogs in crate or box 6. If you have a driver, sit in the back with the dog stroking and speaking in a soothing manner on way to vet 7. Get to vet If you have a driver:

• If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration

• If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR on the way to the vet surgery

FAMILIARISE YOURSELF with the spiders that are found in your area and where they live Reference: •
