The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World

President’s Message for February 2018 As members would be aware, our CEO Mr Brian Menke, has now been working with Dogs Queensland for nearly a month. Brian has already instigated a number of changes which will assist and benefit the members of our organisation. Some of the main changes which are in line with the renewed focus on service include: • • •

Changes to operating hours of the office. New hours are now Monday to Friday 8:00am to 5:30pm, and the office will now be open every Saturday from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Carpark at the front of the office has been changed so the first 7 spaces at the entrance to the office are now dedicated for members and visitors only. The establishment of a small retail area in the office reception area, which includes a mix of food products, supplements, toys and other accessories.

There are set to be other changes over the coming weeks and months, as Brian continues to work through certain areas of the organisation. Members will continue to kept up to date of all changes as they occur. I would like to thank members for their patience during the last few weeks. War and Service Dog Memorial The joint event with the RSL Forest Lake that was conducted at Durack on Sunday the 4th of February for the ‘War and Service Dog Memorial’ built on the grounds was a great success. Olympic legend Dawn Fraser was among the many distingished officals present at the dedication of the new memorial with refreshments being held in the function room after the service. A number of members attended this event as well, providing their support to this worthwhile cause, which was greatly appreciated. I would like to personally thank all volunteers who made this very successful event possible. Life membership applications Members are reminded that 2018 applications for life membership must be received by the 5th of March 2018. Life membership is a special recognition of people of the role model calibre that sets a good example for other members and goes well beyond the contribution made by many of our people in the dog world. If you or your Club have someone that fits this description, and you feel they are worthy of the accolade of life membership, please submit your applications to the office. The Board can only consider people for life membership in a given year if an application has been sent in.

2018 is the Chinese Year of the Dog! and we should celebrate! he Chinese Calendar has a 12-year cycle and in 2018 it is the Chinese Year of the Dog. However, there is something special about 2018, it is the Chinese Year of the EARTH Dog. The Chinese year of the Dog has 5 symbols, Water, Metal, Earth, Fire and Wood. This means that in every 12-year cycle of the Chinese Calendar, the Chinese Year of the Dog happens only once, and to make matters even more complicated because of the 5 symbols in the year of the Dog, the Earth Dog year only occurs every 60 years. The last one was in 1958! Chinese New Year commences on 16th February, just in time for us to start the celebrations for all things ‘dog-centric’ and especially recognise the special year dedicated to Earth Dogs. What are Earth dogs? Many Terriers and Dachshunds were bred originally to hunt, chase, go to ground and bolt quarry of one kind or another, usually fox, otter and badger. Today, the sport of Earth Dog allows these dogs to use their natural instincts in a safe, simulated hunting environment. Loads of fun and can earn Titles as well. Which breeds can compete? • All Dachshunds • Australian Terriers • Australian Silky Terriers • Bedlington Terriers • Border Terriers • Cairn Terriers • Dandi Dinmont Terriers • Glen of Imaal Terriers • German Hunt Terriers • Fox Terriers (Smooth and Wirehaired) • Jack Russell Terrier • Manchester Terriers • Norfolk Terriers

The Siberian Husky Pet Facts This Versatile And Sociable Dog Finds Chasing Small Animals Irrestible. Origin: Siberia Developed by the nomadic Chukchi, Inuit peoples of eastern Siberia as a fast, long distance sled dog. More slightly built than other sled dogs, the Siberian Husky is tough, strong, full of endurance and the fastest of all sled dogs. Height Range: 51 - 60cm Weight Range: 16 - 27kg Life Span: Over 10 years

Did you know? In 1925 Nome, Alaska was stricken with a horrific diphtheria outbreak. Not enough antitoxin was available to treat all the sick, until teams of mushers and sled dogs battled a blinding blizzard and travelled 674 miles to deliver medicine. Balto, a husky, was one of the heroic lead dogs. A memorial dedicated to Balti and the teams of Siberian Huskies now stands in Central Park, New York.

Sheds twice a year and need daily brushing

Characteristics and Temperament Siberian Huskies are loving, gently playful dogs who are fond of their families. The breed makes peaceable and lovable companions. The breed also needs vigorous exercise to burn off some of their energy, however they should not be excessively exercised in warm weather. Indifferent to the coldest climates, Siberian Huskies are still popular in the arctic, particularly in sports such as dogsled-racing. They have a strong pack instinct, and are unlikely to be happy living in isolation. Siberian Huskies are not watchdogs, they howl rather than bark and love everyone. High fences are required as they love to jump or dig their way out and go off hunting or playing. Acknowledgements: • • •

Where it all began laska and Siberia, separated by 88 kilometers of Bering Sea, have through the ages shared

their ancestry, a way of living and their life preserving dogs. Some 35,000 years ago the people of Central Asia migrated farther north to the extreme-most regions of Siberia and the Arctic, they brought with them their jackal-type dogs (Canis aureus). Cross bred with the Arctic wolves (Canis lupus), these animals developed over the centuries into what later came to be referred to as the Northern breeds, including the Malamute, Samoyed, the Spitz, Keeshonds, Elkhounds, the Nootka dogs of Iceland and the Russian Laikas. By the Neolithic age, 3500-2000 BC, the Northern dogs had become established with their own type and characteristics which, with periodic breedings to the Wolf, managed to endure down through the ages. These dogs were referred to as “huskies”. The term husky is a corruption of “esky” a slang word for Eskimo; it covered all the sled pulling breeds that had rough, shaggy coats pointed faces and plumey tails. Their coats were thick and woolly to protect them from the elements, and they came in almost every colour; solids, brindles, white with spots, black with white, white with black patches, reds, yellow, yellow spotted, red spotted, etc. From the first days of the Eskimos’ existence on earth the dogs had been there by their sides, living with them and hunting with them, thousands of years before sleds were thought necessary for their existence. As far back as Mesolithic times man travelled on skis, and there is evidence that they used the native American drag sled (travois) for ages before they got around to building sleds. ¹

www.dogsqueensland.org.au

As the Eskimos continued their northward migration across the Arctic Circle, eventually coming then to Greenland, some of the natives moved in behind them and established tribes along the foothills of the Cherski Mountains at the basin of the Kolyma River. One of these tribes was the Chukchi people who were to develop the Siberian Husky. The early association of dog and tribe led to the dog’s being sometimes referred to as Siberian Chukchi. These tribes consisted of three “divisions”: the marine or maritime people who were largely fishermen and lived along the river where the Huskies were used to pull the umiaks (large skin boats) along the shore: the sedentary people who remained in one place and traded to make a living; the nomadic tribes, which wandered far and wide following the huge herds of reindeer. Travelling by reindeer became less and less satisfactory to the nomads, who became more and more dependant on their dogs not only to help them hunt and herd but also to get them from village to village to trade.

11

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World As the wilderness opened before them, and as their numbers grew, they began to develop a dog bred to meet the requirements of their specific needs. The Siberian Husky was born. The Husky became the dog with the necessary conformation to provide both speed and endurance over great distances with the least expenditure of energy. While many of the tribes were hostile toward one another, there were times when the tribes depended on each other and their dog teams for their very survival. When food was scarce, they would join their dogs to one sled when it became necessary to move entire villages and belongings from one place to another. At times the women and children would get in harness and pull with the dogs to facilitate the move. Their dogs were held in such high esteem that only the babies and the sick or elderly were allowed to ride.

The Husky became the dog with the necessary conformation to provide both speed and endurance over great distances with the least expenditure of energy. Drivers led or walked behind the teams guiding their worldly goods to a new less hostile location. In heavy snow or bad weather, the drivers would often blaze the trail with their snow shoes ahead of the lead dog, and the teams would follow in his footsteps along the man-made trail. These Northern dogs were seldom fast runners as it was more important that they maintain the pull from one village to another at a moderate speed to assure their arriving with their cargo intact. Today as well the Siberian Husky is at his best when he can cover great distances with a comparatively light load at a moderate speed. Under these conditions he has no peer. Weight for weight, the Siberian Husky is the strongest draft dog of them all! ยน Reference: www.brownsbigbabies.com

Member Insight The Queensland Dog World

The s i t a e H on ! It’s February, it's hot and not difficult to imagine this… t’s a hot and steamy summer day and you have just returned from a brisk walk in the bush or along the shore. You are hot, sweating and out of breath and ready for an ice-cold drink. Your canine buddy enjoyed the walk with you but is now panting heavily, but he does not seem to be sweating! Dogs do however sweat, but differently to humans. Dogs have two types of sweat glands: Merocrine glands – which function similar to human sweat glands and are located in the paw pads and activate when your dog is very hot. Apocrine sweat glands - their main purpose is to release pheromones which do not cool your dog off, but they are located all over the dog’s body and help identify other dogs by scent, similar to body odour.

14

Which dogs are more susceptible to heat stress? • • •

Dogs that are elderly, obese or have a history of heart disease or seizures. Dogs with shorter snouts (Pugs, Pekinese, Bulldogs) have a harder time panting out their body heat. Certain breeds do not tolerate heat as well as others such as English and French Bulldogs, Boxers, Saint Bernard’s and Shih Tzu’s (Australian Dog Lover, 2015).

Why do dogs pant? Dogs rely on panting to evaporate moisture from their tongues and the lining of their lungs. Dogs also rely on ‘vasodilation’ (expansion of blood vessels) in their ears and face which helps them cool off. When blood vessels expand, blood is brought closer to the surface, which cools down and regulates the internal body temperature.

Member Insight The Queensland Dog World

To clip or not to clip? That is the question! A dog’s coat acts as an insulator, which keeps the dog either cool or warm. This insulating layer can make it difficult for dogs to lower their body temperature in continuous or excessively hot weather. The insulation acts like a layer in a thermos and can retain the heat in continuously hot weather, taking longer to cool down. Dogs with thicker coats are better insulated than dogs with thinner coats, which means that short haired, single coated dogs are more heat tolerant. Clipping sounds like a logical solution to keeping your dog cool in summer, however remember that unless the weather is continuous and excessive, your dog’s coat could actually be acting as an insulator and keeping it cool.

What to do? steps recommended by Dr Claire Stevens, NSW Veterinarian: 1

More water – 1 bowl is simply enough. General rule dogs require 70ml of water per kilogram of body weight daily.

2

Provide shady areas – Almost half of all pet owners leave their dogs in the back yard (PetSafe®, Survey). The dogs may have shady areas, but they also need to be cool. Not all dog houses are heat proof, and can become extremely hot in the summer.

3

Prepare your pet for summer – if the summer weather is predicted to have extreme and prolonged heat then consider clipping the coat for their comfort. For owners / breeders who need to maintain coat for showing and other activities, clipping may not be an option, so it is vitally important that these dogs are kept cool. It is recommended that you do your research on the clipping option as it may not be suitable for all breeds, particularly where the coat is specifically structured to keep the dog cool.

4

Exercise – We all need exercise, but in hot weather, keep the exercise routine to early morning or evening walks. Take care with hot bitumen or cement which can be harsh on their paws.

5

Digging? – Dogs often dig to keep cool.

6

Icy cold pet treats – Simple, just freeze their favourite treat and they will lick the flavoured treat to cool down.

7

How about a swim? – If your dog loves water he will really appreciate a dip in a shallow pool.

8

They need to move out of the sun – make sure your dog can move freely into cool and shady areas.

How do we know if our dog has heat stroke? According to a recent survey conducted by the PetSafe® brand Australia, 39% of Australians are unaware of the signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration, which can be deadly in the extreme heat of the Queensland summer. The American Kennel Council (AKC) has listed that some of the symptoms of Heatstroke are: • • • • • • • • • •

Heavy Panting Dehydration Body Temperature over 41 degrees Celsius Excessive drooling Red Gums Rapid or irregular heart rate Seizures Muscle Tremors Lack of Coordination (ataxia) Unconsciousness

Heat stroke is a serious concern for all dogs, and if you suspect your dog may be suffering from heat stroke, call your veterinarian immediately. Acknowledgements: • • •
