President’s Message

Perhaps it is because we are in a new decade but 2020 has had a full-on start, more generally, and in our dog world too. There has been lots happening on many fronts with so much worry about the changed weather patterns and the horrific fires. The extended dry causing drought like conditions with lots of fuel around has been the recipe for the disastrous fires that have occurred. Our hearts go out to those who have lost their loved ones and to those who have endured the extreme stress of losing so much in these unprecedented fires that have affected nearly every Australian State and Territory. Our firefighters have had to endure long and sustained shifts in trying to contain and extinguish this fire threat on so many fronts in many States. The impact on our unique wildlife has been horrendous. There have been quotes of between half a billion and a billion native animals destroyed. I know WIRE is doing wonderful work in NSW caring for injured wildlife through a well established network of carers. Donations directly support this care so I would encourage you to make donations through their website www.wires.org.au. Queensland has had the seasonal reputation of enduring weather extremes but has been relatively blessed with some rain happening as I am writing this in mid-January. I know that lots can happen in the next few months but it does give us as Dogs Qld members the opportunity to provide financial and other support to the members of other dog bodies less fortunate than us. On the fundraising front, I would encourage you to support the Dogs Victoria Virtual Show with those funds being raised to support their members impacted by the fires. It would be great to see our Queensland dogs well represented in this show. It is my understanding that this virtual show is being listed on Show Manager as well as Easydog to make it easier for you to add these virtual entries to your shopping basket for forthcoming “reality shows”. Let’s make sure this Victorian event is a great success.

And on that front, don’t forget to get your entries in for our virtual and real Qld fundraiser events to benefit those affected ANKC members impacted by the fires. To this end we have the Dogs Queensland Bush Fire Relief Virtual Dogs Sports event with online entries closing on 29 February. You will find details of this event on Show Manager and K9 Entries. Great to see our sporting disciplines stepping up to the plate with this event. It would be lovely to see lots of our show dogs as well entered in a choice of 15 different classes and disciplines ranging from the new Trick Dog event through to established disciplines like Agility and Obedience. Thanks to Barb and Lawrie and Coral for spearheading this initiative. February’s heat and the short time frames made a virtual show the best option for our sporting disciplines. We are looking to make our Dogs Qld Bushfire Benefit Shows on 29 February and 1 March a very special fundraising event benefiting fire affected ANKC members with no less than 3 Championship Shows. This weekend will have a truly national flavour with pretty well each Australian State and Territory dog body contributing a judge largely at their own expense to judge at these shows. Our judges are forgoing judging fees and we are lining up an array of sponsors. Keep an eye on Paw Prints for the latest news on these shows. And thanks to those who have made contributions to the container shipped free of charge by Kent Removals to Dogs Victoria. This has been a most appreciated initiative and another example of the generosity of our members.

ANKC NEWS Please note that the relevant document on the Dogs Queensland / ANKC Website has been amended or available where applicable; Amendment to Breed Standard – Azawakh As a result of advice received from the FCI and after consultation with the National Breed Standards Coordination Group Chairperson, Marie Merchant the breed standard for the Azawakh will be amended as follows. Currently reads: Colour: Fawn, with or without brindles, with white patching limited to the extremities. All shades are admitted, clear sand to dark fawn (mahogany). Brindles should be black as excluding any other shade. The muzzle can present a black mask. White patching: The blaze is very inconstant. On the fore chest, white may be present as white patches, more or less extensively, confined to the base of the neck. The bib should not extend past the point of the shoulder, or go up on each side of the neck. A small white spot on the nape of the neck, of reduced size, is tolerated. As a continuation of the fore chest, white spots can appear below the chest, but must not in any case go up the ribs. Each of the four limbs has a white stocking, at least as a trace on the feet. On a subject having excellent morphology, the lack of white on one limb is allowed. The white marks on the forequarters, often irregular, should not extend beyond the elbows,

or encroach on the shoulders. The white marks on the hindquarters, often more regular and less invasive, should not go up to the thigh. White marks appearing on the inner side of the thigh, however, should not be considered a fault. Breed Feature

THE BEAGLE

If you have ever been fortunate enough to own a Beagle, you may be familiar with the saying “once a Beagle owner, always a Beagle owner. Once this loveable, playful and laid-back breed works its way into your heart, they are there for life. The Beagle is often called the eternal puppy, as they are playful and fun loving their entire life. While this can sometimes make them a little mischievous, it can also make them an adorable companion for the fourteen or fifteen years they average for their life. Search the Internet and you will find hundreds of videos, images and stories of the antics of Beagles across the world. Beagles are excellent family pets, are very tolerant to young children and will play with kids for as

8

DOG WORLD February 2020

long as the kids want to play. In fact, Dr. Harry Cooper rates the Beagle highly as a family pet and a breed that is well-suited to young children. As the Beagle is a pack animal, their nature makes them an idea pet for a family. Your Beagle will basically do whatever you are doing. If you are out and about, walking, exercising or working, your Beagle will be right beside you. If you are sitting back and relaxing, your Beagle will often be found curled up under your chair, or on your lap.

The origins of the Beagle There is a range of historical documents about the Beagle and its true origin is open to speculation. What we do know is the breed has been around for centuries. Some theories of its origin date back to pre-Christian days where small hounds hunted by scent and were followed on foot and were likely to be the ancestors of the current Beagle. King Canute who reigned in the 10th Century introduced laws to stop certain dogs entering Crown forests, except for the “Veltever” as it was too small to harm the deer. This English hound was also called “Langehren” which meant longeared. It is thought that this reference was to the Beagle.

The collective term for a group is Beagles is a “Cry”. It may also be known in some circles as a “Bruhaha”. Among the traditional English hunting packs, the Foxhound hunt was always conducted from horseback, with the Huntsman wearing the traditional clothing of a red coat. Beagle packs were conducted from foot with the Huntsman in the traditional green coat colour. The coats would be trimmed with colours distinct to that pack.

Other theories have Beagles originating in Greece, with their descendants brought to Britain during the Roman occupation. In the middle ages in England, there were large numbers of hunting hounds for trailing hare. It is presumed that the smaller ones were Beagles. In the 14th Century, Edward II was a keen hunting enthusiast and hare hunting became a popular sport. King Henry VIII kept both Beagles and Buckhounds, while Queen Elizabeth I, in the 16th Century took great interest in sporting events. She had her own pack of pocket Beagles called “The Singing Beagles”. Other Royals to own Beagles included James I, William of Orange, George IV and Prince Albert who had a much-prized strain of rabbit Beagles.

Colouring of Beagles

Beagles on the hunt Original source: Lloyd. I (1854), “Beagling” Jenkins Publishing (UK).

There are many variations of colour of the Beagle and any hound colour is acceptable in the breed. The colour that most people relate to a Beagle is the “blanket” tricolour. This is a blending of black, tan and white, usually with a saddle of black on the back, tan legs and head, and a white blaze in the middle of their face. More and more in Australia, people are seeing tan and white Beagles, with no black colouring. This is a perfectly acceptable variation to the Beagle colouring and is often a stunning and beautiful colour for the breed.

DOG WORLD February 2020

9

Regardless of the colour, which has no impact on the nature of the Beagle itself, there is one mandatory colouring on any Beagle. The tip of their tail must always be white. This is known as their “flag” or stern and is used to locate the Beagle in tall grass. When a Beagle is on the move, they will have their nose down, their tail up and the white tip of their tail waving in the wind.

The only mandatory colour location on a Beagle is white on the tip of its tail (known as the flag). This is so the Beagle can be located in tall grass when they are hunting. Beagles at work Beagles are one of today’s most worked breeds, carrying out a range of functions relating to security, health, industry and entertainment. Currently, Beagles can be found in roles including: • Quarantine detection • Drug detection • Termite detection • Locating rare and endangered animals • Detecting imminent seizures in people who suffer from epilepsy • Health work including therapy dogs in schools and hospitals

• Media and entertainment (everyone has seen a movie, TV show or advertisement with a Beagle in it) • Beagles are now also being used to support the early detection of cancers and are even being trained to identify the specific type of cancer Unfortunately, due to their sound physical condition and gentle temperament, they are also one of the breeds most used in laboratory testing, with thousands of Beagles each year being used to test a wide range of products around the world, including within Australia.

Health Apart from overeating, Beagles have very few health issues and are considered to be a very sound breed. The most common health issues with Beagles relate to their eyes and ears. They can have a condition known as “dry eye” which is a relatively slow production of tears which can require the application of eye drops. Beagles can also get a condition called “cherry eye” which occurs when a gland around their eye pops out from under their eyelid. This can be corrected with surgery and neither condition is life threatening. As with any soft-eared breed, their ears need regular care. The ear canal on any soft-eared dog is like a little greenhouse and can be a haven for bacteria and yeast infections. A regular cleaning is important to keep the ear canal dry and healthy. Like all mammals Beagles are susceptible to mammalian diseases and conditions such as epilepsy, heart conditions and cancer which can occur in later life. Their hunting instincts require them to be active and persistent on the hunt. As a result, they are an active dog that does require exercise, preferably out of their environment where they can exercise their nose and mind as well as their body. Small back yards or townhouses are not the ideal environment for a Beagle, particularly if they do not get regular exercise. A good sized back yard and a regular walk will keep your Beagle healthy and happy. Using enrichment devices such as a

10

DOG WORLD February 2020

snuffle mat is ideal for a beagle, as it works their mind and nose for long periods.

Dr Sara Pitts BVSc. (Hons I), Dr Courtney Fuller BVSc. and Marnie Scheiwe BAppsc at Rosewood Vet Service are now offering Canine Reproduction services including:

Beagles love to go for walks and it is probably one of their greatest joys in their day (apart from eating). They can sniff all the new smells around the neighbourhood, in dog parks, along beaches or wherever you take them. They are never happier than with their nose down and their tail in the air. Regular activities beyond their typical environment will make the Beagle happy and healthy.

The Beagle as a pet The Beagle is quite a unique breed and as such, may require a special set of conditions as a family pet. As the Beagle was originally bred to hunt in a pack, they long for companionship. Being left on their own for long periods of time may make for an unhappy and often bored Beagle. A happy Beagle is one that has company for much of the day. The behaviours and traits bred in the Beagle for hunting carry over into the nature of the Beagle in their general lives and in sports they may undertake. Those who own Beagles will often talk about their Beagle “never getting their nose off the ground”, “barking frantically while they are sniffing” or “never walking in a straight line”. It is important to remember that these are desirable traits for the purpose of the breed and that the Beagle is happiest when they have their nose down, searching for a scent, their tails high.

As the nature of the Beagle is to keep their nose on the ground and to sniff everything in their path, it can be frustrating at times when you are wanting a nice leisurely walk yourself. Training will assist to alleviate this but keep in mind that this is what a Beagle is bred to do and is happiest doing.

The most powerful trait of the Beagle is their inquisitive mind and strong sense of smell. This is what made the breed such a useful hunting dog and what makes it such a useful working breed today. Beagles will want to smell anything and everything and always want to know what’s on the other side of the fence. Beagles will wander if they are able to and will love roaming the streets, seeking out new smells. A good high fence, secured at the bottom, is a must for a Beagle, as well as supporting responsible dog ownership. The fence should be at least 1.5 metres tall, as many Beagles will climb or jump a low fence. In days gone by, when Beagles were in a pack hunt, they were often away from home for long periods of time without being fed. As a result, their instinct now is to try and eat anything and everything whenever they can. Obesity in the breed is common as a Beagle will appear to be hungry even after a big meal. Many owners will tell you of stories of their Beagle eating whole roasts, working their way through a bag of dog food or even eating wedding cakes, only to turn around half an hour later looking for their dinner. A controlled balanced diet, along with regular exercise is most important for a Beagle. The rule of thumb is don’t wait for your Beagle to tell you when they are full because they will never tell you.

Training The nature of the Beagle makes them a dog that can certainly be trained but which has some specific requirements as part of their training program.

12

DOG WORLD February 2020

The Beagle’s sense of smell is their most acute sense and they rely on this as much as a human relies on their sight or hearing. When a Beagle is in a training program, often their instinct is to put their nose on the ground, find out what smells are around, and then pay attention to their trainer. To successfully train a Beagle it is most important for the Beagle to focus on the trainer. This can take a lot of work but must happen before any form of training can take place. One big advantage with a Beagle is that they are almost always very motivated by food. A Beagle will focus on their owner when they have food, so you can use food as a reward when training your Beagle.

Beagle Club of Queensland Inc. The Club’s mission is to “support the development and welfare, and undertake the promotion of the purebred Beagle within Queensland”. Your Dog’s Health:

DNA Genetic Testing

Michelle Fremaux, Director EPAGSC

Over the last 34 years, Massey University’s Equine Parentage and Animal genetic Services Centre has provided an internationally recognised and acknowledged parentage verification system for the thoroughbred and Standardbred industries. Key international links established with colleagues worldwide, mainly through the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG), has enabled the Centre to acquire an international profile and ensure testing systems in the EPAGSC fully meet defined international standards. Our Centre’s primary focus has been the provision of DNA profiles and parent verification to the major equine industries in NZ. We also provide genotyping and disease screening to approximately 30 other equine breed societies in NZ and Australia, the NZ beef cattle industry, and genotype for the NZ Alpaca Association. Other species we provide a DNA testing service for are Camelids, Avian, Ovine and Caprine.

Canine Genetic testing Dogs Queensland approached us to provide a genotyping service to their domestic clients. As a result, we have adapted and expanded our services to provide canine genotyping and a few specific canine genetic disease tests that are required for registration here in NZ. We were able to do this because we have the framework and capabilities to deal with thousands of samples, and our databases are adaptable to any species and number of clients/tests. There are two distinct branches to DNA testing.

EPAGSC ARE APPROVED SAMPLERS

It is important that if someone embarks on genetic testing they have a basic knowledge of autosomal recessive inheritance (i.e. – can do a punnet square), otherwise disease testing will not be of value to you. You can get advice from Dogs Qld or EPAGSC on this topic. In 2017, EPAGSC completed validation of canine genotyping using the ISAG recommended panel of 21 markers. During the set up and validation in our laboratory, we had a number of test cases where two dogs had access to the bitch. In some cases, all puppies were by the same sire, but in others, the litters were of mixed paternity. We could say with scientific certainty, which pups were from which sire.

• Genotyping, which provides parentage verification, often called `DNA Profiles’

Why produce a DNA profile (genotype) for an individual dog?

• DNA disease testing for various inherited diseases, like DM, EIC, and HUU. Disease testing is often marketed as `Breed Profiles’ – tests that are specific to a certain breed.

A DNA profile is useful as a means of identification for an individual dog. It is an effective and very accurate method for verifying the parentage of a litter.

14

DOG WORLD February 2020

It is very important when importing new breeding stock in to the country, that you have a DNA profile to compare against, so you know you are getting the correct animal. It also adds credibility to your breeding program, if you can send your exported dog or frozen semen sample overseas with a DNA profile or parentage verification report. In any breeding programme where the aim is genetic gain for whatever traits are selected for or against; an accurate pedigree is essential. DNA profiles are used in this way by comparing the profiles of sires, dams against offspring to ensure that they share common genetic material; thus, verifying a given pedigree. `Clear by parentage’ means nothing if the parentage is incorrect. While breeders want to select for desirable traits, it is important to keep in mind that extreme levels of selection can lead to decreases in genetic diversity in the breed population. Likewise, increased inbreeding with all of the accompanying problems will increase the frequency of undesirable traits or diseases within the breed population.

How do we produce a DNA profile or genotype for an individual? The processes are the same as those used in human forensics. Firstly, we need a source of DNA from the dog. We can use hair follicles/blood/ buccal swabs or semen, as our testing methods are already set up to handle these sources of DNA from other species. • The sample is given an individual lab/accession number

Every animal has two alleles for each of the markers – one of which is been inherited from the dam and the other from the sire. If a pup has an allele for any of the markers that does not occur in either parent, a secondary panel of markers are used to check the samples against as well. If there are still alleles in the offspring that are not present in the parents, then the parent/offspring relationship is excluded. However, if only one parent’s profile is available, the accuracy and ability to prove parentage changes. It should be noted that parentage exclusions are 100% accurate, while parent verifications are not. If both parents’ profiles are available parent verification is around 99% accurate, but this drops to 95% if only one parent’s profile is available. Accuracy and ability to predict parentage also falls when potential sires, and dams used for breeding are closely related.

Canine disease-screening tests. Rather than looking at many markers in the DNA (like for a DNA profile), disease testing looks at one point in the DNA at a time. The test identifies what is `normal’ (or wildtype), for a breed, or if it is mutated and therefore can disrupt the usual job of that gene. Some mutations are Dominant and only need one copy of the mutation to have an effect on the gene, while others and Recessive, and one copy does not affect the gene; however, two copies of the recessive mutation does.

• The sample is treated to release DNA from the cells • The unique DNA markers for canine that we use in our profile (microsatellite markers) are tagged with fluorescent dye • The sample is amplified to produce millions of copies of each of the markers • A machine detects and separates all the different DNA markers, by their particular fluorescent dye tag • A computer analyses the size variants or alleles for all markers.

EPAGSC SEQUENCER FOR GENOTYPING

DOG WORLD February 2020

We subcontract to a `partner lab’ in Europe for testing disease traits. They have validated all of the disease traits currently available and are leaders in the world of animal genetic testing. What this means is that if you want genotyping (parentage) and a test we don’t do, only one sample submission is needed and we will `on send’ the sample for you to get all of your tests done. This process of subcontracting is standard practice, so be aware that any lab you send your samples to, may or may not be doing the actual testing on site.

Why do we do only some tests and not others? We have started with some common disease screening tests and can add more if demand shows that it would be beneficial to our clients. Some of the disease mutations are only available to test through the lab that did SAMPLE PREPARATION the research on them, so are `intellectual property’ for that lab. Others are `marker tests’, which test for a genetic variant that is linked to, or associated with, the underlying disease gene/ mutation. This means the genetic disease could develop, but not necessarily will develop. Usually more research is being done on these diseases to find the causative mutation. EPAGSC also have the technology to `SNP test’, which produces results for thousands of markers in the canine genome. This means that once validated, we will be able to offer a genotype and some/all disease-screening tests for your specific breed in one test. EPAGSC are excited to provide canine DNA testing to dog breeders, and look forward to working together in giving owners informed choices for responsible breeding. DNA EXTRACTION MACHINE

• Samples should be taken by a vet or approved sampler – some laboratories have their own approved sampler schemes. This eliminates any question about the ID of the animal that the sample came from, as it verifies the dog against the microchip number or distinct markings if not microchipped. Our centre has approved sampler status. • Some owners choose to take and submit samples themselves, as the results are for their own interest to use for their breeding programs. This can help sort out what offspring to keep for breeding or to sell as pets only. However, if they want to use these results for registration, their nominated registry may not be happy to use the results from these samples and they may require resampling. • We can accept `Imported Profiles’ from other ISAG accredited laboratories to parentage verify your dogs. Unfortunately, non-ISAG recommended profiles are not compatible with our parentage verification system. ISAG refers to the International Society for Animal Genetics. STRmicrosatellite profiles are currently not compatible with SNP profiles. • Access to the Centre is by security keypad at all times, and entry to authorised personnel only – the Director of the Centre and technical staff members. • EPAGSC operates as a Transitional Facility under the approval of MPI, licensed for the Importation of Animal Products, facility number 946, with the Director of the Centre as the Approved Operator.

An Introduction To

Trick Dog is a new ANKC discipline with the rules being introduced in January 2020. This exciting new sport was developed by the ANKC National Dances With Dogs Committee so that people could have the opportunity to get something out of teaching their dog “Fun things to do in a very positive environment and a very positive way. There is even the availability of offering the dog rewards during the test for the first couple of classes. This is a first for our Dog Sports disciplines.

DOG WORLD February 2020

Trick Dog in Queensland In the meantime, many of our members and Clubs have been training for the event and conducting Mock Tests so that our members have had the opportunity to have a try before the real event. There is immense excitement about this new sport which we are hoping will attract new members to our dog world. Trick Dog Tests commence at the Starter Class. The handler selects 6 tricks which the dog enjoys doing from a list of 15 and, after training, the handler and dog team are able to compete to gain their Trick Dog Starter title and get letters behind their name. After the Starter class there are three more classes. The next one is Novice which requires the dog to complete 8 tricks from the supplied list of 20 tricks. Then the Intermediate class requires higher skills and more tricks to qualify. The last class is Advanced where the team have the opportunity to introduce a trick of their own choice along with the required more higher skilled tricks. Tricks are a fun way of strengthening the relationship and bond with your dog; they can be simply an extension of basic obedience training or can be the foundation for a fun path to other sports in the future for handlers and their dogs. If you are interested in this new sport, a “Trick Dog Training Manual has been developed and is being sold by the Dances with Dogs Club Qld – just email dwdcq@live.com.au to find out more.

Dogs Queensland Dances With Dogs members are conducting the inaugural Test on the 16th February 2020 and this will be held at our Durack grounds. We would love to see you there so that you may see for yourselves how much fun you can have with your dog. Barb Murfet Chair ANKC National DWD (and Trick Dog)Committee

Vehicle Trauma Joanne Bibby – Fursafe

A traumatic injury, for the purposes of this article, refers to physical injuries sustained by a dog, and the severity of those injuries, after being hit by a vehicle. Anything motorised, and some man-powered, vehicles are high risk for a dog who is off leash on the roads, pathways or on tracks. For example: • Motor Vehicle • All-terrain Vehicle (ATV) • Motorbikes, Scooters • Motorised Skateboards and Bicycles

Safety Precautions Some precautions you could consider: • Ensure the collar or harness fits securely • Train dog not to chew through leash, or put a barrier on the leash • Make sure fences are high enough to prevent dog from jumping over and in good condition

It’s often said that the greater the speed the more severe the injury; however, where dogs, as with children are concerned, a dog can just as easily die if hit or travelled over at a slow walking speed.

• Put guards below fence line to stop dog from digging under and escaping

A dog who is hit by a moving vehicle will endure potentially life threatening injuries; by way of:

• Keep dog on short leash when walking on footpaths if close to road side

• Blunt force trauma;

• Place dog on leash before answering the front door if your dog is at risk of running out the door

• Walk dog next to you when crossing the road

• A penetrating / embedded object

• Either block dog from driveway or take a routine walk around the car before ever pulling out of the driveway

Risk of Injury

• Only allow your dog to walk off leash in designated off leash zones

• Fall from height; or

Your dog is at risk of injury if he/she: • Is able to get off their leash while out walking • Escapes the backyard and wanders the neighbourhood • Manages to run out the front door and onto a busy road • Has a habit of chasing cars • Walks too close to the edge of the road • Gets too far ahead of you when crossing the road

Signs & Symptoms It is your job as a dog owner to provide immediate medical attention; your quick action may not only help reduce your dog’s pain and suffering, but it could also mean the difference between life and death. You may see the following signs and symptoms on a dog who has been in a vehicle accident: • Head trauma

• Sleeps on the driveway of your home

• Disorientated, confused

• Has free access to play or walk on driveway and walks behind a reversing car

• Stumbling or falling over, lameness

How to prevent an upset stomach in your dog Royal Canin

Upset stomachs are something all dogs will experience in their lifetime, but there are plenty of ways for you to support their digestive health and prevent them suffering from this issue too often. Every dog may occasionally suffer from an upset stomach, but your dog’s age, breed, size and lifestyle can make it more prone to this issue than most. Luckily, there are ways you can help prevent an upset stomach and maintain a healthy digestive system in your pet at each stage in their life.

Your dog’s digestion The healthy functioning of the digestive system in your dog is crucial in making sure they are absorbing all the nutrients they need from their food. The huge surface area of the small intestine is covered in cells which aid in absorbing vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, and also has the largest number of immune cells in the body. The whole gastrointestinal tract is home to microflora; bacteria that help support a healthy digestive environment and these bacteria can be affected by the food your dog eats.

38

DOG WORLD February 2020

What are the symptoms of an upset stomach in dogs? If your dog has an upset stomach, they may suffer from diarrhoea – soft and unformed stools – as well as vomiting. They may also express discomfort or have abdominal distention. Chronic digestive problems are also accompanied by symptoms such as weight loss and a lacklustre coat.

Preventing upset stomachs in puppies Puppies are particularly prone to upset stomachs and diarrhoea. Their digestive system is not yet fully matured. They also have an ‘immunity gap’, where the puppy’s immune system is no longer protected by antibodies gained from their mother, but they have yet to produce their own antibodies effectively. An upset stomach in puppies under three weeks old can also indicate more serious illnesses which can be fatal.

You can support your puppy’s digestive health by giving them a food with nutrients to support digestive health and avoiding changing their food too quickly. You should also make sure to get your puppy vaccinated when advised to do so by your vet.

Preventing upset stomachs in adult dogs Adult dogs have more robust digestive systems than puppies, but they still may suffer from upset stomachs. In particular, larger breed dogs such as German Shepherds, Great Danes and English Setters are predisposed to stomach problems. The best way to prevent an upset stomach in your adult dog is to feed it a nutritionally-balanced diet which includes high-quality, easily-digestible proteins as well as components like fermentable fibres which promote the development of ‘beneficial bacteria’. Human food isn’t suitable for dogs. It is difficult for them to digest, is not complete and balanced for dogs, and can cause stomach upsets, particularly if it is high in fat.

Preventing an upset stomach in mature dogs As your dog ages, their ability to properly digest their food can lessen, and they may struggle to chew effectively as their teeth become more sensitive. Improperly chewed food, or gulping down too much, too quickly, can then cause vomiting or discomfort. If they suffer from any chronic illnesses, these can also have an impact on the effective functioning of their digestive system. To make sure your older dog doesn’t suffer from an upset stomach, give them a food which is designed for their breed and age, with the right size kibble or pieces so it’s easy for them to grasp. This will encourage them to chew their food. You can also feed them several small meals each day to lessen the impact on their digestive system. Providing your pet with a good diet that’s right for their age, size, breed and lifestyle is one of the simplest ways to help prevent digestive upsets. However, if you notice any significant changes in your dog’s eating behaviour, make sure to visit your vet as these can be indicators of underlying health problems.

• Transcervical insemination with fresh, chilled and frozen semen. • Semen collection and freezing. • In-house progesterone testing - results in 20 minutes. • Dog and bitch fertility assessment and much more.
