The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for April 2018 On the 28th of March, the 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Canine Control Council (Queensland) Ltd was held at Durack. The meeting was well attended by members, and I would like to thank everyone who came along and provided their input. For the first time, the AGM was live streamed to the membership. We had quite a few members jump on to the live stream, which was great to see. The office has also received some feedback about certain aspects of the live stream, which they will be looking into for any further presentations or meetings that we are going to stream for the membership. New CEO Brian Menke also gave a presentation on past, present and future financial performance that was very well received by all Members in attendance. Dog World Magazine One of the topics that was covered in the CEO’s presentation, was moving the Dog World magazine from a monthly publication, to quarterly. The next release of the Dog World will be in June, followed then by September and December. It was also raised that the publication will be completely digital going forward. Where members wish to have a hard copy of the magazine, they will be required to pay a small extra fee per issue. The rationale behind this approach is due to the massive cost saving Dogs Queensland will make from these changes, and as it is good fiscal strategy for the organisation. All schedules and other important information will be made available in the weekly ‘Paw Prints’ emails which are sent to all members. ANZAC Day Show Just a reminder to all members, that Dogs Queensland will hold its second ever ANZAC day show this month. The committee for the ANZAC day show has once again been working very hard to organise the show, I would like to thank each and every member of this committee for their efforts. The ANZAC day dusk service itself is proudly supported by the RSL Forest Lake Sub Branch and Dogs Queensland. I hope members will get behind this event, and support this very worthwhile cause. Ekka Entries By the time members are reading this message, the entries for the 2018 Brisbane Royal will nearly be open, Entries Open 16th April 2018 and will close on 25th June 2018. More information regarding the event is published in this magazine.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
The Australian Silky Terrier
Pet Facts This affectionate and sociable breed is a tenacious ratter and protector of the household. Origin: Australia! There are numerous theories about the origins of the Australian Silky Terrier, each of which may have some credence. All theories however, agree that this energetic little dog with a huge personality is a true Australian bred dog of the Toy Group. Although there are limited records about the development of this wonderful little companion dog all agree that the ‘Silky – as it is referred to today’ developed from the original terriers brought to Australia in the Colonial days. Through those early canine inhabitants to Australia, the Rough Coated Terrier was developed, then the Australian Terrier appeared and then finally to the Silky Terrier. The development of this breed was claimed by Sydney and was promptly called the Sydney Silky, but in 1959 the Silky was fully recognised as a breed and was given the name ‘Australian Silky Terrier’. The breed is popular in many countries and even today breeders receive worldwide requests for Sydney Silkies, even though the correct name is the Australian Silky Terrier.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Height Range: 23cm to 26cm Weight Range: Approx 4.5 - 6kg Life Span: 12 - 15 years Grooming Requirements: Regular grooming (brushing) is required to keep this long silky coat tangle free. The Australian Silky Terrier has two seasonal moults, but little hair is dropped making this breed ideal for a household with allergies. If the grooming regime is started at an early age, the ‘Silky’ loves being groomed and will enjoy the pampering.
Appearance:
The breed is popular in many countries and even today, breeders receive worldwide requests for Sydney Silkies, even though the correct name is the Australian Silky Terrier
Compact and moderately lowset with refined and sufficient structure to suggest the ability to hunt domestic rodents. Straight silky hair presenting a well-groomed appearance.
Head: Strong and of Terrier character, strong flat skull, black nose, small bright and dark eyes, a scissor bite with even teeth.
Ears: Small, pricked and set high on skull, V shaped.
Neck: Medium length, refined and slightly crested with long silky hair.
Body: Moderately long in proportion to height, level topline. Chest of moderate length and depth.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Legs: Forequarters/shoulders are straight and well angulated upper arms. Hindquarters have well developed thighs, stifles well turned and the hock well bent. Feet are well padded, small and neat, black or dark toenails.
Coat: Must be fine, long, glossy and of silky texture, length preferably not less than 15 centimetres but not too long as to impede the movement and to allow daylight to be seen under the dog.
Did you know? It is not known why the Silky (Terrier) was developed away from the Australian Terrier. In medieval times, toy dogs were developed from larger breeds, perhaps as vermin killers or a ladies companion. BUT… Did you know, that they were also selectively bred to include the task of attracting fleas away from their owner. A notation in a book written in 1486 by Dame Julia Berners, “Female ladies popis that beere a Way to the flees” pays reference to this unusual purpose.
Colour:
A curious practice for Toy dogs!
Blue and Tan or Grey-blue and tan.
Source: The complete book of Australian Dogs, Angela Sanderson, The Currawong Press 1987, P31 - 32
Characteristics and Temperament: The long fine coat and generally elegant appearance of this breed should not disguise the fact that the Australian Silky Terrier is a terrier in every sense! They are keen, alert and active which makes for a friendly companion for the owner and their family. The Australian Silky Terrier is a toy dog but is not the usual lap dog. It has all the smart and forceful characteristics of a terrier. Bred as a housedog, this feisty little dog is also at home in the country protecting the household from rodents and snakes with the tenacity of its terrier background.

he Australian Silky Terrier, as its name says, was developed in Australia around
the turn of the century. Its exact origins are unknown but many consider the silky to be bred from the early Rough Coated Terriers which later developed into the Australian Terrier and the Australian Silky Terrier by selective breeding. There are records showing that some Australian Silky Terriers were registered as a cross between the Australian Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier but this was prohibited by the 1930’s. Originally known as, and commonly called today, the Sydney Silky Terrier standard was first published in 1908 and the name Australian Silky Terrier adopted in 1956. The Australian Silky Terrier, as its name says, was developed in Australia around the turn of the century. Its exact origins are unknown but many consider the silky to be bred from the early Rough Coated Terriers which later developed into the Australian Terrier and the Australian Silky Terrier by selective breeding. There are records showing that some Australian Silky Terriers were registered as a cross between the Australian Terrier and the Yorkshire Terrier but this was prohibited by the 1930s. Originally known as, and commonly called today, the Sydney Silky Terrier standard was first published in 1908 and the name Australian Silky Terrier adopted in 1956. This iconic figure of the 1980s, a dog that every child in Australia grew up with, is most easily recognized by its long flowing coat which gives it a well-groomed appearance. The coat should be flat, fine, silky and feel cool to the touch. The colour varies significantly from animal to animal, with all shades of blue, ranging from a light silver-blue to a dark steel blue being accepted but the richer the colour the better. The head, the ears and down the stifles and from the knees and hocks to the toes as well as around the vent should be tan in colour. A silver or fawn topknot is highly desirable and it should be free from smuttiness.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Puppies are born black and tan but the blue should be developed by 18 months. Various lines have different coat colour development patterns with some lines staying dark for a long time and then gradually lightening while other lines will lighten quickly and then after 18 months of age the colour will start to become richer. In some lines the tan will first be a creamy colour with darker roots and with maturity will darken.
Three month old puppies
13
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World Over the years there have been many discussions as to the length of the coat with various opinions and interpretations of the breed standard. The one thing that is certain is that “the length of coat must not be so long as to impede the dog's action and should allow daylight to be seen under the dog”. Colour development in a 5 month old puppy
The muzzle must be strong, with the length of the muzzle being 2/5 of the length from the tip of the nose to the occiput. Being a terrier the bite must be a correct scissor bite with no crowding of the teeth and full dentition allowing the silky to do what it was bred for – hunt and kill rodents. A lighter shade of blue and tan but still correct colour
As the name suggests, the silky is a true terrier not only in spirit but also in structure. The body is moderately long with sufficient substance, the forelegs straight and set well under the body without the toes turning out, the thighs strong and the stifles well turned. This gives the dog smooth movement with good reach and drive and sufficient speed to hunt rodents. Small, dark oval eyes with a keen and intelligent expression and without fullness between them as well as high set V shaped ears on a strong, moderately broad and long head give the silky its typical terrier appearance. An alert 18 month old Australian Silky Terrier with fully developed colour, a level topline and forelegs set well under the body
The neck should be moderately long and slightly crested fitting gracefully into well laid back shoulders. The topline should be level at all times, both when stationary and on the move. A dip or a roach in the topline is considered a serious fault. With the banning of tail docking the silky is now shown with a long tail that must be set high between 12 and 2 o’clock and carried erect or slightly curved but it should not be curly. The standard calls for the tail to be free of feathering but this does not imply the tail should be shaved or stripped of all hair. To maintain a balanced appearance with the body coat 15 - 30mm of feathering is desirable as opposed to a stripped tail which looks unbalanced or a tail with excessively long feathering resembling the Yorkshire terrier. Though small in size, the silky is neither delicate in form nor in character. Its manner is quick and responsive but should never be shy or excessively nervous. Being a terrier, they were originally bred as watch dogs and rodent killers and still possess the alertness and protectiveness so typical of a terrier. Together with their high intelligence, they can get into a lot of mischief if left to their own devices.

They love being close to their family members but at the same time prefer not to sit in a lap all day making them the ideal choice for the busy lifestyles This dog displays a rich shade of blue and tan
The silky was once a favoured choice as a family pet not only because it was an iconic Australian breed but also because of its temperament. Its inquisitive nature and joy for life made them an excellent friend for children while their protectiveness and alertness brought ease of mind to parents when their children were playing outside knowing that no stranger could approach without being warned off and other forms of danger such as snakes kept at bay. In 1993, Fizo the Australian Silky Terrier became the first dog in Australia to receive the purple cross for bravery awarded by the RSPCA for protecting the life of an 11 year old girl by attacking and killing a brown snake. Their highly adaptable character makes them just as happy living in a one bedroom unit, sharing that space with a single person, as living on acreage in a lively household. Even though small in body silkies are far from your average lap dog. They are highly loyal but also very independent and consider themselves to be of equal standing. They love being close to their family members but at the same time prefer not to sit in a lap all day making them the ideal choice for the busy lifestyles of today.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Even though they are small in size, have an eye-catching appearance, outgoing temperament, silky coat that does not shed and they are hypoallergenic, the number of silkies being born has drastically decreased from 2567 puppies registered with the ANKC in 1987 to an all time low of just 134 puppies registered in 2016. Because the gene pool has become so small more and more health issues are becoming apparent in the breed. Some of these are juvenile cataracts, progressive rode cone dystrophy, epilepsy, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and luxating patellas but with selective and careful breeding hopefully these issues will be eliminated. The decrease in numbers can be attributed to many factors such as the introduction of rare breeds and the all time favourite 'designer dogs'. This decrease is slow but progressive and it would be very sad to see this brave little Australian dog forgotten.

The Journey
&
of a Boy
one very special Black Lab Written by Holly Norbury
rae is a 16year old boy who has a rare medical condition that is best described as excess bone growth that affects joints on the left side of his body. I won’t go into the nitty gritty of this medical condition as it becomes very scientific and sometimes hard to explain, so I’ll give you the brief simple over view but please don’t dismiss the overwhelming affects this condition has put him through from the age of 15 months. Over his life he has had an estimated 30 something surgeries and many extended stays in hospitals; nothing to say the amount of recovery time from these procedures. As a result of this condition and extensive surgeries, Trae has had the bones in his left leg replaced with an internal growing robotic prosthesis; medically he is seen as an above the knee amputee but he still has his own foot and hip joint. Hard to wrap your head around, that’s ok, I understand this is why I only touched on the medical side briefly. But I ask you to understand the following so you can comprehend just how having a service dog has impacted Trae’s life in such a positive manner. Trae, growing up has spent not just extended months in hospital being poked and prodded by medical staff but also long periods of recovery that can become very lonely and impact on your mental health along with all those feelings of ‘why me’. These experiences are all ones that exposed Trae at a young age to trauma that most children will never experience.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
I must add at this point that Trae is a true battler and does not spend his days walking around with a chip on his shoulder feeling like he is owed something. He is a true inspiration and never gives up, facing every challenge head on and does so with a smile that is truly infectious. At this stage I ask you to think about when you were 16 years old wanting some independence, going out with friends, not having a carer as your shadow. Well up till now although Trae was able to walk and get around most times unaided by wheelchairs and crutches these things have been and will continue to be a large part of his life due to the fact that he is terribly unsteady and struggles immensely in crowds. Sitting at coffee shop or any public place always produced many obstacles for Trae to overcome.
17
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
His left leg to the passer by looks the same as most others although a lot slimmer in size from his right and if you were not paying too much attention you probably would dismiss his awkward walk also.
Pozer’s full name is Blackhills Imposing (IMP NZL) He was donated by Margaret Wedgwood of Dogs Queensland, and is the ever so special black lab introduced into Trae’s life. He has had the following positive impact on Trae’s life.
Towards the end of 2017 Bob Richards from the RSL Forest Lake PHU Program (Paws for Hope & Understanding) along with Hannah Richards, head trainer from RSL Forest Lake PHU program started the search for a suitable dog to become the companion that would allow Trae to continue his growth into a young man with the independence that comes with age. Introducing Pozer bred by NZ breeder Trisha Hallmond of Blackhills Labrador Retrievers.
It’s been a journey so far of nothing but admiration for what these amazing animals and the positive changes they can have in someone’s life. Pozer has allowed Trae to build confidence in crowds and independence in all public places.
18
He now moves around these venues without getting stuck in shop doorways unable to enter the traffic passing by or being bumped or knocked that resulted
in masses amounts of pain. Note; Trae has had the prosthetic replaced 4 times in his leg from falls or bumps as it is extremely fragile and this has also led Trae to be very protective of it and often choosing not to participate in things for the risk it exposed him to. With the introduction of Pozer to Trae's daily life, everyone has commented on the added confidence to participate in outings and interactions with his peers in public venues. Pozer trained by Hannah of Forest Lake PHU program is trained to protect Trae’s left side by always providing a barrier between his leg and other obstacles.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
When Trae is sitting Pozer sits or lays along his leg previously people without realising would step over his leg or bump it causing pain or trauma not only physically but mentally, these situation would previously make Trae think about the environment and was it worth being in or participating in the activity. Don’t get me wrong Trae was, and is, an outgoing teen but these incidents although small and insignificant to you had huge impacts on Trae’s day to day life both physically and mentally. Pozer also provides Trae with help for spatial awareness and stability when manoeuvring through areas. From a young age children develop spatial awareness and this was something that has been severally impacted by the amount of surgery and rehabilitation that Trae has experienced in his life.
Once again I ask you to think about when you’re out at the shops or in a crowd. You see a toddler tagging along with their parent and you move out of their way to allow space for them to pass often with a smile down at them as their little legs trot and stumble along. Now think about the reaction you have as children are older and how much you move for them, let’s be honest as they age we, as society create less and less space as children age. There even becomes an age when we expect them to move for us, this scenario happens in a similar way for children with a physical impairment but the spaces created for them to move are often bigger and the age of the child and space provided does not follow the same pattern. This means that children who have experienced more time using aids to get around don’t develop spatial awareness skills in the same manner. Please keep in mind this is a very brief overview. Just something to get you thinking about how Pozer, the very special black lab, assists Trae in monumental ways that you probably didn’t realise.
This would not be a complete story without touching on the massive achievements Trae has made within the Para and Multi class swimming within Australia. Trae started swimming as a rehabilitation activity to learn to walk as water is non-intrusive. Trae swims at a national level and has participated at many events throughout Australia. His most recent accomplishment was competing at the Para Commonwealth swim trials held on the Gold Coast. Pozer was there on pool deck to support him through this once in a life time experience. The support that Pozer provided at this event allowed Trae to not only achieve 3 final swims that has him ranked 4 in Australia in those events competed at this competition but to not need a carer to help him manoeuvre through the often very busy complex. This was just the beginning for Trae and Pozer’s swimming career into the elite level of Para swimming. This is an inspirational story to continue to follow as it’s really only just the beginning chapters.
At this stage I will end this story here but will not say finish as I truly believe there will be many more chapters to write in the journey ahead for both Trae and his very special black Lab Pozer. But I could not stop writing without thanking all the magnificent people who played such important roles in bringing these two together. Bob Richards, Hannah Richards, Margaret Wedgwood trainer and esteemed member of Dogs Queensland and RSL Forest Lake PHU program, for their ongoing support and commitment, supportive staff at St Edmunds College Ipswich, Western Aquatics swim club, Heath Ramsey Swim Coach and Swimming Australia. This amazing life changing partnership would not have been possible without all your support and hard work. Thank you.
