President’s Message

“I

knew that I had this message to write but I could not resist watching the first Presidential Trump/Biden Debate today. I don’t think we quite knew what to expect but I did not think it would be such a negative event marked by interruptions and insults by both candidates speaking over each other. Sadly, it seems to be a very divided society with big COVID-19 issues and we can only hope things improve in the USA. The next few months will be very interesting. Australia is doing comparatively well on the COVID-19 front and it is great to see the border closures gradually relaxing and the situation in Victoria improving. It has been a big strain on Melbournians particularly with the long term shut down. It is good to see them tracking in the right direction. Members will have noted the relaxation on numbers at outside events from 500 to 1000 where a COVID plan is in place. It is great that this relaxation applies to Dogs Queensland as we do have a Covid plan in place. I have noted some comments on social media hoping and anticipating that the cap of 100 entries per group at Championship Shows at Durack will be lifted as a consequence of this development. Unfortunately, I cannot see this happening for the foreseeable future. Those attending recent shows will have noted that we have an extra layer of COVID requirements to meet at these show days. Traffic is regulated through the grounds, additional personnel are required for a range of tasks ranging from interviewing every person on entry and taking temperatures through to sanitation in the rings and toilets and other common areas and ensuring COVID compliance during the course of the event or events. The necessary staggered timing for judging of groups adds to the complexity of administration and resourcing. It has been great that we have had a number of Durack open and Specialty Show days and Judges Hands On Examination days to implement these

requirements and to fine tune our procedures. These events have been people and other resource intensive and the reality is, that although we are blessed with 52 acres and extensive conformation and dog sports rings, we need to contain numbers to a level that we can practically manage with providing and resourcing properly trained personnel. And we are currently at that limit with 100 entries per group. A learning from the recent Specialty Show weekend is the proven need to have a COVID officer on each show or event ring who reports to the COVID Compliance Officer on the grounds. It is impossible for the COVID Compliance officer, even with the assistance of the Show Manager/s, to keep an eye on everything. So, this measure should assist. Also, I was interested to hear that Dogs NSW recently bought a golf buggy and that this was found to be a great asset last weekend in enhancing mobility for their show officials and COVID Compliance officer in managing their event. This may be a good approach on our grounds too. I know that it is such a temptation to slip into the “old normal” routines at dog shows but it is so important for our collective health that we all abide by the social distancing requirements at our events, use hand sanitiser, obey the signage, wear masks when in the ring and listen to our officials. We all need to take some responsibility on this front, and all going well we will have more events to enjoy for the remainder of this year and into 2021. There has been understandable concern in our regions that the conformation show events held by Dogs Queensland have been limited to the Durack Showgrounds to date. Clubs in Zone 2 and Zone 3 have of course been invited to submit

DOG WORLD October 2020

5

show proposals to the office but the need for these clubs to comply with this additional layer of COVID requirements has no doubt been a disincentive. But there is good news. Discussions are underway with a view to scheduling one All Breeds Championship Show in Zone 3 in November and one in Zone 2 in the near future. It is hoped that Dogs Queensland can partner with one or more clubs in each zone with a view to sharing our learned expertise in running a COVID compliant show and helping resource these events. Both the office and the Directors are keen to be actively involved. We will keep you updated on developments so keep an eye on Paw Prints. Stay safe.

LURE COURSING FIELD UPDATE On-going maintenance work on the Lure Coursing Field at Durack has seen approximately 200 meters of irrigation lines recently laid. When completed, the pipes will connect to the main bore and aid in the continuing up-keep of the grounds. Due to the stabilisation of earth works, the field is now home to an additional 60,000 tonnes of fill with another 20-30,000 tonnes required to complete the project. A sincere thank you to the tireless work of volunteer Craig Drury and the Dogs Queensland grounds staff.

PAPILLON

Papillons are a dog for “all seasons and all reasons”, and they excel at obedience, agility and even flyball! They are consistent winners at dog sports’ highest levels.

8

DOG WORLD October 2020

The delightful Papillon has an illustrious history which dates back to around the late 13th century when a breed closely resembling the Papillon was depicted in numerous paintings, frescoes and tapestries. Papillons were originally bred specifically as companions for European Royalty and for hundreds of years this beautiful little breed were great favourites at the Royal courts. Famous admirers included Madame de Pompadour, Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. The French Queen was devoted to her Papillons and even took one of them, “Thisbe”, to the guillotine as she could not bear to be parted from him. “Thisbe” was handed to the executioner just before she was beheaded! King Henry III always slept with his Papillons and supposedly appeared before his council of state wearing a basket filled with Papillons around his neck! A favourite of renowned artists, Papillons are regularly found in works by the masters – by the likes of Rembrandt, Goya, Rubens, Fragonard, Titian and Toulouse-Lautrec. It can be fun to trace the history of this breed through artworks. You might like to start with Titian’s the “Venus of Urbino” (1477-1576), Velazquez’ “Prince Phillip Prosper” (1598-1660), de Jonghe’s “Portrait of a Boy” (1616-1679), and Murillo’s “Holy Family at Prajirata” (1618-1682). The breed is known as the Papillon due to the butterfly shape of their ears and ear fringing. Papillon translates to butterfly in French. However, not all Papillons have erect ears. The Phalene has fully dropped ears. The word Phalene translates to moth in French. The breed originally only had dropped ears and was called the “epagneul nain” or Dwarf Spaniel, and was also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, Royal Toy Spaniel, Little Squirrel Dog and Belgian Toy Spaniel. Whilst the exact origin of the Papillon is unknown, most historians agree that France, Belgium, Italy and Spain all had roles in the development of the modern Papillon.

They are easily trained and love learning new tricks. Papillons also are very sociable with other dogs and children. Papillons can be touchsensitive though and can be overwhelmed by any roughness and mischief of small children. Some Papillons can be reserved around strangers. As with all breeds, socialization is very important to build a confident attitude toward people. Don’t let their small size deceive you – this is a very robust little breed. Papillons have the spirit and energy to keep up with very active families but are also content sleeping in the arms of their favourite people. They have been very successful as therapy dogs in all areas of this important work due to their affinity with and love of people. A lovely breed with other dogs, Papillons won’t hesitate to engage larger dogs in play, so owners need to be aware of this. Papillons don’t know how small they are, and can easily be hurt by much larger animals. Papillons are a dog for “all seasons and all reasons”, and they excel at obedience, agility and even flyball! They are consistent winners at dog sports’ highest levels. A great video to watch is on youtube – https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=9lf0HGOcO40. The tiny Papillon “Fortune” won the 8 inch agility title at the Westminster Dog Show in 2020. “Unkas” a Papillon from Russia made the final of the Dog Dance World Championships in 2016 and

Bred to be the ultimate companion dog, Papillons are very affectionate, intelligent, self-assured and vivacious little dogs with great energy and enthusiasm for life. They are graceful, dainty and playful.

can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Tq9hwE-sSng. So easy and such fun to train, owners of Papillons delight in training them to do all manner of tricks at home. This breed makes an excellent house dog as they are light-footed and graceful in the house. However all toy dogs can be somewhat hard to house train. Papillons are no different than all the other toy dogs. While some Papillons learn the concept of toileting outside quickly, others can be more difficult in this matter. Papillon puppies can take quite some time before their system matures and can be difficult to fully house-train. Regular outside visits to toilet are a necessity for all new Papillon owners. Papillons are not considered a “yappy” breed, however can be an excellent little watchdog, and will certainly let their family know if strangers or visitors approach their home. Papillons have lightning-quick reflexes and care should be taken in the home when opening doors or gates – they will be through in a flash! They also retain some of the sporting instincts from their spaniel ancestors, and will stalk and pursue birds, lizards and even insects. They are not a breed to let off-leash at the dog park unless they are very well trained. The size of the Papillon ranges between 8 and 11 inches (20.3cm – 28cm) at the shoulder. Weight is not specified in the breed standard, but an adult is usually between 3.2kg – 4.5kg.

10

DOG WORLD October 2020

The Papillon is fundamentally a white dog with a mask of colour and colour patches on the body, which can be any shape or size, and any colour except liver. The most common colours are black, red and red-sable. Red colours range from palest lemon to rich red. Papillons can also be tri-coloured. This breed has a characteristic single coat with little or no undercoat and is therefore an easy dog to maintain. Weekly bathing and regular brushing are all that is need for a companion dog. Make sure you bath your Papillon in warm water as they can be sensitive to cold, and a good quality conditioner will ensure their silky coat stays in best condition. Care should always be taken with the delicate ear fringing though, as this easily becomes matted if not cared for. This is particularly true if you have more than one Papillon, as their delightful play games can result in matted ear fringing very quickly. The long tail is set high and carried over the back in a delightful silky plume. The silky long fine single coat also has an extra frill on the chest and back of the legs. The feet of the Papillon are very interesting – they are a “hare” shape, and should have silky hair protruding out between the toes. This breed tends to hate having their toenails trimmed, but this is an area that owners need to watch, as their toenails can grown quickly and cause discomfort if not trimmed regularly. Healthwise the Papillon has relatively few health issues to be concerned about. However, patellar

luxation and seizures do occur and they can be at risk of progressive retinal atrophy, intervertebral disk disease and allergies. Like many toy breeds, Papillons can be prone to dental issues, and owners should make sure they regularly check teeth and visit the Veterinarian yearly for dental checks whilst maintaining an oral care regime at home, including dental treats. Papillons are a very long-lived breed. The oldest recorded was named “Fred” and died in the UK just weeks short of this 29th birthday. Usually however, the life span of this delightful breed is between 14 and 16 years.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR CELINE FRERE AND DR ROMANE CRISTESCU

KOALA SEARCH TEAM Ready For Bushfire Season

With Australia’s bushfire season fast approaching, a team that specialises in finding koalas in fireravaged locations is gearing up for another huge effort. After last summer’s fires destroyed vast tracts of bushland across eastern Australia, USC’s Detection Dogs for Conservation team spent many days searching for surviving koalas using heatseeking drones and the now world-famous USC x International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) koala detection dog Bear. The detection dogs team, which was co-founded in 2015 by USC (University of the Sunshine Coast) researchers Associate Professor Celine Frere and Dr Romane Cristescu, searched for koalas across more than 5,000 hectares of land in partnership with IFAW. Dr Cristescu said the team was now bracing itself for another long summer of scouring scorched bushland.

12

DOG WORLD October 2020

“While it is unlikely that we will see bushfires to the scale of last year, we are still preparing for multiple fires that can impact many hectares of koala habitat during the next fire season – especially, this year, Queensland has higher than average risk of bushfires,” Dr Cristescu said. “We expect we might be called upon, with our partners at IFAW, by different wildlife rescue groups, to help them locate koalas - as with drones and dogs we can find many koalas that otherwise can escape the naked human eye. And in places such as QLD and NSW, where populations are already declining, every koala counts. “Last year we found koalas struggling with and dying from burns, dehydration and malnutrition weeks after the fires had been contained, and we were able to find help for them. That is why we are preparing now for the 2020-2021 season.” Bear, whose skills last year caught the attention of Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, is one of a team

of USC detection dogs. He has been specially trained to sniff out koalas by the scent of their fur, which enabled the team last fire season to locate more than 100 koalas, many of which needed help and were rescued. IFAW wildlife campaigner Josey Sharrad said postfire wildlife rescue was critical to koala survival. “Bear was our secret weapon during these fires. His ability to smell what we can’t see was crucial to locating survivors,” she said. “Many of the koalas that were rescued have now been released back into the wild after months of rehabilitation. With over 6,000 koalas perishing in New South Wales alone last bushfire season, every one that we can save counts towards the future survival of the species.” While koala detection dog Bear is deployed post-bushfire the other dogs, who specialise in detecting koala scat, are used outside of bushfireaffected areas.

Nomination forms may be downloaded from the Dogs Queensland website from 12 October 2020. Postal voting commences on Wednesday 20 January 2021, and closes at 5:00pm AEST on Friday 19 February 2021.

Voting is so important to the quality of your organisation! Plan to vote and encourage every member you know to do the same. This is YOUR organisation, it’s of YOU and for YOU. It is YOUR money that is being spent – running an election costs thousands of dollars, so why not use it? Of 6,297 members listed as eligible to vote in our last board election in February 2019 only 1349 did – that’s just 21.42% of our membership. We have an enormous pool of talent and knowledge in our membership so why not step up and nominate? YOU can and will make a difference for the better by getting involved, nominating and getting out the vote. Like many similar organisations we face a number of issues and we’re not just talking about the pandemic. Our membership is ageing and falling, so we need to grow our brand and reputation. DOG TALES CATLCAMP MATILDA “Tilly” (11.4.2006 – 24.2.2020)

– Tricia Court Tilly crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on 24th February, 2020. I thought I would write about her achievements and personality because not many of her breed (Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog) compete in dog sports. Starting her trialling career at 16 months, Tilly gained 18 titles in all – 4 in Obedience, 6 in Rally and 8 in Agility. She reached the top level in Snooker Dog, Gamblers Dog and Jumping Dog before her Agility, Jumping and Games career had to end in March 2015 because of a torn cruciate ligament. Tilly was competing successfully in Rally and Obedience at the top level until the end of 2018. Early in 2019 she developed Irritable Bowel Syndrome, then a short time later, was diagnosed with glaucoma and a mature cataract, leaving her blind in her right eye. A change of diet kept the IBS under control, but her eye problems meant Tilly would need eye drops up to five times a day for the rest of her life. Both eyes were treated to prevent the glaucoma affecting her left eye as well – a thing she coped with very well. I had to set a timer between putting in the drops and she got to the stage when she heard the timer go off she would come and sit in front of me waiting for the next drop to be put in. Tilly had a most wonderful personality, her

favourite things altogether were playing and food. Any sort of food would do. An accomplished thief, she once stole half a cabbage from the kitchen bench and ate the lot. Another time she jumped onto a morning tea table after guests had left and helped herself to a whole plate of biscuits. I’d keep things well away from the edge of the kitchen bench, but she developed a way of jumping up and turning sideways so she could get her head and neck as far as possible on to the bench, then with her tongue (which was as long as a giraffe’s) would try to reach whatever she was after. This method quite often proved successful. She also loved baby puppies and loved teaching them how to play with her. My friends would bring their young puppies around to play and she would adapt her play level to suit the age of the pup. Unfortunately after tearing her cruciate ligament, ball playing (another favourite pastime) had to be limited. To Tilly, trialling was also a game, and many a time I lost a qualifying score because of this. She’d return a seek back article at break neck speed only to spit it out in front of me, or fetch a dumbbell and then decide that if I wanted it, I’d have to chase her to get it! I might add that Tilly rarely did these things when training, which was quite frustrating, but that was Tilly and I loved her for it. I loved all the dogs I’ve owned, but there is always one that is special, and Tilly was that special once in a lifetime dog. She was also a very special dog to Helen Meharg who trialled Tilly for me in Agility, as she was far too fast for me to trial. In fact everything Tilly did was at flat out speed. In the latter years Helen trialled her in Masters Rally as well and they achieved 5 Championship qualifications. Tilly had two mothers that she loved and we were both by her side at the end.

Triple Trick Dog Test

SKY

It was very exciting to be a part of the first triple Trick Dog Test in far north Queensland. Not only were they the first tests for the region but the first in the whole of Queensland under COVID-19 conditions. Applause must be given to both the organisers and handlers. The event went very smoothly and credit to the handlers for being so organised in the performance of their run out. With the provision of a short workshop before the tests on how to act in the ring, what to expect from the judges, setting up equipment etc the handlers and stewards were very professional in the ring. The dogs demonstrated excellent work in their performance of the chosen tricks which was reflected in the scores achieved. While about 50 percent achieved their Starter title there were very few teams which did not achieve at least one and, in most cases, two qualifying scores, if not their title. These were amazing results especially considering the dogs were also entered in a triple Obedience and triple Rally O.

CODY

The trials and tests were spread over Friday evening, Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The evening events were both affected by rain, the afternoon event by strong winds and the morning event by a very warm sun. Handlers and dogs handled it all and gave of their best. Congratulations to DogzCairns organisers, workers and to all handlers and your incredible dogs. – Barb Murfet and Coral Pethers All images showcased on these pages have been kindly supplied by ‘Photos By Jess’. ALL BREEDS JUDGES

– JASON ATTRIDGE Growing up in a sporting family and with parents who showed dogs, it was no surprise that after purchasing a Jack Russell Terrier around 20 years ago I was bitten by the ‘Dog Show’ bug. It wasn’t until 2010 after my involvement in breed and All Breeds clubs that I decided to learn more about my passion and so in 2011 I commenced the Judges’ Training program, studying Group 2. Throughout the last 9 years I have been blessed to learn from some of the most knowledgeable judges, not just in Queensland or Australia, but world-wide. The time that others have invested in working with me, sharing their knowledge and letting me go over their dogs has truly humbled me and I’ve made so many invaluable friends. Gaining my All Breeds licence is not just the culmination of this learning but the beginning of a brand new stage in my judging journey – one where I can continue to learn whilst giving back to this wonderful hobby, however I can. There is no way here I can thank everyone individually who has been there for me, including group coordinators, assessors, mentors or support, but please know this would have not been possible without your generosity of time. Finally I want to thank my family for putting up with my studying and thank you Nadia for your unwavering support and belief in me. I look forward to this exciting new chapter in my ‘Dog Show’ life.

DOG WORLD October 2020

– LANCE WRIGHT I was born into the dog world with my parents exhibiting Pekingese, Cocker Spaniels and Italian Greyhounds. I became a successful junior handler very early. At 16 I owned my first show dog, a Toy Poodle female – Ch “Jutland Ooh La La” – who became a multi Best In Show winner in both All Breeds and Speciality show rings. This began my addiction to Poodles. Before long my parents and I had all three varieties which we successfully exhibited and bred for many years. Moving on, I continued breeding under the “Voila” prefix and successfully exhibited many Best In Show winners including the breed record holder Multi Royal BIS winner Grand Ch “Voila Canadian Club” (Standard Poodle). Other breeds I have exhibited to Best In Show level are Pekingese, Afghan Hounds, Bedlington Terrier, Irish Setter, Bichon Frise and Scottish Terrier. My judging career started with my desire to have a license to judge Poodles. I was encouraged to continue with the Toy group. I thoroughly enjoyed the learning process and proceeded through the remaining Groups. My thanks to the Conformation Judges Committee (CJC) members – both past and present, group co-ordinators and exhibitors for their support and encouragement. And a special thanks to my wonderful parents and my friends for their confidence in me.

tick PARALYSIS

Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®

WARNING Ixodes Holocyclus! The Paralysis Tick. A tick which may prove fatal to your dog if not found, removed and then treated by a Veterinarian urgently.

Tick parasites will attach wherever they can. Generally they will be found at the head and neck area, however you may find them in between toes, inside the mouth and/or around the anus.

Paralysis tick season generally runs from Spring into late Autumn1, however, in Queensland our warm temperatures and humidity can mean that tick season is pretty much all year round; so, we as dog owners and breeders, must never be complacent when it comes to implementing paralysis tick safety measures.

ARE THEY IN YOUR AREA?

Taking time to try and identify a tick which has burrowed into your dog’s skin is unnecessary.

Our goal should be simple: remove any and all ticks found, regardless of the type, and get to the Vet.

POISONING The tick attaches to the skin and feeds on your dog’s blood, all while excreting a neurotoxin from their saliva. If left untreated, this neurotoxin will cause paralysis of muscles which are responsible for breathing2.

28

DOG WORLD October 2020

If you live on the east coast of Australia and/or if you are near bushland or have lots of vegetation or long grasses then the answer is probably yes.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

If possible avoid potential tick areas/habitats when walking your dog;

Do tick checks everyday if you cannot avoid tick habitats;

Apply and maintain tick prevention control products;

Be aware of the signs and symptoms of tick paralysis disease and act immediately.

Immediate veterinary attention is needed for any dog showing signs of tick paralysis.

First Aid:

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

ACTION

If you notice any of the following, please respond immediately.

1. If you begin noticing signs and symptoms of tick paralysis then undertake a Secondary Assessment without delay.

E.g. ‘my dog’s bark sounds different today’ = act; ‘why is my dog all wobbly’? = act. Don’t wait for multiple symptoms before commencing a head to tail assessment!

Stage 1

• Change in sound of bark • Coughing, retching or gagging • Weakness in hind legs, progressing to front legs • Anxiety • Lethargy Stage 2

• • • • • • •

Wobbliness in back legs (appears drunk) Difficulty getting up Excessive salivation, drooling Regurgitation or vomiting Loud panting, grunting on breathing out Inability to swallow Dilated pupils (pupils enlarge)

Stage 3

• • • •

Body becomes limp (paralysed) Gums cool to touch Gums blue in colour Respiratory failure/cardiac arrest

a. Nose to Tail – Run your fingers along your dog’s body, parting fur as you go, applying enough pressure to feel abnormalities.

Use a torch if you notice something odd so as not to pull on skin tags or warts. If you cannot tell, get to the Vet. i. Use a torch to look inside the mouth, especially gums; around genital areas; in between toes and inside ears. b. Remove any and all ticks from your dog with your tick twister tool or forceps.

i. Try to remove the entire tick, including head, however if you accidently leave the head in the dog, do not panic; remove any and all other ticks and get to the Vet.

2. Keep your dog cool and calm; remove water and food – do not allow pet to eat or drink. 3. Monitor ABC through the entire action process in case symptoms worsen. a. Check the airway for blockages or foreign objects; or a missed tick. Remove if there is. b. Check the breathing (respirations) e.g. count the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing.

c. Check circulation (pulse) – start CPR if no pulse.

On the way to the Vet; (if you have a driver):

If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration on the way to the vet surgery. If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR on the way to the vet surgery.

FOR YOUR NEW PUPPY No matter the breed or coat length of your puppy, grooming is a very important part of ownership. Caring for their nails and coat and making sure they have good hygiene is key to their overall health and wellbeing. – Royal Canin HOW TO BATHE A PUPPY The frequency of baths will vary according to the coat texture. Close-cropped hair should only be washed if dirty, short-haired puppies need to be bathed twice a year on average and long-haired puppies need to be bathed approximately every three months. If your dog likes swimming, its coat should be rinsed afterwards. Particles from river and seawater remaining on the coat may cause irritation, and careful rinsing will prevent this. Start the bathing process by brushing the coat thoroughly to get rid of any knots and mats. After this wet the coat all over and apply the shampoo, working it into a lather, while taking care that it doesn’t get in the dog’s eyes or ears. Shampoo should only be used if your puppy requires it, either for sanitary reasons or as part of hair and skin treatment. Make sure the shampoo used is suitable for dogs in order to maintain a healthy coat. Lukewarm water should be used, along

30

DOG WORLD October 2020

with a special shampoo for puppies to avoid irritation or an imbalance to their skin’s natural pH. Allow this to act for a few minutes, then rinse with plenty of water. It’s a good idea to rinse the head last, as the dog will likely want to shake its head dry.

DRYING YOUR PUPPY AFTER A BATH After the bath, wipe your puppy down vigorously and keep it in a warm room until it’s properly dry. In the summer, the alternative is patting a puppy down in the garden or taking it for a walk, as long as it does’t like rolling around in mud. A hairdryer can be used if the dog is happy with that, but care should be taken not to burn the dog and the hair should be brushed at the same time.

HOW TO CLEAN TAR FROM YOUR PUPPY’S COAT It’s important to note that if the dog gets tar on its coat, oil-based cleaning products shouldn’t be used as they are highly toxic. Apply vegetable oil to affected

Image: Pixabay

GROOMING AND HYGIENE TIPS

areas, wait a few minutes for it to dissolve the tar, then bathe the dog.

TRIMMING A PUPPY’S NAILS Dogs have two types of nail – dewclaw and toenails – both of which grow constantly. Toenails should wear down naturally, but if they grow too long they need to be clipped. All puppies need proper nail care. Generally puppies don’t need to have their nails trimmed but if you can hear the noise the nails make on the ground, you can clip them. Ask your veterinarian to demonstrate the best techniques.

BRUSHING AND COMBING YOUR PUPPY As with humans, a dogs hair will grow and die. Outdoor dogs shed their coat twice a year (spring and autumn) corresponding to the changes in daylight. Indoor dogs are not as affected by changes in light, so they shed hair throughout the year, with two periods of increased shedding in spring and autumn. Regular brushing and bathing will help remove loose hair. The frequency and the type of equipment used will vary depending on the nature of the coat.

BRUSHING PUPPIES WITH CLOSE-CROPPED HAIR While close-cropped hair does not require regular grooming, it does need to be brushed occasionally. Dead skin and hair is loosened by brushing against the hair with a rubber brush. The debris can then be removed by using a bristle brush in the direction of the hair over the whole body. Finish by adding sheen to the coat with a damp chamois.

GROOMING PUPPIES WITH SHORT OR MEDIUM LENGTH HAIR These dogs should be brushed more frequently – at least once a week – due to the density of their coat, which is comprised of both an undercoat and a topcoat. Use a slicker brush, working against the hair to loosen as much dead hair and skin as possible and strip the undercoat. A bristle brush can then be used in the direction of the hair to remove the debris. A wide-tooth comb can be used on the tail and paws. The coat of coarse-haired dogs needs to be stripped four to five times a year with a stripping knife and thumb. This is not at all painful if done properly,

working in the direction of their hair.

BRUSHING PUPPIES WITH LONG HAIR Although beautiful, longhaired coats require daily brushing. This can take up to an hour a day in Afghan Hounds, for example. Use a slicker brush, working in the direction of the hair, to loosen knots and mats. Because the hair is long, this may pull the skin, so care should be taken to avoid hurting the puppy. Using a bristle brush on dogs with silky coats, like Yorkshire Terriers and Afghan Hounds, will add sheen to the coat. A wire brush can be used to remove impurities from the coat of dogs with an abundant undercoat, like Rough Collies. A wide-tooth comb can be used to untangle hair behind the hocks. All grooming tools should be cleaned and stored in a dry location after every use. Keep wire brushes from rusting by wiping them well and rubbing them with a rag soaked in vegetable oil.

PUPPY ORAL CARE Dogs are rarely happy to allow people to manipulate their mouth, so it’s a good strategy to get a puppy used to this from an early age. The gums should be pink. Redness around the teeth is a sign of inflammation and disease, which can cause a loss of appetite if it is painful or the dog is unable to grasp or chew its food. In this case, the dog’s teeth should be examined by a veterinarian.

HOW TO BRUSH A PUPPY’S TEETH The best way to care for your puppy’s teeth is by brushing them several times a week with a toothbrush and toothpaste specifically designed for dogs. Chewing bars that slow down the formation of plaque and tartar by acting mechanically on the teeth when the dog chews are another alternative. Ideally, the dog should be given two or three of these chewing bars a week to help prevent plaque and tartar build-up. Ask your veterinary team which type is best for your dog.

CLEANING YOUR PUPPY’S EARS Dogs carry their ears in one of two ways, either drop or prick. Drop ears should be examined more often because the ear canal is less well ventilated.

DOG WORLD October 2020

31

Ears may be cleaned under the advice of a vet, with a specially formulated solution. Place the tip of the applicator into the ear canal and gently squeeze in 1 to 2 drops. Withdraw the tip and massage the base of the ear very gently for thirty seconds, preventing the dog from shaking its head, before wiping the ear flap with cotton wool.

KEEPING YOUR PUPPY’S EYES CLEAN

DOGS QUEENSLAND HELPS PEOPLE FIND JOBS

The eyes should be bright and moist, with pale pink mucosae. It’s important to clean your puppy’s eyes of any discharge, but there will always be some amount of tear-staining whenever hair rests around the eyes. Tear-staining results from the hair absorbing moisture produced by the eyes.

Dogs Queensland has been proud to partner with belong this year, helping kick start new careers in Conservation and Land Management for disadvantaged job-seekers on Brisbane’s Southside.

Dirt or mud and tear-staining around the eyes can be removed gently with cotton wool and clean, lukewarm water.

belong is a not-for-profit that provides a range of supports and services to people living in Acacia Ridge and surrounding suburbs.

Whether you plan on taking your dog to a groomer as an adult or not, familiarising them with grooming and hygiene routines from a young age will ensure that they get used to being handled and will help avoid any distress that might occur when grooming older dogs.

11 people recently graduated from an 18 week paid traineeship project where they undertook a wide range of bush regeneration activities on the fringes of our site in Durack, yielding big benefits to the local environment as part of the vital Oxley Creek catchment. The next round of this project is due to start in mid-October, and belong is on the hunt for its next group of 11 trainees who will gain handson skills, a Certificate I in Conservation and Land Management, and lots of other support to help prepare them to search for, find, and sustain real jobs.

Employment is the end goal of these projects, and our experience has taught us that the graduates are indeed ready for real work. Dogs Queensland now reaps the benefits of two people who we have since employed following the first project with belong. Harrison Wallace works on our grounds while Tori Hickson is employed on a casual basis undertaking general grounds maintenance. Both are doing a terrific job, and are a great reflection on these projects’ ability to help people break the negative cycles of unemployment. For employers out there, there are great incentives to hire recent graduates from these projects. The Queensland Government provides incentives to employers of up to $10K to hire traineeship graduates. We highly urge employers interested in hiring trainees or people interested in participating in these projects to contact belong via training@ belong.org.au.

Belong Careers Day

Creating connections for real career opportunities. Thank you for your interest in the Belong Careers Day. At Belong, we deliver a number of training and traineeship programs with funding from the State Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. We work with local community members from a range of professional and personal backgrounds to help them develop the knowledge, skills and confidence that will enhance their long-term employment prospects. Our mission is to assist every program participant into work or further training.

Background

To help build a bridge between job candidates and employers, we are holding a Careers Day that will bring together our program participants and graduates with local employers and training organisations. The event’s aim is to discuss employment opportunities, employer expectations and career pathways, while also creating networking opportunities and access to the hidden job market of unadvertised job opportunities.

When and where  

Thursday 29 October 2020 The Social Space 21 Clifton St, Moorooka

 

Start: 8.30am for a 9:00am start End: 11.30am

Note: Event format may change and restriction on numbers may be required due to COVID-19. We will be following the COVID Safe Plan for businesses and will advise of any necessary changes prior to the event.

Event format

The Careers Day will provide an opportunity for job candidates and employers to network in an informal setting. Stall holders will display material about their specific industry and provide employment application forms and processes for applying.

Belong will arrange a ‘roaming MC’ and ask questions relative to employers’ expectations relating to work requirements and employability skills. We ask that employers and training provider’s network informally with job candidates to offer further information on their company including further training, role requirements and application process and where appropriate, discuss opportunities for potential employment with their company. Our aim is to have 10 to 15 organisations in attendance.

What to bring

Please arrive at the venue from 8.30am for set up. A COVID Safe sign in record sheet will be provided. We request you bring a pull-up banner and other organisational information and marketing material. We will provide a small table and two chairs for each organisation to set up a small expostyle stall. If you could wear company colours and a name tag, that would make it easier for participants to identify and address you. Please also make sure to have a sufficient number of business cards on hand. We expect approximately 40 job seekers to attend the event.
