The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for September 2016 The last month has been a very busy time for our organisation. Many thanks must again go to our hard working volunteers for all their efforts. EKKA 2016 This year’s EKKA was definitely well received and enjoyed by all those who attended. Many members would have noticed the new Dogs Queensland booth, which was exceptional. There has been a great deal of positive feedback from members and the public alike. A huge vote of thanks must go to all the volunteers who gave up their time to assist over the duration of the EKKA. Without your continued support, these events would not be possible. The efforts of the PR, Marketing and Magazine Committee must also be acknowledged. The work conducted by this Committee before and during the course of the EKKA was once again, phenomenal. The showbags were a hit with the general public again this year, which is always great to see. All Dogs Sports Spectacular The All Dogs Sports Spectacular continues to grow and has now become one of our organisation’s top events. The public attendance at this year’s event was once again exceptional. This event continues to promote our organisation and the various different types of activities that encompass ‘Dog Sports’. Thanks must go to the hard working Committee that organise and run this event. Emails from the Office I would like to remind members that when they receive email correspondence from the office, they should take the time to read them. We have been receiving quite a lot of feedback from members that they have not been told certain things or that they are not being informed of what is happening with Dogs Queensland. When asked if they were receiving emails from the office, members have been saying they simply delete them without reading them. The emails sent contain a great deal of information ranging from changes to Shows, updates on organisational matters and other important details for all members to consider and provide feedback on. I would encourage all members to please take the time to read any emails you receive from the office. Volunteer of the Year The Volunteer of the Year program is well underway. Nominations close at the end of September. We have all experienced the tremendous effort demonstrated at the EKKA and all of our major events (in all Zones) by a dedicated crew of volunteers. Our volunteer workforce come from near and far, roll their sleeves up and get the job done. We would like to recognise the efforts of these special people. Nominate that special person you know and put them in the running for the inaugural Volunteer of the Year 2016.

A Club and the Show Manager have a responsibility to manage and run the operations of sanctioned events to be fair and equitable to all exhibitors and this important principle is a paramount objective at all sanctioned events. The sanctioned event must be demonstratively fair and equitable and exhibitor perception is one of the elements in determining this principle. All judges’ contracts must be in writing and contain all terms and conditions and must be completed at least five months before the commencement of the sanctioned event. A judge has a further responsibility to ensure that he/she returns the completed contract within fourteen (14) days of receipt to the Show Secretary. Once agreed neither the club, club official, member of the club or a relative of the member may amend, vary, or alter the contract which might tend to create a perception of bias or the apprehension of bias in the opinion of the CCC(Q) including by offering any inducement and/or a bribe to a judge. Matters considered herein shall be any undocumented changes to the contract and include upgrades to accommodation or airfares which a reasonable person might consider be designed to influence a judges’ decision(s) in the conduct of any sanctioned event(s) either past, present or future. Where an amendment, variation or alteration to a judges contract is approved by the club or its officials at an approved club meeting the reasons shall be clearly stated and all exhibitors promptly advised preferably prior to the sanctioned event occurring or if this is unable to be done then on the day of the sanctioned event and all exhibitors shall be entitled to withdraw their entry (ies) without penalty and be entitled to a full refund of fees. Clubs, club officials or a relative of a club member shall not during the conduct of a sanctioned event remove the judge from the environs of the event for whatever reason except if the event is being conducted over more than one day or there is a medical or other emergency. Meals and other breaks should be arranged so that judge remains at the sanctioned event and no socialisation is permitted with exhibitors or relatives of exhibitors.

Alterations and additions to approved Judges list
I note the following that appeared in the October 2015 Dog World; ‘The Conformation Judges Committee wishes to advise exhibitors that for a trial period of twelve months from 1st August 2015, no Group coordinators will exhibit at All Breed Open Shows in the Group in which they are the coordinator. This, of course, excludes Breed Specialty Shows. (Members of the Conformation Judges Committee do not exhibit at All Breed Open Shows). At the end of the twelve-month period, if there has not been a marked increase in the entries at All Breed Open Shows, this trial will not be continued.’ It is noted that during the Trial, there was little difference in entries in the past year or so and it is now up to the discretion of the coordinators whether they enter Open Shows or not.

Dogs Queensland Board Notes The Queensland Dog World
Event Managers and Stewards Committee Rule Explanation Statutor y Declarations are serious documents: The completion, witnessing and signing of a Statutory Declaration is a serious matter. Making false declarations can lead to Criminal charges and possible imprisonment. Deponents (the persons making the Stat Dec) are declaring before a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Declarations that the statement they have provided is truthful and, in their opinion, entirely correct. In the dog world, we see Stat Decs being required when incidents occur and witness statements are provided together with the actual incident reports. There is an alarming evidence of false declarations being made in these situations when totally opposed statements are being presented about the same incident. Deponents and witnessing Justices taking declarations need to be fully aware of their legal liability when completing these documents. The content of a Stat Dec must contain only what the Deponent saw or heard or actually did, not what they were told (hearsay) or what someone else saw or, worst of all, what someone has asked them to say!

Judges’ Training and Regulations The Queensland Dog World
Regulations For Judges’ Training Conformation 2016/2017 Self Education Program General 1.
The Rules and Regulations of the CCC (Q) Ltd Judges Training Program (JTP) are amended from time to time; such amendments are published in the Queensland Dog World. These CCC (Q) Ltd Regulations for the Judges Training Program comply with the philosophy of the ANKC Rules but also accommodate necessities required by the diverse nature of metropolitan and regional Queensland. These regulations are effective immediately.
2.
Aspiring judges and all interested members are reminded that membership in the JTP confers no automatic right to become a Judge. Becoming a judge requires successful completion of the syllabus following which the aspiring judge must earn the privilege to be registered and acknowledged as a judge. This privilege may be withdrawn should circumstances warrant and after all facts have been considered.
3.
An essential requirement of acceptance, and also continued progression, in the program (including applications for both theory and practical examinations) is a demonstrated significant and continued participation in the management or operation of an affiliated CCC(Q) Ltd Club (supported by documentation signed by at least 2 members of the Club Executive). This documentation MUST accompany ALL applications; for first time applicants, theory examinations, practical examinations, irrespective of the number of Championship groups a Judge may hold. Applications which do not include this mandatory documentation will be rejected unless appropriately documented reasons for extenuating circumstances are approved by the Conformation Judges Committee (CJSC).
4.
Members are not permitted to accept judging appointments or sign contracts to judge, until official written notification from the CCC (Q) Ltd., advising their judging status, has been received by them (see also regulations 4a, 18 & 19). 4a.
5.
5
As from June 2010 candidates residing south of Sarina will only be granted Open Show status in any Group after they have successfully completed the theory exams for that particular group. Once they have received a letter from DQ Ltd advising them of their appointment as an Open Show judge for this Group they may then sign contracts to judge the nominated group immediately. Trainee judges who had been granted Open Show status prior to 2010 will retain their status on the judging panel. The maximum number of Groups at Open Show level is four.
The CCC (Q) Ltd Judges Training Program is available for eligible members of the CCC (Q) Ltd who are residents of Queensland. Queensland residents who were previously members of other ANKC Affiliates, and were previously in an equivalent training program, will be recognised under a reciprocal agreement, provided all requirements are fulfilled.
12 - September 2016
6.
Any persons who were previously resident in another State or Territory, (and members of that State or Territory) and were not in the Judges Training Program, and who are now bona-fide residents of Queensland, may apply to come into the program upon furnishing a letter from their previous controlling body showing they comply with the entry Requirements for Aspiring Judges.
7.
The Judges Training Program is a continuous program. Persons who are unable to continue in the system through illness, injury or issues of a personal nature, should apply in writing to the CCC(Q) Ltd for leave of absence for a suitable period.
8.
A member who has previously held Championship Judges status may apply for reinstatement. Where the period of absence from the Judges List is four years or more, reinstatement will be considered only after the member concerned has passed 90% of an Open Book examination on a number of the major breeds in the Group(s) plus those Breeds which have been introduced by the ANKC during their absence. In some instances, particularly for longer periods of absence, the CJC may require a practical assessment which would be conducted using similar procedures to the Practical Exam as described in regulations 27 – 32, and at a date to be determined by the CJC. Should the candidate fail the assessment, they would be added to the Open Show Panel and required to judge a further 25 dogs before applying for a standard Practical Exam. Applications for reinstatement are to be approved by the Committee of the CCC (Q) Ltd.
9.
Any Trainee or Aspiring Judge who is found to have engaged in unsportsmanlike or unprofessional behaviour, or has breached the CCC(Q) Ltd Rules or the CCC(Q) Ltd Code of Ethics or the CCC(Q) Ltd Judges Code of Ethics, or is not fulfilling training regulations, will be held accountable and may be suspended or removed from the Training Program and / or the Judges Panel. The CJC, in considering whether to remove or suspend, will consider all the facts and will provide their recommendation to the committee of the CCC (Q) Ltd. A right of appeal is available and an appeal may be made to the CCC (Q) Ltd in writing within 14 days of the official notification of the removal or suspension.
10. Where a Trainee fails to comply with the Rules and Regulations of the training scheme within 18 months of their acceptance into the scheme, the CJC may recommend to the CCC(Q) Ltd that the person be removed from the Judges Panel. The CJC, in considering whether to remove a person from the Judges Panel, will consider all the facts and will provide their recommendation to the Committee of the CCC (Q) Ltd. A right of appeal is available and an appeal may be made to the CCC (Q) Ltd in writing within 14 days of the official notification of the removal. 11. Stewarding requirements listed in Regulation 21 must be completed each and every year. If through sickness, injury or other involuntary circumstances, a Trainee Judge cannot fully satisfy the requirements of the Judges Training Program, the CJC may approve an extension of the time limit. Applications for such leave of absence must be submitted in writing immediately the pertinent circumstances arise. 12. The results of written examination papers are valid for life. The CJC reserves the right to use an alternative examination paper whenever it is deemed necessary.

Failure to submit the essays within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date will render the Trainee ineligible to take an examination until the missed Breed lectures are attended. * When no lecture and/or no dogs of a Breed are present at a scheduled Breed lecture, Trainees who attend will be required to complete an essay as per the above format within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date. A trainee must be present for and participate in the entire lecture in order to be credited with attendance. Applicants will then be examined as per Regulation 25. Where there are insufficient candidates for Group Lectures, it may necessitate the first time applicant attending lectures for the Group marked 2nd choice (Durack only), subject to CJC approval. This group will qualify as the Candidate’s Primary Group.

16. Where the CCC (Q) Ltd, in its sole and unfettered discretion, considers that exceptional circumstances exist, it may grant dispensation to a candidate from compliance with regulations 15c and / or 15d. 17. All Trainee Judges and Aspiring Judges are required to support all training activities, including assistance with Breed lectures, entries at Open Shows, and make full use of the CCC(Q) Ltd library for general research. 18. 19. After a First Time Applicant, residing Sarina North, successfully completes part A and part B theory exams for their primary Group they will receive a letter confirming their appointment as an Open Show Judge and will be offered up to seven Open Show Groups; they may also apply to attend lectures and sit theory exams in their next Group. Once they have received this formal written notification from the CCC(Q) Ltd Office they may then accept and sign contracts and judge Open Shows immediately, however the first judging appointment must include the candidate’s complete primary group, and they must be assessed at that appointment. Each of these Groups must be judged three times Sarina and north before judging Groups South of Sarina. 20. Any First Time Applicant who fails the theory examination in their Primary Group must re-attend lectures and re-sit the written examination the following year. If the First Time Applicant fails the examination the fifth time, they will be removed from the Judges Training Program for a period of two years before reapplying.
Stewarding Requirements for all Judges in the Program 21. Starting 1st July and terminating 30th June each year, the following Stewarding requirements must be fulfilled each and every year, irrespective of whether the Trainee / Open Show Judge intends applying for a theory or practical exam. Note: NO dispensation to these stewarding requirements will be considered. a. Judges with less than 3 Groups at Championship Level must complete a minimum of 12 Queensland appointments (at least 6 as a Ring Steward in All-Breeds Shows, with no more than 3 at Open Shows, or whole of group shows (e.g. Toy Dog Club Show), with no more than 3 at Open Shows. The remainder may be either Writing or Assembling, with no more than 3 of these at Open Shows. Judges who are resident in S.E. Qld must complete at least six (6) appointments within that area. Note: stewarding for 2 or more Groups at the same show on the same day is classified as ONE appointment. b. Judges licensed in 3, 4 or 5 Groups at Championship Level will complete a minimum of 6 Queensland appointments (at least three as a Ring Steward at All-Breeds Champ Shows , or whole of group shows (e.g. Toy Dog Club Show), The others may be either Writing or Assembling at Champ Shows. Judges who are resident in S.E. Qld must complete at least six (6) appointments within that area. Note: stewarding for 2 or more Groups at the same show on the same day is classified as ONE appointment. c.
The stewarding requirements are to ensure that candidates not only provide valuable assistance with the operation of shows but also, and more importantly, enable them to observe the judging of Breeds in complete Groups. Consequently the function of Show Manager does not qualify for the aforementioned requirements. It should also be noted that Assembly Stewarding at a Royal Show in Queensland is classified as an “Assembly Steward” not as a “Ring Steward”.
e. All Judges in the Judges Training Program must maintain and produce, upon request, an official CCC (Q) Ltd Stewards Card. f.
The Judge’s original completed stewarding card, (Judge to retain a copy), must be submitted to the CCC(Q) Ltd Office after 30th June and before 15th July). This documentation must accompany any application to attend lectures, or sit for any theory or practical examination. Note: Failure to comply with ALL aspects of Regulations 11 and 21 may result in removal from the Open Show Judging Panel.
Theory Examinations 22. Each year, a Trainee must attend all breed lectures* and sit for a written paper for that Group (the application to attend lectures is to be submitted before 15th July using the prescribed form available from the CCC(Q) Ltd website). Trainees may only apply for 1 group in any year (October to July); split groups (i.e. part A for 1 group and part B for a different group) are not allowed. A Trainee may miss a maximum of 2 lectures, 1 prior to the Part A exam and 1 prior to the PartB exam. If a trainee misses more than this without special written dispensation from the CJC, the trainee will not be eligible to sit for the written examinations. This must be applied for within 14 days of the missed lecture. Any missed lecture requires a 1000 word essay # on the Breeds covered at the lecture and is to be submitted within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date. Essays are to contain a history and description of the breed, its purpose and all relevant requirements contained in the Breed Standard and are to be illustrated with pictures/drawings. On passing both theory exams (with an overall average of 75% or better), they may apply for a Practical (Hands On) examination in that Group (if sufficient numbers of dogs Judged; see regulation 26) and may apply to attend lectures for an additional Open Show Group. Applications for the practical exam on the prescribed form (available from the CCC (Q) Ltd website) are required NO LATER THAN 15th JULY. * When no lecture and/or no dogs of a Breed are present at a scheduled Breed lecture, Trainees who attend will be required to complete an essay as per the above format. Failure to submit the essays within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date will render the Trainee ineligible to take an examination until the missed Breed lectures are attended. A trainee must be present for and participate in the entire lecture in order to be credited with attendance. Critiques required following the breed lecture are to be in the hands of the Group Coordinator within 14 days of the lecture or by the next scheduled lecture date. 23. All Trainee Judges who are considered by the CJC to reside a distance from the normal venue for lectures that would pose a travelling risk, are to study through ‘Distance Education’. i.e. All trainee judges not attending lectures held at Durack will study by Distance Education. The Distance Education curriculum is available on the Dogs Qld website under “Judges Training Documents”. Candidates should check regularly for any amendments. Metropolitan trainees may, in special circumstances, be allowed to study by Distance Education. They must apply in writing to the CCC (Q) office, giving their reasons, by the 15th July.
d. For Judges holding 6 Groups at Championship Level, Stewarding is optional. All Breeds Judges may Steward, Write or Show Manage (provided appropriately qualified).

24. a. Trainees must maintain and produce, upon request, an official CCC (Q) Ltd Open Show Judges Card. This card will be a record of all Open Show Judging appointments and the number of dogs judged. Responsibility of maintaining these records resides solely with the Trainee who is also recommended to maintain a duplicate copy in a secure place. b. Trainees must maintain an Assessment Card. This card is to be signed by 2 different Accredited Championship Judges who have assessed the Trainee while judging each group on different appointments. One of these assessments must be the first time they judge each group. The assessor must have held a Championship licence for the group they are assessing for a minimum of 5 years. A minimum of two assessments per group are required before applying for the practical examination. The candidate is responsible to ensure the assessments are done and recorded. Open Show Assessment forms are available on the CCC (Q) Ltd website. • While assessments are not compulsory after a Trainee has acquired four Championship Groups, the CJC reserves the right to further assess any Trainee at any appointment. c. The Group Training Coordinators will maintain attendance at all Breed lectures and liaise with the CJC regarding records at progress of candidates. Copies of these records are to be supplied to the CCC (Q) Ltd office. 25. a. All candidates, State-wide, will take the first Theory Examination on the last Tuesday in February. A pass mark of 75% is required. b. All candidates state-wide will take the second Theory Examination on the first Thursday in July. A pass mark of 75% is required. c. Should a candidate fall short of 75% in either paper, then an average will be taken on the two papers. A pass mark of 75% is required. d. Should a candidate not achieve an overall average of 75% or better, any exam failed must be re-sat in the next session for that part of the Group. Trainees may only apply for exams in one group in any year (October to July); split Groups (i.e. part A for one group and part B for a different group) are not allowed. e. The examination questions will be taken from the current ANKC Breed Standards. f. Each candidate will sign a master sheet, acknowledging receipt of a numbered paper. No assessor will know whose paper they mark. g. NO deferred exams will be given for a candidate who is away for any reason. All dates and times for examinations are set well in advance and hence no excuse will be allowed. In extenuating circumstances such as enforced work commitments, a candidate may make an application to sit the exam at a different location on the same date; such applications will be considered by the CJC. Note: holidays and judging appointments are not extenuating circumstances. h. Candidates who fail a theory examination may request a re-mark of their paper. This request must be made in writing, to the General Manager CCC (Q) Ltd within 14 days of receiving advice of the results of the examination. The re-marking will be done by three members of the CJC (none of whom marked the original paper), who will separately re-mark the paper without conferring. Those re-marking the paper will not know the candidate’s name.

Applications for Practical Examinations 26. a. Once a Trainee Judge has judged a minimum of 150 dogs at Open Show Group level and has attended 3 different Breed Specialty Championship shows within that Group and has completed 5 written critiques on dogs examined at each event, (15 in total), they may apply to take their Practical Examination (1 Group per year) and are recommended to re-attend Breed lectures for that group. Note: You must attend the entire breed show or a minimum of 50 dogs at that show. Breeds with different varieties are counted as one breed. e.g. Poodles. The critiques on the 15 dogs examined must be countersigned by an Accredited Judge for that Group present on the day. The CJC would prefer that this was done in conjunction with the Group co-coordinator. Trainers in remote areas who are unable to attend a Specialty in the Group are to submit 15 photos of 15 dogs accompanied by critiques on each of the dogs. These may be obtained from the internet or books. The candidate’s original Assessment Card and Stewarding Card (Regulations 21 & 24b) must accompany the application (the candidate is to retain copies). This examination will take place for all eligible Trainees at Durack on the 34th or 35th weekend of each year; however the date may be varied and will be confirmed each year. A Trainee Judge will only be permitted to elevate to Championship status in 1 Group per year. NB - Sweepstakes and General Specials numbers at Open Shows are not to be included (CJSC Sweepstakes may be included). Note: - dogs entered in multiple classes at any show can only be counted once. b. Application for the Practical Examination must be made on the prescribed form (available from the CCC (Q) Ltd website), completing all details. This form must be received NO LATER THAN 15th JULY in any year. Applications may be submitted “subject to passing the part B theory exam”. c. Candidates must have judged the Group, for which application is made, at least four times for at least two different clubs. 2 specialty Breed shows each with an entry exceeding 20 dogs exhibited may be counted as 1 of the 4 Groups. It should be noted that candidates must judge at least 3 complete Groups. d. Any candidate who fails a practical examination, must judge another 25 exhibits in that group to be eligible for re-examination. This can be either a full Group or Specialty Show. e. “Mentoring” Open Show Trainees who are resident Sarina and north may participate in a “mentoring” scheme. Only Accredited Queensland Championship Judges may act as mentors. A Trainee may count dogs examined under the supervision of a Mentor Judge as part of their training. Under this system, Open Show Trainee Judges must judge a minimum of 100 dogs at Open Shows and examine a maximum of 100 dogs under the supervision of a Mentor Judge (a total of 200 dogs.) Any Trainee who participates must not exhibit under that Judge on that day.

When a Judge obtains Championship status in a Group, for their first group, they must then judge at least 2 groups OR a minimum of 100 dogs (total) in Queensland before they can accept appointments in that Group interstate or overseas. The Judge is required to advise the CJC, (via the CCC (Q) Ltd Office), within two weeks of signing the contract as they may be assessed at these shows. g. When a Judge obtains Championship status in a Group they may apply for a further Group at Open Show status to bring them up to: (a) 4 Open Show Groups for candidates residing south of Sarina. (b) 7 Open Show Groups for candidates residing Sarina and north; each of these Groups must be judged at least 3 times before signing contracts for Open Shows south of Sarina.

The examination will include being assessed on “ring craft”. 30. The examination will be conducted by 3 Judges appointed by the CCC (Q) Ltd. A fourth person, also appointed by the CCC (Q) Ltd, will act as Chairperson and Coordinator. a. Both the candidate and examiners will examine the exhibits and determine placings 1 to 5. The examiner will examine the dogs first then the candidate will examine the dogs. These placings will be recorded on the score sheet and without communicating their decisions to any other candidate or examiner. b. Each candidate will be interviewed by each examiner independently. c. All questions pertaining to the Breed are expected to be answered. The candidate will only be examined on the exhibits in the respective class. d. Questions may be taken from current ANKC Breed Standards and the Glossary of Terms. e. Candidates will do their assessments allowing 2 minutes per exhibit. f. The examiner will record on the score sheet comments relating to the candidate. This must be completed whether passing or failing a candidate. g. At NO time will the examiners confer. h. At NO time will the examiner discuss with any candidate, either on the day or when results have been notified, whether they have passed or failed the candidate. To do so is a breach of confidentiality. i. All papers remain confidential and the property of the CCC (Q) Ltd.

Scheduled Breed Lectures Scheduled Breed Lectures are listed below. It is compulsory for Open Show candidates to attend all Breed Lectures and, although elevation candidates do not have to attend these lectures, it is in their best interest to do so. The following provisional list of dates for metropolitan breed lectures for each group is contingent upon whether lectures for a particular group will be conducted in the 2015 / 2016 training season. This decision is dependent upon the number of applications received for each group and will not be determined until August, and subsequently published in the October or November Dog World. If you require confirmation prior to this publication, please contact the relevant Group Coordinator. Please note: Any trainee not attending the metropolitan lectures at Durack must complete the Distance Education Curriculum. This is available on the Dogs Queensland website under ‘Committees/ Conformation Judges/Conformation Judges Documents’. Application for dispensation from any of the rules and regulations contained herein must be submitted in writing, giving reasons, to the Conformation Judges Committee, via the office of Dogs Queensland for possible consideration. Should a lecture need to be re-scheduled for any reason whatsoever, this then will become the official lecture for that breed.

Library News The Queensland Queensland DogDog World World
The Collie &
Shetland Sheepdog
As can be imagined with these two popular breeds, there are many books that have been published, each containing interesting history and standards etc. I have selected 'The Collie' by Anna Katherine Nicholas and 'The Complete Illustrated Collie' first published by Ebury Press in 1093 and edited by Joe and Liz Cartledge. While both of these books are not new publications, the information contained should still be of value to breeders, judges, etc. today. 'The Complete Illustrated Collie' also has comprehensive information on Smooth and Bearded Collies as well as the better know Collie Rough. 'The New Shetland Sheepdog' by Maxwell Riddle and 'The Shetland Sheepdog' by Margaret Osborne come from two diverse areas – one is an American publication, fairly new in terms of 'dog books', was published in 1987. The Margaret Osborne book is an English publication and was first published in 1959 and the third publication was in 1967. However old the issue is, the content of both these books is invaluable. All books mentioned in 'Library News' are available to be borrowed from the Durack Library.
A slice of history: In 1996, a Library and Archives Committee was formed with the charter to establish a Canine Library at Durack. This Library was officially opened in July, 1997. Under the leadership of Mrs Jeanette Woolcock, this small but keen group of people worked tirelessly to put together the Library as we see it today. The area allocated for the Library was (as we are told) to be only a ‘temporary’ position. The Committee was determined to improve the location and set about raising funds to be used specifically for a better location. We held Shows, Cent Auctions,Trivia Nights and catered for CCC events wherever possible. The overheads were minimal – Committee members contributed prizes, cash, food and anything required to run these fundraisers so the profits were good. That is now 19 years ago and the Library is still in the original ‘temporary’ position. I am now looking for members' ideas as to where the Library would be better posirioned within the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds complex. I would like members to email me their thoughts on this – my email address is hjacworth@gmail.com. I am an original Committee member and would love to have this very integral and important part of Dogs Queensland history showcased and used by everyone. Thank you for your support. Book Review The Queensland Dog World
Portuguese Dog Breeds Reviewed by Helen Acworth Librarian Edited by the Portuguese Kennel Club, this book is a ‘Bilingual Edition' illustrating Portuguese dog breeds and was published as recently as 2014. This is an amazing book - the first pages are dedicated to photographs of 'Dogs from the Past'. That part alone makes it so very interesting. Each breed mentioned is well documented with amazing colour photos, with standards detailed. The breeds illustrated are not known to most of us in Australia but that does not detract from the content of the book. For dog lovers anywhere, this makes it a must read book. Breeds that have been included are: 'Terceira Cattle Dog' – 'Portuguese Sheepdog' – 'Estrela Mountain Dog' - 'Castro Laboreiro Dog' – 'Saint Miguel Cattle Dog' – 'Alentejo Mastiff' – 'Portuguese Warren Hound'. You may never have heard of any of these, but I can assure you they are magnificent looking dogs. Available for borrowing from the Durack Library.

I first encountered the Collie breed when I was only fourteen years old, as I became a proud owner of a Collie female called Vasca. Since then, I have actively shared my life with this marvellus breed for the last 22 years. The first years of hanging out with the breed had been more or less amateurlike, yet the breed soon overwhelmed me and I wanted to know as much as possible about it, as well as learn its history. My discoveries soon pointed out the vast anatomic, visual and character variety of the breed throughout Europe, sometimes even within a country. My greatest challenge eventually became 'exploring' of the breed standard and discovering the ideal type of a Collie in accordance to the standard. I was aware of the fact that there was no good chance of knowing the breed only by exploring its specimen within my home country, so I began to follow it throughout Europe. As I was mostly interested in the 'European' type of a Collie, described by the FCI standard, I limited myself to the European territory; I could not avoid, of course, England, the country where the breed is indigenous.
26 - September 2016
W h i l e e x p l o r i n g, I m e t m a ny wonderful people, breeders and Judges completely devoted to the breed whose knowledge I literally swallowed and stored in my 'brain bag' called The Collie. Soon I found out that those people shared the same objective: to keep the breed within the type described by the standard and I passionately joined them in their efforts. I must confess that I had been infected with the 'kennel blind disease' at first, which means one’s addiction to a single breeding line. Soon I found out that that was a big mistake, unfruitful to the breed and that I must lose that habit completely, because it only meant completely losing one’s touch with self-criticism, and it was completely unacceptable when I was judging, since a Judge must always maintain his or her objectivity. The passion for the breed had soon led me to an important decision to become a breed Judge. My first choice was, unsurprisingly, the Collie: I became a breed Judge for Collies in 2002. I have judged Collies at the special Shows in most of the European countries since and I am going to judge the breed at the World Dog Show in Salzburg, 2012.

As a Judge, I started to realise that there are two very different types of Collies in Europe, for which the expressions 'modern' and 'classic' are used. The modern type should be the new 'variant' of the breed, created in the last 15 – 20 years, although the breed standard itself has not changed at all and the modern type can be found mostly in Southern parts of Europe and even in the home country of the breed, Great Britain. On the other hand, the 'classic' type should represent an older 'variant' of the breed which is still strongly made by the requirements of the standard. The interpretation of the real type of the Collie has even caused a 'true war' between breeders and exhibitors of both types of the breed, as well as their divergent interpretation and understanding of the breed standard. I am certain that personal interpretation, leading to the incorrect understanding of the breed standard is the key problem that has split the breed into two completely different types, each having numerous followers. Besides the breeders, the Judges should also completely understand and master the breed standard, as they are fully responsible for grading the dogs professionally, objectively and - above all – as strictly by the standard as possible. Splitting the breed into two so different types was mainly caused by us, the Judges, who set the course of breeding for many breeders attending dog Shows. Such a huge difference within the individuals of the same breed is living proof that the judging and the interpretation of the standard are not uniform.
Certainly, a Collie`s head is an extremely important part of the breed`s essence, but judging the entire dog on head quality alone and ignoring the fact that this is a Herding dog would present a grave injustice to the breed. To better understand the big difference between the classic and modern »type« of Collies, let us compare both types and match them to the standard:
General Appearance:
Appears as a dog of great beauty, standing with impassive dignity, with no part out of proportion to whole. A short sentence, but can tell everything if understood correctly. The keywords that describe the breed are 'impassive dignity' and 'no part out of proportion to whole' - they lead us through the breed standard. The expression 'impassive dignity' should mean that the Collie is a breed that radiates pride, beauty, self-esteem and harmony by its exterior, while the expression 'no part out of proportion to whole' should express that a dog must be built proportionally and harmonically in its entirety. No part of the body should be discordant with the others.
I try to take every opportunity of a constructive debate with breed Judges of the Collie and most of all I like to hear the opinion of the Judge and his or her arguments why the particular dog was favoured in the ring. Those are mostly professional, objective explanations; sometimes, however, it is evident that the Judge has expressed his or her own personal point of view of the standard or that he or she overlooked some of the very important interpretations of the standard. The most common argument for favouring a dog is its 'wonderful, luxuriantly thick coat', although the same thickness completely covers the body lines of the dog. The most shocking answer to my question why the Judge didn’t request to see the dog in movement was that 'a Collie’s movement is not important, but its head and the sweetest facial expression possible are'. However, isn’t the Collie one of the herding breeds for which the perfect movement is one of the basic requirements?
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
General Appearance: Classic type
The dog suits the expression 'dog with dignity' on the first look. The body is congruent, it radiates dignity, power and activity, without any exaggerations and discordance of any part of the body, the hair fits the body and does not cover its lines. The body looks congruent.

Viewed in profile, top of the skull and top of the muzzle lay in two parallel straight lines of equal length, divided by a slight, but perceptible stop or break. A mid-point between inside corners of eyes (which is centre of a correctly placed stop) is centre of balance in length of head. End of a smooth, well-rounded muzzle blunt, never square. Under jaw strong, clean cut. Depth of skull from brow to the underpart of the jaw never excessive (deep through). Nose always black. Surely, the way in which the standard describes a Collie’s head is one of the most incomprehensible parts of understanding the standard. The most important points of description of the head are: well-blunted clean wedge, skull flats, parallel straight lines of the skull and top of the muzzle and slight, but perceptible stop, and must not be ignored under any circumstances.
General Appearance: Modern type
No matter how hard one tries, one can not find the expression of pride in this dog. Why? Mostly because the dog’s body does not appear congruent. It is too short compared to its height, the head is not wedge-shaped and parallel, it is too deep, the vaulted neck that should proudly keep the elegant head on the shoulders is too short and it looks like the head is planted between the shoulders when it should be on the neck.
Today, the most common fault is that the muzzle and skull are not parallel with too much deep stop and snipy shape of muzzle. If one can understand how a parallel, wedge-shaped head of a Dobermann, a Pinscher, etc. should look like, then one should also understand it for a Collie.
The angles are also not correct due to the too short body. The body is covered with thick hair that does not fit and actually covers the body lines underneath. The croup is too short because the whole body is too short and consequentially the tail is set too high and is too short, worn over the back in movement. The tail plays an important part in physical and visual appearance of a Collie. It acts as... in the movement, a long, correctly put and worn tail gives the dog an appearance of elegance. None of the mentioned facts are in accordance with the standard – they are in fact in contradiction with it.
Head and Skull:
Head properties are of great importance, which, is to be considered in proportion to size of the dog. Viewed from front or side, the head resembles a well-blunted clean wedge, being smooth in outline. Skull flats. Sides taper gradually and smoothly from ears to end of the nose, without prominent cheekbones or pinched muzzle.
28 - September 2016
Head and Skull: Classic type
As the body of a Collie must look flawlessly congruent, so must the head. The parts of the head must be connected with clear lines, no part must stick out. The head in the picture clearly shows just that. If one connects any two points of the parts of the head, one always gets a straight line. The end of the muzzle is well-rounded with enough strong underjaw.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Head and Skull: Modern type
The head in the picture instantly appears as if it was made of two parts, but most of all the following faults can be held against it: muzzle and skull are not parallel at all, stop is not dividing two parallel lines but could be described as a slope. Head is too deep and there is no sign of wedge-shape. Underjaw is too short. All of the described features are in discordance with the standard and should therefore be considered as faults.
Eyes: Classic type
The expression in the picture is typical and wanted in a Collie, a combination of sweetness, intelligence and vigilance, in complete accordance with the standard. The eyes are not too small but medium-size, slightly slanted, almond-shaped, with intelligent and vigilant expression.
Eyes:
Very important feature giving a sweet expression. Medium size (never very small) set somewhat obliquely, of almond-shape and dark brown colour, except in the case of blue merles when eyes are frequently (one or both, or part of one or both) blue or blue-flecked. Expression full of intelligence, with quick, alert look when listening. Very important remarks in the standard regarding the eyes are 'medium size, never very small', as well as 'expression full of intelligence, with quick, alert look shen listening'. A Collie’s expression should never only be sweet, but also intelligent and only the combination of both makes the typical expression of a Collie. Unfortunately, the request for an 'expression full of intelligence' is often ignored and the 'sweet expression' is emphasizsed, the latter being more expressed with small eyes, and therefore there are more and more Collies having too small eyes, again in discordance with the standard.

Continued from page 29
Ears: Classic type Eyes: Modern type
Collies with only a sweet expression can very often be seen, but that expression radiates neither intelligence nor vigilance. Sometimes the eyes are so small that they look 'pig-like'
Ears:
The ears of the dog in the picture are in complete accordance with the standard 'small, not too close together on top of skull, not too far apart, carried semi-erect with approximately twothirds of ear standing erect, top third tipping forward naturally, below horizontal'. The ears are congruent with the other parts of the head, which makes the wanted appearance as the standard requires.
Small, not too close together on top of skull, nor too far apart. In repose carried thrown back, but on alert brought forward and carried semi-erect, that is, with approximately two-thirds of ear standing erect, top third tipping forward naturally, bellow horizontal. The ears, as well as the head, represent problems in understanding the breed standard of the Collie to many people. People very often remember only the information 'with approximately two-thirds of the ear standing erect, top third tipping forward naturally', while they ignore the demand 'small, not too close together, not too far apart on top of skull'. As consequence, there are dogs with too heavy, too big or too low set ears, or even a combination of all of the three. As is true for the general appearance of a dog, that it should be congruent and balanced, it is also true for individual parts of the body, even for such a small part as the ears. Only the balance of every part of the body can lead to the goal – a perfectly and congruently shaped dog, without discrepancies of any part of the body.
30 - September 2016
Ears: Modern type
One look at the picture tells us that the head of this dog is different from the classic-type head. The ears are still small, but too far apart. Even such a small fault completely changes the appearance of the head. The skull section looks too wide, the congruence and the typical outlook of the breed are lost.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Neck:
Muscular, powerful, of fair length, well arched A short, but completely clear explanation of the standard. Only with an arched and suitably long neck will one get a Collie with a congruently built silhouette and expressive dignity. A dog without a neck completely loses its dignified look, the beauty of the body disappears.
The dog’s neck is too short, it looks like the head is planted between the dog’s shoulders. The congruence of the dog is ruined by absence of the neck, the shortness of the neck is often present in combination with other faults of the dog’s front (straight front angulation, no forechest).
Body:
Slightly long compared with height, back level and firm with slight rise over loins; ribs well sprung, chest deep, fairly broad behind shoulders. The standard is completely clear in this part: 'slightly long compared with height', which can mean absolutely nothing else but the length of the body being greater than the height. With such a clear interpretation, one can ask oneself how the evolution of the breed could divert into direction of more and more specimen of square-shaped dogs that even win the shows?
Neck: Classic type
The neck is fairly arched, just the right length, according to the laws of proportion approximately as long as the head and emphasizses the silhouette of the body which looks congruent. The dog looks proud with its proudly lifted head, planted on the neck.
Body: Classic type
The dog is longer compared to its height, as the standard requests, which helps its congruent appearance.
Neck: Modern type

September 2016 - 31
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 31
Tail: Classic type Body: Modern type
The picture shows a dog in movement with a correctly carried tail, in line with the back, not curled above the back.
The dog is almost as long as it is high, the body looks square, which is in disaccord with the standard and represents a fault. As consequence, the body proportions are ruined and the dog does not look congruent.
Tail:
Long with bone reaching at least to hock joint. To be carried low when quiet but with slight upward swirl at tip. May be carried gaily when excited, but never over back. The standard is also absolutely clear in this case and any other interpretation is completely unacceptable. In plain words, the tail must be extended at least to the hock joint and never worn above the back. Yet there are many dogs that wear their tails curled above the back and resemble spitzers, which belong to an entirely different breed group. Tolerance of this fault is very sad and destructive to the breed, because it changes a dog’s silhouette completely and it is unacceptable that such dogs even win the Shows. The reason for such a frequent fault is mostly a too short body, resulting in a too short croup and therefore too highly planted and too short tail (which goes hand in hand). Simply put, one fault (too short body) ruins the entire congruence of the dog, which leads from one fault to another.
32 - September 2016
Tail: Modern type
The faults of incorrectly planted and carried tail are most visible in the movement, as the picture shows. The tail is curled above the back and is devastating to the elegant, congruent silhouette of the dog, so typical for Collies.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Gait/Movement:
Distinctly characteristic in this breed. A sound dog is never out at the elbow, yet moves with front feet comparatively close together. Plaiting, crossing or rolling is higly undesirable. Hind legs from hock joint to ground when viewed from rear to be parallel but not too close; when viewed from side, action is smooth. Hind legs powerful with plenty of drive. A reasonably long stride is desirable and should be light and appear effortles. Absolute soundness essential. As is true for any other breed, only a harmonically, proportionally built Collie can move lightly, strenuously, parallel, with good reach and drive and effortless appearance. Correct movement reveals the correct anatomy and this is why movement and anatomy should never be separated.
Coat:
Fits outline of body, very dense. Outer coat straight and harsh to touch, undercoat soft, furry and very close almost hiding the skin, mane and frill very abundant, face smooth, ears smooth at tips, but carrying more hair towards base, front legs ell feathered, hind legs above hocks profusely feathered, but smooth below hock joint. Hair on tail very profuse. I think that the explanation in the standard saying that 'coat fits outline of body, very dense, outer coat straight and hard to touch' can be more and more fairly questioned. Sometimes it looks like the only comprehensible part of the explanation is 'very dense', since there are more and more winning dogs whose only attribute is dense coat, whereas all the other requirements are ignored. Sometimes one can hardly spot a dog underneath all its dense coat, which is too soft by touch according to the requirement of the standard.
Image
Gait/Movement: Classic type
The dog is moving lightly with long steps, elastically, parallel, and is congruent even in the movement.
Coat: Classic type
Even though the coat is dense enough on the entire body, it fits the body, it is hard by touch, the lines of the body are emphasised.
Gait/Movement: Modern type
The dog’s step is too short, it lacks energy and elasticity, the body is not congruent enough.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
September 2016 - 33
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 33
Coat: Modern type
The only thing that is emphasised on a dog with such a dense coat is the quantity of the latter, underneath which all the body lines are covered. A Collie is still a Herding dog and all this quantity of soft coat becomes too heavy in bad, wet weather which can be very unpleasant for the dog. For this reason, it is important to follow all the requirements of the standard, not just the 'very dense coat'. Finally, the standard quotes at the end of the description: Faults: Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog. The standard does not explicitly quote the faults, but it is clear enough by saying that any discrepancy from the standard should be considered as a fault and taken into account in a dog’s evaluation. The most important, however, is the fact that the standard has never written about any different types of the breed, the classic and modern variants have never been mentioned and one can therefore fairly ask oneself what is the sense of dividing the breed into those two types, each of them having numerous fans. Humans can't help but intepret a standard differently, however there are limitations to how far we may carry our interpretations and still be correct.
34 - September 2016
Any interpretation that opposes the standard is a fault on the dog and tolerating and letting faults propagate through breeding is not only ignorance of the standard, but also represents an egoistic relation to the breed and letting the breed change in discordance with the standard. It is understandable that congruence and proportionality can be interpreted slightly differently. To one person they mean a higher dog, to another a longer one, yet another means that the head is slightly too small or too big, etc. But the essential parts of the standard – the exact descriptions of the breed properties - should always be interpreted uniformly. For example, if the standard clearly requires that a dog’s head should be wedge-shaped with parallel muzzle and skull lines, that the tail must extend at least to the hock joint, that the body is longer than higher, etc., then no other interpretation should be tolerated. Any interpretation that opposes the standard is a fault on the dog and tolerating and letting faults propagate through breeding is not only ignorance of the standard, but also represents an egoistic relation to the breed and letting the breed change in discordance with the standard. Although I titled this article 'The Classic And The Modern Type of The Collie', there is only one professional explanation to conclude it with. We can not discuss the two types of Collies, the classic and the modern, but only 'the correct and the incorrect type' and the distinction between them is written in the one and only existent breed standard of the Collie. Collies Rough &
The most famous Collie in these early years was Old Cockie, born in 1868 and registered with the Kennel Club in 1871. He was the first sable and white Collie ever seen and of course the first so registered. His pedigree was unknown. He was famous because the sable colour proved dominant over tricolour which is why the sable and white is the more common colour today. One of the other famous Collies at that time was Old Cockie’s grandson, English Champion Charlemagne.
Smooth
By Jane Armatys Keamaree
From the Beginning to the Present
Old Cockie
he origin of the Collie goes back almost to Roman times, when in Scotland the coally or Scotch sheep dog was used by shepherds. The word ‘col’ in Anglo Saxon meant black so the original Collie was a black or tricolour dog. Sheepdog Trials were held long before the first dog Show took place in England. At Birmingham National dog show in 1860, a separate class was provided for all varieties of sheepdog.
Charlemagne
It is of interest to note that at the dog Show held at Crystal Palace in 1873, classes were provided for both rough and smooth sheepdogs. While the sable and white and tricolour are the better known colours, the blue merle was a colour arrived at largely due to the efforts of W. Arkwright in the 1870s. In Scotland, they attracted the attention of one very famous dog lover and breeder, Queen Victoria, who became fascinated by their beauty and their ability.

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
She set about establishing her own kennel, a move that started the transition from the field to the show bench. She successfully showed them and needless to say set a trend that was to see them make a very rapid move into the homes of dog lovers and pet owners. While Queen Victoria had a good eye for dogs, she favoured whites that are no longer found in the show ring in the U.K. Over this period of time, by selective breeding and the attraction of exhibiting, the Collie improved in many ways, so that it was not used much as the shepherd’s dog but more for exhibition. The longer coats were ruined by the dogs running through the fields and so by the 1930s the Collie was more precisely know as the 'English Show Collie' which attracted even more attention and popularity. Probably no breed has been more highly acclaimed by the population throughout the world than the Rough Collie. When the Collie did evolve as an identifiable type, it was slightly different from today’s breed. It had a broader skull, shorter head and a more pronounced stop.
A good way to detect a good coat is by the way it dries - it should dry out with a few good shakes and should not tangle. The markings on a Collie’s coat did not come by accident either. It was carefully bred into them so that the shepherd could distinguish the dog in all weathers and lights. The Collies, like many popular dogs, has its share of inherited diseases, although attitudes by breeders over recent years has done much to reduce the numbers of affected dogs. There is the Collie Eye Anomoly or CEA, Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA and careful breeding and eye testing can reduce the incidences of these. Hip Dysplasia is found in many of the larger breeds but with careful breeding this is not usually a problem.
Judging the Collie First and foremost, the Collie is a working dog, a sheep dog. INSERT PHOTO OF COLLIE HERDING Photo3
While much of the work in the field has been taken over by other breeds (i.e. the Border Collie) a good Rough or Smooth Collie could still be capable of working and still have the physical attributes of a working dog. For example, the eyes should have an intelligent expression and the dog should look alert as though waiting to be given an order. They should be capable of covering many miles a day in a working situation and therefore should have the strong feet of a sheepdog.
It is a medium sized dog. I will just touch on the most important aspects of judging the Collie. It should instantly appeal as a dog of great beauty - standing with impassive dignity with no part out of proportion to the whole.
They should be compact, well knuckled and thickly padded. Like all working animals, a Collie must have a well laid shoulder in order to move as well as good angulation of the hindquarters. A dog that has faults in these areas will suffer in movement and in the field will feel the effects of jarring. They also need strong bone and good flexibility in the pastern and hock. The coat is all important in a Rough Collie and it should be remembered that it is textured to protect the dog from adverse weather conditions. It must fit the outline of the body, be very dense, straight and harsh to touch. It is a double coat, the undercoat being soft and furry and providing warmth and insulation. The amount of undercoat a dog is carrying will dictate whether the coat lies flat or stands off.
This is a head breed, the expression is very important - this is obtained by the perfect balance and combination of skull and foreface, size, shape, colour and placement of the eyes, correct position and carriage of the ears. The correct eyes in particular give the sweet, dreamy expression you are looking for. You are looking for an almond shape, dark colour and not too small. If the eyes are too small, the dog will have a mean or foreign expression, you do not want a light eye either. A round eye is also not desirable but it is more preferable to a small deep set eye as they do not spoil the expression as much. The skull and foreface lie in two parallel planes of equal length divided by a slight stop. The head resembles a well blunted, clean wedge, being smooth in outline.

Continued from page 37 Expression can appear a little different depending on the dog's colour, but no matter what the colour or markings, that 'sweetness' should always be there. To have a dog move correctly, you are looking for a dog that is slightly longer than the height at the withers (i.e 10 long to 9 high). It should also have well sprung ribs, good depth of chest and very important are the well laid shoulders and a good turn of stifle. The tail reaches to the hock and may be carried gaily when excited but never carried over the back.
There is about 5 acres of history in beautiful landscaped gardens. In the early days, a feature was the wisteria that was over the house and in fact they were over most of the property and still remain today. The old home is now gone but the marked graves, the lookout, puppy yard, rotunda and much more is still there. With the lake at the bottom of the property, it is a very peaceful and beautiful place and every August, Collie people travel to attend 'The Gathering' and have puppy matches and spend time in this special place.
Movement is a distinct characteristic of the breed. A sound dog moves with its front feet comparatively close together. The hind legs when viewed from the rear should be parallel, should be powerful and full of drive. Viewed from the side, the action is smooth. A reasonably long stride is desirable and this should be light and effortless. Do not confuse fast movement with good movement - watch where the dog's paws are going. Colour I am covering in a separate section as this is also important.
The Magic of Sunnybank Sunnybank in New Jersey U.S.A was home to Albert Payson Terhune and the Terhune family. His love of Collies and wonderful books he wrote no doubt increased the popularity of Collies at that time (1920's). His books are very popular and much sought after even today. Some of the more famous ones are: • • • • • • • •

Collie Colours In Country of Origin, Australasia and most of the world there are only 3 recognised colours. These are Sable and White, Tricolour and Blue Merle.
Blue Merle
Sable and White
Tricolour
In America, White Collies and more recently, Sable Merles are also recognised. The white Collies are not produced from mating 2 blue merles together (which produces defective whites) but from the mating of 2 white factored Collies. They can have Sable, Blue Merle or Tricolour on their heads and also in patches on the body.
Typical Collie white markings are also present. A rusty tinge to the black coat is undesirable. Blue Merle is predominantly clear silvery blue, splashed and marbled with black. It is preferred that there are also rich tan markings as in the tricolour but their absence should not be penalised. Large black markings, slate colour or a rusty fringe to either top or undercoat are highly undesirable. The typical white Collie markings are usually present in a greater or lesser degree. In merles, one or both eyes may be blue or blue flecked. All three colours are equally acceptable and a matter of personal preference. Judges should not allow colour preferences to influence their decisions.
Smooth Versus Rough The Smooth Collie was imported into Australia quite early in the history of the colony as a working dog in a pioneering rural environment. The Rough Coated did not come until later, probably around 1880. It is a matter of history that the Smooth Collie, in its varying colours, contributed to those distinctly Australasian breeds, the Kelpie, the Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, the Australian Cattle Dog and the NZ Huntaway.
Rough 'Blue Merle'
Rough 'Sable'
Smooth
Smooth 'Tri'
The breed also has what is termed 'typical white Collie Markings’ and these are white collar - full or part, white shirt legs and feet, white tail tip and there can be a blaze on the muzzle or skull. Sable is any shade of light gold to rich mahogany or shaded sable. Light straw or cream colour is highly undesirable. Tricolour is predominantly black with rich tan markings on legs and head - above eyes, sides of cheeks, chest and inner sides of legs.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Rough
The major difference between the Smooth and the Rough Collie is the coat. Where the Rough has a long body coat, with abundant mane and frill and profuse hair on tail and legs, the Smooth’s coat is short and flat. Both coats are double with harsh straight top coats over a dense, soft close fitting undercoat. There are some other more subtle differences between the two varieties. The smooth breed standard draws attention to the intelligence, alertness and activity as well as dignity of the breed and its appearance of working capability, whereas the ‘great beauty’ and ‘impassive dignity’ of the rough are emphasised. Additionally, the Rough’s ears are described as ‘small’ while the ‘Smooth’s’ are moderately large.
September 2016 - 39
Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 39 In temperament, the Smooth is ‘gay and friendly, never nervous or aggressive’, while the Rough has a ‘friendly disposition with no trace of nervousness or aggressiveness’. Both varieties have undoubtedly high intelligence and loyalty.
Comparison of Collies Worldwide There has been much change from the early years when English Collies were exported to both America and Australia.
This trend is also evident in some European lines but fortunately many of the good breeders are still breeding the true 'Classic Collie' which is what we all should strive to produce world wide. Many of the top examples have been produced by the careful blending of USA, English and Australian bloodlines. We must continue to strive to do this or we will lose our beloved breed. If breeding were left up to mother nature, we would have round eyed, moderately long headed, prick eared Collies. Length of head, correct eye placement, shape and size, round muzzles and lightness of head are all governed by recessive genes and in order for them to remain within our breed, they must be constantly bred for, every generation, otherwise they will be lost forever. The same can be said for temperaments. Temperaments on the whole in USA are excellent and it is something we in Australia need to be aware of – the Collie is not a timid or nervous dog, but unfortunately you see it creeping in.
Ch Myoene Aristocrat
There have been changes to the look of the dogs and the grooming style of the dogs as well as the conformation in many cases. American Collies are trimmed more than Australian Collies and many exhibitors use a lot of product in the coat to achieve the desired ‘stand out’ effect. I noticed recently while judging in California and also viewing the Collie National with 800 Collies, that their presentation and handling are excellent. As their standard is 2 inches taller than ours, you also see longer hocks and many are not as well angulated both front and rear. There are many excellent specimens over there and the same as anywhere else, some mediocre ones. An article by Hazel Hunt questioned what has happened to the English Collie - looking at photographs in the International Handbook over the years, certainly many have quite a foreign look and unfortunately some breeders have wandered off the track and are breeding dogs with short stuffy necks, triangular heads and dished stops. To quote Mrs Hunt 'our rings are now full of dogs with profiles more like bears than Collies and movement to match'.

This became one of the biggest earners MGM ever produced. Few people were training pets professionally in those days. The four Weatherwax brothers - Rudd, Frank, Jack and Max had a natural gift in training animals and Rudd was training an 8 month old male Collie named Pal. He failed in the initial auditions because they really wanted a female Collie. The one selected was so out of coat by the time they started filming that they recast again, this time looking for a male dog. This time after a really good display in a river swim scene, Pal got the part of Lassie. The Lassie image of courage, wisdom and devotion made the Collie a very popular dog.

A series of Lassie sequels were filmed between 1943 and 1950 with Pal holding the part until his son took over the television series. In 1993 in honor of her 50th year of enthralling the world with her adventures, 'Lassie' appeared in a new book and a new movie. That new Lassie was No. 8 and was a descendant of Pal, the original. Rod Weatherwax, son of Rudd (the original Lassie’s trainer), is the latest Lassie’s owner and trainer. She was a once-in-a-lifetime dog. She first appeared within the pages of a storybook and when she romped across the movie screen, we wiped our tears again watching 1940s Cinemascope. As many as 300 Collies, most of them well-groomed sable hopefuls, as called for in the book, tugged on their leads in a long line that stretched along the sidewalk outside the old Hollywood Stars ballpark. The star that measured up to the studio standard would earn the leading role in 'Lassie Come Home', the classic bedtime story about a poor Yorkshire family who must part with their faithful Collie. Eric Knight got the idea for the book from a dog tale he had been told as a child. After the great success of the book, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. purchased the movie rights in 1941 for less than $10,000 and two years later cast two English child stars, Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowell.

Zone 2 Dog World Column, September 2016 s we start moving towards the latter part of the year, our attention now turns towards the major events at this time. One in particular coming up is the Dog Of The Year and Puppy Of The Year competitions which have proved very popular for members across the State.
What’s On in Zone 2 in September? In September, Zone 2 members have a choice of several events to participate in, including: • • • • • •
Capricorn Coast Kennel Club Championship Shows (Rockhampton) – 3rd and 4th September Gladstone Dog Obedience Club Obedience and Rally-O (Gladstone) – 3rd and 4th September Maryborough Dog Obedience Club Obedience, Agility, Jumpers and Games (Maryborough) – 3rd and 4th September Hervey Bay Kennel Club Championship Shows (Bundaberg) – 10th and 11th September Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club Track and Search (Rockhampton) – 10th and 11th September Magpies Mackay And District Obedience Club Double Agility, Jumping and Obedience Trial, Single Rally-O and Snooker (Mackay) – 17th September
With fewer events on in the Zone during September and quite a few events on outside of the zone, many members from the regional areas will be travelling. Best of luck and safe travels to all competitors travelling to competitions.
Date Claimer – Dog Of The Year and Puppy Of The Year Competitions It’s not long now until these competitions are on. Make sure you start remembering those qualifying results, get your entries in, book your camping spot ready to look forward to a fun weekend where we celebrate the achievements of our dogs.
Show Workers and Club Members This topic has been discussed a few times but I do like to keep reminding people that we are desperately short of Show Workers and Club members who are the backbone of our ability to run Shows and Events. Without these people, the work just wouldn’t happen to make it possible and for us to enjoy our dogs in these events. Please get involved as a Worker at Shows or a Club member, or preferably both! Any contribution is valued and can be tailored to the time you have available, no matter how little. Working at Shows as Stewards and Writers is easy and Dogs Queensland has developed some great training to support you in this; and our Show Managers are generally only too happy to help someone learn the ropes. If everyone did just one appointment each, we would probably only all have to work once in about every three months. Also, our Clubs are chronically short of Workers to assist with setting up and packing up for our Events and Shows. Any assistance with this would be so greatly appreciated. We are almost at the stage now where Clubs may be forced into the position where they cannot continue or surcharges will have to be added to bring Workers in for Shows (which is already happening with some Clubs).
Rules in Action – Leaving before showing The Rules don’t cover every situation where an exhibitor leaves an exhibition without showing one of their dogs in a Class that it should be presented for. This commonly happens when judging General Specials and one or more exhibits are called absent because they and their owners go onto the road home hours before. Rule 222 states: Any dog including Challenge winners, but excluding Best of Breed winners, may be withdrawn prior to Group Specials, providing the Ring Steward is officially notified of such withdrawal, and the catalogue marked to that effect.
This event is also a great social opportunity for our members to enjoy our hobby in a relaxed atmosphere.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Rule 223 states: With the exception of dogs eligible for Champion of Show, Runner Up in Show or Opposite Sex of Show, dogs eligible for the remainder of General Specials may be withdrawn provided the exhibitor obtains the permission of the Show Manager or, where there is no Show Manager, the President of the body holding such exhibition and personally notifies the respective Ring Steward in charge of the Group in which the dog was entered and judged. Basically, these rules mean that if you are in the running for a major award, it is ok to leave the exhibition if you need to, however you do need to notify the appropriate official/s that you are planning to do this rather than just not turn up when required.
Dogs Queensland will continue to keep members informed of developments in this space and does thank the members for the ongoing feedback, thoughts and suggestions put forward to try and assist in this task by our members – it is appreciated.
Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time.
Members should also perhaps consider, in fairness to other exhibitors who may wish to stay and compete, that if they are not intending to stay, they withdraw from the relevant Group Classes. This would mean that your intention not to compete further, does not adversely impact on other exhibitors who may wish to do so. As a matter of common courtesy to others, this is good practice along with keeping officials informed of what you are doing.
Queensland Government Puppy Farming Legislation Members would be aware of the proposed Legislation by the Queensland Government which looks likely to require our members to be registered as breeders with the State Government. Dogs Queensland representatives have been engaging with ongoing communication with Government advisors and representatives to discuss alternatives about how Dogs Queensland and its members can be recognised as reputable operators. We are hopeful that some beneficial outcomes can be arrived at and continue to work towards that goal on behalf of our members. I would like to thank the delegated representatives of Dogs Queensland for their dedication to try to achieve this goal.

Foreign Attitudes Toward Dogs Fred Lanting, in the USA
ad news makes headlines and sells papers and increases TV watching. With the news so heavily oriented toward the unfortunately 'newsworthy,' truth suffers. The loudest lion, cicada, or bullfrog gets the most attention and does the most reproducing, but in the human world, the biggest mouth does not usually belong to the person with the biggest or best brain. People who have not travelled and/or read widely often have erroneous or limited understanding about politics, dog fancy and other features of foreign lands. The untravelled and unread tend to paint all in any particular country with the same brush. Since I have judged and lectured in over 30 countries that have a wide range of 'dogginess,' I think I have a somewhat more accurate view. Let me first generalise by saying that there are three main types of attitudes in the world toward dogs.
44 - September 2016
One is familiar to most of this column’s readers: the European-North American environment where dog ownership is not only widespread but where the dog is considered a family member or sports companion. Include Australasia as well, since those folks are almost like geographicallydisplaced Europeans. Sometimes it reaches the extreme, with dog cemeteries or pets sleeping on owners’ beds. When we were still newlyweds at the end of the 1950's in New Jersey, we had neighbours 'displaced' by the military he served in, who had a crib with dolls and such trappings for their pet dog. He explained that many natives of his home state of Hawaii idolised dogs to the same extent. The second large 'group' of people with relationships to dogs covers most of Asia and South America. Yes, there are many who relate to dogs in the same way as do those in the first group, but there are far more who don’t.

In such lands, we find relatively huge numbers of feral dogs, a result of tradition and poverty. These feral dogs eventually interbreed so much that the result eventually is a crossbreed canine that looks very much the same regardless of where they develop. I have dubbed this 'The Universal Dog' because I have seen this 'breed' all over South America, South Carolina (The Carolina Dog), the Fertile Crescent (Canaan Dog variety), India-Pakistan, Malaysia-Indonesia, Taiwan and the Philippines and the Caribbean. Sometimes they look like they could have come from the same litter! In that large doggie dispersion, attitudes toward dogs are molded mostly by economics and religion. First, consider the economic influence. Poverty means that street dogs get the very worst offal after humans have eaten and have scavenged as much as they can. In some cases, this may help keep vermin populations and garbage-buildup somewhat modulated. However, in such poor regions, it is still possible for feral dog populations to become problematic. If the general economy improves a bit without a corresponding change in attitudes toward (and control of ) canines, numbers can mushroom.

Continued from page 45 The Muslim world’s attitudes toward dogs is gravely misunderstood by most people that do not interact with them. And these attitudes vary widely for a number of reasons. One is the several sects of Islam, most of whom are very antagonistic toward each other. If they didn’t have non-Muslims to aim their Kalashnikovs at, they would be killing each other off even more than they currently do. Of those around the world identifying as Muslim, more than 85% are of the Sunni sect, although sometimes their political Government might be Shi’ite-dominated (that sect comprises between 10 and 15 percent). Those of the Sufi, Baha’i, Ahmadiyya and possibly Alawi groups are much smaller. Once in Pakistan, I attended a rather wild gathering of pot-smoking religious mystics and whirling dervishes, most of whom were Sufis. The young man who took me there was an Indian version of a hippie, though the son of a Christian bishop! In each of these branches or sects of Islam, we find a wide spectrum both of 'depth of religiosity' and of attitudes toward dogs, these two being often but not always related. That spectrum is roughly correlated with geographical location in the world. The stricter the interpretation of Islam, the worse off are the lots of dogs and dog owners, such as the lands around the Fertile Crescent. Sometimes it seems that the more affluent the country with high Muslim population is, the better off dogs are - England, for example. But that is not the case with wealthy countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, UAR, or even less-well-off ones such as Egypt and Indonesia, where there is not that correlation. I have seen the situation in many such countries as a dog Show Judge. We must not paint every person of a given nationality or ethnicity with the same brush. In most countries where Islam is dominant, there are various degrees of freedom and tolerance, as well as adherence to traditional attitudes toward dogs. Photo credits: Supplied by Fred Lanting

Judges Education A Breeder's Perspective
By Judie Evans (Clarion Collies)
How do we as breeders define what makes a good Collie judge?
After breeding Collies for over 35 years, I know from experience that should you breed away from the correct expression or head type, these virtues can be lost in a single generation and getting them back is a difficult task.
What is it that we would like you to focus on when you are invited to judge our breed?
The overall picture of our breed is its most basic characteristic, since without it, none of the elements that make up the whole dog, however correct or beautiful they may be, are sufficient to make it a true Collie.
Obviously we know that any good Judge can be expected to appreciate showmanship, glamour, presentation and grooming. We also know that basic structure and soundness are qualities that most understand. What separates those Judges respected and sought after by long time breeders from the Judges that we unfortunately see passing off their generic opinions at many all-breed Shows; Shows where all too frequently Collies win that have no real merit and lack breed type? The answer is knowledge and understanding of those virtues that the Standard emphasises and the ability to recognise and reward that quality over those superficial characteristics that are far easier to attain.
48 - September 2016
The Collie’s expression is a great priority. No Collie can be properly judged until its expression has been carefully evaluated. I am an 'outline person,' and the picture of a Collie posing majestically showing me that picture of balance, elegance and beauty still can take my breath away. We want the Collie to be proud and impressive; an elegant, arched neck, well laid back shoulder, level back, gently sloping croup... a picture of curves rather than angles.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Club Interest The Queensland Dog World
The coat is important, not just in quantity but in that it fits the dog and is of correct, harsh texture. I also feel strongly about how the Collie should be shown in the ring. Contrary to what we sometimes observe in the Show ring today, he should not have to be strung up on a tight lead to manufacture the desired overall picture of elegant balance. He should not be expected to stare, mesmerised by a chunk of liver or be wired up like a terrier... this is not the Collie. We also want you to understand Collie movement. Contrary to the belief that the Collie is just a 'head breed,' we do value correct movement. Despite what we see as desirable in some breed and most group rings, faster is not better. A Collie is meant to cover ground. His movement should be smooth, reaching and effortless when
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
viewed from the side. As his speed increases, he should single track: a desired characteristic of the Collie. The one who runs the fastest does not necessarily get the prize here and although this may be the trend in the all-breed ring at the moment, it is not the movement of a Herding dog. These things being said, we can talk about what makes up a really exceptional Collie, the one who not only is worthy of winning dog Shows but also has the virtues that are essential to the breed. The Collie Standard places great importance on head qualities and expression and no one aspiring to judge this breed can do a competent job without a thorough study of the Standard.
Long time Collie breeder Trudy Mangels of Brandwyne fame writes in her book, The Evolution of the Collie, “The head is the feature which distinguishes the superior from the ordinary. In no other breed of dogs is the head as important in evaluating superiority as it is in the Collie. So what is it that we want you to focus on here? We want a head inclined to lightness in relation to the body in our breed... more head is not better. The Collie head should be a lean, wellblunted wedge. It should be smooth and well finished, with parallel planes of approximately equal length separated by a slight but perceptible stop.
September 2016 - 49
Club Interest The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 49 It is much easier to get these parallel planes on a shorter head. The virtues of smoothness and finish of foreface, flat frontal bone and well-filled skull are more difficult to get on a longer head. Mother Nature is constantly working against us in these areas and long time breeders appreciate how difficult it is to achieve that correct profile and the beautiful finish while maintaining a long, light head and these are virtues to be recognised and rewarded. The Collie’s expression is a great priority. No Collie can be properly judged until its expression has been carefully evaluated. It is basic to judging our breed that you understand that the Collie eye is to be of medium size, dark, almond-shaped and set obliquely into the head. The Collie’s expression is created from the combination of the rounded muzzle, correctly placed stop, oblique eye set and the carriage and set of the ear. The expression should be sweet, quizzical and melting. These are not simple concepts to grasp, but without the correct head and the desired expression, we really do not have 'the Collie.' All the cuteness, showmanship, clever grooming and cosmetics will not make it a good dog. The Collie is to be a lithe, active dog with balance and harmonious proportions. It should never show any problems associated with bad temperament or be lacking in alertness (showmanship) or responsiveness.

THE COLLIE CHARACTER Supplied by Mim Bester, Baqilodge Collies
ach breed of dog is different in appearance and each breed also has its own character traits. The main character traits of a breed often reflect the purpose for which that breed was developed. Collies are sheepdogs and although most these days will never work as sheepdogs, their attitude, temperament and physical characteristics should reflect their sheepdog birthright.
There are two varieties of Collies, but they both are the same breed. There is the wellknown Collie (Rough) that has the long, thick glamorous coat and there is the Collie (Smooth) that has a short, dense coat. The Smooths have a coat that is easier to care for, but they are not as well-known as the rough variety, which were made famous by the Lassie movies. Because the Roughs and Smooths are one breed, the varieties can be interbred and in the resulting litter, there usually will be both Rough and Smooth coated puppies.
It is believed that the Rough, with their big insulating coats, worked in the highlands of Scotland and Ireland, while the Smooths worked in the lowlands where temperatures were often slightly warmer. Both had very similar jobs, although we think the Smooth had a greater role in droving sheep to market along lanes and roads, while the Roughs’ main tasks were herding and maintaining a flock on the hills and moors.
The English Collie breeder and author, Margaret Osbourne, wrote:
He is gentle, clean and kind. His absolute loyalty and trustworthiness makes him the perfect companion, and his innate understanding of his owner ensures that he is a joy to possess. He is a gentleman – he is one of the most beautiful members of the canine race – he is, in fact, a COLLIE. Baqilodge Breezealong - minding her family

Both varieties of the Collies (Roughs and Smooths) share the same breed characteristics, which is expected as they are the same breed. However, breeders and owners have noted minor differences in personality between the Collie (Rough) and the Collie (Smooth). The Smooth is a little more active and robust and often is described as 'already doing it', while the Rough is 'still thinking about it'. Both varieties are easy to train and very intelligent.
The Smooths have a coat that is easier to care for, but they are not as well known as the Rough variety, which were made famous by the Lassie movies. The Collie was originally bred to work with a shepherd, caring for sheep. A dog entrusted with this job must be able to work with a person and take directions but be intelligent enough to think for themselves, when required to do so. They had to be alert and watchful of their flocks. They also needed to be gentle, nurturing dogs, as it was sometimes their job to find lost lambs and bring back sick sheep.
Est. 1977
For all your RIBBONS AND SASHES call Tina to discuss your club needs.
As a sheepdog, they were required not to be too friendly with strangers. The shepherd needed a loyal, staunch companion, not a dog who would socialise all over the district. It was necessary for them to be active when there was a job to be done but to be calm and quiet when the sheep and shepherd were resting. Even though most Collies are not working sheep any longer, they still retain the above attributes. They are easily trained and usually do very well in obedience training - however, because of their intelligence, they can become bored quickly and do not like to repeat the same lesson over and over again. If they are made to do so, they will often put in their own variations on the task. They will end up doing what was asked, but in their way! They are very much a family dog and will take a great interest in all family activities, but frequently they choose one family member who they will consider their master.

Continued from page 53 Collies usually take a special interest in children and their herding and minding or nurturing instinct is often applied to them, as well as to other animals (sometimes you will get the distinct feeling that your Collie is looking after your children so that they don't come to any harm). They will also be very keen to join in family activities to go walking, jogging, camping, etc. but at the end of the day, they will be happy to rest contentedly and quietly with their family. There have been many well-documented cases where Collies have saved or rescued people from dangerous situations and Collies feature regularly in the Dog Hero Awards held in America each year. So you can see Collies are alert, intelligent and dependable dogs. Your Collie might be aloof with strangers. This is what has been required of them as a sheepdog. They are also very good at being able to determine if there is something different or unusual happening in their environment and they will let you know, making them a useful watchdog. Collies love to play games that require a bit of imagination. How much time and love you give them will determine how well their intelligence and personality will evolve. These can be developed to an extremely high level. The higher the level the more rewarding a companion they will be.
They have a highly developed sense of humour and thoroughly enjoy being in on a good joke, but they will be offended if they think the joke is on them and they are being laughed at. Some Collies will even 'smile' by pulling their lips above their teeth. Many individuals of this breed will also 'talk' to you, by making vocal sounds in response to you talking to them. Collies need a calm and predictable environment. Loud noises, raised voices and frequent tension in the household can make your Collie nervous, anxious and even aggressive. These sweet dogs have soft, loving and gentle personalities and they need the same kind of home life to flourish. Collies have rather stoic natures and bear pain without whimpering or whining. It can be difficult to tell if your Collie is unwell or is hurt. For this reason, it is wise to check with your veterinarian if your dog should suddenly limp, stop eating or seem listless. Some breeds will limp or whine for sympathy, but never a Collie. This lovely breed (both varieties) is very gentle and sensitive and has an intelligent playfulness and cheekiness that will endear them to you forever. They make loyal and constant companions. Photo credits: Supplied by Mim Bester, Baqilodge Collies
One very important thing to understand when it comes to training or teaching a Collie is that they may be led or guided but never pushed. Collies will learn very quickly if treated with kindness and gently shown what is required of them. They will refuse to learn and will generally sulk and become very stubborn if they are shouted at or handled roughly. If you treat your Collie poorly, it can become almost impossible to undo the damage - they do not forgive intended transgressions. However, they will immediately forgive genuine mishaps, such as accidentally stepping on them. They always know the difference between an intended action and an accident.

The Collie temperament is ideally suited for this breed to be used across all dog sports.
Ch Cathkin My Little Black Dress CDX, RN
Originating in the 1800's, it was used and bred for herding in Scotland and today here in Australia is growing in popularity as a versatile breed used in dog sports disciplines such as Herding, Tracking, Obedience, Rally-O, Agility / Jumping, Dancing, etc. The Collie is being represented across all of these dog sports disciplines, performing with excellence. This is mostly attributed to the Collie being a gentle, sensible and intelligent dog who is incredibly loyal wanting to please. The Collie also has the necessary drive to perform and work and the contemporary training methods of positive reinforcement suit this dog's temperament perfectly. The more recent increase in popularity here in Australia is also attributed to the success of social media being used to promote this breed in dog sports and the great work of some of the breeders in the country.
