President’s Message

“T

he month of August has passed so quickly, and for our dog world it has been a very different August in this most unusual year. In a normal year, we would have had an array of conformation all breeds shows, specialty shows, dog sports events capped off with the Ekka and of course our All Dogs Sports Spectacular during August. We have certainly had the westerlies but there have also been some high points too. Due to COVID-19 a number of States and Territories have been unable to hold dog shows and events. It has been great that Dogs Queensland and in particular, the Conformation Judges Committee (CJC), have been able to hold three weekends of Open Shows over July and August, and on 22 August, the first day of the practical Hands On Examinations for our trainee judges in Groups 1, 2 and 6. These have been great days and well supported by our members. The changed arrangements on the grounds due to COVID-19 requirements worked well. The running of these events entails a high level of organisation with extra workers, equipment and monitoring. A bouquet to the office and the CJC and the many volunteers and workers who made this happen. The atmosphere was great and the happiness of our exhibitor members being able to get out with their dogs was palpable. However, we are living in dynamic times with this pandemic and we need to be able to respond quickly to changes on a day to day basis. The fact that we opened the office for member access on 17 August and then due to COVID-19 concerns in the South/West region closed it a week later is one example of that. Our duty of care to both our employees and our members is an abiding concern. Our Hands On day on 22 August was another good example of that. That very morning the Premier made an announcement in the light of the COVID-19 case of an employee at the nearby Wacol Juvenile Detention Center. Allowed gatherings were reduced immediately to 10 inside and 10 outside with the exception of those who had a COVID Plan in place.

Fortunately, we do have a plan for up to 500 people outside at our Durack Showgrounds, so our event was able to proceed. The Brisbane Lure Coursing Club was due to have lure coursing the very next day at a nearby venue. They sought guidance from the Queensland Health department hotline and with the position not clear decided not to proceed with the event. There has been some comment about South Australia being able to run dog shows more “normally” without the masks and other measures we require at our Durack facility and asking why we can’t proceed the same way. Keep in mind that each dog body is required to comply with the legislation in their own State or Territory and we are complying with the Queensland legislation. Yes, it is strict but personally I believe there are sound reasons for that. When I saw the mask free photos of the Queensland judges and successful exhibitors, I did think that they were pre COVID-19 but that was not the case! Dogs Queensland is in the process of completing a COVID Industry Plan that would underpin and allow events at Durack for up to 750 attendees next year. So far, this document runs to more than 40 pages and it has a way to go and needs to be lodged by mid September. A big thank you to our directors Sharron Taylor and Barb Murfet and those in the office for the many hours they have expended on this initiative. Once lodged it will take 3 to 4 months for processing by the Queensland Government. It is so hard to know what 2021 will bring. Perhaps we won’t need this wider plan but if we do, the work will have been done. And for those wondering, our big specialty days and the ADSS attracts numbers in that territory.

Good News

At our Board meeting on 24 August 2020 it was decided by the Board that planning would commence for the staging of All Breeds Conformation Shows at the Durack Sportsgrounds on Saturday 24 October 2020 and also on Saturday 28 November

DOG WORLD September 2020

2020. Of course, this will be subject to any prescribed Queensland Government restrictions. In addition, the Board has decided that planning can commence for the Festive Fiesta from 27 to 31 December 2020. In order to accommodate COVID-19 requirements the 5 shows will be scaled down to 3 Championship shows that may include a CACIB Breed Show, subject to ANKC and FCI approval. These shows will be held in conjunction with the Kennel Association of Qld and will include a Junior Handler event and also an Open Show/ Field day. So, some good events for us to put in our diary and look forward to. For those not planning to exhibit it would be great if you could consider volunteering some time on the day to assist with the extra personnel required in running events in these COVID-19 times. Clubs in Zones 2 and 3 have been invited to apply for shows and events. Some applications have been forthcoming but the additional imposition of COVID-19 requirements are not easy to meet. Once again, if you can assist clubs in these zones with volunteering time and your skills please contact them.

And finally….

On a sad note, I advised members last week about the resignation of our director Jeremy Cook from the Dogs Queensland Board. He will be sadly missed but the good news is that he continues as a valued member of Dogs Queensland. We look forward to Jeremy continuing to work closely with the Board and the office on a number of initiatives and projects to the benefit of our wider dog world. There is no doubt that we have some small pockets of negativity and unpleasantness in our dog world. This is a challenging time for all of us on a range of fronts. I understand that these challenges vary depending on individual circumstances. It is important that we look out for each other and continue to be supportive particularly as this pandemic goes on. I think that we all have our networks of friends and acquaintances in the dog world that we look out for. If you do hear of someone needing and lacking support, please contact a director or the office so that contact can be made.

Queensland, advising their judging status, has been received by them. A member who has previously held Championship Show status may apply for reinstatement. Where a period of absence has occurred from the Judges List, reinstatement will be considered only after the member concerned has passed 90% of an Open Book examination on a number of the major breeds in the Group(s), plus those breeds which have been introduced by the ANKC during their absence. In some instances, particularly for longer periods of absence, the CJC may require a practical assessment which would be conducted using similar procedures to the Practical Examination as described in Regulations 29-40, and at a date to be determined by the CJC. Should the candidate fail the assessment, they would be added to the Open Show Panel and be required to fulfil the requirements as set out in Regulations 16-22. BOXER

The Boxer ... not only has a reputation for his great love and faithfulness to his master and household, being a fearless protector of all but is particularly tolerant and protective of children and loves to join in their games whenever the opportunity arises.

18

DOG WORLD September 2020

INTRODUCING THE BOXER The Boxer is unique in the dog world; no other dog is more individual in appearance. His trim, square built body is strong, muscular and elegant, with a head having no equal. His noble bearing, strong character, alert expression and confident attitude have attracted admirers all over the world. He is a medium sized dog with a short coat, strong limbs, a seemingly endless supply of energy and all the desirable qualities that make him an ideal family dog. There are two sides to the Boxer character. He not only has a reputation for his great love and faithfulness to his master and household, being a fearless protector of all but is particularly tolerant and protective of children and loves to join in their games whenever the opportunity arises.

“The “Doggen” family of heavy chase dogs … from the Middle Ages … have in the course of time developed into …

1. The heavy Bullenbeisser (Mastiff).

2. The large hound evolved by crossing the Bullenbeisser with the Wolf or Deerhound (Great Dane)

3. The small Bullenbeisser which represents a smaller form of the heavy Bullenbeisser through natural selection (Boxer and English Bulldog). Boxer, Lustig v. Dom of Tulgey Wood. Int. Sieger and American Champion.

Even in old age, the Boxer never fails to be interested in family activities – a fun loving dog that has a way of edging his way into the hearts of all those who come to know him. The Boxer’s needs are few, as long as you provide a warm place to sleep, suitable food to eat, much love and attention and good exercise, you will be rewarded with a lifetime of loyalty and companionship. Boxers come in two colours, brindle and red, with differing amounts of white markings. Reds can vary from a pale fawn to a rich deer-red while the brindle coat consists of a red background colour with black stripes banding the entire coloured area, ranging from lightly brindled to almost black. Finding a responsible breeder is the surest way to buying a happy, healthy puppy. The Queensland Boxer Club can put you in touch with breeders with many years of dedicated experience.

HISTORY OF THE BOXER From The Boxer by John P Wagner 1939. “From time immemorial a strain of dogs distinguished by their heavy heads, wide short muzzles, powerful build and great courage carry down through the centuries.”

THIS PHOTO OF LUSTIG VON DOM WHELPED IN 1945 SHOWS HOW LITTLE THE BREED CHANGED IN THE NEXT 75 YEARS.

“The first Boxer Club was formed in Munich in 1986 under the name of Deutscher Boxer Club. Soon Boxer Clubs were formed in other parts of Germany under different names. In 1905 all the Clubs combined and accepted the Munich Club’s Standard and Stud Book as official. This resulted in a uniform breeding program. The original Standard was fundamentally the same as our Standard of today.” The first Boxers are believed to have arrived in Australia in 1947, first exhibited in 1948 and the first Boxer Club in Australia was formed in 1949.

BOXERS IN TRAINING Boxers are extremely intelligent and quick to learn though their reputation as a buffoon may belie this fact. They were used in the trenches during

DOG WORLD September 2020

19

the wars and are still used as Police Dogs, Guide Dogs and for Drug Detection and for Search and Rescue. Boxers in obedience have not been as successful as some other breeds mainly due to lack of concentration rather than brains. They learn their lessons quickly and easily become bored with repetition. A Boxer would much rather be playing with the other dogs than focusing on what his owner wants. To approach training with your Boxer, make it pleasant and fun rather than boring and repetitive. Don’t rush your training – be patient with small progress.

THE POPULAR BOXER Since their appearance, Boxers quickly became popular around the world, usually ranking in the top ten breeds. They have attracted the attention of many famous owners along the way. Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart appeared in many photos with their Boxers. As have Luke Perry, Clark Gable, Cameron Diaz, Shirley Temple, Ryan Reynolds and Pablo Picasso to name a few. William Peterson’s Boxer even appeared with him on a number of episodes of CSI.

Being such strong and exuberant dogs, Boxers should be trained from an early age. A firm, no nonsense approach is required and if training is given in small doses without becoming tedious, both owner and Boxer will enjoy it. Sometimes with Boxers, it is one-step forward and two steps back. The important thing is not to get discouraged and give up. Use lots of rewards for encouragement and focus. Of course, as well as Obedience you could also try your hand at Rally O, Agility, Tracking and Lure Coursing. With their natural abilities for chasing, jumping and possessing a very keen nose, Boxers have had great success at these sports.

20

DOG WORLD September 2020

HEALTH AND TEMPERAMENT The breed standard reads, “The Boxer is docile but distrustful of strangers. He is bright and friendly in play but brave and determined when

roused. His intelligence and willing tractability, his modesty, and cleanliness make him a highly desirable family dog and cheerful companion. He is the soul of honesty and loyalty. He is never false or treacherous even in his old age.” The Boxer is not a dog you can buy and then ignore. He wants to be part of your family and involved in everything. Boxers can be quite soft and they are easily offended and hurt if badly treated. They might look intimidating but they should never be aggressive. In fact, aggression is considered a fault in the breed. Boxers are susceptible to two main inherited heart conditions. Cardiomyopathy is a heart rhythm problem and Sub Aortic Stenosis is an issue with the valves of the heart. Responsible

breeders will be aware of these conditions and only use dogs that have been heart tested. Cancer is the other big issue with Boxers. Any lumps or bumps should be checked out as soon as they are noticed in case they are a dangerous form of cancer. Being very active dogs, they can succumb to “sporting” injuries but regular exercise to help condition their muscles and preventing them from silly jumping will go a long way to keeping them fit. THE QUEENSLAND BOXER CLUB The Queensland Boxer Club was established in 1958 and is affiliated with the National Boxer Council and the Canine Control Council (Qld). We love to promote our breed by bringing specialist Boxer judges to our Dog Shows, at Pet Expos and the All Dog Sport Spectacular and through our Family Fun Days. We are looking forward to hosting the next Boxer National Show in 2022. Visit our website www.qldboxerclub.org , see us on Facebook or contact the club by emailing secretary@qldboxerclub.org

LEPTOSPIROSIS All you need to know

– Karen Hedberg BVSc. As a number of members have expressed further information regarding the Leptospirosis outbreak in Sydney, Dr Karen Hedberg BVSc has provided the following information to help understand and alleviate any concerns.....

Areas affected in Sydney The area affected in inner Sydney is the same as last year and includes Newtown, Erskineville, Darlinghurst, Glebe, Redfern – basically a 3 km radius around Surrey Hills. It is thought that with all the major building projects, including removing sections of railways, and other changes within the area has forced the rats to move into surrounding areas. Outbreaks, when they occur, can be very localised and may be more common in humid environments. What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a bacteria that can survive in various areas including flood waters, puddles, mud or other moist areas. In animals, it can survive in animal tissues and urine, with rats and mice being the major carriers. How is Leptospirosis transmitted? Leptospirosis is a very nasty bacterial disease generally spread by contamination of food and water sources by rats and mice urinating on these surfaces and materials while they feed. Infection can occur through open wounds and via mucous surfaces including the mouth, nose and eyes. Humans can also become infected through the same routes and Leptospirosis is considered a zoonotic disease. If you have a diagnosed infected dog, you should handle it carefully with gloves and do not let the dog lick your face. Transmission to

The numbers affected by Leptospirosis continue to be very small. The total number affected in the previous year was 12 (fatalities). The exact numbers and areas affected this year has not changed in the last 6 days. humans from dogs rarely occurs, but it can occur. Symptoms Symptoms of infection can vary, with lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea and blood in the urine being the most common. Treatment requires hospitalisation with vigorous fluid therapy, antibiotics and other medications to try an avoid massive kidney failure as the bacteria specifically targets the kidney tissue. Prevention The prevention of this disease (apart from vaccination) is by having very good (and safe) rodent control and removing any extra sources of moisture – puddles, damp areas. Food sources such as dry dog food should be kept in metal bins – rats and mice will eat through plastic and normal coverings of dog food bags. Keep surfaces clean, spray down working benches and kennels with normal disinfects daily. Vaccination for Leptospirosis Vaccination for Leptospirosis requires 2 vaccinations given 2 weeks apart of the C2i vaccine (which covers Leptospirosis and canine Corona virus). This vaccine once administered has a good uptake and will last for quite some time. Only dogs in the nominated areas need to be vaccinated, no other areas have been reported at this time. If you are in an area with a high rat infestation, vaccination for Leptospirosis should be considered.

THE SILENT MAJORITY – Getting Out The Vote

– David Margan Many of you are maybe well aware that our Board elections are on the horizon. It’s a moment of democracy in our own organisation but unfortunately many members don’t appear to regard this opportunity as an honour, a right or a responsibility. Of 6,297 members listed as eligible to vote in our last board election in February 2019 only 1349 did – that’s just 21.42% of our membership. Given you had the option of a postal vote or simply voting on-

line it couldn’t have been easier to participate. Why is that I wonder? Is it disenchantment? Disinterest? Voting is perhaps the only thing that should be compulsory. In the United States where it’s not, Presidential election voting numbers never exceeds 60%, while fewer than 40% of eligible Americans vote in congressional elections. One other reason for those sad figures in the ‘home of democracy’ is the use of deliberate policies and tactics that suppress the rights of citizens to vote. And the result? A divided and dysfunctional nation where actors, reality TV stars and even hip hop artists can become President. In Australia during the 1920’s non-compulsory voting in Federal elections had fallen to under 60% and so voting was made compulsory and polling shows that 70% of the population support a compulsory vote. I’ve always engaged in a vote wherever it was

offered and never had much time for those that didn’t, especially when the vocal members of the ‘don’t vote’ crowd are constantly criticising and complaining about the very thing they have the power to change, improve or contribute to. As noted Australian academic and philosopher, Peter Singer, has written; “a minority of the population can determine a country’s future, leaving a discontented majority.”

So this is a plea to the silent majority of Dogs Queensland membership to take a small amount of time and bother to vote. This is YOUR organisation, it’s of YOU and for YOU. It is YOUR money that is being spent – running an election costs thousands of dollars, so why not use it? You can and will make a difference for the better by getting involved, nominating and getting out the vote.

DOG SPORTS - FLYBALL

– An exciting dog sport for competitors, handlers and spectators. Flyball is a relay race for dogs consisting of two teams of four dogs. Each dog jumps four hurdles, retrieves a ball by triggering a flyball box pedal and returns over the hurdles back to the start/finish line before the next dog can begin their run. The first team to have all four dogs successfully complete their runs are the winners. Flyball is a team sport founded on the activities dogs love to do – run, jump, fetch, retrieve, compete and most of all, their desire to please their owners. Any dog over 12 months of age regardless of breed, size, shape or formal training can participate and join in on the fun. While formal training isn’t necessary, dogs do require socialisation and basic obedience skills prior to competing. The sport reinforces the disciplines taught in obedience classes. COMPETITION At race meets, dogs are placed into speed-based divisions enabling every team to have a fair go and be competitive. The fastest race in Division 1 while

30

DOG WORLD September 2020

the slower teams compete in lower divisions based on the combined time of the four dogs in the team. Up to two reserves can be interchanged after each heat and there is either three or five heats per race. At bigger competitions, such as the AFA’s Annual National Championships, there can be up to 10 divisions, as well as a veteran division (dogs aged 7 years and older) and an open division (open to any group of 4-6 dogs, regardless of which team they usually run for). To make the open and veteran divisions more competitive, racing is handicapped based on their seed times. HISTORY The earliest known Australian flyball activity was in 1982 in Perth (Western Australia). Flyball was a demonstration-only activity until 1996, when the Australian Flyball Association (AFA) was formed. The AFA grew out of Queanbeyan in New South Wales, and race meetings rapidly spread from New South Wales to the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia have more recently held competitions.

ANKC RECOGNITION The sport is recognised by the ANKC. Under an agreement between the ANKC and AFA prior to July 2012 some ANKC registered dogs have flyball titles recognised on their ANKC pedigree. The current agreement includes provisions for titles to be recognised retroactively provided the AFA title certificate and Dogs Queensland title application can be verified and payment requirements have been met. An owner can apply for a title that was achieved from 1 July 2012. If you are looking for a new and stimulating way to spend time with your pet – then why not give flyball a go! INTRODUCING A VERY REMARKABLE DOG

‘JACK’ HEYDEN

– Lynne Heyden For anyone who has ever truly loved a dog, you will understand the depth of emotion and respect I hold for this remarkable boy. Jack was born in 2006 and died at the age of 12 in 2018. He will never be forgotten by so many people who loved him but never more than by myself. His parents were both Grand Champions and from the moment I held him as a baby I knew he had wings. Like all Cavalier King Charles Spaniels he loved people so he took to the show ring easily, taking in his stride any command I gave him and was titled early in his career. Socialising with humans and dogs was a joy to him – cats he cleverly respected!! A career change saw us packing up our swags and moving from Queensland to Geelong in Victoria. My husband had a 24 x 7 job and I was left to find something useful to do to occupy myself. On the very first day we arrived, I picked up the local newspaper and there it was …. ‘Wanted Delta Therapy Dogs’ …. It was a sign!!!! After complying with regulations including Police Clearance, vaccinations etc for Jack we attended the big testing day. There were 20 dogs there, all different. Jack was the only Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The testing procedure was gruelling, requiring close depth of understanding and response from both the handler and their dog. The hardest test of all was walking your dog past dishes of food and expecting the dogs not to partake. Jack did hesitate at the last plate and looked up at me as I gave his lead a little tug, asking me the question ‘please’, a firm ‘No’ and he continued on with his tail still wagging. Only 9 dogs were considered

36

DOG WORLD September 2020

and Jack was called up first with all the assessors clapping wildly. We were assigned as a Delta Team to the Boorapool Nursing Home (Bupa) and began the best days of our life. Jack took to his visits like a duck to water. He had such wonderful empathy with the terminally ill, gently laying his head on their hands or body if they wanted him to and they certainly did. We were only allowed 10 minutes with each resident, and it was always hard to walk away for both them and for us. I could recount many an amusing situation but will just stick to two that were both amusing and sad at the same time. One was a beautiful lady named Pat who had a Cavalier (also a Tricolour) of her own before being admitted. On our very first visit she thought her boy had come back to her!! We stretched out our 10 minutes to 15 – I then picked up Jack and made to leave. Pat went into panic mode, pressed the emergency button and wildly accused me of trying to steal her baby away from her. When the nurse arrived, I indicated to her that ‘Pat’s boy needed to toilet’ and so escaped to our next visitor. As Pat had advanced dementia, she apparently forgot quickly and so we went through

this drama every visit for 2 years until Pat passed away. She adored him. The other case was a similar situation, which I quickly learned to deal with – a delightful Scot, called Paddy. Apparently he was a farmer and had a beautiful Border Collie called Joe who he had adored for many years. So, every week Jack became Joe and Paddy would wrap his arms around him and never let go!! Consequently, Paddy became our last visit and we would sit there with him, with Jack understanding Paddy’s need to love him – usually until Paddy would go to sleep and then I could steal my dog back and go home. Never once did Jack turn his head away from any of the 56 residents. We also visited the Geelong Hospital and were assigned to the Cancer Ward. This was a difficult assignment as Jack could ‘smell’ death and he became unusually quiet and reticent. I would pick him up to place him on the bed with a patient (as was our usual routine) and he would look at me conveying such terrible sadness that I asked to be reassigned to another ward. He really loved the kids. Some 8 months down the track a little boy with a remote-controlled fire engine chased him around the ward with the damned siren blaring and Jack resorting to hiding under beds and cupboards. Finally, Jack looked at me and said loudly ‘ENOUGH’ get me out of here. We progressed on to primary schools and ‘dog reading’ to assist young children who had confidence problems in communicating with their peers and teachers. His job was to win the confidence of the children and listen to them read giving them a lick of encouragement and being so wonderfully patient with them. My job was to ‘read’ for Jack, ask his opinion on what ‘he’ was reading and engage the children. We had many wonderful and productive sessions with these children. Jack interacted perfectly, sometimes being completely overwhelmed with so many loving little hands, but always responding to the gentle commands I gave to him. I still have 5 Cavaliers whom I love so dearly, but have never quite made the wonderfully unique connection that I valued so dearly with Jack.

How to love and survive your teenage dog – AND KEEP

YOUR SANITY! Like humans, all dogs go through a teenage phase. Their brain is wired for exploration and they are physically in their prime – with energy to spare! In her new book How to Love and Survive Your Teenage Dog, Delta Institute qualified dog trainer Barbara Hodel shows how you can successfully cope through this challenging life stage, improve your relationship with your teen dog, keep your sanity and even have some fun! Contrary to puppy training, there is little information on teenage dog behaviour and training, says Barbara, who is also president of the Pet Professionals Guild of Australia (PPGA). “Dogs – depending on their breed – become teenagers as early as 7 to 8 months and reach maturity around 24 to 28 months. In this period, they can show incredibly challenging behaviours that often go to the core of our relationship,” she says. “They pull like steam trains, don’t come back when called, get stroppy with other dogs, create their own jobs like digging up the yard or eating the pool lights, they startle easily, test boundaries, bark, chew a lot and are very emotional, just like human teenagers.” Dogs who don’t come back put themselves and others at risk, pulling dogs are hard to take out and their emotional reactions (eg lunging and barking at ‘strange’ things or people) can be considered aggressive, Barbara explains. “They behave like this because their brain is still under construction and they don’t assess situations properly. Humans also take it personally if their dog does not behave in a socially acceptable way and that can be to the detriment of the relationship,” she says.

38

DOG WORLD September 2020

Many pet owners believe puppyhood is the most challenging time and are not prepared for adolescence, she adds. “Science is just starting to confirm that teenage dogs are challenging and with no science-based, humane and ethical information on how to deal with them, they might end up in the backyard, in rescue or worse, euthanised at an early age!” she said. “With the right attitude, additional socialisation, training and a good sense of humour, we can get through the teenage phase and have fun with our challenging dogs!” Barbara’s book is a complete guide to your teenage dog, covering everything from brain development, emotions, best practice training and training tips on how to do it. “We need to focus on developing a trusting relationship, keep them mentally and physical active and have an open line of communication. We then need to teach them to be calm and think before lashing out, and teach them some foundation ‘obedience’ behaviours, such as paying

attention, enjoy their walks, come when called and behave at the dog park,” says Barbara. Barbara top ‘pawrenting’ tips for teen dogs:

penetrating TRAUMA Penetrating trauma is when an object pierces the skin, enters the dog’s body, and creates an open wound; damaging the underlying tissue. Joanne Bibby – Fursafe® Penetrating trauma is when an object pierces the skin, enters the dog’s body, and creates an open wound; damaging the underlying tissue.

Causes Some ways in which a dog can experience a penetrating trauma is through; • vehicle trauma – being hit and thrown into fencing, steel rods, star pickets • hunting accident – being shot by a rifle, gun or arrow • animal attack – being bitten by another dog, a cat or a feral animal

40

DOG WORLD September 2020

• physical violence – for example a knife attack • playtime trauma – such as running into a sharp object, running with a stick The object may become embedded in the dog’s body. If this occurs you must never attempt to remove it – if you do, you may cause further internal trauma.

Safety precautions Penetrating trauma can be a consequence to so many situations that it is difficult to set a simple set of safety precautions, however in line with the above causes mentioned, the following may assist in mitigating the risk of your dog being injured or

First Aid:

fatally wounded by a penetrating trauma: 1. Protected your dog from traffic or vehicles in general; 2. Never take a domestic dog hunting with you or into known hunting locations; 3. Learn to read the signs when new or strange animals are telling you or your dog to back off; 4. Keep your dog on a leash and always be aware of animals roaming near by, especially when camping or bushwalking; 5.

Dogs carry sticks often at the end of the stick, teach them to pick them up from the middle or better still don’t allow playtime with sticks at all;

6. Don’t throw sticks to your dogs either – they may catch it awkwardly, run into it or it could hit them from a great height; 7.

Always check the surrounds of where your dog is playing to ensure there are no sharp objects; which can be found in disposed rubbish, piled up building materials, mechanical parts or tree branches piled up after recent winds and so forth.

never put a muzzle on a dog who has breathing difficulties).

b. Is your dog responding to your voice or your touch? If not, your dog may be unconscious. c.

Send for help; if there is someone else in the house get them to do things like get the first aid kit, help carry dog into house, prepare the car and call the Vet. They may also be able to help you restrain your dog.

d. Check the airway for vomit in the mouth, or foreign object and remove if there is. e. Check the breathing (respirations) feel / watch the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing. f. Check circulation (pulse) – start CPR if no pulse. 2.

Stabilise object. Use donut bandage, or place two rolled bandages either side of object; then use another rolled bandage to wrap and secure all in place.

Never pull out, or apply pressure to object 3.

If the object is too long, attempt to cut it down to a manageable size if possible, without applying pressure to object. Leave stabilisation in place;

4. Manage severe bleeding and open chest wounds as required;

Your dog may show some or all of the following:

5. Calm your dog; restrict pet’s movement; wrap in warm blanket; and

Infection at dog bite puncture site.

6. Get to vet.

Open chest wound with or without an embedded object.

If you have a driver:

If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration on the way to the vet surgery.

Breathing difficulties from injury to lungs.

If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR on the way to the vet surgery.

FADING PUPPY

SYNDROME Fading puppy syndrome is a term used to describe puppies that are apparently normal at birth but die within 5-10 days of birth. Fading puppy syndrome can affect a single pup or multiple pups in a litter. Many of these puppies are vigorous and healthy at birth, but lose interest in suckling over time. The bitch is usually in good health, with no known association between this syndrome and dystocia, poor mothering or poor lactation. Fading puppy syndrome is not a specific diagnosis or disease. The proposed causes for this condition include but are not limited to poor mothering, inadequate lactation, constipation, trauma, congenital abnormalities, low birth weights and infection.

Understanding the vulnerability of a neonate

A newborn puppy is an immature animal that is highly dependent on the bitch for survival in the first few weeks of life. This is due to four main factors:

• Unable to regulate body temperature

A puppy in the first week of life is vulnerable to hypothermia. They rely on the warmth from the bitch to maintain their body temperature. A puppy is not able to shiver to increase its core temperature until 6-8 days of age.

• Prone to dehydration

42

DOG WORLD September 2020

Image:Pixabay

– Royal Canin

As 82% of the neonate’s body weight is water and kidney function is immature, the neonate is particularly susceptible to dehydration.

• Risk of hypoglycaemia

Failure to nurse results in a rapid depletion of energy reserves leading to hypoglycaemia by the second day of life.

• Immature immune system

It is important that colostrum (the first milk) is ingested during the first 12-24 hours of life that passively provides the neonate with the antibodies required to fight infection in the first few months of life. The Normal Neonate Observation of a neonate’s behaviour is usually one of the best ways to observe for early signs of fading puppy syndrome. A normal newborn puppy exhibits the following behaviours:

• The eyes open at approximately 2 weeks

• Puppy should purposefully crawl and

• A normal puppy has a rounded abdomen

but eyesight is poor up to 5 weeks of age

search for a teat

full of milk, a warm body and elastic skin • Spends long periods in deep sleep, interrupted by short periods of body twitching. This behaviour disappears after four weeks

Colostrum: passive immunity

Colostrum is the first milk the bitch produces in the few hours after whelping. One of the key functions of colostrum is to pass on maternal antibodies to the neonate to provide immunity against common infections. Colostrum is only absorbed in the first 12 hours of life due to gut closure. Gut closure is where the intestinal wall in the puppy loses the ability to absorb colostrum, and is completely closed at 24 hours after birth. Royal Canin performed a study on neonatal puppies looking at the levels of antibodies in the blood and association with neonatal death. The study demonstrated that neonatal death in puppies was strongly associated with the quality of the passively acquired immunity (level of antibodies). This emphasises the need to ensure all neonatal puppies receive adequate colostrum intake. Without appropriate colostrum intake, the risk of infection greatly increases for the neonate.

There is no reported treatment for fading puppy syndrome. Early supplementary feeding of suspected fading puppies may improve survival. If you suspect a fading puppy, it is best to seek veterinary attention for the puppy.

During the COVID-19 pandemic orders can be placed for Royal Canin and Eukanuba dog food by phoning the Dogs Queensland office on 3252 2661 during office hours (Monday Friday 8am to 5pm).

Prevention is difficult to describe as no specific cause has been identified for fading puppy syndrome. A variety of breeding management systems have been studied with no common management-linked factors associated with neonatal death. There is a tendency for certain dams to have successive fading litters, whilst other bitches experience no problems.

Once payment has been received, orders are placed in the Royal Canin designated pick-up zone for collection.

Review of breeding management especially at the time of whelping and through the neonatal period may help to decrease losses.
