President’s Message

I

think that we all knew this year would be different, and it certainly has been. And our dog world has had its share of disappointments, happy times with our dogs, and challenges. The array of event cancellations in July and August was disappointing, but understandable, given the way the Delta variant has taken hold down South. However, the surge in vaccination levels has been very encouraging. Although the Ekka was cancelled and the All Dogs Sports Spectacular postponed and other events have been cancelled or postponed, a number of events and shows have been able to continue here in Queensland and for that we are grateful. What has become clear is that organisers at club and Dogs Queensland office level need to be nimble footed and be able to change arrangements and judges in a matter of days before scheduled events. We have become much more flexible in getting events and shows happening, sometimes with less than a week’s lead time. Club officials and the office are to be commended for rising so effectively to this challenge. It does show that we can be flexible and that is not such a bad thing as we look to doing things more effectively in our dog world. Agricultural Shows I have a been a keen supporter of dog shows at Agricultural Shows for many years. I see it is a continuing opportunity to interface with the community at these Show Society events and showcase what our dog showing is all about. Of course, the premium Agricultural Show in Queensland is the Ekka and, sadly, that did not happen this year because of COVID. It would be great if just the dog show could still happen, but time will tell. These shows are all about giving the public a great experience and opening doors about what our dog world is all about. The community love of dogs and all our dog breeds and seeing the dog show is top of the “to do” list with surveys of people attending our Royal Show events.

4

DOG WORLD September 2021

A recent local example of this was the Gold Coast Show Society Inc show last weekend. A bouquet to David Kill and his team in running a successful and well organised event in a compact section right on Marine Parade at Southport. As you will see from the photos it was a huge drawcard to the public with David keeping up a dialogue with those moving through and explaining what was happening and how to get a better spot to view the judging action.

Breeder’s Terms Contracts For those who are unaware, this is a practice that has developed over the last number of years. It is all about ownership of the dog sold to a family, couple or person. The usual position is that a person buys a dog for an agreed price, and they become the owner with a requirement under our rules that the breeder transfer the dog into the name of the new owner.

Images: Justice Andrew Greenwood

Duty of Care Reminder As responsible dog owners and dog breeders and as members of Dogs Queensland we are acutely aware of the importance of good temperament in our dogs. During COVID some owners and breeders have had additional challenges in getting their dogs out regularly and this may have had some impact on proper socialisation. Whilst I understand this, it does make it incumbent on our breeders and dog owners to focus more on socialisation. During our conformation dog shows and dog sports we owe a duty of care to anyone meeting our dogs that they can do that safely. This includes other exhibitors or competitors with their dogs, judges, and members of the public. Last weekend we had a shocking attack on a dog judge whilst judging in Northern Queensland. Fortunately, that judge is recovering but I believe it is timely to remind exhibitors and breeders of the very important responsibilities they have in this regard. As a dog breeder I place the highest importance on the temperament of the dogs I breed, and I know this is a priority with other breeders. We breed to improve our lines and an important and quite wonderful consequence of that is having puppies available to the community as family members. Good temperament is critical. So, if a dog shows unprovoked aggressive tendencies this needs to be managed by the owner or the breeder in an effective manner. At our events we have very strict measures that Show Managers are required to comply with. Any report of unprovoked aggressive behaviour results in a hearing by a panel of 3 at the show or event with a decision made on the spot. If the dog is found to have been aggressive a 6-month suspension of the dog is immediately imposed with some attendant appeal rights.

An amendment happened to our rules a few years back making an exception to this requirement of transfer. This is where a “Breeder’s Terms Contract” (BTC) is signed by both the breeder and the new “owners” and lodged with the office. Sometimes these are referred to as “guardian homes” and I understand the breeders have been referred to by the NSW government as “Sovereign Breeders”. The requirements vary under the BTCs and depend on what the breeder wishes to stipulate. But common to these arrangements is that the dog remains in the name of the breeder, despite the fact that the people have paid a purchase price or consideration for the dog. Also, the breeder has the right to access the dog for litters or stud work as the case may be. One concern is that there is a clear inequality of bargaining power between the breeder and the keen puppy purchasers. Also, it closes off access to a new pool of members for Dogs Queensland. A clear alternative to these arrangements is a co-ownership arrangement with the new owners and the breeder as partners. That would require a partnership agreement setting out the respective rights of the parties and would be lodged with the office when the transfer occurs. And yes, the new owners would be required to become members of Dogs Queensland for the dog to be shown or bred from. And yes, breeding of a co-owned bitch would require a transfer of the dog into the sole name of the breeder with the prefix to enable the breeding to occur. These contracts were discussed at the Board meeting on 30 July, 2021. The Board is keen to consult with members on this and a survey will be going out to members shortly to allow feedback. In addition, please feel free to give email feedback to rob@dogsqueensland.org.au This matter will be on the agenda for the next Board meeting when consultation feedback will be provided. Stay safe

DOG WORLD September 2021

– Jennifer Watt

HISTORY The stories and legends of the origin of the Chihuahua are varied and many but like so many legends we must read between the lines for the faint glimmers of truth. Chihuahuas are reputed to have originated in the Valle de Allende in the State of Chihuahua in Mexico from where they acquired their name. These little dogs were the sacred dogs of the Mayan Indians and the Toltecs and trace back to between the 7th and 9th centuries A.D. It is written that the Aztecs followed the Toltecs and that they continued to develop the breed. When an Aztec Indian chief died all his belongings, including his little dog, were burnt and the legend goes that when the Indian crossed the nine deadly rivers of the fearful underworld the little holy dog with the symbolic cotton cord tied around his neck would be waiting on the farthest bank for his master. As soon as the little dog recognised him he would swim across the turbulent waters and guide his masters soul to safety. Amongst the wealth of material passed down from the early Indians, especially from Colima, are statues, which are unmistakably Chihuahua’s. These statues are known as the pottery dogs of Colima. It is said that they could depict the hairless edible breed, the large ancestor of the modern dwarf Chihuahua. The Spanish were to conquer Mexico in the 16th Century and it is reasonable to assume that specimens of the smooth coat Chihuahua were returned to Europe and some believe that these were crossed with long coated spaniels, little Italian spaniels or “comforter” as they were otherwise called which in turn produced the little papillon of later years. Many of the little dogs resembling Chihuahuas have been depicted in oil paintings, particularly in Italy and it is well known that a similar variety of the smooth coat Chihuahua existed on the island of Malta. It is interesting to note that by 1935 in the U.S.A the breed was definitely showing the results of mixed breeding, particularly with the terrier breeds. Mrs Ida Garrett, one of the greatest pioneers of the breed in the U.S.A travelled many miles looking for litters of Chihuahuas and mentions that for years she interbred the smooth coat variety with Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Papillons and Poodles. She crossed the offspring back to the Chihuahua and only after about three generations it appeared that a Chihuahua similar to the long coat (as we know it today) evolved and was eventually registered in the U.S.A. It was not

DOG WORLD September 2021

9

until 1952 in the U.S.A that long coats were separated from smooth coats and the Long Coat Chihuahua Club founded. The Chihuahua Club of America was founded in 1923. Long coats were unknown in Mexico before 1959 but original smooth coat registrations go back to 1934. Chihuahuas were known to have been kept as pets in the U.K. as early as 1850 but they were not registered there until 1907. Up until 1940 in the U.K. there were only 59 registered. During the Second World War a number of dogs perished so that by 1949 there were only eight Chihuahuas registered in the U.K. It was not until 1954 that the first challenge certificates were issued for the breed in Glasgow, Scotland and in 1965 Chihuahuas were classified as two varieties and judged separately as they are to this day. Cross mating of the two varieties was allowed in the U.K. until about 1978 when it was discontinued. In Australia the two varieties were separated in 1966 when separate Challenge Certificates were offered and whilst some States continued to cross mate the two varieties, it was banned in N.S.W until 1982. After strong representation to the R.A.S.K.C. a trial period of five years ended in 1987 with cross mating in N.S.W. to continue indefinitely. The breeding stock which has established and improved the breed in Australia has been and still is to this day predominantly English which in turn was based on Mexican and U.S.A. imports. Sadly, few Chihuahuas have been imported from Mexico and the U.S.A. to Australia.

GENERAL INFORMATION CHARACTERISTICS: Chihuahuas are a breed that are suited for all types

10

DOG WORLD September 2021

of people – singles, young families and retirees. The breed will generally adapt itself well to the situation it is placed into. It has often been said “Chihuahuas are like potato chips - you can’t stop at just one”. In saying this, the breed is always good in pairs as pets. Predominantly a typical “Toy Breed”, and being known as lap dogs, the chihuahua can also excel in dog sports because they are so active and agile, as well as being keen hunters/ ratters if given the opportunity. Some have also been known to be trained as therapy dogs. They are happy in all types of housing situations – units, townhouses, residential blocks and acreage living. This is a breed that will self exercise as required, and whether they are running around a fenced yard or inside a house or unit, they don’t mind. They still like to have a walk around their neighbourhood, but this is more to make sure the neighbourhood is just the way THEY would like it to be. TEMPERAMENT: The Chihuahua is an alert, saucy little dog, with a happy temperament and they should never be snappy. They should have a trademark “Apple Dome” skull, with large ears and large round eyes (not bulging or protruding) – this gives them their special appeal. It is important that a Chihuahua be trained from a young age and definite boundaries be set in regards to behaviour. Even though the Chihuahua is small in statue they must still be of sound mind and body.

JUDGES’ TRAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS Regulations for Judges Training Conformation 2021/2022 SelfEducation and Self-Funded Program

6.

The JTP is a continuous program. Persons who are unable to continue in the system due to illness, injury or issues of a personal nature, should apply in writing to the CJC for a leave of absence for a suitable period.

General

7.

Members are not permitted to accept judging appointments or sign contracts to judge, until official written notification from Dogs Queensland, advising their judging status, has been received by them.

8.

A member who has previously held Championship Show status may apply for reinstatement. Where a period of absence has occurred from the Judges List, reinstatement will be considered only after the member concerned has passed 90% of an Open Book examination on a number of the major breeds in the Group(s), plus those breeds which have been introduced by the ANKC during their absence. In some instances, particularly for longer periods of absence, the CJC may require a practical assessment which would be conducted using similar procedures to the Practical Examination as described in Regulation 38, and at a date to be determined by the CJC. Should the candidate fail the assessment, they would be added to the Open Show Panel and be required to fulfil the requirements as set out in Regulations 17-21.

9.

A member who has previously held an Open show status and has previously passed the theory exams for a Group may apply for reinstatement to the Open show panel. To then proceed they must complete all the requirements of the current Group Training Program.

1.

The Rules and Regulations of the Dogs Queensland Judges Training Program (JTP) are amended from time to time; such amendments are published by DQ. These Dogs Queensland Regulations for the JTP comply with the philosophy of the ANKC Rules but also accommodate necessities required by the diverse nature of metropolitan and regional Queensland. These regulations are effective immediately.

2.

Aspiring judges and all interested members are reminded that membership in the JTP confers no automatic right to become a Judge. Dogs Queensland will consider the suitability and behavior of all applicants entering the JTP. Becoming a Judge requires successful completion of the syllabus following which the aspiring Judge must earn the privilege to be registered and acknowledged as a Judge. This privilege may be withdrawn should circumstances warrant and after all facts have been considered.

3.

An essential requirement of acceptance, and continued progression, in the JTP (including applications for both theory and practical examinations) is a demonstrated significant and continued participation in the management or operation of an affiliated Dogs Queensland Club or Committee. Trainees must complete the “Club Activity” form each year. This documentation MUST accompany ALL applications; including first time applicants, theory examinations and practical examinations, irrespective of the number of Championship Show groups a Judge may hold. Applications which do not include this mandatory documentation will be rejected unless appropriately documented reasons for extenuating circumstances are approved by the Conformation Judges Committee (CJC).

4.

The Dogs Queensland JTP is available for eligible members of Dogs Queensland who are residents of Queensland. Queensland residents who were previously members of other ANKC Affiliates and were previously in an equivalent ANKC recognised training program, will be recognised under a reciprocal agreement, provided all requirements are fulfilled.

5.

Any persons who were previously resident in another State or Territory (and members of that State or Territory), and were not in the Judges Training Program, and who are now bona-fide residents of Queensland, may apply to enter the JTP upon providing a letter from their previous controlling body showing they comply with the entry requirements for Aspiring Judges.

14

DOG WORLD September 2021

10. Any Trainee Judge or Aspiring Judge who is found to have engaged in unsportsmanlike or unprofessional behavior or has breached the Dogs Queensland Rules or the Dogs Queensland Code of Ethics or the Board of Dogs Queensland Judges Code of Ethics, or is not fulfilling training regulations, will be held accountable and may be suspended or removed from the JTP and / or the Judges Panel. 11. The CJC, in determining whether to remove or suspend, will consider all the facts and will provide their recommendation to the Board of Dogs Queensland. 12. A right of appeal is available, and an appeal may be made to the Board of Dogs Queensland in writing within 14 days of the official notification of the removal or suspension.

Definitions 13. Terms used in these Regulations are defined below: a.

JUDGES’ TRAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS iii. Anatomy & Movement, iv. Dentition and v. Canine Glossary of Terms. d.

The final examination date for the Introduction to Judging Program, will take place on the second Thursday in July each year. This will be conducted at Durack for metropolitan candidates and with the Regional Coordinators for remote candidates.

e.

Aspirants, who are unable to attend the examination on the second Thursday in July, may apply to the CJC for dispensation for a deferred examination and must supply supporting documentation for the claim. If successful upon application, the CJC will nominate a secondary date for Aspirants to sit the deferred examination.

f.

Upon passing the Introduction to Judging Program examination, Aspirants must then apply to the CJC for their Primary Group as a Trainee Judge.

g.

Aspirants who do not pass examinations in the Introduction to Judging Program, may re-apply the following year.

Group Training Program/Theory 17. Applications to attend lectures are to be submitted to DQ before 15th July using the prescribed form available from the DQ website. Trainees may apply for one (1) group per year (October to July). Split groups are not allowed. ie. Trainees are unable to be sitting theory exams for two (2) groups at the one time. 18. For each Group Training Program, a Trainee will be expected to complete the following requirements: a.

Attend all breed lectures which will be delivered via Zoom, unless otherwise advised.

b. Pass all breed lecture theory examinations (that is a mark of not less than 75% for each of part A, B, C and D);

c.

Attend a minimum of 4 field days.

19. Breed Lectures: Trainees must attend all breed lectures for their nominated Group, commencing in October of each year, as published by DQ. Groups will be divided into a maximum of 4 sub-groups. Each field day is mandatory and if missed, trainees will be ineligible to sit for the theory exam for that sub group.

Missed Lectures:

A trainee may miss a maximum of two (2) lectures in

16

DOG WORLD September 2021

one training year provided that they are not both in one sub group. (A B C D sub groups)

N.B. A trainee must attend a minimum of 80% of the duration of a zoom breed lecture, or this will be classed as a missed lecture.

To be eligible to sit for the examination in the sub group where a lecture has been missed, the trainee must

a.

Watch the recorded Breed Webinar as soon as possible after the missed lecture, and

b. Write a 1000 word Breed information essay and submit to the Group Coordinator within 14 days of the scheduled lecture.

N.B. Once a trainee has missed more than two (2) lectures in any one year, they will not be eligible to sit for any further theory exams in that year.

20. Breed Lecture Examinations: For metropolitan candidates, theory exams will be conducted at Durack and for distance trainees with the regional coordinators at the end of each sub-group. Dates will be advertised by DQ in September each year as per the Scheduled Breed Lecture dates. All theoretical examinations will be on the ANKC breed standards. The final theoretical examination for each Group will be held on the second Thursday of July each year. 21. Any candidate who does not achieve the required pass mark in a Breed Lecture Examination, will be required to re-attend the relevant breed lectures the following year and re-sit that sub-group examination. Candidates will not be able to sit for their final Hands-on Examination in any Group, before all Breed Lecture Examinations have been passed. a.

Trainees, who are unable to attend any examination due to exceptional circumstances, may apply to the CJC for dispensation for a deferred examination and must supply supporting documentation for the claim. If successful upon application, the CJC will nominate a secondary date for Trainee to sit any deferred examination.

b. Once all sub group theory exams have been successfully completed the candidate will then be placed onto the Open Show Panel.

Practical Training 22. Once a candidate has successfully completed the theory examinations and are placed onto the Open Show Panel, they must judge a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) dogs at Open show level and a minimum of Four (4) full Groups.

JUDGES’ TRAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS a.

Breed club numbers will count towards the one hundred and twenty (120) dogs but the trainee must still judge a minimum of four (4) full groups.

24. When a judge obtains Championship status in a Group, they may apply for a further Open show Group to bring them up to a maximum of four (4) Open Show Groups.

b.

The candidate must have a minimum of two (2) satisfactory assessments completed by an accredited assessor whilst judging the full group. The trainee can choose their own assessor but must advise the CJC in writing/email a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the show for approval. The assessor cannot be family or a close friend. The assessor must advise if the trainee is competent or needs more experience. A further assessment will be required if the trainee does not receive a competent grading.

25. All Trainee Judges and Aspiring Judges are required to support all Judges Training activities including mentoring, assistance with breed lectures and supporting other Trainee Judges with entries at Open Shows.

c.

The CJC has the right to appoint an assessor for any trainee if deemed necessary and requires more than two (2) assessments.

d.

Trainees will be expected to attend two (2) Breed Club specialty championship shows and critique five (5) dogs at each with an accredited assessor. Preferably with the Group Coordinator. Trainees must attend the entire breed show or a minimum of 50 dogs at that show. Breeds with different varieties are counted as one breed. eg Poodles.

e.

Complete fifty (50) critiques which are to be done in association with an accredited assessor and signed off by them. The CJC would prefer this to be done in association with the Group Coordinator. The critiques completed at the Breed Specialty shows can be counted towards the fifty (50) critiques.

f.

A maximum of ten (10) critiques can be completed at any one show.

g.

No more than five (5) of these ten (10) critiques may be of the same breed.

h.

It should be noted that only ten (10) critiques of a particular breed will count towards the required number of critiques for an application for your hands on exam.

30. The results of written examination papers are valid for life. The CJC reserves the right to use an alternative examination paper whenever it is deemed necessary.

i.

Trainees in remote areas who are unable to attend breed specialties can complete their critiques from photos. The photos and critiques must be forwarded to the Group or Regional Coordinator.

Practical Examination (Hands-On Exam)

23. When a judge obtains Championship status for their FIRST Group, they then must judge one (1) full Group in Queensland before they can accept appointments in the Group interstate or overseas. The judge is required to advise the CJC within two weeks of signing the contract as they may be evaluated at this show and feedback provided.

26. All Trainee Judges who are considered by the CJC to reside a distance from the normal lecture venue (the Durack Showgrounds) that would pose a travelling risk, are to study through ‘Distance Education’. a.

The Distance Education curriculum is available on the Dogs Queensland website under “Judges Training Documents”. Candidates studying through Distance Education should check regularly for any amendments.

27. Where a Trainee fails to comply with the Rules and Regulations of the Group Training Program, the CJC may recommend to the Board of Dogs Queensland that the person be removed from the Judges Panel. The CJC, in considering whether to remove a person from the Judges Panel, will consider all the facts and will provide their recommendation to the Board of Dogs Queensland. A right of appeal is available, and an appeal may be made to the Board of Dogs Queensland in writing within 14 days of the official notification of the removal. 28. If through sickness, injury or other involuntary circumstances, a Trainee Judge cannot fully satisfy any requirement of the JTP, upon application, the CJC will consider each request for dispensation on its individual merit. 29. Applications for such leave of absence must be submitted in writing to the CJC immediately the pertinent circumstances arise.

31. Application for the Practical Examination must be made on the prescribed form (available from the DQ website) and all details on this form are to be completed. This form must be received NO LATER THAN 15th JULY in any year. 32. Applications may be submitted subject to successful completion of all requirements in the Group Training Program. One (1) group per year.

JUDGES’ TRAINING RULES AND REGULATIONS 33. All candidates and assessors will sign a confidentiality agreement to ensure the secrecy of all decisions; and refrain from any communication outside of this agreement. 34. An explanation of the examination procedure will be given to the candidate prior to the examination day. Any candidate, who is unsure of the procedure on the day, has the right to ask for clarification from any member of the CJC. 35. Each candidate and assessor will receive a score sheet. Candidates are to make no markings on these score sheets until the examination commences. 36. The Hands-on examination will consist of two breed classes and one mixed breed class. Each breed class will be comprised of a different breed and consist of 5 or 6 dogs of either sex in that breed. The mixed breed class will consist of 5 or 6 dogs of different breeds and of either sex (excluding the two breeds previously used in the two breed classes, unless exceptional circumstances require the re-judging of either breed as part of the mixed class). In all classes, dogs must be over the age of 6 months. 37. The examination will be conducted by 3 accredited assessors appointed by the CJC. A fourth person, also appointed by the CJC, will act as Chairperson and Coordinator for the ring. 38. The procedure for the Hands-on Examination is as follows: a.

The 3 assessors will examine the dogs independent of the candidates and determine their placings from 1st to last.

b. Independently, each assessor will then record their own placings on the score sheet provided. c.

The candidates will then examine the dogs.

d. As per normal judging procedure, candidates will have approximately 2 minutes to examine each exhibit. e.

Each candidate will record their placings from 1st to last on the score sheet provided, without communicating their decisions to any other candidate.

f.

Each candidate will then provide their placings to all the assessors and then be interviewed and examined by all 3 assessors individually.

g.

All questions pertaining to the breeds are expected to be answered. The candidate will only be examined on the exhibits in the respective class.

18

DOG WORLD September 2021

h. Questions asked during the Hands-on Examination, may be taken from current ANKC Breed Standards. i. Assessors will record on the score sheet comments relating to each candidate. This must be completed whether passing or failing a candidate. j.

After all candidates have been examined on the two breed classes and one mixed breed class, the candidates will be excused from the examination ring.

k.

Assessors will then independently complete the assessment form, awarding a pass or fail grade to each candidate on the two breed classes and one mixed breed class, with valid written reasons.

l.

At NO time should either an examiner or candidate discuss any aspect of the practical examination outside of the official examination procedure. To do so is a breach of confidentiality comments relating to each candidate. All Papers remain confidential and the property of Dogs Queensland.

m.

A shortfall in the number of exhibits or assessors will not automatically invalidate an examination. Provided that the candidate is given an explanation and that the candidate agrees that the examination continue, the examination will not be declared null and void. No objections or protests because of these discrepancies will be considered thereafter.

n. Should the candidate elect not to proceed with the examination, NO special examination will be arranged. 39. In order to be successful at the Hands-on Examination, a candidate must receive a PASS grade by at least 2 of the 3 assessors for EACH of the 3 classes. a.

Once a candidate receives formal written notification of passing the Practical Examination, they may accept and sign contracts for any sanctioned ANKC Show in that Group and judge immediately. Subject to Regulation 23

b.

Any candidate who fails a Practical Examination must judge a further full Group with a minimum of 25 dogs. They must be assessed at this appointment by an accredited assessor appointed by the CJC and receive a competent result within that Group, before re-applying for Practical Examination.

40. If a candidate fails the Practical Examination in the same Group, for a third time, they will be removed from the Judges Training Program for a period of two years before reapplying.

Dances With Dogs – Katelyn Hirst I was first introduced to Dances with Dogs (DWD) as a little girl watching the local dog training school (VIP Training with Maree Field) performing with their demo team at the local community fair.

I quickly learned that there is so much more to DWD than merely performing complex tricks in sequences to music. Indeed, it goes beyond dressing up in eyecatching costumes, showcasing your dog’s most impressive moves in time with the music, all while reflecting the underlying themes of the song. It’s more than achieving a qualifying score to earn a title. The real value I gain from DWD is teaching, developing and enhancing my dogs’ skills, which are all relevant to everyday life. It is building the foundations for a confident dog, where no matter the environment or intensity of distractions they can thrive. It’s also about encouraging my dog to be a team player and learning that even when things don’t go as planned, it’s okay. DWD is one of the most rewarding sports to compete in. It’s challenging and takes lots of training and preparation to get into the ring. This makes a qualification even more special. I love this sport as it’s

Amie Forbes Photography

At age sixteen, I joined their training school with my shy rescue dog Mable, and quickly grew to love all aspects of dog sports, including Obedience, DWD and Trick Dog to name a few. I added my young Border Collie, Scout to training in late 2019 as a little puppy.

one of the only sports that any dog and his human can do, not restricted by breed, nor disability. Better yet you can tailor it to suit your own strengths and abilities as well as the dogs, and incorporate all their favourite tricks to make it even more fun. Performing and training for DWD has no doubt enhanced my relationship and bond with my own dogs, and this is showcased when we compete. Mable has grown from an extremely timid dog, too scared to jump in a car, to a dog who loves even the most intense environment such as the Ekka. There is always support to be found in fellow competitors and judges, who are happy to offer advice to help everyone succeed.

First Aid:

Anaphylactic,

SHOCK

Joanne Bibby – Fursafe®

Depending on the substance, a dog may experience only a mild reaction, such as itching, however there are dogs, just as with some humans, who are susceptible to a more severe response. Symptoms may compromise lung function and impact other organs such as the liver, thereby threatening their lives. Anaphylactic shock is an emergency and is to be treated by a Vet urgently. We as dog owners do not treat this condition, rather we arm ourselves with the knowledge of the signs and symptoms so we can identify it quickly and get to the Vet without delay. It may be necessary to treat various symptoms if or when they arise, for example, if the dog stops breathing, we would administer CPR without delay.

CAUSES OF ANAPHYLACTIC SHOCK

The following substances may cause an allergic reaction within your dog: • Insect sting or bite (e.g., bees, wasps, ants); • Drugs/medications; • Human foods; • Chemicals; • Dust; • Flora such as plants, nettles and seeded grasses; and/or

Shutterstock

Anaphylactic Shock is when a dog reacts negatively to a substance, for example, chemicals or medications, a substance which is either inhaled, absorbed or ingested, and that which triggers an allergic reaction or severe inflammation.

• Keep medications locked away and/or out of reach; • Be careful when you take medication that you don’t drop it on the floor – lean over a counter or bench or pick it up the moment it falls; • Keep chemicals out of reach; • Vacuum, dust and wash bedding regularly; • Identify the plants in and around your home and remove if they are toxic; • Check out where your dog is walking or what they are standing on to reduce the risk of being stung or bitten; • Talk to your Vet about other potential allergies; • Vaccinate as scheduled by your Vet.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Your dog may show some or all of the following: • Excessive itching – hives come up out of nowhere (raised welts on skin), red, inflamed skin. • Face, ears, eyes, mouth swelling.

• Your dog may have a flea allergy.

• Vomiting.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

• Abnormal drooling.

If your dog is susceptible to anaphylaxis then the best strategy is to avoid exposing your dog to triggers, such as:

28

DOG WORLD September 2021

• Weakness when moving. • Uncontrolled bowel movements.

• Having difficulty breathing, gasping for air. • Gums have turned pale. • Dog appears exhausted. • Heart rate is racing (tachycardia) but pulse is weak. • Legs feel cold. • Seizures. • Can’t be roused, unconsciousness. • Monitor heart rate as cardiac arrest may occur if left untreated.

ACTION

1. Undertake Primary Assessment a.

Check the airway for blockages or foreign objects; remove if there is. If your dog has been vomiting finger swipe or use a tongue depressor to scoop out the vomit. Keep airway open, extend neck, pull tongue forward.

b.

Check the breathing (respirations) e.g., count the rise and fall of the chest – start artificial respiration if not breathing. Is the breathing normal or shallow, fast or not breathing? Monitor all the way to the Vet!

c. Check circulation (pulse) – does your dog have a pulse? Start CPR if no pulse. 2. Locate and remove allergen. Wash away pollens or fluids. For a sting, scrape sideways – pulling out may leave some of the sting in the body. 3. If the allergen is a food, plant, chemical or medication, take a sample with you to Vet.

6. Speak soothingly and stroke to keep calm and quiet. 7. Transport to Vet. 8. Monitor breathing during transport to Vet. If you can get someone to drive you: • Sit in the back with your dog. • Monitor during transport to Vet to make sure your dog is breathing. • If your dog stops breathing, begin artificial respiration. • If your dog’s heart stops beating, begin CPR. Bianca’s Story – David Margan As a relative newcomer to the wonderful world of pedigree competitions I sometimes had trouble working out what drives the passion of the show ring. Well, in talking to 23-year-old Bianca Hickey, a 12-year member of Dogs Queensland, finally I get it. Bianca grew up with parents and a grandma who showed Great Danes. In fact, Bianca lived in a home that had 13 Great Danes, none of whom ever slept outside. She learnt to walk by holding a Danes tail. It was inevitable that pure breds, shows and competition would be her love. She started at the age of seven going over the border with her parents to events in Northern NSW where then 7-10 year old’s could compete. But as Bianca says, “I was too tiny to do Danes and besides they’re often quite naughty!”

A breeder of Shetland Sheepdogs from Western Australia, where they’re a very popular breed, suggested she could send one over to Bianca for 12 months who would help it get its title here in Queensland. And so, she met Brady and fell in love. 12 months on the breeder flew to Queensland to collect the dog but when she saw the bond that Brady and Bianca had built that idea was scuttled. At age 12, Bianca, with Brady in tow won a Best In Show; “He taught me everything, he was just such a showman, outside the ring he was goofy but as soon as he stepped inside, he was so switched on, so serious.” It was a sad day when Brady, aged 13, passed away. As a Junior Handler Bianca Hickey won a State Final

30

DOG WORLD September 2021

and was at least placed in every final she entered. She entered shows with a range of dogs as breeders encouraged her growing passion. One of the biggest influencers was a Pomeranian breeder named Sandy Barrington-Rowe, wife of Brett Abraham and owner of ‘Pomquest’, “She was the main reason I really got into competition, she was such a lovely person with not a nasty bone in her body, she was such a presence in the ring, she encouraged me and helped me learn and she was the main reason I fell in love with Pomeranians.” Sandy loved the colour purple and earlier this year at a show in Redcliffe a memoriam for Sandy was held and the day’s ribbons were all, purple; “I like to think that she’s always looking down on me, watching over me and urging me to do better.” Bianca now has a hand raised Pomeranian named, ‘Precious’, precious by name, precious by nature. “She’s a challenge in the ring but what Brady taught me I am now trying to teach her. She really is a crazy thing, she runs around with giant toys and doesn’t sleep on her bed but under it, like a doona.” But Precious has done well, a frequent runner up in groups and a host of Best in Breed titles. Bianca didn’t find the transition from junior to senior handler easy; “I was just 13 and tiny, everyone else was at least 17 or 18, experienced and giants by comparison, initially it was all a bit intimidating.” But she wasn’t deterred and channelled Brady, Sandy and found great support in mentor, Kirri Jacobson; “Of course you get disappointed when things don’t go well but you can’t get down, you focus on learning. It’s all about persistence and perseverance.” And the secrets of her success?

• Transcervical insemination with fresh, chilled and frozen semen. • Semen collection and freezing. • In-house progesterone testing - results in 20 minutes. • Dog and bitch fertility assessment and much more.

Different dog behaviours – Petcover Australia Have you ever scratched your head in confusion or wonderment at your dog’s wacky behaviour? I’m sure most dog owners have at some point pondered why on earth their pet engages in behaviour that seems completely nonsensical to us. From chasing their tail, sniffing other dog’s butts to slobbering you in kisses and howling at the doorbell, Petcover have demystified some common canine behaviours that are both humorous and bizarre. CHASING THEIR TAIL There are a few possible reasons why a dog chases their own tail. A dog may just find the dangling appendage on their backside curious and chase it to amuse themselves or out of boredom. If this is the case then most dogs will easily be distracted from tail chasing by an alluring toy or attention from their owners. But if you notice your dog is constantly chasing its tail, it may be an obsessive compulsive trait or your dog may have fleas and is attempting to bite at them. If you think your dog’s tailing chasing is excessive than it may be time to call on a vet or behaviourist.

COCKING THEIR HEAD Dogs are very alert and attentive animals and if you’ve noticed your dog tilt their head while you speak you may assume this is your pet responding with a quizzical gesture as they attempt to decipher what you’ve just said. This is not far from the truth! While dogs may not have the capability to understand exactly what you’ve said, they do become familiar with certain words and phrases. I’m sure you’ve noticed your dog perk up when they hear the magic word W-A-L-K! Dogs cock their head to open the ear canal which helps them locate the source of a sound and listen out for familiar words or phrases. STICKING OUT THEIR TONGUE

So next time your dog sniffs another dog’s butt you should applaud its curiosity and interest in learning about the world and others!

32

DOG WORLD September 2021

Pexels

SNIFFS OTHER DOG’S BUTTS Among the social faux pas our dogs commit, sniffing other dog’s butts is one of the most cringe worthy (just after eating poop and humping other dogs). But while we might turn up our noses in disgust, this behaviour is actually completely normal for dogs. Their keen sense of smell is far superior to humans and is used to gather information about their environment. And a dog’s anus happens to have important glands which secrete chemicals that tell them everything they need to know about their friend. A fellow dog’s gender, health, diet and emotions can all be picked up by a sniff of the rear. For some dogs sticking out the tip of their tongue is a sign of relaxation. A dog’s tongue is also used to cool the body down. If your dog has just done some laps of

the park, their open mouthed panting is a way to create moisture which evaporates and cools the tongue. As the tongue cools, the blood flow is cooled which cools the entire body through the respiratory system.

Pixabay

However, as adorable as it looks if you notice your dog’s tongue sticking out all the time, they may have Hanging Tongue Syndrome (yes it is a thing!). Smaller breeds of dogs are usually more prone to Hanging Tongue Syndrome due to the tongue being too large for the oral cavity, having an abnormally shaped jaw structure that doesn’t support the tongue or having an overbite or underbite. While Hanging Tongue Syndrome isn’t a serious health concern it can become an issue as the tongue being constantly exposed can cause a bacterial infection or can get dry and cracked from lack of moisture. Take your tongue-wagging dog to a vet if you notice any changes in the tongue’s colour or texture or if you notice swelling or bleeding.

HOWLS While the howl might sound sombre, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s rarely in response to pain or sadness. In fact, it has its roots in their ancestral history, as howling was used to communicate to dogs located far away. So when your dog howls at the doorbell they are likely interpreting the sound to be a fellow dog’s howl in the distance and are signalling their presence in response. If you find yourself embarrassed, amused or just plain confused by your dog’s behaviour it’s worth reminding yourself that your canine buddy is wired differently to you. Many odd behaviours are leftover traits from the dog’s ancestral past or they are using their sense organs to communicate and interpret the world around them. Celebrate species diversity by championing your dog’s weird and wacky ways!

LICKS YOU Whether you love it or hate it, most dogs can’t resist licking their owner’s face. Why? Licking is a sign of affection and a way of getting your attention. Research suggests that this behaviour may also be instinctual in dogs who are licked by their mothers as puppies and so naturally continue this behaviour in adulthood.
