The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for June 2016 By now most members would have seen that the Dog World has gone digital! This is a great step forward for our organisation, which will help in getting the publication out to members in a more timely manner, whilst saving Dogs Queensland on costs. Member Petitions and changes to the Corporations Law Currently our constitution states that the Secretary must call a Special General Meeting (SGM) upon: (1) Being directed to call the meeting by the Board; or (2) Being given written request signed by one hundred (100) members of the CCCQ Ltd. Recently, the Corporations Act of 2001 has had amendments to sections 249D and 249F which relate to the calling of meetings by members. The Corporations Act states that in order for members to call a general meeting, the written request must be signed by at least 5% of the members of the CCCQ Ltd. Whilst the Corporations Act allows for certain rules to be replaceable, ie what we can deal with in our Constitution other than what is in the Act, the sections relating to members calling a meeting are not replaceable. Based on the legal advice we have obtained, the bottom line is that the provisions of section 249D and 249F apply and the amount of members required to call a Special General Meeting is 5% of the membership, irrespective of what is in our Constitution. Members' Forum On the 22nd of May 2016, our third Members forum was held at Durack. The forum was attended by approximately 30 people, including the 6 Directors who attended. A summary of the forum will be released to members in due course. Overall, the forum was constructive and well received. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended. Your ongoing feedback and consultation is greatly appreciated.

The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
Rules Review The Constitution and Rules Reform Committee presented the draft revised Rules to the Board at our last meeting. The Board agreed that the draft Rules be released to members for consultation and feedback. Members are encouraged to read the draft rules and forward any feedback to the office via the online feedback form for consideration. The consultation period will remain open until Friday 15th July. Dog of the Year Dog of the Year will return to Durack in 2016! A survey of the 2015 event attendees was conducted by the office, with the results showing that 58% of members wanted our most prestigious event conducted at Durack. As such, the Dog of the Year Committee have advised that Durack will be the venue for 2016. Dog Lovers Show On behalf of the Board, Natalie Stewart of the Dogs Queensland Office attended the recent Dog Lovers Show in Melbourne at the end of May on a fact finding mission. The Show is a massive 3 day event and provides endless promotional opportunities to participants. The Company who runs the event has expressed the desire to work with Dogs Queensland, as they do with Dogs Victoria in Melbourne and Dogs NSW in Sydney and put together a Show in Brisbane in late 2017. This is a fantastic opportunity for all of us to promote our hobby to a National public audience. As soon as more details are known, I will let you know. Shane Thomas President

RULE 130
Zone 2 and Zone 3 Open Show Judges
All Clubs are reminded of the provisions of Rule 130 that states;
After receiving positive feedback from the Judges involved in the scheme, it was agreed that once again Clubs in Zone 1 would be offered reimbursement of the airfares to contract one of the Open Show Judges resident in Zone 2/3 for 2016/17. It is hoped that this would assist all Judges in our Northern areas. Each Club is offered the reimbursement for one Judge for the year; all fares would have to be approved by the office prior to booking.
Dogs Queensland Office Parking From Constance Street, turn right from the road into the driveway and the '10 Minute' parking bay immediately to the left is for use by all four offices in the complex and this is usually empty. If it is not available, please proceed directly under the building, straight ahead and park just by the back wall to the right next to the two garage doors, which are Dogs Queensland's property. If the business you wish to conduct is expected to take any longer than 10 minutes, please make an appointment with a Staff Member or Management, but please try to give us 24 hours notice so we can make arrangements and GUARANTEE you a car park space. During your visit, please be considerate to all other business owners within the complex at all times. Additionally, in relation to Disabled Access, it is the objective of Dogs Queensland to make access to our services easily available to all our members. If any member has difficulty walking up the stairs, they are encouraged to park their car and make their way to the bottom of the first stairway, where an intercom system is installed on the side of the wall. Please press the button and someone will answer you and service your needs, generally by coming down to greet you personally and handle any transaction that is required.
Show and Trial Dates All Clubs holding any Shows or Trials in 2017 are reminded that all requests for alterations are required to be submitted to the Dogs Queensland Office no later than 30th June 2016.
Correction To May President’s Message In the President’s Message last month, it was mentioned that the Gladstone Kennel Club organised the Drought Relief Shows, but this was in fact a Drought Relief Support Committee composed of members from the Central Queensland region.

130. Show Secretaries are to provide each Judge who is contracted to judge at a Show with a list of breeds to be judged at that Show and the number of dogs entered in each breed. (Breed lists must be compiled prior to entries being forwarded to the cataloguer). Such lists must be received by the Judge at least seven (7) working days prior to the exhibition. The judge is not to be provided with a catalogue until completion of judging.
ANKC News Please note that the relevant document on the Dogs Queensland / ANKC Website has been amended where applicable; AMENDMENT TO UK BREED STANDARD - GREAT DANE As a result of a change by the Kennel Club of UK the Great Dane breed standard will be amended as follows: ‘HEAD AND SKULL’ CURRENTLY READS: Head And Skull: Head, taken altogether, gives idea of great length and strength of jaw. Muzzle or foreface broad, skull proportionately narrow, so that whole head when viewed from above and in front, has appearance of equal breadth throughout. Length of head in proportion to height of dog. Length from nose to point between eyes about equal or preferably of greater length than from this point to back of occiput. Skull flat, slight indentation running up centre, occipital peak not prominent. Decided rise or brow over the eyes but not abrupt stop between them; face well chiselled, well filled in below eyes with no appearance of being pinched: foreface long, of equal depth throughout. Cheeks showing as little lumpiness as possible, compatible with strength. Underline of head, viewed in profile, runs almost in a straight line from corner of lip to corner of jawbone, allowing for fold of lip, but with no loose skin hanging down. Bridge of nose very wide, with slight ridge where cartilage joins bone (this is a characteristic of breed). Nostrils large, wide and open, giving blunt look to nose. Lips hang squarely in front, forming right-angle with upper line of foreface. ‘HEAD AND SKULL’ AMENDED TO READ: Head, taken altogether, gives idea of great length and strength of jaw. AMENDMENT TO FCI BREED STANDARD - CANE CORSO As a result of advice received from the FCI the breed standard for the Cane Corso on the ANKC Ltd website will be amended. FCI has further clarified that due to the number of changes to this standard they consider it to be a new standard. AMENDMENT TO FCI BREED STANDARD – ROTTWEILER
This involves amendment to the last paragraph of Clause 3.2 of Regulations Part 6 which currently reads: “The imported dog must be re-registered by the ANKC Ltd State Member Body in which the registered owner resides. (Amended 10/07, 7.6) (Amended EAP 03/13) (Amended 10/15, 6.1)” Should have been amended to read: “The imported dog must be transferred to the new owner’s name in the country of residence prior to export and re-registered by the ANKC Ltd State Member Body in which the owner resides.”
As a result of advice received from the National Rottweiler Council (Australia) the breed standard for the Rottweiler on the ANKC Ltd website will be amended to reflect the 2000 version. The National Rottweiler Council (Australia) has been requested to review the existing Breed Standard Extension to ensure it reflects the updated breed standard.

Steadiness: The Basis of All Gundog Work By Joe Law
Steadiness in a gundog is a vital component, not just in his genetic makeup but also in the way in which he is trained. In the Rules for the Conduct of Retrieving Trials for Gundogs it states: 'The function of a retriever is to seek fallen game when ordered to do so. It should sit quietly in the hide, walk at heel, or assume any station designated by the handler until sent to retrieve. When ordered to do so, a dog should retrieve quickly and briskly without unduly disturbing too much ground.'
Teaching your dog to be steady begins early and is a simple extension of a stay command. Begin with the dog beside you on lead and on a sit, give the stay command and then have someone throw a dummy. If the dog attempts to break, it won’t get far as it is on lead. Put it back into the sit position and then when the dog is sitting calmly, send the dog for the retrieve. Repeat this process several times over a few days and you should start to see your dog waiting for the command to retrieve. Next you can repeat the exercises but with the dog heeling beside you. Don’t rush to off lead work, because if the dog gets the reward of getting the retrieve, it has just been rewarded for breaking. When you think you are ready for off lead work, instruct your thrower assistant to be prepared to pick up the dummy if the dog breaks. Next will be training steadiness to the flush – and again it is preferable that the dog is on lead just to make sure that chasing of the game does not reward the dog. Using a dummy launcher or having a dummy thrown by an assistant can simulate game being flushed. When the dummy is cast, give your stop command, preferably using a whistle - if the dog stops, reward with lavish praise. When the dog is listening to the whistle you can move to off lead work. Please remember a dog is not a machine and it is very exciting when game is cast and this can trigger a natural chase response from your dog. It’s your job to clearly show the dog that chasing is not allowed. As steadiness is part training and part genetics, both breeders and trainers of gundogs should realise the importance of steadiness and have it as an objective in their programs.
Interested in Retrieving Trials? Contacts: Field and Retrieving Association for Gundogs Inc. Geoff Dawson: geoff.jan.dawson@bigpond.com.au Ph: (07) 3886 6367, Burpengary
Steadiness means the dog does not move, nor make a sound when the game is shot at and does not move nor make a sound when the game falls. This will not need repeated commands from the handler; in fact a great gundog needs no command at all to be steady!! For those competing in Gundog Trials where multiple articles may be cast, it is very important that the dog remains steady while concentrating on the fall and only retrieves the articles in the correct order when sent by the handler.

Rally-O Sub-Committee Rally-O Hints and Tips Moving Stands We now have THREE different signs worded 'Moving Stand'. One is in Novice, one is in Excellent and one is in Masters.
Set all three of these signs up when you practice, so that you become really familiar with them and can recognise them easily on the walk through. If you aren’t in the higher levels yet, you can still start practicing at home. These distance control exercises aren’t only in Rally-O but will help with your Obedience work and are also very useful control toolsdes for you and your dog.
Queensland to Host 2017 National Obedience and Rally-O Trials It seems not long since the razzle dazzle of the 2015 State and National Obedience and Rally-O Trials, but Queensland has won the opportunity to host the Nationals again for 2017. So it’s time NOW to get started with planning and training.
N, A, X, M - #32
The BIG weekend will be in 2017. We will be holding a variety of competitions including:
X, M - #49
M - #56 The Excellent sign #49 'Moving Stand- Walk around Dog' isn’t new – it was in the original Rules. This is similar to the UDX Position in Motion where you give the command to stand and then keep walking – in Rally you walk around the dog – and you must pause when you return and before moving off (note: we now also have #57 'Moving Down – Walk Around' and #58 'Moving Sit – Walk Around' in Masters which are the same technique). The new Novice sign #32 'Moving Stand' is similar to Stand your Dog in Obedience. You must give the command and/or signal while you are still moving. If your dog doesn’t stand on the first command you must Retry the exercise. If you come to a halt and then stand your dog – you are no longer 'moving' and you will score IP. This exercise is similar to the original #27 'Moving Down'. The Masters sign #56 'Moving Stand – Leave Dog – Distance Down' is a different one altogether. Get in the habit of calling this one '#56 No Pause!' This one is also similar to UDX Position in Motion where you give the command to stand and then keep walking – there will be a marker at the 3m line and when you cross that line, turn, halt and then drop your dog. When you return to your dog, again no pause, just continue on and heel up your dog. With this station, when you return, you don't have to cut in close around the dog's tail - you can walk past the dog a metre or so and when you turn it will line you up so you have a nice straight line back to the heel position and you can adjust your footwork if necessary so you heel off nicely on the left foot.

State Obedience Trial State Rally-O Trial National Obedience Trial National Rally-O Trial State Dances with Dogs competition State Agility / Jumpers
Competitors will have the opportunity to compete under interstate as well as local Judges and we hope that a large contingent of interstate competitors will cross the border and enjoy the hospitality of the Maroons! Ipswich Dog Obedience Club is again planning a mid-week competition in the following week, providing extra incentive for our interstate visitors to make the trip. Apart from the opportunity to compete, the co-hosting of a variety of disciplines, all on the Durack grounds, provides the opportunity for competitors and the public alike to view the wide range of skills and the enjoyment (and occasional stress) of our triallers and their dogs. The relevant State Committees will be undertaking a good deal of fundraising ahead of these Trials and we will be seeking major sponsors to provide even greater rewards for our competitors – though of course the best reward of all is the treasured qualifying card. So note those dates in your diaries and start your planning now.

They enjoy moving stock around from place to place and it is an activity that creates a very special bond between handler and dog. When the lightbulb goes on for the dog, it is a very special moment – hundreds of years of instinct and original purpose have come to light! The ANKC Herding Program was developed to preserve the traditional style and herding instinct of the Herding Breeds. Working style differs from breed to breed and also within breeds. Different styles of work developed in response to local situations and needs. For instance, many of the European breeds work the furrow lines left by the plough to contain sheep within a graze area. This is very different to how the Kelpie or Border Collies work, but it is just as important to retain the original purpose for all breeds.
Today there is an increased interest in herding from many breeders of pure bred dogs and from individuals. These people are not usually involved in the livestock industry, but are interested in working with dogs, either just to have fun and develop the relationship between owner and dog, or to help preserve the particular talent and ability of their chosen breed. Competitive Herding Trials have been increasing in number and variety. Stock used is normally sheep, but can also be ducks or cattle. The stock is ALWAYS ‘dog broke’, which means that sheep, ducks, or cattle are used to being worked by a variety of different breeds of dogs. If you have a cross breed or a dog without papers, the dog can go on the Associate Register. For this Register, they must be desexed. If your dog is a mixture of Herding Breeds, i.e. Border Collie / Cattle Dog, it can go on the Associate Register Herding (ARH). You will need to include an assessment form signed by your Herding Instructor and your dog will also need to be desexed. There is also a Sporting Register for dogs already registered with another Association such as the Working Kelpie Council.

Herding is one dog sport where initially the dog will know far more than the handler. It can be very humbling watching your dog take charge and you not really knowing what is going on. The learning curve for the handler can be very steep and very, very challenging. No two sessions will ever be the same as the livestock will react differently each and every time. Time and patience are needed to move forward in herding. It is a true partnership as the handler must learn to trust their dog.
The Belgian Shepherd Dog Laekenois Ch Vanrusselhof Aaron (AI) HSCs ANKC Herding is divided into 6 levels, the first 3 levels are ‘Test classes’. HIC, HT and PT. The Herding Instinct Certificate is the first step in the Herding journey and is a prerequisite for the two other test levels. Once a PT (Pre Trial level) has been awarded, a dog may then compete at Trial level.
The ANKC herding program was developed to preserve the traditional style and herding instinct of the herding breeds. There are 3 Trial courses; A, B and C. Each of these Courses is meant to represent the work traditionally done by the many different breeds eligible for ANKC Herding. Handlers can choose to compete on any course offered by the Trial holding Club. There are two Herding Clubs in Queensland, training is held on a regular basis and both Clubs ran Trials throughout the Herding season. Of Misty Mornings Tr a c k i n g Dogs
Before dawn, when the crisp chill of frost entices competitors and friends alike to remain bundled up in sleeping bags, the camp takes a breath and the Tracking Trial comes to life. Dogs bark and tails thump inside trailers or crates in readiness for what is to come. At the front gate, as the first warm glow of morning appears in the sky, the rest of the cohort begins to arrive. Written by Deb Sunners s the two groups merge, the Trial Manager goes through the mandatory property and safety briefings and handlers have their gear approved by their Judge. Stewards now usher the first tracklayers from camp to walk their pre-determined routes. They will follow the flags set out yesterday to mark where the scent line will be. Handlers due to go out later in the morning are queuing for hot beverages as the first competitors start. Within half an hour, there are cheers as successful competitors start returning to camp. This is interspersed with the occasional self-admonishment... ”I should have trusted my dog!”, or disbelief

“I can’t believe he rolled in that”, or “she got the start and the finish okay, it was just the bit in between that went pear shaped!”There are lots of tales shared. The best are those where handler and dog were totally connected. All corners were taken on line, diversion tracks were ignored, articles well indicated and the tracklayer was found. No amount of chill, rain or early starts will ever dampen the thrill of doing an 'Excellent' track. When all dogs have worked and breakfast is over, the Judges provide their precis of the morning’s tracks. This overview of how the dog and handler team worked is greeted with applause and congratulations for the passes, while those not so successful are

On occasions handlers will fail their dogs. Every person who has ever dropped the tracking lead, or let go of the dog before attaching the lead securely to the harness, can clearly remember that moment of panic and despair as the dog leaves without them, only to do the perfect track. Unfortunately, without handler, that is a Fail. Handlers generally only do this once in their lifetime. More than that and their friends will never let them live it down. Even when things are going well, it pays to expect the unexpected.
Distant tracklayer is monitored by the Steward encouraged and supported. Everyone knows there are ups and downs in Tracking, and the ups are incredibly rewarding when they happen. From the Judge and handler’s point of view, the dog only has to follow the tracklayer’s scent from start to finish, plus find the articles along the way. Only one person has walked this route. Changes of direction (turns/ corners) still have the same scent to follow. At the higher levels, diversion tracks are set. These are scent lines walked across the track by someone other than the tracklayer, as an exercise in discrimination for the dog. In theory, with what we know about a dog’s olfactory system, the dog should have no problem following the correct scent. Just ask any handler whose dog has successfully followed an old practice track from days before.
There have been occasions when a hot dog has taken an abrupt detour into an adjacent water hole to cool off. Before the handler can react, it is already shoulder deep in cool water and refusing to budge. Few handlers will wade into knee deep water and mud mid-track. Pulling on the lead risks drowning the animal, so there we have a Mexican standoff. Generally, the Judge will give up first. Then it’s up to handler and dog to debate the pros and cons of being covered in filthy, stinking mud for the rest of the day. Typically, the handler remains clean and dry and the dog comes out when it’s ready.
Tracey Knox’s Hattie in high drive From the dog’s point of view, its job is to follow the tracklayer’s scent from start to finish... but wait! A rabbit ran past this spot exactly 53.27 minutes ago, from right to left and into those bushes! I will investigate. Oh no, there are cows! What do I do, what do I do? I can smell an article! It’s somewhere over on the right. Yes, there it is... QUAIL! Oh boy, oh boy, there are quail... What? The Judge has called us off? But I haven’t got to the quail yet! Bummer.

By the time they reach T&S tests 5 and beyond, each dog and handler pair is a working unit functioning as a team. Handlers have had time to learn how their dog works; how it indicates the line or articles; what signals it gives when on-track or off, etc. Dogs have learnt that every city block has at least a dozen cats. They also understand that they know more about scent than their handler! The smart handler learns the latter fast.
Carmel Vierow and Trinity Dogs that have attained their Tracking Champion Title then move into Track & Search. Here the first two levels are a transition from rural to urban work, although there are no fewer distractions. That is, cattle and quail are now replaced by cats, scrub turkeys, barking dogs, vehicular traffic and humans – on bikes, skateboards, wanting to pat the working dog, walking into the hide as the dog approaches to ask what the tracklayer is doing and so on.
We never come away from a Trial without having observed at least one dog doing something that we consider truly amazing. At the University of Queensland’s St. Lucia campus where mid-level tracks are run, the dogs learn to contend with crowds of students in and around buildings. They negotiate stairs, the occasional corridor through buildings and boardwalks across the lakes. They can accurately detect a 3 - 4 hour old scent trail beneath heavy pedestrian traffic and wildlife contamination.
We frequently see a dog working with head down, only to stick its nose in the air and immediately change direction (correcting itself). Or, the tracklayer may have walked a scent line down the left hand footpath, but when the dog starts some hours later, it clearly shows the scent to be on the right. Traffic and weather conditions change and swirl the scent. The breeze has carried it across to the other side of the road. So we cannot rely on maps, or what our human logic is trying to tell us. The dogs know a whole lot more than we ever will. Once dogs reach the highest levels, the T&S tests 9 and 10, they are following not only tracklayer scent from footsteps, but they are also following the motor vehicle that the tracklayer climbed into hours earlier for some 200m (with changes of direction around suburban streets) and successfully picking up the scent once more where the tracklayer alighted from that vehicle. We never come away from a Trial without having observed at least one dog doing something that we consider truly amazing. To the dog it is perfectly natural. The sport of Tracking is not like the other dog sports. There are no placegetters. Each dog works a unique track. It succeeds on its own merits and through the relationship it has with its handler. To understand how amazing these animals truly are, try tracking them, it’s a lot of fun and very educational. First Australian Lure Coursing Titles Awarded Supplied by Ann Glynn 2015 was the first year that Lure Coursing became an official ANKC sport with the ability to compete officially and gain Titles. rimarily for sighthounds, Lure Coursing recreates conditions to test the dog’s inherent coursing skills as it would pursue game in the field. The lure consists of strips of plastic bag tied to a continuous loop of cord. The cord is attached to pulleys and the speed of the lure is dictated by the Lure Operator. The layout of the course changes at each Trial and a normal course is between 600 and 900 metres long. Each dog has two runs at each meet and points are scored according to the following criteria; enthusiasm, follow, speed, agility and endurance.
24 - June 2016
Whilst sighthounds are magnificent to watch with their speed, grace and athleticism, all other breeds may also take part. Titles for sighthounds are different from those for other dogs, more complex and competitive, however, many breeds compete on the field at Durack and whatever their original primary use, they certainly have fun in pursuit of the lure. In May, the first two Lure Coursing Titles in Australia were attained; both in the Coursing Ability category and both Cocker Spaniels; Watervaal Flamekeeper (Pip), thank you Gwen Hansen (breeder of my superdog!) and Manunga Flame N Fortune
bred and owned by Alecia Ugrinic but living on the couch of Nic Mather. The Queensland Sighthound Association runs a Trial in most months of the year and the American Staffordshire Terrier Club have run one very successful Trial and plan further events this year. Far Northern Obedience Powerhouse Supplied by Andrea Wohlhuter Far Northern Club, Cairns City Kennel Club, is going from strength to strength. Obedience, normally losing out to Agility on popularity, is creating a real stronghold in Zone 3. Top competitor and head instructor, Andrea Wohlhuter and her Belgian Malinois, Shelby (Belgenbeau Dragon Heart CDX RAE, AD, JD, GD, SPD) have landed a coup that has been unequalled in this area. Andrea and Shelby started off the Trialling season at the end of March with a double perfect score of 200 in CDX (judges Mal Holland and Judy ForbesFaulkner). A first for any handler at the Club. Within 5 weeks of competition, the team achieved the required 6 qualifications in CDX over 190 points to be eligible for a 'Golden Dumbbell' award and added a third perfect 200 in CDX under Judge, Barbara Murfet. The high standard of training and competition amongst Cairns handlers is evident by the depth of the field.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Zone 2 Dog World Column – June 2016 ell, here we are, approaching the middle of the year already. This becomes a very busy time in the regional areas as the milder weather (we hope) is upon us and there are a lot of events scheduled during this time.
What’s On in Zone 2 in June? In June, Zone 2 members have a choice of several events to participate in, including: • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Emerald Ag Society Champ Show (Emerald) – 1st June Isis District Canine Club Champ Shows (Bundaberg) – 4th and 5th June Magpies Mackay Obedience Club Tracking (Mackay) – 4th and 5th June Rockhampton Dog Obedience Club Double Obedience, Agility, Jumpers and Games and Double Rally-O (Rockhampton) - 11th and 12th June Wide Bay Working Gundog Club Retrieving Trial For Gundogs (Bundaberg) – 11th, 12th and 13th June Rockhampton Ag Society Champ Show (Rockhampton) – 16th June Mackay Kennel Club Champ Show (Mackay) – 18th June Magpies Mackay Obedience Club Double Obedience and Double Rally-O (Mackay) – 18th June Pioneer Valley Ag Society Champ Show (Finch Hatton) – 19th June Magpies Mackay Obedience Club Endurance (Mackay) – 19th June Mt Larcom Show Society Champ Show (Mt Larcom) – 25th June Magpies Mackay Obedience Club Agility, Jumpers and Snooker (Mackay) – 25th June Gympie and District Kennel Club Champ and Open Shows (Maryborough) – 25th and 26th June
There is a big specialty weekend in Brisbane on 11th and 12th June, and a lot of Zone 2 members will be travelling down to these events to compete. I wish everyone safe travels and good luck for these events and please remember to book your camping spot!
Durack – Camping With the final approval for the camping permit received permitting not only tent camping, but also accommodation for motorhomes, caravans and other mobile transport, Zone 2 members now have greater options and ability to support shows at Durack. For some, the importance of this improvement may not be apparent, but for regional members who already incur significant costs to travel to events in Brisbane, the option of being able to stay on the grounds in mobile accommodation, make use of the facilities available and all at a reasonable price cannot be understated. This is a very positive step to not only meet the needs of exhibitors travelling to the grounds, but also introduces a small, but important income stream that can be used to contribute to the significant costs of maintaining the Durack facility. It is also important that members understand their mutual obligations of utilising this service at the grounds by ensuring that they book and pay for sites and follow the requirements of the camping policy which is available on the Dogs Queensland website.
Show Workers I know this is a fairly common theme in this column, but it is a very important one. We have a great Show community in Zone 2, but need to be aware that more volunteers are required as Show Workers – Show Managers, Stewards and Writers to ensure the hobby is sustainable and enjoyable for all. At every Show, it seems to be the same people who are always working, often to the detriment of their own dogs, so that there are Stewards and Writers at the rings. I’m sure we are all very grateful for their service but they are getting burned out and we need more support from our members. Please put yourself forward to help at Shows – generally, the commitment is only an hour or less and it’s a great way to socialise with other exhibitors, watch the judging of dogs and contribute to the dog world. The roles are quite easy and training and support is available to assist you. If we don’t get more workers, we are at risk of either not having shows, judging suspended while we wait for workers to become available or having surcharges added to entries so that dedicated workers can be arranged to fulfil the required roles.

Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Our Show Workers generally provide their time voluntarily, so please make sure at all times that we make their job as easy as possible.
Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers Meeting Zone 2 members may not be aware that there is an annual meeting of Club Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers held in Brisbane – usually in July. Even though the meeting is held in Brisbane, Club officials from regional areas are more than welcome to attend if they are available or can submit items for the agenda. These meetings are about discussion between the Clubs and Dogs Queensland looking at ways that interactions and services can be improved and to discuss and investigate any issues that may have occurred throughout the year. Please keep your eye out for notices about this meeting and submission deadlines and discuss with your local Club Committee if there are any items you would like to submit.

THREE
REASONS WHY YOUR DOG ISN’T RESPONDING:
PART 1 SUPPLIED BY ERIC BRAD ake a walk through any park and it won’t be long before you encounter someone who is struggling with their dog. It sometimes seems that dogs just don’t want to listen to us when we give them cues (sometimes called 'commands') to 'Come' or 'Sit.' In fact, it often seems worse when we’re out in public than when we’re around the house.
Considering how long dogs have been with humans and how much we interact with our dogs every day, it’s amazing how little most of us know about how dogs see and hear. We have enough miscommunication between humans with similar eyes and ears, so it shouldn’t be surprising that miscommunication can happen MORE frequently when more than one species with different sensory organs is involved.
As we pass these dog owners, we can often hear them say things like, “Oh, he is such a defiant dog,” or “She’s just in a mood today; I think she’s still mad at not going for a ride with us yesterday.”
So, what is the first reason a dog might not respond to our cue? The dog didn’t hear/see/understand the cue. Dogs can be very literal creatures. It’s important that we be consistent when giving cues so that they learn through repetition to recognise our verbal and visual cues. Let’s not forget that our four-footed partners are working with different sensory organs than we have and don’t perceive the world the same way we do and that different situations and environments can distract from or obscure our cues to our dogs. Is the dog looking at us to see a visual cue or is it in a position to hear us clearly when we offer a verbal cue?
Animal behaviourists would disagree with both of those reasons. There are three good reasons why your dog doesn’t respond when you give him a cue to do something. On any given day, your dog could appear disobedient for any or all of those reasons. The important thing is to take responsibility for the dog’s failure to offer the correct behaviour. After all, we are the humans in the relationship and we have the bigger brain. We owe it to our dogs to stop and take an honest look at the situation to find what it is that we can do to make things better. In the next instalments, we will look at good reasons – some biological, some behavioural – for dogs to continue doing what they do and not respond to requests despite our confusion, frustration and annoyance. The good news is, there are things we can do to improve their response to us. And it’s not that hard at all. The first reason your dog may not be responding as you would like is amazingly simple. It comes down to communication. It also comes down to a common misunderstanding about how dogs perceive the world.
30 - June 2016
Dogs see motion better than they see detail. Dogs are descended from wolves and have the eye sight of a predator species. Their eyes are designed to spot a running rabbit or deer at a distance and be able to then target the prey just enough to run it down. This is a very different design from the human eye. Dogs don’t need to know details about their prey, just the direction in which the prey is running. So when you signal, movement is more important than details. If you are going to point at something, moving your hand from your side in a sweep toward an object is more meaningful than the dog just seeing your arm stretched out and not moving.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
Remember that dogs will pay more attention to more mobile objects than less mobile ones. So, if you move your hand slightly to signal your dog and you are walking at the same time, your dog has to decide what to pay attention to – the relatively small movement of your hand or the movement and direction of your entire body. You could inadvertently be overshadowing your cue with unintended distracting movements. Dogs hear in a frequency range higher than humans. That means that, just like us, they have trouble hearing in the extreme upper and lower ends of their hearing range. Unfortunately, the human voice, especially the male voice, falls in the lower end of a dog’s hearing range. It is difficult for humans to precisely locate the source of low frequencies and it stands to reason that this is true for dogs as well so it may be difficult for your dog to know where you are exactly, let alone what cue you are giving.
Dogs approach the world 'nose first'. A dog’s sense of smell is arguably the most important sense in how it perceives the world. And there is competition in the auditory world as well. Our modern world offers a host of sounds which can mask or block the sound of our cues: traffic, bushes, wind, construction, people talking, and even the barking of other dogs. Our dog’s ears are not fixed like human ears; they can pivot to focus on sound. It may be that those amazing ears are turned toward something other than you when you give your verbal cue making it difficult for them to notice. So we need to make sure that cues are not just clearly and loudly spoken but timed so the dog is least bothered by audible distractions and can focus on them. Dogs approach the world 'nose first'. A dog’s sense of smell is arguably the most important sense in how it perceives the world. For humans, sight is our primary sense. For dogs, it’s scent — the overwhelming number of nerves devoted to the dogs sense of smell (10 – 100 times more nerve cells than a human nose) not only allows a dog to perceive smells beyond our capabilities, they also sense complexities and information in those smells that we cannot understand. Just as a visually stimulating object can be distracting to a human, an interesting or novel smell can be powerfully distracting to a dog while remaining completely undetectable by us. Consider how being so close to the ground brings interesting smells that much closer to those amazing noses — no wonder they can be so distracted! If your dog’s nose is to the ground when you give your cue or turned into the breeze, it’s possible they are caught up in the most interesting and wonderful smell and didn’t get the message.

Continued from page 31 Getting It Right. Then there is the matter of consistency. Did you move your hand in the same way you trained your dog to recognise? Did you say the right word? Did you use the same pitch and tone of voice? Dogs are not great at generalising information — they are very literal minded. To expect them to understand a wide range of variations in our voice (or our hand and body movements) without exposure or training may be asking too much. As good trainers, we need to develop good habits so that we are sending the same cues as clearly and consistently as we can, every time. Be sure you have your dog’s attention. Many times we unconsciously throw out a cue without confirming that the dog is focused on and receptive to us. We only see that they didn’t respond and we assume that they got the cue and just chose not to respond. Could they see you? Were they looking at you? Did you choose a noisy moment to offer that verbal cue? Was their nose glued to some bush when you gave the cue? The lesson here is that your dog is not 'defiant' or 'just in a mood.' There are legitimate reasons why your dog did not respond to your cue. Not getting the message clearly is one of them. Set yourself and your dog up for success by being good communicators and timing your cues when your dog is best able to use their amazing senses to perceive them correctly. In part 2 and part 3 of this series, we’ll examine some other reasons your dog may not be as attentive as you would like — and what you can do about it. The thing to keep in mind here is that we have the greater intellect in the relationship with our dogs. We owe it to them to expect the best and give them every opportunity to be successful in their relations with us. Until next time, let’s be clear communicators with our four-footed friends! MAX the STAGE
STAR! Written by Helen Bright The Empire Theatre in Toowoomba called for auditions for the roles of Bruiser (Chihuahua) and Rufus the bulldog. Six Chihuahuas auditioned and Max got the part. I thought he ruined his chances when he relieved himself on the director’s shoe at the audition. However his personality shone through, and he was everyone’s favourite. To see this little dog walk on stage by himself with the cast, all the singing, dancing and music, not to mention the weird lighting was amazing. The Club, no doubt encouraged by this effort, (ambitiously) ordered 100 copies of the Novice Class Trial regulations shortly afterwards. At the 2015 presentation night, 31 trophies were awarded for Titles in Obedience, Agility, Tracking, Rally Obedience, Endurance, and Dances With Dogs. In August 1967, members travelled to Brisbane to take part in the Obedience Display at the Brisbane Exhibition. Toowoomba’s first official Obedience Trial was conducted on September 24th 1967. Judges were Mr I Lock and Mr AW Halton. There were 32 entries being 3 UD, 11 Open and 18 Novice. Taking 1st place in Novice was Dobermann, Ch Delderland Black Indras, owned by A E Locke, and taking 1st place in Open and UD was German Shepherd Dog, Donaine Bragelonne UD, owned by Norm Claridge. July 1969 saw the introduction of the first Club uniform. This consisted of white blouses/shirts, navy blue skirts/trousers and to complete the outfit, sky blue berets.

National Agility Challenge 1992 Toowoomba became the first Obedience Club in Queensland to have its own uniform and, in fact, was given pride of place at the RNA displays, including the Queen’s Royal Tour people’s night display. On July 20th 1969, Mr Les Stevens became the first Club member to be licensed as an Obedience Judge.
Toowoomba became the first Obedience Club in Queensland to have its own uniform and, in fact, was given pride of place at the RNA displays, including the Queen’s Royal Tour people’s night display. The Club has seen eight members take up Obedience and/or Agility, Tracking, Track and Search, and Dances With Dogs judging, of which two are active Judges today. A letter from the CCCQ was read out at the December 1969 meeting, approving the affiliation of the ‘Toowoomba Dog Obedience Club’, thus making it a Club in its own right and a separate entity from the Darling Downs Kennel Club.
The Club became incorporated in 1988 to meet the requirements for the construction of the new Clubhouse. After many years of working from a tent and a Kombi van, in 1982 the Club was given permission to lease a small section of the (then) horse paddock beside Norman Park to erect a garden shed for storage of equipment. This was in use until 1989 when the ground floor of the present day 'Bill Afflick Memorial' Clubhouse was built. The second floor was added in 1997 to provide the Club with the excellent facilities it has today. After using various locations around Toowoomba for training, the Club was advised in September, 1971 that Norman Park was available to them on Sunday mornings, although a lack of lighting obligated a return to night training at Holy Name in the heat of summer. In July, 1972 members were advised that it would cost the Club $2 per hour to hire the floodlit Holy Name oval for night training. This triggered the momentous decision to investigate the possibility of erecting a single power pole and light in Norman Park. This light came on in March, 1973 at a cost of $455.84. Training took place under this one light.

Club Interest The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 35 Another light was installed in 1984, then in March 1994 the ‘turning on’ of the four light poles on the western side of the Park took place. In 2000, the three steel light poles on the eastern side were brought into use at a cost of some $20,000. Now look at the inflationary cost increases! Training classes are now conducted at nights under these floodlights. Scent Hurdle Racing was first mentioned in March 1978, although the hurdles were made, the sport never got off the ground. The July Trial in 1988 gave the Club another ‘first’ with the first Agility Trial to be conducted in South East Queensland being held.
Carnival of Flowers Parade 1993
The Club went on to become the sponsors for the National Agility Challenge when it was first introduced and also the sponsors for the introduction of Dances With Dogs. For a small regional Club, the Toowoomba Dog Obedience Club has been instrumental in the development of many facets of this great world of dog sports that we enjoy today. Special mention should be made of Sue McIntyre and Margaret Connell who have each contributed over 40 years of service to the Club and remain very active members today. Since its inception, the Club has been involved in promoting responsible pet ownership in conjunction with the Australian Veterinary Association Pet People Education Programme. Displays of Obedience have been a regular feature, as have school visits, Carnival of Flowers marches and radio and TV segments.
Display Team 2000
Toowoomba Dog Obedience Club Inc. has received the heartiest congratulations from Queensland’s dog world on this special milestone in the Club’s history and best wishes that the Club and all its members enjoy great success in the future. Photo credits: Supplied by Trevor Telford 2015 Title Winners
