The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
President’s Message for October 2016 There has been a great deal of discussion on social media and around our events regarding Australia’s Associate Membership with the FCI. On the 24th of August 2016, the ANKC released communication in relation to this matter, which was posted on the Dogs Queensland website. The link for the press release is: http://www.dogsqueensland.org.au/MemberNewsItemDetail/?id=22328 Recently, the ANKC Ltd has been in negotiations with the FCI for the continuance as an Associate Member. Over the years, the FCI has allowed the ANKC Ltd to operate in a manner that in many cases was in breach of the FCI Statutes. The FCI have informed the ANKC Ltd that this is no longer tenable if Australia is to remain a member, and we will be expected to comply with the FCI Statutes for an Associate Member as per all the other FCI Associate Members. Based on prior meetings and correspondence, the ANKC Ltd would continue as an Associate Member of the FCI with the following understandings: 1. The ANKC Ltd will continue to pay the FCI the Annual Fee for Associate Membership (currently €400 or $604); 2. The ANKC Ltd, through its Member Bodies, will conduct a minimum of 2 CACIB shows per year (from 2018) and will pay to the FCI the nominated fee, €1.40 or $2.12 per catalogued dog; 3. CACIB shows are to be conducted under FCI regulations including group nomenclature and Breed Standards. There is a provision to combine some FCI groups to reduce the number of groups from 10 to 7; 4. All domestic shows (Championship, Open and Parade) will still be conducted in accordance with the current ANKC Ltd Regulations; It should be noted that many affiliates of State Bodies have already expressed a desire to conduct CACIB shows, to the extent it is likely that ANKC Ltd would have to limit the number of CACIB shows in each jurisdiction each year. This month, the ANKC Ltd Directors will be meeting with members of the FCI Executive. It is anticipated that the ANKC Ltd and the FCI will come to an agreement in principle regarding Australia’s continued membership.

The President’s Message The Queensland Dog World
Dog and Puppy of the Year As October rolls around again, our thoughts turn to the Dog and Puppy of the Year which this year sees a return to the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds. I am sure the Dog of the Year Committee will make this year’s event bigger and better than ever. This year sees a brand new format that we are particularly excited about. The Chair of that Committee, Tim Thomas, has given you a full rundown in his Chairman’s Message in this Edition of the Dog World but here is a brief explanation to whet the appetite: • • •
Pre-judging, for both Events, will be held on the evening of Friday 21 st October The top 2 dogs from each group (1-7) and the remaining top 18 dogs (from any group) based on the highest points scored, will then proceed through to the 'Top 32 Round' on Saturday evening Saturday evening, the 'Top 32 Puppies' and 'Top 32 Adults' will then compete in a knock out competition for the ultimate prize.
New All Breed Judges Lastly I would like to congratulate our newest All Breed judges. These candidates have worked tirelessly to achieve this accolade. Congratulations to: • • • • • • •

Policy – General Specials at Open Shows
Durack Fun Days
Dogs Queensland has adopted a new policy regarding 'General Specials at Open Shows'.
For 2017, Clubs using Durack for ‘Fundays’ or similar events will only be allowed to do so twice a year. The dates for 2017 will be Sunday 14th May and Sunday 19th November.
All Breeds Open Shows, held independently of All Breeds Championship Shows, should remain as is in regards to classes offered and General Specials.
Members Interested in Herding
For All Breeds Open Shows held in conjunction with All Breeds Championship Shows, the following applies. -
The submissions for the Herding Rule change for 2018 have been posted on the ANKC Website: http://ankc.org.au/AboutUs/?id=1283 The Herding Subcommittee will be conducting a meeting for all interested members to discuss the proposed rule changes at Durack at 10:00am on Sunday the 27th November 2016. The meeting is open to all interested members to discuss the best options for our delegate to vote for the rule changes at the National meeting in February 2017. Refreshments will be provided by Dogs Queensland. Please RSVP to the General Manager by 1st November 2016.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
a. Open Shows held in conjunction with Championship Shows commencing before 3pm must conduct General Specials. b. Open shows held in conjunction with Championship Shows commencing 3pm or later will not conduct General Specials. Clubs should also consider the following options. 1. Reduce the number of classes at the Open Show to four or five. Suggested Classes would be Baby Puppy (1, 1a), Puppy (3, 3a), Junior (4, 4a) Intermediate (5 5a) and Open (11, 11a). This would help save time, save money on trophies, but also ensure that Judges could potentially judge larger numbers of dogs in the classes.

Any proposal to use any of the above options should be submitted with the proposed schedule at the time of submission.
The following rules apply to both the Club Shield competitions listed below.
Judge Training 2016/17 Due to an insufficient number of applications, NO metropolitan breed lectures in Groups 1 and 2 will be presented in the 2016/17 Durack program. There was a mistake in the Group 7 Lecture Dates, the Peruvian Hairless appeared in those particular dates and should of course have only featured in the Group 4 dates. All Candidates are asked to note that the Practical Examination will take place on 26th August 2017.
Quarterly Members’ Forum The Dogs Queensland Board is pleased to announce the third of the Quarterly Members’ Forums for 2016. The event will take place on Saturday 22nd October at Durack from 2.00pm with light refreshments being provided. It is hoped that Members will come along in a more relaxed fashion to have a chat with Board Members more in the style of a casual ‘afternoon tea with Directors’.
Original Australian Dog Breeds Club Of Queensland The Original Australian Dog Breeds Club of Queensland is pleased to announce their first event to be held at the Dogs Queensland Sports Grounds at King Ave 247 on November 13th. All owners of the 5 Australian Breeds (Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Kelpie, Australian Silky Terrier; Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog and Australian Terrier) are very welcome to attend this inaugural Match Day for fun and adventure, where we can showcase the Original Australian Dog Breeds through friendship and camaraderie. All interested Members can meet at the Grounds at 9:00am to share a cuppa. After 'judging' takes place, it will be time for a sausage sizzle and more getting to know everyone over lunch. The Judge will be announced on the day and entry will be by a gold coin donation, nominations on the day. For further information – please contact Wayne Carter.

Dogs Queensland DOTY 2016 The Queensland Dog World
The pre-judging format will mean that each dog will be point scored (by 3 International Judges) based on different criteria (out of 100). The top 2 dogs from each group (1-7) and the remaining top 18 dogs (from any group) based on the highest points scored, will then proceed through to the 'Top 32 Round' on Saturday evening. This means that on Saturday evening, the 'Top 32 Puppies' and 'Top 32 Adults' will then compete in a knock out competition for the ultimate prize. The Judges will be swapped on Saturday evening so that whoever judged the Puppies on Friday, will then start by judging the Adults on Saturday. The Committee strongly believes that this new format should allow for a more efficient and interesting Saturday evening for all spectators. It will also showcase Queensland’s 'top' Puppies and Adults in the one night. And, finally, there will be better viewing as only 1 Ring will be required. The Committee has also listened to your concerns and decided to push back the Friday start time to 6:30pm for those of you who expressed concerns to us about being unable to make an earlier time. Phone registrations will be available.
Sponsors In 2016, the Dog of the Year Committee has been fortunate enough to gain a number of MAJOR SPONSORS. This year, our Major Sponsors include: • • • • • • • • • • • •
CCrates; Dogzonline, Show Manager and Agenor Kennels; Jetpets; Lockyer Valley Sharpening; Marellen Show Ribbons; Pet Portraiture; Puddleby Art; Queensland Veterinary Specialists; Royal Canin; Ffiona Erskine – Ffire Photography; Royal on the Park Hotel, Brisbane; Lead on Animal Leads
I will be promoting these wonderfully generous organisations throughout the coming months and at all of our events throughout 2016 and 2017.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
I therefore strongly encourage anyone from within our dog world fraternity, who can give our Sponsors patronage, to do so. Without them, it would be very difficult to run an event of this calibre. Their support is so greatly appreciated!
Dinner and Catering for Dog of the Year Similar to last year, the evening will again commence with champagne on arrival (see above times). After the success of last year’s dinner, the smorgasbord this year will again be catered for by professional chefs from 'Spits and Pieces' on the Gold Coast. It will consist of a range of meats, veggies and desserts. The menu options provided for by our caterers will be printed for your reference in this month’s Dog World magazine. All those planning on attending the dinner will also have access to a ring side seat included in your meal ticket. The dinner is encouraged for both entrants and spectators. The cost for the dinner/ringside seating is: • • •
$50.00 for Adults; $25.00 for Children between 5 – 14 years; and Free for Children under 5 years
Finally, the Committee asks that when booking your dinner tickets to please ensure that you specify whether you are part of a 'Club Table', whether there is anyone you wish to be seated next to or how many persons are to be seated at your table. If you are not part of a specific group, you will be assigned to a table, at random. All dinner bookings are to be made through either Mrs Jodie Wilshier (email: cavlamour@bigpond.com), or the Dogs Queensland Office, with payments to be sent to the Office.
Dress and Attire It has been so pleasing the last few years to see all of the spectacular outfits (dresses, evening gowns, dinner suits etc) that have been worn by those in attendance. I would like to thank everyone for really getting into the spirit of the occasion. Similarly, in 2016, the dress standard for the Saturday evening 'Top 32' Competitions is again Formal wear (black tie) with Semiformal attire (business suit) also being acceptable.
October 2016 - 13
Dogs Queensland DOTY 2016 The Queensland Dog World
Continued from page 13 Male patrons, exhibitors and onlookers are expected to wear at the minimum a suit or sports-jacket with tie. Bow tie is preferred. Female patrons are expected to wear a suitable evening dress and/or show suit or cocktail dress.
For the first time, we are holding a Saturday morning All Breeds Show. The Committee hopes that this will provide yet another incentive for our Northern qualifiers who are debating whether or not to travel down to Brisbane for the weekend. The schedules can be found in the Queensland Dog World.
The dress standard for the 2016 Friday night 'prejudging' is semiformal attire from our Competitors: male exhibitors wearing a suit or sports-jacket with tie and female exhibitors wearing suitable evening attire and/or show suit.
Please note, that as a courtesy to other Exhibitors, the WINNER and RUNNER UP at both the Puppy of the Year and Dog of the Year Finals will be asked not to compete at the Sunday All Breeds Show.
All qualifying photos with Ffiona Erskine will be taken on Friday night, so please, look good!
I hope this covers any questions or concerns that people may have at this stage. Remember that this event can only continue with your ongoing support!
Ring Setup For the Friday night 'prejudging' rounds, there will be 2 rings operating side by side on the Durack Show Grounds. The specific ring numbers will be emailed out to all entrants closer to the date. For the Saturday evening 'Top 32' Competitions, there will only be 1 ring in use (as opposed to 2 rings in previous years).
Please get behind us and make 2016 a year to remember! Yours Sincerely, Timothy Thomas Chairperson: Dog of the Year
We hope that this will mean better viewing for all those spectators who have chosen to purchase a seat ring side. Once again, tables will be set up around the rings for those who have purchased dinner and ring side seating. Dinner/ring side seating bookings are strongly encouraged. However, there will also be a smaller area allocated for persons who do not wish to purchase ring side seating (your own chairs will be required for this area). A more detailed ring plan for the Saturday evening will also be emailed out to all Dogs Queensland members in the coming weeks.
Judges The Judges this year are from Puerto Rico, Bulgaria, Portugal, the Philippines and China. Two of our Judges have never before been to Australia.
Saturday and Sunday All Breeds Shows ALL DOGS are eligible to compete at both of these Shows – regardless of whether or not they qualified for the Friday or Saturday night events. In other words, the two All Breeds Shows are regular, All Breeds Championship Shows.

PRESS RELEASE The ANKC Ltd Board resolved at the May 2016 Board meeting for the following motion passed at the October 2015 Board meeting as well as a subsequent electronic motion be rescinded prior to the endorsement of a recommendation received from the National Breed Standards Coordination Group.
The onus is to be placed on Judges to non-award undesirable/ highly undesirable colours. Prior to 1st January 2017, National Breed Councils or Breed Clubs will be invited so that they can nominate certain colours for their specific breeds not to be placed on the Main Register for health reasons and to provide evidence for their request.” All Breed Clubs, or breeders who have breeds which do not have a National Breed Council or a Breed Club, are requested to forward to their Member Body office a listing of what colours for their specific breed are not to be placed on the Main Register for health reasons and to provide evidence for this request by no later than COB Friday, 11th November 2016.
It was unanimously RESOLVED that the following two motions be rescinded: 1. Motion 7.2.1 Board Meeting October 2015: It was resolved that in reference to colour, a note be included on any breed standard stating that ‘highly undesirable’ is to be interpreted as not acceptable for inclusion on the Main Register. It was agreed this motion should only address the colour section of standards initially and any further references to ‘highly undesirable’ in other sections of the standards could be dealt with by electronic motion. and 2. Electronic Motion It was resolved that ANKC Ltd determine that 1st January 2017 be the implementation date for the following resolution passed at the October 2015 Board meeting and that prior to that date the Breed Standards Co-ordination Group report to the Board on the implications of implementing this decision. Rally-O Sub-Committee Tight Lead Penalties A number of people in the Novice rings seem to be getting fairly heavily penalised for tight leads. I’ve also heard a comment to the effect that “once I am out of Novice, there is no lead so I won’t get that deduction any more”. Well... you may not get penalised for a tight lead but you will probably get a different penalty because the underlying problem will still be there. If your dog is surging or lagging enough to give you a Tight Lead deduction, it will still probably be surging or lagging without the lead. Similarly, out of position, sniffing the ground, getting distracted by something outside the ring... will all incur a penalty whether the lead is on or off. At least some of the time, the reason is that the dog doesn’t understand what’s coming up. Particularly with weaves and spirals, because there are multiple changes of direction we can catch the dog unawares unless we give them some command or signal as to what’s going on. Go back to using the basic footwork to indicate that a turn is coming up. Use smaller steps when going around cones to the right (eg spirals and weaves and figure 8) like we do in an Obedience figure 8 to help the dogs keep pace with us. For left turns (e.g. again the spiral and weaves as well as all the left turns/ pivots/circles...) use your Rear End Awareness training to keep them in position. In Rally O we can talk to the dogs, so tell them what’s happening. Where there are multiple short pieces with lots of sits (e.g. 1-2-3 Steps Forward), particularly in that first step/halt, tell the dog to sit because they won’t be expecting to sit after just one step. Work on your heel positioning and focus exercises from the beginning. Even if you don’t want to go onto traditional Obedience, they will be a big benefit in the higher classes where you need to protect every point you can to qualify.

Reducing & Recognising STRESS IN DOGS
tress and Stress situations are not restricted to any one particular Breed. It is one of the most debilitating diseases a dog has to handle.
26 - October 2016
The problem of Stress can be linked to many training and behavioural methods. It can be linked to man’s misunderstanding of what makes his or her dog tick. It is something that almost every dog will suffer from at some stage of its life, and will certainly be at different levels. Some with very small stress situations, and others, unfortunately will live with stress possibly forever.
Supplied by Val Bonney
The Positive Method of training, can in many ways reduce the level of stress for the dog, but often even the most positive method can produce stress levels. Fear, anxiety and confusion are the instigators of stress, and these can occur even with the best of intentions. Of course physical problems can also create Stress. Ageing, poor diet, illness, heat waves, very cold spells can all add stress at a physical level.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
Mental Stress can cause physical traits. These can usually be diagnosed fairly easily. Loss of appetite, diarrhea, loss of energy, a temperature, fits of depression. 'My dog is just not itself' is a common comment from the owner.
Some Signs of Stress of a Mental Based Stressed Situation: To identify Stress in our dogs, we need to look at the whole dog. 1
Are his ears back
2
Are his pupils dilated
3
Is its tail down and under
4
Is its body lowered (as though it is cowering)
5
Is it sweating through its paws
6
Is it panting rapidly with the corner of the mouth back
7
Does it tremble when you take it out for a training session
8
Is its body hard
9
Is it shedding hair or dandruff
10
Is it vocalising by whining, or repetitious barking
11
Scratching
12
Yawning
13
Comic Relief
14
Shaking as though wet
15
Avoiding eye contact
The above are some of the things that denote Stress in our dogs. You may know of others.
Vocalisation: This barking, whining, can be caused by different stress situations. The owner has gone and left the dog alone. The dog finds by barking it releases the endorphin in the brain which gives the dog a sense of calm. It can be the dog's way of covering up an unpleasant situation. People who have to work through the day, often have a barking dog, which then becomes the neighbourhood menace. These owners then have to look for alternate ways to reduce the stress in their dog which has been created by being left alone. They have to provide their pooch with an alternative, and a feeling of security.

Continued from page 27
Panting: If the weather is cool (not hot) and you see a lot of panting from the dog, and a lot of drooling, this can be Stress related. Remember though, panting is natural for the dog which has just been exercised, or excited in some way. Even after light training the dog may naturally pant. This should be not excessive however, and should not cause DROOLING.
Sweaty Paws: If it is not raining out, and your dog has not just put his feet in a bucket of water to cool off, you see wet foot prints across your floor, remember this can be a sign of stress in your dog.
Hard Body: If you put your hands on your dog and it feels very hard, or you watch your dog move across an area, and it appears very tense, if the jaws appear clenched, these can all be signs of stress in the dog.
Shedding Hair Or Dandruff: These occur when the body is tense from stress. Of course dogs shed hair at other times. Winter to summer. Hair comes off. An extremely hot bout of weather, can often make a dog shed. This is normal. The stressed dog sheds hair at times when it is not normal for the dog to shed coat.
Dilation Of The Eyes: Is a dead give away of stress. If the light is normal, but you see your dog with obviously dilated eyes, you can be pretty sure something is stressing him /her. The natural instincts of the dog are Fight, Flight, Bite and Hunt. Some dogs will show they are stressed by freezing in one spot. It can be fear which has caused the stress. Fighting can be caused by Stress. Unsocialised dogs find it very hard to communicate in an appropriate manner when confronted by other dogs. They stress. Then fight. Flight. How many times has your dog run away from you, or from a stressful situation. Biting. Dogs will bite when frightened or stressed.
28 - October 2016
There is no such thing as a dog which will not bite given the provocation of stress.or indeed any other reason which promotes provocation. Look to yourself as the owner on every occasion your dog show signs of stress, and work out what is causing the stress to build in your dog.
Scratching: The dog on a sit or down stay which scratches. Do you automatically think it has fleas? No, most times it is stress related. The dog needs to have confidence in you, the owner, that you are going to return to it, and that there is nothing for it to be concerned about.
Yawning: Like sniffing, the dog will yawn. It’s not tired. It is stressed. Of course dogs yawn and scratch when they are bored or tired or just plain itchy. You must understand and read the difference.
Shaking Off: Not after a swim or something of like ilk. Relief can be achieved by the dog from a stress situation by shaking. Calm them down by stroking backwards. A long firm stroke is required here. Go the full length of the dog's body several times. This disturbing of the coat will cause the dog to give a good shake, but the actual stroking has calmed the dog down.
What can we do to
remove stress?
Calming Signals: Calming Signals are a wonderful way to alleviate the stress in the dog. There is a small book written by a Norwegian called the Work of Turid Rugaas CALMING SIGNALS. Try to get a copy of this book, it is excellent. She tells of several ways you can recognise and give calming signals to the dog.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
Member Insight The Queensland Dog World
Some signs of calming you will see in dogs are:- Turning the head away from another dog which wants to confront it. You can do this to your dog when you want to diffuse a situation as well.
Moving in an arc: Normally when dogs approach each other they very rarely approach nose to nose. They will move in an arc or curved line, and walk past the nose to sniff rear ends while standing side to side. This is very common particularly in the Border Collie or any of the working breeds.
Moving Slowly: If a dog wants to give signals to another dog when it sees it, if normally starts to move slower. This slow movement is a calming signal on its own. I don’t want to worry you or cause you concern, I am no threat to you.” We can use this signal for calming often. Approach a dog you don’t know or you are concerned about in a slow walk, but positively. Don’t slink along as though you are afraid. This movement could have the opposite effect to the one desired.
Watch, when a young dog or an inexperienced dog bounds up to another dog, possibly wanting to play, but not giving the calming signals first, there can be a problem. The dog which is being approached in this boisterous manner can see this as a threat, and treat the situation accordingly. We can now have a brawl on our hands. All because the calming signal wasn’t given first.
Free running areas: Ever wondered why there are very few altercations in a leash free area where the dogs are running about? This is because of several reasons, but mostly because the dog is stress free. It does not have an owner standing over it, lead in hand all the time. It is now free to give to those other dogs, the body language required to diffuse most situations. Of course there are always exceptions to every rule, and you may come across a dog that is a natural bully, and lets fly at anything that is there. Normally, however the dogs will run freely together. Sit and watch their body language, it can be fascinating. They play, bow, jump on each other without aggression and just naturally run and play. It is very good for the dogs to be able to interact with one another, without human intervention.

Continued from page 29 It is great socialising, especially for the dog which is heavily into Obedience work. It relieves many different forms of stress in a natural way. You will possibly have more dramas from the humans within this leash free area. They can often be difficult to handle, particularly if they feel their dog can never do anything wrong.
Averting eyes or blinking: Any experienced handler will tell you that it is easier to gain a dog's confidence, especially when it is worried, by avoiding direct eye contact. An even better method is to turn the head or even the body away from the dog. You can even go as far as turning the side or back to the dog. Slitting of eyes is common when one dog confronts another. This can also be a calming signal. Don’t make a mistake and misread it.
TO IDENTIFY STRESS IN OUR DOGS, WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE WHOLE DOG.
They may be poking sticks or hands over the fence, causing your dog to stress. You can’t remove the children, so you have to move your dog away. Bring him in when the children are outside. Dog will be happy, it’s now inside with you. If you are outside working in your garden, put the dog on a lead and stake him out next to you. He’ll be happy to be next to your side while you work anyhow.
The dog who barks as soon as you leave for work: Sometimes just changing your pattern of leaving will stop the stress from developing. Change when you pick up your car keys, leave by the back door instead of the front, stop saying goodbye to the dog, anything that you have formed a pattern of leaving may need to be changed. We are creatures of pattern, so we may need to look hard at just how we do leave. Think about it, you will possibly solve your own problems if you start to think DOG. Lots and lots of things that happen daily in our own lives, as well as the lives of our dog are Stress related. Sometimes, it is easy to call things that happen Stressful. It is a term, I believe, that often is very loosely used. If we remain calm, confident and above all quiet in the manner in which we deal with things, then our Stress will be less, and it's amazing, but so will the dog's level of stress drop. When we yell all our commands to our dogs, dogs like people can develop selective hearing. Remember, a dog's hearing is so much better than ours, but we continually speak or yell loudly in the presence of our dogs.
Lip Licking:
THEY DON’T NEED US TO DO THIS.
When the dog is stressed it will often give a quick little flick with the tongue. We often miss this little sign, but it is the dog's way of saying calm down to everybody.
A quiet word will get us a much better response from the dog, will lower not only our blood pressure, but everyone else around us also.
Removing the cause of the dog's stress is of course the answer. Sounds easy. It is if we know why the dog is stressed. We really have to have a wonderful relationship with our pet, and have bonded with it and understand it totally, before we find relieving stress easy.
There is so much that can be written on this subject, but I hope this small amount may give someone out there a little hope and understanding when dealing with Stress related dog issues. To view online material related to this article visit: Val Bonney (Canine Behavioural Specialist/International Trainer).
It's not an easy thing to do. However, often Stress can be alleviated by removing the cause of the stress. For example:- The dog who barks every time the children next door come out into their yard. Ever watched those children?

Humidicribs. We all know that no maternity ward would be without them. We also know that that they have been on the wishlist of dog breeders for years, but have been prohibitively expensive. Finally, all that's changed. iPaws All For Paws has released an affordable Humidicrib onto the Australian market. We talked to Peter Irby from iPaws, who is amazed at the response from Vets and Breeders alike. Peter tells how the first unit arrived and a Vet asked if he could utilise it for a caesarian the following day to try it out. He was so impressed he sent the puppies home in it, the breeder bought it and he had to buy another! Our feedback is amazing, and not just for sick puppies. Healthy puppies thrive in these units. We have testimonials galore from breeders who describe them as an absolute must. Heat blankets and hot water bottles were fine last century, but in 2016 there's no excuse for not having this life determining equipment on hand.
www.dogsqueensland.org.au
The uptake has been so good we've been able to make them even cheaper with prices starting from just $799 plus GST.
Our feedback is amazing, and not just for sick puppies. Healthy puppies thrive in these units. We even have finance available so you can have a unit when your dog whelps, without worrying about finding even more money before those puppies arrive! Zone 2 Showcase The Queensland Dog World
Zone 2 Dog World Column, October 2016 t is hard to believe it but we are almost at the end of the year with only a few months before we are enjoying Christmas celebrations and taking a short break to recharge the batteries before a new year in 2017. There are some terrific events coming up in October for members to enjoy.
Dog of the Year / Puppy of the Year Competitions The annual Dog of the Year / Puppy of the Year competitions continue to grow and develop as a major event for our members. The event this year has a few changes from last year including the main one being the change of venue back to our Durack grounds. The Committee has been working extremely hard to prepare a fantastic event for our members and I’m sure that they won’t let us down. Another major change is the introduction of pre-judging on Friday, 21st October down to the final 32 in each competition, with the judging through to winners being conducted on Saturday, 22nd October. This is a change which does impact on regional exhibitors a little more as extra days potentially may have to be taken off to provide time for travel to Brisbane for the event. With over 200 exhibits eligible to compete in each competition, it is promising to be a massive event. Good luck to everyone participating, safe travels and it will be lovely to see the trophy coming to Zone 2.
Callide Classic Competition Since a previous decision by the Board to abandon the regional DOTY / POTY qualifying events, the Callide Valley Canine Club applied for and has successfully run a similar event for members in Zone 2 since 2013. This year on 15th October, the Club will again run the Callide Classic. This will be a sad and happy occasion as it will be the last Callide Classic competition, as the Board has approved zone events for both Zone 2 and Zone 3 from 2017. The Club has enjoyed providing this competition for members enjoyment but will be slightly relieved as it has always done so at a significant financial cost to the Club. I would like to thank the Callide Valley Club for their willingness to do this for members, especially Sue and Jim Cook who added the work for this to their already very busy schedule. The 2016 Callide Classic promises to once again be a fun and enjoyable evening for members in the Zone 2 area.
Did you know? Exhibitors are not permitted to move their crates, trolleys and dogs into the assembly area while the group prior to them is being judged. It is very important for exhibitors to obey and adhere to this rule. There is generally a break between the conclusion of a group and the beginning of the next group to allow a changeover. Some may find it surprising to learn that if there is a big crush of exhibitors waiting to get into the assembly area or moving in before the completion of the preceding group, this creates a bottleneck and prevents the exhibitors finishing to easily leave the area, which in turn provides the space for the next group’s exhibitors to move in. As a matter of common sense and courtesy, please allow the exhibitors finishing in a ring to move out of the assembly area before you move in – it will ensure a much smoother transition for everyone involved. If you have moved into the assembly area with your dogs prior to the end of the preceding group, please do not be offended when the Steward or a Show or Club official asks you to move back out.

Show Workers We have all heard this before, but it is always relevant. We really need more Show Workers and volunteers to do the jobs that make Shows possible for our members. There is an accreditation and training process available for all roles so that you are prepared to do the jobs (which are really easy, by the way...). The assessments and training are not in place to imply that anyone who is not accredited does not know how to do the job. It is well-recognised that many members have been doing these jobs for years and do them very well. The assessment and training is more for insurance purposes and the fact that we have this in place can and has been relevant to claims against Dogs Queensland. If you would like to learn about these roles, please contact me at craig.pettett1@bigpond.com and I will keep a list of interested members to try and organise training dates. As an exhibitor, the training is extremely valuable as many of the rules are covered in this training and assist exhibitors to understand what their rights and obligations are.
Submissions Submissions for the column of news or photos are always welcome. Please feel free to send to me at: craig.pettett1@bigpond.com Until next time.

The event was advertised as a chance to come along and have some fun with Agility and an Agility dog at Novice Level and along they came – Paige, Emily, Charlie, Kiara, Ruby, Holly and Rhys. Congratulations on being our first competitors and what a fantastic job that you all did. The entrants walked the course, had a Judges briefing and then ran a course, some Novice, Excellent and Masters dogs followed the Junior Handlers around the course with the encouragement of our Judge, Rachel Bulloch, and a large crowd cheering and clapping them at the end.
this is our future, let’s get together and help it grow
Kiara
Tina from Pawsnap has provided some photos of the runs. Our goal is for the kids to be able to run a dog, have fun and learn the sport so that they can continue the sport. After the event, Paige went along and assisted the lead Steward with the confidence she had gained from her run. Our Juniors want to help, so let’s find a way to support and encourage them.
Ruby
Before and after the competition, we have had enquiries from other Clubs wanting to run a Junior Handlers Competition which is fantastic. We would love to encourage other states to follow our lead and introduce and support Junior Handlers with similar competitions. This is our future, let’s get together and help it grow. If anyone has queries or questions I am only too happy to help, as I am sure are Dogs Queensland and the Queensland Agility Committee.

Australian Performance Papillons By Denise Chrystal Papillons have been competing in performance sports since at least the 1960s. At that time, there was only a few ANKC disciplines available such as Obedience and Tracking compared to the vast variety available today which also include Agility, Jumping, Agility Games (Snooker, Gamblers and Strategic Pairs), Track and Search, Rally-O, Dancing with Dogs (Freestyle and Heelwork to music) to name a few. Other organisations offer flyball and NADAC all of which many Papillons seem to excel in. There are now Papillons competing in these events in most Australian States and Territories, some of whom have been acknowledged in other articles. Some early ANKC Titles I have discovered are:

Feature Breed The Queensland Dog World
Working Papillons By Coral Pethers
The Papillon is considered an intelligent, outgoing and friendly breed and, of course, great to cuddle. These dogs are capable of great actions and enjoy doing more in life than just being a beautiful lap dog.
Let me introduce three local Papillons who are the proof of these talents. Firstl is Sailoz Moonraker ADM ADO JDX SD GD. ‘Barney’ (handled by Lee Bryce) commenced his career in Agility in 2015 at the age of 2 years and, as you can see by the Titles after his name, has done extremely well – some 8 Titles to date. In 2015, Barney was 4th out of the top 10 dogs in Queensland in Agility and now, in 2016, Barney is heading towards his Agility Champion Title. Next is T CH Chyaree Midget TSD (handled by Paulette Watson). ‘Pazzaz’ is a Tracking Champion and a Track and Search dog and only one pass away from her Track and Search dog Excellent Title – soon to be 5th Title.
42 - October 2016
Pazzaz is just 5 years old. It is hard to imagine such a little ball of fluff coming to find a lost person through the bush and now in urban environments as well, but once Pazzaz has her tracking harness on she is all business and pushes her way through (or around) all obstacles until she has found the person at the end of the track. At times, the rubbish attached to her coat by the end of a track has weighed nearly as much as she does! Lastly is CH (N) Waiwilta Wysdom RM RAE CD FS.N HTM.N – known to all as ‘Amber’ and handled by Coral Pethers. To date, Amber has competed in 5 different disciplines and achieved Titles in all 5 – a total of 11 Titles. Amber has just turned 4 and absolutely loves to work.

Her enjoyment when working is so high it is sometimes difficult to keep her feet on the ground with all the excited bouncing that she does. So, for anyone out there looking for a smaller breed dog as a part of their family, they cannot go far wrong in considering a Papillon. Just remember though, these dogs enjoy being active and using their brains just as much as they enjoy being loved and cuddled. Photo credits: Supplied by Coral Pethers

New All Breeds Judge’s Résumés 2016 Queensland Dog World
Rosemary Green transitioned from the world of horses to the world of purebred dogs in 1974 with the purchase of a young Rhodesian Ridgeback female. My mother purchased a Pharaoh Hound at the same time and she and I ventured into the dog show scene together. Her mother, my grandmother, was one of the very first people to train dogs (Alsatians) for rescue work in the UK during the World War II bombings and her diary makes for fascinating reading. The love of animals runs in our family for generations but even so, if someone had said to me in 1974 that I would become an All Breeds Judge and travel the world judging dogs, I would have laughed at them. Now it has become reality and I am both humbled and very grateful to the multitude of people who have helped and supported me during my training from Rhodesian Ridgeback Judge in 1999 to All Breeds Judge in 2016. It has been an amazing journey and I have learned so much about structure, temperament and breed characteristics from the Chihuahua to the Great Dane and everything in between! I am very lucky to have the unwavering support of my daughter since I started my judging career. I would like to sincerely thank the co-ordinators of each group, the breeders/owners who bring their dogs to lectures and those who have allowed me to go over their dogs at Shows or at their homes and who have been prepared to discuss openly the strengths and weaknesses of their dogs, the assessors who have a tough job to do and the workers and organisers who make the judges’ training scheme happen.
Amanda Everson have been involved in the dog world since 1984 after getting my first Pyrenean Mountain Dog. I have remained with Pyreneans ever since breeding many Champions, with many successes in the Show Ring. I have a great passion for all breeds in all groups as I love the history behind each and every breed of dog. I would like to pay tribute to my late husband, Les Everson, who strongly encouraged me to start on this long journey to become an all breeds Judge. My son Garrett has given me a lot of strength in the past few years. I would also like to thank numerous Judges who have mentioned me, and friends who encouraged me to continue on this journey. I am greatful to all the dog exhibitors who have entered under me and encouraging me to continue to strive to get to my all breeds license when times have been difficult for me. I will continue to strive to maintain a high level in my fututre judging career.

New All Breeds Judge’s Résumés 2016 The Queensland Dog World
Dr Vicki Knopke have owned and bred pure breed dogs since 1980. My first Show dog was an Afghan Hound and my husband owned Beagles. We bred Beagles in the 1990’s – 2000’s. In the late 80's we were smitten with Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs and we were part of the re-breeding program for Australia. From 5 breeding pairs left we now have a reasonable gene pool. I owned Glengary Red Dog, the first Queensland dog to achieve his Title through the new register in the late 1980’s. I now see dogs from these lines being successfully shown in the southern States as well as Queensland. I have been part of the Queensland Judges training scheme since 1984 and I was a trainer in the Working dog group prior to moving to Longreach (Central West Queensland), with my work in 2006. I am an accredited Steward and Show Manager and was a member of the Dogs Queensland Board in 2012. I continue to be a Brisbane Royal Steward, receiving my long service award in 2016. My judging training began with Hounds with our Beagles and Afghan interests then onto Terriers. My mother had Scottish Terriers which were shown at times. Working dogs followed with our love of the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs. At specialty I have judged the Spaniel Club of Qld, Poodle Club, Hound Club, Working Dogs, Chihuahua, Samoyed and the first Australian Shepherd National Show, Spitz Clubs in Australia and New Zealand and a variety of other Shows. In 2015 I completed my PhD (Education) and have turned my attention back to training and completed my all breeds in 2016.
Jodie Wilshier have been a member of Dogs Queensland for 24 years. I started Showing and breeding Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with my mother, then 15 years ago my husband joined us on the prefix Cavlamour. However, my introduction to the dog world started way before then when my mum showed and bred Labradors in Sydney for a short time in the 1970’s. I entered the showring at this time as a Junior Handler, often seen handling either one of our Labradors or my aunt’s Dobermann.
Image coming
I have been a member of the Kennel Association of Queensland for over 20 years and currently hold the position of Secretary. I have also been a member of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club of Queensland since its inception more than 15 years ago, and currently serve as its President. I commenced judges training in 2001 and have been an active member in the training scheme ever since. I hope to continue working in the scheme and helping candidates. I have judged in most States of Australia, as well as New Zealand and last year was fortunate enough to secure an appointment in Cyprus. I thoroughly enjoy judging dogs and feel privileged to have obtained the status of 'all breeds'. It is something I have worked very hard for and am looking forward to continuing on the learning journey as I venture out as an All Breeds Judge.

New All Breeds Judge’s Résumés 2016 Queensland Dog World
Kim Haddon y love of dogs goes back to early childhood, with my family owning a purebred Miniature Smooth Daschund, German Shepherd, Australian Cattle Dog and three Toy Poodles. My mother also bred Purebred Arabian Horses. My personal involvement with purebred dogs spans the past 43 years, having joined the ANKC/Canine Control Council Queensland (t/as Dogs Queensland) in 1973, when I was involved in Obedience Trialing and Obedience displays at the Brisbane Royal. In 1975, I bred my first purebred litter of German Shepherds under my mother’s Prefix 'Millavale' and from this litter came one of Australia’s Top German Shepherds at the time. I continued to breed, Show and Trial German Shepherds for the next 15 years under my own Zeigen Prefix. During this time I also bred, exhibited and Trialed Rottweilers for 11 years with success both in the Obedience ring and Show/Conformation ring. In 1984, I became one of two founders for the Bernese Mountain Dog in Australia and I have continued to breed and Exhibit Bernese Mountain dogs for the past 33 years, importing and exporting to many Countries throughout the World. As the founder and President of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Queensland for the past 17 years, I was invited and attended the World’s first Bernese Mountain Dog Health Symposium held in Langenthal, Switzerland in 2000, discussing breeding and health issues affecting the Bernese Mountain Dog. I pride myself on the strict standards of soundness to which I breed and was named as breeding #1 and #2 Top Soundness Producing BMD Sires in Australasia, in a book written by English author and statistition, Malcolm Willis (UK). In 2006, I became involved with Importing, Showing and breeding Pomeranians and have imported Pomeranians from five different Countries to help improve the breed. My ambitions were quickly realised by breeding the #4 Pomeranian in America in 2014 and invited to compete at Westminster in 2015. I have also bred and shown Jack Russell Terriers. Zeigen Kennels, have bred well over 70 Champions in my chosen breeds. I started judging in 1997 and have judged extensively throughout Australia and New Zealand and more recently Finland. I am currently President of The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Queensland, a position I have held for 16 years, I am on the Committee of the Darling Downs Kennel Club, where I have held the position of Treasurer and I am on the Inaugural National Drafting Committee. I have had the honor of judging Specialty Shows for Australian Cattle Dogs and Kelpies, Australian Terriers and Tenterfield Terriers, Bernese Mt Dogs, Border Collies, Borzois, Boxers, Brittish Bulldogs, Bull Mastiffs, Cocker Spaniels, Collies-Rough and Smooth, Fox Terriers, Jack Russell Terriers, Old English Sheepdogs, Rottweilers, Saint Bernards, West Highland White Terriers, Utility Dog Club of NSW, Tasmania and Victoria Specialties and the Toy Dog Club Specialty of New Zealand and in 2015, I judged at Lahti International Dog Show in Finland. “Many thanks to all the Group coordinators, the assessors, the breeders, who have brought dogs to lectures and hands on exams, to all those behind the Judges Training scheme and all those exhibitors who have encouraged and supported me... and finally a huge thank you to my fabulous supportive husband Wayne and my children Katrin and Scott. Becoming All Breeds is a lifelong dream fulfilled and I am very proud to finally be able to call myself an All Breeds Judge and will continue to honor this title by always giving my honest opinion."

New All Breeds Judge’s Résumés 2016 The Queensland Dog World
Ulla Greenwood ecoming an all breeds judge has been a very special milestone for me. My involvement with the dog world has been a long but deeply enjoyable experience. Really it started when I was 11 years old and newly arrived in Brisbane with my German father who gave me the choice of any breed of dog. As I really wanted a horse, I nominated a Great Dane but was given my second choice, an Afghan Hound. This was Ch Hanrovia Kusan Columbia 'Tullo' bred by Dr Joan Lawrence and ultimately owned and campaigned by Mrs Jean Duncan when we moved into a unit. There was no Limited Register in those days and although Tullo was bought as a pet, it gave me the opportunity to enter him in a dog Show and that was the Rocklea Agricultural Show. My father managed the old Kingsley Private Hotel in George Street next to the Queensland Club and Tullo entertained guests and passers by from his vantage point on the front veranda. After getting married in 1981, Andrew and I had 4 more Hanrovia Afghan Hounds and showed from time to time. It was in the late 80s that I watched the Whippet judging at the Ekka and as they say, the rest is history. And it was attending my first US Whippet National in Pittsburgh in 2000 and sitting with the International Judges contingent for that week that piqued my interest in becoming a dog Judge. So that journey started then and has been most rewarding. The training and whole judging experience has allowed me to meet many wonderful people in the dog world and has deepened my understanding and appreciation of our many wonderful dog breeds. So many people have been generous with their time and have quite happily given their insights about their breeds. And for that I thank them and look forward to continuing that learning process. I would also like to thank those on the Judges Conformation Committee from time to time over the last 15 years as well as the training co-ordinators for the 7 groups. And finally, heartfelt thanks to my husband, Andrew, and of course, to the incomparable Harold, for their special support and encouragement over the years.
Carol Gunn commenced my journey in the Judges Training Scheme in 1999. Over the years there have been many tears and tantrums. I would like to thank my mentors both living and those that have passed on. Coordinators, fellow trainers and of course the exhibitors. Finally a big thank you to my mother who comes from the generation that says 'when you start something, you finish it'. I hope I can continue to represent Dogs Queensland with honesty and a genuine enjoyment for Judging.
